Actress Lilly Ross
Since I was about ten, it’s been my dream to become an actress I grew up in a supportive family and although my mam and dad have frequently had to prioritise my brother’s needs due to his condition being very demanding, I have never felt pushed out and am grateful to my parents for everything. My brother, Jacob, has only recently been officially diagnosed with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, enabling us to access support which we weren’t able to have before. I used to pester my mam and dad about joining an acting school and we would look at so many options but they just never felt right. I knew exactly what I was looking for. Then, my mam showed me an advert for The DJW School of Acting and, straight away, I was eager to join. We sent Daniel several emails with millions of questions, and he was very keen to have me at the school. After my first session, I was even more keen on becoming an actress. The pure fact that the school is NOT a drama club - it is an acting school, is what really sold it to me. Daniel regularly arranges for casting directors, producers and actors to come in and either look for an actor or share their skills and experiences with us. One of these sessions resulted in my first job. Qasim Baig was one of those producers and he cast me in a short film called ‘Delivering the Lines’. I spent a full week filming this 10-minute film and had the time of my life. I cannot thank Daniel and Qasim enough for the opportunity, for making my experience so amazing and setting my standards extremely high for future work! I will be working with Qasim again soon.
I will always remember the moment when I got a call off Daniel saying I have got the job. I was in TGI Fridays with my friends and he rang me and said “Lilly, can I ask you a question?” I said, “go on” and he said “how would you like to play the character of Kelsey in Waterbabies?” and I replied with “SHUT UP! Oh my god yes!”, he laughed and it went from there. Many actors inspire me but I feel like my trigger lies in emotionally connected actors especially, as that is how I prefer to work. By doing a sort of meditation, I can attract different energy types to help get into character. Emotionally becoming the character really excites and drives me. I also feel that it is important to make a connection with the director as it helps with character development. Daniel once asked me the question ‘Do you want FAME or a serious acting career?’. I replied, ‘Obviously, the answer is a serious acting career.’ Yes, to be completely honest, I would love to be recognised for my work but I do not expect anything that reaches the levels of fame - that would just be a bonus! I would be happy with making enough money to be able to have a nice life, meet all kinds of people and spend my time working hard at something that I have a deep passion for. Just remember that sometimes when you feel that family issues or just general family life is taking over your mind, you must never lose dedication to you dreams.
I was later invited to audition for a professional short film called ‘Waterbabies’ and then to a re-call.

Qasim Baig About Me: Since a young age, I’ve always been into film production and regularly made amateur movies. I followed my dream to Teesside University; graduating in 2016 with First Class Honours in Television & Film Production which is where my career began.
The DJW School of Acting The DJW School of Acting was born in August 2015 by Daniel John Williams. Starting off as a home-based business, he and his partner Emma Louise Teasdale now run the DJW School of Acting and The DJW Talent Agency from their office in Acklam Hall.
I won producer of the year for 2016 at the screening of our films and went on to work in the industry in all manner of roles, including working on feature films. I produced my first postUniversity short film which was crowd-funded and shot on Teesside. In 2015, I worked on a short film called A Six & Two Three’s which was shot in Stockton where I met Daniel John Williams. He mentioned he was opening an acting school later in the year and I was going into my final year of studies knowing I would need cast for future films. In November 2015, I contacted Daniel and said I was looking for cast; especially the lead actress, delivering the lines written & directed by Rebecca McClean. Not long after, I received tapes from students auditioning for the role. One of whom was Lilly Ross. Her self-tape stood out from the rest. Not only did she audition with the material we asked for, but she added a personal touch. She talked about herself and even added her out-takes which the director and I loved! We simply had to meet her and see her in action. It was at that point Rebecca and I knew she would be the one for the film. Lilly did an amazing job battling through a five day shoot in various locations and VERY cold February weather. Everyone on the shoot; cast and crew, knows Lilly will do amazing things and has real potential to make a career in acting, especially co-star Joel, who has been in Emmerdale and Coronation street. Her work ethic on the film was second to none. She got on with everyone in the crew and was perfect for the role! The film won best written film in the Gala screening awards at The Arc. We’ve become really good friends since filming, her attitude and desire to succeed is admirable and I look forward to working with her on future projects. SHE’S GOING TO BE A STAR!!!
Acting since he was 8-years-old, training at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, he went on to star in a number of BBC Dramas such as Doctors, Casualty, A Way To Go, BBC3 Comedies and feature films Almost Married and Redirected. Close friends with actor Jamie Bell, Daniel has spent his life in and around the industry bringing his invaluable experience back to Teesside. Daniel is passionate and dedicated to ‘Discovering talent in hard to reach places’ and knew he wanted to find emerging talent from Teesside because he was constantly inspired by the humour and heart of the people. The focus of the school is to prepare and train student actors to a very high standard and get them ready for the industry. They do this by incorporating modern approaches and up to date techniques, etiqeuettes and information. ‘We are not a drama club – we are an Acting School and we are serious about getting results. We try to have fun but work is work and every child aged 7-15 is treated like young, working professionals from day one. Our adult classes are just as demanding and informative with expectations at the highest level.’ ‘We nurture the Talent that come to us and we push them very hard to stretch their imagination and encourage them to step out of their comfort zone. We inject confidence into each and every one of them, giving them all a voice and platform to express themselves.’ ‘We do not work alone, constantly bringing in established professional casting directors, producers and actors to scout and share their experiences with our students.’ Commercial classes take place in Stockton and masterclasses designed to enhance the actors’ abilities, understanding of character development and script analysis are at Acklam Hall. The Interview What were you like growing up, Kristen? As a child, I always loved performing and from such a young age I identified my passion in life which was Performing Arts. During afterschool clubs, I never wanted to go home, I always wanted to stay and learn more, practise more and take part in school plays and performances, even back then that was my passion. But, that was about the only thing I did like about school, school wasn’t a pleasant experience for me and I didn’t really enjoy it. My only focus was to become a superstar at the West End.
Did you get to follow your dreams? What happened after school? At 16, I went to a local college and Sara Durkin became my teacher, she was someone I really admired and looked up to and now I have the pleasure of working alongside her. Up until the age of 18, I thought I was still in with a chance and I auditioned for Stage School, but, that’s when my dreams were shattered and my confidence hit rock bottom. I had known I wasn’t quite what they were looking for but, still thought I could make it, but sadly, I wasn’t tall enough or slim enough and I didn’t have perfect little features and because of this, I wasn’t chosen. At 18 that was a hard knock to take!

I’m a resilient person, though, and after a while, I picked myself up and applied to St John’s University in York where I was accepted. I sang in local bars which enabled me to pay my way through university. By doing this I was still able to follow my passion and sing and perform. For then, that was enough. Three years later, I was thrilled to graduate with a Degree in Dance & Communication Arts; I still didn’t know what I would go onto do, but I headed back home and hoped for the best!
Was it daunting not knowing what you were going to do? Absolutely! I doubted my decision every step of the way, but then fate led me to a role that became available at a local college. I applied and, to my amazement, I got the job! I was 21 years old, working towards a PGCE and shortly after, I began teaching children under the age of 4 years old. It was such an amazing opportunity and I met so many amazing people who each taught me so much.

So when did you meet your husband, Scott? I was at home, visiting my parents one summer and during a night out I met him in a local bar. He asked if I’d care to dance and he had some really interesting moves (laughter). Of course, I obliged and the rest is history! Last year we celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary in Paris and renewed our vows. This summer we’ve been together for 14 years in total, I married my best friend and my soul mate – I’m a lucky girl!

GOSSIP Matilda (Tilly) is now 10 years old and she has also followed in my footsteps and shares my love for Performing Arts. She loves singing, dancing and performing and now I get to experience it all over again with her. We both share the same passion and I love that I get to spend this time with her.
How did you fit in work and family?
When we were told, we were so upset and in shock, I just couldn’t believe this was happening to us. Soon after, we learned that Scott’s condition was a lifelong illness and we had to learn to adapt.

Lip Smackers, Stokesley in August last year. My husband asked me what I would like for my birthday, I was fancying a career change so I suggested I would like a cake shop, he then suggested I go and find some premises and it all went from there. I had always enjoyed baking for family and friends and in the early days of the shop I was baking larger cakes but found cup cakes to be much more popular, all of my cakes are baked and decorated daily to ensue they are as fresh as possible, at £1 each they are great value for money. I am always thinking up new ideas, many of our cup cakes have a topping and a tasty filling, the most popular is the chocolate cake with a Dime Bar topping and caramel filling but I am more than happy to make bespoke cup cakes and take orders for special occasions. At Lip Smackers we also offer sandwiches, jackets and daily hot specials which can be found on our Facebook page, we were recently asked to cater for a corporate lunch which I really enjoyed, we had great feedback and I would be more than happy to cater for both adults and children’s birthday parties. Cotilda.com is based on mixing cultures together to create a diverse range of clothing through individual tastes. I focus on blending African and Dutch prints into Western silhouettes. CHUNK Chocolates opened for business November 1 2016 after chocolatier Natalie Collins saw demand rise for her artisan products through Farmers Markets and Food Festivals across the North East. “My best sellers are always the flavour bars”, Natalie said. “I adapt these for each season. VARICOSE VEINS: Nuffield Health Tees Hospital Reveals The Surprising Truth Consultant vascular surgeon Andrew Parry from Nuffield Health Tees Hospital says: “Men are generally less likely to discuss their health than women. When male patients seek treatment for varicose veins, it’s usually because they have become advanced causing symptoms such as aching pains, heaviness of the legs and itchy skin.” Once considered a condition confined to older women, treatment for varicose veins has become increasingly popular in men. According to leading not-for-profit healthcare provider Nuffield Health, the proportion of men being treated for varicose veins has increased by 40% in the past 10 years. In 2005 just one procedure in five was performed in men but figures just released for the past 12 months show that number has increased to more than one in four (28%). British research published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology shows that more men (40%) suffer varicose veins than do women (32%), yet the new figures from Nuffield Health show treatment is still mainly sought by women. Experts suggest the general reluctance of men to discuss their health may also mean they aren’t likely to understand they are in fact suffering from varicose veins.
Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction of valves in the veins. Each vein contains a series of valves, similar to locks in a canal. When they fail, blood flows backwards and pools in the veins causing a bulging appearance. Both men and women with varicose, or spider veins, often experience cramping or aching in the legs. Mr Parry says: “If you have large veins just under the surface of your skin; mild swelling or itching of your ankles or feet; achy, heavy or throbbing legs it is advisable to seek a consultation with a vascular specialist. A simple scan of your veins will help a surgeon diagnose the condition and develop a treatment plan.” There are a number of surgical treatments to remove problem veins. Depending on the type of procedure, it can be performed under a local or general anaesthetic and usually takes around one hour per leg. Mr Parry says: “Modern, minimally invasive techniques are far better at treating varicose veins, with much better results and lower risks of them ever coming back.

They are usually performed under local anaesthetic, on a walk-in walk out day case basis.
