Kehoe ‘not scared’ by Denis O’Brien’s legal action Wexford Minister Paul Kehoe has said he is not ‘scared’ by the legal action being taken against him by the country’s wealthiest business man, Denis O’Brien. Mr O’Brien has substantial media assets and is the main shareholder in the company which owns the People Group of Newspapers in Co. Wexford. This week Minister Kehoe said he was in no way worried that Mr O’Brien‘s legal action would impact on him personally. ‘It doesn’t scare me at all’, he added The Minister said he was surprised by Mr O’Brien’s decision to take legal action against an all party committee of the Oireachtas. ‘I was certainly surprised, but he is entitled to do what

Paul Kehoe

he likes’ Minister Kehoe said the Committee on Procedures and Privileges which is the one being sued by the businessman, has yet to meet to consider the position but he anticipated that they would decide to meet the challenge head on in the courts ‘It is important to remember that I am being sued only as part of the Oireacthas Committee so I don’t believe this action will have any personal implications for me’, said Mr Kehoe. Mr O’Brien’s case involves his contention that there was abuse of Dail privilege by Deputy Catherine Murphy in relation to his banking affairs and centres on the alleged

failure of the CPP to deal adequately with the matter. ‘Obviously it is a matter for Denis O’Brien himself but it is surprising that he would seek to challenge an Oireachtas committee in this way’, he added On the general question of the use of Dail privilege Mr Kehoe said that in a parliamentary democracy it was vital that Dail privilege be retained and used properly. He cited the use of Dail Privilege by Brendan Howlin and Jim Higgins several years ago to raise the question of Garda activities in Donegal as an example of how it could be used very effectively for the public good. Kehoe ‘not scared’ by Denis O’Brien’s legal action (Continued from front) However, he said that over the past five years-------the lifetime of this Dail-------Privilege in the House had been used very ‘loosely’ by some TDs and in some instances it had been abused and this would damage the system in the future. ‘If this continues then the effectiveness of Dail privilege will be weakened because in the future if someone uses it to raise an issue which is of grave importance the danger is that they will not be believed because of the loose manner in which some TDs have been using it over the past five years’ The Wexford Minister has been prominent in the headlines over the past month as a result of comments he made about

Enda Kenny’s continued leadership of the party when he appeared to suggest that the Mayo man would continue to lead the party into the next election and the one beyond that. Several of his party colleagues were critical of his comments in relation to Enda Kenny but Mr Kehoe said the problem arose from a misunderstanding and what was reported was not what he had said. ‘I was always talking about the upcoming election that’s all. But look this is August and this was an August story and it’s all over now’, he added. He said he did not believe that he had been damaged in any way by the controversy which raged for more than a week until it was dampened down by Mr Kenny himself.

Malcolm Byrne had sought a countywide ban on the burning of smoky fuels at a meeting of Wexford County Council early this year because of the health and environmental risks but now he believes that such a measure will be inadequate and that there is a requirement that Governments North and South of the border move to only permit the burning of smokeless fuels. It is estimated that over 1,200 people die annually from exposure to excessive particulate matter, particularly lung cancer and respiratory disease. It also contributes to cardiovascular disease. Malcolm met with Stafford Fuels in Co. Wexford who are moving toward smokeless and cleaner fuels and shares their concern that a Countywide ban on smoky coal use would be ineffective as people could still

Poor air quality is partially responsible for asthma and other respiratory diseases as well as various cancers, especially lung cancer. The right to clean air is essential" He added that policy measures would have to be put in place to address potential issues of fuel poverty. "Currently, smokeless coals are slightly more expensive than smoky coals, even though they are far more efficient and give off more heat. We need to ensure that people can still heat their homes in an environmentally friendly way."

It really is great to reach an All Ireland final and our Under 21 lads did us proud in Thurles on Saturday evening brushing aside Anrtim. It was a one sided affair but that matters nothing because the important thing is that we won and we are in the AllIreland. Forget all this talk about poor game, terrible match and all that rubbish, the lads could only beat what was put in front of them and that’s what they did. I know it might have been better if

EXTRA

they had a tougher test to prepare them for the final but they hadn’t and that’s that. The under 21s are in the final, the place they wanted to be since the start of the season so their major objective has been achieved. Now ,of course, they want to win the title and I think they are capable of doing that. However, they face a tough challenge because Limerick, their opponents in the final, look to be a well drilled side. The Shannon siders will go in as favourites but that does

not really matter. Wexford will have a big say on the day and we have the quality and experience to beat any team when everything clicks together. So let’s go and do it and once again well done to the boys and everyone associated with the team and remember we are all behind you and maybe I should tip Limerick to win because that should be worth an extra man to Wexford on the day given my record this year. Making excuses for terrorism in the West Despite our natural fear of the unknown, it’s usually your own tribe that’s the most dangerous. Muslim terrorism is a serious problem, no doubt, but unless you live in the Middle East, you are unlikely to be killed by ISIS or any other group of that ilk. Recent events make it seem to me, that far right terrorism here in the west is on the rise, but we are ignoring it, by pretending that “mental illness” is the sole cause of these crimes. When a Muslim commits a terrorist act, we have no problem condemning how they have used Islam to justify murders, and rightly so. But when a white person commits a terrorist act such as the recent shooting of 9 people in South Carolina by white supremacist, Dylan Storm Roof, a different approach is taken.

We deflect blame and dodge collective responsibility, blame mental illness and downplay the ideology behind the act, because we want to preserve the myth that western culture is pure and superior to all others. We refuse to take a long, hard, and honest look at the widespread beliefs in our society that lead to such acts, because we would rather be comfortable than aware. Muslims are constantly asked to openly condemn ISIS, but since the vast majority of westerners don’t openly condemn hate crimes and police brutality, we are nothing but hypocrites, wilfully blind to the evil at the heart of our culture. But like I said earlier, this act isn’t isolated. The Charleston Church Shooting, 9 people killed, June 17, 2015. Cinema Shooting In

Layfayette, Louisiana, 2 people killed, July 23, 2015. The perpetrator was John Russell Hauser, who attacked the screening of “Trainwreck”, a film by feminist comedian, Amy Schumer, motivated by his Fanatical hatred of Feminism. Sandra Bland, found dead in her cell in Waller County Jail in Texas, July 13, 2015. Arrested for a minor traffic infraction, the official stance of the police is that she committed suicide by hanging herself in her cell after 3 days there, due to a (confirmed) history of depression. However since footage of her arrest and the nature of the behaviour of her arresting officer has come out, many suspect foul play and mistreatment by the police could have caused her suicide, or even that she was murdered by the police and this could be an

attempted cover up. I’d advise anyone reading this to look up the Sandra Bland case and come to their own conclusions. These have all just occurred in the past few months. We can’t forget the murder of 6 people by Elliot Rodger last year either, which was motivated by his hatred of women. For a society that is supposedly constantly progressing, we are seeing the biggest backlash towards women and minorities in quite some time. In America, the number of white supremacist groups has increased 602 to 930 in the past 15 years, with many citing a backlash to the election of Obama as a possible reason for this increase. The FBI released a report back in 2006, warning of how white supremacists were attempting to infiltrate police departments

throughout America, which seems like a preemptive warning in light of all the recent high profile police brutality cases. You may have noticed that every single example I have given so far is American. You may think it could never happen here in Europe. While it is true that America has a uniquely gun saturated culture, the single largest act of far right terrorism in recent years happened in Norway, where Anders Brevik shot dead 69 people, motivated by his hatred of people whose policies were Pro-Muslim immigration. If

it can happen there, it can happen here. A bad economic climate often leads to bad decisions by the populace as a whole. Every Fascist, or on the opposite end of the political spectrum, Communist government can credit their rise to power from such an atmosphere. Hitler, Mussolini, and General Franco in Spain all came to power in the same decade. While we are nowhere near such a situation now, any overall drift of the general populace towards the far right, however small, is disastrous for us all.

Fluff the rice, discard the cinnamon stick and set aside to cool. Toss the prawn with half of the ginger, 1 tablespoon of the sake, the vinegar and pepper flakes in a medium bowl. Let marinate 10 to 15 minutes. Mist a large nonstick skillet with low cal spray and heat over mediumhigh heat until very hot. Add back the prawn, eggs and vegetables along with the remaining 1 tablespoon sake and soy sauce and toss well to combine. Remove from the heat and top with the sliced scallions. Political Notebook

1 Peter St.Wexford

FF and FG struggle to cope with the problem of women In politics August 2015 has not been a time for resting on the beach (even if the weather had been sunny) or taking a long break in foreign parts, as the countdown to the general election begins in earnest. Rarely has there been such uncertainty about an election in Co. Wexford just six months out from polling day. In the past people would be fairly certain of the destination of maybe four seats with just a bit of debate over where the final seat would go. This time around there isn’t even certainly about which names will actually get to the ballot paper but a fair bit of that uncertainty should be sorted out before the end of September by which time both Fine Gael and Fianna Fail will have their selection conventions out of the way. Fine Gael has been acting a bit like a bachelor farmer in a country ballroom in the 1950s since Liam Twomey announced he was standing down. They are desperate to find a woman--------any woman. It’s not actually that the party feels that a woman on the ticket would boost their electoral chances in any way--------it’s all about money. There are gender quotas in play for this election and if a

party does not reach its required quota of females then there are financials consequences. So finding a woman to stand alongside Paul Kehoe and Michael D’Arcy on the ticket would be very helpful. But like those ladies in the ballrooms of romance years ago the women FG have been attempting to court are playing a little hard to get. The men have not been quite so shy with councillors Jim Moore and Willie Fitzharris already putting themselves forward without any courting at all. The problem for FG is that they would be better with no one than a third man. If it’s an all male three person ticket in Wexford then it will only put more pressure on the party to find females in other constituencies so if a woman cannot be found it might be better to run just two candidates. It would make financial sense and would almost certainly have no electoral consequences. Indeed there is a school of thought which suggests that the party’s best chance of retaining two seats is to run just two candidates. When HQ staff get back from their holidays Wexford will be top of their agenda, it seems, but for the moment no

final decisions have been taken and it would come as no surprise if Kehoe and D’Arcy were the only two candidates. It will finally be make your mind up time for Fianna Fail next month as well and again there are no final decisions taken on candidate numbers here either. John Browne is still giving HQ and the local organisation a bit of a run around in terms of his intentions even if very few believe he will actually run. John has been making much play of the influence his medical Consultant will have on his final decision and one rather frustrated wannabee candidate commented recently that perhaps the Consultant should stand because he seemed to have more influence in the party locally than anyone else at the moment. But the mystery will end soon with a likely announcement that John is bringing the curtain down on his 33 year Dail career and that should make way for his son James to get his place on the ticker but Barbara Ann Murphy will do everything in her power to bring a bit of gender equality to the party. Fianna Fail has a real problem with women and could pay a price if more females are not found for

The state of the Health Service will undoubtedly be an issue at the general election which is now not more than six months away. There is no argument that the problems in the service are deep rooted and despite popular myths it is not always the case that once people actually get into the system that they are very happy with their experiences. Progress that had been expected, indeed promised, by this current government has not been achieved but that should really not come as any great surprise given the state of the national finances over the past few years. The real mystery is how the system was allowed to meander along as one ballooning mess during the Celtic Tiger years when Fianna Fail and the Progressive Democrats were in charge. That was a time when the money was available to achieve serious reforms and improvements in the service. Instead money was thrown at the problem with no analysis of how it was spent. It is, of course, true to say that progress was made in relation to the treatment of some serious illnesses and that has to be welcomed but the overall service was allowed to become one bloated mess. There has been a lot of

condescending comments about recent advances in relation to primary care with free GP visits now available for the under 6s and the over 70s. There has been criticisms of these moves, with some people saying the free access should be provide to those who are very ill in the first instance, regardless of their age. In an ideal world you would probably do that but the health service operates in anything but an ideal world and any free scheme based on anything but clear cut-offs has in the past proven to be very difficult to administer . However, despite its shortcomings, the plan now being rolled out may eventually get us to a better place in the health service. Treating people in the community is far more cost effective and efficient than having dozens of people queuing up at A&E departments with relatively minor problems, often getting in the way of people who are seriously ill. Providing free access to GPs should not only free up these A&E departments but also encourage people to take earlier preventative action when health problems arise. On a recent visit to Scotland I was struck by the difference in primary care provision between there and Ireland. I was forced to attend

a medical centre during my visit. The first thing which struck me was the fact that I could actually get an appointment for the early afternoon on the day I made the enquiry. But the real difference was to emerge later. Following the consultation I asked if I should pay the doctor directly or settle the account at reception only to be told that in Scotland you don’t pay for things like that. I was provided with two prescriptions which I presented at the Boots Pharmacy next door. Ten minutes later the assistant handed me quite a large bag full of medication and waved me goodbye. The whole episode cost nothing. In Ireland it would have set me back at least €150. If it’s a model which works by keeping people out of hospital then it certainly is something which we as a nation should look at. I know GPs will scream that if people are provided with fee access then they will have to be resourced and of course that is true. But the Scottish example does show that it is possible to provide good quality primary health care for free to the entire population. It seems to me that it is a road this country should try to travel as rapidly as possible.

Media’s double standards add to pain or grieving families Newspapers are regularly criticised for the manner in which they intrude into private grief, often making things even more difficult for families who have to cope with a terrible loss. Indeed it is not just newspapers, but the media in general, which can be guilty of appalling bad judgement when covering tragic stories. I will never understand, for example, why any reporter would go to the scene of a tragedy and seek out neighbours to ask them for their reaction to the situation. In the first instance, even in normal circumstances, these people would be anxious about appearing on television, but in the context of trying to deal with a tragedy involving one of their

neighbours the tactic of sticking a microphone in front of them and putting them under pressure to say something is little short of abuse. That lack of sensitivity in dealing with tragedies was once the trademark of the tabloid (redtop) press when sensational headlines delivered circulation and at the end of the day that was all that mattered to them. However, over the years the virus has spread affecting so called ‘quality’ media and even local publications. The Press Council and its Code of Ethics has a lot to say about dealing sensitively with people at times of tragedy. However, it seems to have little impact. In particular the splashing of tragic cases of suicide

across front pages in a sensationalist manner seems to me to be an appalling way for newspapers to seek to sell copies. There can really be no justification for intruding into the private grief of a family in this way. It is particularly interesting that the main shareholder in many of the papers who conduct themselves in this manner and who are regularly guilty of trampling over the private grief and heartache of families is himself a regular visitor to the courts armed with teams of high powered lawyers attempting to prevent other newspapers and media outlets from writing anything about him which he considers private or personal.

Paddy and Colman were shrewd businessmen There were many deaths around the county during the month of August and I offer my sympathy to all those who suffered a loss during the month. I will, however, mention two by name. Colman Doyle, the well known Wexford businessman, passed away over the August holiday weekend, following a short illness. It is not overstating the fact to say that Coleman was an institution in Wexford town. At one stage he seemed to own the entire South Main Street with different shops selling everything from rabbits to nails and high end furniture. My late father had a saying which was very apt ‘If Colman Doyle hasn’t got it it’s not to be got’, he’d say and it was a very accurate summing up of the man and what he offered in Wexford. One of my last meetings with him was when he was trying to make a delivery to a house near my home, or at least that’s where Colman thought it was. But I had never heard of the name he had for the

dwelling so I consulted a much more knowledgeable neighbour who failed to throw any light on the mystery either. ‘Are you living here or only visiting’ quipped Colman before continuing his search. The following week I bumped into him and was keen to discover if he had solved the mystery. ‘Oh yes it was only own the road’ he smiled knowingly and left the address a mystery to me. To his sister Collette and all those who mourn him I extend deepest sympathy. The death also occurred of Paddy Kelly who was the manager o the old Ambassador Supermarket in Gorey in the 1970s and 80s. It was situated on the outskirts of the town just before the Railway Bridge on the Dublin Road. Paddy was a meticulous manager who had learned his trade with Sainsbury’s in the UK and he brought exacting management practices back to Ireland with him. He demanded the best for his customers and when he didn’t

get it he was not slow to make his views known to the delivery man (or his helper) I was one of those helpers in the late 70s and far from being annoyed (although I was often that as well) I greatly admired Paddy for the very high standards which he set. Later when he retired to Wexford town I got to know him on much more even terms and it was always a pleasure for me to secure All Ireland tickets for him because I knew he appreciated them so much. He liked nothing better than to be able to boast that he could get any number of tickets for a game, even if in reality he was often really lucky to have two. He would be the first to admit that he never deliberately set out to win any popularity stakes but he was a very kind and generous man and the Walsh household feasted on turkeys which he personally delivered to the door, the day before Christmas Eve, for many years.

Grads and College herald the end of Summer You really know that summer is coming to a close when the Leaving Cert results are announced and the Grad season starts. I’m not sure there was always a ‘Grad’ season but there certainly is now and it rightly takes place over the ten days after the results have been announced and the Third Level Offers have been made public. The students really let themselves go and they deserve their night of fun. Indeed it often extends right up to lunchtime the next day. In this issue we have a sample of the style from the various Grads around the county but as usual there was one couple who stood out

Andrew O Keeffe and Clare Somers make their way to the St. Peters Grad from the crowd. This year it was Andrew O’Keeffe and Claire Somers (pictured) who arrived by

tractor to the St. Peter’s Collage Grad on Monday night.

Builder paid dearly for a bad job Disputes between builders and their clients are a common occurrence with the quality of the work often a major issue between the parties and the arguments can get quite heated on occasions. But things went a bit further than usual in Margate in the UK recently when a couple refused to pay the

builder for his work claiming it was a sham. He retaliated by going back to the house and wrecking it. But it didn’t stop there. The couple, Robert Symons and Jenny Turnell met up with the builder. Jeff King some time later and literally attempted to murder him. They pinned him against a wall with their van,

then assaulted him and stabbed him in the neck with a screwdriver The builder has already been prosecuted for criminal damage to the house and the couple are now on trial for attempted murder. I’d say all parties are sorry they ever decided to renovate the house in the first place.

• Do arrive on time • Show good manners – open doors, if she looks nice, tell her. Don’t go overboard. • Be prepared. First impressions count a lot. Get your hair cut, maybe invest in a new outfit. Check your teeth and nails are presentable. Invest in a deodorant/aftershave – women like a man who smells good. • Keep it casual – drinks are

fine for a first date. • Eyes in front – when you are on a date with someone they should be the centre of attention. Ask them about themselves, pay attention to their answers. Don’t try sneaky looks at your watch/phone/blonde at the bar – they will see that. • Do offer to pay, it won’t do any harm to pay, or at least offer. • Never talk about previous relationships, the date is not a counselling session! • Don’t get too serious or too casual. • Don’t be negative. • Be funy, make someone laugh. • Why not try something different/go somewhere new . • Don’t act like a needy person and do not settle (hold out for the one who is right for you). The most important thing of all is to be yourself and remember to smile. Always keep

this idea in the forefront of your mind – you are not trying to find out if the person you are on the date with accepts you. You are trying to figure out if you accept them! Should you decide to not continue with the person you had the date with, always communicate this with them. All it takes is a quick phone call or text simply saying “It was lovely meeting you, but I won’t be going any further with it”. Dropping communication is NOT the way to let the person know and is hurtful and immature. Rusty McCarthy, Friday, August 28, The Sky & The Ground, 9 p.m. It's almost too good to be true! Kevin is supremely gifted and dedicated drummer. He’s heavily focused on Jazz yet soaks up other world grooves like a sponge. He took to Blues shuffles and funk grooves like a duck to water and along with talented bassist Steve Tierney we've gigged around Ireland over

the last 5 years,” he says. Having been a songwriting partner of Mary Margaret O’Hara, McCarthy has also shared stages with artists of the stature of Lou Reed, Sting, Marianne Faithful, Steve Earle, Elvis Costello and The Blues Brothers. As the award ceremony draws nearer, nicotine cravings, apprehension and scrapbooks dominate

Maisie's temporary surroundings as the ghosts of memories she would rather forget start to reemerge. Introduction Finally we’re back from our long break away. As expected, August has been super busy for us both. Between grads, parties, end of summer balls and our day jobs, we haven’t had a second to ourselves all month. We’re seriously looking forward to the summer being over and getting back to reality. We are enjoying the

20

small bit of sunshine once a week and creeping on everyone’s grads though! Getting loads and loads of questions about our Junior Cert results night this year because usually we’d have something up by now. All we can say at the moment is that there’s something in the works, so don’t worry!

TUNE OF THE WEEK #1 Andrew Berry – Me & You Local singer/songwriter Andrew who is taking huge strides when it comes to music has recently recorded his first song and it’s an absolute belter which has racked up over 1,000 views on social media. Andrew is constantly climbing the ladder in the music industry and his unique sound and voice will certainly lead to him climbing to the top of that ladder.

Yik Yak Rot Anyone on Facebook a few years ago should remember phases like AskFM or Spillit which eventually ended up dying out and everyone was happy again. Well, what started out as a new fun app for college students could well be headed in the same direction as the others. Yik Yak is relatively new to Ireland and definitely to Wexford. It’s basically an app that allows people to post anonymously for anyone in a 5 mile radius to see. I’ve been on it about a year now and it’s a right laugh up in Dublin where there are loads of people on it and everyone’s e using it properly. Whether it’s asking anonymous questions and actually getting honest answers, trying to guess which one of your friends put something up and getting something relevant trending, it can be brilliant! Of course it comes to Wexford and all the anonymous name calling and abuse starts . I downloaded it again the other day because I heard people were starting to use it down here. I was delighted to hear of people starting to get on board until I actually went in and saw some of the rot people were putting up! It’s basically turned into a platform for people to abuse others when they wouldn’t say it to their faces. *Uninstalls* If you get your laughs from abusing someone anonymously, you should probably sit down have a think for yourself. If you’re going to use the app, use it properly, otherwise get off it and go play with traffic. Sooouund!

#2 Sigala – Easy Love No doubt you’ve heard this song a million times in the last few weeks. If you don’t recognise the name, it’s the Jackson 5 remix that Beat have had on replay for the last month. Absolute cracker of a summer tune. Nothing worse than a bad remix of your favourite songs, but this one definitely didn’t disappoint. It’s also been the most Shazam’d track across the South East this summer.

USELESS FACT OF THE WEEK In Finland phone throwing is an official sport. They actually have competitions to see who can throw a phone the furthest!! Hahahaha! Might head over and see how far I can lob this iPhone. Battery would probably be dead before it hit the floor!

Hot – Megan Fox-

Not – Kylie Jenner

Good news lads!!! Megan Fox is now single so if you fancy your chances why not give her a tweet or her management team an e-mail, myself personally I have sent around 67 messages but she must be busy having lunch or something‌.

Professional attention seeker Kylie Jenner just doesn’t seem to leave the limelight these days and the recently turned 18 year old could be following her sisters footsteps as she embarks on a career in porn‌. Well she has had a 10 million dollar offer and supposedly she’s considering it ‌ this family would do anything for attention‌. From her sisters to her Dad, it just gets worse and worse. Sick of seeing these in the news 24/7.

Well folks here we are at the end of the championship season and whatever about how good or bad it was for various counties I know it was not a good season for me. In fact many of you are probably already saying ‘what does he know about hurling’ given that I tipped Tipp to land the All-Ireland crown from way back. Hands up I got it wrong but I have to say that Galway surprised me when they dumped my selection out of the contest at the semi final stage. To be fair it was one of the games of the year and one that will live in the memory for a long time to come. Tipp were hot favourites to win but Galway had other ideas and the manner in which they took on their opponents could be an example for other teams in the future. They showed great spirit, guts and a never say die attitude which is vital if you are to overcome more fancied opponents in any game. Their prize for all the effort is a final meeting with Kilkenny and I really cannot see them repeating their Tipperary success against the Cats. It would be great for hurling if Galway could land the crown and I think hurling people everywhere (except Kilkenny) will be shouting them on, but I just cannot see Kilkenny losing (knowing my luck this year that is probably a good boost for Galway)

Kilkenny even have the advantage of having beaten the westerners in the Leinster final and it will take a mighty effort from Galway to pull this one off. However, they showed against Tipperary what they are capable of and if they can up their performance for a second game in a row and really take the game to Kilkenny then I suppose anything could happen and if they do manage to take Liam McCarthy back to the West there will be some celebration. Whatever happens Galway have been the team of the year in this year’s championship and they have really improved as they year has gone on and they are now fully entitled to their place at the top table of hurling. Turning briefly to the local championship I expect Oulart/The Ballagh, St. Annes, The Harries and Shels to battle it out in the semifinals but there could be a surprise, but then what would I know? Our camogie ladies went down to a good Galway team but they were really robbed y the referee who played six and a half minutes of extra time when the board showed just four minutes. Galway scored their winning point when the game should have been over. Hard luck girls you were robbed. Enjoy the All Ireland!
