’Abide With Me’ cleric celebrated in Taghmon The man who penned the words for the internationally famous hymn ‘Abide With Me’ which has been sung prior to the start of every FA Cup final since 1927 was remembered in Taghmon at the weekend, two hundred years after he served there as a curate. Henry Francis Lyte held a curacy in Taghmon parish in 1815 and 1816. He was a poet and gifted hymn writer and on Saturday evening a small ensemble from

the Loc Garman band joined the congregation in St. Munns Church to mark the 200th anniversary of his curacy. The service was led by Canon Arthur Minnion with the band providing the accompaniment for the members of the congregation who sang seven of Lyte’s most loved hymns at their Harvest Thanksgiving to mark the important milestone in the history of the Taghmon church.

Trocaire helped over two million people world- wide and this huge effort was made possible by people contributing in every single parish in the diocese.

A Fianna Fail pledge made twelve months ago to seek a ‘substantial’ reduction in the rate of Local Property Tax payable by householders in Co. Wexford was cast aside by the party when the Co. Council met to consider the tax rate for 2016.. Despite many Fianna Fail candidates promising a Property Tax cut before the last local elections and a clear signal a year ago that the party, which is the largest voting block on the Co. Council, would seek a big cut at this year’s estimates,, Fianna Fail councillors voted in block for no change in the tax rate last week. The vote represents a spectacular u-turn for the party just months before the general election. Only Sinn Fein and People Before Profit’s Deirdre Wadding supported cutting the tax last week when faced with the stark reality that any cuts would result in a reduction in service However, this was clear a year ago when Fianna fail councillors made their tax cut promise.

Sinn Fein’s Johnny Mythen who proposed a 15% cut in the rate of Property Tax said it was disappointing that Fianna Fail rowed back on their statement at last year’s budget meeting ‘to seek a significant decrease in local property tax in 2015’ Cllr Myrthen also lashed out at Fine Gael and Labour accusing government TDs of not serving the people of the county well on this issue. The Sinn Fein suggestion was to introduce a wealth tax, chase up commercial rates arrears of €11.5m and sell off some of the Council’s land bank. . At a special meeting of Wexford County Council the Council decided to retain the 2016 Local Property Tax (LPT) at 2015 levels by adopting a 0% variation amid concerns that any reduction in the LPT would lead to a reduction in existing service levels and impact negatively on the Council’s overall financial position. Following the introduction of the Local Property Tax in 2012, each local authority has a statutory power to increase or

decrease the rates of LPT by up to 15%. The decision by Wexford County to adopt a 0% variation was taken today as the Council commenced the process of considering the 2016 Annual Budget. Head of Finance at Wexford County Council Ms. Annette O’Neill presented a comprehensive report to the members setting out the various financial options and implications associated with possible decisions to increase or decrease Local Property Tax in the county. Speaking after the meeting, Ms. O’Neill said “The decision of the members to retain the rate of LPT at 2015 levels is a reasonable position for the Council to take. It is vital that existing service levels are, at the very least, maintained at current levels. Reducing the LPT would have directly impacted on the ability of the Council to do this. In making their decision the Members carefully considered all aspects of potential increases and decreases and their decision, I believe, was based on a need to strike a balance between the

impact on property owners and the overall financial impact on Council services.” In her presentation to the Members of Wexford County Council today, Ms. O’Neill pointed out that a reduction of 15% in LPT rates would reduce the Council’s income by €1.8m while the corresponding impact on 93% of the 62,800 registered property owners in County Wexford would have been a reduction of €0.91 per week or less. LPT income to Wexford County Council amounts to approximately €11.9m per annum, representing more than one-eighth of the Council’s total annual income. The decision by Wexford County Council to adopt a 0% variation in the Local Property Tax will now form the backdrop to the Council’s 2016 Budget preparations. The Budget will be prepared over the coming weeks and will be considered in detail by Members of the Council at a Special Meeting in November.

Frankenstein Bolts play local gig One of the most talked about acts on the local music scene local rock band, Frankenstein Bolts, play Wexford Arts Centre on Friday 16th October at 8.30pm Their very distinctive style was chosen earlier this year by Guinness to receive three days studio time anywhere in the country. That time was put to very good use as the band recorded the single. Hotpress magazine has also tipped the band as ‘one to watch’ in 2015. Best described as a ‘dreamPop/folktronica two piece’ the band was formed two years

ago and is composed of songwriter Justin Cullen and Dan Comerford. Having had some background in sound engineering Justin’s original idea was to keep Frankenstein Bolts as a home recording project to release songs online. However, after notable interest in the initial demos he decided create a full album, ‘Slow Season’ which was released in April last year. At the time he of that release Justin realised the need for a live band – the first incarnation of which included bass, guitar and drums played with backing synths. The

resulting national tour was a great success and earned Frankenstein Bolts a strong national following. The band also got regional airplay and good support from online indie stations. The opening track of the album ‘Sleeping Sacks’ was used by Vodafone as their hold music for the year. In the summer of 2014, with band members committed to many other projects, Justin began the search for a more permanent line-up and formed a working partnership with Dan Comerford (another Wexford songwriter) and duo

now have a set of very original songs which they perform using vocals, drum loops, harmonisers, synths, and effect-laden guitars. The recent studio time came as a result of the band being selected through the Guinness Amplify initiative and the judges of that also chose the band to take part in their ‘Live Stages’ series of gigs. ‘Up To The Root’ is the first of the singles to be released from those studio sessions with the second track due for release later in the year.

Warm welcome as Bunclody gets a boost There has been a warm welcome for the announcement that the Bunclody/Carrigduff area has been designated a Rural Economic Development Zone (REDZ) and has been allocated a grant of €50,000 to fund a programme of economic revival in the area Minister Paul Kehoe said it was great news and would help support local communities. ‘I feel strongly that rural communities know best themselves what they need and I hope that this pilot funding will provide much needed resources to communities in Bunclody to further the economic development of their areas. Cllr. Kathleen Codd Nolan, who sat on the committee that lobbied for this investment said: This is

very positive news for Bunclody, This investment is aimed at boosting employment, tackling rural isolation and helping communities to identify the issues as well as the solutions. The aim is to support communities to avail of opportunities to help themselves and their local areas’ The announcement followed a joint application to the Department of Environment by Wexford County Council and Carlow County Council. Rural Economic Development Zones (REDZ) acknowledge the historically strong economic relationships between rural towns and their surrounding hinterlands. The REDZ initiative supports communities to avail of

opportunities to help themselves and their local areas, using a community led approach to foster rural development and generate economic growth. REDZ acknowledges that rural communities know best what they require to boost economic growth within their own areas and this national pilot funding programme provides resources to a number of communities throughout Ireland to further the economic development of their respective areas. The Carrigduff/Bunclody project application consists of the development of a speciality food laboratory for the production of innovative food products linked to the highly fertile agricultural land in the Blackstairs area. The aim is

to support new entrants and existing speciality food producers in the region so that they can increase sales and employment opportunities in this sector. This initiative will also foster closer collaboration between food enterprises and develop synergies with the farming, retail and tourism industry. Councillor Paddy Kavanagh is Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District of Wexford County Council. “I am delighted to welcome Minister Phelan’s announcement of the selection of the Bunclody / Carrigduff area as a REDZ pilot and for the allocation of €50,000 to develop a local speciality food project within the area” said Councillor Kavanagh Director of Housing and

Community at Wexford County Council John Carley praised the local community for their work in producing a successful project application. “This innovative project is a perfect example of an entire community working

Going to the dogs to gear up for Christmas in Enniscorthy They are going all out to attract visitors to Enniscorthy this Christmas with plans to provide better lighting, more entertainment and to make the Castle the focal point of the festive activities. The Christmas programme is being spearheaded by the local Municipal District Council in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce and the Business Association. A night at the dogs last week marked the kick off of the fundraising events to raise the necessary cash to make it

a special Chrim6tas in Enniscorthy in 2015. In all the towns of the county this year the local authority is throwing its weight behind the commercial sector in a determined bid to make it attractive for people to shop at home during the festive season. The plan for Enniscorthy Castle is the most imaginative part of the festival programme. Its aim is to turn the building into a Santa Wonderland for children.

Far Left: Joan,Philomena and John Daly,Boolavogoe. Top LeftEmily White,Emma Byrne,Siobhan Fanning and Sylvia Sinnott,Enniscorth. Left: Deirdre,Bobbie and Jean Hendrick,Enniscorthy. Above: David and Cian O Brien,Oylegate.

Gorey business community asked to support elaborate plans for Christmas In Gorey there are elaborate plans for a complete new lighting and sound system for the Christmas festivities and a group of local business people have joined with the local Municipal District Council to project the project to local traders and to ensure that the funding in place to cover the ambitious plans. In a letter sent to l traders and business people in the town they outline the plans in detail.. ‘As you may be aware the problems encountered during Christmas 2014 were due to defective, obsolete and an outdated wiring system. Therefore it is now necessary to re-wire both the Main Street & Esmonde Street to facilitate this wonderful new lighting & sound system. The Plan: - Each tree on Gorey Main St & Esmonde St will be lit with pure white LED’s. - Esmonde St will have additional LED swags on poles - The Market House will be festooned with swags and wreaths. -The main Christmas Tree will be relocated to the Civic Centre. - Each side street will have a

strand of icicle lights strung across. - A Sound System will be put in place playing Christmas Music & mentioning sponsors. - A theme of White Christmas to be encouraged for each shop window. - Staff Christmas Jumper Competition - Selfies with Elfies The Big Turn On. Friday 20th November 2015. The lights will be switched on and a night of late night opening with Special offers, mulled wine & Hot Chocolate. We would encourage each and every business to participate in this. The Cost: In order to achieve this and truly put Christmas on the Christmas map, we need to raise €20,000. The Municipal District Council have given a one off grant of €80,000 toward the cost. We are requesting a donations from Companies. We stress that this proposal will not be an annual request as this budget will purchase a full set of new lights, re-wire the Main Street and Esmonde Street and as a minimum install the wiring for a sound system. It is important

to note that the annual expenditure involved will be the cost of putting up and taking down the lights and the running costs which will reduce significantly due to new LED lights being purchased. The current Council Members have agreed that their budget will cover the Annual running costs associated with this project. Support with this initiative would be gratefully appreciated and in recognition of this support, all media coverage will reflect the businesses who have worked with us to make this happen. Each business that contributes will receive a sticker for their premises acknowledging support for the new lights and will also be acknowledged on the Gorey Christmas Lights Facebook page. With Festive regards Philip Cullen – South East Financial Services; Sinead O’Sullivan – House of SOS; Joanna Switala – Partridges Bistro; Claire O’Connell – The Gaslamp Gallery; Dick White – Gorey Chamber; Sean Halford – Halfords Hair Salon; Joe Sullivan – Sullivan Property Lettings; Liz Stanley – Gorey Municipal District Council.

ACCA Quality Checked Award When considering changing or appointing accountants / auditors quality of service should be of paramount importance. We obtained a prestigious award from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) called the Quality Checked Seal. This involved being inspected by our Association over a comprehensive three day visit. Files and work procedures were checked to ensure we are achieving a very high standard of service. This is borne out by the fact

that less than 15% of ACCA practices in the republic of Ireland have this sought after award for which testing is mandatory. To put it another way, over 85% of practices are not meeting the required standard. Peter Large, A.C.C.A. Executive Director – Professional Standards, said: “This award of ACCA Quality Checked is one way of assuring businesses and the public that they can have confidence in the service offered by accountancy firms. The standards we set are very

high and it is a major achievement to secure this award, which reflects well on the calibre of staff and the services the firm offers to its clients.”

Mayor Carthy’s ‘good news’ for ‘It’s Good To Talk’ Sometimes events capture the public imagination in a way which is truly remarkable and one such event was the big suicide cycle spin off from Wexford town.. It set out from the quays in Wexford town and travelled out towards New Ross and out to Taghmon before turning in a loop back to the town. The turnout for the event was truly astonishing with hundreds and hundreds of cyclists taking to the roads to raise awareness of this terrible problem which has affected so many families. There were men cycling as individuals, men cycling as part of groups, women

on their own, in groups, cycling with their partners, there were children and some brave parents had taken on the challenge while carrying a child with them on the bicycle for the entire route. There was a great array of colour and a tremendous atmosphere as the cyclists set out from Wexford town and all along the route wellwishes gathered to provide encouragement and refreshments. The previous night saw the official launch of ‘Friends of Its Good to Talk’ which aims to support the ‘Good to Talk’ organisation in its work to promote positive mental

health in Wexford. A large crowd gathered in the Talbot Hotel for the launch of the group. And on a really great Wexford for all those involved in promoting positive mental health and suicide awareness in Wexford Mayor Ger Carthy delivered the best news of all when he revealed that he had managed to secure a rent write off for ‘Its Goode to Talk’ on the premises which they lease from the local authority. That’s worth €7,000 and will be a huge boost to this organisation which does not receive State funding despite the great work which it undertakes. Catherine Dempsey, and Eleanor Foley,Rathnure

Representing a multi-million euro investment into the locality by the retailer, the state-of-the-art building – which measures nearly 30,000 square feet and stands at eight metres high – is the largest Lidl store in Ireland and the first of its kind to be built in the country. This latest opening will see the store team grow to 27, bringing the total number of Lidl stores in Ireland to 143 and the number of employees to over 3,800. Boasting a brand new

architectural design and spacious layout incorporating a bigger warehouse, wider aisles, as well as improved staff and customer facilities, the state-of-the-art building represents the future of Lidl stores in Ireland. The innovative lean orientated design also features high spec operational facilities to maximise efficiency and streamline processes which will allow staff to spend more time in a customer facing role, further improving the customer shopping experience. The new store will also ensure a greater focus on energy efficiency with a reduction of around 40 – 50% on standard electricity costs via features like a SMART lighting system and an energy efficient heating system.

Speaking about the launch of Lidl’s ‘new concept’ store, Niall Murray, Regional Director, Lidl Ireland, said: “Having recently celebrated our fifteenth birthday here in Ireland, it’s exciting for us to be celebrating another milestone so soon with the launch of our very first ‘new concept’ store. This state-ofthe-art design will allow us to streamline our processes and enhance our customer shopping experience even further while still offering top quality products at marketleading prices. And this is just the beginning for us; we will continue to invest in new stores and modernisations over the coming months and years, bringing the best of Irish produce to customers in towns and cities right across the country.”

Gorey D’Arcy was on hand to launch the new store ichn Gorey last Thursday.

Minister Howlin takes a day off from cuts to go back home Check out our stunning range of coats in store today!

Minister Brendan Howlin performing the opening It was a day when Minister Brendan Howlin would be making no cuts, insisted Mayor Ger Carthy as the Minister went back home to the south end of Wexford town to officially open a Community Resource Centre near where he grew up. There was no tape and no scissors so the Minister would be making no cuts that day, said Cllr. Carthy as he welcomed the Minister back to his home turf. The Mayor warmly praised the members of the local community who had made such great efforts to make the Southend Family Resource

Centre a reality. The Resource Centre is housed in a dwelling provided by Wexford Borough Council and received State funding from a number of sources but a sizeable chunk of money was raised by the local community and much of the work was carried out by local volunteers. Mayor Carthy said it was a great tribute to the local community that even in a time of deep recession they had dug deep to support the project financially, For Minister Howlin it was a case of ‘coming home’ and on a joyous occasion for the local community he was able

to take time away from affairs of State to recall his childhood and growing up in the area. Seaview House is located in the heart of Maudlintown one of the most traditional of Wexford communities and it is now at the centre of almost everything that happens in the area. It houses various social activities for all age groups. The activities include a Monday Club, Parent and Toddler Group and has also included the development of a Community Garden which has been developed over the past year as part of a ‘Grow in Health’ project.

Night of nostalgia as The Moynihan Brothers Band celebrates 40 years on the road The Moynihan name is synonymous with music and entertainment in Co. Wexford and that name which began with the late Dave Moynihan is continued today through the Moynihan Brothers Band. The ‘brothers’ celebrated their forty years on the road with a massive night of celebration at the Ashdown Park Hotel in Gorey where a range of special artists gathered to entertain some of the Moynihans’ most loyal followers. The Moynihan Brothers are original members of the Dave Moynihan Showband founded by their father the late Dave Moynihan R.I.P. They have played their music the length

and breadth of Ireland over the years with both their father and their mother Patty who was also part of the band. In the early sixties Dave was offered jobs with such people as Val Doonican and Bridie Gallagher but turned them down as he very much wanted to have a family band involving his wife Patty and his family. This he subsequently achieved and did so very successfully. The Moynihan Brothers have also played as members of the Dave Moynihan Big Band in Wales, Scotland and and England in ballrooms such as the famous Galtymore in London, The National Ballroom in Kilburn and The McDermott Street, Gorey 47 Main Street, Arklow, Co Wicklow

Byrne welcomes Minister’s plan to ban smoky coal The announcement today by Environment Minister, Alan Kelly, that an all Ireland ban on smoky coals is to be introduced has been welcomed by Cllr. Malcolm Byrne, who had sought such a ban earlier this year. Malcolm had highlighted that the highest levels dangerous emissions from smoky coals were present in Enniscorthy and New Ross and contributed to health difficulties across the county. Four small areas around Enniscorthy town and two around New Ross town were found to have the most dangerous air quality in the Republic of Ireland. Enniscorthy Urban area was found to have the second most polluted air in the country. A detailed analysis of air quality and the residential fuel

market for the North South Ministerial Council has found that air in Enniscorthy emits 1211kg of dangerous particulate matter (PM10) per hectare. None of the areas where a smoky coal ban is in place feature in the top forty, including Wexford town. Malcolm had sought a Countywide ban on the burning of smoky fuels at Wexford County Council at the beginning of the year because of the health and environmental risks but argued that a national ban was really required. It is estimated that over 1,200 people die annually from exposure to excessive particulate matter, particularly lung cancer and respiratory disease. It also contributes to cardiovascular disease.

Social Singles Bowling Night is very popular, is a great night out and is a fun way to meet new people. Come along on Saturday, 10th October to Leisuremax, Wexford. Everybody is welcome (members/non-members -

Malcolm said, "This is a good move by the Minister and I am happy he has followed up on the recommendation. This will help protect the lives and health of citizens. Poor air quality is partially responsible for asthma and other respiratory diseases as well as various cancers, especially lung cancer. The right to clean air is essential"

He added that policy measures would have to be put in place to address potential issues of fuel poverty. "Currently, smokeless coals are slightly more expensive than smoky coals, even though they are far more efficient and give off more heat. We need to ensure that people can still heat their homes in an environmentally friendly way."

Welcome for increase in Debt Relief Notice The eagerly awaited change to the law increasing the threshold for a Debt Relief Notice from €20,000 to €35,000 has been announced, this means that more people struggling with debt can apply to have that debt written off. Debt Relief Notices (DRNs) are one of the insolvency options for people with low levels of debt, low income and few assets. MABS can support people to make an application for no cost. Olive’s story Olive is a single mother with two children. She lost her

job and, her only income was from Social Welfare, she fell behind on her loan repayments and could not get back on top of things. Olive was reluctant to ask for help as she was afraid she would be judged for making a mistake. When she came to MABS, Olive’s situation was assessed and she was advised of all her options. Olive decided to make an application for a DRN and MABS supported her with the process. The application was successful and she is now able to move on without fear of her creditors.

GER WALSH In any language drink driving is a serious offence The recent decision by the High Court to quash a drink driving case involving a Romanian driver because he had not been supplied with his breath test readings in Irish as well as English says a lot about the detachment between the legislature/court system and reality. Technically there was a loophole which the individual and his lawyers jumped through to get clear of this prosecution and both the accused and particularly his legal team were entitled to exploit any deficiency in the prosecution case. However, what does it say about us as a country when the furnishing of a technical legal document in Irish is given

greater importance than clearing the roads of potential drink drivers. Law abiding people are absolutely disgusted when they hear of cases like this dismissed on what they believe are frivolous technicalities. Of course it goes without saying that the Gardai have a duty to fully follow procedures and implement the legislation as it is enacted but somehow it seems wrong that a motorist can avoid prosecution for an alleged offence like drink driving because certain documents were not furnished to him in Irish. This, of course is not the first time that what many people regard as minor matters of procedure were used to

throw thousands of prosecutions into chaos and this type of thing really undermines public confidence in the judicial system. Where does the fault rest? There are those who would argue that it rests with the Garda who failed to follow procedures and of course there is validity in that argument. However, these same people are probably leading complaints about the lack of Garda patrols in rural areas and yet they want Garda time spent producing documents for accused persons in both English and Irish. The real fault probably rests with those who drew up the legislation in the first instance and in particular with those

politicians whose attraction to the Irish language or at least Irish language interest groups is so strong that they have a type of tunnel vision when it comes to the importance which should be placed on producing documents in Irish. The question which must be asked is whether or not it is right to place such an emphasis on the language that scare Garda resources have to be used to duplicate important documents and we must ask ourselves whether or not such an obsession with the language should be allowed to create a situation where potentially serious offences cannot be prosecuted because of an Irish Language loophole.

Can you feel it yet---the benefits of the recovery There will be no general election until next year, the Taoiseach insists but Minister Paul Kehoe may not be too convinced judging by his performance at the ploughing championships .last week. Suitably dressed for the occasion in his wellies, Paul launched a broadside against Fianna Fail while beating a very big drum about Fine Gael’s achievements in rebuilding rural Ireland. At a time when there is a lot of talk about the problems facing rural Ireland Paul was having none of it. ‘Rural Ireland is slowly getting back on its feet after the devastation Fianna Fail wrecked upon this country and the government has a plan to ensure that the economic recovery spreads to all corners of Ireland’, he told visitors to the Fine Gael stand.

Under Fine Gael stewardship the agri-food sectors are recovering and beginning to thrive once more; young people see agriculture as a viable career again; the agriculture colleges are attracting great

numbers; rural crime is being targeted with increased Garda

cars and numbers on the streets and tougher penalties for burglaries; the tourism sector is rebounding strongly; local construction is getting going again and small business is being supported, according to Paul who added

‘Fine Gael in Government will continue to spread

Maureen was a real lady Recent years have seen a major change and decline in the pub trade. Indeed it is fair to say that the change has been so dramatic in most instances that the Irish pub today bears little resemblance to what it was a few decades ago.

A whole range of things have contributed to the decline of the pub, not least the availability of much cheaper alcohol in supermarkets and offlicences. This has led to a much reduced role for the pub in

the everyday lives of people. But there was a time when it played a central part. It was where people made friends, shared their problems, organised their social life and much more. I was reminded of all that last week following the death

economic recovery to every corner of Ireland and bring its benefits to every person and family in Wexford’ Obviously there are a lot of ill informed people around the county because they do not seem to be aware of all this great recovery which will soon benefit every single person in the county. So if you have not felt this benefit yet expect to feel it one day soon. I am not sure how you’ll know you are feeling these benefits. Maybe you’ll wake up earlier in the morning, have less headaches or perhaps strangers will start buying you drinks in the pub, I’m not sure. But I know one thing for certain. Paul will be hoping that you feel it before polling day and react in the appropriate manner when you are handed the ballot paper.

of Maureen Fogarthy. Maureen and her husband Tim ran one of Wexford’s best known and friendliest pubs, Tim’s Tavern, at South Main Street for many years. It was a place where all walks of life gathered from morning time until late into the night to enjoy good company, fine food and even the odd drink. Maureen, who could only be described as a real lady,

Liam was a big supporter of Wexford Liam Healy who passed away last week played a huge role in the development of what is now the National Opera House in Wexford. Liam and his wife Eithne were huge supporters of the Wexford Festival and they showed their support in a very practical way--------------------by helping to raise much needed funds for the festival itself and later helping pay off the debts associated with the building of the Opera House. Liam’s association with Wexford went back to the early 1970s when as an executive with

Independent Newspapers he was involved in the purchase of the then privately owned People Newspapers and he always maintained a keen interest in the company, particularly Ireland’s Own Magazine. Even when Independent Newspapers operations spread to many continents Liam would always take time at company conferences to enquire about how many copies of Ireland’s Own were being sold in London. He was a very decent and kind man who contributed much in the areas of business and the arts.

Satellite dish madness At a time when Dublin is consumed by a housing crises with thousands of people without homes, many families forced to live in hotels and hundreds sleeping rough on the streets, it’s good to see that the local authority has its priorities in order. Last week they took a 90 year old woman to court because she had a satellite dish erected on the front of her home in breach of planning laws. When the woman received the first notice from the Council she thought it was a joke and didn’t do anything about it. You can understand why a woman of her age would take this view, but the satellite dish, which was a present for the woman’s 90th birthday was to prove costly because legal costs associated with the case amounted to €2,000 and to

was in charge of the food part of the business and at the time Tim’s was known for having the best lunches in town. The customers were like the couple’s extended family with Maureen playing a mothering role to all the various characters who made up the pub’s extensive client base. Maureen and Tim retired many years go and the

avoid a criminal conviction she had to agree to pay a substantial portion of them. Of course planning laws need to be enforced but surely there was a better way of dealing with a 90 year old woman than taking her to court over a matter like this. Wouldn’t a visit by an official to her home to fully explain the situation have been a better and much less expensive way of sorting the problem?

premises which was once their thriving pub is now a coffee house which in itself provides a fairly clear illustration of where the pub trade has gone over the past few decades. At this very sad time for Tim and the family many people will recall Maureen’s friendly smile and the many fine lunches which she served up over the years.

Introduction And we thought August was busy for us. Between having babies, starting new jobs, college, weddings, TY balls, birthdays and all the rest we haven’t had a second to ourselves and we can’t wait for things to quiet down a bit. There’s some good

news in the works hopefully to be announced in the next few weeks too but we’ll announce all in due time. I think we’re both ranted-out from the last few weeks so we’ll be keeping away from that this week.

TUNE OF THE WEEK

TUNE OF THE WEEK Justin Bieber – What Do You Mean

Best song in the whole world by my favourite person in the world. Hate him or love him, this is a banger! Probably the most anticipated song this year and it didn’t disappoint. #Cracker.. - Adam Ennis

Greatest Pub in Town While still providing aural pleasure to the ears of Wexford by spinning the best tunes going I’ve learned a new trade in the last few weeks in my local bar Bugler Doyle’s. They have always boasted having the nicest pint of Guinness in the world and now I can pour it (just about) . Not only that it’s my Local and new workplace but it also is the #1 pub in Wexford. If it’s a quiet pint (front bar) or a mad one (Back Bar) you are after it caters for everyone especially during big sporting events when the

atmosphere comes alive. (Now that little piece should impress the boss, don’t you think) I’ve been delighted to have been asked to help out in event organising in the pub. I love doing that nearly as much as Dj’n. First event

will be 30th of October and of course it has to be fancy dress being the night before Halloween. Adam will be giving us a help on the night. And we plan a lot more between now and Christmas, I’ll keep you posted.

Eoin Healy USELESS FACT OF THE WEEK RTE’s ‘The Late Late Show’ is the world’s longest running talk show!!!! I have no idea why as I personally think it’s the worst thing ever and would gladly watch Graham Norton or Jonathon Ross over it any day of the week.

We Are Going Up!!!! Amazingly one of the less reported news stories in local media & Social Media outlets is that of the fantastic achievements that Wexford Youths have come to complete this year by getting promoted to the Premier Division in Ireland. Not only have they got promoted but they have done it in absolute style. Founded in 2007 there have been struggles on and off the pitch through the years but under the guidance of Shane Keegan they have put everything to bed and have progressed beyond any-

one’s imagination. With Danny Furlong banging in the goals week in and week out they also have the league’s top striker who I’m sure will have no problem finding the net in the Premier Division . Wexford Youths are a club on the up, the women won the 2015 league title and competed in this year’s champion’s league qualification only to narrowly miss out on the group stages. An underage structure is also in place at the club which I’m proudly involved in as I coach the u12’s. There are

Series of the Week Friday Night Lights Usually I hate this type of patriotic American TV show. This one’s a bit different though. I’ve been plagued for months about getting into it – surprisingly enough, all by lads – so, eventually I gave in and started. It’s 10 times better than I expected it to be. If you’re in to cheesy American TV shows, you’ll love it. And even if you’re not, you should definitely give it a try. Some of the acting is a bit dodgy in the first season but I’ve been assured it improves a bit. Basically it’s set in a Texas high school where American football is all that matters. The show revolves around the football team but has more to do with their lives

#Throwback Pierces Wexford Town outside the sport than anything else. The team’s top player, Jason, who was destined to go pro, gets injured and it’s all about his road to recovery and his replacement as

quarterback and everything else along the way. I’m about 25 episodes in after a week and I’m officially addicted. Definitely worth checking out on Netflix!

Our Gigantic glamorous Tesco wasn’t always a shining bright building at the end of King Street as we know it today. It was once home to the biggest employer in Wexford.

three teams from u11-u13 which will hopefully provide the youths and the senior team with locally produced talent in the future and believe you me we have a few stars in the making out there. With all this positive news fingers crossed that more people will support the club in the Premier Division and they get more media coverage as all the sporting coverage is on under achieving GAA teams and not a winning soccer team for some reason. LARRY O’GORMAN

The man who gets behind the sports headlines

Can this championship be redeemed? Well, well, well , we are getting to the interesting stages in the local championship with the semi-finals down for decision next weekend. And you know when I think about it that says it all because these really are the only interesting stages in this championship because all in all it has not been a wonderful championship when you look back at it. Fair enough some of the games were very close and exciting from that point of view, but that does not mean there was a great standard of hurling or anything like that. It was poor enough really most of

the time so let us hope that the next few games will liven things up a bit and give us something to remember in 2015. So who do I fancy?. You have the Harriers taking on Oulart and Glynn facing St. Martins. I’d have to start with the Harriers now wouldn’t I. Most people will have already marked Oulart down as finalists but I think this game will be a lot closer than most people think. The Harriers won’t fear Oulart, they have already beaten them in the league semi –final and looking back to last year Oulart scraped through, just about.

So there will be no fear there and all my hopes and heart will be with the Harriers, but I still have to say that I slightly fancy Oulart to come out on top in this one. But don’t write off the Harriers and it will certainly be no shock to the Wexford town lads if they do manage to see off Oulart. I think the second game will also be close, although a lot of people fancy St. Martin to make it through. Glynn always believe in themselves and with a young team they will give the Piercestown men a run or their money.

But I will still have to go for St. Martin’s-------but only just. The difference really is that they have plenty of experience in their team mixed with some up and coming talent and the mix may just be too much for their opponents. So it’s an Oulart V Glynn final for me By the way, in case you haven’t noticed, Christmas is just around the corner. Where did that year go? And by the way did I tell you who I fancy to win the All Ireland next year--------well Tipperary, of course. See you soon.

Well are you all glued to the Rugby World Cup. So far so good for Ireland and wouldn’t it be great to go on and win it, beating England in the final just to put the cream on it------well that’s if England can reach the final, I know we can. In all these major tournaments there is a moment or a game which catches the imagination and

it will be heard to better Japan beating South Africa, What a moment in sport that was. You couldn’t help yourself getting overjoyed at that result, could you? The whole tournament has been a great success so far and hats off to England for such a well organised event. I am really looking forward to the next few weeks.

Miracle of the United ‘fans’ I thought Man United had lost all their support around Wexford. I mean they were invisible for the past year or so----------no one in sight. But now United are back on the top of the Premiership and you know what, it’s a bit like

the miracle of Lourdes-----------United supporters are appearing all over the place again. Whatever about the fair weather fans, I think it’s great to see united back at the top.

Big day for Wexford Lifeboat Service

A section of the attendance at the naming ceremony

Mayor Ger Carthy addressing the attendance at the ceremony The powerful sound of the Male Voice Choir echoed across Wexford Quays as a distinguished crowd gathered for another important chapter in the history of the lifeboat service in the town. The occasion was the Naming Ceremony and Service of Dedication of the D Class lifeboat the Alfred William Newman. The whole thing was made possible as a result of a generous bequest in the Will of Alfred William Newman in the UK.. In an impressive ceremony

the lifeboat was officially handed over to the RNLI on the day by the Chief Executive of the Commissioners of Irish Lights, Yvonne Shields. The service of dedication was led by Fr. Aodhan Marken and Canon Arthur Minnion. The Mayor of Wexford, Cllr Ger Carthy, who opened the proceedings paid warm tribute to all those who work in a voluntary capacity as part of the lifeboat service in Wexford helping to protect the local community from the perils of the s4ea.

He made particular mention of all those volunteers who in the early 1990s, following the tragic drowning of well know local entertain Paddy Busher, raised the funds to set up the Wexford Harbour Inshore Rescue Service which formally became part of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution almost a decade later. This meant that after a seventy seven year gap Wexford Harbour again had the protection of an RNLI Lifeboat Service.

News Political Diary Why TD Mick should thank the Lord for NAMA Exit Daddy Browne TD Mick Wallace should be taking to his knees every morning and praising the Lord for those who created NAMA. Given that he is one of the greatest critics of the State Body it might seem odd to suggest that he should be doing anything in support of it. But in reality Wallace owes almost everything to NAMA. It’s an unpopular organisation because in the public mind it is associated with the darkest of dark days in the country when the collapse of the nation’s banks brought everyone close to a state of collapse. So NAMA was never going to be popular and given the scale of its property portfolio and the level of write downs that were inevitable after the crash a lot of its decision were always going to raise suspicions in the public mind. In steps Deputy Mick to give voice to that public suspicion and concern. Add the benefit of Dail Privilege, throw in a few additional nuggets of information about large sums of money resting in bank accounts, talk about personal threats and make a few suggestions about cover ups and bingo you are the

hero of all those who have a suspicious hatred of NAMA --------and there are many of those people about. While other TDs are busy trying to get infrastructural projects for the county, or holding clinics and dealing with a range of issues from medical cards to social welfare payments, or dressing up and attending local funerals, the 2011 Wexford poll topper does none of that. In fact he makes no secret of the fact that if you want your pot holes filled he is not the man for you. Indeed if you were to carry out research--------as political parties do--------to try and find the best type of candidate for a middle of the road Dail constituency in South Leinster what you would come up with would almost certainly be the direct opposite of Mick Wallace. First of all take constituency work. He simply doesn’t believe in it. Yet there are those who swear that in a place like Wexford sorting people’s problems and holding clinics is an essential part of being a TD. Then there is attendance at

community gatherings and functions. Being seen around and attending events is a serious priority for most TDs, but it’s not on Mick’s radar at all. In fact he doesn’t even live locally. Next take social issues and particularly the area of abortion. Wexford has proven to be a relatively conservative place on social issues and most candidates would want to broadly reflect that but Mick makes no bones about his views which are to the extreme left on social issues, favouring, as he does. a woman’s right to choose on the abortion issue. In a county with close associations to the United States, think JFK and John Barry, TD Mick has actually being hauled before the courts as a result of this illegal protests against the US and generally his focus has been more on international affairs than say on getting road by-passes for Enniscorthy or New Ross. There are many other areas where Mick Wallace breaks with convention, the most obvious probably being his dress. If you went to any selection meetings of the major parties in this county and

suggested that an ideal candidate would be someone who would only ever dress in jeans and tee shirt and never present themselves looking as if they had jumped out of the shower any time lately, you would get short shift. So basically Mick Wallace is everything a potentially successful Wexford Dail candidate should not be but the consensus is that none of that makes any difference. He is currently the most powerful force in Wexford politics and medical cards or not, pot hotels or not, abortion or not, jeans or not, all pundits believe be the people’s choice to represent Wexford again. If they are correct----------and few would bet against it-----------Wallace will have succeeded in turning on its head everything people previously thought were essential ingredients for success in Wexford politics. And NAMA, or at least his criticisms of NAMA, will have played key role in that, which is why the Independent TD could do worse than thank someone for the fact that it was set up in the first place.

John Browne, or Daddy Browne as he is bring referred to in Fianna Fail circles, finally announced his retirement last week leaving the way open for a tough battle between his son James and Malcolm Byrne to succeed him. Word has it that the Browne Machine has been working overtime in an effort to ensure that Byrne’s attempts to get on the Fianna Fail ticket are frustrated. Byrne is regarded as potentially the strongest of the potential Fianna Fail candidates and that is a very good reason for the Browne camp to make every effort to ensure that he does not make it to the

general election line up. It looks as if the delegates will be asked to select one north and one south candidate. Michael Sheehan should make it through in a battle with Michael Whelan in New Ross, but it could be close. However, the bitterness of the divide in New Ross Fianna Fail means that the non New Ross candidate will hold a big advantage leaving James Browne in the driving seat to succeed his father in the Dail at this stage, unless the party decides to opt for three candidates which would ensure a place for councillor Byrne and a real battle between the two.
