HE ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM of Chatham County Schools includes more than 43 dance, music, theatre, and visual arts faculty providing instruction to the more than 7,000 students involved in arts coursework. Educational research indicates that studying the arts cultivates essential qualities students need to succeed in the 21st century. Arts education promotes developing students’ sense of global awareness, creativity and innovation, collaboration, abilities to access and evaluate information, and abilities to adapt to varied roles and responsibilities. In Chatham County Schools, all students in kindergarten through eighth grade have access to weekly arts education classes. In high school, students may take a full range of introductory through advanced-level coursework. Students who pursue careers in the arts receive the support to develop the critical skills and discipline needed for the career world. Partnerships among arts education faculty, higher education, arts organizations, and community artists allow the sharing of expertise and experience and provide comprehensive arts education opportunities for students. Each year, March is designated as National Music in Our Schools Month (in fact, it is also Youth Art Month, Theatre is Our Schools Month, and Dance in Our Schools Month). Chatham County Schools is proud to present tonight’s program as a culmination of this month-long celebration. atie Wernette, a native of Pensacola, FL, is in her ninth year of teaching. In those nine years she has taught both middle and high school chorus, piano, music appreciation, and theatre in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. Her choral groups have received both superior and excellent ratings at choral festivals across the southeast, as well as students performing at all-state events. Mrs. Wernette received her Bachelor’s of Music Education from the University of West Florida, and her Master’s of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Tennessee where she served as Graduate Assistant. In her final year at UT, she served as Graduate Teaching Assistant and was the director of the Women’s Chorale. Mrs. Wernette toured with the UT Chamber Singers in St. Petersburg and Moscow in 2005, and reunited with them for performances throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland in 2012. In her spare time, Mrs. Wernette enjoys being outside, cooking, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Katie Wernette

Lisa Johnson

isa Johnson has been teaching in Chatham County for 19 years. She is the organist for Church of the Good Shepherd in Asheboro. She is also the accompanist for the Randolph Summer Vacation Playhouse. For fun, she enjoys playing with a Taiko drum group. Ms. Johnson graduated from Western Carolina in 1981 with a Bachelors degree in Music Education, and in 1983 with a Masters in Music Education.


Dr. DeMar Neal

N

orth Carolina native DeMar Neal joined the Meredith faculty in 2010, where he teaches applied voice, lyric diction for singers, and art song repertoire. With a special talent for light opera and comedic roles, Neal made several praiseworthy debuts during the 2011–2012 season, including: El Dancaïro (Carmen) with NC Opera; Papageno (Die Zauberflöte) with Varna Opera; and Ko-Ko (The Mikado) with Greenville Light Opera Works. The Greenville News lauded his turn as the cheap tailor-cum-executioner saying, “His Ko-Ko is bitingly crisp in expression and action—a performance artful and frequently hilarious. Neal possesses the soul of a true Savoyard.” He has performed a wide variety of stage roles, including: Junius in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, Belcore in Donizetti’s L’Elisird’Amore, Don Andres de Ribeira in Offenbach’s La Périchole, and Falke in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. Dr. Neal is also an active recitalist, adjudicator, masterclass technician, and researcher. In addition to university service, Dr. Neal currently holds the position of Secretary for the North Carolina chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, NATS, Phi Kappa Phi, and the National Opera Association. He received his B.M. in vocal performance from UNC-Chapel Hill, his M.M. in vocal performance from The Boston Conservatory; and his D.M. in vocal performance from Florida State University.

Brenda Fernandez

renda Fernandez received the Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in Ohio and the Master of Music in Accompanying from Manhattan School of Music in NYC. She has performed throughout the Caribbean as a soloist, accompanist and director of jazz band on cruise ships and as an accompanist throughout the US, Canada and Europe. Locally Ms. Fernandez has accompanied with the NC Opera, UNCG Summer Music Camps, numerous high schools, and for local and statewide competitions and college auditions. Currently she is the staff accompanist at Meredith College and also accompanies the Meredith College Choirs, Capital City Girls Choir, Millbrook High School Chorus, and Sanderson High School Chorus. Ms. Fernandez also has a private piano studio, teaches private piano lessons at Ravenscroft School and is the organist/accompanist at St. Giles Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. She is a former K-6 general music teacher and 7-12 choral director. Ms. Fernandez is a highly sought after accompanist and adjudicator in the Triangle area. She is a member of the Raleigh Piano Teachers Association, NC Music Teachers Association and Music Teachers National Association.
