JESSE GIBSON WINS AFLAC/COUGAR INVITATIOINAL CelebraƟng his 21st birthday, Saskatoon’s Jesse Gibson won the Aflac/Cougar InvitaƟonal by one stroke. (with files and quotes from the Ledger-Enquirer) One couldn’t imagine a better way for a young golfer to celebrate his birthday than the way Saskatoon’s Jesse Gibson did earlier this month. Gibson, a sophomore at Columbus State, finished off an impressive three days by firing a 1-under 70 to win the Aflac/Cougar Invitational at the Country Club of Columbus. To top it off, the final round was also Gibson’s 21st birthday. The young golfer, who transferred from the University of Texas at Arlington, recored three straight rounds of 70 to win the tournament by just a single stroke. Gibson was near the top of the leaderboard earlier in the season when he finished tied for third in the Columbus Cougars opening event at the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate. Although he was dissappointed that the Cougars lost the team title, Gibson was exited to pick up his first win. “This was really huge for me though, I felt really good all tournament,” said Gibson to Ledger Enquirer reporter Kevin Price. Gibson’s coach, who happens to share the same birthday, was excited as well. “I’m so excited for him because in his first event of the season he had a shot to win and he didn’t finish it off. Then to come home and win at your home event is particularly special.” In July, Gibson finished tied for second at the Saskatchewan Amateur Men’s Championship held at Deer Park Municipal Golf Course in Yorkton. He fired rounds of 69-69-72-70 to finish at -8 and one shot back of winner Tyler Frank. The year before, Gibson finished

tied for eighth at the Saskatchewan Amateur Men’s Championship at The Legends in Warman. Should he enter, Gibson’s strong play will make him a top contender at the 2013 Saskatchewan Amateur Men’s Championship. Since his win, Gibson has had finishes of tied 31st at the Indian Bayou Classic in Destin, Florida and tied seventh at the TVA Credit Union Classic in Killen, Alabama. His team has been consistently good all season, never finishing worse than third, but still looking for their first win. The Columbus State University Cougars will close out the fall season in Orlando, Florida at the Rollins Invitational Octover 29-30. They will play two rounds on Monday with the third round taking place on the Tuesday.

“I would say there’s no way you could find nine better holes in Saskatchewan.” -designer Greg Murphy

Greg Murphy, course designer, tells Gilchrist about the course. “I have a bit of a bias,” he said with a laugh. “But it is good.” “ There are lots of beyond the hole views and charms. I would say there’s no way you could find nine better holes in Saskatchewan.” The course opened for play in July 1998 and remains a great destination place to play golf in Saskatchewan.

SASKATCHEWAN HARD AT WORK AHEAD OF 2013 CANADA GAMES The golf season may be over but some players are s ll hard at work trying to improve their games during the winter. For some in Saskatchewan, offseason training is crucial as they compete for a spot on Saskatchewan’s team that will compete at the upcoming 2013 Canada Games. “It’s good to stay ac ve,” said Phil Grosse, Manager of Player Development with Golf Saskatchewan. “(Today) great golfers are also great athletes. There is more to the game than just your swing, and golfers need to put in the me away from the course if they want to improve and get to the next level.”

Players on the Canada Games developmental team work with Bruce Craven.

Golf Saskatchewan, has teamed up with the Saskatchewan Sports and Medicine Science Council to provide services to players that are on the Canada Games Developmental Squad. Their first mee ng took place October 14th at Bruce Craven Sport Services in Saskatoon. The par cipant’s bodies were screened and from the informaon Bruce and his teams collected, programs were put together for each par cipant to maximize their range of mo on, posture, balance and more. A er the par cipants met with Bruce, they had the opportunity to meet with a nutri onist. The parcipants learned about various food groups, different forms of consuming meals on a daily basis, prior to and event and during an event. The next mee ng will take place in late November where the par cipants will meet with Bruce’s team as well as a sports psychologist Ralph Schoenfeld. “It’s an excellent opportunity to enhance their abili es in other areas that contribute to being a successful golfer,” said Grosse.

Strength, flexibility, and range of mo on, sport psychology, and nutri on, are all areas that can enhance a players ability to reach their full poten al.” To learn more about off season training opportuni es contact Phil Grosse with Golf Saskatchewan or visit h p://www.smscs.ca/.
