Mission Services Success Stories Jason’s Story Jason took his time before deciding to search for a job. He frequently spoke with Kathy, the Goodwill Career Development Facilitator at the Job Connection in Turning Points. Despite their encounters in the computer lab and parking lot, Jason wasn’t ready for work due to personal challenges. He needed to rebuild his self-confidence and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Jason promised Kathy he’d seek help once he felt prepared. One day, Jason recognized his readiness for change and sought support from Kathy. He confided that ongoing depression was his main obstacle, making it hard to job hunt. This depression stemmed from the discovery that his wife and daughter had been using heroin together, leading to his daughter’s fatal overdose. The subsequent divorce, foreclosure, and homelessness exacerbated his depression. Over time, as his grief lessened, he decided to devise an employment plan with Kathy’s guidance. Starting by retrieving lost documents, Jason worked on his to-do list with Kathy’s help. Acquiring his birth certificate, valid ID, and Social Security card, he also consulted a psychiatrist for depression medication. As he accomplished these tasks, his self-doubt diminished. Moving onto housing, Kathy connected Jason with a housing case manager at Turning Points, leading him to secure a small apartment through St. Vincent DePaul. With stable housing, Jason was now ready for his job search. Interested in retail and customer service roles, Jason had prior success in these fields. Kathy began generating job leads aligned with his vocational goal. Six months after their first meeting, Jason secured a position with a family-owned wholesale appliance distributor. His newfound job brought happiness and a renewed sense of well-being. Jason appreciates Goodwill’s presence during his time of despair and values Kathy’s unwavering support. His story is a testament to the impact of resilience and assistance in times of adversity.

Mission Services Success Stories | 2022 Annual Report

Anne’s Story Ann’s life took a dark turn when she fell into a criminal path orchestrated by someone she trusted. Her husband’s manipulation landed her in a federal prison, serving nearly three years for conspiring to distribute illegal substances across state lines. Upon her release, Ann made a bold decision to move to Arcadia, where her family could provide much-needed support. She was determined to find a job and contribute to household expenses. However, the job hunt proved unexpectedly challenging for Ann. Under strict federal home supervision, she faced stringent requirements for leaving her house and securing job interviews. Prospective employers were required to contact her probation officer, and this complex process often deterred them from considering her candidacy. Ann’s sister’s attempts to help also hit dead ends, leaving her feeling hopeless and financially burdened. Desperate for a solution, Ann turned to Goodwill’s Job Connection office, where she met David. With his assistance, she connected with a store manager who was willing to navigate the probation officer’s inquiries. This breakthrough led to an immediate interview and a job offer—an incredible turnaround after facing repeated rejections. Ann’s gratitude towards Goodwill knows no bounds. The organization’s support gave her a second chance at life, propelling her toward positive changes. Now equipped with a GoodPartner Coach, she’s pursuing new goals, including seeking custody of her child—a step made possible by her newfound employment, a requirement set by the court. With her job enabling her to fulfill probation conditions, Ann anticipates an early release from supervision. When a string of discouraging “no’s” suddenly transforms into a resounding “yes,” lives undergo not just change, but true transformation. This remarkable shift is a testament to the power of opportunity and support, encapsulating Goodwill’s mission to make such impactful differences in people’s lives.
