COVER STORY GRAHAM DELAET CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC A ROARING SUCCESS

The Graham DeLaet Charity Golf Classic, held on July 11th, 2013 at the Willows Golf and Country Club, was a huge success! The morning began with a Trick Shot Clinic hosted by Brennen Gee, Head Professional at the Willows, featuring Graham DeLaet. Graham arrived at the driving range in a yellow hot-rod golf cart and delighted more than 200 people with insight into the success of his golf game, trick shots, and witty commentary. Teams hit the course at 11:00 a.m. for a shotgun start with perfect weather and many great golfers on hand. Golfers had the opportunity to take in contests, such as the Hole in One contest sponsored by O’Brian’s O’Finance and Longest Drive contest sponsored by A1 Lo-cost Income Tax. Once the golfers finished their rounds they were able to follow Graham and his team through the last three holes of play. Graham had many fans in attendance based on the large following he had on the final few holes. After the round, the golfers had the opportunity to pose for photos with Graham, enjoyed an excellent steak dinner from the staff at the Willows and bid on valuable silent auction items. The program was hosted by Kevin Waugh, CTV Saskatoon’s Sports Director who shared a brief look from Graham’s win of the Golf Saskatchewan Men’s Amateur Championship in 2006 to his recent successes on the PGA Tour this year. Lifelong friend Jeff Will asked Graham burning questions that the crowd was dying to know the answers to and Graham, with the help of Kevin, lead an exciting live auction resulting in some generous bids for a good cause. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the event- golfers, donators, key contributors and sponsors. Without your support this event would not have been possible. We will be able to announce an official total of funds raised for Junior Golf in Saskatchewan and the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation next month.

To get CN Future Links Clinics and programs running in your community please contact Phil Grosse.

FIRST NATIONS SUMMER GAMES Golf Saskatchewan recently sanctioned the First Nation Summer Games in Prince Albert July 11-17. SASKATCHEWAN GOLF HALL OF FAME 2013 INDUCTEES SASKATOON, SK — The Saskatchewan Golf Hall of Fame (SGHF) will celebrate the achievements of the four additions to its Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 28th at the Riverside Country Club in Saskatoon. The inductees include three players and one builder with achievements and contributions to the sport of golf in Saskatchewan. The fourth inductees class to the Saskatchewan Golf Hall of Fame include:

RON DOSDALL (Player Category) Over the past century as golf courses developed throughout North America, the expense and difficulty of irrigating grass greens required a creative solution. Thus, some courses came into existence using a mixture of sand and crankcase oil for the putting surface. Golfers use a grooming tool to smooth out footprints or bumps before putting. In Saskatchewan, the number of sand green courses now stands at 89, but peaked at 137 around 1980. The hotly contested provincial championships attracted a strong field of 120 to 160 competitors. Many golfers who got their start on a sand green course went on to play in other championships. Ron Dosdall won the Saskatchewan sand greens championship in Moose Jaw in 1975. This launched a remarkable streak of seven consecutive provincial titles through 1981. He dominated the competition during those years and acquired the nickname ‘King of the North’. Ron respected the game of golf and developed a lifelong passion for playing. Always a fierce competitor, he also made many friendships with his quick wit and love of jokes. Ron’s hometown is Nokomis, Saskatchewan. After studying for his teaching degree in Regina, he and his wife, Belle, moved to Meadow Lake. During his high-school teaching career he coached students in many sports and maintained a keen interest in their lives afterwards.

Ron continued his strong involvement with the Meadow Lake Golf Club after they switched to grass greens in 1982. As Club President in 1994, he spearheaded the funding and construction of the back nine holes. He was a driving force for establishing a huge tree nursery and planting thousands of trees that now beautify the course. His legacy and passion for golf will live on for generations to come. Ron Dosdall passed away in 2011 at age 64. JEFF MAKOHON (Player Category) Jeff Makohon started winning provincial titles at an early age: he was Bantam champion in 1984 and 1985, Juvenile winner in 1987, and Saskatchewan Junior Champion for three years, 1987 to 1989. He brought great honour to the province by winning the Canadian Juvenile Championship in 1987 and the Canadian Junior Men’s Championship in 1989. No other Saskatchewan male golfer has been able to accomplish this. Recognition for Jeff came with awards for SaskSport Male Athlete of 1989 and the Score Magazine Canadian male junior golfer. In addition to four national junior events, Jeff competed in the 1990 Canadian Amateur as a member of the Saskatchewan Willingdon Cup team. He was Saskatchewan Amateur runner-up in 1992.

Growing up in Saskatoon, Jeff’s top interests were playing hockey and racing on the alpine ski team. When his peewee hockey team won the provincial championship, the coach was Saskatchewan Golf Hall of Fame member Jim Scissons. Jeff’s grandfather introduced him to golf after shortening three clubs for him to use. He spent many summer days working and playing at the Wildwood Golf Club under the tutelage of Rob Lee. Alex Kozakavich coached him as a provincial team member. Jeff was a Canadian Golf Foundation Academic and Golf Excellence scholarship winner from 1988 to 1990. While attending Rice University in Houston, he was on the Division One golf team for four years and recognized as Academic All-American in three of those years.

Competing with Bart Goodwin in the prestigious Champions Cup Invitational Two-man Team Championship in Texas, they won the event in 2001 and 2004. Jeff and his wife and children currently live near Dallas, Texas. Jeff Makohon became a member of the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

RON STEWART (Player Category) Ron Stewart has had outstanding success at every amateur level in golf. He was the Saskatchewan Junior Champion in 1970 and on the provincial team twice. He was the Saskatchewan Amateur Champion in 1977, 1987, and 2007 as well as being the runner-up two times. As a member of Saskatchewan’s Willingdon Cup team three times, and the designated alternate five times, he competed in many Canadian Championships. Ron was on the provincial mid-amateur team in 1998 and 2001, then the senior team in 2012. He has always relished competing at a high level, and his record includes numerous tournament wins throughout northern Saskatchewan.

Ron has been a member of Cooke Municipal Golf Course in Prince Albert since 1963, and served as president of the men’s club for five years. He took lessons from Hubert Cooke, improving his course management and finesse skills as well as shot-making. He has had a great interest in young people learning the game of golf and his involvement with the Prince Albert Junior Golf Club spans many years. His son, David, grew up participating in this program. Ron’s most memorable golf event was playing with David as a teammate in the 2007 Willingdon Cup competition at Riverside Country Club in Saskatoon. Over the years, whenever Prince Albert hosted a major event, Ron was an enthusiastic volunteer: the Canadian Junior and Canadian Ladies’ Golf Championships, Canadian Club Golf Championships, Western Canada Summer Games, Saskatchewan Winter Games, and the North American Indigenous Games. Last year he was tournament chair of the Saskatchewan High School Golf Championship and he is currently involved in scheduling school sports events. Congratulations to Ron Stewart, now in his fifth decade of representing Saskatchewan at four different levels of national competition.

JACK MCDONALD (Builder Category) Jack McDonald is one of Golf Canada’s foremost experts on the Rules of Golf. As the Canadian committee chair, he worked with Royal & Ancient and USGA members on the Joint Rules Committee responsible for ensuring that the Rules of Golf maintain the integrity of the game.

Jack was instrumental in developing the National Rules Officials Education Program. He introduced the first online certification program, which other countries have now adopted. Jack has criss-crossed the country teaching rules seminars, and is well known for his high standards on and off the course. He emphasises “getting it right” and is always available to discuss rulings. In addition to officiating at many Canadian Open and Amateur competitions, Jack has been a rules official at prestigious international events such as the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and President’s Cup. Jack was born in Rosetown and grew up in Swift Current. His golf began at Elmwood Golf and Country Club where he worked during the summer. While studying chemical engineering at the University of Saskatchewan he competed on the Husky golf team. As a keen competitor, Jack has played in numerous provincial and national Amateurs and Mid-Amateurs.

Over the past 35 years, Jack has been very active on the golf scene in Kamloops, B.C. He was tournament chair of the 1999 Canadian Amateur and the 2001 Mid-Amateur. Starting as a zone representative to the British Columbia Golf Association in 1987, he held various offices culminating in the presidency in 1997 and 1998. Becoming a governor of Golf Canada in 1998, he served on many national committees: CN Future Links, Greens, Player Development and Amateur Championships. He ultimately became the 107th President of the organization. Jack received the British Columbia Official of the Year award in 2008. His niece, Nancy Harvey, preceded him into the Saskatchewan Golf Hall of Fame. Tickets for the event will be $75.00 and are available for the purchase from the Golf Saskatchewan website at www.golfsaskatchewan.org. ABOUT THE SASKATCHEWAN GOLF HALL OF FAME The Saskatchewan Golf Hall of Fame has been established to recognize the achievements of players and builders of golf in Saskatchewan. There’s still time to host your Golf Fore the Cure event! Events are of no cost to the club and it possible to run your event on a regularly scheduled women’s league day. These are the six steps to running an event: 1. Find a date that works best for your Golf Fore the Cure event. 2. Register with Golf Canada at: http://convio.cancer.ca/site/PageServer?pagename=GOLF_CAN_coordinators_application. 3. You will receive a GFTC event (from Golf Canada, Molson, Subaru & Investors Group) kit 2-3 weeks in advance. These kits contain signage, prizing, and additional program materials that will help you run your events. 4. Use pledge forms found in the event kit to raise money for breast cancer research (or support programs). 5. Run the event. 6. Within 2 weeks, have your post event package sent back to Golf Canada with all of the cheques and pledge forms. Check out these two events coming up!
