Carthy declares and Wallace faces jail The battle for Co. Wexford’s five seats in the next Dail intensified this week with the announcement by the local election poll topping Mayor of Wexford, Ger Carthy, that he would contest the election and news that that the gender balance search by Fine Gael and Fianna Fail had reached a successful conclusion with two women who have no previous
electoral experience all set to be added to the party tickets alongside the previously selected experienced male candidates. Mayor Carthy’s announcement had been anticipated for some time although as the election date grew closer there were some who doubted he would take the plunge. He is seen as a strong
contender by political opponents given his performance in last year’s local elections when he secured the second highest vote in the county and the fact that he has secured a high profile in the Wexford urban area over the past six months since becoming Mayor of the Borough District. Cllr Carthy has also been an Officer of the County GAA Board for several years and was
closely associated with the development of the Centre of Excellence in Ferns. Carthy’s announcement came in a week when outgoing Independent TD for Wexford, Mick Wallace, was back in the headlines over his law-breaking activities in Shannon Airport. Deputy Wallace has not paid the fines imposed by a court in Ennis following his criminal

conviction and he could face thirty days in prison as a result of his announcement that he will not pay the fine and his rejection of the decision of the court. saying they had brought honour to their town and district. Cllr. Kavanagh said success at national level was not achieved without great effort and it was fitting that the effort and achievement of all those involved by recognised in an official way. The recipients included trio David Manley,

News Cost of dying set to increase in Wexford and New Ross The cost of burial plots in Wexford’s Crosstown Cemetery and in St Stephen’s Cemetery, New Ross could more than double in 2016 as the Co. Council looks to bring uniformity to charges in its burial grounds around the county. Fianna Fail councillor Barbara Ann Murphy drew attention to the fact that the cost of purchasing a grave in Crosstown was less than half the fee imposed in other cemeteries and she said there should be uniformity across the county.
Until last year Crosstown was run by the old Wexford Borough Council but with the abolition of the old authority all the cemeteries which are not parish owned are now run by the Co. Council. The cost of purchasing a grave space in Crosstown is just €400, while a single plot in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, New Ross, costs €500. However, in all other local authority cemeteries in the county a single grave space costs €1,000. Director of Services John Carley acknowledged that there
was an issue with the cost of burial plots and a policy would be brought forward in the second quarter of next year. The Council is unlikely to reduce the rates charged in any cemeteries so the policy will likely see a major jump in the cost of being buried in Wexford and New Ross. The local authority charges compare very favourably with the fees in parish owned cemeteries, particularly those close to Wexford town where it can cost up to €2,000 for a grave space.

Council launches initiative for the re-homing of dogs Wexford Co. Council has issued a pre-Christmas warning about the responsibilities associated with owning a dog and reminding people of the costs involved with the car of a pet . From 1st September 2015 all pups are legally required to be microchipped under the Microchipping of Dogs Regulations 2015. The legislation has been introduced by the Minister for Agriculture Food and the Marine. All adult dogs must be microchipped by 31st March 2016 (a form of I.D. and a recent utility bill is required. Average cost €25-€40) .The regulations provide for significant penalties for noncompliance. Wexford County Council provides Pound Kennels under contract to PetsFirst at Tomanoole, Ballycarney, Enniscorthy, where stray and unwanted dogs, collected by the Council’s Dog Warden, are cared for until reclaimed or re-homed. They Council works with WSPCA, NWSPCA, Dogs Trust and other animal welfare organisations to try and re-home stray & unwanted dogs. Friendly, healthy dogs of all breeds are available from the Pound Kennels (053 9388339) that would make suitable pets for genuine households seeking a rescue dog. With effect from this week all dogs re-homed from the PetsFirst Pound Kennels to genuine people seeking a pet, will be microchipped, health checked, vaccinated (1st & 2nd) and the new owner will receive a €50 voucher towards the cost of neutering or spaying the dog. All this for a nominal fee of €70. Follow up home checks will be carried out for some of the dogs to see how they are settling in. Wexford County Council reminds the public that they should very carefully consider the responsibility, commitment and financial implications involved before getting a puppy. Puppies grow into dogs and owning a dog is a long term commitment. Dogs require love, care maintenance and suitable facilities.

Carthy declares and says he wants to be a ‘positive’ Independent TD What could well be one of the final pieces of the preelection jig-saw in Co. Wexford was put in place this week when Independent Councillor and Mayor of Wexford Borough District Ger Carthy announced that he would contest the poll. Speculation about his intentions had been doing the rounds for months and the odds had always favoured a positive decision by the son of former long serving councillor Leo Carthy. However, until he finally made his declaration there were still doubts in some quarters about his intentions. The argument being advanced was clear. Being a serious general election candidate costs a lot of money and with Mick Wallace riding high on the independent vote would a second independent candidate be driving forward into the wilderness? This week Carthy said he was persuaded to go after months of consideration by the amount of support and encouragement he had received from the public. ‘Particularly since becoming Mayor I have been asked about standing and encouraged to stand I’d say every single day’ He had postponed making any final decision until after the birth of his third child in October and following meetings with his closest supports and family he decided to put his name forward.

representation. ‘That is certainly what people have been telling me’ If elected don’t expect to see Carthy smashing his way into Shannon Airport to take on the Americans. ‘If I am lucky enough to be elected my focus will be on Co. Wexford and making this county a better place for everyone.’ He says he will be positive in supporting a ‘good government, which is good for Wexford’

Investment in education to deal with a crisis in relation to school placers in a number of areas of the county and a targeted plan to dramatically improve the number of young Wexford people who complete Third Level together with the continued
development of Wexford General hospital, investment in tourism initiatives and support for rural communities are top of a long list of his priorities. Carthy says he wants to be a ‘positive’ independent. ‘If elected I want to get things done for Wexford, I want to make a difference for the county as a whole and to make a difference to the lives of ordinary people. You can only do that by playing a constructive role for your county and its people and that is what I want to do’ While many traditionalists are pretty fixed in their minds in terms of the outcome of the election in Wexford and cannot foresee a further ‘earthquake’ in the county with the election of another independent, the more considered observers are slow to write off Carthy. The weakness of Fianna Fail in Wexford town and South Wexford------as evidenced by the party’s showing in the area in last year’s local elections--------and Liam Twomey’s decision to opt out of politics have certainly left a space which Carthy is well positioned to fill. He would also expect to get the support of some people who for a variety of reasons are disillusioned with Brendan Howlin after five years of austerity. Whether or not these parts add up to a Dail seat remains to be seen but they certainly provide the platform from which Carthy can launch himself as a credible contender. Carthy’s declaration brings the number of candidates contesting the election to fourteen and that figure seems set to rise further. Voting is expected to take place in eighty six days’ time
Getting rid of a mattress Is more expensive than buying a new one One of the big problems across rural Wexford involves roadside dumping of a variety of rubbish, particularly furniture and mattresses. There had been puzzlement about why some many beds were being left on the roadside but the answer
may just have been found. It seems its costs €120 to have a mattress taken in at the Holmestown Recycling centre. That’s as much if not more than some mattresses would cost so it’s not surprising that people are resultant to take them for recycling.
The mystery was solved by Robbie Ireton who provided members of the Co. Council with details of the charge at last week’s Budget meeting. Why is it so expensive? Well it seems there is a lot of work involved in breaking up the mattress and taking out the springs. So now you know.

GER WALSH Brooklyn, an avalanche of good publicity and contentment for Paddy all for €12,000 Sometimes when you hear something for the first time you make an instant decision about it. I must say that was the case with me when I first heard discussions about bringing the premier of Brooklyn to Enniscorthy Here they were talking about bringing the premier of a film to a town which didn’t even have a cinema. Now that seemed to me to be a pretty fundament al problem at the time and if I am to be honest I thought it was a bit of a pipe dream. I can say that now that the dust has safely settled on the whole thing and my goodness was it a success or what. I say even in their wildest dreams Padraig O’Gorman, David Minogue and their team could not have imagined the scale of what they were about to deliver
to Enniscorthy. You must remember they were not doing this because they wanted to have a first look at what the film was like, or to see what locals they could recognise on screen, although that was an added bonus. No, this was all about delivering publicity and promotion to Enniscorthy. It was about putting Enniscorthy on the national and international stage and associating it in the public mind with glamour, glitz and big Hollywood movies. And did they deliver. For a few days you couldn’t turn on a radio station, a TV channel, open a newspaper read magazine or view any prominent news or entertainment web site without an image of Enniscorthy lashing up.
There were radio talk shows about Enniscorthy, tea time TV shows, news reports and even a special breakfast television programme broadcast live from the banks of the Slaney. That Breakfast TV programme featured Corner Boy and I spotted the business man, journalist, broadcaster and man about town, Jimmy Gahan signing along and clapping enthusiastically, and that was even before he had his breakfast. For that alone bringing the Premier to the town was probably worth it. But on a serious note it has to be said that genuinely in this case money could not have bought the publicity which this effort brought to Enniscorthy. It was a truly a fabulous promotion for the town and apart from the Council officials and the local business
community who played such a part organising the whole thing, the person who was pivotal to the whole thing was author Colm Toibin. And on the subject of money as I said money could not have bought the publicity and promotion but it is worth pointing out that the total net cost of the entire thing was €12,000. It would probably have been worth spending that some alone for the joy which the whole thing appears to have brought local Council Chairman Paddy Kavanagh. He told his colleagues that it was one of the greatest events he was every involved with. And he said that as he rested in his rocking chair in his twilight years it would be one of the things he would reflect on with contentment. AAAH, isn’t that nice.
NAMA protesters had a very good editor There has been a lot of talk about that video doing the rounds on the internet of the scene at the NAMA auction in Gorey recently which seemed to show a Garda taking what some might suggest was a bit over the top action against one of the protestors, Some of those who were there suggest that the video actually was brilliantly edited to convey a one sided impression against the Gardai and they are pretty adamant about that. So good was the editing that others have suggested that the person involved should be employed by Vincent Browne to edit his People’s Debate. While you would have expected the big talking point about the programme in Wexford to
have been about some of the issues it was the quality of the editing, indeed lack of editing, which many people have been talking about. It was particularly noticeable towards the end of the programme when a mobile phone went off and Vincent halted proceedings and got Mick Wallace to start again and repeat what he was saying. On the programme the original comments, the mobile phone and the new comments were all shown, now that would never happen at an anti NAMA protest.

The
Chainsaws at dawn in Bunclody It could be a case of chainsaws drawn at Dawn in Bunclody or more particularly outside the local cemetery and two local female public representatives do battle about what is right for the local graveyard. Councillor Codd Nolan was a funeral in the cemetery recently when she was approached by a number of those present complaining about the effect which the trees were having on the headstones.
As is the case in many graveyards around the county the green pines do terrible damage to the colour of the headstones and the funeral goers were wondering if Kathleen could do something about the problem. The cemetery is run by the Co. Council and good public representatives that she is Kathleen decided to raise the matter at the next meeting of the local Municipal District Council. The best thing to do
might be to cut the trees down entirely particularly as one of them had been damaged in the storm the previous evening, she suggested. The had a similar problem in Castledockrell which had been resolved when the trees were removed, she told her colleagues But Barbara Ann Murphy, who is very protective of everything Bunclody, was having none of it. The trees involved were beautiful
Horse Chestnuts and her parents were buried underneath them and she would not want them removed. Indeed, she went further suggesting that there would be a lot of opposition in Bunclody to any idea that they should be cut down. It think the compromise will be a good trimming back of the trees with Kathleen at the top of a ladder chainsaw in hand while Barbara Ann keeps a close watch from ground level.

John Dunne has been in touch to ensure that I discharge my responsibilities in relation to the Manchester United Official Supporters Club Wexford Christmas Draw 2015.

Chronicle December 3, 2015 A 1916 Christmas Gift Next year is going to be a really big year for celebrations with the centenary of 1916 and nowhere will those celebrations be greater (with the exception of Dublin I suppose) than in Co. Wexford. I assume a lot of people will want to get something with a 1916 theme as part of their Christmas Gift selection and Martin’s Jewellers in Wexford town have come up with a really smashing idea which should prove a hit with a lot of people looking for something appropriate to the year we are about to celebrate. Kevin and Brian Martin who operate at Rowe Street in Wexford have crafted 16 gold pins, 916 pins in Silver and about 1,916 in base metal with a design that incorporates symbols of the
Rinsing including the bow of the gun-running ship Asgard and a Mauser 1871 rifle set against the burning GPO in Dublin. The Martins wanted to do something different to mark the centenary and I think they have hit on a winner. We are talking about a limited edition here and Kevin explains that to get the correct level of detailing in the pin a special dye had been fabricated of a standard used for coins and medals and this will be broken up, destroyed, eliminated as soon as all the pins have been made The pins were officially launched by Mayor Ger Carthy back in the summer but they are really aimed at the Christmas Market and those who wanted to celebrate the centenary in style next year.

Fianna Fail do the Haka as Council Budget is steered through on the Dempsey Express ‘Are you doing the Haka?’, asked Fine Gael councillor John Hegarty as the Fianna Fail grouping on Wexford Co. Council bonded together, scrum like, at the end of the Chamber prior to the start of the annual budget meeting. Malcolm Byrne feared he was being left out of this big group hug and rushed across to his colleagues who were now bonding so closely that they could really ‘share the feeling’. Perhaps they were steeling themselves for the challenges ahead, like having to impose increased commercial rates on hard pressed traders in three of the county’s towns as part of the rates equalisation process. Or maybe they were just getting into the right headspace for the long meeting ahead. If that was the case they need not have bothered because Chairman Tony Dempsey, who did not join his colleagues for the pre meeting bonding session, was preparing to run the meeting with the speed and single mindedness of a Formula One
driver needing just one final win to secure the championship. There would be no break for tea, no line by line questioning of the budget detail and councillors would be slapped down if they attempted to get in the way of the Dempsey Express. This train was leaving the station and it was a nostopping service. Ger Carthy received an early slap down when he attempted to raise a question. ‘Can you not hear down there’ enquired the Chairman, much to the irritation of Carthy whose position was vindicated by the Head of Finance Annette O’Neill with the words ‘the member is correct in the question he raises’ Cllr Fergie Kehoe didn’t fare quite as well. When he raised a question he was run over by the Dempsey bulldozer with the Chairman pointing out that the question had already been answered at a meeting that morning which councillor Kehoe had attended. Volunteers recognised at Civil Defence Awards Night More than 100 Civil Defence volunteers from all over Wexford were the recipients of training and long service awards recently at Wexford County Council’s Annual Civil Defence Awards Presentation Ceremony. The awards were presented following months of rigorous training by more than 100 male and female volunteers of Wexford Civil Defence. Training courses included water safety, rope use rescue operations, first aid, boat handling and search and rescue operations. These courses are specifically designed to equip the volunteers with essential health and safety and rescue skills to enable them to carry out their volunteer services and respond to the many emergency callouts they receive throughout the year. Wexford Civil Defence is a service of Wexford County Council. It is headed up by
the Civil Defence Officer who is a full time employee of the Council. As a national statutory volunteer organisation, the function of the Council’s Civil Defence Service is to provide a second line response to the Primary Response Agencies ie. an Garda Siochana, Health Service Executive and Local Authority. Wexford Civil Defence has

Santa overwhelmed as thousands throng Gorey’s Main Street for the start of Chrismtas Last year it was the town Sana almost forgot but there was no mistaking the determination of the Council and business community of Gorey to put that right in 2015 which is why they organised Santa to start his tour of Wexford in the North County town. They also spent months organising for this year and dug deep to find the money for spectacular new lights to ensure that the great man would never forget the importance of Gorey again. They had expected about
two and a half thousand people to turn out for the big lights switch on but one very experienced events' organiser put the figure on the night at more than three times that. For a time there was a fear that there would not be enough room for Santa to make his way up the Main Street but stewards hurriedly moved the crash barriers back to make more room for the thousands of parents and children who turned up on a very festive night in Gorey. But even as the crowds drifted back it was still s tight
squeeze for Santa’s sleigh as it slowly made its way towards Market House where, for several weeks, local children had been posting their Santa letters in a special post box.. The stewards worked desperately to keep a path clear as the screeching of the kids reached fever pitch and the piped words of ‘Santa is Coming to Town’ generated an electric atmosphere,. It may have been a late November night but there was no mistaking that as far as the people of North Wexford
were concerned this was the real start of Christmas. It had all begun more than an hour earlier with a puppet show outside the Market House to entertain the young families. Further along the street those who had rushed out without supper made their way to pack fast food outlets and outside Partridges they were doing a roaring trade with their on-street food and drink outlet. There was Reindeer Food on offer too and Carol Singers gathered at various locations on the street to add to the
festive atmosphere. At Council level they began talking about this night as far back as last March and there had been many discussions about the lights which cost €100,000 so there was great anticipation as the countdown began to the switch-on. Santa had to battle his way through the crowds to get to the switch and then as the chorus reached ONE it was FLASH as a wonderful display of lighting lit up Gorey as far as the eye could see.

Next year they’ll organise a stage, the crash barriers will be placed well back on the street, there will probably be even more entertainment and all the shops will be prepared for a really busy night because the switching on the lights and arrival of Santa is now a really big night in Gorey.

A more relaxed welcome for Santa in New Ross After all the excitement and the battling through the crowds in Gorey the previous night Santa must have welcomed the more relaxed atmosphere which prevailed in New Ross the following afternoon when he arrived for the lights’ switch on at the Tholsel in the town centre. A religious gentleman led the procession from the local Parish Church as a band created the atmosphere en route to the switch on point. Santa seemed to be enjoying himself and was probably relieved that here, unlike Gorey the crowds numbered in their hundreds rather than their thousands. This meant that he would not face the type of crush which almost rendered him footless on occasions in North
Wexford. Even so the man on the MC was anxous that people would move to where there was more space because they didn’t want anyone getting crushed. It’s just as well that he didn’t have to contend with the scene in Gorey. The more relaxed atmosphere meant that Santa had more time to greet children individually before it was time to switch on the lights. First there was the little matter of a speech from the Chairman of the local Municipal District Council, Michael Sheehan. A political speech delivered while children are waiting for Christmas Lights to be switched on can go down like a lead balloon but in fairness Sheehan judged the mood
perfectly, urged people to shop locally, stay safe, enjoy the festive season and then declared it was officially Christmas in New Ross. Then it was time for the lights, the best they’ve ever had in New Ross, by all accounts. Even though it was not quite dark when the switch was flicked the lights nevertheless looked very impressive, lighting up the streets in all directions from The Thosel. Santa’s next engagement was in the Drumbrody the following afternoon and right throughout December they have organised all sorts of attractions on Barrowside as they go all out to encourage shoppers to stay local this festive season.

Thousands turn out for Wexford Winterland launch Mayor Ger Carthy was on stage with Santa and Mrs Claus and he had to say a few words. In front of the stage on Wexfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quayfront were thousands of young children with their parents and grandparents all waiting for the lights to be switched on and to enjoy the entertainment. As the father of very young children Carthy himself was not about to ruin their night. It was a Happy Christmas Boys and Girls sort of speech, a few words about the Council supporting a great month of Christmas festivities in the town and then a quick side step to allow Santa take centre
stage and both then performed the lights switch on. Tthe entertainment resumed. Santa greeted as many children as he could and another great Christmas festival was underway in Wexford. Outside the opening of the Opera Festival it is now one of the biggest nights of the year in Wexford town which is why the action was moved from the Bullring to the quayside this year. The parade started at Selskar Square and made its way down the North Main Street where both sides of the street were lined with young
and old waiting to greet Santa. A big new attraction this year is the Santa Train which will be making its 3way around Wexford until the day before Christmas Eve and if the early interest and excitement is anything to go by it will be the big success story of Christmas 2015 in Wexford. The local Council is investing tens of thousands of euro into the events surrounding the festival as part of an economic initiative aimed at helping rebuild the retail sector following the harsh years of the recession.

Local Network Group continues growth and tops €600,000 in business transacted BNI - is short for Business Network International and the Menapia chapter of the networking group is based in Wexford town for the last ten years. This last year reflecting the rising economy, it too has seen significant growth to its current twenty five members and the group members passed referrals resulting in €600,000 of business. Such performance has seen it consistently rise to become one of the top five performing chapters in the country out of the thirty four chapters nationwide. The group has a breakfast meeting every Thursday morning at 7am to 9am in the Ferrycarrig Hotel and follows a structured meeting agenda
that is proven to lead to business for its members. The format allows that only one member is allowed from each profession, ensuring that all members actively work for each other, on the "Givers Gain" ethos of the organisation. Each member actively works to find referrals for each other - in essence giving each member a salesforce of 24 people. Mark Roper for Poetry Session

High Fashion at the Horse & Hound The Horse & Hound in Ballinaboola was the venue for the Cushintown National School Fashion Show last Tuesday night. The event was organised by the Parents Council was definitely a hit with the large crowd in attendance. On show on the night was a selection of winter wear from Lulus, Blossoms, Mr.H, Wallaces of Wellington Bridge, Bonita and finally Lady Melia. The clothes were expertly modelled by the staff and parents from Cushintown National School with the Principal, Ms Pauline Weatherhead being a big hit with the audience on the night. The fashion show was then followed with music
from the very talented, Sarah Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Brien, Diarmuid Murphy, Ciaran English, SineĂĄd Murphy and Rebecca Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Sullivan-Ryan, who are all past pupils of the school.
The night concluded with a disco with DJ Liam Sharkey at the decks. All monies raised on the night went to Cushintown National School and the
organisers would like to thank all involved for a very successful and enjoyable night. Martin Malone

And will Rudolph end up on the Naughty List when Santa finds out? Bang On Productions, in association with the National Opera House, present an original festive Christmas theatrical production, Rudey's Christmas Adventure, a seasonal show with a difference! Created especially for 3-8 year olds, participants join Rudey on an a magical adventure through the opera house, meandering on a
journey through the Christmas Tree Woods to help find Santa's sleigh with Rudey the Elf leading all the way. This show promises an exciting adventure, lots of giggles and laughs, new friends and Christmas magic. Bang on Productions is a new company based in Wexford Town comprised of three well-known local theatre and arts practitioners, Edward Millbourne McCarthy, Caoimhe Dunn and Dominic Palmer, who collectively wrote, designed, directed and are performing in the innovative and engaging piece, reflecting the remit of Bang
On Productions; to design, produce and create original work utilising their combined theatrical skills of puppetry, prop-making, youth-arts, writing and performance. Edward is a seasoned performer and theatre technician with an award winning background in street theatre and dance. Caoimhe is an artist, prop and model maker, puppeteer, puppet and mask maker. For the past couple of years Caoimhe has also worked as a prop maker for Wexford Festival Opera. Dominic is a director, performer, youth arts facilitator and playwright.
Bang On Productions are joined for this show by voice over artist and performer Gary Furlong, and costume maker Francis White. Both bring a wealth of experience to the group. Low cost loan scheme to combat Wexford Moneylenders - Howlin A new personal loan scheme that helps social welfare recipients is now available in two credit unions in Wexford. The move that has been welcomed by Deputy Brendan Howlin who said it will go a long way towards tackling local moneylenders, many of whom are known to target vulnerable households at this time of year. The 'It Makes Sense Loan' was launched last week and is available from New Ross Credit Union and Wexford Credit Union on Anne Street. Deputy Howlin said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is low-cost personal credit scheme is aimed at people in Wexford on social welfare who
may need access to borrowings at short notice but don't want to be penalised by high interest rates. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Access to low cost credit is often outside the reach of many families. This pilot scheme will help take families out of the arms of high cost moneylenders. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m glad that these two Credit Unions in Wexford will partake in the scheme because it will help combat local moneylenders who charge exorbitant rates. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The thinking behind the scheme is that it provides local, easily accessible and low-cost loans to those who need them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People can borrow from

It is open to social welfare recipients and they will be able to use the Household Budgeting Service run by An Post to manage repayments. It's the first Friday of the month and time again for Poetry at Cafe Fusion. This month, on Friday 4th December, Co. Waterford, poet Mark Roper is special guest at the poetry session. As usual the first half of the evening will feature an open mic session with local poets and readers and then Mark Roper will conclude the evening. For our open mic session we have asked poets and readers to read poems in traditional verse forms and we expect to hear sonnets, limericks, sestinas, ballads, haiku, villanelles and a whole lot more. There will be couplets and quatrains, rhyme and pattern, regular meter and iambic pentameter, all the
elements that most of us recognise as"real poetry". We know that people will bring examples of classic poems that we all know and love but we also look forward to hearing new poems in tradition forms. Our special guest Mark Roper has also promised at least one poem in a traditional form.
