MOOSE JAW GOLF HISTORY CELEBRATED IN NEW BOOK Kenneth Bradley is taking a look back at Moose Jaw golfing history in the book Out-of-Bounds: A Century of Golf in Moose Jaw. “I really began researching the question ‘How old is the Hillcrest?’ without any thought of writing a book,” states Bradley. “I found some early 1900’s golf stories in the Moose Jaw Evening Times that indicated the course was nearing 100 years in the same location. I discovered many interesting characters that were very capable players such as Jack Cuthbert, the 1917-19 Saskatchewan Amateur Champion or General G.S. Tuxford, a WWI hero who won the first Saskatchewan Senior Men’s Championship in 1927. As I found many more interesting golf articles, it became apparent that I had to collect the data to commemorate 100 years of golf in Moose Jaw and possibly write a book for the occasion.” Bradley has been researching Moose Jaw newspaper archives during the winters since 2007 to collect materials used in the book. “The library work led me to a number of personal interviews of longtime members and old pros from the Hillcrest to fill in some extra details of events or personal stories about the club. I also interviewed a number of more reA special thanks from Ken Bradley to the following: cent strong players and volunteers. “The most interesting parts (of the book) were the stories of the players in different eras who won many local titles and/or became provincial champions such as Fred and Hugh Fletcher in the 1930’s, Boy Ashworth, Ray March and Rob Kennedy Jr. in the 1950’s, to the modern era players like Doug Craig, Erwin Doerksen, Lorie Boyle, Kelly Hicke and others.”

- Golf Saskatchewan and Sask Sport Hall of Fame committees who recognized the value of recording Saskatchewan golf history and supported efforts by funding the printing of the book. - Moose Jaw Public Library staff for their research help. - Golf Saskatchewan intern Katherine Duncombe for her excellent editing service.

Bradley noted that the most unique story was the cross country golf challenge from Portage la Prairie to Winnipeg in 1928 between Hugh Fletcher and Joe Land.

The book may be purchased for $20 per copy (plus shipping if required) from: Golf Saskatchewan, Hillcrest Golf Club, Lynbrook Golf Club, and from Ken Bradley.
