Hi! I am so glad to know you’re interested in my home region. My name is Thea Holmqvist and I am responsible for this brochure that is packed with information about what our members have to offer in Gold of Lapland, which, by the way, is the same size as Belgium. There are many of us and what we all have in common is a deep love and respect for our natural surroundings, the flora and fauna, the region’s colourful history and its people who bring it to life. Oh, and don’t forget the food! No matter where your visit takes you, everything you need to make it special will be found right on your doorstep.

I do hope that my stories and photos give an insight into the pride and passion we feel for our home. It is easy to become blasé and overlook the beauty of the moonlit snowy landscapes or fail to hear the wild rush of the rapids. You might have even stopped listening to the old anecdotes. So, if you were born here, take it from someone who was, moved away and then came back - one day you will realise that this region is part of you, it’s in your blood.

Gold of Lapland is a co-operative founded in 2005 as a destination organisation for the development of the tourism sector in Lycksele, Malå, Norsjö, Robertsfors, Skellefteå, Sorsele, Vindeln and Arvidsjaur. It also initiates and runs projects.

Start to tick off your bucket list Seated on a cosy reindeer skin, time to lean back and experience the rush of dashing through a crisp winter landscape on a sled pulled by a pack of energetic Siberian huskies.

It was a fresh -27° when the Italian couple Collani Massimo and Zanti Silvana took their places. On the sled in front of them sat Sophia Fragapane from the UK and Canadian brother and sister Viktoria and Sebastian Moes. Everyone was huddled together so closely it was hard to make out where one cold-combatting coat finished and another started. Heads were covered as were, in part, faces with only the tips of pink noses, and eyes glittering with anticipation, visible.

It is the dream of being pulled through a winter landscape on a dog sled that brings visitors from all over the world to Donald Eriksson and his daughter Tess, two of the three-strong

family team behind Aurora Borealis Adventures.

For this trip, 22 of the kennel’s 50 dogs had been chosen and their excited barks and howls echoed across the landscape.

The cacophony continued as they were hitched to the sled but as soon as they were off and running, all that could be heard was the pattering of soft paws on snow.

The journey lasted 75 minutes but for those on the sled it was as though time itself had frozen, the snow-clad landscape, resembling scenes from a fantasy film, instilling them with a powerful sense of awe.

A splashing adventure As guests of Forsknäckarna, your adventure begins in the village of Ekorrsele. Here, surrounded by flowing waters, is where you really get away from it all, leaving the 21st century behind for electricity-free Viking inspired timber longhouses, which are also popular venues for conferences with a difference and parties.

“Keeping close to nature and the Vindelälven river rapids are at the heart of what we do,” says Forsknäckarna adventure guide Patrick Edin.

The national river Vindelälven is flowing wild and free – no power stations to constrain it´s force.

The roar of the rapids can be heard from Vindelåforsen cabin village with seven modern buildings and two cabins. At the mountain lake of Bertejaure fishing camp there are five more cabins. Touchdown for adventure Lycksele Airport is located in the heart of Lapland and just 5 km from Lycksele town centre. The city has an infrastructure that includes rail, road and air, making it one of the area’s most important transport hubs.

Enjoy a colourful experience Take a Northern Lights photography course, take a light summer night’s dip in the Vindelälven river or delve into the region’s largest arts and crafts fair. Just some of Vormsele’s almost inexhaustible range of available activities.

Being based so close to the Vindelälven has proved key to the range of activities offered.

They range from ice fishing or skiing in winter (the frozen waters form the track for a 400 km race that combines the pulling power of dogs and skiers, says Grahame) to swimming and fishing in summer.

Accommodation comes in the form of a holiday home,

At Ibbes Pizzeria, visitors always find a good meal.

Farouk Sadek and his team have been dishing up pizza to hungry guests for more than a decade. Located next to Lycksele Travel Centre, this is a popular restaurant for meeting friends and filling up on good food.

Although regular pizzas are always firm favourites, a real speciality is Lappland’s very own variety, which Farouk has created featuring rocket leaves, salami and cheese encrusted edges.

“Lycksele is my home where I want to spend the rest of my days,” he says. ”I love the people and the surroundings. It is much easier to get know your customers in a smaller town.”

Snowmobiles, cars and motorbikes - pretty much anything that moves, are all gathered for one of the town’s biggest events of the year. The event, which is also crammed with family activities, a veteran car market, competitions and exhibitions, are all jam packed into a hectic few days, ending on the last Saturday of the month.

Visit the underground church In 1946, following a routine explosion, an image of Christ appeared on the rock walls of the Kristineberg Mine. Had an old local prophecy been fulfilled?

Discover the story and experience the extraordinary atmosphere.

The story of how a two metre tall image of Christ emerged from the dust of an explosion has fascinated people for decades.

Toady an ecumenical Underground Church is located just a few metres from where the original image appeared and, since its inauguration in 1990, it has attracted visitors from all over the world.

“You won’t find a similar site and tale anywhere else in the world,” promises Administrator Elisabeth Bystedth.

“We are unique.”

A replica of the now faded original image has been created in the impressive candlelit church-within-the-mine chamber, 90m underground. Adjacent is an exhibition about the mine and a café selling souvenirs.

Lunch is also available above ground from Thornégården, where all mine tours begin.

A guided tour of the church occurs on most days of the summer: on certain dates pre-booking is required.

Come as a guest – leave as a friend Personal service, fishing and snowmobile tours attract visitors from far afield to Laplandtime.

Frans Creugers and Paula Perriëns offer guests a year-round welcome to the village of Tväråträsk. Summer promises some excellent fishing from several pristine rivers, such as the Gargån, Juktån and Vindelälven. Between December and April, overalls and snowmobiles are the natural replacements for fishing rods. ”It’s by keeping groups small, no more than six people at any one time, that enables us to develop a close relationship with customers”, says Paula, adding: “They come as guests and leave as friends. Many make a return visit.”

Those who have got to know Frans and Paula well, and the area, too, are often given the opportunity to head out unaccompanied on treks or berry picking expeditions during summer and autumn.

Exciting water fun for all ages Water jets, wave machine, children’s pool and volleyball. Ansia Badpark is a watery paradise for the whole family.

Summer, sun and playing around in the pool. Even the most cowardly bather won’t be able to resist our sauna and 25° water. Close to both nature and fun With its separate riverside location that is also at the heart of a host of facilities, the 5-star Ansia resort is a wonderful venue for family holidays, trips with friends or conferences.

Situated next to the main E12 highway (known as the Blue route) and the Umeälven river, the resort is also a stone’s throw from a nine-hole golf course, the Ansia water park and, a little further off, the zoo. It is also right at the centre of a network of beautiful walking trails.

Gammplatsen - nature and culture in perfect harmony Gammplatsen, Lycksele’s cradle, is located on a peninsula in the River Umeälven. The scenic area has been a popular gathering place in southern Lapland for centuries.

Today the cottages, huts, church and exhibits provide an insight into how people used to live. Traces of the 17th century church town are still visible. The forestry museum is open all year round and contains collections of unique Sami objects and the breathtaking development within the forestry sector. Croft plants thrive in ­Lapland’s cultural botanical garden and more than 400 year old pine trees still grow in Gammplatsen’s magical nature reserve.

Younger visitors can enjoy the old-fashioned shop, children’s play corner, pedal tractors, or have a go at the controls of a crane simulator. Up close with nordic animals It’s Thursday. The powerful Storm Ylva is buffeting the far north and Lycksele is witnessing almost brutal levels of snowfall and extreme gusts of wind. But it makes no difference here.

The animals at Sweden’s northernmost zoo still have to be looked after, fed and counted.

Fate and the work schedule have placed Maj-Britt Lundqvist in Ylva’s path. But several decades-worth of work experience have prepared her for such punishing conditions and she guides the vehicle up the slippery snow-covered slopes as the windscreen wipers work frantically to provide a little extra sight. Today’s feeding routine, featuring bales of hay, cans of water and buckets of crushed meat, will be unusually demanding.

Fortunately, the hours spent over the course of a year working in snowstorms are few.

Not that it matters much; our warden from the coastal village of Lövånger regards her role, a

childhood dream, as being the “the best job in the world”; one she has held since the 1980s.

“ Despite having to follow many routines it never gets boring for our tasks are extremely varied,” says Maj-Britt. “ The seasons also bring their own variations. Spring is when it, literally, comes alive as many of our animals produce new offspring.

During summer the zoo is packed with visitors so we need to look after them too. We organise guided feeding tours and open up the children’s zoo. In winter the snow makes the landscape magical and the year rounds off with the Christmas Park in December,” Maj-Britt continues.

After 30 years at Lycksele Djurpark zoo, Maj-Britt has developed a close relationship with the animals, particularly her favourites: Totta, a 22 yearold grey seal, and Miessi, a reindeer calf who lost her mother at birth and found a new one in Maj-Britt.

“She’s my little baby,” says MajBritt as she, having first thawed the gate lock using a gas burner,

Once all the cloven-hoofed animals have been taken care of, it’s time for lunch. Then it is the predators’ turn. Wolverines, polar foxes, red foxes, and wolves. Even a shy lynx can be glimpsed through the whirling snowflakes. All eagerly await their portions of crushed meat.

At the top of the hill the snow lies undisturbed. This is where the bears live and they went into hibernation a few weeks earlier.

The hat museum in Glommersträsk is the only one of its kind in Sweden and attracts visitors from around the world, eager to see over 250 women’s hats, which are on elegant display along with several men’s hats. There is also the opportunity to try some on. ”Most of the collection dates from the 1930s to the 1960s. We also have some examples from the 1980s,” reveals the museum’s joint owner Mats Klockljung.

Other nostalgic experiences at the museum include a ladies hairdresser’s, featuring items from the 1930s, and an extensive collection of toys from the 1950s to the present day.

We’re all best friends The newly fallen snow dampens the sound of 56 energetic paws (closely followed by two sleds) pounding across it. Driving the leading sled is Morgan Liljemark who, with his wife, Lina, runs Wild Lapland. This outdoor adventure company uses the forest as its office, the wide lake as its arena and the 51 dedicated Alaskan huskies as the workforce.

It is Wednesday, just past 10 o’clock. Beside Lake Ruskträsket the air, chilled to -17°C, stings the cheeks and the sun seems to balance on the horizon.

It always does in January when, for a few minutes, its rays can be easily discerned moving across the landscape.

The silhouettes of two dog sleds can be picked out in the distant mist. For Morgan, his voluntary Dutch helper Kitty and the 14 dogs, the trip is the high point of the day.

“The dogs are our best friends and we want to share this relationship with our visitors,” he says. “That is why we cater mostly for small groups because it allows people to really participate in everything we do, such as helping to attach the dogs to the sled at the start as well as gliding through the snowy landscape.”

Lina adds: “The most important thing for us is that the guest gets a great experience. We want to maintain the personal and genu-

ine touch and really have good conversations with them. Not just say hello!”

That personal attention is maintained and remains paramount, no matter whether it’s a short day trip or longer overnight tour into the wilderness.

Guests regularly thank them at the end of a trip but Morgan says they should be thanking guests. “Without them we would not be able to do what we love doing most,” he grins. “It’s nice to give something back.”

The group has stopped for a break. Not to give the dogs a rest, mind you, they can run many more miles. It is this writer’s fault, wanting to take in the

breathtaking surroundings. The dogs look back, irritated and clearly wondering what is holding them up.

Morgan again. “It is not about the speed or exhilaration. It is about seeing the dogs doing what they long for more than anything - to run. And to be able to do it in this fantastic environment.”

The sled is off again and the silhouettes are soon swallowed up by the thick forest. Within a couple of months the ice will be replaced by water. But Wild Lapland will be ready. For Morgan and Lina, its not only about sleds but also about canoeing, hunting, walking and fishing.

Back in 1990, Bastuträsk’s old school, with its beautiful church hall, was about to be demolished when a local association was formed and stepped in to save it.

Also run as a military hospital during the Second World War, this historic building is now a unique and popular tourist destination.

“Our Home Front museum and the church hall have all been restored to as they were in the 1940s and ’50s and there is also a period café and shop,” says Lilly Karlsson.

Refreshments in an old mill Tasty homemade eco-friendly food served in a renovated old mill have earned Skråmträsk Kvarn a place in the prestigious restaurants and cafés White Guide.

You’ll be in for a surprise when you visit the whitewashed stone mill in Skråmträsk. This carefully preserved building also houses a charming café.

Owner Asta Hellgren explains: “We serve simple meals, but everything is organic and is prepared and baked on the premises. We try hard to develop our own recipes and to make them as tasty as possible” During summer, the old building is centre stage for a number of cultural events including concerts, theatre performances and exhibitions. Its location away from busy urban centres also makes it a popular venue for business conferences.

Feel the calm of the wilderness As soon as Börje Stenlund enters the paddock he is surrounded by reindeer.

They have seen what he has brought with him - lichen.

And for reindeers that means party time! For this Släppträsk man, these moments in the paddock are a welcome part of the daily grind. For visitors, a visit to Börje’s wilderness camp is often a dream come true.

Börje and his wife, Lena, founded the company in 2006 and today they welcome guests from all over the world.

“During winter, there is much to see and do and, in summer, fishing is the main attraction,” says Börje. “My job is very easy because everyone who visits us really wants to be here.”

He casts a watchful eye over the munching reindeer before leaving the paddock and heading off for the large Sami tent a few miles away.

A lot of snow has fallen there and he needs to clear enough so guests can use the sauna and outdoor bathtub.

“This is where our guests really get a feel for the wilderness,” Börje adds, “They can try their hand at throwing a lasso, take a dip in the frozen lake, drive snowmobiles and just generally enjoy the winter landscape. Coffee and meals are prepared over an open fire and conversations are held in the shimmering light of candles.
