Phone: 053 9123527 With the two would-be TDs for North Wexford, Michael D’Arcy and Malcolm Byrne finding themselves in this scene at Gorey Town Park on Saturday afternoon, it is not surprising that Senator D’Arcy was quick off the mark to welcome new anti burglary measures on Monday morning. The Senator said the new Anti-Crime and Burglary response announced by the Gardai would crack down on crime in Co. Wexford. He pointed out that the plan would be backed by increased government investment, tougher laws on sentences and stricter bail for repeat offenders. Meanwhile, on Saturday afternoon Senator D’Arcy was surrounded by all sorts of strange creatures in Gorey Town Park, while his political rival, Malcolm Byrne, was equipped with a pair of scissors. But there was no need to call for any of the new Garda vehicles which the Senator has been announcing for the county in recent weeks. Instead it was a crime free occasion marking the opening of the Running Track and Playground and the celebration of a Spooky Halloween family event in the Park.

News Minister Paul Kehoe was among the hundreds who attended the screening of Brooklyn in Enniscorthy last week and the Wexford TD turned critic for the night to give his views on the film and the occasion.

pThis is a new venture for me to be a film critic and having an opportunity to review a film made in my own town is an honour. For that reason it is probably natural for me to find itdifficult to criticise the film but I believe it is impossible to be critical of the film which came to life before our eyes in Enniscorthy last Wednesday night. . In the comfort of the ever reliable Riverside Park Hotel you might be excused for thinking you were in glitzy LA, with red carpet, black tie and paparazzi. Watching the film and the streetscape of John St, Church St, St Aidan’s, Curracloe Beach was very familiar and comforting. Also seeing the faces of so many local people of all ages was a treat. The film has an excellent cast with many recognisable Irish faces. Saoirse Ronan’s portrayal of young Irish immigrant, Eilis Lacey, as she leaves her home and family for a new life in 1950s Brooklyn

is perfect casting;. Domhnall Gleeson and Emory Cohen as the personifications of her choice between Ireland and the U.S., Jane Brennan as the mother of an emigrating child, Julie Walters as a member of the Kehoe clan and the legendary Jim Broadbent as Father Flood This is a story that many Irish families can identify with when loved ones leave home from our native soil and fall in love on the other side of the world. It was looking like a fairy tale love affair for a long time but Tony wasn’t going to give up his sweetheart easily, andt reality bites when Eilis has to return home due to a family bereavement. I won’t spoil the film for the thousands of Wexford people who I am certain will b e anxious to see it by going into any more detail on the story line. Just to say that whilst back home In Enniscorthy matters of the heart are further complicated and this leads to heartbreak, something which is portrayed so well by Ronan.

This film might appeal more to the female viewers from the opinion of other men I was hearing on the night, however, I did really enjoy it. I would encourage everyone to watch this film and as an Enniscorthy person I will be trying to identify his local characters over the next few weeks and I am especially interested to find out the identity of the real Miss Kelly! The re-enactment of the good old days in the Athenaeum was a sign of things to come when the refurbishment work is completed next year and overall Enniscorthy is shown in this film at its best.

20,000 attended Wexford Festival events The curtain fell on the 64th Wexford Festival Opera on Sunday evening bringing to an end another highly successful event which saw tens of thousands of people visit the town both for the Operas and the various associated events organised as part of the wider festival. On the final evening two of this year’s singers were awarded two very significant artistic bursaries. Canadian soprano Magali Simard-Galdès and Irish soprano Rachel Croash received their awards from Artistic Director David Agler, from the stage of the National Opera House in front of a sold-out audience after the final performance of Le Pré aux clercs by Ferdinand Hérold. The Wexford Festival Opera Aria Friends Bursary was awarded to Dublin soprano Rachel Croash, who performed in no less than four operas this year,. The long-standing Gerard Arnhold Bursary was awarded to Canadian soprano Magali Simard-Galdès, who sang the role of Nicette in Le Pré aux

clerc, her first professional operatic engagement, which received great critical acclaim. Anna Picard in The Times said of her, “Yet the evening belongs to the 21-year-old soprano Magali Simard-Galdès (Nicette), making her professional debut with sparkling foiritura…..” Commenting on the winners, David Agler said, “Wexford has always prided itself on discoveries, whether it be repertoire or singers. Providing a platform for the best emerging talent on the national and international stage is a key part of the Wexford Festival Opera mission. These bursaries, generously provided by the Arnhold Estate and the Aria Friends of Wexford Festival Opera, allow us to nurture this emerging talent that Wexford is known for uncovering. Over the past 12 days over 20,000 people attended 54 separate events which ranged from evening performances, to ShortWorks daytime operas, to the ever popular gala night. With very high demand for

tickets this year the Festival entirely sold out, with lengthy waiting lists for tickets for the three main evening operas. Though the Festival is now over, two of the three evening operas will be broadcast on two separate dates in November. Koanga by Frederick Delius will be broadcast nationwide on Saturday, 7 November at 7 p.m. on RTÉ lyric fm, while Le Pré aux clercs by Ferdinand Hérold, will be broadcast via RTÉ lyric fm on Saturday, 14 November at 7 p.m. nationwide, as well as to 14 European Broadcasting Union (EBU) member radio stations. The participating national radio stations will be in countries as far afield as the USA and Australia, Poland and Canada, and also include The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, and the UK, with the potential audience for these numerous broadcasts ranking in the millions.

News Co. Council Diary

Lawlor outburst over Carthy’s cut to festival freebie When the Mayor of Wexford Ger Carthy decided not to take his family, friends and supporters to a night at the opera at taxpayers’ expense he could hardly have imagined the verbal assault he would suffer from the Labour Party. For some time the Mayor of the day has had the privilege of gathering together those important to him, dressing up and heading for the Opera House. Some refreshments would be on offer we hear, perhaps even a pre-opera dinner, or a post opera supper and the bill for the whole thing would be picked up by the Council. Carthy told his colleagues at their October meeting that he would be attending the opera as a guest on opening night and on other occasions and while he fully supported the festival and the Council’s funding of it he did not think it was appropriate to have the Council foot the bill for the Mayor’s night at a time when the local authority finances were stretched, there was a problem with homelessness

and many families were struggling to make ends meet. There were nods and murmurs of support for his decision but not from the Labour Party’s sole member on the Wexford Municipal District Council, George Lawlor. As a former Mayor he alleged that the current Mayor’s decision was a slight on previous holders of the Office. Lawlor, an accomplished singer, has a pretty powerful voice and he raised it to ever increasing levels to tear into the Mayor but when he questioned the spending of money to bring the Council Stage to Our Lady’s Island for the pilgrimage season Cllr. Carthy fought back saying that If the government could only find €3 per week for old age pensioners in the budget he couldn’t justify spending money taking personal guests to the Opera. As things got even more heated there was a threat to suspend the meeting before order was restored and the Director of Services Tony

Larkin strongly rebuffed the questioning of the spend on bringing the stage to Our Lady’s Island for the Pilgrimage Season which he described as an important event which probably had not been given the recognition or support it deserved from the council in the past. And he said the stage had been erected for much less important events in Wexford town in the past and pointed out that the new Council had a responsibility to support events right cross the district in both urban and rural areas. Cllr Deirdre Wadding applauded the Mayor’s decision and said it showed leadership and a bit of solidarity with hard pressed families while former Mayor Davy Hynes said he saw absolutely no slight on previous Mayors from the current Mayor’s decision. People made their own decisions based on what was appropriate for the time and he supported Mayor Carthy in doing that. The exchange over the

Mayor saving a couple of thousand quid on a night at the opera was the most heated since this current Council came into Office, more heated than any issue around water charges, hospital waiting lists, cuts to education SNAs, the Property Tax or anything else. Cutting back on the Council’s entertainment spend at the Opera Festival was an unlikely issue to cause fireworks in the Council Chamber but that’s exactly what happened. The mild mannered councillor Frank Staples, who was sitting beside Cllr Lawlor, was visibly taken back by the exchange and was cowering in his seat at the height of the Labour man verbal assault on the First Citizen. A free night at the opera is something worth defending, it seems.

Mayor Ger Cathy has boxer Dean Walsh by his side as he poses with his Council colleague Cllr. George Lawlor at a Civic Reception to honour Dean and other sports stars. In the Council Chamber there were no punches thrown but George launched a strong verbal attack on the Mayor over his decision to end the Mayor’s night out at the Opera Festival.

Enniscorthy’s ‘Red Carpet’ night It was a touch of LA coming to the banks of the Slaney and a night the like of which Enniscorthy has never seen before. The big star of the show, Saoirse Ronan may have cried off but that took none of the glitz of the special premier screening of ‘Brooklyn’ in the transformed Riverside Park Hotel last Wednesday night. They have talked about little

was a wonderful atmosphere in the hotel and on the riverbank as locals rubbed shoulders with some of the stars of the show and visitors to celebrate a real Enniscorthy success story. In a sense that was not the film at all but the man who wrote the novel on which the film is based, Colm Toibin. This was a real local boy

made good homecoming for the internationally successful author and if he ever had any doubts abut how well he is celebrated and appreciated in

his native Enniscorthy they were banished last week. It was not all about celebration, of course, although that was a big part of it. The event was masterminded by Town Manager Padraig O’Gorman and his aim, along with Council members, is to ensure that Enniscorthy’s association with this film will have lasting benefits for the town. It was a really special night for two hundred local people cast as movie extras in ‘Brooklyn’ as they watched their moment on the big screen for the first time, joined by cast members Eve Macklin, Gary Lydon and the author , Colm Tóibín.. ‘All of the Irish scenes in the film were captured in Enniscorthy town, Curracloe beach and Tagoat in Wexford in March 2014. Commenting on the filming of the movie in Enniscorthy and the pre-release screening in his hometown Colm Tóibín said, “I think it was great that the Enniscorthy sequences in the film were shot in the town. All the people working on the film spoke of the beauty of the town itself and the warm reception they received from everyone they met.” Three of Enniscorthy’s

main streets were used as the ‘live set’ during filming and the town council assisted the location’s team in transforming Castle Street, Court Street and John’s Street back in time to the 1950’s. Enniscorthy District Manager, Padraig O’Gorman who along with a team from Wexford County Council made a strong bid for the film to be captured in the town sayid,

“We are really thrilled to host a special screening of ‘Brooklyn’ in Enniscorthy , it means a really great deal to everyone in town. Huge efforts went into convincing the films producers that capturing the film here was a fantastic idea and thankfully they agreed. The local people from Enniscorthy also got behind the concept and everyone contributed to

News 30% of N.Wexford workers commute The Chair of the Gorey Municipal District, Cllr. Malcolm Byrne has stated that the changing nature of employment in North Wexford requires a strategic response to attract more high tech jobs into the area as well as making conditions as supportive as possible for commuters. Analysis carried out for Wexford County Council by the University of Maynooth shows that in excess of 30% of workers living in the Gorey/Courtown area and all communities north of Gorey town now commute to work into Wicklow and Dublin. Malcolm pointed out that improved road networks and the quality of life in the area

will make Gorey increasingly attractive for commuters as the economy recovers. The figures prove that the nature of employment in the North of the County differs from other parts. He said, "It is currently quicker by road to get from Gorey to the M50 than to Wexford town and the excellent quality of life offered in North Wexford continues to make us a very attractive prospect for commuters. We've got to look at ways though of encouraging job creation in North Wexford so that these workers can work locally as well as preparing for the population growth that we will anticipate in the coming years."

CWCW Enniscorthy awarded €85,000 in Lottery Grants Minister Paul Kehoe has welcomed the announcement this morning of two grants totalling €85,000 for County Wexford Community Workshop in Enniscorthy. Over 70 organisations across Ireland have been awarded funding of €1.2 million under the latest round of National Lottery Grants from the Department of Health. Welcoming the

announcement, Minister Kehoe said “two separate grants have been awarded €50,000 for a pre-school and €35,000 for the extension a house. This is the second announcement this year, in which the Department of Health provides once-off grants to organisations for healthcare-related and social care services.”

Wexford sports men honoured for international success Mayor Ger Carthy and members of the Wexford Municipal District Council turned out at the Irish National Heritage Park to salute the achievements of some of Wexford’s finest sports stars on the international stage. .The reception recognised the achievement of Dean Walsh in becoming the first Wexford town boxer to bring home a medal from the European Elite Championship. Also celebrated was the success of kick boxer Stephen Murphy. Stephen won the world welter weight kick boxing title in

Scotland in June. Stephen is also champion at super middle weight. The event also recognised the success of Wexford’s handballers with seven players who claimed medals at the world handball championships being celebrated .. It was a fantastic achievement but even more remarkable due to the fact that no less than three families claimed two medals each------Ned and Gavin Buggy, Josh and David Kavanagh, Robert and Mark Doyle all claimed gold while there was also medal success for Noel Holohan.

It is a brave writer who puts on a serious play in a time of economic difficuties when most audiences are looking for light relief or crowd pleasing plays that distract from monetary woes. ‘Ghost Radio,’ written and directed by Eamon Colfer is set in post apocalyptic, bombed-out city. performed by Michael Conway, is interrupted by a young man, Kinneaste Grown, portrayed by Tiernan Messit, climbs onto his roof with the intention of catching a signal form the last radio station. Ghost Radio possesses echoes of Sarah Kane’s ‘Blasted’ and Cormac McCarthy’s ‘The Road.’ The world presented on the stage is nihilistic, with Colfer’s script being a meditation on the human condition and society. The setting, a dilapidated rooftop, and characters possess no cultural baggage, allow the play to act as a universal commentary on the human condition, exposing a collective Jungian ‘shadow.’ The play addresses such themes as, humanity’s propensity towards violence and the subject’s need to seek out an identity through a communal grouping. Various of gangs are mentioned throughout the play, and the most horrific image of a collective is a giant rat, made up of thousands of rats, consuming everything before them. Although the play presents a nihilistic world, there is also a spiritual theme. Grigor Foals ( Michael Conway) has found God through solitude and prayer, hence his aversion to any form of intrusion, when the young man invades his space. He speaks to an owl, a metaphor for wisdom, Michael Conway’s portrayal of Foals is not only believable, but visceral. The character is shell-shocked looking and bombed-out like the city he dwells in. Conway, through his eyes, brilliantly reflects the horrors that he has witnessed from his vantage point on the roof. The grim atmosphere is punctuated by a dark comic moment when Foals describes how a woman he fancied plunges to her death from the building. This act as a safety valve to the tension on the stage. Michael Conway is excellently supported by Tiernan Messit who gives a convincing performance as a young man caught up in his obsession for a mind conditioned girl who acts as sex slave. Ghost Radio is a thought provoking play and excellently written. The fluidity of the language is brillianty executed by the two actors on stage and the direction is well-paced. For anyone wishing to see an interesting play, “Ghost Radio’ is the play to view. Richard Connolly

Home Care: The Alternative to Nursing Home Care Person centred home care Nursing homes can be helpful but there is no place like home. Home is a place to feel safe and warm surrounded by the memories that make up a lifetime. Home is the foundation of our lives. A symbol of our families and friends. It's a personal sanctuary of comfort and familiarity. Home is the one place where we can truly be ourselves. Young and old, we all understand the importance of home. And especially as we age, home is where we want to stay. Time passes and calendars change, but inevitably the moment comes when you start to wonder: Can Mum stay safe without me? Who will help Dad with is groceries when I'm not around? How can I even start this conversation? Home care is a very personal and intimate type of care. A home caregiver will deliver one-on-one care and will provide care that matches the needs of the person. There is no waiting for help with activities of daily living which happens in an

institutionalised care setting. A caregiver spends quality time with the person and is readily available. Giving your loved one the freedom to stay at home also allows you to maintain your lifestyle while ensuring that your loved one is receiving

the perfect amount of care in their own home. Staying close to memories and familiar surroundings can make ageing a much more calming,

soothing process - something everyone can agree with. If you have any questions about home care services and how they can help your loved one maintain their independence and live at home longer please contact your local Home Instead Senior Care office. All local offices offer a free assessment to all prospective clients so we can get to know our clients and their needs. Whether you are looking for short term respite, or long term home care we are happy to meet with you at a time that suits you and your family. We appreciate your time and look forward to helping you turn this difficult decision into one that will change your life for the better. You should be confident that you are making the right choice not

only for your parent, relative or friend, but for you and your family as well. Benefits of Home Care ⎫ Home care is delivered at home ⎫ The person receives personalised, one-on-one care ⎫ Home care encourages older people to maintain their independence ⎫ Home care is often the first choice of seniors - very few people choose to be placed in a nursing home unless it's the only place they can receive the care they need ⎫ Home care is often less expensive than other kinds of care and people usually feel better about the money spent on home care as the care is more personalised and the quality of care is far beyond what it could be in a nursing home. Tax relief of up to 41% is available on home care fees. Please contact your local Home Instead Senior Care office for information on how to claim tax relief and how to apply for a home care grant. for seniors and people with disabilities of all ages Since opening in March 2007 Home Instead Senior Care, an organisation which assists in allowing older people to remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible, has achieved much to be proud of. In 2013 alone, HISC achieved ISO 9000, Q mark and Healthmark awards, funded Trinity College €365,000 for a major research project and provided free Dementia education workshops to over 1000 family carers throughout the county and plenty more besides. “We’re absolutely delighted and grateful with the success we have achieved in all aspects of our business,” says Stephen Conway, owner of Home Instead Senior Care based in Kerlogue, Wexford.” As Conway explains, core values of care, dignity and respect, continual encouraging and empowering growth and maintaining an intense focus in building a quality, valuable service to their clients combine in making HISC an awardwinning organisation. “Our

mission is enhancing the lives of older people, enabling them to live happy, healthy and independent lives in their home for longer than otherwise possible. There’s no doubting that the service which HISC provides makes the world of a difference in the lives of many people across the county. Anywhere from two hours per day to round the clock care can be provided, ensuring that people can maintain their independence and dignity. “Over 90 per cent of older people want to remain living at home for the rest of their life, with quality of life, yet less than 60 per cent of people enjoy that privilege. Knowing they can get 41 per cent tax relief off the cost of our professional service also makes this an affordable option.” Conway acknowledges. Staples & Associates are Fire Safety experts Established by Jim Staples in January 2006, J. Staples and Associates are Chartered Engineers and a Fire Safety Consultancy. Jim has over 33 years within the industry and offers expert technical advice on all aspects of fire safety from the initial design stage of proposed buildings to existing buildings which have been altered and now require fire safety certification. The benefit of having a fire safety survey carried out on an existing building prior to buying it will highlight any defects or potential fire safety issues within the building. If you are negotiating a purchase price but find that there are fire safety issues that must be corrected, you are now in a position to re-negotiate your bid, ask them to carry you the work required or decide not to purchase the building. Very few second hand, and even new buildings, are without some issues that need to be addressed, and as such a good fire safety survey and detailed report will generally pay for itself many times over, so it is crucial to get the best survey rather than the cheapest one. The better the survey, the less money you will end up having to spend in future on whatever property or building you buy. The House and Apartment Surveys we carry out are comprehensive which include the use of specialist equipment allowing us to view problems or defects which may be affecting the building. The inspection will most

often begin in the roof void where the roof structure will be examined to establish if it is correctly fire stopped between adjacent properties. From there we work our way down through the building noting items such as the condition of the party walls etc. and the condition of internal joinery such as doors etc. We will endeavour to establish how the building was constructed, whether the wall are cavity walls, solid masonry, timber framed or some other form of construction. Once this is established we can then advice on the possible defects which could arise from the various types of construction. We also prepare Fire Safety Certificates and Disability Access Certificates applications. A Disabled Access Certificate allows for all people regardless of ability to have the freedom to move throughout development with ease. This means that the proposed works have been assessed and that the proposed works when built, will meet the requirements of Part M of the Building Control Regulations. This relates to the building and site in terms of approach, access, egress, and ease of use by the widest possible range of users. You can be contacted us at Unit M6, Wexford Enterprise Centre, Rosslare Road, Kerlogue, Wexford. Tel: 053 91 65677 Email: jim@jsafire.ie or www.jsafire.ie

News Election Notebook

FF and FG still eye up women, Carthy beginning to look like a candidate Polling Day in the general election is now about sixteen weeks away and the picture in Co. Wexford is becoming much clearer with virtually all the likely contenders now officially declared for the contest. In terms of the three main parties the line up reflects the changed landscape in terms of the support which they can command nowadays. There was a time when Fianna Fail ran four candidates in Wexford and Fine Gael have never had fewer than three runners while Labour ran two candidates in 2011. Next year the three traditional parties will be represented by just five candidates (unless Fianna Fail and Fine Gael succeed in finding ‘gender balance’ women over the next few weeks) . That speculation about third candidates being added by FG and FG continues with each said to be watching what the other is doing before making a move. Two leading women in business are most often mentioned as the Fine Gael possibilities, while surprisingly Aoife Byrne is re-emerging as a possibility for Fianna Fail. The addition

of Ms Byrne, daughter of former TD Hugh, would be likely to cause outrage in the party ranks given that she didn’t even put her name before convention. Apart from the desperate gender balance search the only other question to be answered is whether or not the Mayor of Wexford Borough District Ger Carthy will put his name forward. In political circles his intentions have been the source of intense interest and speculation for months but to date Carthy has kept his powder dry. One of the likely reasons for this is the fact that the Carthys were awaiting a new arrival to the family and those personal considerations will have outweighed any political considerations during the past few months. But with Baby Erin now settling into the family home in Our Lady’s Island the Mayor must surely be surveying the political scene because make-your-mind-up time is rapidly approaching. However, if the talk among the political classes is to be believed then that decision has already been made and Carthy’s name will be on the

ballot paper next year. The Labour Party in particular appears exercised by Carthy as George Lawlor’s extraordinary reaction to his decision to cut back on entertainment expenses during the festival clearly illustrated. At a time when there is a strong appetite for Independent representation as evidenced by the opinion polls, Carthy is probably well placed to take advantage of that yearning among the public for something different.. However, with Mick Wallace laying claim to a huge chunk of that Independent vote and with all the main party people saying there is no room in the county for a second independent TD there are those who suggest that Carthy would be better keeping his money in his back pocket rather than wasting it on an ultimately futile election campaign. They may be correct or it could just be wishful thinking on their part. However, despite their dismissal of his chances the major parties appear to be rather exercised by his intentions and some of them

at least would appear to believe that he will be a serious contender if he runs, regardless of what they might say in public. Carthy was the poll topper in the Wexford District in last year’s local election, getting the second highest vote in the entire county, so he has a solid base on which to build and the decision of his colleagues to elect him Mayor of the Wexford Borough District last June, just twelve months after his arrival on the political scene, has given him a platform to achieve a very high profile in Wexford town and district. Shrewd political observers realise that a proven track record in vote getting, a high public profile, countywide GAA connections and operating in a very fertile climate for independents all add up to a potentially very potent general election force, which is why Carthy is already being treated as an election runner by the main parties even if he is still keeping his options open. The chances are he will be in the field officially before Christmas.

Gotcha-----motorists trapped in ‘full’ car park must pay to get out

Why you should make a Will It is important to make a Will because that is how you place yourself in a position to provide for the distribution of your property

Gotcha…………………… …motorists in Gorey often get that sinking feeling when the barrier goes own behind them in the town’s Civic Centre Car Park as they find themselves trapped inside with no space to park their car. And there isI no way out without paying the full parking fee of €2. The motorist then has to find a space elsewhere in the town and pay a second time for the privilage of parking once. This happens despite the fact that the notice outside the Council’s car park displays a notice telling motorists that there Is space available. However, the set up is not a cleverly devised cunning ploy by local Council bosses to raise more money. Instead it has all to do with the fact that the Council actually

provides free parking in the facility after 6pm each day. To achieve this they lift the barrier and leave it up overnight. This free parking period has the effect of confusing the electronic counting system so when it proudly proclaims ‘spaces available’ luring unsuspecting motorists behind the barrier in reality there is no space to park and you have to fork out

special needs of family members and it can also be used, with proper advice, as a tax planning opportunity. If you do not make a Will you lose your chance to appoint an executor to handle your affairs and your estate will be divided

the cash to escape. Concerns about the problem were raised by Independent councillor Mary Farrell at the October meeting of Gorey Municipal District Council and the problem was explained by Town Manager Amanda Byrne. Now the situation is to be examined with a view to correcting the problem.

in accordance with the law and not necessarily in the manner which you might have wished. So it is important to make a Will to ensure you have control of your affairs after your death.

Fire tragedy funerals exposed the divide between Travellers and Settled Community The full horror of the fire in Carrickmines last month came home to people in Wexford town when the funerals of five of the victims took place locally. It is one thing watching events on television and think you realise the enormity of what has taken place but it is another thing entirely to witness at first hand the grief of those left behind when virtually an entire family has been wiped out. To see the five caskets, including three small white ones, lined up on the altar at Bride Street’s Church of the Assumption, was really heartbreaking. No one who visited the church in the hours that the Remains of the five members of the Connors family rested there could have been unmoved by what they witnessed. No surprisingly the grief of the family was overwhelming

but they were greatly comforted by the solidarity shown by the local and national civic leaders who joined them for the prayer service. In particular they appreciated the personal attendance of the Taoiseach who walked in the cortege with Wexford’s Mayor Ger Carthy, Ministers Brendan Howlin, James Reilly and Paul Kehoe. The funeral of the Carrickmines victims brought a number of things to the fore not least the living conditions in which many members of the Travelling Community live. But it also illustrated in pretty stark terms the huge divide there is between the settled and travelling communities. That sense of divide was very evident in Wexford at the time of the funerals. While the Connors family were saying a

final farewell to their family members following the greatest fire tragedy to hit the country in over three decades, much of the rest of the town went about its business as usual. It is difficult to believe that this would have been the case if the victims had not been members of the Travelling Community but that is the reality of 2015 Ireland. It was striking too that the fire victims went to their place of rest in Crosstown in spectacular caskets transported in a combination of horse drawn and traditional hearses It seemed somewhat ironic that in death these young parents and children lay in highly elaborate caskets which most Wexford families simply could not afford, while in life they were forced to live for years in ‘temporary’ wooden huts.

Keep Off the (All-Weather) Grass There has been a row simmering for some time in Gorey about the fundraising efforts of the local Bunscoil Loreto to pay for an allweather hockey pitch. There have been rumblings and grumblings about the fundraising for ages but it has now burst into the open mainly because councillors feel they have been given the two fingers by the school which is absolute in its view that the pitch should be for school use and school use alone. The problem for most councillors is that they think raising funds for such a facility is a bit of a waste if

it is not going to be available to the wider community and for a good while they have been concerned that many of those who are being asked to contribute are not aware that the pitch would be solely for use by the pupils of the school. Well I don’t think they need worry about that any longer because the issue has now been given a pretty big public airing and no one can any longer be in any doubt that this will not be a public facility The other problem for councillors is, of course, the fact that the school’s fundraising for the pitch

comes at the very time that the Council wants to develop an all-weather facility in the Town Park, but is finding it difficult to raise the cash. If the school can raise the money for their own facility then good luck to them but it does seem a shame that a facility which could be open to the entire community cannot be developed in Gorey. And I’d say the school would not want to arrive knocking on the doors of councillors looking for support for other projects any time soon, because they just might be disappointed by the response.

Think before you get a dog WRAP A COAT AROUND YOUR HOUSE!

Contact Michael: 087 3911659 Email: mginsulationgroup@gmail.com

With Christmas just around the corner many people will be thinking of getting a little dog as a present for a little boy or girl. Well whatever you do think very carefully before you act because these little dogs have a way of growing into rather large animals and very soon they are not wanted by the

child and are considered a nuisance in the household. Wexford has a shocking record when it comes to unwanted dogs and more of them end up being euthanized in this county than in any other county in the country. Dogs make great and loyal pets and can really become a central part of

any family, but they do take looking after and the bigger the dog the greater amount of looking after they require. So remember if you are thinking of buying that dog look beyond the thrill of Christmas morning and don’t add to those dreadful statistics for the county in 2016.

The

Preparing for life after the election? This is the picture we used on the front page of the last edition of The Chronicle. It shows three men who sit around the cabinet table each with shovel in hand digging the earth in a field just outside Enniscorthy. Shovelling clay is of course not their normal job and the suits are a bit of a

giveaway. Ministers Howlin, Kehoe and Donohoe took up the shovels for a photo call to mark the start of work on the Enniscorthy by-pass. But did the photo generate the warm welcome that the ministers might have expected. Were people grateful that after years of neglect something big was

about to happen in Enniscorthy-----not at all? Barely had the photo been published than the wags were suggesting that the experience would be good for the Ministers when they were looking for something to do after the election. Oh you ungrateful lot, that’s all I can say.

Enniscorthy’s clean sweep They obviously take care to have their chimneys well swept in Enniscorthy. I noticed in the detailed reports on the activities of the Fire Brigade, regularly presented to councillors,

that Enniscorthy had the lowest number of call outs for Chimney Fires in the county in the eight months to August. There were eighteen chimney fires in

Enniscorthy, a fraction of the forty nine recorded in Wexford, while New Ross had thirty nine in Gorey twenty three. Just thought you’d like to know.

Not as ‘well known’ as he thinks I see where a man described as a ‘well known’ footballer in the UK has successfully applied to the High Court to reduce the level of maintenance he has to pay for his two children. . The footballer, who was not named, was ordered to pay £30,000 in maintenance for each of his two children but argued on appeal to the

High Court that it was excessive. The children aged five and ten each have different mothers, and the ‘well known’ footballer said the £60,000 annual payments represented one third of his gross income. The family court judge didn’t think much of his argument saying he was more interested in his own lifestyle than the welfare

of his children. But what intrigued me were his gross earnings. If he is a ‘well known’ footballer as the court report suggested then he would be earning £180,00 in half a week, not a full year--------so something doesn’t add up. I’d suggest that he is not as ‘well known’ as he imagines.

The strange world of Tidy Towns The Tidy Towns inspectors have come, gone and reported their findings. Generally this year there was good news across the county, but all our towns and villages have some way to go before they challenge for the top spots in the country. Nevertheless well done to

all those who have been out over the last few months helping to make their local environment look more attractive. And while I am on the subject of Tidy Towns I have to agree with the comments of Wexford Councillor Jim Moore when he questioned

some of the headings under which marks are awarded. For example ‘wildlife, habitats and natural amenities’ and ‘sustainable waste and resource management’ Jim wondered what these had to do with Tidy Town and I think many will agree with him.
