John Regan TEESSIDE AUTHOR My name is John Regan. I am a born and bred Teessider, massively proud of my northern roots. My name is John Regan. I am a born and bred Teessider, massively proud of my northern roots. I combine working full-time as a telecom engineer at Openreach, with my writing. To date I have written four novels. A love of the English language and a passion for words led to me join a creative writing course in my late-forties. I had always wanted to write, but never genuinely believed I would complete one, never mind four books. Encouraged and enthused by other members of the class, and a belief that it is never too late to follow your passion, the genesis of my first novel began. Since then I have published four books, all in different genres, available in paperback and eBook. I have appeared on local radio to talk about my work, and have held several book signings in the region. This gives me an opportunity to meet and discuss my novels, and writing in general, with people, which is something I love to do. I would encourage anyone who feels they have a story to tell to go for it, and put pen to paper. I am proof that it really is never too late. My four published books are: The Hanging Tree, a gritty, adult thriller set locally in Teesside and North Yorkshire. Persistence of Vision, a psychological thriller, The Romanov relic, a comedy thriller, and my latest, The space between our tears, a story about all aspects of love. Although my first three novels cover adult themes, my fourth, The space between our tears, gave me the opportunity to write about love and all the emotions it encapsulates. It also gave me the chance to include some of my poetry, which is a real passion of mine. The poetry is tailored to fit in with the overall story and has themes such as loss, guilt and death. I have now started writing the sequel to my first novel, The hanging tree, due to the popularity of this book, and readers expressing an interest in a followup. This book will be titled: The fallen leaves, and will be available in 2019.

Deep red nail polish was a must, the 1930’s finishing touch was leaving a crescent moon shape bare at the base of the nail. Nails were finger tip length and were worn pointed or rounded, not square.

TRENDS

Nails were short and often left bare as 1940’s polish was in short supply. If polish was available it was worn in a subtle light pink shade or simple clear polish was worn to add shine.

THROUGH

Bright red nails paired with bright 1950’s red lipstick was the ultimate glamorous look. Nails were long and almond shaped. Long oval nails coated in sheer 1960’s shades like pastel pink and shimmery peach were made popular by stars like twiggy and Barbra Streisand.

After being in the fitness industry for 9 years, I made a huge jump two and a half years ago to take my career on a different path, leaving a local authority as a health coordinator/fitness instructor, I decided to go ‘solo’ with ‘Fitness classes with Claire’. This is when ‘Clubbercise Cleveland’ was born! Clubbercise is an exercise class in a darkened room with Glowsticks featuring 90’s Club anthems. Due to the low lighting it minimises any worries due to confidence and ability. We have great fun, laugh (usually at my expense), sweat and get fit at the same time. The atmosphere is awesome, it amazes me how shy, worried ladies grow, make lots of friends and end up joining me in my other classes - Zumba, Zumba Gold, HIIT, Bums & tums. I also run ‘Whipped into Shape’, a 10 week educational & weight loss program & a monthly community walking group.

Hello, my name is Angela and I started my hairdressing career in a private college in Middlesbrough in the early 80s. I went on to serve a full apprenticeship at the most highly regarded hair salon of its time, Jacob & Erik of Copenhagen. A few years later, I began my own mobile hairdressing business which I ran successfully for over ten years before I became a full time Mum. When our eldest daughter Alexandra was nine months old, my husband began a new career in the far East, and we moved there as a family. Our youngest daughter Amelia was born in Brunei and we enjoyed many happy years living there before returning to the UK.

We are involved in many charity fund raising events for local causes and each year we join the masses at Seaton’s Boxing Day Dip. This year 40+ members of my classes will be attending with me on behalf of the ‘Neoangels Charity’ and I’m so proud of my ‘Glow Queens’ for doing it with me. I’ve always enjoyed working with the Public, I have a very bubbly......some say loud personality but this certainly goes a long way to creating a fab environment for my classes.

We opened a small holiday cottage business in Whitby which kept me busy for a few years, but I always wanted to return to my previous profession. I went to Saks to complete a refresher course which involved being salon based. I am fortunate to have had a friend who owns one of Middlesbrough’s leading salons and he kindly allowed me to work there in order for me to complete the course.

I myself started exercising many years ago due to being massively over weight and understand it’s a big leap to attend a class at first but I want to make it enjoyable enough for people to carry on their journey. My two daughters 14 & 20yrs old help me along with my mum and great friends - we certainly are a formidable team.

I continue to work in the salon every Monday and still enjoy the salon environment which also enables me to keep up to date with the ever changing techniques within the industry.

The empty shop has been left empty for too long, it is fantastic to see the building being put to good use again. The former Teesside Hospice charity shop will become a upmarket beauty salon. Located between Diana Kaye florist and the Darlington Building society on the High Street, will be transformed into a salon. The building will have a variety of treatment and therapy rooms for luxury beauty and spa treatments. The change of use was permitted on September 25 after being submitted in early August. An officer’s report accompanying the decision said: “Physical works internally include the alteration to first floor room partitions to create new beauty therapy rooms and an enlarged toilet area through removal of existing partition walls and installation of new partitions.

The report adds: “This application is for the change of use of a former charity shop to a beauty salon and relates to the ground and first floors. The site lies in the Yarm Conservation area in the town centre and two full time employees will staff the salon. The salon, which was applied for by Lucy Knowles, will be open 9am to 8pm during the week and 9am to 6pm on Saturdays. An opening date has not yet been set.

What you need

Skagen is a traditional Scandinavian dish. A super quick spin on a prawn cocktail, serve on rye bread, sourdough or on crispbreads. Perfect for lunch or great as a starter to serve at your next dinner party.

JD TRAINING OPENING DOORS FOR A BIG BANG On Sunday 4th November, when thousands were looking up to the skies down by the riverside to view the spectacular fireworks display hosted by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, JD Training opened it’s doors to family, friends and JPC Community Farm to get the perfect view of the display from their offices on Silver Street. JD Training, an accredited training company offering training solutions in a wide range of courses, celebrated bonfire night with friends and family while also showing their support for newly established, local charity, JPC Community Farm. Annette Heath and Pam Wilkinson, with the support of their family and friends, opened their doors and pulled out all the stops - organising games and activities for the children as well as offering a delicious spread of home-baked food and sweet treats so that everyone could enjoy the sights of the firework display in comfort and with plenty of fun!

Lewis is now a five-time world champion after he secured the title at the Mexican Grand Prix. Lewis was at peak performance during his face off against Sebastian Vettel. Lewis is infamous for his motivation and determination.

“It’s definitely the best year I feel,” he said. “It was the goal when I won the championship last year. I asked how can I improve? How can I be fitter, more focused, manage my time better? How can I be a better all-round driver, not just in the car but with my team in the garage, with the engineers and in the factory. “I feel this year I have been able to lift them all up. I don’t know if that comes with age but I am sure experience helps and I feel like I have performed my best this year.” He said: "In my mind, it is another day of fighting and I still have more races to win. It is not over for me. "I have to go back and work with the engineers, debrief, get my mind right, start training again next week and get in gear so we can try to win [the next race] in Brazil.

On Friday the 2nd November, the wonderful Swift Family, along with Christopher Johnson of Wainstones Hotel, held a charity night in memory of Garbutt Johnson and in aid of JPC Community Farm. What a wonderful evening this was with delicious food and a warm atmosphere which began with talented young James Muir, age 11, playing his saxophone for us all. Paul and Julie Connaughton, founders of JPC Community Farm, were overwhelmed by the kindness and effort of the organisers, but also all the local businesses in Stokesley and surrounding areas along with friends and supporters who kindly donated raffle prizes and tombola prizes for the night. The Swift/Johnson family raised £806 in total on the night - this is a fabulous amount and will go a long way in support of JPC Community Farm. We would like to pass on Thanks from Julie, Paul and James Connaughton and all the JPC family.
