Brett Cox

returns to Northwood for his second year directing the instrumental music program. From Denton, NC, he attended Southwestern Randolph High in Asheboro. He graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill as part of the NC Teaching Fellows Program where he performed with the UNC Wind Ensemble and was a member of the UNC Trombone Quartet. Cox has served as the Low Brass Instructor, Marching Instructor, and Drill Writer at West Stanly High School in Oakboro.

Matthew Hanson is now in his 4th year teaching choral music and guitar at NHS. A

2012 graduate of UNCG, he received both Bachelor of Music Performance and Bachelor of Music Education degrees. Hanson is an active member of the National Association for Music Education as well as the American Choral Director’s Association. He serves as faculty advisor for the Tri-M Music Honor Society, music director/arranger for Pitch Please, and assistant band director for the Marching Chargers. Hanson resides just outside of Asheboro with his wife, Rebekah, his daughter, Annabelle, and their dog, Ellie.

Vuelie Na na na heia na na hi ja na Na heia heia na ja no a ha na hei o no a na No a no no a haia no no a no no a haia no No a no no a no Vuelie is the South Sámi word for “a yoik”. Yoik is both a type of Saami song, and a unique vocal style used to perform this (often referred to as “chanting”). "The syllables in the song have no linguistic meaning. In 2013, NHSAEF was honored that judges for the Kennedy Center School of Excellence Awards particularly noted the work of NHSAEF, “Northwood is unique in its Foundation support and subsequent scholarship awards, which also serve to exemplify the remarkable parental involvement your program has achieved.” Please become a member of NHSAEF and continue this vital work supporting NorthwoodArts. NHSAEF provides teacher grants, Carlin Camp Awards to send underclassmen to summer arts camps, and scholarships to graduating seniors. Memberships are $10 and only $5 for students and young alumni. Purchase a “Seat of Honor” in Northwood’s B. J. Lee Auditorium and support NHSAEF! Your engraved tag will be afixed to a seat of your choice. Honor someone who has made a difference in your life, your child, or alumni. Purchase a seat in memory of a loved one. You may include first and last name, date of graduation or occasion. Your name will also be listed on all arts programs for one year. Encore Category—$100. (These will remain on seats. If we run out of seats in several years, oldest labels will be placed on a wall plaque in the auditorium.) In 2013, NHSAEF was honored that judges for the Kennedy Center School of Excellence Awards particularly noted the work of NHSAEF, “Northwood is unique in its Foundation support and subsequent scholarship awards, which also serve to exemplify the remarkable parental involvement your program has achieved.” Please become a member of NHSAEF and continue this vital work supporting NorthwoodArts. NHSAEF provides teacher grants, Carlin Camp Awards to send underclassmen to summer arts camps, and scholarships to graduating seniors. Memberships are $10 and only $5 for students and young alumni. Purchase a “Seat of Honor” in Northwood’s B. J. Lee Auditorium and support NHSAEF! Your engraved tag will be afixed to a seat of your choice. Honor someone who has made a difference in your life, your child, or alumni. Purchase a seat in memory of a loved one. You may include first and last name, date of graduation or occasion. Your name will also be listed on all arts programs for one year. Encore Category—$100. (These will remain on seats. If we run out of seats in several years, oldest labels will be placed on a wall plaque in the auditorium.) For example: Honoring f Jaqueline Helgans (’NHS ’15) Tracy Turnbold in Hairspray Front Row Show Stoppers Category—$500 to $2000. Contributions that underwrite a scholarship will have tags placed on the Front Row and include naming priviledges for a scholarship. $500 for a Carlin Camp Scholarship. $1000.00 for a college scholarship. $500.00–$2000.00 for an arts program donation.
