COVER STORY

SASKATCHEWAN MID-AMATEUR MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP CHANGES ELIGIBILTY CRITERIA When the Deer Valley Golf Club welcomes the 2013 Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur Men’s Championship July 29-31 there will be a significant change from the 2012 championship. New for 2013 is a change in eligibility for golfers in the Mid-Amateur Men’s Championship. In previous years golfers had to be 25 years-of-age to compete but that is coming to an end. In 2013, golfers competing for the President’s Cup must be 35 years-ofage to be eligible to compete. Prior to 2006, Golf Canada required Mid-Amateur players to be 40 years-old or older but made the change to allow golfers 25 and older to compete. Golf Saskatchewan followed suit but are now making a change all of their own.

“We’ve talked about reserving a couple quota spots to send our best 25-35 year-old players to compete (at nationals),” says Dupont. “We would provide them the opportunity to qualify through the Amateur Men’s Championship. Hopefully we will have a decision and criteria to announce soon. “Hopefully this (change in eligibility) will be seen in a positive light and will make both events more enjoyable for all competitors.” Have your say! Comment on this article by sending us a tweet @GolfSK or by posting on our Facebook page.

“We have a very talented group of golfers in this province who fall into the 35 and older age group and in the past we have almost forgotten about this group,” says Golf Saskatchewan Manager of Tournaments and Player Services Darren Dupont. “We have very good golfers that are 25-35 and it has almost been like there are two (Amateur Men’s Championships) each year. We need to have that distinction that these are two different events and changing the eligibility will hopefully do that for us.” Golf Saskatchewan still has the opportunity to send the top players age 25-and-over to compete at nationals but is not making that decision yet.

The new and improved President’s Cup will have a new champion lifting it in 2013. The Mid-Am will be held at Deer Valley Golf Club July 29-31.
