White Cottage Greenhouses’
Glass Bathhouse Project
One-of-a-kind first floor greenhouse extension creates a coastal bathroom sanctuary enclosed in glass for Director, Writer and Actor Sean Mathias.
A unique home extension on the coast of Wales, which sees a White Cottage Greenhouse used to house a glamorous bathroom.
The client wanted to create a completely unique, and romantic en-suite bathroom which still allowed uninterrupted countryside and sea views.
Starting from price for a similar structure
For a similar size bespoke structure (this one is 6.3 x 3.3 metres,) including a porch feature, delivered and installed at ground level, will cost in the region of £36,500.
A glass box, essentially, that would take full advantage of the spectacular headland the property is situated on. White Cottage’s solution was a striking and elegant addition to the front elevation of this period home which dates back to the 1850’s.
The owners’ idiosyncratic approach to the renovations of their home pay homage to its period foundations but with a dramatic contemporary eye.
The glasshouse, with its Edwardian proportions adds plenty of additional character and sits comfortably alongside the main house.
With its teal, gloss parquet floor files, chandeliers, bronze roll-top bath and large decorative vases and sheepskin rugs, this is an utterly personal high-end sanctuary which is visually stunning and unlike anything else in the UK.
White Cottage’s ‘Glass Bathhouse’ project –features a bespoke, three-quarter span Edwardian Greenhouse in Reed Green
Q&A
TORI TOMLIN, DIRECTOR OF WHITE COTTAGE GREENHOUSES, AND CLIENT SEAN MATHIAS ABOUT THE PROJECT
Where did the inspiration come from for this project?
My partner Paul. There was a flat roof off my existing bathroom and he suggested building a room onto it.
Can you describe your vision? What were the most important elements to get right for you?
I wanted a glass box and not a solid room. And then I realised a greenhouse could be glorious.
Did you work with, or have input from, an interior designer at all?
As soon as I found White Cottage online, I didn’t need anyone else.
Tell us what it’s like to use the space
It’s romantic.
How does it connect with the rest of your home?
As an Edwardian greenhouse it fits with the 1850’s house as a unit that was added on after the house was built.
How does it connect with the surrounding landscape?
The sage green of the framework compliments the garden, and the glass allows views all around to the sea and beyond.
What is in the space besides the bath?
Teal, gloss parquet floor tiles, large decorative vases and sculptures overflowing with flowers (including bougainvillea), chandeliers, a vintage apothecary-style cabinet, sheepskin rugs, mid-century style furniture, bronze roll-top bath.
QUOTE FROM TORI TOMLIN, DIRECTOR OF WHITE COTTAGE GREENHOUSES, ON THE PROJECT
Tori Tomlin said; “We were initially a little surprised when we saw the intention was to put a greenhouse on a first-floor roof. Especially seeing as the property appeared to have a generous garden on all sides, but with these fantastic sea views, we thought they must really want to make the most of that! But then we learnt it would be the most fabulous en-suite bathroom, and we knew we were going to be part of a very special project.”
“We worked directly with Sean to bring his vision to life. The greenhouse uses our Edwardian specification which combines authentic period features with a simple, elegant aesthetic and blends perfectly with Sean’s approach to the renovations of his 1850’s home. He chose to paint the greenhouse in Reed Green to sit comfortably against the wind-swept Welsh coastline, whilst inside copper, jade, cobalt earthenware and bougainvillea create an indulgent Mediterranean feel and the stunning chandeliers and falling rose petals make it a truly romantic space.”
INSIGHT INTO USING A GREENHOUSE FOR LIFESTYLE PURPOSES
By Tori Tomlin, Director at White Cottage Greenhouses
The virtue of a greenhouse for lifestyle/ entertaining
“We’ve been extolling the virtues of the greenhouse as a versatile growing/ entertaining and lifestyle space, and as an extension of the home, since we started the business 45 years ago. In fact, I’m sure it was our parent’s views on this matter that helped persuade them other people would be interested in spending more on a beautiful, quality greenhouse that would be an attractive feature in the garden, as well as being a delightful place to spend time.
“We have experienced an increase in today’s homeowners enquiring about using a greenhouse as a multifunctional space – they certainly understand the appeal of blending their home and garden, and a greenhouse is the perfect way to do this. A beautiful space, filled with natural light and surrounded by thriving, homegrown produce, easily becomes a comfortable spot from which to entertain amongst the bounties of your labours. Allowing for a larger structure, which also accommodates dining and seating areas, was central to our launch of The Egerton Victorian greenhouse earlier this year. The first, luxury Victorian “off the peg” greenhouse in our range, The Egerton offers a greater sense of space allowing a little more room for entertaining.
Choosing a greenhouse for entertaining
“When considering a greenhouse as a multi-purpose space, a larger structure obviously gives you more scope to include furniture, but other things to think about include the footprint of your greenhouse – typically a greenhouse is rectangular with a door at the end, but combining
squarer proportions with the door positioned in the side (such as our Croft) can work better. If you are able to incorporate a partition in your greenhouse you can create different growing environments, (frost-free or temperate, for example) but you can also have one area devoted to human comfort – allowing yourselves a little heat on a chilly evening perhaps or keeping humidity levels down so soft furnishing don’t become musty.
Dining-in and dressing a greenhouse for entertaining
“If you plan to serve meals in a greenhouse, a lean-to adjacent to your kitchen can also simplify logistics. Eating what you have grown means you can measure your food miles in millimetres and enjoy freshness no supermarket, artisan deli or farm shop can compete with.
“When dressing your greenhouse for lifestyle use, it’s important to remember that it is a growing environment and anything you put in it will be exposed to a great deal more light, temperature fluctuations, humidity, and nature at large, than anything in your home. A greenhouse is also single glazed so you will have condensation inside at certain times of the day, and sunlight and moisture can wreak havoc on fabrics and wood, so think about these factors when choosing furniture and other decorative elements. A table and chairs designed for outdoor use will be far more resilient and perhaps store cushions out of the sunlight and protected from any unwanted guests.
“Think about lighting. If the greenhouse isn’t immediately accessible from your home, having the route to it lit is helpful, as well as helping to create a magical world for your guests. Inside the greenhouse, candles and lanterns are atmospheric, but if you have power available, electric lights make life easier and you can control them from your phone too.”

Hampton launches a range of
luxury timber greenhouses
Hampton has launched a new range of luxury timber greenhouses aimed at the discerning horticulturist and homeowner.
The company is the only timber greenhouse manufacturer in the UK using FSC hardwood with a chain of custody, meaning the wood is tracked from source through to the final product, ensuring true sustainability and traceability.
For over 40 years, Hampton has been synonymous with timber and glazed extensions, including bespoke orangeries and conservatories. Therefore, the expansion into the greenhouse market is a natural evolution of its product range.
Commenting on the launch, Diarmuid Gavin, renowned garden designer, television personality and author, said: “Hampton’s new range of exquisite greenhouses are bold architectural statements, built to last, impress and inspire. Whether you’re looking to grow your own veg for the first time, are a professional horticulturist, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat or stunning focal point for your garden, the new greenhouses are a space where plants and homeowners will both equally thrive.”
The four unique designs, which will retail from £27,200 to £46,900, are:
The Causeway
The flagship greenhouse with projecting gable-fronted pavilion, 4.7m x 3.0m
The Balmoral Flush gabled-fronted greenhouse, 4.7m x 3.0m
The Dunluce Gable-ended greenhouse, 4.7m x 3.0m
The Strangford
A compact, lean-to style greenhouse, 4.2m x 3.0m
A greenhouse brochure is also available to order.
Hampton’s approach to design has always been rooted in a deep appreciation of the principles of symmetry and proportion that define architectural excellence.
This guiding philosophy has also been applied to the new greenhouse range, ensuring that all of the products are not only functional but also elegant and timeless.
SUSTAINABILITY
All Hampton greenhouses are crafted from thermally-modified, FSC-certified hardwood, valued for its durability, strength and stability, meaning it is not sensitive to changes in moisture content. As the timber genuinely originates from responsibly managed forests, owners of a Hampton greenhouse can rest assured that their own gardening endeavours will not have a detrimental impact on the planet.
Mervyn Montgomery, joint director of Hampton, said: “Homeowners are undeniably underserved in the luxury greenhouse market. Aluminium dominates much of the premium greenhouse market. It’s a low-maintenance material but ultimately devoid of the richness, warmth and texture to the touch that real timber evokes. Aluminium may be easy to work with, but it comes at an environmental cost.
“At Hampton, our intention is clear: to offer what the market has failed to deliver. Our greenhouses are built from thermally modified hardwood, which is naturally beautiful, durable, and rich in architectural detail, combined with precision-engineered aluminium components only where performance demands it, such as in our ridge, gutters, and roof trims. This is about balance: craftsmanship where it shows, engineering where it counts.”
REVOLUTIONARY NEW VENTILATION SYSTEM
Ventilation is crucial in a greenhouse to regulate temperature, humidity, and air quality to support optimal growing conditions. Therefore, all Hampton’s greenhouses have thermostatically controlled roof vents (two per greenhouse as standard) and a single-lever side window system for easy manual ventilation. In addition, Hampton’s patent-pending ventilated glazing system uses a specially designed clip to hold the glass slightly off the timber rebate, creating an air gap that allows condensation to drain down the glass and escape externally. Externally, a powdercoated aluminium trim snaps into place, replicating the classic putty detail of original period glazing. The system not only protects the timber and improves ventilation but also allows for easy glass replacement if it was ever required.
Mervyn Montgomery concluded: “Timber has origin and is the original material used for greenhouses, so it’s hardly surprising that aluminium greenhouses try to replicate this look. Our approach to greenhouses marks a revival of balanced proportions, material authenticity, and enduring quality - redefining the very idea of what a greenhouse can and should be.”
PREMIUM DESIGN FEATURES
Although the timber is capable of being left untreated, allowing it to age to a silver-grey patina, Hampton recommends selecting one of its heritage paints. The company’s two-component coating system ToughCoat™, enhances the durability of the timber, giving it added protection, sealing out moisture and shielding against UV, meaning it is perfectly suited for the demanding conditions of a greenhouse environment
In addition, Hampton’s signature fleur-de-lis metal ridge and side bracing avoid the use of industrial portal frame construction, which is typically used in the industry and limits the aesthetics of the greenhouse.
A picturesque countryside cottage in Hampshire is transformed with Bereco Timber Windows
Imagine a charming countryside cottage, its character defined by exposed wooden beams, warm red brick in a classic herringbone pattern, and the delicate fragrance of wisteria climbing the walls and balcony. The balcony, a peaceful retreat, perfect for enjoying a morning coffee or watching the sun set over the landscaped garden. This idyllic setting is home to Louise and Kevin.
After an extensive search, they purchased their property in January 2018. At the time, the interior felt dark and outdated, with worn carpets in need of replacement. Working with a limited budget, they initially focused on renovating the interior, opening up the kitchen and dining room to create a brighter, more functional space for their family. Replacing the existing uPVC windows was always part of their vision, but due to cost considerations, they decided to postpone the project for two years. When the time came, they sought the expertise of Alex Hull, Managing Director at Back to Front Exterior Design, to assist on the design detailing, following a recommendation from a friend who worked as an interior designer.

Their home, dating back to the 18th century, was originally two separate houses, one of which was sadly destroyed in a fire in the 1940s. Keen to retain as many original features as possible, Louise and Kevin noticed that some of the windows had timber frames with uPVC inserts. They decided that Bereco timber Flush French Doors and Flush Casement Windows were perfect for the rear and side elevations. Believing that some of original windows were likely metal, Alex suggested replacing the front elevation with bronze windows. These elements were brought together with carefully selected paint colours, ensuring a cohesive and elegant finish throughout the home.
A TESTIMONIAL FROM LOUISE & KEVIN
“We had a fantastic experience with Bereco. During the design process we made a number of changes and the quote required updating several times. Nothing was too much trouble the team were incredibly patient and promptly and accurately updated our quote. Our windows and doors arrived on schedule, and when we encountered a minor issue with the seal on one window, it was resolved quickly and without any hassle. We are absolutely delighted with the results they look so much better than the old uPVC windows!”
Louise & Kevin are especially impressed with the outstanding quality and finish of their Bereco timber windows and doors. After over four years post installation, they were initially concerned about how the south-facing rear of the house would handle prolonged sun exposure. However, the paintwork has remained flawless, showing no signs of blistering or wear. Looking back on their experience, Louise said: “the windows look as good as the day they were installed.”
The new timber Flush Casement Windows feature a single horizontal glazing bar, designed with 90 degree hinges to provide both emergency escape access and unobstructed views of the beautifully landscaped garden. The Flush French Doors, each with two horizontal bars, maintain design continuity with the window design while allowing light to flood into the home.
For the ironmongery, they had already chosen antique brass fittings for the kitchen and cabinetry, making Rumbled Brass the perfect match for their timber windows and doors. This finish seamlessly tied together the interior details and complemented the bronze windows. The addition of a Stay Bar on the Flush Casement Windows, paired with a traditional Bulb End Handle, enhanced the authenticity of the design.
For the internal finish they chose Signal White – RAL 9003, which matched the existing woodwork, originally painted in an Albany shade. Externally, they sought a colour that would enhance the natural stonework of the house with a warm feel. Working with Alex and testing various paint samples in different light conditions, they found Farrow & Ball No. 211 Stoney Ground, to be a beautifully soft, timeless shade that complements the home’s historic charm.

Residence
7 windows transform
Farmhouse-inspired new-build homes in Leicestershire
A beautiful selection of new-build properties in Austrey, lying mid-way between Tamworth in Staffordshire and Ashby-de-laZouch in Leicestershire, have been elevated with the installation of Residence 7 windows in Painswick and Corse Lawn colourways.
Expertly installed by Swadlincote Window Company Ltd, this installation contained 78 windows in total, with the configuration featuring side openers throughout. The choice of The Residence Collection windows brings classic country elegance and premium performance to this traditionally styled, farmhouse-inspired development.
Working in partnership with Lychgate Homes and architectural designers David Granger Architectural
Design Ltd, the Austrey Fields project required careful consideration to ensure the windows complemented the rural setting, all while delivering the modern comfort and efficiency expected in a new home. The development itself has been thoroughly designed to fit seamlessly into its surroundings, so the choice of The Residence Collection’s R7 system was therefore a natural fit for both aesthetic and performance reasons.
Manufactured using welded joints, the windows feature 6.4 laminated, planitherm glazing with argon - a specification selected for energy efficiency, acoustic control and enhanced security. The developer also selected beautiful chrome inline handles in order to add a contemporary yet refined finishing touch.
The colours were chosen to create harmony with the style of the rest of the exterior of the homes, as
well as contrast each other on the wider development. The Residence 7 windows in Painswickand Corse Lawn on the exterior, paired with a Chalk White interior, deliver a beautifully balanced aesthetic that captures both character and charm.
Painswick, installed on three of the properties, has a soft grey-green hue which echoes the timeless elegance of rural surroundings, and has quickly become one of the most sought-after finishes for the R7
collection. Corse Lawn, installed on the final four, is a darker palette filled with undertones of green, brown and grey which effortlessly creates a classic 19th century feel.
The colour choices contrast one another on the development, creating a striking and interesting look throughout. On the inside of each property, the selection of clean, fresh Chalk White will complement any interior palette effortlessly.
Natasha Vandaele at Swadlincote Window Company Ltd, explained: “The whole development at Austrey Fields has been carefully thought out to fit seamlessly into this lovely village setting - so ensuring that the windows were in keeping with that was really important. We regularly work with Lychgate Homes, and they contacted us as they were looking for flush windows to tie in with the contemporary aesthetic of the development. R7 was deemed the best choice for all of the new properties due to the sleek design and the fact they are flush externally and internally. They are delighted with the finished result, as are we!”
Jo Trotman, Marketing Manager at The Residence Collection, added: “This is another stunning example of how the R7 system can elevate both heritage restorations and new-build properties alike. The combination of classic styling, high-performance glazing and meticulous detailing ensures the homes look timeless, while offering everyday comfort and security once the homeowners move in. We have enjoyed working closely with the team at the Swadlincote Window Company on this installation and are delighted that they are so thrilled with the end result.”

Combining the perfect blend of generous glazed panels with high quality slim steel profiles, the collection offers endless opportunities to create stylish doors and room screening to meet the growing demand for light-filled, functional interiors.
Available in three options - hinged, sliding and the newly introduced pivot, the Heritage-style doors can be configured with either single or double leaves, along with optional side elements and transoms for large-scale interior screening. The
flexible nature of the range allow doors-sets measuring up to 5000mm wide by 4000mm to be achieved, whilst the frameless pivot door supports an impressive single door leaf up to 2000mm in width making it an adaptable, yet sophisticated choice – ideal for bold architectural statements.
Two slim glazing bead styles are available to suit different design preferences – an angled version with exposed screw heads creates a traditional industrial look, whilst a narrow, 15mm bead provides a modern, sleek appearance. All doors are glazed with 6mm laminated safety glass in either Clear or Clear white, whilst the steel profiles are supplied in RAL 9005 Jet black matt as standard. Five additional preferred colours, including Traffic white and Anthracite grey, together with bespoke RAL colours and textured and pearl-effect finishes offer maximum design flexibility.
Further enhancements to the range include an optional door closer for the hinged doors, which closes the doors gently, whilst a Smart-Stop set for sliding doors provides smooth and silent door operation with secure locking of the door leaves in the end-of-travel position. A new Retroloft sliding door track allows for the creation of single and double-leaf retro sliding doors, showcasing bold exposed rollers that echo the collections industrial heritage.
Completing the system is a selection of high-quality ironmongery, with lever handles, push-bar options, and recessed handles available in Jet black RAL 9005 or stainless steel as standard.

Prepare your home for Autumn and Winter with Heritage Window Collection by Deceuninck
As autumn settles in and winter approaches, homeowners begin to feel the familiar chill in the air. While the cozy atmosphere of the season is something to look forward to, the rising energy bills that come with colder weather certainly aren’t. As temperatures drop, your heating system works harder to keep your home warm, and the cost of running it can quickly add up.
KEEP THE WARMTH INSIDE THIS WINTER
Older windows, especially those with single glazing or poor insulation, can let heat escape easily, forcing your heating system to work overtime. This results in higher energy bills, more frequent use of the heating, and an overall less comfortable living space. As the colder months approach, it's important to make sure your home is prepared to retain heat effectively.
The Heritage Window Collection by Deceuninck offers a stylish and practical solution to help you keep your home warm without breaking the bank.
• Energy Efficiency for Winter: The uPVC frames and advanced glazing options (double or triple glazing) in Deceuninck’s Heritage windows provide exceptional thermal insulation. This helps trap heat inside your home, reducing the amount of energy needed to keep your home at a comfortable temperature.
• Lower Heating Costs: By upgrading to high-performance windows, you can reduce your household energy consumption by up to 15%. This means you can enjoy a warm home during the colder months without having to spend more money on heating. Every degree your home stays warm without extra heating means significant savings on your energy bill.
• No Drafts, No Cold Spots: With their superior insulation, Deceuninck Heritage windows eliminate cold spots and drafts, creating a more evenly heated home. You won’t have to worry about chilly rooms or constantly adjusting your thermostat.
As temperatures dip, heating becomes one of the largest expenses in your home. According to the Energy Saving Trust, heating accounts for around 60% of a typical household's energy bill. When your home is poorly insulated, whether due to old windows or inefficient frames, heat escapes easily, and your heating system has to work overtime to maintain a comfortable temperature.
This increased workload leads to higher energy consumption and, ultimately, higher bills. In fact, many homeowners report energy bill spikes of 25-40% during the colder months.
THE BENEFITS OF DECEUNINCK HERITAGE WINDOWS THIS WINTER
Replacing your old windows with Deceuninck Heritage windows offers more than just a cosmetic upgrade. It’s an energy saving strategy that will pay off through the winter months and beyond.
• Thermal Efficiency: Deceuninck’s Heritage windows can achieve energy ratings up to A++.
• Durability and Low Maintenance: These windows are made from durable uPVC, which won’t warp, crack, or fade over time. Unlike timber windows, they require minimal upkeep, so you won’t have to worry about regular maintenance during the colder months.
A LONG-TERM SOLUTION FOR WINTER SAVINGS
Upgrading to Deceuninck Heritage windows is a smart way to prepare your home for the harsh winter months while keeping your energy bills in check. With superior insulation, increased comfort, and improved energy efficiency, these windows offer immediate relief from high heating costs, and they continue to save you money for years to come.
Whether you live in a period property or simply want to add a touch of traditional charm to your modern home, Deceuninck’s Heritage Window Collection is the ideal solution to both preserve your home’s aesthetics and reduce your energy expenditure.
As the nights draw in and the temperatures drop, keep your home warm and inviting with the Heritage Window Collection. Designed to replicate timeless style while delivering modern A-rated efficiency, these windows help you save energy and stay comfortable all year. Trust in Snug for your new front door!
Your front door makes a bold statement – after all, it is the focal point for anyone coming to your home.
For new visitors, a first impression. For old friends, a familiar welcome to your world. It has to keep the great British weather at bay too, so whether it faces a battering from stormy weather or is basking in the summer sun (and probably both in some locations) it plays a big part in ensuring that you feel safe and snug in your home.
For peace of mind, a modern, properly fitted and well-maintained door shows that security is important to the homeowner – giving intruders another reason to think again.
And don’t forget “kerb appeal”. If, or when, the time comes to sell your home, the state of your front door is all important. You may sell years after you fit that door but choosing wisely and maintaining it regularly will keep your kerb appeal riding high.
THERE’S PLENTY OF CHOICE OUT THERE, SO WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Composite
With a little extra initial outlay, a composite door can offer decades of performance with minimal maintenance. Impressive strength, durability and energy efficiency are derived from multiple core sections sandwiched between other material layers, commonly contained within a glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) skin. A final flourish of design and functionality can be achieved through glass and hardware selection.
uPVC
A brilliant, cost-effective solution for any external door, uPVC is easy to maintain, energy efficient and is available in a wide range of colours and finishes. Replacing an old timber door? No problem, and you can even get wood grain finishes to recreate that classic look.
Aluminium
Amazing performance, although the look and feel of an aluminium door may not always suit older, period properties. For that sleek modern look and even a little “industrial/ functional” feel there is little to better it. Extremely rigid and hard-wearing, you can be confident that with expert fitting, routine cleaning and regular maintenance an aluminium door will give decade upon decade of service.

TURNING OFF-CUTS INTO SOMETHING NEW
Naturalmat is no stranger to using sustainable and eco-friendly resources, although their limited edition, closed loop fabric in collaboration with IINOUIIO, is the first of it’s kind in the UK. Production remnants were recycled and transformed to create a completely new fabric (ReNew™) , that was then used to make a new product for Naturalmat. The fabric can be chosen for upholstery across any of Naturalmat’s beds, bases and headboards, furthering the brand’s commitment to sustainability and circular design.
“Many people refer to the materials we work with as ‘waste’, but to us it’s a valuable raw material, too often limited by our skill and imagination. It has been a joy to work with Naturalmat. And they haven't stopped there! Naturalmat are also partners with The Cotton Lives On™ Recycling Programme , who are on a mission to collect and recycle old cottons and give them a whole new lease of life. Together they have created a new Naturalmat x Cotton Lives On™ Mattress
Cotton clothes are collected from consumers alongside offcuts from garment production. These remnants are then recycled into soft, fluffy cotton and denim pads, the perfect filling for their mattresses. The recycled denim pads are then layered together with organic wool and covered with a recycled cotton mattress ticking.
The mattresses are then donated to various charities across the UK that are working to tackle sleep poverty such as Single Homeless Project , Refuweegee and Shelter . So far they have donated 96 mattresses since they started in 2021, and plan to increase this number every year.

Bringing light home
Why translucent glass is the future of modern living
Natural light, well-considered design, energy efficiency, and privacy are no longer luxuries in residential architecture—they’re expectations. Together, they shape how a home feels and functions, influencing everything from mood and comfort to long-term sustainability. But achieving all four in harmony is often a complex task.
Solid walls provide privacy and insulation but limit daylight. Clear glazing offers openness and views but brings challenges: glare, solar heat gain, and the erosion of privacy. In most homes, the compromise is familiar—curtains or blinds that block out the very light the windows were meant to invite in.
Solera Reserve™ introduces a more balanced approach. This translucent glazing material is designed to diffuse daylight naturally and evenly, softening harsh sunlight and eliminating the visual discomfort of glare. Rather than bouncing around unpredictably or concentrating into hotspots, light enters the home as a calm, ambient glow. This creates a serene, usable interior environment throughout the day—one that doesn’t require constant adjustment or additional shading.
About Doug Milburn
Dr. Doug Milburn is a long-time serial entrepreneur and innovator who has brought his vision and passion to manufacturing, engineering, software development, and process engineering for more than 35 years. In 1995, Dr. Milburn and his wife Michelle co-founded Advanced Glazings, which invented Solera® and Aerogel window products for minimizing sunlight glare in an energy-efficient way. Milburn is proudly based in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
The benefits go beyond aesthetics. With thermal insulation values reaching R25 and sound attenuation up to STC 48, Reserve contributes meaningfully to the performance of the building envelope. The result is a quieter, more energy-efficient home, with improved comfort across seasons. In the evening, the material glows outward from within—offering privacy without visual opacity and giving the home a refined nighttime presence, almost lantern-like in effect.
What sets Solera Reserve™ apart from other privacyoriented glass—such as acid-etched, sandblasted, or laminated alternatives—is its Light Diffusion Power (LDP). This refers to its ability to distribute daylight not just softly, but deeply and evenly into a space. While most privacy glazing scatters light in narrow or inconsistent ways, Solera creates a broad field of illumination that enhances the livability and function of every room it touches.
Material integrity is also key. Reserve is made entirely from real glass, not plastic, film, or resin-based substitutes. This ensures durability over time and compatibility with high-quality architectural details— making it suitable for discerning homeowners investing in homes built to last.
While originally developed for public architecture— museums, academic institutions, civic buildings—Solera Reserve™ is now being integrated into residential projects where daylight and discretion are equally valued. For custom homes, renovations, or even urban infill projects with close sightlines to neighbors, it offers the opportunity to bring in natural light without giving anything up in return.
For homeowners working with architects and designers to shape refined, high-performance living spaces, Solera Reserve™ provides a thoughtful alternative to conventional glass. It reframes light not as a challenge to be managed, but as a material to be shaped—adding dimension, softness, and privacy in equal measure.

HOMES & GARDENS
Autumn-Ready Homes
As the season of cosy jumpers, crunchy leaves, and pumpkin spice rolls in, so too do the hidden hassles of autumn - from muddy hallways and cluttered cupboards to spider invasions and lawn neglect.
We have some practical advice from Andrew White, home expert at Harbour Lifestyle , who’s sharing his top four mustdo autumn home hacks to help households get ahead of the season – and save time, money, and stress in the process.
Key takeaways include:
• How to do a “hallway reset” that keeps mud and mess at the door.
• Why spiders love dark laundry piles (and how to spider-proof your space).
• The simple lawn move that protects it from winter damage.
• How to prep outdoor furniture properly before the frost bites.
I’M A HOME EXPERT – HERE ARE MY TOP FOUR MUST-DO AUTUMN HOME HACKS TO SAVE YOU TIME, MONEY AND STRESS
FROM MUDDY FLOORS TO SPIDER INVASIONS - HERE’S HOW TO GET YOUR HOME AUTUMN-READY, BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.
As the days grow shorter and the weather turns cooler, autumn brings cosy evenings, colourful leaves - and a whole new set of household headaches. Muddy hallways, cluttered cupboards, frosty lawns, and creepy crawlies can quickly take over, if you don’t prepare in advance.
To help homeowners across the country get ahead of the season, Andrew White, home expert at Harbour Lifestyle, has revealed his top four must-do autumn hacks to keep homes clean, organised and stress free all season long.
Beat the muddy hallway chaos
“When the wet and windy weather comes sets in entryways are the first to suffer - wet coats, muddy boots, and umbrellas pile up, and suddenly you’re tripping over clutter before you’ve even got through the door,” Andrew says.
The trick? A pre-autumn hallway reset.
“To save yourself the stress, before autumn begins, take some time to prep your home’s entryway. Declutter summer items, and add storage baskets, coat hooks, and a sturdy doormat to help keep wet shoes and outerwear contained - preventing clutter and mud from spreading around the rest of the house.”
“No matter how frustrating, muddy floors are almost impossible to avoid in autumn, especially with pets or children. But, don’t make the rookie mistake of wiping it up straight away. Let it dry first - otherwise it will smear everywhere. Then, sweep it up, and mop or wipe the remnants for a sparkling finish.”
Stop spiders from moving in!
Autumn is prime time for spiders hunting a warm hide out – and messy corners are their dream home.
“Spiders start seeking shelter indoors during the autumnal months, and clutter gives them plenty of warm and cosy hiding spots,” Andrew advises.
“Critters like spiders prefer to shelter on cluttered surfaces with folds or crevices, like piles of clothes, recycling, or books. They especially seek out textiles that are dark in colour – so your pile of autumn laundry is (unfortunately) their ideal nesting space.
“To avoid a creepy crawly surprise, take the opportunity to declutter and tidy corners, cupboards, and storage areas, and remove clothes, shoes, or boxes that aren’t in regular use. Not only does this make your home feel more organised in preparation for the upcoming festive period, it also discourages spiders from setting up camp.”
Protect your lawn before winter kills it
“Lawns don’t stop growing overnight, but, once temperatures dip below 10°C the growth slows right down,” Andrew explains. “To give your lawn the best chance of thriving next spring, aim to give it a final cut towards the end of October, leaving it slightly longer than usual to help protect the roots.
“Avoid cutting too short, as that leaves the lawn vulnerable to frost and damage, especially if we see snow or ice over the winter. If the weather stays mild into November, you may get away with one extra light trim, but after that, it’s best to leave the mower in storage until next year.
“To help your lawn stay green and healthy over the colder months, ensure you regularly rake fallen leaves so the grass still gets light and air, and avoid walking on it when it’s frosty or waterlogged to prevent damage. These small jobs now will leave you with a greener, healthier lawn come spring.”
Don’t forget your outdoor furniture
Often overlooked, but outdoor furniture needs TLC too.
“Not all outdoor furniture pieces need the same level of care once autumn arrives,” Andrew explains. “Aluminium and high-quality rattan can usually stay outside yearround if they’re protected by a cover, as they’re designed to withstand rain and wind.
“Wooden furniture, however, is more vulnerable to damp and frost, so it should either be treated with protective oil or moved into a shed or garage. Cushions and fabrics should always be brought indoors to prevent mould and fading.
“The same principle applies to children’s play equipment. Swings, climbing frames and plastic playhouses may cope with being left outside, but check metal parts for rust and ensure all fixings are secure after wet or windy weather.”
Autumn is all about small, smart changes – a few hours or prep now will save weeks of stress, money and mess later in the season.

Autumn’s nectar boost
– The best late season plants for pollinators
Pollinators face a diminishing supply of nectar and pollen as the days shorten, and we head into the autumn season.
While spring and summer offer a hive of activity for our bees and butterflies, the cooler months can prove challenging. However, the team at British Garden Centres has put together its guide to the best autumn plants for pollinators that will keep your garden buzzing as we head into the last quarter of the year.
Asters: One of the most recognisable autumn flowers, asters bloom profusely in shades of purple, pink, and white. Their daisy-like appearance offers abundant nectar, attracting bees right until the first frosts. Asters are particularly valuable for providing continuity of forage when other plants have finished flowering.
Sedum: Sedums are magnets for bees and butterflies, as their flat flower heads provide perfect landing pads, while their nectar offers an essential energy source. Sedums also add structure and colour to gardens well into winter as their dried seed heads linger.
Ivy: Often overlooked, ivy flowers in late autumn and provides one of the most important food supplies for insects at this time of year. As a native evergreen climber, ivy’s small flowers are rich in nectar, feeding bees, wasps, and flies, whilst its berries offer sustenance to birds.
Echinacea: Also known as the coneflower, these colourful, conicalshaped blooms thrive late into autumn. Pollinating insects will flock
to their spiky centres, which are packed with nectar. Echinacea adds height to gardens and is striking in late season as seed heads remain into winter.
Verbena bonariensis: A tall, wiry perennial, Verbena produces clouds of tiny lilac flowers from late summer into autumn. Full of nectar, the plant is highly attractive to butterflies, while providing continuous forage for bees.
Japanese Anemone: Elegant and with a long flowering period, Japanese anemones provide a late burst of pink and white flowers to brighten the days as they get shorter. Their open, pollen-filled centres are well loved by a range of insects, providing much needed resources in the cooling months.
Dahlias: The single flowered varieties are highly valuable in autumn as their central discs remain open and rich in nectar, providing a feast for bees and hoverflies when resources grow scarce.
Mahonia: With spires of fragrant yellow blooms appearing in late autumn and even winter, mahonia is one of the few shrubs that bridge the seasonal nectar gap. Its berries later provide food for birds, making it a late season wildlife champion.
Kniphofia: Commonly known as Red Hot Poker, these striking spikes of fiery flowers bloom from late summer into autumn. Kniphofia produces
abundant nectar that attracts a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies, adding a bold splash of colour and drama to your garden while supporting insect populations.
Crocosmia: Crocosmia offers vibrant red and orange flowers that bloom in late summer and early autumn. The nectar-rich blossoms are favoured by bees and butterflies, and their arching stems add movement and interest to autumn borders.
Salvia: With vibrant tubular flowers, salvias are magnets for long-tongued bees and butterflies. Their extended blooming season makes them ideal for bridging the nectar gap and will keep pollinators visiting your garden well into the autumn months.
