BI-FOLDING DOORS //

Alumina: Not just a bi-folding door… Launched in April 2016, the Alumina door range from Liniar took the industry by storm. A fully aluminium door created by an industry-leading PVCu systems company that not only matched the sculptured design of its windows, but also provided superb thermal efficiency, exceptional security, low U-values and the ability to be foiled for a warm-touch exterior. Liniar customers around the UK are fabricating the Alumina system, with the reassurance of delivery from a stable UK supply chain.

Bi-folds, French and Residential doors Alumina is best known for bifolding doors. Each sash can be manufactured up to 2.5 metres high for stunning expanses of glass spanning up to 7 panes in width. A choice of five thresholds including a Part M compliant low threshold with no trench excavation required makes the Alumina bi-fold ideal for family living. The sleek, flush design of Alumina lends itself perfectly to French doors too. Paired with timber-alternative, flush sash windows such as the Resurgence range, a foiled set of Alumina French doors provides the ideal complement for a fully flush installation. For an entrance door with a difference, Alumina can also be made into residential doors. A huge choice 6 | September 2021

of foiled or RAL powder-coated finishes result in a versatile product that offers a real alternative to composite or PVCu residential doors. All Alumina doors offer superb thermal efficiency, with U-values as low as 1.3 W/m²K thanks to a polyamide thermal lock – and of course they’re tested to the highest security standards, with PAS24 and Secured By Design compatibility.

The evolution of Alumina Since its initial launch, the Alumina range has benefited from constant enhancements and updates from Liniar’s Design and Development team. Alumina was the first aluminium door to include a flexible bead for glazing – meaning no more wedge gaskets (or sore thumbs for installers!) and up to three times faster fitting than other aluminium bi-folding doors. More recently, frame connectors enable Alumina bi-folds to span

up to 8.5 metres wide – ideal both for commercial usage and for homeowners looking for more expansive openings to blend indoor and outdoor living areas. This year, a brand new 40mm addon head vent was launched to provide properties featuring deep plaster lines a sleek appearance with concealed ventilation. The airflow in the optional built-in trickle vent has been fully tested and the component can be fully foiled to match the rest of the Alumina door for a seamless, perfect finish.

What’s ahead? Development of the Alumina range is far from finished – a radical new addition is in the pipeline and will be announced in the near future. We can’t say too much yet, but watch out for a new design style that homeowners are going to love! Learn more about Liniar’s Alumina flush aluminium door range by visiting www.alumina.liniar.co.uk.

DOCUMENT L //

Future Homes Survey There has been quite a bit of speculation in the press recently with regard to the impending changes to Document L and how it will affect the Industry. The Council for Aluminium in Building has been active asking its members what it means for them and how they will cope with the substantial shift towards more thermally efficient systems. Since the last change to window U-values in Approved Document L1A back in 2014, little has changed, but, that is all set to change with the introduction of the Government Future Homes Standard Consultation. The CAB team have been working with members to determine what these changes will mean for the Industry and how practicable they are to achieve and whilst the legislation is primarily for dwellings, it is likely that commercial buildings will closely follow the incoming regulations.

Generic new building

10 | September 2021

Phil Slinger - CAB Chief Executive

It is likely that the updated Approved Document Part L will be finalised and released at the end of 2021 to be introduced into legislation early in 2022, this will likely mean the introduction of window systems having to meet a lower U-value of 1.2 and the introduction of triple glazing. Following this introduction, it is likely that Approved Document Part L will be further revised in 2025 taking window U-values down even further to 0.8. The changes are the result of the Government mission to achieving net zero carbon by 2050 and ensuring that new homes are built to be “zero carbon ready” as the National Electricity Grid decarbonises. The feedback from members clearly shows that in both the growth markets of commercial and residential work across

DOCUMENT L // specification in high rise apartments and in high end residential applications. While some 25% of respondents felt that the proposed changes to Part L did not present any major issues, with suitable products already available, some 50% do see a challenge, either large or small, requiring investment in new product development. Issues highlighted included the challenges of maintaining cost competitiveness with other materials and education of the supply chain. The ability of sliding/bi-folding doors to meet the U-values proposed was of particular concern. The feedback reflects that some of the larger systems companies, especially those who operate in Europe, already have systems suitable for Passivhaus applications, it is the smaller systems companies who have a few well respected systems, that will need investment to meet these future needs. Until now the Passivhaus market in the UK has been very small and development to meet the requirements has not be justifiable for these companies. The survey confirms that costs will become an issue as the industry moves towards triple glazing, wider and heavier framing systems with hardware to match. Whilst hardware manufacturers have no major concerns with the changes, there is concern from members that fabricators and installers will need to be educated in new methods of construction and installation techniques to ensure compliance. Members also comment that such is the shift in thermal performance, 12 | September 2021

many of the systems used today, will simply fall into obsolescence as they will not meet the levels of thermal performance required. Members are also concerned that doors will be particularly difficult to design to meet the new legislation and this may see large sliding doors with slim frames increasingly being specified over the more popular sliding folding systems. The consultation with members has instigated the launch a new Working Group of the CAB Technical Committee to focus on Part L (and Part F). If you are a member of CAB and wish to join the working group please contact CAB, if you are not yet a member please consider joining the Association and have your say about the future of fenestration in the UK. The Association continually supports the wider industry with technical support across the aluminium fenestration supply chain and staff are on hand at the CAB offices to answer any questions. ENGINEERING //

“When I grow up, I’d like to design door and window systems” – was the statement no child ever said to their careers advisor. Engineering is a broad term and sticking your neck out you could say it’s a career that young people usually get involved in from an early fascination with vehicles. Bikes, cars, planes, trains and the plethora of parts and systems that make them work. Whether right or wrong about the primary drivers one thing is certain Brunel didn’t lie awake at night dreaming of windows and doors.

18 | September 2021

// ENGINEERING

Despite this it is a very real fact that everything around us in the world has been designed and engineered somewhere along the line. All the products you see in the pages of this magazine are only in existence because

someone out there thought of them, then had the opportunity to commit those thoughts to paper and finally someone else financed them to manufacture. The lack of glamour in fenestration products means it is hard to attract real engineering talent into the industry which Made for Trade have learned and certainly know a thing or two about as the business

is actually run by qualified Mechanical Engineers as we learn more from MFT’s Chris Wann. “My background is all Oil & Gas machinery design, which I did for about 8 years. Over that time my employer realised I could also communicate with other human beings (a trait many engineers lack) and so I was moved into concept sales and business development which gave me a real taste for business. Coming into a completely different industry with MFT, which at the time I was worried was career suicide has actually been a massive breath of fresh air. This realisation is something I try and push to all the young engineers I meet as part of our recruitment efforts” Chris continues “most of these sexy industries, like automotive, O&G and aerospace only offer an opportunity to look at a really small part of the overall system, or they force you to design things that have been seen and importantly proven before, they don’t like risk. Here at MFT we like to throw the rule book out of the window and start projects, where possible, from September 2021 | 19

ENGINEERING // first principles pushing the industry forward.” The Korniche line of products are exactly what MFT claim to be the new first principal designs that are pushing the envelope and have certainly turned things on their heads with the Lantern roof. It was the fist product on the market that wasn’t just a converted conservatory roof and its only now, some 4 years later that companies are starting to bring out similar sorts of things. For those of you that don’t know about the Korniche lantern it was the first in house designed product from the trade fabricator and it threw the conservatory roof rule book entirely out of the building. It made installation a doddle for even the most inexperienced fitter, delivered to site precision cut with no requirements to do anything other than assemble the simple kit with the provided hex tool. Also, the innovation of the glazing retainer design meant it can be glazed in under a minute which MFT demonstrated to astounded audiences at trade days and trade shows across the UK and Europe. Rumor has it that a couple of industry journalists managed to build one in front of a live audience in under 10 mins. Impressive stuff! To keep creativity and design at the forefront of MFT’s business they have now built up a team of 8 engineers working from 20 | September 2021

// ENGINEERING a dedicated research and development office at their Wynyard headquarters. They have some pretty impressive facilities that would be more at home in a full-blown test house. The team works using SolidWorks 3D CAD and analysis software and have 3D printing and workshop facilities to develop prototype designs. 2021’s investment also went into impact, PAS24, and weather testing rigs to pre-test new bi-fold parts way before any official testing took place.

of it. With some interesting patents on proprietary features of their up-coming Korniche bi-folding door which could clearly be applied to other products we can’t wait to see what’s next off the Made for Trade drawing board!

Ashley Gaunt, Technical Director commented “Pre-testing all our designs in house cuts out a lot of the to-ing and froing from our chosen accreditation testing partners saving us a considerable amount of time and cost. Its also great for all the engineers to be able to test their designs themselves as it provides insight into what does and doesn’t work and why which is invaluable for trying out innovative new designs.” Its refreshing to see a company in the industry that are taking design and development this seriously and that their products are making a real success story

CURTAIN WALLING //

Specifying success with

Curtain Walling Façades have the ability to transform how we see architectural spaces and, in recent decades, glazed curtain walling systems have become increasingly popular – on commercial and residential buildings alike. Enclosing the envelope of the building, there are two main types of curtain walling: stick and unitised façades. These can be adapted from their standard design to create bespoke features which are engineered to emphasise geometry or a particular aesthetic appearance. As a result, curtain wall systems equip architects with the freedom to create an aesthetically led façade which meets the specific performance requirements of the building.

Performance Spanning multiple floors and covering a large surface of the building, curtain wall forms a significant part of the envelope. As such, systems can directly impact key performance considerations, including water tightness and thermal characteristics, daylighting, ventilation regimes and acoustics. Another fundamental part in selecting the correct curtain wall is the accommodation of building movement. The taller a building gets, the more movement can be expected, creating the potential for a range of building

“Although some types of movement are more typical outside the UK, it is important for every aspect of the building envelope to be designed to accommodate such movements.” 22 | September 2021

movements such as windsway, inter-storey drift, differential slab deflections, settlement, creep and even seismic loads. Although some types of movement are more typical outside the UK, it is important for every aspect of the building envelope to be designed to accommodate such movements. Acoustics is another area where curtain wall systems have a part to play. As urban areas become increasingly populated, controlling noise levels within a building increases comfort for occupants. Curtain walling can reduce noise concerns such as flanking sound transmission, which is particularly relevant for multipleoccupancy buildings. Accommodating the large glass thicknesses and glass weights associated with acoustic glazing, alongside the inclusion of profiles that stop direct

// CURTAIN WALLING

“Accommodating the large glass thicknesses and glass weights associated with acoustic glazing, alongside the inclusion of profiles that stop direct transmission, Reynaers curtain wall can directly support acoustic performance.”

transmission, Reynaers curtain wall can directly support acoustic performance. The systems’ test data speaks for itself, with each different curtain wall type offering varying levels of performance, depending on characteristics like profile design, gaskets and openings. CW 50, for example – the leading curtain wall system from Reynaers – offers all-round performance having passed CWCT Sequence B testing, providing independent accreditation. Different technical variants can also accommodate specific fire resistance requirements where needed.

Elevating aesthetics While the technical performance of curtain walling is a primary consideration for those specifying systems, there

is one clear benefit to including them in a building’s design – aesthetics. As a fast and cost-effective way of introducing large volumes of glazing into a building, these systems hold the potential to define a building’s appearance. For occupants, the benefits are clear to see. Large and often full height windows flood rooms with natural light, making spaces more comfortable, practical and modern. Alongside the positive impact this can have on wellbeing, curtain wall systems can introduce greater connections between inside and outside spaces and maximise views, further elevating the appeal of buildings for occupants. From the outside, curtain walling equips buildings with a distinctive appearance which defines their unique character. To achieve this, it is crucial for architects to specify systems which facilitate creative freedom, without compromising the performance benefits required. September 2021 | 23

CURTAIN WALLING //

Ensuring correct specification To unlock the full suite of benefits which are made possible through curtain walling, it is crucial to work closely with suppliers and collaborate with design teams from the very outset of a project. Particularly on large scale projects, such as high-rise buildings where curtain walling is most in demand, this approach ensures success. It is for this reason that Reynaers encourages direct collaboration with its partners. SUPPLY CHAIN CASE STUDY //

How increased demand for home improvements is impacting the fenestration industry Victoria Brocklesby, COO at Origin, the UK’s leading manufacturer of aluminium doors and windows, talks to us about how the rising trend for home improvements brought on by the pandemic is generating an increase in demand within the fenestration industry, and discusses what Origin is doing to support its Partners during this busy period.

26 | September 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the strangest 18-month periods in our recent history. The economic and environmental turbulence have been a lot to handle, but the world is slowly recovering. In the UK, with lockdown restrictions completely eased and people navigating their new normal, there is certainly light at the end of the tunnel. Although the pandemic brought much disruption, there have been some benefits. For those of us in the fenestration industry, people spending a significant more amount of time at home is one of those. People

// SUPPLY CHAIN CASE STUDY

are prioritising their home living, and now home offices, like never before, and we have consequently witnessed a boom in demand for home improvement projects. Some are extending their homes; others are renovating, and a good proportion are building new homes thanks to Government initiatives like the Help to Build Scheme. In fact, the latest consumer figures from TGI show that five percent of UK adults anticipate making home improvements in the next year. This equates to 2.5 million people which is a significant number of homeowners in the UK.

This is great news for those working of us in the fenestration industry, but how will the increase in demand impact valuable supply chains, and how can this best be managed?

Surge in Demand The amount of home renovations and house building taking place in the UK is creating a peak in demand, which test supply chains and their ability to continue delivering in time and in full, especially when we look wider at problems such as shipping delays that are being felt across the globe. Other major external projects, like Crossrail and

SUPPLY CHAIN CASE STUDY // HS2, are also using a considerable amount of materials, so it’s easy to see why some people are panicking. A lack of materials causes delays, and delays cost both time and money. They can result in poor cashflow, mean companies miss out on future business, and even harm a business’ reputation. All of which must be avoided at all costs.

also invested in a new warehouse facility in Bicester which has allowed us to increase our capacity by 82 percent. The level of stock we can maintain means that our Partners, plus builders, installers, and housebuilders across the UK, have been able to fully rely on us to deliver on time, in full, no matter the demand.

In my opinion, it is possible to ensure that the supply chain continues to work for you, despite these challenges. In Origin’s case, we have navigated safely through a tricky period and continued to deliver for our network of Partners, with the quality of our product not being compromised in the process.

We also benefit from being a British manufacturer. Our products are manufactured at our factory in High Wycombe, and this has allowed us to maintain control over our entire operation, from sourcing and design, through to manufacturing and delivery. So, our Partners can rest assured that the products leaving our factory are of the highest standard, and they will arrive with them on the designated day by our own fleet.

So, across the Brexit, COVID and now post-COVID peak periods, how have we been able to keep our Partners happy and in stock?

Partner Support There’s an old saying in business that you must speculate to accumulate. Well, although it may sound counterintuitive to spend money during a period of economic uncertainty, we took it as an opportunity to significantly invest in our stock levels. In doing so, we worked harder than ever before to foster great relationships with our supply chain. Brexit also held us in good stead here as we were already working hard to ensure that we wouldn’t be caught out by trade regulation changes. As well as supplier relations, we

28 | September 2021

Social distancing rules meant that we did have to adapt our way of working in the warehouse, and quickly, so that the impact of the pandemic didn’t affect our ‘On Time, In full’ promise. To help us maintain our production processes, we innovated to introduce a two-shift pattern, allowing us to get back to full capacity quickly. This is something post-pandemic that we are keeping in place, as it allows us to further increase capacity, and better protect our employees in case of a positive COVID test. Plus, we have added more products to OSS, Origin’s own unique ordering and quoting system, and access this 24/7. This allows our Partners to create bespoke customer

// SUPPLY CHAIN CASE STUDY

projects in a matter of minutes at a time that suits them. They can even make changes across an entire order at the click of a button. This unique way of ordering means our Partners can spend more time building their business instead of doing paperwork.

In Conclusion Those who have managed to navigate through 18-months of uncertainty are now presented with a huge new business opportunity. For those that have struggled, there is reason to be optimistic. There is a surge in demand

across the industry, so now it the time to capitalise on it; don’t sit and watch it go by. Futureproofing your business now means you will be better prepared for anything thrown at you later down the road. Bold business decisions can set you on the path to success and having a dependable manufacturer behind you will give you the confidence boost you need to meet this demand and take your business to the next level. UK construction bounces back With the ONS revising its dip in construction output in 2020 to a fall of 14% and the CPA forecast for a growth this year of 13.7%, it seems that the UK industry continues to bounce back. On the downside, there is the shortage of materials and skilled labour followed with the inevitable rise in costs connected with these shortages.

By Phil Slinger - CAB Chief Executive

30 | September 2021

It should come as no surprise that 65% of CAB members on balance have stated increases in sales of over 5% during the last year and in the second quarter of 2021, with a record 90% of members on balance expecting sales to increase further in the next quarter. This is tempered with 15% of members stating that they have experienced a loss in sales over the last year with a further 20% stating that they have experienced the same or less than 5% increase in sales over the period. Costs have generally increased in all areas with 80% of members on net balance stating that costs have risen in the past quarter. These increases generally fall in line with the rest of the construction industry. On balance 90% of members forecast further increases with 97% of the wider construction industry bracing themselves for further price increases. Critical costs have increased across the board with wages, energy costs and fuel costs increasing, with increased raw material costs being claimed by 90% of net balance of members as being the most influential.

// CASE STUDY

CAB members are cautiously optimistic about further growth with just 47% of members forecasting that their capacity utilisation will continue to be over 90% in the next quarter. However, 50% of members see a capacity utilisation of over 90% for the year ahead. With a similar forecast increase in capacity utilisation in both the membership and the wider industry, this shows a stable optimism for the year ahead. Whilst 42% of members see the availability of materials as the major constraint on activity, 32% of members also cite demand as a likely future constraint. This suggests that possibly not all sectors are seeing a steady growth. With historic capacity utilisation of 45% of members operating at over 90% capacity over the last quarter, this is a significant increase from the 30% of members operating at over 90% capacity over the last year. The wider construction industry lags slightly behind at 36% and 26% respectively. CAB members are cautiously optimistic about further growth with just 47% of members forecasting that their capacity utilisation will continue to be over 90% in the next quarter. However, 50% of members see a capacity utilisation of over 90% for the year ahead. With a similar forecast increase in capacity utilisation in both the

membership and the wider industry, this shows a stable optimism for the year ahead. 53% on net balance of members are seeking to increase their labour force in the year ahead and 13% claimed that they had increased their workforce in the last year. These figures again closely follow the wider construction industry forecasts. 42% of members have seen increases in labour costs in the last year, with 74% on balance forecasting increases in labour costs in the year ahead. Again, these figures closely follow the wider construction industry. As a proportion of sales, 55% of members reported that none of their production is exported which matches that of the wider construction industry in the UK. Only 5% of members claimed to be exporting more than 15% of their production. The wider construction industry saw a drop of exports in the last year of 8% on net balance likely to be due to the remnants of Brexit. As would be expected, capital investment is aimed at plant and equipment with 74% of members on net balance stating that investment had been made in the past year with a further 63% on balance stating the future investment would be made in plant and equipment. Emmegi offers machine package to

get started in Decalu Emmegi and Decalu have joined forces to make it easy for fabricators to take their first steps into manufacturing in the Deceuninck aluminium system. Emmegi is offering a simple start up package of machinery which gives fabricators a simple and cost-effective route into manufacturing, backed by one of the biggest and most trusted names in the machinery market.

It is pairing an Emmegi Phantomatic CNC machining centre with a Classic Magic twin head saw to give fabricators a ‘classic combination’ of machines which maximise throughput and efficiency. Ian Latimer, Emmegi UK’s Managing Director explained: “One of the USPs of the Decalu system is the speed of fabrication, so we’re recommending one of our high speed Phantomatic machining centres with an electronic twin head saw to help fabricators make the most of that. These are proven to work well together, and we know they will give

customers years of troublefree operation.” Nigel Headford, Decalu’s Director in the UK, said that many of the manufacturing enquiries for Decalu are coming from companies who traditionally have fabricated in PVC-U and bought in their aluminium products. He added: “They can see that Decalu is essentially as quick and easy to fabricate as PVC-U and are recognising that they can make bigger margins on the aluminium side of their business if they switch to manufacturing from buying in.

“We’re focused on helping them to take that step; and working closely with Emmegi is a key part of the support we’re offering. The machines themselves have a reputation for quality and durability and they’re backed by UK based service and engineering teams who we know our customers can trust and rely on.” Emmegi has already supplied a Phantomatic M4 and Classic Magic to Decalu fabricator PRG based in Romford and a Phantomatic T3A to Glass House in Cardiff, with further installations on their way. Dawud Sandhu and Asaad Hussain from PRG commented: “We liked the fact that the Emmegi machines could match the quality and performance of the Decalu product and we felt reassured by the established partnership between the two businesses. Decalu and Emmegi staff visited us on the same day and the installation and training was really well coordinated, setting us up nicely to add aluminium to our existing PVC-U offering.” More details at: www.emmegi.com and https://bit.ly/3xEO3Ue

Door and window systems continues its productivity drive with a fifth new Kombimatec machine Door and Window Systems (DAWS), a Liverpool-based fabricator, continues to increase productivity in response to customer demand, with the recent installation of its fifth new Kombimatec machine in 18 months – this time, the AMC308 Automatic CNC Machining Centre. DAWS is a family-run business specialising in the manufacture of high-quality aluminium doors, windows, bi-folds and rooflights for both the domestic and commercial markets. The company was looking to increase productivity and boost its business growth cost effectively without the need to take on new staff – and Kombimatec provided the solutions. When its latest addition of the AMC308 machining centre joined the fabricator’s manufacturing plant in Bootle, it was immediately among friends as almost every machine DAWS has is a Kombimatec. Within the last 18 months alone, the company also purchased a DGS500 Electronic Double Mitre Saw, CC120 Power Crimper, AFV362 Variable Angle End Miller and MGS460 Upstroke Mitre Saw. The AMC308 machining centre was developed by Kombimatec for both aluminium and PVC-U profiles. Manufactured with a solid steel construction using high quality components, it incorporates advanced CNC control with CADCAM software that provides exceptional levels of precision and reliability during production. DAWS version comes with a 5HP electro-spindle inverter driven to 180000 rpm, closed loop servo driven system, automatic safety guard, and voltage monitor for electrical protection. Like all Kombimatec machinery, the user-friendly AMC308 machining centre is a cinch to operate and program, so all the staff at DAWS are able to use it with ease. An automatic multi-tool changer allows the machine to process complex tasks without interruption, and it automates traditionally time-consuming tasks – including all drilling, routing, slotting, and milling functions – allowing staff to get on with other jobs. Its faster processing speed increases output while the machine’s accuracy reduces wastage too. 34 | September 2021

According to Dave Harrison, Director at DAWS, “The AMC308 is a benchmark for fabricators establishing a window fabricating business in our industry. Previously we used manual copy routers to complete the prep work and it got to the point where we had one person working the router all day. From a cost point of view this machine will easily pay for itself in 2 years. For us, the main benefits are accuracy and efficiency. The CNC has enabled us to increase our output massively.” Operations on the production floor are now super-efficient as the whole team has benefited from the improved processing, with the aim to increase efficiencies and processing orders and accelerate business growth – all while ensuring the ever-important consistent high quality and precision of the results. “Like many of our loyal customers, DAWS prides itself on supplying the best quality, premium door and window products on time every time – and Kombimatec are proud to continue to provide the solutions to help them achieve that,” said Kombimatec’s Director David Parsons. Kombimatec have been an industry-leading manufacturer and supplier of precision machinery used to fabricate windows and doors for over 35 years, delivering machines for working PVC-U and aluminium profiles in the UK and worldwide.
