Clash over plan to sell council houses to tenants The long awaited new tenant purchase scheme which allows long term local authority tenants to purchase their local authority homes at a discounted price has been warmly welcomed by the vast majority of members of the Co. Council, but People Before Profit Councillor, Deirdre Wadding has opposed the scheme and alleged that it amounted to the privatisation of council houses. However, her description of the scheme in that manner and her analysis that it would reduce the number of local authority houses available to qualifying home seekers was rejected by the Council’s Chief Executive. Cllr Wadding had said that by selling the houses to the tenants the scheme actually involved privatising the houses which meant that in time there would be fewer units available for people on the list. However, Tom Enright said that the scheme provided tenants with an opportunity to own the house they had been living in for a long period. And

on the question of reducing the number of houses available he said that even if the sale of ten houses on the scheme raised only sufficient funds to purchase half that number on the open market it would still mean that there were five

additional families taken off the housing list. Cllr Wadding did not accept the Chief Executive’s assessment but she was a lone voice of opposition to the scheme which in the past has proven very popular with local

authority tenants. Councillor Pip Breen said it was a wonderful scheme which enabled good tenants to purchase the house they were living in, while it was also welcomed by councillors John Fleming and Willie Fitzharris.

Ferns ‘not forgotten’ in plans for Norman Way All areas of the county will eventually be included in The Norman Way when plans are finalised and finance becomes available, members of the Co. Council were told this week. The cash to enable the stretch from Our Lady’s Island to New Ross get up and running was welcomed by several councillors but there was criticism from some in North Wexford over the fact that Ferns had not been included. Councillor Malcolm Byrne said he was very disappointed by the

exclusion of Ferns. Tourism would be vitally important to help Ferns deal with the challenges it faced in the years ahead when it is bypassed, he told the meeting. But Director of Services Tony Larkin told councillors that there was no question of excluding Ferns and he had been in discussions with the local Development Association on the matter. And Eamonn Hore Services, Director of Services who has charge of New Ross said that as a Norman town New Ross was the obvious place to start.

Bunclody road ‘not on NRA radar’

Brian Plummer, Ferns celebrated his 21st birthday with a paty in the Courtyard Ferns on Saturday night. He is pictured with Brother Liam Plummer, Mam Margaret, and Dad Willie.

Proposed re-surfacing work on the N80 on the outskirts of Bunclody had ‘never been on the NRA’s radar’, local councillor Barbara Ann Murphy was informed at a meeting of the Co. Council this week. Cllr Murphy raised the issue of the work not being undertaken in the current

year and wondered if the delay was connected to the laying of a footpath from the town to the local cemetery. But Director of Services Eamonn Hore said work on the road had never been on the National Roads Authority’s radar, but they would push to have in completed in 2016.

Wexford's Four Day Fast

The four day fast by local clergymen outside St. Iberius Church on Wexford's Main Street has become as much a part of Christmas in Wexford as turkey and ham. Started originally by the late Canon Norman Ruddoc, the former Wexford Parish Administrator Fr. Jim Fegan joined the fast a couple of years later and had been a permanent fixture on the Main Street in the run up to Christmas for two decades. However, Fr. Fegan has departed for Ballindaggin where he has been parish priest since the summer and his place is being taken by the new Wexford parish Administrator Fr Aodhan Marken who will do the fast with Canon Arthur Minion. The four day fast ends on Christmas Eve afternoon. .

Investing in Education and Youth Services Education and youth issues brought Malcolm Byrne into politics, it is the field in which he works and they are issues about which he feels passionately. Investment in education and youth services pays long term dividends for society and for the economy.

Malcolm’s priorities include:

Prospects grim for North Wexford housing It looks like a grim New Year for the nine hundred plus people on the housing list in North Wexford with little prospect of more than a handful of new social houses coming on stream in 2016. Members of the Gorey Municipal District Council decided this week to set aside a portion of the January meeting to examine the strategy being proposed by

the Co. Council to deal with the problem. With no government allocation yet confirmed to the Council officials were unable to give any specific commitments on the number of homes that would get into the system next year, but it could be as few as twenty. Chairman Malcolm Byrne said he was not satisfied that there was a clear strategy.

Cllr John Hegarty said the Council response needed to prioritise the problem in North Wexford. Cllr Fionntan O’Suilleabhain said that even if the €25 allocation promised to the county to cover a three year programme was delivered it would not have a significant impact on the problem in North Wexford.

News Council Diary

Learning the lessons of history, geography and the walk-out protest It’s all about education these days. As the political temperature rises and the days are counted down to polling day one of the big issues emerging is the shortage of second level school places in various parts of the county. But it was education of a different type that dominated the final meeting of Co. Councillors for 2015----English Language Geography and History in particular. The allocation of State cash for the new Norman Way caused both the geography and history problems. Malcolm Byrne was annoyed that Ferns and Enniscorthy were not part of this great new ‘Way’, a project which is an extension of the Great Ireland East and is seen as a key driver of tourism in the county into the future. Wasn’t Ferns the place the Normans landed in Ireland, Malcolm declared? What he

meant, and later clarified, was that they were invited to the country from Ferns, but with that village being landlocked, and no air transport at the time, they couldn’t actually land there. But election candidates are not given any benefit of the doubt these days and Jim Moore was quick to put Malcolm right and inform him that the current part of the project covered all of South Wexford from Our Lady’s Island to New Ross. In Jim’s eyes Malcolm was a bit lost, but perhaps he would find his way when he started canvassing. The meaning of language was the rather unexpected topic which emerged in a debate about the new Tenant Purchase Scheme. While most councillors think it is a great idea to have a scheme which enables Council tenants to

purchase the houses they are living in, Deirdre Wadding does not share that view. She said it was privatisation of the housing stock. Many of her colleagues raised their eyes

Cllr. Malcolm Byrne at this suggestion because they had been campaigning for the reinstatement of the scheme for a long time. And the Chief Executive

rejected any notion that providing ownership of houses to Council tenants was privatisation. Deirdre, however, was having none of it and threw the dictionary at the Council boss to drive home her point. Selling something out of public ownership to private ownership was privatisation, she declar3ed and that was that. A least one member of the Council is interested in further education and has raised the question of financial support for elected members in this area. We don’t know who the elected member in question is, or whether or not they want to pursue studies in English or History, but in any case the Council’s protocol committee has agreed that guidelines be drawn up for such an education scheme. Being Christmas and with the annual Chairman’s Dinner

to attend later in the evening, councillors allowed the meeting to run swiftly along. The Chairman had appealed for co-operation at the start and for the most part he received it. There was a bit of surprise then when he announced at the end that Deirdre Wadding had asked him to suspend Standing Orders to allow her to bring forward an urgent motion. Dempsey said he was not going to suspend Standing Orders but would allow the motion on to the agenda under Any Other Business. What calamity had occurred that required such an unprecedented move at Council level, everyone wondered. All was revealed when Deirdre rose to her feet and mentioned the words ‘Mick Wallace’ ‘fast-tracking to prison’ and then her words

were virtually drowned out as other members protested about the motion being allowed before the meeting in this manner. ‘Oh goodnight Irene’ said councillor Larry O’Brien, but other members were more forceful in their protests and when the Chairman refused to halt the motion two of them, Fergie Kehoe and Keith Doyle walked out in protest. And that’s how it ended for 2015. They’ll do it all again in January but the good news is that there are just two Council meetings scheduled to take place before the election so normal business should resume in March by which time five of the current crop of councillors, Ger Carthy, Malcolm Byrne, James browne, Johnny Mythen and Deirdre Wadding are hoping they will occupy seats in a different chamber after polling day.

Minimum wage hike shock for community groups Many community groups around the county who are availing of community workers through Pobal face a funding crisis because they will be left to foot the bill for the increase in the minimum wage next year. Pobal receives the funding for the workers, a key asset for many community groups, from

the Department of Social Protection. Now they have informed the groups involved that they will not fund the increase in the minimum wage for the workers concerned from January next. This will leave community halls and various other facilities facing a bill of about €4,000 to

make up the difference. The issue was raised by Councillor James Browne at the December meeting of the Co. Council this week. He said budgets were fixed in all these organisations and the decision would result in service cuts. He was supported by Fine Gael’s Jim Moore who said Cllr.

Browne’s motion should be addressed to the Department of Social Protection rather than Pobal because it was the Department that provided the funding for the scheme.; He said it would have big implications for many groups and organisations.

Norman Way to give South Wexford tourism boost There has been a warm welcome for the announcement that Co. Wexford is to receive almost €200,000 in funding under the second phase of Ireland’s Ancient East tourism initiative. The funding is being divided between The Norman Way (€179k), a heritage and leisure route for South Wexford, and the Ros Tapestry (€17k) in New Ross. The Norman Way, a heritage and leisure route which will encourage visitors to spend time exploring Wexford’s authentic cultural experiences and is based on its substantial Norman heritage. The route opens up many hidden gems off the beaten track as well as incorporating the major towns within the region. The project will provide clear directional sign posting and interpretation panels at Norman sites, along the route bringing visitors on a journey from Lady’s Island to New Ross and beyond to encapsulate the wider Norman impact on the region including Waterford and Kilkenny. Visitors will also be able to download a Norman Way smart phone app which will be developed to inform people of the background and significance of the historical sites, as well as local places to eat, where to get refreshments, lists of places to

stay and give the locations of other areas of interest like bird watching, relative to their current location along the route. An additional €17k is being provided to the Ros Tapestry in New Ross. This funding will provide for Audio guides which will allow the visitor to fully immerse themselves in the exhibition at their own pace and experience the rich history of Ireland's Ancient East as told through thread. New Ross is the first town visitors meet after disembarking in Rosslare Europort. Having this cultural experience as one of their first stops in Ireland will greatly enhance their experience of Irelands Ancient East and all it has to offer as we encourage visitors to partake in all the heritage and experiences awaiting them. The Norman Way will link into the Ros Tapestry attraction. The Mayor of the Borough District of Wexford Cllr Ger Carthy said The Norman Way would open the door to tremendous opportunities for South Wexford. In the past visitors to the county were not aware of the many gems which this area had to offer, he said Minister of State, Paul Kehoe said the announcement was great news and he was delighted to welcome this further round of funding.

The €16.5m infrastructure project, which commenced during the Summer, is on track to deliver gas to businesses and homes from the second half of 2016. Work on the new connection is on schedule according to Gas Networks Ireland. The arrival of gas in Wexford will deliver savings of up to 60% for energy users. Picture: Patrick Browne

John and Aoife Byrne, daughter of former TD Hugh, to enjoy the bacon and egg with his guests. The star attraction at the event was Mary O’ Rourke, the grandmother of the Fianna Fail organisation. Charming as ever Mrs O’Rourke had her few words well prepared and focused. Of course this was a Fianna |fail event and it would be important for people to vote the party ticket because that was the way to win seats. However, it was even more important to understand that you voted Number One for Malcolm Byrne. It was almost enough to make the other Byrnes choke on their toast. Mary was taken by the youth and intelligence of the Fianna Fail ticket. This was the future, the shiny new look Fianna Fail that was being put before the Wexford electorate. Even if that’s not exactly what she said it was clearly what sh3e m3eant. And within a few minutes

she had said enough. Instead of standing in front of the attendance making a long speech she would meet and greet the attendance as they finished their breakfasts. And Malcolm was delighted to escort the good lady around the room. He was no doubt even more delighted when she started telling some of the guests that she thought the Gorey councillor would make a good Minister for Education. And there are many who agree with her. However, first Malcolm has to get over the little hurdle of being elected. His Gorey side-kick Joe Sullivan is one of those in charge of steering his campaign in the right direction. Joe is of course an ex-Garda so when he has something to say he does it with great clarity and is straight to the point. An effective election campaign needed two key ingredients-------people and money, he told his audience. The breakfast was a way of

bringing Malcolm’s supporters together for the launch and it also helped raise funds for the campaign itself, so it ticked both of Joe’s boxes. This is Byrne’s first national election campaign and the first time Fianna Fail has put forward a Gorey based candidate since 1987. That candidate, Lorcan Allen, was in the room and received a special mention from Malcolm and also from Mrs O’Rourke who commented on his youthfulness. Fianna Fail has not had a Gorey based TD since Mr Allen lost his seat back in 1982 and North Wexford did not elect any TD to the current Dail. Senator Michael D’Arcy will be battling hard for Fine Gael in the area as he attempts to win back the seat he lost five years ago but fortified with a good breakfast Malcolm’s team are convinced they can win the battle of Gorey 2016. Time will tell.

Carols by Candlelight Bride Street Church Choir hold their annual candlelight Carol Service on Sunday evening next December 20th at 6.30pm. With ten beautiful seasonal carols, and Christmas readings and reflections, this annual event has become very popular, attracting a large number of attendees. Directed by choirmaster Ger Lawlor, and led by Fr Aodhán Marken and guest readers, this service is conducted by the light of over two hundred candles, and gives an oasis of calm and tranquility in the mad days before Christmas. Admission is free, (as it’s a Church Service), and a collection is taken up for the Bride Street Choir music fund. Duration 50 minutes approximately.

Major road plan unveiled for Ballycanew The village of Ballycanew could be in for a major revamp following proposals put before members of the Gorey Municipal District Council this week by engineers. For some months councillors, led by John Hegarty, have been raising concerns about dangers posed to pedestrians in the village due to the complex nature of the junctions on the busy road. Initially it was reported that a major reorganisation of the traffic through the village would be impossible. However, there has been a rethink and the new plan involves diverting the Main Road to the lower part of the village and

M

closing off the existing road around the sharp bend in the centre of the village. The plan would enable a new pedestrian crossing to be constructed at the southern end of the road and the closed off roadway could be cultivated as a green space or public garden. The proposals would dramatically alter the appearance of the village with various upgrade works including the provision of new footpaths also included. Councillors have given their backing to the plans which will now be costed. Then the search will begin for the money to do the work

New crossing near Gorey school

Ballagh criticises government 1916 plans at book launch What connects north Wexford to the 1916 Easter Rising? How and why did people get involved? What was the reaction to events? Last Tuesday, Gorey Library was packed for the launch of a new book, 'Proclaiming the Republic: North Wexford and the 1916 Rising' by local Sinn Féin councillor Fionntán Ó Suilleabhain and John Ó Néill The authors try to answer some of those questions. The book contains firsthand accounts from people across North Wexford, who witnessed the Rising in Co. Wexford and elsewhere in Ireland. The book was launched by renowned artist and activist Robert Ballagh. Re-enactors dressed in the uniforms of the Irish Volunteers, Cumann na mBan and IRA added real colour to the evening. During his passionate speech at the launch, Robert Ballagh was highly critical of the government’s plans to commemorate the centenary of the Easter Rising next year,

Robert Ballagh (centre) along with John O'Neill, Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin and his fellow councillors Johnny Mythen and Oisín O'Connell

particularly aspects like "equating the sacrifices of the British soldiers who died, “… when they did so in the very act of destroying the republic we are supposed to be commemorating.” "They had intended displaying the names Pearse and Connolly along with many others from the opposite side in alphabetical order on a wall. Can you imagine that

happening in London, with those from the Luftwaffe given the same prominence as their own soldiers, or in Arlington Cemetery in the USA. This is national selfabasement - trying to be all things to all people but in the end not being anything to anyone", he told the attendancech Librarian Hazel Percival brought the evening to a

fitting close with a reading of Patrick Pearse’s poem ‘The Wayfarer’, written on the eve of his execution. Printing of the book was supported by Wexford County Council and all proceeds from the book will go to local mental health charity Talk.to.Tom. The book is available around Gorey and further since the weekend.

Wexford County Council is installing a new crossing at St. Michael's Road near the Loreto Primary School in Gorey to make the area safer to cross as well as to slow down traffic. The Chair of Gorey municipal District Counci, lCllr. Malcolm Byrne said:"Residents and parents of children in the school have sought this crossing

for quite some time as the area can be very busy with pedestrians. The new measures will mean that cars will have to reduce speed. It is also important that parents encourage children to cross safely and that they also park responsibly in the area to avoid any possible accidents."

News It’s back to the ocean for two lucky seals in Courtown December is one of Seal Rescue Ireland’s busiest times of the year because of Grey Seal Pupping Season. They have over 20 seal pups in care at the moment and are NOW OPEN to the public every day of the year from 10AM-5PM. This past weekend, Seal Rescue Ireland hosted a public seal release in Courtown Harbour. Two lucky seals who were rescued back in October had been rehabilitated back to health and were now ready to go back into the ocean. A group of locals joined Seal Rescue on the northern beaches to help see the seals off. The seals released were grey seals named Electra and Phoenix. All seals this season are being named after Comic Marvel Characters. Electra was rescued from a beach in Wexford and brought to the centre very thin and with a sevear respiratory infection. Once she started eating fish on her own she quickly started gaining weight and was on the road to recovery. She was only 13kg when she arrived yet she weighed 37kg when released. Phoenix, who was from Waterford, had extensive bite

wounds upon arrival which took a while to heal. After a course of antibiotics and some professional wound treatment she was on her road to recovery. Since arriving at the centre, Phoenix has been a fairly aggressive and tough seal – this attitude has helped her heaps with getting through such a traumatic injury. Seal releases can be a unique, educational, and touching event. They will be hosting another seal release on NEW YEARS DAY at 1PM on the northern beaches of Courtown Harbour. This will also be the day of their SEAL DIP fundraiser where supporters take a swim in the ocean before the release to raise funds to help the seals. Learn more or register at: www.sealrescueireland.org/fun draisers/. Other ways to show your support include Adopting-A-Seal (unique gift idea), purchase a Seal Calendar, donate online, purchase items on their wish list (laundry powder, heat lamp bulbs), or share their facebook with all your family and friends (www.facebook.com/sealrescu

eireland). Seal Rescue Ireland is a not for profit charity ran by volunteers that receives zero reliable funds from the government and depends heavily on community support to keep its doors open so any assistance you can give is greatly appreciated. Seal Rescue Ireland is so glad that these two little ones are getting a second chance at life. They are grateful for the people who came out for the release on the chilly winter day and also for the people involved in both of the seals’ rescues. If you are interested in becoming part of these success stories, the organization is currently look for the following volunteer positions: animal rescue, animal care, admin assistance, tour guides, volunteer coordinator, management positions, maintenance, electrician, and plumber. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering or more about Seal Rescue Ireland please come into the centre or email sealrescueireland @gmail.com

News Honour for Our Lady’s Island Pilgrimage The annual pilgrimage to Our Lady’s Island has been a highlight of the Religious Calendar in Co. Wexford for a very long time with people from all over the country visiting the South Wexford Shrine on August 15th and throughout the pilgrimage season which continues until early September. Traditionally thousands of people have gathered for the walk around the Island while reciting prayers to mark the

start of the pilgrimage and throughout the season various groups and parishes organise their own visits to this special placed of worship. I n recent years there have been considerable improvements and developments at Our Lady’s Island and all those associated with the continued success of the pilgrimage were honoured by one of their own at a Civic Reception. Mayor Ger Carthy

welcomed a large attendance to the Heritage Park for a reception to honour all those who have contributed to the pilgrimage over the years. Among those present were various voluntary workers who contribute so much to the pilgrimage each season. They were headed by the local Parish Priest Fr. Brendan Nolan and were joined on the night by the Bishop of Ferns Dr. Denis Brennan.

Maureen Smith,Mayor Carthy, Anne Carthy, Mary Hughes, Fr,Brendan Nolan, Joan Carroll and Peg Ellard.

Mayor Carthy recalled the history of the pilgrimage and paid a warm tribute to all those who had worked so hard over the years to ensure that Our Lady’s Island remained a place of pilgrimage. There were grateful thanks from those in attendance that the significance of Our Lady’s Island had been recognised by the Mayor and the Wexford Borough District Council.

GER WALSH It really is time to take a sledgehammer to the Health Service The health service never fails to come up with new shocking examples of the sheer inadequacies of what the HSE offers the public. For a long time now we have been hearing complaints about cutbacks,

shortages of staff, shortages of beds and the like as waiting lists grow, conditions get worse and the HIQA inspections reveal more information about the shocking reality of life behind the doors of our acute hospitals and nursing

homes. There was a time when people would always add a rider to any complaint about the health service by saving that once you got into the system the treatment was very good.

In more recent times, and I am talking about the last couple of years, you don’t tend to hear that statement as much. Instead you hear horror stories about errors, poor treatment of patients, an arrogant attitude to relatives and a generally very unsatisfactory environment inside the system for patients and their families. And it seems that no matter how much money is put into the system it makes very little difference. When new facilities are built people expect an improvement in services, but the reality for many is that the additional space appears only to provide more room for greater chaos. It is difficult to know what can be done but putting in additional money to the current set up would not appear wise. There seems to be a fundamental management and organisational problem within the HSE and in the health system at all levels which will not be solved by money. The recent news that target times for people waiting for tests for bowel cancer have gone out the window with thousands waiting more than three months for a colonoscopy and some even waiting more than a year was indeed shocking. This is an area which I know a little bit about and am only too

well aware from personal experience of the importance of early detection. Failure to provide early tests and early detection can lead to deaths but at best a prolonged period of treatment and a much reduced quality of life. Yet the HSE put forward a spokesperson who could really offer no explanation as to why the targets were not being met. And let us not forget that the three months target itself is far too long. Ideally anyone referred for a colonoscopy should be seen in fourteen to twenty one days. In terms of cancer detection and treatment this procedure is one of the most basic and straightforward there is and can be carried out in virtually any HSE hospital. Is it believable that all HSE facilities are so busy seven days per week that the backlog for this procedure could not be cleared with a small bit of imagination and reorganisation? In the unlikely event that there is no space, time or capacity in the public system would it not be possible for the HSE to purchase the procedures from private hospitals? In the context of the overall heath budget the cost would be small change and could actually be cheaper than having them carried out within the HSE system itself. If people cannot have a basic

test to determine whether or not they are suffering from cancer then we do not really have a health system at all. We are rapidly going down the road of rural Garda Stations where we have a type of ‘pretend’ system with buildings and HSE signs but in reality very little that is of any use. Certainly having a hospital building provides fat salaries for the top people who run it but if it cannot deliver to the people it is suppose to serve then it would be better if it didn’t exist all. I am not suggesting for one minute that any hospital should be closed down but people are dying all over the country because the current system is unable to deliver the most basic of tests. Tackling the mess that is the health service may require some more money but more importantly it requires a ruthless root and branch overhaul where every road- block on the path to radical change is simply crushed. If that means major reorganisation or hospitals and the services they provide as well as smashing up vested interests at all levels then so be it. Otherwise people will continue to suffer and die as we persist with a system which in its current form is clearly not fixable.

Why many people oppose minimum pricing for alcohol I was interested to see that 75% of listeners who participated in the text poll on the Joe Duffy Show were opposed to the government’s minimum pricing legislation on alcohol. Given the makeup of listeners to that programme and their age profile I think it would be fair to say that the number against the proposal might be even greater in a representative sample of the wider community. With the known damage which cheap alcohol has

been causing in Ireland it is surprising that so many people are opposed to a measure to tackle the problem. Of course it could be that people don’t really believe this is a genuine initiative by the government to deal with the issue and instead view it as another stealth tax. That is unfortunate and probably stems from the fact that many people no longer see any good in anything which politicians propose. I can see where some of the

opposition is coming from. There are many people on limited incomes who are no longer in a position to pay the price which a drink in the local pub costs nowadays and instead get their sole comfort from sitting at home supping a beer purchased for a fraction of the cost in an off licence. These people believe that they have been under attack from the State for more than a decade. They see all sorts of things from the smoking ban, stricter drink driving

laws to pension cuts and water charges as an all out war waged on them by the State. These people are not of course the real target of this new legislation. It is aimed at curbing the excesses of the gangs of young men and women who load up with cheap booze on the way to house parties every weekend. Unfortunately once again it will be those in the hidden Ireland who will be the victims of yet another government decision.

Vast majority of councillors are honest and hardworking I have to agree with those who commented that the RTE Special Investigations Unit report on the activities of councillors in the border counties was a bit like watching an episode of Killnascuddy. Indeed someone suggested to me that RTE might enter the programme for an award at some international festivals and it would certainly qualify for inclusion in the comedy

category. Of course there was a serious point to the programme and it did expose a type of individual that most of us thought had been banished to history, It really is hard to believe that in this day and age any public representative would be either so naive or outrageous as to demand money from a business promoter at a relatively early

meeting to discuss the project. But that’s what they did and of course it was disgraceful. However, I thought the national broadcaster ran away with the story a bit devoting hours of radio and television programming to the revelations. This must be viewed in context. There are almost one thousand councillors in the country and RTE managed to

find three who were guilty of abusing their positions for personal gain. The Station did the people some service by rooting out these individuals but in the aftermath the blanket coverage certainly gave the impression that this type of thing was widespread. There really is no evidence that suggest that it is, although it would be a help if councillors filled in their declaration of interest forms.

Chronicle December 17, 2015 A young mother wants to ban ‘The Muppets’ Maybe I am just getting out of touch or something but increasingly I come across news items which to me at any rate defy logic. The latest involved a case where a mother has begun a campaign for a school to ban a ‘graphic’ Muppets book. The Muppet Show was a favourite in many households every Sunday evening several decades ago and while you could complain about many aspects of the programme being ‘graphic’ would certainly not have been on the radar. The latest Muppet Book ‘For Every Child, A Better World’ was produced in cooperation with the United Nations. According to Amazon Kermit ‘guides the younger child through many of the issues that affect children in today’s society’ Teachers at a school in Wisconsin thought it would be a great idea to read the book aloud to the children. But one mother, Mary Carney, was not one bit happy. Her son has just

started at the school and she was reportedly unhappy that the book contained images of children living in poverty and violence. One illustration, for instance, depicts a child living in a box in the rain. Carney cited some Online reviews as evidence that some people were traumatized after reading the book. ‘I just have concerns that it’s too graphic, even though these are Muppets characters’ she said. ‘Unfortunately in this world there is a lot of war and strife and poverty, I understand that. I just don’t know how appropriate it is to be teaching that to five year olds’ Aaaaah Mrs Carney. I don’t think there is anything more I can say except that it is probably just as well I didn’t buy any Muppet books as presents for children this year. Anyway I have lot of things to do in the run up to Christmas so I’ll leave it there for this issue. Happy Christmas.

Launch of Tony Doran DVD The skills on the hurling field of a man who dominated as a player with his performances as full forward thrilling hurling fans not just in this county but all over

Ireland, have been brought to life again with the launch of a DVD chronicling the career of Tony Doran. The GAA Centre in Monamolin was the fitting venue for the launch of the

film which includes some rarely seen footage of the great man in action. Covering a career all the way from the Rackard League to his place in the Hall of

Fame this is a must have for GAA fans. People travelled from many parts of the country for the launch which was performed by the great Babs Keating from Tipperary.

Councillors debate Prime Time’ The fallout from the RTE Prime Time programme which exposed wrong doing among a small number of Co. Councillors found its way into the Wexford Council Chamber this week when members supported a lengthy motion from Councillor Malcolm Byrne Proposing his motion Councillor Byrne said that the vast majority of councillors in Ireland were hardworking and committed to their communities and did not abuse public office. Councillor Paddy Kavanagh who is the Wexford representative on the Local Authority Members’ Association revealed that the three councillors involved had been removed from the association, two had gone voluntary and one had not, he said. One of those involved had been a former Chair of the Association and was still on the executive but there was no way he could be allowed to continue to represent councillors, Cllr Kavanagh told his colleagues. Councillor Kavanagh agreed with councillor Byrne that the vast majority of councillors across the country were honest and hardworking. Commenting

on the programme he said one hundred councillors had been selected by the programme makers and it was a pity that those who had not behaved improperly were not identified to give a proper sense of the conduct of councillors generally. The Fine Gael councillor said he was in no way defending the actions of the trio on the programme but it was three out of nine hundred and fifty councillors in the country. On the question of the failure of so many councillors to fill up their declaration forms he said the omissions were very minor in some instances and in some cases it involved councillors not being aware that they had to declare their family home on the form. He suggested that an advisor be brought in to provide details to members in relation to the form in advance of the 2016 declaration date a suggestion which was taken up by the Chairman Tony Dempsey who told members who felt they didn’t need any such advice that they could cover their ears during the session. Cllr Deirdre Wadding said the revelations on the programme were disgraceful.
