PGA TOUR DeLaet seeing green Weyburn product has three straight top-20 finishes and over $500 thousand dollars in earnings.

Graham DeLaet is making a habit out of finishing inside the top 20 on the PGA tour. The Weyburn product had a stretch of 3 straight top-20 finishes in March and has earned over $500 thousand. This season, DeLaet has only two missed cuts along with five finishes of 21st or better. The question on everyone’s mind is when will DeLaet get the monkey off his back and earn his first career PGA Tour win? If he keeps playing like this it is just a matter of time. Graham at the 2012 Northern Trust Open. He finished T21 at the 2013 Northern Trust Open, February 14-17, 2013.

COVER STORY DEEP FREEZE GOLF COURSES IN SASKATCHEWAN REMAIN COVERED IN SNOW As we close the doors each year on the month of March, we usually open the doors of, at least, a few golf courses in the province. Not this year.

Last year at this time golfers were hitting the links at courses across the province as the snow was almost completely gone. This time around, aside from the club house, you wouldn’t even know that a golf course exists under the several feet of snow that cover the ground. We decided to head out and give you a look at what it looks like now and compare it with this time last year. Here are some pictures that we took at the Wildwood Golf Course in Saskatoon and some from Wildwood’s opening day in 2012 which was March 28th.

Above: Cross-country skiing is the only things happening on the golf course at the moment. Right: Golf Saskatchewan’s Darren Dupont is waist deep in snow on the Wildwood practise putting green. Bottom: A look at the 18th hole at the Wildwood Golf Course.

GOLF SASKATCHEWAN ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING COMING IN APRIL The 2013 Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday, April 13th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Royal Regina Golf Club. The AGM will feature reports from the various operational committees, review Golf Saskatchewan’s current financial position and touch on some of the highlights coming up for the 2013 golf season. Each club is allowed to have two voting delegates and may send additional non-voting delegates if interested. We encourage all member clubs to attend the AGM to contribute to decisions that affect Golf Saskatchewan and its future. Here are 8 (light hearted) reasons why you should attend the Golf Saskatchewan AGM: • To good-naturedly debate about how Graham DeLaet (and other PGA golfers) will finish the season • As a provincial sport organization, its operating budget is decided by its Board of Directors. By attending the AGM, you provide your Board of Directors with feedback on how funds should be distributed • Only an estimated 66% of Saskatchewan residents turned out to vote in the 2011 Provincial Election. Be more hip than 34% of the population by making your voice heard. • There’s a free lunch involved • There are worse ways to spend your Saturday than with other golf enthusiasts excited about golf season • Attending the AGM provides you with the ability to show your support in the projects Golf Saskatchewan is currently completing • Want to make some noise? Attend! • To feel like we really are over the deep freeze and snow and hurtling towards green fairways The Delegate Registration Form is located on the Golf Saskatchewan homepage. Submit your Delegate Registration Form to Lara Schroeder, Manager of Programs & Member Services through email (lschroeder@golfsaskatchewan.org) or fax (306-975-0840) by April 10th. There are five board positions up for election this year. Golf Saskatchewan follows a governance modal, which means that its Board of Directors are responsible for helping to frame and guide the overall values, vision and mission of the Association and assist in the formulation, establishment and execution of strategic plans, goals and the annual budget. Each Board of Director term is three years in length and the Board of Directors meet by telephone and in person several times a year. If you are not sure about getting involved with Golf Saskatchewan as a volunteer, then here are 8 reasons why volunteering with Golf Saskatchewan is a great idea! • • • • • • • •

Learn more about the sport of golf from a different perspective Meet and work with other golf enthusiasts Share my knowledge and skills and give back to the community Give back and contribute to other people’s enjoyment of golf A chance to work on or develop new skills Be part of something! Feel good and self-fulfilled and experience spiritual and emotional growth Get out and enjoy the outdoors!

The Board of Director Nomination Form is located on the Golf Saskatchewan homepage. Submit your nomination form to Richard Smith, Nominating Committee Chair (Richard.smith@sasktel.net) by April 8th. We look forward to seeing you at the AGM!

SOCIAL MEDIA HOOK-UP We asked Saskatchewan’s golfers where you thought the first round of golf would of 2013 would be played in the province and we posted some of the results in last month’s edition of ON PAR. Well, as it turns out, we still do not know where the first round of golf will be played and you still have a chance to tell us! Send us a tweet to @GolfSK and let us know where you think the first round of golf will be played and you could win a prize pack from Golf Saskatchewan. Be sure to get social and send us a picture of you playing golf as soon as this darn snow melts and we can get on the links. We are getting social on Facebook and so are you! Golf Saskatchewan has been asking to see who has the itch to get out and golf. Well, as it turns out, you do! We have received videos of Saskatchewan’s golfers teeing it up in the snow as they get impatient for the season to start. It all started with Golf Saskatchewan’s Executive Director Brian Lee. You can check out the videos on our Facebook page and post your own at Facebook.com/GolfSaskatchewan.

GOLF SASKATCHEWAN PINS NOW AVAILABLE Did you know that you can order pins from Golf Saskatchewan to provide recognition to your members? Last year, Golf Saskatchewan made the first motions to update our pin collection since rebranding our name and logo by ordering a new ‘Hole in One’ pin, ‘Chip In’ pin, and ‘Golf Saskatchewan’ pin. This year we are expanding our collection by ordering a new ‘Most Improved’ pin and ‘Break’ pins. Break Pins, available in Break 100, 90, 80, 60, and 50, may be awarded by the Club to players who, for the very first time on any Golf Canada rated course, break 100, 90, or 80 on an 18-hole score or those who break 60 or 50 on a 9-hole score. Hole in One Pins are awarded to any Golf Saskatchewan member for a hole in one scored on any Golf Canada rated course. Members who achieve this only have to register for Golf Saskatchewan’s Hole in One Club and will also receive a commemorative certificate for their achievement. The Eagle, Birdie, or Chip In Pins may be awarded by the Club to any player who, for the very first time on any Golf Canada rated course, achieves an Eagle, Birdie, or Chips in on a hole. These pins are great for new or junior golfers to recognize their progress. The Net Pin is awarded to low net score of the complete Club Championship. If the low net is also the low gross winner, she is entitled to this pin. Two Golf Canada awards are given annually to each Club in each of the regular and business ladies sections. The Net Pin and Pin Round pins are only available to women. Pins are $5 each and are a great way to recognize the progress and achievements of your members. For more information, please consult the ‘Online Store’ page on the Golf Saskatchewan website to view the complete selection of pins and find the order form or contact Lara Schroeder, Manager of Programs & Member Services.
