Alesha Dixon

At the launch for her second
collection for Little Black Dress we got the chance to chat with the delightful Alesha Dixon about fashion, her career and how being a mum has changed her outlook on life.
Alesha got into fashion through her friend, Nicola Atkinson, who designed her enchanting outfits on Strictly Come Dancing and have stayed friends since. “I thought how can I create some special occasion dresses that don’t break the bank that women can feel fabulous in – that have the red carpet vibe without having to spend thousands of pounds.
The meticulously sublime Manchester House was a fitting venue for Alesha Dixon’s new collection as she dazzled wearing her own Rose Tulip dress. Alesha was as warm and charming as she was glamorous, talking with her was as if catching up with an old friend.
“You don’t have to spend a fortune. As much as the world of fashion is unobtainable for a lot of people you can still take inspiration from it and what’s going on the catwalk and who’s designing what and then applying that to mainstream clothing.”
Her attitude shines through in her range as a personification of her; it is captivating and beautiful but also accessible to every woman.
The collection is a collaborative effort with Little Black Dress through the choice of fabrics, designs and the trends of the season with which Alesha has final say.
“I’ve been really lucky that I’ve worked in an industry that has enabled me to wear some incredible designers over the years. It gave me an appreciation for the craft of making clothing and how much dedication it takes to come up with beautiful garments.” Said Alesha.
“I’ve been really inspired to play around with fashion whether it’s on stage as a performer or on TV as judge or a red carpet event so I feel very blessed. I often get a lot of feedback from friends who aspire to dress like that which is unrealistic and so is the price point, especially for a lot of people so it felt like a natural progression to going into fashion.”
“With anything you live and learn. You get to know what works for you and what doesn’t. I still make mistakes from time to time and that’s what fashion is your support to have fun with. You can’t always get it right. It’s trial and error and I love that about it. “For me what is perfect? There is no such thing. I’ve always said about myself I’m perfectly imperfect. The reality is I’m not striving to be perfect; I’m trying to be the best version of myself. I’m human like all of us and I have my bad days and my good days.” Fashion isn’t just for the young, free and single as multi-talented mum Alesha realised after the birth of her daughter Azura. Finding a new lease of life Alesha is now happier and more comfortable in herself than ever.

“When I first became a mum I’ve got to admit I went a bit mumsy. I was wearing things and thinking girl you’ve got to get it back! You’ve got to snap back. Because I feel you go through a phase where you want to be in comfy clothes like tracksuit bottoms.
“I wasn’t making an effort for a good few months but then there comes a point as I had to go back to work and it was quite challenging. I didn’t feel like myself for maybe a good year. Then I started to get a new confidence where genuinely you accept you have stretch marks and the rest but you’re content. “The human body is amazing. I’ve just carried a human being and you start to have a new confidence and that then helped with how I was carrying myself. It’s my birthday tomorrow, October 7th, and I turn 38. In the car today I text my partner saying I feel like I should have birthday blues but actually I was content. I feel more content now than I did when I was 28! Azura turned three last month and Alesha is loving being a mum more than ever saying her daughter has motivated her to step up her game. Coming from a challenging background Alesha worked as hard as possible to become the success she is today. “I’ve got this little person relying on me and I’ve got to make sure I can provide for her. I don’t want her to have the same struggles I did. I don’t want her to ‘have it easy’ but make it as easy as possible while still letting her learn.” Alesha’s Little Black Dress collection is now available at DC Couture Boutique, Yarm.

Ladies Day celebrated its 34th annual charity event in the grand marquee at Hardwick Hall, Sedgefield.
This year there were 631 ladies attending the day and Nicki Chapman was this year’s guest speaker continuing the tradition of inviting interesting and popular personalities to speak at the event. There was also a prosecco reception and many diverse and appealing stalls to browse such as DC Couture,Poppys Hairdressing and Val Hill. Attendees were also treated to an excellent four course lunch and a fashion show by DC Couture. The seeds of NELD were sown by twelve women in Darlington in 1981 with the aim of raising funds for deserving local charities. Our President, Jean Stuart, was one of those twelve. Since then NELD has become a very prestigious event raising over £262,000 to date. In 2015 NELD raised £18,900 for local charities and this year’s event is expected to significantly exceed this sum. NELD supports two or three carefully chosen small local North East charities each year ensuring that all monies raised can make a significant difference to their beneficiaries. This year’s charities are Cleveland Motor Neurone Disease Association and Saras Hope Foundation who are thoroughly deserving of this support. NELD are constantly looking for suitable local charities and invite applicants to contact them at neld2016@ outlook.com. Gossip catches up with Yarm newlyweds Joanna and Damon Smith whose special day at The Cleveland Tontine, in Staddlebridge, Northallerton was a surprise for their 60 guests. “We sent out invitations to an ‘Engagement Dinner’,” Said Joanna. “We were planning to get married abroad next year just the two of us so this was a dinner in the UK for family and friends.” The guests however were in for a pleasant surprise when the dinner turned out to be the wedding ceremony. “We thought it would be a good ice-breaker and put everyone in a good mood! We’ve had so many people tell us it was the best wedding they’d ever been to and they had to pinch themselves the next morning to make sure it wasn’t a dream (ourselves included!)” Joanna and Damon also wanted to avoid a lot of the stress that comes with the traditional wedding such as the hen and stag nights, party favors, and the honeymoon; “We have a two-year old son, Leo, so it’s a bit late for all that!”

Joanna and Damon hatched the idea while on holiday in June this year for the surprise September wedding and had a stroke of luck meeting Andrea Lunt, The Cleveland Tontine’s Sales and Events Organizer, who gave it her all for a flawless event. “Nothing was too much trouble for her and she didn’t think it was a crazy idea at all! She really got on board and arranged all the logistics so that no one would see the bride and groom in their wedding outfits.”

Andrea said “Without a doubt the biggest challenge was the big reveal and I have to say how special it was to watch the guests’ faces as they entered the beautiful Cleveland Room and they saw for the first time Damon standing alongside Joanna, who looked stunning in her wedding dress, having seen her just 15 minutes earlier in a different dress and hair-style! “It was hard to believe that it was just two months earlier that I met Damon and Joanna for the first time to discuss their wedding and to hear that they planned to invite their guests to an engagement party where they would surprise everyone by getting married.” In planning the ceremony they discussed several scenarios before finding the perfect one that included sneaking in the registrar via a fire exit to keep the secret. “Working with Damon and Joanna was an absolute pleasure from start to finish. As a wedding planner it’s vital to listen to your bride and groom’s ideas. Not only what they want but also what they don’t want. Every wedding is different but this one was more different than most!”
The façade was well and truly kept by all involved. Joanna and Damon praised The Cleveland Tontine’s staffs’ utmost secrecy; “Even when Damon delivered the wedding flowers and candelabra at lunchtime on the day the staff wouldn’t drop their act until he proved he was the groom.” It was a strictly need-to-know basis and even the Best Man, Damon’s friend John, didn’t know until he was handed the rings on his way in and told “You’re up!” When the doors to The Cleveland Room opened Thriller came through on the piano and everyone ‘screamed and cried’ as Joanna and Damon greeted the guests as they took their seats. There was one close call when Damon’s friend Peter Bell, owner of ‘The House’ in Yarm, noticed the clothes he was wearing weren’t the ones he sold Damon the week before but he was quickly whisked off before asking any more questions. In keeping with the plan of removing the stress from a normal wedding Joanna and Damon stuck with local businesses that they knew and trusted to ensure a perfect day including photography by Michael Cartwright and flower
arrangement by Nicola of The Flower Room, Yarm. “Our pianist Naomi Haigh was even pulling faces at our son to stop him crying while she played Cole Porter! “Make-up was by Eaglescliffe’s own Kim Kardashian, Rochelle Bates, who is the best at what she does and has the best prices too. Kelly and Jess at Tate Hair Salon in Yarm had one wedding guest after another on the day! Finally we knew the cake would be delicious but we didn’t think we’d still be hearing about it with people telling us it’s the most delicious cake they’ve ever had courtesy of Bella Beau Beautiful Cakes.” The ceremony itself took 15 minutes. “When the Registrar said ‘You may now kiss the bride!’ We got a huge cheer and standing ovation.” Following the ceremony The Tontine transformed into a “Magical, candlelit dining room for a three course meal and later became a dancefloor.”

JD TRAINING COMING SOON This month the trainers at JD training have been completing training in order to deliver autism and sign language courses in the future. JD Training are running an evening paediatric course over 4 weeks starting on the 2nd November
Due to high demand we have added a one day emergency first aid at work with paediatrics on the 16th November.
We have added a level 3 Food safety course in November spread over 2 weeks on the 21st and 28th November.
If you need IOSHH we are running a course throughout November, one day a week - every Friday starting the 4th of November.
Our clinical skills tutors are enjoying working alongside employers organizing their own PA Team’s training. Working together with the employer ensures their needs are met by designing their own Care package.

New Leaf DRAKE THE BOOKSHOP The Bookshop is delighted to announce that they are moving on to bigger and better things Saturday 8th October... was a big day for both the family-run shop and the independent book industry as a whole. It not only saw their official opening in their new premises on silver street, Stockton but they also had their 1st birthday party; this featured a Q&A session from debut novelist Kit de Waal who also officially opened the shop from 3:00pm; and joined in the Books are my Bag (BAMB) celebrations that took place nationwide. Doors opened at 9:00am and there was cake, promotions and party games through until 5:00pm. Richard, Mel and Matthew, the family behind the award-winning bookshop, have been running DRAKE – The Bookshop since the end of September 2015 in the Enterprise Arcade on Stockton High Street but now have the opportunity to expand not only their stock but their opening times and ideas as well as create an after school tutoring centre for children from 5 to 16. The bookshop is the 1st independent new bookshop in the town since Dressers closed last century and has an eclectic selection of books as well as a dedicated section for Dyslexia friendly reading and local authors. “We are very proud of our eclectic nature. While we do stock the bestsellers we want to give our customers the chance to take away a copy of the book they didn’t realise they wanted”, said Melanie who owns the shop alongside Richard. “The people of Stockton have been amazing from day 1. The support we have had from customers, who in
lots of cases have become friends, has been incredible. We have had offers of help putting up cases; a request to provide cakes for the opening and comments like ‘it’s lovely to have a proper bookshop in Stockton again’ is so heartwarming” Richard Drake. The Bookshop will also be involved in the 1st Stockton Book Festival which takes place on October 15th. As well as visits from authors such as Kes Gray, Ellie Irving and Elizabeth Haynes there will be live via Skype storytime sessions from children’s authors including Sue Hendra, author of Supertato. Nick Sharratt (author Shark in the Park and illustrator of Tracey Beaker amongst others) will be joining us for a multi school visit on Monday October 31st and signed stock will be available in the shop. All Councillors are unpaid volunteers who strive hard to ensure that Ingleby Barwick continues to be a safe and pleasant place to live. The Council has 'Powers' granted by Parliament which includes the authority to raise money through taxation (the precept) and a range of powers to spend public money. Various projects have been undertaken including installation of the War Memorial, Christmas Tree, progression of the proposed
new Community Centre at The Rings, to name but a few.

Following a suggestion received from a member of the public at a Town Council meeting, for the provision of cycles stands, it was agreed that this would be pursued. Ingleby Barwick Ward Councillors funded bike stands at Greenside and Beckfields shopping centres with the Town Council agreeing to fund the proposed stands at Ingleby Barwick Community Hall from the Seamer Wind Farm Community Fund.

There are four areas; northern, central, western and eastern. Ingleby Barwick is in the Eastern area along with Hilton, Maltby and Thornaby. There is a total budget of £180,000, which is distributed between the areas, with an allocation of £ 30,000 per Steering Group plus £ 60,000 towards possible larger schemes. The Steering Groups consist of various representatives including Ward and Parish/Town Councillors. Various road safety schemes have been implemented since 2005 which also include; safe crossing points for the Primary Schools in Ingleby Barwick, those most recently implemented being Pelican and Zebra crossings on Lowfields Avenue and Barwick Way. Ingleby Barwick East and West Ward Councillors, as well as the Town Council have provided financial contributions towards the schemes.

The Town Council funds Ingleby Barwick Enforcement Service with finance raised through the Parish Precept. The cost to provide the service in 2016/2017 is £ 48,616 with an additional sum of £ 467 for provision of the maintenance service for Beckfields CCTV. The cost per household for providing the dedicated service is approximately 13 pence per household per week. The Officers work closely with the Police to reduce Anti Social Behaviour and criminal activity ensuring that Ingleby Barwick is a safe place to live. The Town Council is currently in the process of reviewing this facility to ensure the best services.

The Town Council are currently working towards building an additional community centre at The Rings. The land will be transferred by Persimmon Homes to S.B.C. who will then transfer the land to Ingleby Barwick Town Council, by appropriate Legal Agreements. The Town Council are in the process of producing a Business Plan which is required as a support document for various aspects of the required stages of the project. Updates will be provided on the Town Council website. Any groups wishing to express an interest in using the facilities please get in touch with the Town Clerk on the contact details provided.

News and Updates Leisure Centre S.B.C. recently held a public consultation at Ingleby Barwick Library in All Saints Academy, to show residents the plans for the proposed new Leisure Centre, which includes a 25 metre swimming pool, a gym & fitness rooms. The complex will also be housing a library and customer service point. Currently in the consultation stages the complex is expected to be completed by 2018 on land to the front of All Saints Academy.

Asian Seabass, Thai Fish Cake, Udon Noodle, Spring Onion and Chilli Salad, Shredded Pak Choi, Red Chilli Dressing Ingredients For 2 People
INGREDIENTS 2 Seabass Fillets 200ml Vegetable Oil 150g White Fish Salt 1 Clove Garlic 5 tbsp Light Soy Sauce 4 Fresh Red Chilli 2 Limes Handful Fresh Coriander 50ml Groundnut Oil 10g Fresh Ginger 2 tbsp Sugar 2 Tbsp Tomato Ketchup 1 Pack Udon Noodles 3 Radish 1/4 Cucumber 1 Pak Choi 2 Spring Onions

METHOD For The Chilli Dressing Take 2 Red Chillis, The Ginger, 1/2 Garlic Clove, Juice of 1 Lime, 1/2 the Coriander, Tomato Ketchup, Sugar, Groundnut Oil, 2 Tbsp of Light Soy and Blitz All in a Food Processor until combined, Slowly Add Most of The Vegetable Oil bit by bit leaving a little to fry the fish in. Stop once all the oil has gone and season to taste. For The Fishcakes Take the White Fish, 1 Red Chilli, Rest of Coriander, Garlic, Soy Sauce and Lime Juice. Blitz again in a food processor until a paste, add seasoning. With your hands form the paste into little fish cakes. To Bring Together.... Shred the Pak Choi and Blanch the Udon Noodles in boiling for for 1 minute, drain and cool with Ice Water. Thinly slice the remaining 1 Chilli and 2 Spring Onion Take the rest of the vegetable oil in a frying pan. Bring the pan 2 a vigorous heat place fish cakes in 2 minutes on one side 2 minutes on the other. In the same pan fry your Seabass skin side down and leave for 4 minutes until crispy, remove your fish cakes and place to the side, turn your Seabass over and fry for a further minute, remove from pan. Season with Salt. In a separately pan heat your red chilli dressing up and add blanched noodles and Pak Choi, Remove when hot. Place noodles in the bottom of your serving bowl, place fish on top and fishcake on top again, to finish off scatter your shredded spring onions and Chillis over the dish.

The Golden Age Of Hollywood Ball The Rita Hayworths, Fred Astaires and Jean Harlows of Teesside are being asked to don their glitziest togs and attend this year’s major fundraiser for My Sisters Place held at Gisborough Hall. My Sisters Place Based on Borough Road Middlesbrough, is now in its 14th year of operation. As a “one stop shop” they support women and their children affected by domestic violence to live safe and free from abuse across Teesside. As many as 1 in 4 women will be affected by domestic violence at some point in their life- the extent of the problem is huge and services such as My Sisters Place are much needed, as the charity approaches it’s 15th year delivering services on Teesside it has supported over 7000 women.
Michelle O’Rourke, Service Development Manager at My Sisters Place said: “We are really looking forward to this Golden Age of Hollywood charity ball. Previous years have seen Magicians, 20s dance troupes and the best live bands from the area. Whilst living in Antwerp, I attended Academie Noord art school and discovered I have a creative talent. During my degree course, I developed and refined an initiative which can support my love for painting, promote an “art for all” philosophy and benefit local good causes. And so the Glass Half Full original painting became the logo of this scheme which provides an easy and creative route for businesses to give back to local good causes. You can rent an original oil painting, exchange for a different image every 2 months enhancing the office or reception for visitors and staff. Paintings are delivered and exchanged at your convenience. You may choose from the existing collection shown on this website and commission new images. The charge is £15 per month for 1 painting, (*£25 per month for 2 paintings). You will also support good causes as £5 (*£10) of that monthly amount will be paid back to the local community, to a different local charity every time the pot fills to £200. Free trials are currently available and of course you can see paintings in person, just contact me and I’ll visit you with some samples. Sue Thompson I’m Sue Thompson and my business is Catch Design Management. I am based in the market town of Stokesley. It is not where I expected to be as married mum of two in the tenth year of running my own business, but it suits me just fine! I never thought about running my own business when I was a young whipper-snapper starting out for the first time as PR Assistant, it never even occurred to me when I had my first baby, whilst managing high profile accounts for a design agency in Bath. But somehow, somewhere it seemed like a good idea, when working full time was no longer an option and flexible working hadn’t really been invented yet! Working for myself gives me so much pleasure. Yes, I can have the day off if I want to, but I can’t actually remember the last time I did. Many of my clients are working mums too, so they benefit from my flexible hours, and late night email chats just as much as I do. My business is mainly there to help and support local small businesses, using my marketing knowledge and skills to be that the ‘bolt on’ marketing department you can call upon when your business needs a boost. I like to think in more recent years’ social media has been my weapon of choice as I realised that it was one of the most cost effective ways small businesses can reach their audience in many creative ways. Supporting, creating and managing accounts for businesses it a lot of what I do, but I still like to keep my hand in on the design side, where I really began to grow my business. A lot of businesses still feel it is unnecessary to have a website or even a logo and I know I don’t ever think of buying from businesses who haven’t got that professional edge. It doesn’t have to cost the earth to put yourself out there in a professional way and I can be sure your business will benefit from it. In addition to my small business clients helping with branding, marketing and social media I have also been lucky to have trained on the job in developing responsive websites for businesses. Helping to understand where a website can take them and what the real business benefits are. As I said I have learnt whilst working and I certainly find I am still learning everyday as the digital world continues to grow, but I am always honest and if I don’t know something, I usually know someone who does.

The Crafty Spaniel Jane Butler is an Ingleby Barwick resident who set up her self-employed craft business in 2003. She is a regular featured crafter at Ingleby Barwick Community Market. She is also a Volunteer Coordinator for Ingleby Barwick Community Partnership. Previously taking orders for handmade cards and wedding stationery, Jane used to sell from Flower Buds florist at the Beckfields shopping parade. ‘I have diversified quite a bit since then’, said Jane. She makes and sells handmade cards, decorated bottles, decoupaged trinket boxes and much, much more. She also customises items to customers requests, creating many original ‘one of a kind’ gifts. I have always been a creative person and I love to dabble with watercolours, polymer clay and sewing etc. ‘It’s important to me that I don’t allow my disability to stop me doing the things I love.’ she says. ‘Crafting is very therapeutic, it helps brighten my mood and is an excellent form of distraction from chronic pain.’ Jane’s other love besides crafting is her love of animals, dogs in particular. Hence the name The Crafty Spaniel. She has owned several rescue dogs to date.

I have always loved creating Jewellery but decided to use simple beading and wire working to make pretty, quirky but affordable pieces. I create simple but beautiful sterling silver and silver plated handmade jewellery. All individually hand crafted and made to order using the finest materials. However for those who are looking for something specific I will work with you in order to design your perfect piece for any special person in your life. This last year has been a very exciting time seeing my business start to grow. I’m now looking ahead to a busy Christmas period where I will be found at lots of local fayres.
