2020/21 Impact REPORT

Hard to believe that was only 12 months. 20/21 was an extremely challenging year for all of us at Goodwill and FOR nonprofits across Southern Arizona. Under the pressures of COVID19, many in our community faced health challenges, job loss, hunger and sadly lots of local families dealt with the loss of loved ones. The only way to make it through a year like that is with an amazing team and great support and that is what we had.

As we adapted to the the day to day challenges our organization and the people we serve were facing, one thing was consistent - The support and generosity from our neighbors, friends and community partners in Southern Arizona.

Despite COVID, that support enabled us to grow the services we offer the community. Newly launched programs include, Youth Opportunity Accelerator, Homeless Youth Outreach, Bereavement Counseling, the Young Adult Reentry Program with more program announcements planned in the near future.

Homeless Youth Outreach, Bereavement Counseling, Peer Support Groups & More....

4,692 VISITS to our METRO/REC Youth Resource Centers.

Over 280 YOUTH gained on the job work experience or 1 on 1 employment support.

More than 296 YOUTH received FREE Academic support including GED testing, High School Diploma help, tutoring, and skills development.

Despite the impacts of COVID19, our Youth Program Staff worked hard to offer several new programs to Southern Arizona. In fact, they helped over 375 more youth this year than in 2019/2020.

ACADEMIC SERVICES (520) 308-8654 We provide FREE in-house tutoring and academic support to all Goodwill® employees and program participants. Participants can earn their GED or an online High School Diploma. Walk-ins ages 16-24 welcome at the Metro Youth Program, 300 N. 4th Ave. YOung ADULT REENTRY (520) 628-1883 A job training and service learning program for young adults ages 18-24. The program’s goal is to ensure young adults involved in the justice system, and/or who left high school prior to graduation, are prepared with the skills needed to meet the the needs of local labor markets in order to obtain HIGHER PAYING JOBS. HOMELESS YOUTH OUTREACH (520) 404-6988 OR (520) 310-8045 Goodwill is working with YHDP to address youth homelessness in Pima County.

Goodwill Metro Youth Center and Goodwill REC Youth Center seek to disrupt the causes of youth homelessness by engaging youth in leadership roles to provide a peer-to-peer approach to the engagement of homeless youth.

YOUNG ADULT REEntry

NOW ENROLLING YOUNG ADULTS AGES 18-24.

Jamie is a 37-year-old male who has spent the majority of his life incarcerated.

In August 2019, he enrolled in the GARP program. Jamie’s initial goal was to gain employment, something he has never done in his life. It was stressful at first as this was all so foreign to him. Nevertheless, Jamie remained determined to move his life forward in a positive manner, even in the midst of many setbacks when he’s come close to giving up on life. Although he’s faced struggles with substance abuse, his mental health and finding the right types of supports, he has never given up. Jamie learned about GAP Ministries Culinary Training through other participants and staff and his heart became set on attending this training.

While Jamie missed a few enrollment opportunities due to his mental health and substance abuse struggles, he was steadfast in his dream of going through with this training. In the meantime, he chose to volunteer as a means to get some experience and give back. Jamie has this natural urge to help others and after realizing the volunteer work he was doing was helping the community (feeding the elderly, low income kids, etc.), he was hooked.

Jamie completed a recovery program in June of 2021 and finally got accepted into the July 2021 training. Not only did Jamie graduate in October of 2021, he was valedictorian of his class. He is shown in the photo with the knife set he won for being top in his class. The background photo is Jamie with Nicholas, a GARP participant and earlier graduate of the same culinary training celebrating Jamie’s success. Jamie didn’t waste any time after graduation.

He got assistance with updating his resume and started applying for cook positions. Within two weeks of graduating Jamie got hired at Blue Willow restaurant as a cook. His tenacity to keep going is inspirational; his energy is infectious and his heart is so big. We are so proud of and happy for Jamie.

Adrian Orozco hasn’t stopped moving since joining Goodwill® of Southern Arizona in late May of 2021 - whether it was hustling around the Houghton store as a donor greeter, delivering product to stores around town as a truck driver in Transportation, or as an individual fully committed to taking advantage of every resource and opportunity provided to him by Goodwill®.

Adrian was new to Tucson, living with a friend near work but his goal was to get his own place. In order to do so, he determined he needed to make more money. Adrian partnered with management at the Houghton store and Transportation Department to turn his success as a key contributor at Houghton, into a new role as a truck driver. Throughout that process, he worked with Michael and Quinn in Employee Development to help with budgeting and saving.

Less than 6 months after he started with Goodwill, Adrian achieved his goal of moving into his own place but instead of getting comfortable with his success, he set a new goal - to get his commercial driver’s license. In order to get that rolling, Adrian enrolled in classes with HDS Truck Driving Institute and has recently passed the test to obtain his CDL permit.

Still nowhere near his one year anniversary with Goodwill, Adrian leverages every resource and relationship provided to him. Combine that with his drive and hunger to be the best version of himself, Adrian has found a formula for sustained success, comfort, and happiness... And he’s just getting started. Career Ladder Training participants , on average increased their wages from $14.83 to $18.50! $18.50!

The average wage of our Adult Case Management placements was $16.03 with over 50 individuals placed.

Our Youth Case Management placed 134 young people in employment or post secondary education.
