Byrne makes move, Carthy ponders run The countdown to the general election in Wexford is now officially underway with the field for the poll, which must be held before next April at the latest, likely to become much clearer by the middle of September. There is still uncertainty about exactly what names will be on the ballot paper but the departure of Liam Twomey, which had been widely anticipated, opens the way for at least one new Wexford TD in the next Dail. However, few would bet against as many as three new faces from county Wexford sitting as TDs after the poll with the shift in support from the three traditional parties expected to pose problems for some of the outgoing deputies. Gorey councillor Malcolm

Byrne was first out of the traps with a declaration that he is to seek a Fianna Fail nomination. His formal announcement will give him a head start over others who have yet to officially announce their position Within days of Byrne's declaration Fianna Fail HQ moved to make arrangements for the Wexford convention which could now be held as early as the end of August. Party members have been invited to put forward nominations by this weekend.. Fianna Fail's position has been complicated by the failure of outgoing TD John Browne to give party HQ a straight answer in relation to his intentions although it has been assumed for months that the Enniscorthy TD who celebrates

his 67th birthday this weekend and who has dealt with serious illness in recent years, will not stand again. There is still uncertainty about how the Fianna Fail convention will be organised or how many candidates will be selected but the field, in the absence of John Malcolm Byrne first to Michael D’Arcy hop- Paul Kehoe FG front Browne, will ing for Dail return runner likely come from declare for FF Malcolm Byrne, Municipal District in last year's spread. Sunshine and style on Ladies Day The final weekend of July is a bit of a quite one in Irish racing as everyone involved in the sport prepares for the extravaganza that is the Galway racing festival. It is therefore a difficult weekend on which to stage a successful race meeting, but the executive at Wexford Racecourse have for some years now stepped up to the challenge and achieved a fair degree of success. The two day fixture last Friday evening and Saturday afternoon saw good attendances at Bettyville Park with the weather on Saturday good enough to encourage plenty of ladies to enter the best dressed event sponsored by Monart Destination Spa. There is nothing like a 'Ladies Day' event to add colour and atmosphere to a racing fixture and there was

plenty of colour at Wexford on Saturday afternoon. There is also nothing like a 'Best Dressed Lady' event to draw out the young males as well and they were in attendance in abundance on Saturday with plenty of smartly groomed men more interested in eyeing up the talent in the enclosure than studying the horses as they paraded before races. Those who did pay attention Ruth Davis, Sheila McCarthy, Liz Maher, Winner Best Dressed to the horses had Lady, Mark Browne, Monart Spa Sponsors, Juanita Spain, a rather profitable Louise Kehoe, and Melissa Dooley afternoon. (Continued from front page) However, despite these obstacles there is strong support for his candidature in several areas and he may bow to pressure to present himself as an alternative to the traditional party candidates and those from the hard left. Fine Gael will hold a convention in early September and may opt to run just two candidates. Sources suggest that they will certainly not run a third male but could add a female to the ticket to deal with gender quota issues. A number of females with business connections have been mentioned as possibilities but they may be

put off by the fact that inside the party at least they would be seen as little more than token candidates. A two candidate strategy might offer Fine Gael the best hope of retaining two seats with Michael D'Arcy returning to the Dail after five years in the Seanad to join Paul Kehoe.. Labour Party sources insist that Brendan Howlin will face the electorate despite continuing speculation that he may opt to take a post in Europe as soon as this year's budget is announced. Despite a successful term as Minister for Public Expenditure and a huge programme of infrastructural developments delivered to the

constituency there are indications that the Minister would face a very tough campaign with many traditional Labour supports in an unforgiving mood. National analysis of opinion poll data suggests he would have difficulty holding his seat but these accessments do not fully take account of local factors. When the field for the election becomes clear in September it will be possible to provide a clearer forecast as to the likely destination of the seats. However, on current polling data it would be difficult to see the outgoing government holding more than two seats

Residents and Irish Water to meet on lead pipes Irish Water officials are to be brought face to face with residents of a housing estate where the issue of lead pipes is seen as a test case for people living in old urban estates across the country. Irish Water informed residents of Bishopswater in Wexford town earlier this year that the water supply to their homes was carried

in lead pipes which needed to be replaced. The State water company has said it will replaced the piping as far as the gardens of the houses but it is up to the residents themselves to replace the pipes which are on private property. Now members of the Wexford Borough District Council have agreed to meet the residents on

deputation to discuss the issue and they are bringing Irish Water officials to the same meeting so that both sides can interact on the issue. Mayor Ger Carthy told a meeting of the Council that he was happy to facilitate a deputation and said it would take place prior to the next scheduled monthly meeting in September.

Concern over roadside strawberry selling Wexford Co. Council is to review its policy on roadside strawberry sellers following growing fears that a serious accident may be caused by traffic stopping at some of the roadside cabins which are parked in dangerous locations. Concerns were raised about safety issues at a meeting of the Wexford Borough District Council by Cllr. Frank Staples who said he was concerned that

some of the sellers were located in dangerous places and people stopping to make a purchase or vehicles leaving could cause accidents. Some also posed a danger to the people working in the cabins, he said. Director of Services Tony Larkin said it was a matter which had come to the Council's attention. originally the policy was introduced to allow farmers sell their produce directly to

the public but it now appeared that agents had taken over the selling in several locations and there were safety concerns about some of the areas in which they operated. There was no desire or plan to ban the roadside sale of strawberries and produce but the safety concerns would be examined, he told councillors.

Public concern over cost of Gorey lights Gorey councillors were slammed last year when faults to the old Christmas lighting system in the town meant there was no lighting in place for the start of the Christmas shopping season. They have spend months examining proposals for a new lighting system for Christmas 2015 and agreed plans for

elaborate lights for the town at their June meeting. Now they are coming under fire again with the €100,000 price tag on the lights infuriating the public, particularly rural dwellers who have been making their views known to councillors. However, at their July meeting councillors defended

the decision to spend the money on the lights and insisted that the public had missed the full picture. The total cost included the purchase of the lights a new sound system and various once off costs for year one and there would be a contribution from local businesses, councillors John Hegarty and Mary Farrell

insisted. Now the state of the old lights which are no longer suitable for the entire town are to be examined and those still in good working order will be offered to rural locations that are in need of new or additional lighting for Christmas.

Parking app launched in Gorey A new accessible parking app is about to go into operation in Gorey. The app will enable people to identify the exact location of the town’s twenty two disabled parking bays and provides information not just on exactly where they are but also gives details of the type of fees that apply to them. The app was demonstrated to members of the local Municipal District Council at their July meeting and was warmly welcomed by councillors. Cllr. Mary Farrell said the app should also be rolled out

to the seaside resorts because a lot of people made enquiries about the situation with accessible parking before travelling to the county. She also raised the question of the abuse of designated parking bays and said that on that very day two cars that did not have disabled parking badges displayed were parked in the bays in the grounds of the Gorey Civic Centre. Cllr Joe Sullivan said he observed that problem regularly in the bays located near his place of business.

Knotweed blamed for road delay

Gorey Town Park ‘safe’

The presence of Japanese knotweed along the route of Gorey's inner relief road is being blamed for the fact that there has been a long delay in undertaking the work on this important piece of infrastructure. The 'knot weed excuse has infuriated councillor Malcolm Byrne who said there had been a promise that the road would be open by September for the start

Gorey's Town Park is a safe place for children to play despite recent publicity about drug dealing in the area. And the man who highlighted those concerns has revealed that he allows his own child to play in the park. The safety question was raised by Cllr Robbie Ireton on foot of recent publicity about drug dealing. Town Manager Amanda Byrne said she believed the park was

of the new school year. And he told a meeting of the local Municipal District Council that there was a problem with Japanese knotweed all over the county and he would not accept it as an an acceptable excuse for the delay. However, he was informed that the contractor delayed the work because of the weed issue.

But there was also a problem with ownership on the route, Director of Services Annette O'Neill

informed the meeting. She said this had also contributed to the delay.

very safe. Cllr Fionntain O Suilleabhan who highlighted the drug dealing recently said the matter had been brought to his attention and as a public representative he had a duty to respond to it. However, he said he never suggested the park was not safe and revealed that his own child played there and that would not be happening if he believed it was unsafe.

‘Nothing worth robbing in New Ross’ As Gorey makes a concerted effort to get increased representation on the countywide Joint Policing Committee there has been strong criticism of the over representation of other areas on the committee. ‘Put benches for homeless in new park’--Wadding A furious row erupted at a meeting of the Wexford Borough District Council over criticism of proposals to develop a second public park in the town with People Before Profit Council Deirdre Wadding attacking the plans at a time when she said the Council could not provide children's playgrounds or provide houses to help people keep a roof over the heads.

And when she suggested that if they were going ahead with a park at Carcur in addition to a major Park recently announced for Kileens they should put plenty of benches in to facilitate homeless sleepers she was denounced by Cllr. George Lawlor. The move to develop the Park at Carcur came from Fianna Fail councillor Fergie

Kehoe but Fine Gael's Jim Moore said no proposals had come before him for either Carcur or the planned development at Kileens. Cllr Lawlor said the Council's Chief Executive had said that the Kileens development would be funded from future development fees and would therefore not affect housing provision.

GER WALSH

Wallace ‘like exotic belly dancer’ Wexford Independent TD, Mick Wallace, managed to massively improve his profile, and re-election chances with his startling claims about NAMA made in the last few weeks. His timing was perfect and for a man rarely seen in the county and who proudly boasts that he kept his word about not dealing with constituency matters, it was a master stroke coming just as things are about to slip into gear for the general election campaign. Mr Wallace made his claims under Dail privilege which means he can effectively say

what he wants regardless of whether or not the allegations he make are actually true. This is something which has not hugely impressed the respected legal affairs commentator with the Irish Independent Dearbhail McDonald who pointed out that after making his claims about NAMA's activities in the north the TD refused to appear the public Accounts Committee to elaborate on his claims. And she suggests that buoyed by his success on the Northern Ireland issue, 'Mr Wallace has, like some form of

exotic belly dancer, taunted us with promises of further reveals beneath his tantalising veil' But can Mr Wallace have his cake and eat it,?, she asks The mind boggles at the thought of 'Pink Mick' performing some sort of belly dancing routine. However, it is easier to understand her concerns about Mr Wallace's claims that an unnamed Nama official sought and received a €15,000 bribe This she says is a staggering claim and one which if true warrants full criminal inquiry. And she adds 'This is not

just wishful thinking. Since 2011 it is an offence for a 'person' not to report to Gardai any information they know or believe might be of material assistance in preventing a crime or securing the apprehension, prosecution or conviction of 'a relevant offence' Section 19 of the Criminal Justice Act was introduced to crack down on white collar crime.. Given the constitutional protection afforded to Dail privilege is Mr Wallace captured by the 2011 Act?, she asks. 'Even if he is not he should consider reporting his concerns. Otherwise, what is the point in shouting 'fire'?', she concludes. What she seemed to be saying is that if Mr Wallace had a genuine concern about

‘I’m Tony and my specialist subject is Rackard’ When discussing any subject it is always handy to have an expert on hand and when it comes to hurling and statistics there is little that Fianna Fail councillor Tony Dempsey does not know. He blinded his colleagues at a meeting of the Wexford Borough District Council last week with information on Nicky Rackard. The occasion was a discussion on how to protect the great hurler's statue from vandals. Tony almost went into orbit detailing the on field exploits of the great man. Did you know that Nicky holds the record for the

highest score ever achieved in the championship and that was at a time when there were fewer games (no back door then and when the games were just sixty minutes as opposed to seventy in the modern game. Yes he scored more than any of those modern day pretenders, including Henry Shefflin. And by the way second spot in that table goes to another Wexford man-----Tony Doran. getting to the bottom of this he should give all the information to the Gardai. Well the Wexford TD has obviously taken her advice because last week he met senior detectives and provided them with what information he had. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here. What an answer My prize for the answer of the week, month or maybe even the year goes to John Carley the Co. Council Director who has charge of the Enniscorthy Municipal District. He was responding to a question from Councillor Barbara Ann Murphy who was concerned about thefts from cars parked outside the cemetery in Enniscorthy .

Her concern did not relate directly to the actual theft but the fact that there were no signs in the car park warning about the possibility of thefts from unattended vehicles in the area. She asked if the signs could be put in place to help tackle the problem. The matter would be examined, said Mr Carley, following an examination

Chronicle July 29, 2015

Labour voting system is a bit mad of the effectiveness of similar signs in other locations.. I think you could translate that into' Do you really think a few signs in the car park are going to stop the thieves' Nevertheless it will be interesting to see whether or not the signs have had any effect in other areas.

The Labour Party in the UK really have a bizarre way of electing their leader, which probably explains why they did so badly in the recently general election. Anyone who pays ÂŁ2 is entitled to become a member of the party for the purpose of the leadership election. Now their are reports of Tory activities paying the money and joining up just so that they can vote for the

candidate that would make the party virtually unelectable in any future national contest. This has given rise to the term 'Tories for Corbyn'. Jeremy Corbyn is the candidate from the extreme left of the party who few thought would figure at all in the contest but is now doing surprisingly well. He has the support of these Tories, it seems. I was just thinking of the

fun you would have here if the situation was replicated. Supporters of Michael D'Arcy could join Fianna Fail and vote for James Browne or Michael Sheehan at convention to keep Malcolm Byrne of the general election ticket. They would probably be called 'Fine Gaelers for Browne and Sheehan''. Somehow I don't think it would work here.

Tusla Agency revelations Grease is the word for Paddy The revelations over the weekend that Tusla the children's Agency has a chronic shortage of resources and is unable to meet the demands of many vulnerable children is very disturbing. People in this county are probably more aware than anyone of the importance of child protection and child protections services and the need for the State Agencies to be able to respond to cries for help. This agency needs additional resources and

they need them now. Otherwise at some point in the future there will be a commission of enquiry reporting on the shocking tragedies that resulted from this neglect. However, the difficulty for any government in trying to adequately resource this type of an agency is that it is often difficult to measure how effectively resources are being used. I am not for a minute suggesting that Tusla is not properly using its resources and it seems

Wexford Credit Union, Anne Street, Wexford Telephone 053 - 9123909 email@ loans@wexfordcreditunion.ie

there is no question but that it is currently underresourced. However, a way of measuring the effective use of all resources in these type of state agencies is very important if money is not to be wasted. Otherwise, as we have seen so often in the health service, we will simply have money poured into them as the economy recovers but no guarantee of any better outcomes.

and the Bull The movie Grease is to be shown on a giant open air cinema screen in Enniscorthy on Saturday August Ist, that's the Saturday which kick starts the holiday season. Given fine weather the free outdoor screening should be a great success and lead to a great atmosphere in the town.. The film of course features many fine dance routines and I assume that

as Chairman of the local Council Paddy Kavanagh will take a full part in the fun at Market Square. He could even bring along that prize winning bull that he is so found of cuddling up to and perform a bit of a routine of his own.. I am sure Paddy and the Bull would put John Travolta and Oliva Newton John in the ha'penny place.

New homes to benefit elderly and disabled The provision of 35 new homes in Wexford for elderly people and those with intellectual or physical disability will greatly benefit these individuals and their families according to Fine Gael Minister, Paul Kehoe. Minister Kehoe was speaking following the announcement by Minister for the Environment, Community & Local Government, Alan Kelly, and Minister for State for Housing, Planning & Construction, Paudie Coffey, of a major nationwide

programme to provide housing to vulnerable individuals. “This is fantastic news. It will directly benefit these individuals and their families and will greatly help to reduce the pressure on Wexford. Furthermore it will provide us with a legacy of improved housing stock for those who are unable to provide for themselves. It is extremely welcome that we will have these new dedicated social housing units to provide these supports to those who find

themselves in need of housing support. “This announcement comes on the back of the announcement by the Government in May of increased funding for local authorities to undertake adaptations to houses to support people with a disability and the elderly. “The investment, which comes to over €151 million nationally and €4,676,500 in Wexford, will be given to Approved Housing Bodies, to assist those with specific

needs such as elderly people, persons with intellectual or physical disability and homeless persons. The newly acquired homes will be ready for people with housing needs this year while the newly constructed homes will be completed by 2017. “The construction and upgrading of these housing units will also help create local employment, the benefits of which will be felt by businesses in our community.”

At last…….a home for Bunclody Bottle Bank The search is over in Bunclody and while they have not struck gold it must feel like that for some of the local residents. What they were searching for was a location for a Bottle Bank in the town, but that search proved extremely difficult and went on for more than a year.

Month after month local councillor, Barbara Anne Murphy raised the issue a meetings of the local Municipal District Council but each time the story was the same------no luck. On occasions a location was identified and progress made only for the deal to fall through in the end. The problem was the fear of

residents that locating a Bottle Bank in their area would attract illegal dumping and that proved too high a hurdle to overcome on every occasion. But last week Barbara Anne was able to tell her council colleagues that it was a case of success at last

Bunclody AFC grounds is the new home of Bunclody Bottle Bank, Barbara Anne proudly announced, her long search at an end. The new location is covered by CCTV and the hope is that this will deter illegal dumpers. .

Making babies, evil landlords and a room full of clowns, welcome to ‘Robbie’s World’ Unprotected sex is a big problem for councillors in Gorey. You see it;s putting terrible pressure on the

housing stock, what with the resultant babies queuing up with their young parents looking for houses.

Whether this unprotected sex problem is as widespread in other parts of the county is unclear, but it does not seem to be as big an issue outside Gorey. However, in North Wexford it is a problem and has been raised at quite a few meetings of the local Municipal District Council. Perplexed as to why so many young people should be having unprotected sex and becoming young portents at a time when contraceptives are more widely available than ever is councillor Robbie Ireton. Truth be told he is on a bit of a one man mission with regard to this issue. In Robbie's eyes these young people are going out, enjoying themselves and then presenting to the Council looking for houses for themselves and their offspring. This is causing terrible problems for the Council. But it gets worse. Some of these people are actually having unprotected sex with more than one partner, according to Robbie, so one young male could actually

be looking for two Council houses to facilitate his offspring. Robbie is pleading for something to be done about it and now he has spotted a window of opportunity. There is a big push on in North Wexford to get young people more involved in local government by helping them understand what it is the councillors and officials actually do. Transition Year students are to be targeted for involvement in the initiative which is being spearheaded by the Chairman Malcolm Byrne. All members are agreed that it is a great idea. These students could even attend meetings and witness the important debates and contribution which take place, it was suggested.at the July meeting of the Council. Yes said Robbie, but what about these young people having unprotected sex, producing babies, some of them several babies and as a result putting awful pressure on the Council to house them. This was the opportunity to bring the message about protection and control to the youth of North Wexford, he suggested. Chairman Byrne, and others looked as if they might be in need of assistance from a paramedic as laughter brought some councillors to a state of near collapse. When he regained some composure the Chairman managed to suggest that he didn't believe the biggest issue facing young people when confronted with an unexpected pregnancy was the impact their plight would have on the Council's housing stock. But Robbie insisted it was an issue that needed tackling. Later when the meeting ended he provided a little more insight into this unprotected sex problem in North Wexford and it appears that councillors may have played a part in it. Not current councillors, let us hasten to add. But, according to Robbie, in the past some councillors (none are currently active and some may even have since died) encouraged people to have regular unprotected relations with their partners with the aim of having as many children as

possible to help them jump up the housing waiting list. With such a shortage of houses in North Wexford at the moment it doesn't really matter how many children you have they are unlikely to open the door to a new Council house, but it seems in Gorey they tend to stick to old habits. And with such a shortage of public housing many are forced to look to private landlords for accommodation. Robbie doesn't like private landlords, or indeed their agents. He constantly tells

chamber. Well that's Robbie's view and at the end of another fun filled Gorey Municipal District meeting after which everyone adjourned for tea and cake to mark Robbie's 60th. birthday few were in any mood to disagree. Robbie says he is thinking of writing a book and it could certainly form the basis of a very fine film. or maybe even someone could write a soap opera based on Robbie's life and times. 'Robbie's World' would do wonders for tourism in North Wexford.

meetings that he thought we as a nation had seen the end of landlords when we drove the British out of the country. But now they are back and they are worse than ever. Despite bring in charge of more dwelling units than almost anyone else in North Wexford Robbie does not class himself as a landlord. He is the owner of a very substantial holiday caravan/mobile home park in Courtown but that is not like being a landlord. He takes money from the people who have the homes on his land alright but he does it in more of a social service sort of way. At least that what he says, but few of his colleagues seem to believe him. The circus is coming to Gorey next week and as part of its caring initiative they have allocated tickets to the council for distribution to deserving families and also given a handful to the Chairman for his personal use. But why would Malcolm waste his time going to the circus when he is surrounded by clowns in the Council

There would be a part for all the councillors. Robbie himself would obviously be in the title role with Joe Sullivan as the evil landlord and Pip Breen as the tenant farmer, Anthony Donohoe would be the local priest, run off his feet officiating at baptisms of babies where the parents are little more than babies themselves, with Malcolm Byrne as the wayward kid hosting late night parties on the beach and Fionntain O'Sullibhain as the head of the local Neighbour Watch taking photographs of the parties and sending them to the local reporter played by John Hegarty, while Town Manager Amanda Byrne and Director of Serviced Annette O'Neill would both have Trading Stalls on Courtown's seafront.. But, of course ‘Robbie's World' would not be complete without a Family Planning Clinic, and it would have to be a large one to cater for the expected demand. It would be staffed by Robbie himself and Mary Farrell to bring a bit of gender balance to the operation. Happy Birthday Robbie.

Your SUMMER in Wexford Rebels and Redcoats to take to Vinegar Hill for massive battle re-enactment

The fourth annual reenactment of the Battle of Vinegar Hill is set to take place at the historic Enniscorthy location this Saturday and Sunday, August 1st and 2nd and organiser’s say over 500 Rebels and Redcoats are set to take to the battlefield. The largest annual battle reenactment in Ireland will offer spectators the opportunity to see pike charging Rebels and musket wielding Redcoats recreate the most significant battles in Ireland’s history, the 1798 Rebellion. Manager of Enniscorthy Castle and the 1798 Centre Rory O’Connor says that calls of ‘MAKE READY, PRESENT, FIRE’ will be heard throughout the weekend. “Our Battle re-enactors have been practicing their drills on Vinegar Hill for the last number of months, we even had a battalion travel to Waterloo earlier this summer to participate in what was the bicentenary Waterloo Battle Re-enactment so we are well prepared to showcase the sights, sounds and smells of the 1798 Battle with pike charges, musket volleys, cavalry assaults and cannon bombardments, it will be two days filled with action offering all spectators the opportunity to live, breathe and witness a re-creation of history.” The highlight of each day

will be the staging of two fullscale battle re-enactments on view freely to the public, with the Rebels capturing Enniscorthy Town on Saturday, August 1st while the Redcoats take Vinegar Hill on Sunday, August 2nd. Visitors are invited to watch the two armies fight amidst gunfire and explosions, pike charges and cannon fire on the notorious battleground overlooking Enniscorthy. ‘Unit 21’ the young Rebel Camp is currently open for registrations, the children’s rank will be in the middle of the action and the last line of defence when the redcoats attempt to 'take the camp' on the Hill on Sunday, August 2nd. Joining the forces promises the young rebels a fun day out immersed in living history. If you think you have what it takes children can enlist to join the rebel forces at www.vinegarhill.ie

Other Rebellious events taking place over the weekend include a special wreath laying ceremony, commemorating all those who died in the 1798 Rebellion which will be held at Market Square following the Battle Re-enactment of Enniscorthy Town on August the 1st. Each year the Battle of Vinegar Hill Re-enactment attracts thousands of spectators to Enniscorthy as the town explodes into rebellion and this year the event has joined forces with the Enniscorthy Rock n Roll Town Festival and the Enniscorthy Food Festival so all three events now take place during the August Bank holiday weekend offering locals and visitors four days of unique experiences, great local food produce and entertainment at venues across the historic town from July 31st to August 3rd.

The Enniscorthy Food Festival The Enniscorthy Food Festival is set to host over 50 exhibitors, showcasing an array of local produce and crafts from Wexford and beyond. Talented chefs from

across the South East will cook up a storm combining classic and imaginative cooking with local and seasonal ingredients creating unique dishes with a depth of flavour. Visitors can

wash all this delicious food down with tasty, locally produced craft beer and cider at the beer marquee.

Enniscorthy Rock 'n' Roll Town Festival Now in its 6th year, Enniscorthy Rock 'n' Roll Town Festival is based on 1950’s Rock ‘n’ Roll, Rockabilly and Rhythm ‘n’ Blues music and attracts visitors to town from all over Ireland and across Europe. This year’s events will showcase numerous renowned national and international

artists preforming in various pubs around the town throughout the weekend. Family concerts will be performed on outdoor stages in Market Square (August 1st) and Abbey Square (August 2nd) and members of the public are invited to an outdoor staging of “Grease” in Market Square on August 1st.

This year’s Rock N Roll Festival will also see the return of the vintage car show will be hosted by the "Wexford Sports and Classic Car Club” and will also feature the 2nd annual All Ireland Competition for the best 1950’s Classic Car in Abbey Square Car Park on Saturday 2nd August.

Your SUMMER in Wexford Martin Codd Festival in Rathnure this weekend Rathnure is the place to be this August bank Holiday weekend as the Martin Codd Weekend takes place. Events over the weekend will appeal to all ages with activities on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The name Martin Codd is well known across the country where GAA games and music are enjoyed. To some people, Martin was known as a hurler, dedicated to his local Rathnure St. Anne’s GAA club and the development of the skills and thinking of the game. To others, he is best remembered as a singer who breathed life into the songs he sang. Martin was centre-forward on the great 1956 All-Ireland winning Wexford team alongside the Rackard brothers, Tim Flood, Jim English, Padge Kehoe, Ned Wheeler and Jim Morrissey. In his own words Martin told the story of that great Wexford team in his book "The Way I Saw It: Nickey Rackard leads Wexford to Hurling Glory" which was published in 2006. Retiring from hurling, Martin turned to singing and music, enjoying chart-topping success with The Herdsmen, with whom

he played all the leading venues in Ireland and Britain. From his later years, the annual gatherings to hear him singing at the Fleadh Cheoil are fondly remembered. The Martin Codd Weekend festival offers events for everyone, young and old, over the August Bank Holiday Weekend. Celebrating music, sport and culture, proceeds from all events go to Rathnure GAA Club. Saturday 1st August: The Martin Codd Weekend kicks off at 10am with an Under 10s hurling blitz in Rathnure with teams coming from counties Wexford, Carlow and Kilkenny. Admission free Saturday Night 1st August and the venue is Rathnure Hall at 8.15pm for a very special Variety Concert featuring musicians, singers, sketches and comedy. Gathering together artists who shared the stage with Martin over the years, the night promises to be highly entertaining. Your SUMMER in Wexford 1940s theme for 75th Castlebridge Show All roads lead to Castlebridge Hall on Sunday 9th August 2015 for the 75th Castlebridge Horticultural and Agricultural Show. This is a momentous year in the history of the show as it will be celebrating its 75th Birthday. It’s hard to imagine that this Show had started during the Second World War and that today the Show is still going strong. With that in mind, this year’s Show will take on a 1940’s theme. The committee will be instantly recognisable on the day, as they will be dressed in 1940’s style clothes. In the morning, entries will be arriving in transport that was relevant during that time, i.e., horse and cart, and tractors from that era which should be a great sight to see. There are a wide range of classes to enter, from baking, jams, eggs, knitting, craft, fruit, flowers, vegetables,

agricultural produce to art and photography. There is also a children’s section for the younger generation to enter. So why not have a go and enter. Entries can be taken on Saturday 8th August from 7pm to 9pm in the Hall, Castlebridge. Check out our website, www.castlebridgeshow.com for further details. The Show opens to the public at 1.45pm and there will be lots of things to see and do. Entry into the show is ₏5 per adult and children are free. The Fancy Dress starts off the afternoon with participants preferably dressed as a Vegetable, Fruit or Flower. The St Patrick’s Fife and Drum Band will provide some musical entertainment and that will be followed by the Baby Show. Our furry friends are well catered for again this year as we will have a Dog Grooming Demonstration

YĂœç|Çz \Ăœ|ĂĄ{Ă…tÇ FAST FOOD RESTAURANT

which will be followed by the Dog Show. Fido could go down in history as the 75th Dog of the Show! The very popular Pets Corner is included, with plenty of pets to come see and enjoy. Around the grounds there will be various stalls, from face painting to the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve. There will be an exhibition of 1940’s tools and equipment to see. You can pop into the tent and enjoy tea or coffee with some delicious home baking. The Best Dressed Lady and Gentlemen will be selected from the attendance on the day and in keeping with 1940’s theme, hopefully they will be dressed in 1940’s style clothes. The Show is a great family day and hopefully it will continue to be in the years to come.

Your SUMMER in Wexford Leo Carthy Weekend in Our Lady’s Island Three years ago a special weekend festival was inaugurated in Our Lady’s Island to honour the memory of a man who was synonymous with both the parish of Our Lady’s Island and traditional Irish entertainment. The Leo Carthy weekend has gone from strength to strength since that launch and this year’s event takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Leo gave a huge amount to music and cultural life not only in county Wexford but throughout the country and the festival is a fitting way of remembering him and celebrating the traditions and culture which were so much part of his life. The proceeds raised from the festival events have gone towards the funding of a music program in the local primary school, and to support the great work of the Irish heart foundation. The festival beings on Saturday

night with an opening variety concert in the Community Hall featuring numerous well know local artists The event will showcase top class talent and it promises to be a great night’s entertainment. For those interested in activity and a bit of a challenge events on the Sunday kick off with a 6 km fun run from the village at 1 O’clock. Then live music begins on the open air stage with Teresa and the Stars from 2pm, and will continue all day with many other well know local artists performing. There will be plenty of kids entertainment with a Bouncy Castle and Obstacle Course, duck race, Wexford Kayak Safari and face painting. There is also the big BBQ, tea and refreshments along with a number of local craft stalls. It promises to be a great day’s fun and entertainment for all the family, with plenty of free entertainment to keep everyone happy.

Dear Michelle I am a 40 year old man, single and am extremely shy and awkward with people. I find it very difficult to talk to people, especially women and often think I’m making a nuisance of myself. When I do go out socially I end up standing back from the group on my own and just don’t know what to say to people. Can you help? John Wexford Dear John Being able to chat to people is a skill and all skills can be learned. You need to do some preparation and work beforehand to get yourself ready:

• Raise your Self-Esteem – deep down you may feel that others are better or you’re just not enough • Use good body language (stand erect, unfold your arms, hold your head up and have good eye contact, smile a bit) • Connect with people by disclosing your life facts, opinions and feelings. If you don’t talk about yourself at all, then friendships fizzle out • Grow in self knowledge – if you don’t know who you are, you can’t truly connect. Know your strengths, weaknesses, opinions, interests, etc. • Be mindful – pay attention to what’s going on, you can catch details to talk about • Know some current topics – good topics are usually light and either funny or opinion provoking • Manage your limiting

beliefs / be aware of your negative thoughts (I’m making a nuisance of myself) and challenge them regularly to gain control • Use open ended questions these are questions that can’t be answered with Yes or No. Start questions with How, Where, Who, When, What and Why Practice makes perfect, so start chatting to everyone you come in contact with and yes you may feel silly and awkward to start off with, but stick with it and it will eventually become second nature to you. Sincerely Michelle If you would like a problem answered, contact Michelle at socialsinglesireland@gmail.co m

not affect intelligence, and in fact they can often be especially gifted in areas of interest. If someone’s sick or physically disabled, you can usually tell at a glance. But mental illnesses or conditions, those are much trickier. You need to spend some time in a person’s company and have knowledge of a particular condition beforehand if you’re to even spot it at all. That’s why people with Aspergers Syndrome have it so difficult, because their actions, stemming from a genuine difficulty to grasp social situations or norms, often results in them behaving in what seems rude or disrespectful to others, but actually has no malice behind it at all. It is this lack of understanding of people with Aspergers that often leads to people with Aspergers getting

Aspergers Syndrome Two recent events have inspired me to write about this topic. The first one is finding out that someone on my college course, who I have grown to know over the past year, has Aspergers. The second event was a case I read about online. It was the recent case of Gavin Joseph, an American teenager with Aspergers who was attacked by other teenagers. It was through discussion of this case that my classmate chose to

reveal that he has Aspergers syndrome. Aspergers syndrome is essentially a mild version of autism and often involves difficulty in reading social cues or other people’s emotions, which makes it difficult for people with this condition. People with Aspergers Syndrome often describe the process of being among other people as feeling like being dropped off in a foreign country or alien planet. This condition does

physically assaulted, or in the case of particularly mean spirited and conformist people, ongoing bullying. Such a case happened recently in the State of Illinois in America this month where a teenager with Aspergers was beaten up by youths, in a misguided self righteous attempt to teach him a lesson about not being “creepy”. The victim of this assault, Gavin Joseph, actually chose not to press charges for them to be arrested, and instead insisted they learn about his condition, as their community service. We have had similar cases in our own country, such as earlier this year in Cork when a gang of youths recorded themselves shoving twigs into the mouth of a teenage boy with autism ( as I stated previously, Aspergers is a mild version of autism). This shows just how widespread this ignorance and hatred towards people with Aspergers is among some

200 years to inspect Wexford septic tanks It’s not good enough that it will take over 200 years to inspect all the existing septic tanks in Wexford when half of them are faulty and our water table contaminates more and more by the day, Independent TD Mick Wallace told Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly recently. Deputy Wallace told the Dail that in Wexford, there are only two people to inspect 21,242 septic tanks and 4,369 individual treatment systems. 54 tanks were inspected in 2014 and Wexford County Council hoped to inspect 104 this year. He said the council needed more resources to inspect tanks and that it was outrageous that the water table

continued to be poisoned, something he believed to be directly linked to the high rates of some cancers. Wallace called for further changes to the current riskbased inspection system saying at present people couldn’t request an inspection of their own tank if they suspected something was wrong with it, while third party complaints were being ignored. Furthermore, if a person was to take the proactive step of fixing their own tank they couldn’t apply for a grant retrospectively. The outspoken TD outlined the reasons why many older and modern septic tank systems are not fit for purpose.

“Many tanks built in the early years — I built many of them — were built according to the planning conditions laid down and agreed by the local authority, but they were not right We built many of the tanks incorrectly but we did not know at the time,” Wallace said. In relation to the modern raised-bed solution Deputy Wallace outlined that for this system to work good quality topsoil was required to remove bacteria from the water, and this topsoil had to be imported. However, many developers opted to use soil straight from the land rather than import the expensive topsoil. He said the practice was widespread

during the boom and the result was our polluted water table. Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly acknowledged that Deputy Wallace had much direct evidence and knowledge of the subject and said he was open to changing the system “If the Deputy tells me or the local authority writes to me to say it believes it needs additional resources because of concerns it has, I must look at that. That goes for any local authority. If it is perceived there is a particular issue in a region or location such as the south east and if the local authorities make a submission to me, I must consider it,” Minister Kelly said.

young people. This is especially problematic considering that one per cent of the Irish population is on the autistic spectrum. Aspergers Syndrome has several distinct traits that if combined, often means that someone has this condition. Some of this traits include little to no eye contact while talking, tics such as staring at their hands or twisting their fingers, and daily rituals that they never deviate from, usually based around everyday activities. The condition is named after the man who first discovered it, Austrian doctor, Hans Asperger, in 1944. However, to truly understand what this condition is like, you need to hear it from someone with Aspergers themselves. I have received a speech about Aspergers from a 16 year old girl with the condition. I will quote a part of it, but she will remain anonymous. She described what it is like to have

Aspergers and how people are treated by other people, but the main point of the speech is summed up in one sentence halfway through it when she says “people are not educated in mental illness, people don’t really care about the invisible pain people go through”. Bullying and misunderstanding of autistic spectrum issues are two separate problems, but when put together, it can be a truly toxic combination. This applies anywhere from America to our own schools here in Ireland. this situation of ignorance towards those who are different and a culture of victimizing the weak in today’s youth will only continue to fester, if we do not all become collectively aware of it. To use a slightly graphic analogy, untreated wounds always become infected. We need to remember that when it comes to how people with Aspergers are treated today.

Female seakayakers make local history at carne beach Two Irish female seakayakers have entered local history books by being the first to paddle around the island of Ireland by starting and finishing on the Wexford shoreline. Wexford resident Susan Honan and Sonja Ewen from Leitrim departed from Carne Beach on June 7, and completed the circumnavigation at the same place on Wednesday, July 22. They arrived in typical sunny south-east sunshine to be greeted by a cheering party of family, friends and well-wishers. According to Sue Honan, who lives in Drinagh, “We decided to start at Carne because, with Carnsore Point not

too far away, we had a window of good weather with which to paddle along the south coast and reach Mizen Head before it changed for the worse.” Sonja Ewen reckons the total distance paddled was about 1,500km, with the hardest weather sections around Arklow and Kinsale. Mizen Head, Malin Head, Tor Head, Strangford Lough and Wicklow Head also provided tough challenges, and they lost 11 days due to inclement weather. It’s estimated that perhaps only six females had previously circumnavigated the island.

Big success for Bannow Fleadh group Danescastle Music Group and Bannow C.C.É. had great success at the Leinster Fleadh in Maynooth last weekend. Over fifty members of the group qualified for the All Ireland Fleadh in Sligo which will take place in August. The U12 group and band both took third place and were recommended to go forward to the All-Ireland Fleadh. Meanwhile the U18 and Senior Group took Second place and automatically qualified for the All-Ireland. It was great to see the Senior Group qualify as these musicians give generously of their time to the

group, passing on their music to the younger members. As well as success with the band and groups, members of the branch also had success in individual competitions. Those who received medals at the weekend are as follows: U/12 Results Caoimhe Moran 1st Harp Slow Airs & 1st Accompaniment, Diarmaid Murphy 1st Flute, 1st Flute Airs & 1st Whistling, Min Allen 1st Piano, Jamie Walsh 1st Mouth Organ, Eve Donohoe 2nd Tin Whistle Airs & 3rd Tin Whistle &

Who kept Mayor Carthy out of school picture? The Mayor of Wexford was not invited to the official signing of a major school contract at which the Minister for Public Enterprise presided, it has emerged. The only councillor invited to the event was Mr Howlin's Labour party colleague, George Lawlor. Mayor Ger Carthy told colleagues at a meeting of the Wexford District Council that he wanted to clear up any misunderstanding about his non attendance at the event. at the school of which he is a past pupil. 'I simply wasn't invited', he told the July meeting of the Council.

Cllr Lawlor said no offence was intended and he was invited because of the work he had done to get the new school over the line. The Board of Management had decided who would be3 invited he said insisting that a good news story should not be overshadowed. It has since emerged that the invitations to the signing were issued to Oireachtas members from the Office of Minister Howlin. There was strong criticism of the fact that the Mayor was not invited. Cllr Anthony Kelly said that as Mayor councillor Carthy should have been

invited to recognise the work of the Council in support of the school. He was supported by Cllr Davy Hynes who said the mayor certainly should have been in attendance at such an important event and he also suggested that all councillors should have been in attendance to recognise the ongoing efforts of the members for education in the town. Council members had been lobbying for the new school for years, he added. Cllr Fergie Kehoe did attend the signing but he revealed that he had not been invited in his own right. Deputy John

Browne had been invited and he asked Cllr Kehoe to attend on his behalf. He said a lot of councillor did a lot of work on behalf of the school and all should have been invited, but the Office of Mayor should certainly have been respected, he added. Mayor Carthy said he was disappointed as a past pupil not to be invited but said he just wanted to make it clear why he was not there. 'It is very difficult to be at something when you are not invited', he added.

Co. Wexford’s 2016 programme ‘looking good’ An outline programme of the events planned in Co. Wexford to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising was very well received when presented to a national committee recently, it has been revealed. The Wexford proposals were presented at a gathering hosted by the Ministers for Heritage

and the Environment and they compared very favourable with what is being planned in other parts of the country, Enniscorthy District Manager Padraig O'Gorman told local councillors. Meanwhile, it has been revealed that it is hoped to have the contractor in place at

The Athaenum by the end of September. The Ath has been described as Wexford's GPO and money has been made available by the government to have restoration works carried out on the building in time for next year's celebrations. However, there has been a delay in finalising contractors and work will not now being until the end of September. Council Chairman, Paddy Kavanagh said that they

would now be working to a very tight time line to have the job completed on time but without the cooperation of all they could succeed. It has also been revealed that funding for next year's festivities will be greater helped by the fact that the old Enniscorthy Town Council established a fund to go towards the event several years ago. It now stands at €70,000 money that will be a major boost to the event

Preserving birds being given priority over saving lives’ Walsh Regulations under the Wildlife Act aimed at protecting nesting birds in hedgerows are causing havoc with efforts to trim back ditches in busy rural areas and a member of Wexford Co. Council has suggested that the protections of birds is now being put before saving people's lives. Under wildlife regulations ditches can only be cut back where it is necessary for public safety but the rules are very strict. However, Blackwater based councillor Oliver Walsh has hit out at the regulations and he warned that overgrown ditches posed a danger to road users and could result in serious injury or death. He cited in particular the route to Ballyconnigar beach

in Blackwater. On this road the ditch has been cut back around signs on and the bends but the remainder of the ditch has been left to grow across the road. He said he understood the restrictions under which the local authority was working but said the situation was an accident waiting to happen. The was a very busy road in the summertime with a lot of people walking along it and the overgrown ditches meant that they were walking in the middle of the road. When told that the scale of the hedge cutting which had taken place on the route was the maximum which could be carried out under the Act he said it was a case of the protection of birds being put before the protection of lives.

Deirdre refuses to wish Twomey well on retirement Fine Gael TD Liam Twomey may have hoped that on his retirement from politics for personal reasons there would have been a united voicing of good wishes from his political colleagues and opponents through the county. But there was no unanimous good wishes for the Tagoat based doctor when his announcement was discussed at a meeting of the Wexford Borough District Council and the criticism came from a councillor based in his next door parish. As councillors began to praise Mr Toomey and wish him well councillor Deirdre Wadding asked if they were living in a different planet. The retirement was raised

by Cllr. Jim Moore who said he wished outgoing deputy Twomey well on his retirement. There were good wishes to from George Lawlor and Frank Staples and councillor Tony Dempsey, who served with Dr. Twomey in the Oireachtas for five years said he was an excellent legislator who did not seek the limelight. Mayor Ger Carthy said he had served the people well in difficult personal circumstances. But Deirdre Wadding said she wanted to disassociate herself from all the comments and good wishes and denounced the policies which he supported as a TD/

Wexford Pool, Courtown Adventure get funding boost

The Edermine Regatta held recently was a big success with plenty of entries in all events. The under 18 winners were Luke Harrington, Eamonn Jones, Marig Moulds,Cox, Donal Harrington and Ruairi Murphy from Edermine.

Wexford Swimming Pool & Courtown Adventure Leisure in Co. Wexford is to get a funding boost of €510,000 (€255,000 per centre) says Fine Gael Senator for Co. Wexford, Michael D’Arcy. “Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring T.D, this week announced grants totalling almost €3.4m to 16 swimming pools around the country, under the Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme energy efficiency upgrade and enhanced disabled access initiative. “Wexford Swimming Pool & Courtown Adventure Leisure in Co. Wexford is an important attraction for both locals and tourists. This funding will help improve the energy efficiency of the

pool and enhance the disabled access.” Speaking today, Minister Michael Ring said: ‘Swimming provides a marvellous sporting opportunity for people of all ages and abilities. I am delighted to be in a position to approve the grants for such worthwhile projects. Since coming into Government I have previously allocated more than €14m to swimming pools to improve energy efficiency and to enhance disabled access. This has enabled swimming pools to reduce their energy costs and provide improved access for disabled swimmers and I am very happy today to be in a position to assist a further 16 pools”.

Sun shines on Clonattin Picnic Day The sun shone and the crowds came with their teddies and blankets for the Clonattin Village (Phase 2) Residents' Association Summer Picnic Day on Saturday. The kids were kept busy on bouncy castles, danced their hearts out to the DJ and took part in the hotly contested rocket launch competition. A visit from the local Fire Service complete with hose demonstrations and soakings on demand was a highlight of

the day. Cllr Malcolm Byrne, Chairman of the local Municipal District Council, was on hand to cut the ribbon at the newly renovated playground which has had a facelift thanks to funding from Wexford County Council and a mural painted by local artists which all the children in the estate got to put their handprints on.
