Bypass Day ‘This is a momentous day for Enniscorthy’ declared Minister Paul Kehoe as the sod on the Enniscorthy Bypass was officially turned by himself, Transport Minister Pascal Donohoe and Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin, on Friday last. He said it would shorten journey times to Dublin as well as easing traffic congestion in the town itself. The new section of the M11 will start 1.5km north of Oylegate and extend to the east of Enniscorthy, Ferns and Camolin connecting with the existing M11 at Clough, south of Gorey. The scheme also involves a new 8km road to the west of Enniscorthy linking Scarawalsh to Templescoby on the N30.

Good news for the education sector – D’Arcy Fine Gael Senator Michael D’Arcy, says the announcement of smaller class sizes and more teachers in Budget 2016 are very positive measures. “The education budget will see €144 million in additional investment next year, allowing for a number of initiatives that will benefit students and teachers. Two of the key initiatives are smaller class sizes and more teaching places. “Educational research shows that smaller classes lead to better learning outcomes for pupils, particularly in primary schools. Smaller numbers give teachers more time to work with individual pupils. From next September average class sizes will decrease from 28 pupils to 1 teacher, to 27 pupils to 1 teacher. This is a very

positive development. “Budget 2016 also includes provision for 2260 additional teachers, which will be provided in primary and postprimary schools. This consists of: • 300 teachers at primary level to reduce class sizes • 550 teachers, mainly at post-primary level, to enhance guidance counselling and school leadership • 810 mainstream teachers to address demographic demand • 600 resource teachers to address demographic demand “Today’s Budget includes the payment of a minor works grant in 2015 and the beginning of a new €80 million two year summer works programme.

Schools will also be invited to apply for a new summer works scheme which will commence next year. The scheme will see €80 million invested in enhancing schools between 2016 and 2017 – half of this amount in each year. “This Budget is a very positive one for the education sector and as someone who worked within the sector for many years I warmly welcome the investment. “The last few budgets have been hard, but they have made it possible for Ireland to exit the bailout, reduce our debts, and move into a real recovery. The top priority of this year’s budget is to keep that recovery going, while providing relief and better services for the Irish people.”

Gorey Relief Road Works begin Work finally began on Gorey’s Inner Relief Road site at Pearsons Brook/Hunters Green last week. A roundabout has now been confirmed for the Hollyfort Road/Pearsons Brook junction and two ramps are to be installed in Garden City over coming weeks. Local Sinn Fein councillor Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin who has been campaigning for the works since his election last year welcomed the news.: He said: "I've been strongly focussing on children's safety

since getting elected. The slow pace of improvements can often be frustrating as it is for parents and residents. All of these estates along the inner relief road need ramps, safety measures and high visibility signage." "These two ramps, which will be installed just up from John Bass tyres in the Garden City, while long overdue, will be very welcome, especially when this Inner Relief Road opens. The road is a death trap at present and has seen several accidents in recent years."

A Fianna Fail solution to a Fianna Fail problem The overall line up for the general election in Co. Wexford is almost complete following the Fianna Fail convention which selected Gorey councillor Malcolm Byrne and Enniscorthy based James Browne to run for the party. There had been intense speculation for weeks about

the likely outcome of the convention amid strong indications that party headquarters was very anxious to have Byrne on the ticket. However, there were fears that the strong Browne machine, which holds considerable sway in the party, would be used to deny him a place.

To overcome the strength of the Browne camp headquarters came up with a bizarre formula which split the county in two--------but not north/south as the local organisation had recommended. Instead the split was between east and west, with South Wexford joining North Wexford on the

east and Ennisocrthy/New Ross making up the west. This meant that Byrne had no opposition for the ‘east’ position because he was the only one nominated from the area, while all the other nominated candidates had to battle it out for the second place. In the event Browne emerged the clear winner for

the west.. Despite the retirement of veteran John Browne the party is happy that it has a

strong ticket facing next year’s poll. Both Byrne and Browne were local election poll toppers last year.

Enniscorthy counts down to “Brooklyn” ‘Brooklyn’ fever is building in Enniscorthy as preparations continue for the film premiere of Colm Toibin’s Number 1 New York Times best-selling novel of the same name. With just over two weeks to the premiere in Enniscorthy’s Riverside Park Hotel, Wexford County Council’s Enniscorthy District Manager Padraig O’ Gorman says it is all systems go as the town gears up for what is certain to be an occasion of glitz and glamour on a scale never before experienced in Enniscorthy. Media interest in the premiere is unprecedented with many of the national newspapers, television stations and radio outlets having applied for accreditation to cover the event. Security is expected to be tight for the screening with Lionsgate U.K. the film’s distributors, sending their own security team to augment Riverside Park Hotel security and locally based Garda personnel. District Manager O’ Gorman is emphasising, however, that while a tight security presence is essential, it will be very discreet and will in no way detract from the enjoyment of the evening. Guests on the night include leading actress Saoirse Ronan, Author Colm Toibin on whose book the film is based, Minister

for the Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys, T.D., His Excellency Mr. John O’ Malley, American Ambassador to Ireland, together with representatives of the film’s production team and representatives of Lionsgate

U.K. the film’s distributors. Government Chief Whip Paul Kehoe T.D. will also be among the guests, as will Mr. Mark Redmond, Chief Executive of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ireland. Preparations for the

No evidence to support claims of Community Alert increasing crime in Co. Wexford makes a difference A perception that there is a massive increase in crime with rural areas being particularly targeted is not supported by figures produced by the Gardai for Co. Wexford where many headline crimes are running at below the national average. And Chief Superintendent John Roche has told members of the Joint Policing Committee that while he considered all of Co. Wexford to be rural there was no evidence of a greater level of crime in country areas outside the main towns. In fact it appears from the figures that there are more burglaries in the urban areas of the county than in rural parishes.

And despite the public perception the reality is that overall burglary numbers have in fact declined since 2012. The relatively positive picture of crime in the county was presented as the Garda boss revealed that Garda numbers in the county are on the way up again after several years of decline. There are twelve more Gardai policing county Wexford than there were at the start of the year. With a force of two hundred and sixty two Gardai in the county there is one officer for every five hundred and fifty five people. The boost in numbers has allowed the Chief Supt. to strengthen the number of

officers dealing with drugs issues and this appears to have led to a greater detection of drugs for supply during the past few months. And he told Councillor Fergie Kehoe that when support from outside the county was required to deal with drug issues it was available. And Supt. Roche told Councillor Ger Carthy that he hoped to fill some rural vacancies for Garda Sergeants

before the end of the year but he could not be specific. There are currently vacancies in Rosslare, Kilmore, Duncannon and Taghmon, he revealed.

Many homeowners issue open invitation to criminals Lock your doors, close your windows and don’t issue an open invitation to thieves to enter your house----------that was the simple message from the Wexford Garda Chief as he appealed to householders to help defeat the criminals this winter by making it more difficult for them to carry out simple robberies. With the clock going back this weekend the evenings

will be darker and that is the time of the year when thefts from private homes spike. Under the cover of darkness thieves spend their time searching for houses with easy access and evidence shows that many householders virtually issue a ‘come in and rob me’ invitation to criminals. Supt. Roche revealed that most break-ins from houses

happen as a result of windows being left open or rear doors being left unlocked. Often people are in the house but do not hear the intruder and know nothing of an incident until they discover a handbag or a wallet has been stolen. His basic message was that people can do a lot themselves to prevent robberies from their homes by ensuring that simple security measures are

in place. He made his comments at a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee for the county in response to comments from Councillor Barbara Ann Murphy who said that while she had been canvassing recently she detected a great deal of fear in rural areas with people afraid to open their doors.

Community Alert Schemes in rural areas and the recently launched community text schemes are a great support to Gardai and are playing in increasingly important role in the battle to beat criminals. That was the message from Garda Supt. John Roche at a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee when he replied to a query from Councillor Kathleen

Domestic violence involves all family members Domestic violence is an increasing problem for Gardai in county Wexford, it has been revealed and the vast majority of the incidents involve violence against women. However, a full range of domestic incidents have been recorded, Garda Chief John Roche told members of the Joint Policing Committee. These incidents could involve a father and son, a mother and daughter, father and daughter or siblings

with parents in fear, he said. Generally two members of the Force went to such incidents but in many instances no offence occurred. However, where there was evidence of an offence the Gardai had the power to arrest and they used this. However, in terms of prosecutions and court appearances he said that in many cases people were not prepared to make a complaint.

Locals commit more crime than outside gangs Not all criminal gangs who operate in Co. Wexford are from Dublin with many home grown criminals also active on the ground, members of the Joint Policing Committee have been told. But as fears grow that the improvement in the road connection between Dublin and Wexford will encourage more city based criminals to target the South East Chief Supt. John Roche has outlined a number of practical ways of helping to deal with the problem. He said that there was a full camera system on the roads out of Dublin so every single vehicle could be

Codd Nolan. Cllr Codd Nolan had asked if the Community Alert schemes made a difference in areas in which they operated. Chief Supt. Roche said they did make a big difference and he praised the great community spirit evident in many local areas and he said the support which the Gardai received from local communities was a great help.

tracked on leaving the Capital. However, where the problem arose was when they left the motorway network to make their way into rural areas of the county. He said the provision of cameras at all exits from motorways would be a huge benefit in tracking criminal gangs. But he said it was important to remember that not all crime in the county was committed by visiting gangs ‘It’s not all about Dublin gangs, locals are responsible for a large per centage of the crime in Co. Wexford’, he said.

Nearly 20,000 dogs in Co. Wexford have no licence Just over 7,000 of the estimated 25,000 plus dogs in Co. Wexford are licenced, it has been revealed. And the number of licenced dogs in the county has been steadily declining in recent years with a total of 10,470 licenced dogs in 2010 and just 7,468 last year, according to figures released by Wexford Co. Council. A full review of the Control of Dogs Act as it operates in the county was presented to members of the Co. Council at their October meeting and the report revealed that Co. Wexford’s sole Dog Warden, John Colfer, is the busiest dog warden in Ireland. There was warm praise from councillors for Mr Colfer’s efforts but concerns about the number of unlicenced and stray dogs around the county and also the problem of dog fouling in urban areas and on the beaches. Cllr Oliver Walsh said there should be a second full time Dog Warden employed by the Council and he believed that the position could be self financing in time if it led to more dogs being licenced.

Cllr Larry O’Brien said that it was up to councillors themselves to make their decision on a second warden and if they wanted one they should provide for it in the budget and he had a warning for dog owners who did no licence their animals. If they did not have a licence any insurance they had on the dog was invalid, he said. Wexford Co. Council has collected the most stray and unwanted dogs of any county in Ireland each year since 2010. In 2014 there three hundred more dogs collected in Co. Wexford than in Clare, the second county on the list. The 1,287 dogs collected in Co. Wexford was more than twice the total collected in Meath and nearly six times the number of dogs collected in Co. Wicklow, both counties with similar populations to Wexford. And the county also put to sleep more unwanted and stray dogs than any other county with a total of four hundred and forty six dogs being euthanized during the twelve months to December last.

But when sheer volumes are disregarded and the number of dogs being put to sleep as a per cent age of those collected is calculated Wexford fares better. However, the fact that so many dogs are put down in the county is not something that Wexford can be proud of with many of the dogs that are destroyed in very poor condition or involved in attacks on sheep or people The Dog Warden service receives around 4,500 calls per annum from the public about dog issues and the Council has identified a number of areas of concern including an increasing number of attacks involving restricted breeds such as Japanese akitas and bull terriers. Cllr Paddy Kavanagh said the new Dog Micro Chipping regulations which come into effect next year was a positive move while Councillor Johnny Mythen said the feasibility of having a dog warden operate outside normal working hours should be examined because this was the time many offences were committed.

‘Three Sisters’ bid may have lasting benifits The co-operation of the three main local authorities in the South East in the preparation of the bid for the Capital of Culture under the Three Sisters title may have lasting benefits for the region, members of Wexford Co. Council have been told. Michael Quinn, Director of Services at Waterford City and Co. Council was in Wexford last week to update members on the progress of the bid and he made it clear that it was not just about winning the Capital of Culture for the region but

about creating something which would have a lasting impact in the county. And the Chief Executive of Wexford Co. Wexford Co. Council proudly supporting Wexford Festival Opera

A night for families as fireworks launch Wexford Festival Travel to town early to avoid traffic delays and follow instructions

Pat Sheridan’s photo from 2014 captures the full colour of the fireworks display which attracts more than 20,000 people to the opening of the Wexford Festival each year

For well over half a century people from all over the world have been coming to Wexford for the annual festival of opera and the event provides a huge economic boost to the town each October. However, while the events in the Opera House and the various recitals around the town attract a national and worldwide audience as well as locals, for many Wexford

families the spectacle and excitement of festival opening night is the key attraction of the twelve night event. For generations children have eagerly looked forward to the late October evening when everyone gathers on the quays to enjoy the spectacle that is the annual festival opening night fireworks display. The local authorities have

been supporting the event for several years and this valuable financial assistance has enabled the opening to be expanded and developed over the past decade or so to become a spectacular evening of family entertainment. The message to anyone travelling to opening night is to get to the town early. The quays close at 6pm and traffic restrictions will apply on

several other streets as well. The sheer numbers attending the opening result in long traffic tailbacks from the town so to beat them get there early. There will be plenty of entertainment on the quays to keep everyone amused and entertained before the speeches get underway around 7.15pm and as soon as the final words are spoken a spectacular explosion of

Howlin to open festival with Mayor Carthy Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin TD, will officially open the Festival, alongside the Mayor of Wexford, Cllr. Ger Carthy, and Festival Chairman, Ger Lawlor, on Wexford’s quayside prior to the fireworks display.. Those attending the opening ceremony are advised to come

early as traffic restrictions will be in place from 6pm to 9pm. Extra parking and stewards will also be on hand to assist. There will be designated accessible parking spaces provided at the junction of Crescent Quay and Custom House Quay. An accessible viewing area for Blue Badge holders and their assistants will be provided close by

Blue Badge holders need to be in the parking space before 6pm as the quay will be closed to traffic after that time. A first aid centre will be located on the quay near end of the Bridge and the ‘lost child’ area will be at the back of the stage. Those viewing the fireworks from Ferrybank are advised that there are a limited number of parking

spaces available on the green area, but please note, access to Ferrybank quay will not be available as this is still a working Quay. The organising committee would also like to remind people to park in designated carparks and not to obstruct traffic, as cars parked indiscriminately may be towed away and may result in a fine being imposed.

colour will thunder across the sky over the harbour. With wonderful music to add to the occasion the atmosphere will again, as in previous years, be electric, and provide magical and unforgettable moments for everyone, but particularly for the younger members of the audience. When the formal entertainment ends on the quay front many families will do what families before them have done for decades----------take a walk along the Main Street to enjoy the window displays before heading to a food premises or a pub for a bite to eat or something to drink before returning home tired, but satisfied. As the fireworks fall silent the orchestra will be tuning up at the National Opera House and putting in the final preparations before Koanga formally opens proceedings. For the following twelve days and nights Wexford town will be the centre of the

cultural universe as far as Ireland is concerned. Every bit of space available will be taken up for exhibitions of arts, crafts, recitals, dance performances, sports events, drama, shows, singing pubs and much more. The details are all available in the guide to the fringe events which is a must have for festival goers. With the recession beginning to lift business for the exhibitors is expected to show an improvement this year and the numbers coming to the town are certain to be well up on last year given the scale of advance booking of accommodation and tickets for various events. The message to everyone is that there is something, somewhere in the town or you--------so get out and enjoy this annual great extravaganza of culture, music, drama, art, sport and all have fun.

One particular image that stands out for me has to be the aerial shot of the Raven Point. In this image you can see from the point of the Raven to Cahore point, a truely awe inspiring image. The most exciting thing for me is the response I get from the people that see my work. I look forward to welcoming you all to the Pat Sheridan Photographic Gallery', said Pat.

Lifestyle €1.7m funding for Wexford Sports Programme Minister Paul Kehoe has welcomed the announcement of €1,723,634 for Wexford organisations under the Sports Capital Programme 2015. “I am delighted to see this funding going to organisations that bring so much to the towns and villages throughout Wexford, promoting health, fitness, participation and community involvement. These groups are constantly striving to maintain sufficient funding both to sustain themselves and to continue developing, so this funding will go a long way towards alleviating that burden and helping them to improve what they offer.” “I have worked closely with a number of these clubs in preparing, submitting and supporting their applications and am delighted that they are receiving the recognition that they deserve to make the improvements that they need to their club. “The beauty of the Sports Capital Programme is that it can benefit large and small groups alike, with the amounts varying based on their need. I am looking forward to seeing this funding put to use

throughout Wexford and the continued development of Sports and Community Organisations in our county. “The economic recovery allowed this Government to re-instate the Sports Capital Programme, after it was closed by Fianna Fáil during the recession. We understand the importance of sport to communities around the country and the imperative to fund it. Money spent on sport, is money saved on healthcare down the road. According to the Department of Sport, 90% of Sports Capital recipients say it has helped them to increase the numbers of people involved in sport. “Fine Gael is keenly aware of the impact the economic downturn has had on communities throughout Ireland and we are working to ensure that the economic recovery spreads to all parts of Ireland. This Government is committed to supporting local communities, with actions and funding like these Sports Capital grants.” The Breakdown of Funding provided to Wexford Organisations is as follows:

Solace Review Solace is a new thriller about a former doctor with psychic abilities (Played by Anthony Hopkins), hired by the FBI to catch a serial killer. The movie had a bit of a convoluted history before it even began production. It is based on a script that was originally going to be used as a sequel to Se7en, with Morgan Freeman’s character in the main role, but they eventually decided to use that script as a standalone film and Solace is the end result of that. All Serial killer films must have a hook or gimmick regarding their villain and this one has an interesting one: a killer who kills his victims via a painless method, and out of a desire to prevent further suffering. There are many twists and turns in the plot as John Clancy (Anthony Hopkins Character) and two FBI agents, Joe Merriweather (Played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Katherine Cowles (Played by Abbie Cornish), attempt to foil this murderer and discover how he

is committing these crimes. At first, I thought this would be a clichéd, hackneyed, affair, Judging by the way it started, with The FBI trying to vain to convince a jaded old man to come out of retirement, but it developed into something a lot more

interesting then what the first impressions would tell you. Admittedly, the film does owe a lot to its influences such as “Silence of The Lambs”, with Anthony Hopkins even coming across as like a good guy version of Hannibal Lector at times. This is particularly apparent in one scene where John Clancy does a psychic psychological examination on Abbie Cornishs Character, Hopkins delivering a lecteresque speech in the process. However despite that, this film isn’t actually a rip-off of any film, it’s a unique entity with its own concerns, as I’ll explain now. One thing that I thought stood out about the film was its visuals. Whenever John Clancy has a

psychic vision or whenever they visit a crime scene, the flashes of imagery that come up on the screen are surreal, striking, and effective. Some of it may fall under the category of generic spooky imagery, like the crucifixes of light that flash up in Johns Visions, but in context they work so it doesn’t matter. Anthony Hopkins never overacts in the main role, he stays the focus in an understated and effective performance throughout. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Abbie Cornish also give decent performances in their roles as the two FBI agents, meaning that you are never distracted from the changes in the story by bad or unrealistic acting from the three leads. Overall, this film is a decent and well made example of its genre and worth a watch for the average cinema goer unless you find the subject matter weird or offputting. For fans of murder mystery type thrillers or Antony Hopkins, it comes especially recommended.

Howlin runs again, Kelly is SD candidate Former Labour Party leader, Eamon Gilmore travelled to Wexford on Friday night to attend the selection convention or Brendan Howlin who is to stand as a Labour candidate in Wexford again. “I congratulate Brendan Howlin, on his selection as Labour’s candidate again in Wexford for the General Election’ said Mr Gilmore . “I congratulate him also, for this week’s good budget. It was a budget that puts beyond any doubt the fact that Ireland’s economy is recovering; that the period of

austerity is behind us; and that the Irish people, whose sacrifices made recovery possible, can now look forward to better days ahead. “This week’s budget was made possible, by the four hard years of work by Labour in this Government. The difficult decisions which we made saved this State from financial ruin and brought Ireland out of its worst economic crisis since independence. The economic recovery has been jobs-led, as Labour wished; it has been achieved while also increasing the national

minimum wage by 20%, building new schools, maintaining core rates of social welfare and continuing to deliver the public services which people need’, he added.. Meanwhile an unsuccessful candidate in last year local elections in the Wexford District is to contest the general election on behalf o the newly formed Social Democrat Party. Leonard Kelly’s candidature was due to be formally announced on Tuesday morning.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!! Celebrating Wexford Youths great season Ferrycarrig Park, the home of football in Wexford, will host Premier Division football next season as Wexford Youths FC secured a first ever league title and promotion to the top tier of Irish football. FAI and Airtricity officials presented the League Trophy and individual player medals to Shane Keegan’s team in front of a capacity Ferrycarrig Park crowd last Friday, following the 4-1 demolition of Shelbourne. Manager Shane Keegan was virtually unheard of in Wexford when he took the reins at Wexford Youths 4 years ago. Today he is widely regarded as one of the best young coaches in the country. Since Shane took over there

have been huge improvements, year on year, both on the pitch and behind the scenes. He has assembled a background staff that have instilled confidence and levels of professionalism in their team that will be relied on as Youths embark in their first Premier Division campaign. The playing squad are amateurs who do not get paid. They train 3 times a week and then travel the country to play for their club. All for the love of the beautiful game. Wexford has its star players. Danny Furlong’s 28 league goals went a long way to winning the league and yet they are not a one man team. Even when a large number of first team players travelled to South

Korea to represent Ireland at the World Community Games during the summer, Wexford picked up an amazing 3 wins from 3 without them. The players are predominantly from the South East. Shane has picked up the best talent from Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford & Wicklow. We have a very strong relationship with Carlow Institute of Technology and their Sports Science Programme with many of our players studying in Carlow. The few players who have come from farther afield have been scouted, studied, and checked to make sure they are the right personality to fit seamlessly into a close knit squad.

There are many impressive statistics that the Youths can boast this season. Danny Furlong is now the Division One, all-time record goalscorer. They have beaten all teams in their division both home and away. They are currently on a 7 league game winning streak. Fans have been flocking to Ferrycarrig Park over the last few weeks. While the average attendances have been around 300 people, the last two home games have seen sell out crowds come through the turnstiles. Youths have a very dedicated core Supporters Club who have been following their team around the Country all season. Whether a game was being played in

Ballybofey or Cobh, the Youth Army was present, flags flying, chanting their heros all the way. Ask any of the players, the difference it makes having the 12th man in the stand at away games cannot be dismissed. Off the pitch, preparations for a first season in the Premier Division are already underway. Major improvements around the stadium have been pinpointed and the club have already undertaken a consultation process with the fans at to what improvements they would like to see and how the club can improve their match day experience. The future surrounding the ownership of Ferrycarrig Park

should hopefully be resolved in the coming months with a deal between the FAI and the Wexford League in its final stages. Ferrycarrig Park is already a fantastic asset to football in the county. It will be superb when it becomes a Centre of Football Excellence with Wexford Youths as anchor tenants and available for Wexford League and the Oscar Traynor teams. It is a very exciting time for football fans in Wexford.

GER WALSH Together again, the trio who were once the main men in Wexford politics They will very soon be three faces from the past but there was a time when this trio held centre stage in politics in Co Wexford and between them they have clocked up over seventy years of Dail service and in the process banked fairly sizeable pension pots to help them through their twilight years. When John Browne steps down at the next general election all three will be exTDs, but for decades they were very strong vote getters. Their Dail service began back in the early 1960s when a very young Lorcan Allen was first elected. He had served for two decades before Hugh Byrne came on the scene in 1981. Byrne made it to the Dail by just nineteen votes in his first election and his success was at the expense of the late Sean Browne, uncle of John. But Byrne barely had time to catch his breath in Leinster House when they were back on the campaign trail again in February 1982, following the collapse of the Fine Gael Labour government on the budget. Despite his short Dail

service Byrne had worked hard and was elected much more comfortably in his second election which was quite a big success story for Fianna Fail in the county with both Lorcan Allen and Sean Browne also being returned for the party. But nine months later they were back on the road again and the three elections in quick succession took their toll on the long serving Allen who was defeated for the second Fianna Fail seat by a youthful looking newcomer named John Browne, who stepped in following the retirement of his uncle. The Gorey man attempted a comeback five years later but this time it was another newcomer, Brendan Howlin, who denied him a seat. Hugh Byrne subsequently

lost his seat in 1989 but regained it three years later and served until his defeat in 2002 after which he retired from politics. From his election in 1982 John Browne never tasted defeat in an election, successfully defending his seat on seven occasions, his most difficult election coming in 2011 when he finished outside the seat places on the first count but made it back to the Dail on transfers. On the two occasions when

Allan, Browne and Byrne were part of the Fianna Fail ticket in 1982 and 1987 the party was of course fighting for three seats. When the county goes to the polls next year Fianna Fail will only have two candidates and will almost certainly have to be satisfied with a single seat. How times change. By the way the three veterans, who are rarely seen together in pubic these days, were out for the FF convention in Enniscorthy last week.

For many Budget may be too little too late After seven years of cuts and indeed hardship for many families and individuals members of the government were clapping themselves on their collective backs in the wake of the 2016 budget which will actually put some money back in people’s pockets Ministers have been arguing strongly that but for their prudent management of the crises over the past five years there would be no money at all to give back. There is no doubt that this administration deserves credit for bringing the country back from the brink and there is some evidence that things are beginning to get better with more people in employment and growth rates being experienced now

which were unimaginable just a few years ago. Ministers Howlin and Noonan are right to point out that if the options championed by some of the opposition parties had been taken then we would be in a very different place. However, it may be a stretch to expect the public at large to show gratitude to the government for what they are now putting back in their pockets. It is true that some communities would never be satisfied and indeed there are people who want to pay for nothing but expect top class services. But leaving these people aside there are many in both urban and rural communities who feel, rightly or wrongly, that the cuts over the past five years, were imposed in

a manner which brought greater hardship to the less well off, and that includes many working families.. They are very exercised about having to pay Property and Water charges while at the same time acing reductions in a range of social welfare payments, increased prescription charges, cuts imposed on carers, reductions in services for the handicapped and the reductions imposed on things like free telephones for the elderly. The elderly do not see the addition of â‚Ź3 per week to their pension as going any real distance towards making up for the cuts they have suffered while those on low wages believe that the USC changes have benefited the better off to a greater

extent than themselves. The government can argue otherwise and there is some merit in their argument but they will have a difficulty winning back the support of these sectors who feel they were badly let down over the past few years. That said there are many sectors of society who will have reason to welcome the budget changes with farmers, those in business and people in better paid jobs all getting decent relief. However, the government may have a bit more difficulty winning over those who, rightly or wrongly, feel they were totally sacrificed as part of the process to rebuild the economy over the past five years.

Residents’ protest was in poor taste The appalling fire tragedy in Carrickmines was one of those events of such terrible scale that it caused the nation to pause and take stock. It was really terrible to think that so many people including small children had perished in the inferno. Many people in Wexford will have been especially affected by the tragedy because some of the victims have strong local connections and their funerals are to take place in the town. In the aftermath of the tragedy there has been some discussion about the quality of the accommodation provided for the travelling community on sites like the one in Carrickmines and the fact that an nationwide inspection of all such facilities is to be undertaken

is very welcome. It was, however, very distressing to see residents in a nearby estate object to the provision of an emergency site to accommodate people from the stricken camp. While one can understand why people might have reservations about a halting site being opened beside their homes in normal circumstances in the absence of discussions, surely in this instance the proper thing to do was to welcome these people in as they recover from the trauma of the fire and sort out problems later. The protest was ill judged and sent out an appalling impression of the residents who came across as heartless in the circumstances.

Why Garda boss refuses to ticket cars parked illegally around Wexford Park The parking of cars illegally around Wexford GAA Park on match days is a big problem for local residents and despite various efforts to deal with the problem no real solution has been found. The current Mayor of Wexford Borough District, Ger Carthy, is now to have a go at trying to bring some relief for the residents and he is probably better placed than most because apart from his role as First Citizen of the District he is also and Officer of the GAA Board so he brings a lot to the table. However, one interesting thing to emerge is the fact that it would be possible to deal with the matter by way of summonses with a team of Gardai going to the area and placing a ticket on every offending vehicle. Many residents and others believe that this would provide a fairly rapid solution to the problem. However, the Garda

Chief Superintendent says he is not going to send Gardai out to do this because it would result in a flood of complaints the following Monday morning. At one level I can understand where the Garda Chief is coming from but if you were to take this thinking to its logical conclusion it would have unthinkable consequences. Say for example a particularl community decided to flood the station with complains if a checkpoint for drunk driving was set up in their locality would you stop checking for drunk drivers?. I think not. So maybe a few weeks of summonses on offending cars around Wexford Park is the way to go.

Oulart look too strong

Busy month at Tesco New Ross

This is the biggest weekend in Wexford Hurling when the champions of 2015 are crowned with the Co. Final at Wexford Park. The big question is whether or not St. Martin’s can lift their heads following their defeat in the football decider last Saturday. In Oulart/The Ballagh they face the most successful hurling team in Co. Wexford over the past decade and this young St. Martins side will certainly go into the final as underdogs. But personally I think St. Martins have everything to play for and they certainly have a chance of toppling the favourites if they take their opportunities by running at their opponents when they get the chance and then defending strongly when the pressure comes on. With both teams having good wins in their semi-finals a lot of people believe that we are in for a very good final and let us hope that we do get a good game. the likes of Keith Rossiter, David Redmond, Garret Sinnott and Rory Jacob and they will certainly be looking to this experience to get them over the line. On the other hand St.Martins have a lot of young talent and enthusiasm in their side but it will take a really big effort from the likes of Ciaran Lynn, Daithi Hayes, Daithi Waters and Jack O’Connor I think it will be a close game and it is a contest I would love to see St, Martins winning because I think it would be great for the game of hurling in the county. But I think in the end Oulart will be too strong for them, but here’s hoping that it is a good game, Meanwhile, let me congratulate the men from St. James on winning the football; Glynn on their success in the intermediate football, Naomh Eanna on winning the intermediate hurling and a big well done too to Billy Walsh who steered our boxers to such great success on the world stage over the past few weeks.

County Wexford Youth Film Project celebrates its 10th year County Wexford Youth Film Project is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The project was initiated in 2005 by Wexford County Council, in partnership with St. Michael’s Theatre and The Arts Council. Hundreds of young people from across the county have participated since then - writing, acting in and shooting their own short films. The County Wexford Youth Film Project is based in St. Michael’s Theatre, New Ross. The project trains young people aged 13 – 20 in the art of filmmaking and provides them with an opportunity for creative expression through an accessible and exciting medium. All of the films produced are either written or devised by the participants, and reflect themes and issues relevant to the young peoples’ lives.

The project was initiated during 2005 as a partnership initiative between The Arts Department of Wexford County Council, The Arts

Council and St. Michael’s Theatre. Filmmaker Terence White currently directs the programme. Each year, films from the project receive their premiere

at our Wexford Widescreen Youth Film Festival in St. Michael’s Theatre, which was launched in 2012, and project films have also been screened at international film festivals and on television. The project has always made accessibility and inclusion one of its main aims. There have been several integrated projects over the years, including productions involving young Travellers, teenagers with a physical or intellectual and projects involving asylum seekers.

Courses cover all of the key areas involved in filmmaking: screen writing, camera operation, sound recording, acting for screen, directing and postproduction. The project has expanded to other areas in the county over the last few years, with courses also taking place in the Presentation Centre in Enniscorthy and in Gorey Library. Any teenagers interested in taking part can email wexfordyouthfilm@gmail.co m or call l St. Michael’s Theatre on 051 421255. For more information about County Wexford Youth Film Project visit facebook.com/WexfordYouth Film, where all the free filmmaking courses are publicised.

You may even get inspiration from one of the many events that are featured in the 2015 Festival Fringe, Wexford Festival Opera or Spiegeltent Festival. The choice is yours!!
