HE ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM of Chatham County Schools includes more than 43 dance, music, theatre, and visual arts faculty providing instruction to the more than 7,000 students involved in arts coursework. Educational research indicates that studying the arts cultivates essential qualities students need to succeed in the 21st century. Arts education promotes developing students’ sense of global awareness, creativity and innovation, collaboration, abilities to access and evaluate information, and abilities to adapt to varied roles and responsibilities. In Chatham County Schools, all students in kindergarten through eighth grade have access to weekly arts education classes. In high school, students may take a full range of introductory through advanced-level coursework. Students who pursue careers in the arts receive the support to develop the critical skills and discipline needed for the career world. Partnerships among arts education faculty, higher education, arts organizations, and community artists allow the sharing of expertise and experience and provide comprehensive arts education opportunities for students. Each year, March is designated as National Music in Our Schools Month (in fact, it is also Youth Art Month, Theatre is Our Schools Month, and Dance in Our Schools Month). Chatham County Schools is proud to present tonight’s program as a culmination of this month-long celebration. Visit Americans for the Arts for tools to promote strong resources, connections, and partnerships for arts education in our community.
