NORSJÖBYGDEN EXCURSION

A GUIDE TO HIKING TRAILS, REST AREAS & BEACHES

Welcome to take a break in Norsjöbygden!

Do you want to discover something new, entertain restless children or are you simply tired of sitting at home? Then we have good news. Here in the area there are lots of great spots that are perfect for a swim, preparing coffee over an open fire or just a moment of peace and quiet.

We kindly ask you to remember that these places are run on a voluntary basis, so make sure you leave them tidy! If you have the opportunity, why not give a donation to the association that looks after the place. That way we might get to keep these lovely gems for a while longer!

Local guide

The local guide to Norsjö focuses on local small-scale producers and tourism operators. This guide will hopefully make it easier for you as a local resident, service provider or guest to learn something new and quickly find information and contact-details. Feel free to download the guide! The guide is available in swedish, english and german.

Freedom to roam

Sustainability guide

Sweden has no Eiffel Towers. No Niagara Falls or Big Bens. Not even a little Sphinx. Sweden has something else – the freedom to roam. This is our monument. The freedom to roam is the principle, protected by the law, that gives all people the right to roam free in nature, all completely free of charge. The only thing you have to pay, is respect for nature, people and the animals living there (visitsweden.com 2022).

Our place on earth is amazing. We love it here and we hope that you will too. We would like it to stay great for a long time to come and for that to be, we all have to do what we can to preserve it. in this guide you’ll find knowledge, and inspiration on how to better take care of places that you visit .

By doing the best you can for people, animals and nature, you contribute to an even better place for all of us!

This guide was made in 2022 as a part of the project Synas Tillsammans. The aim of this guide is to make nature more accessible and to make people aware of all the great little gems we have have here in Norsjö. The information in this guide is partly based off of an inventory made by Norsjö Kommun in 2019 and things may have changed since then.

Check list

Are you allowed to light a fire?

In the spring and summer, the lighting of fires or grilling in forests and other outdoor areas is sometimes prohibited. You must therefore always find out what rules apply before you light a fire. The reason for the fire ban is to prevent forest fires. You can find information

Remember to bring firewood!

It is forbidden to cut down trees and branches, so remember to bring your own firewood if

Mosquitos.....

Swedish mosquitos are not dangerous but v e r y annoying. Bring mosquito repellent with you, stay away from bogs and find a nice rest area where there is a bit of wind.

Safety first!

Needless to say, but even here in the north of Sweden, the sun can cause a lot of damage. Make sure to bring SPF!

Need a spare?

Especially during the winter, spare clothing is a necessity. Gloves and socks get wet and the fun outing is not so fun anymore. If you can, bring extras!

NORSJÖ BEACH

Along Rislidenvägen, just on the outskirts of Norsjö is this popular swimming area. The water is shallow, with a sandy bottom and there are plenty of grassy areas to play on. Next to the swimming area, we were able to install a brand new barbecue area in the summer of 2021 thanks to the Mervärde Norsjö initiative. Everyone who has shopped at the affiliated Mervärde companies has contributed to paying for this barbecue area!

STOR-STEN

Outside Kvarnåsen there is a remarkably large stone that has fascinated visitors from all over Sweden. In 2022, the area was restored and now has a new barbecue area with a shelter.

The large stone has likely ended up in this place due to the thick layer of ice that once covered the area. Old tales, however tells the story about giants carrying the stone, placing it here and cutting it in half. You can read more, both factual and fictional, about the stone once you are there.

VAJSJÖN

Nature reserve

Vajsjön nature reserve is well worth a visit. A large number of bird species nest here and can be observed from the lookout tower. The area also has a toilet, a great barbecue area and a number of beautiful log buildings. At the entrance to the reserve you will find the Vajsjö trail head, which leads you around the entire reserve. At a leisurely pace, it is a hike of about 3.5 hours. Take a break at one of the nice rest areas along the way.

Wintertime, especially february through april, is a sacred time of year for most locals. The sun has returned and the temperature is mild enough to spend a couple of hours outdoors. Many seek to spend time on a frozen lake, ice fishing or just relaxing with hot coffee or chocolate. Others may go for a more adrenaline prone activity like skiing or sledding. Either way, Norsjöbygden has something to offer all of us. The key to a happy time outdoors this time of year is many layers of clothing and loads of FIKA .

ICE FISHING

Equipment can be borrowed at Rännuddens Camping. Make sure to check if a fishing license is needed.

SLEDDING HILLS

There is always a place to go sledding, just ask a local and they’ll let you know where the clos est place is. Among the most popular is Mollwings backe, close to Vajsjöns nature reserve and Synvillan in Bastuträsk.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

Floodlit trails can be found in the proximity of Norsjö Arena, Kvarnåsen, Åmliden near Källan hotell, Svansele, Norsjövallen, Båtfors, Bjurträsk and Bastuträsk. Read more about our floodlit trails on Norsjö Kommuns’ website

DOWNHILL SKIING

Our local ski slope Solia, is run by volounteers. It is small but makes for a good daytrip. They have a limited selection of equipment to borrow. More information is available on their Facebook page!

Norakammen

Rågmjölsvägen

One of Norsjöbygdens most spectacular hiking trails is Norakammen. It runs along the ledges created by the thick ice that once covered the area. We recommend starting in Inre Långträsket. Follow orange markings.

Rågmjölsvägen, also known as “the old road” was used for transporting goods to and from the harbour in Skellefteå for decades before modern roads was made. The trail between Bastuträsk and Malå was restored in 2022 and makes for a good hiking experience.

Kyrkstigen

The Church Trail

Before Norsjöbygden got its’ own church in 1811, the people of Norsjö were expected to attend mass in Skellefteå at least twice a year, hence the name. The trail is partly restored but has some challenging bits here and there. Follow orange markings.
