County set for massive 2015 jobs boost Co. Wexford is set for a major employment boost in 2015 when up to seven hundred construction jobs are set to be created on two of the biggest road infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the county. The long awaited by-passes of both Enniscorthy and New Ross are finally set to go ahead in 2015 and they will bring a major jobs bonanza to the county with up to seven hundred people expected to be employed in total on the works. The preferred contractor for

the New Ross project has just been selected with contracts likely to be signed early in 2015 and plans for the Enniscorthy job are rapidly catching up. All the paperwork on the Enniscorthy project which will run from North of Camolin to South of Oylegate will sorted by the first quarter of next year, it is estimated The Co. Council’s Director of Services, Eamonn Hore believes that work will actually start on both jobs around the same time with the first sods being turned towards

the end of the third quarter of next year or at the very beginning of the fourth quarter. The projects will lead to hundreds of jobs being created in the county for the duration of the work. The Chairman of New Ross Municipal Council Larry O’Brien said the €215m New Ross by-pass would create up to three hundred jobs during construction and would provide a great boost to the local economy. The Enniscorthy work is likely to involve even greater employment levels and will start shortly before the Jack

White’s stretch of the N11 to Dublin is expected to be completed. Enniscorthy councillor Paddy Kavanagh said the opening of that part of the N11 would provide a major uplift for North Wexford and the same would happen further south when the Gorey by-pass is extended south past Enniscorthy. Cllr Kavanagh said it was important that the projects were not delayed at this stage.

Nurses win the lotto It will be a Christmas of great joy for a group of Wexford nurses, some of them retired and others still working at Wexford General Hospital, following a big win the last week’s mid-week lotto.

The seventeen nurses, a majority of whom are now retired, have been doing the Lotto as a syndicate for years but last week they hit the jackpot scooping the €2.8m jackpot. Each member of the

winning syndicate will receive in the region of €170,000 as a result of the win and celebrating too is the Abbey Shopping Centre in Enniscorthy where the winning ticket was purchased.

The bookies were on a loser in Gorey last week when armed raiders hit the Main Street premises of Boylesports and made off with a wad of cash. It is believed that the two raiders, who were wearing balaclavas, were armed with a handgun and a knife. After entering the premises the duo demanded cash from the staff and a sum of money was

Bride Street Church Choir in Wexford town will present the annual service of readings and carols, on Monday December 22nd at 6.30 pm. This has become a favourite Wexford event each Christmas, with the excellent four

part choir singing a selection of rare and well known Christmas music interspersed with readings from the Christmas story, all by the light of over two hundred candles. All are welcome to come along for a relaxing and refreshing break, to hear the real story of Christmas. Admission is free, with an optional retiring collection being taken up for the choir’s music fund. As the service takes place in near darkness, it is not suitable for very small children.

The busy N12 was brought to a halt as an eerie silence descended over the village of Ferns on Sunday evening as Fr. Jim Fitzpartick, the forty three years old priest who had served in the parish for fourteen years began his final journey from his home at Alderbrook. Fr. Fitzpatrick died on Saturday after a two year battle with illness which forced him to stand down from his position as curate in Screen/Curracloe in 2012. He was a much loved, admired and respected priest who was known for getting things done. A native of Gorey, he is survived by his parents Des and Muriel, his brothers Desmond and Garrett and sisters Jennifer and Valerie. He was laid to rest in Ferns cemetery on Monday following Requiem Mass in the parish church. In his homily at the mass Bishop Denis Brennan said ‘We are here today to do for Fr Jim what he himself did many times for many people, to commend him to the love and care of God our Father, and to pray for the comfort and consolation of his family’. No parent expects to lose a son in the prime of life, it’s not natural, it’s not the way you expect things to happen. But every so often it does happen, and when it does it’s heartbreaking. No family should have to bear that grief alone and

thankfully no family has to, in times of bereavement families are always surrounded by a faith community, people like Simon of Cyrene who step out of the crowd and put their hand to the cross. That’s why we are here today, to bridge the gap between the living and the dead. Death ends a life but it doesn’t end a relationship. Love is how we stay alive, even after we are gone. A day like today confronts

us with a very simple but very difficult question; where is God in this, where is God when it hurts, where is God now? As we all know there is no easy answer to that question, many people have struggled with it in times of pain, suffering and confusion, we struggle with it today. Fr Jim’s life has been about planting seeds that one day

will grow, here in Ferns and in Screen/Curracloe, watering seeds already planted, seeds of faith and hope, seeds of belief and encouragement. Like every priest Fr Jim worked and bore witness to a future that he would never see, a future that he would never own. To this work he brought a light, good humoured touch, an energy, an enthusiasm, and a ‘ don’t tell me it can’t be done ‘ approach. He was never happier than when he was immersed in a parish project. His enthusiasm was infectious and usually had the effect of getting other people involved. We mourn the loss of all this today, a son, a brother, a friend, a brother priest, a community builder. We are sad for what might have been, Fr Jim’s life was full of promise, for himself and for others. On the human level we grieve today, but we do so in the words of Paul in the 2ND Reading, we do so in hope, in the hope of eternal life. There is an old funeral prayer which says ‘’ you may cry because I have died or you may smile because I have lived.’’ For those of us who knew Fitzy, as he was affectionately known in clerical circles, this will not be a difficult choice.........I think he would want us to smile, even if sometimes we have to do it through our tears.

People may soon be asked to prove where their rubbish goes The day of reckoning is coming for people who dispose of their rubbish in plastic bags on the side of rural roads or in beauty spots. That was the message from Co. Council Director of Services for the Environment, John Carley, at the December meeting of the council when he highlighted the huge waste of resources involved in cleaning up waste which is being continuously dumped around the county. Mr Carley said the public in general were being forced to foot the bill for people who did not pay to have their refuse collected by one of the companies. However, he warned that a time would come when people would have to declare how they disposed of their waste and they would have to prove

the method they used if they were not signed up with one of the companies. As part of new legislation and in the not too distant future Mr Carley said he

expected that the local authority would be able to ask people where they disposed of their rubbish. But he ruled out people being asked that question in advance of new legislation

saying that people sent out by the Council for such a purpose would have the door slammed in their face. That legislation is likely to address situations where a

person uses the bin of a relative to dispose of refuse. Under the new law there will be a clause which will cover the shared use of a bin by two households, but not by more than two.

This was an assurance given by Philippa King, Regional Waste Co-Ordinator in response to queries raised by councillors James Browne and Deirdre Wadding who both use the bins of family members to dispose of their waste. And she said that when waste is charged by weight, as is likely to happen in Wexford next year, people with a bag only service will not be adversely affected. The operators will carry an empty bin on the trucks to weight the waste. The meeting heard concerns voiced by many councillors over the level of illegal dumping. Cllr Barbara Ann Murphy said she always carried black bags and a pair of rubber gloves in her car and picked up rubbish she discovered on the side of the

road. Cllr Robbie Ireton said public waste bins were full to overflowing and people were complaining about the Council when the problem was they

do right. First of all we have the continued case of Michael brown, a black 18 year old unjustly shot by Darren Wilson, a cop. Michael Brown’s Killer has been set without even a trial. Then we have the shooting dead of a 12 year old black boy, Tamir Rice, by police, and the case of Ricky Jackson, who was falsely imprisoned for 39 years and only recently released, so its safe to say that, between all these different cases, there is a lot to answer for. How the Michael Brown case has just been handled by the authorities is wrong for so many rensons, which I will now explain. First of all, the prosecutor on this case, Robert McCulloch, has proved himself with past statements and his own personal history to be too biased to serve as the prosecutor .. His brother Joseph McCulloch served in the St Louis Police Force, his father Paul McCulloch was a policeman shot dead in St Louis, and Robert McCulloch himself has stated that he would have joined the policeforce , if he had not lost a leg from cancer. He also defended the St

Louis Police Department against charges of brutality when undercover cops shot dead two unarmed black men, with a grand total of 21 shots fired, in 2000. The victims were Earl Murray, a drug dealer,

and his friend Ronald Beasley. The charges against the police were dropped, with Robert McCulloch as the prosecutor on this case, saying afterwards he thought the verdict the jury reached was just. Did you see the interview with Darren Wilson? My God, the saying “evil is banal” comes to mind. Darren Wilson’s statements would be almost funny in their outlandishness if people didn’t believe them, and he quite literally got away with murder because of it. He claimed he thought it was legal to shoot Michael Brown and he was forced to shoot him , but if he really carefully thought it through, then how come Michael Brown’s body

was left on the street for hours afterwards, and no other police were immediately called to the scene? That seems like the actions of a suspicious man to me. When your entire defence boils down to “he was scary, so I shot him”, you’re basically just pandering to your fellow racists and hoping their loyalty will save you. Sadly, in this case, that tactic worked perfectly for Darren Wilson. The same logic that was used to justify lynching’s of black men in late 19th century and over the first half of the 20th century is still alive and well in modern day America it seems. One thing that has been noted by many people is the fact that communities in America are not policed by people actually from that community. Black ghettos in America are policed mainly by white outsiders. This is a problem, because not only is there the issue of the racist tendencies of a disproportionate amount of the American police force , but also because when you place cops in communities they know nothing about, they perceive everything as a threat, like an occupying army in a foreign country. They call it the land of the free, but at this point that phrase just sounds like a twisted joke. As long as there remains no justice for the victims of both police brutality and the American legal system, there shall be no peace. You cannot complain about riots if you give people every reason to be angry by denying them any hope that there are repercussions for engaging in a racist system that continues to persecute, and that’s the bottom line.

Rescued Grey Seal returned to the sea There were happy scenes in Courtown last week when a Grey Seal which had found itself in difficultly was safely returned to the sea with the assistance of Seal Rescue Ireland. The Seal’s safe return to the water was achieved as a result of the great efforts of Liz James and Tina Beaver and they were on hand again to play their part in helping the Grey Seal back into the water. Patrick Hogan was on hand to capture the happy moment when the Seal was released back into the water by Liz and Tina. No rate grant scheme for Gorey Gorey is now the only town in the county which does not have a business and retail incentive scheme spearheaded by the Co. Council following the adoption of the New Ross scheme by members of the Co. Council at their December meeting. The scheme, which offers 75% of the annual rates liability on a property as a grant towards fit out costs of a vacant premises in year one with relief of 50% in year two and 25% in year three, covers much of the commercial centre of New Ross. A similar scheme

already operates in parts of Enniscorthy and now there are calls for it to be extended to the town centre. The scheme in Wexford town has similar grants available but is mainly available for large commercial office units. Cllr. Robbie Ireton highlighted the fact that Gorey, where business people pay the highest rates in the county, was getting nothing back under the scheme and was now the only town left out. Director of Services Tony Larkin pointed out that there were fewer

vacant premises in Gorey than anywhere else in the county and it was difficult to see what value the scheme could have in the town. However he said if there was a particular street or area identified by members he would examine it. He has also undertaken to look at the possibility of extending some sort of grant scheme to Courtown where there are many vacant premises. The next location to benefit from the scheme is likely to be Bunclody.

Only half of county’s 20,000 dogs have a licence ‘Only half the estimated 20,000 dogs kept in Co. Wexford are licenced, it has emerged. The estimate of the dog numbers in the county has come from the IFA who have been in discussions with members of the Co. Council following recent serious sheep kills in various parts of the county. Now Co. Councillors are backing the IFA’s call for action and they have written to the Minister for the Environment calling

on him to reactive a TV commercial which had been aired for many years highlighting the problem and urging dog owners to act responsibility. The television commercial call came at the suggestion of Cllr Oliver Walsh while Cllr Pip Breen highlighted

the fact that there was just a single dog warden in the county to deal with a dog population of 20,000.

Focus on the positives and have a better Christmas As another year draws to a close people everywhere will reflect on the past twelve months and look forward to a New Year. Once again it has been a year dominated by talk of austerity, protests over austerity, opposition to charges, stories of homelessness and consistent claims that many people do

not have even a cent left at the end of the week as they struggle to pay their household bills. However, despite the endless talk of austerity and all the protests over cuts and charges there are signs that things are getting a fair bit better in the country as a whole. It is true that many

people do not feel that they are getting any benefit from the uplift and to be fair there is a type of conditioning going on in some quarters which ensures that many individuals do not feel that things are improving. If the media is dominated by protests, stories of hardship and predictions that

even more people will be without homes in the next few years it is hardly surprising that whole communities are not feeling confident about their situation. But the reality is that more people are working and things are a lot better than they were a few years ago, That does not of course mean that all boats are lifting. They are not. But still I cannot help thinking that at least some of those who join the various protests, particularly against water rates, in reality have little to protest about. It would be wrong to paint all protesters with the one brush but for some at least it’s not about paying charges but about principle and about creating an environment in which left wing politics can make progress. Some who don’t want to pay a penny for their water, for example, have no difficulty putting their hands in their pockets to pay for relatively expensive cups of coffee in cafes and many more will have Sky Sports in their homes. I am not for one minute suggesting that they are not entitled to these things, but to argue that you cannot pay anything for water while being able to afford some less vital comforts does to an extent expose the real

agenda behind the protests. During this Christmas season perhaps it might be a good idea for more of us to appreciate just how fortunate and well off we are, relatively speaking. The shocking death of a homeless man in Dublin last week should certainly be a wakeup call for everyone. As I sat at home recently with our Labrador ‘Midnight’ sleeping soundly in front of the fire I couldn’t help but think that it is an unequal and

unfair world alright. Here was a dog with all the comforts of home with plenty of heat and food while on that very same night so many people across the country, even a few in Co. Wexford, had no such comforts and were sleeping out under the elements. To be fair several public representatives in Co. Wexford have been warning about the growing crises facing people in relation to

accommodation for several months and it is an area which deserves urgent State attention. Indeed, since the recent tragedy it does appear that many of the State agencies and voluntary groups are coming together to provide a rapid response to the problem. So for the next few weeks, rather than driving themselves into a depression by endlessly concentrating on the negatives and consistently focusing on what is wrong in the country or in their own community people might be a lot better off for the festive season at least if they focused instead on the positives. There are those who would argue that there are no positives in many people’s lives. Those making those arguments are often pretty comfortably off themselves, mind you, and I am sure for a small number of people things are very difficult. However, if you have a roof over your head., heat, food and most importantly of all, good health, you have much to be thankful for because there are many others in a much worse place and of that I am certain. So my hope is that people enjoy and be thankful for what they have this festive season and I hope you all have a Peaceful and Happy Christmas

Gorey was well lit up in the end Gorey was once the leading light in the county when it came to marketing itself. Back when other towns were struggling with the notion of traders joining forces to promote their area business people in Gorey were way out in front with their joint promotions and Christmas experiences.

I’m talking about a couple of decades ago here. It must have been frustrating then for those trading in the town to see Wexford and Enniscorthy stealing a bit of a march on them with the launch of Christmas trading this year. There is a lot of anger in the town over the delay in having the festive lights erected and

I’d say there will be plenty of noise in the New Year aimed at ensuring that things are improved during 2015. The good news of course is that when the lights were eventually switched on they looked spectacular and there was a real festive feel about the town

together on this. The suggestion nearly had Enniscorthy councillor Paddy Kavanagh chocking on his bottled water. The mention of steel in particular drew gasps from across the chamber. However, it’s an interesting concept and if the Council were to form some sort of joint recycling initiative with members of the Travelling Community Cllr. Kavanagh

would be the obvious man to head up the project given his close association with the travelling community over the years. Indeed, if they were to go one further and form joint commercial enterprise together the ideal name comes to mind ‘Paddy and Paddies Ltd’. However, I suspect that pigs may fly before this particular venture gets off the ground.

Guess who was speeding through the village? Complaints about traffic problems outside schools are a regular item on the agenda of local Council meetings with local politicians facing the anger of parents on a regular basis. Speeding through villages is another problem that takes up a lot of time. In respect of schools and parking it has often been suggested that it is the parents themselves who are largely to blame. There was also a

suspicion that it can sometimes be local residents who are speeding through villages. Of course there is really no proof of this, or is there? Well there is in a village which shall remain nameless. It was the subject of a lot of anger from locals over speeding cars with public representatives getting it in the neck.. They in turn were passing on the concerns to the Gardai who decided to set up speed patrols to deal with the

issue. Among those caught on the first day of the operation were two people who had been most vocal in their complaints about the speeding problem through the village--------one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. They were not impressed, it seems, but the tale does go the show that often these difficulties in rural villages are home grown.

No rubbish at home for James and Deirdre Enniscorthy councillor James Browne (son of TD John) is a lucky boy. So too is Deirdre Wadding, well not a lucky boy, but you know what I mean.. Neither has ever had to pay any bin charges. James told a council meeting that he has very little waste, but what he does have he takes home to his mother and puts it in her bin. Deirdre too is not one for signing up with refuse collectors. She has been taking the rubbish from her home and placing it in her father’s bin in Wexford town. Both councillors would be protected under new legislation aimed at curbing the dumping of waste around the country because if you are using someone else’s bin you can declare that fact to an inspector. Sadly Deirdre suffered the loss of her father recently so regardless of the legislation that option will not be available to her in the future.

Protecting your home this Christmas During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season we can become quite complacent when it comes to our home security. Unfortunately in many cases it’s not until an incident occurs in a locality before we become more security conscious. At this time of year burglaries can increase by 25% with over 40% of these occurring between 5pm and 11pm. It often only takes some simple measures to deter wouldbe thieves from your home. Ensure all doors and windows are secure. The presence of a burglar alarm will often encourage thieves to move onto the next house likewise the presence of good lighting is a good deterrent. Burglar alarms are only as good as their users, it is important to set your alarm

whether you’re going out for ten minutes or two hours. It is also important to ensure there is someone to respond to an alarm when it activates. Far too often when activation occurs there is no key-holder available to respond, especially around the holiday season. If you are going away and you have a neighbour listed as a key-holder, make sure to inform your neighbour. If this is not an option then you will need to look at using a keyholding company. You do not need to be away to activate your alarm as there is an increase in theft while the home is occupied. Often simple things such as leaving a light on in parts of the house to give an occupied appearance also if you are going to be away for a number of days

the use of a timer switches on lights can be very effective as a light left on in the day can also highlight your absence. If you’re going to be away for a longer period then ensure someone clears away accumulations of post, milk deliveries and if your bin is left out get it brought in. This service can be provided through our holiday cover package. If you are one of many people who display your Christmas tree in your front window, then please ensure it is possible to pull over curtains to hide this when the house is vacant. Likewise from a fire safety point of view ensure Christmas lights are turned off when away or when going to bed. Keys of cars should be left out of site and away from doors

and windows. There have been over 200 cases where car keys have been fished out through letter boxes in the past year. It is important to ensure all valuables are kept secure and details of valuables are recorded. Do not keep large amounts of cash at home. For those with elderly neighbours or relatives please ensure you call into them on a regular basis and review their security and where present test panic buttons regularly or consider installing one. If you require further information or a consultation please don’t hesitate to contact either South East Security & Safety Ltd. on 040234830 or your local Garda crime prevention officer on 053 9165200.

‘Mr Christmas’ George (94) dies in accident There was widespread shock throughout Wexford following the death in a car accident on Sunday of a man who was synonymous with Christmas in the town for generations. Ninety four years old George Bridges died in a three car collision at Murrintown . For decades he ran the town’s main toy stores at Selskar and was well known for placing newspaper adverts

over several months which counted down the weeks to Christmas. The death also occurred at the weekend of the former Wexford Borough Engineer, Tom Fahey, of Rocklands, Wexford. Mr Fahey served the local authority for many years and was deeply involved in several major infrastructural developments in the town. He will be laid to rest in Barntown

Four towns to get new managers Clerks now have the status of Meetings Administrators. Now the County Chief Executive, Tom Enright, has announced that the Department of the Environment has approved of his plans for the creation of four new Town Managers at Co Secretary level status. Interviews for the positions will be held early in the New Year and it is expected the jobs

The county’s four main towns are to get new District Managers early in the New Year as part of the next phase of local government reorganisation. Since the abolition of the four Town Councils last May the towns have been in a type of limbo situation with four Co. Council Directors of Services doubling as Town Managers. The former Town

will be filled by the end of January. The new managers will become the public face of local government in each of the four towns and will have a key responsibility for delivering local government services in each of the town. And the plan is to return responsibility for the delivery of as many services as possible to the Municipal District

Offices, the Chief Executive has revealed. There has been a broad welcome for the news that the new managers are to be appointed with the expectation that they will work closely with local groups and councillors to deliver programmes appropriate to each of the towns and rural districts served by the four Municipal District Councils.

Swimming bans cause problems for training An urgent review is to take place over the erection of ‘no swimming’ signs at Piers and Harbours across the county following the revelation that all Swim Wexford training activities may have to be scrapped as a result of the notices. Co. Council officials have undertaken to carry out a speedy review after the issue was raised by councillors Martin Murphy and Pip Breen at the December meeting of Wexford Co. Council. Cllr Breen said he was

concerned that all piers and harbours had been designated no swim zones in recent times while councillor Murphy said the situation was very urgent. If the signs remained in place Swim Wexford would not be able to conduct training. ‘It has to be addressed’ he warned. Regardless whether or not the water was safe Swim Wexford would not be prepared to conduct training in plaices with ‘No Swimming’ signs he told the meeting.

Wexford Marinewatch celebrates 2nd birthday The highly successful voluntary group Wexford Marinewatch reached another milestone this week, with its 2nd anniversary. The Voluntary organisation provides suicide prevention and safety measures in Wexford Harbour several nights a week. This is the second year running since records began, that no-one has died through suicide in the Harbour. Since its inception in December 2012 however, the

organisation has dealt with over 94 incidents and prevented 28 people from entering the water in Wexford Harbour. It has also replaced 22 vandalised Ringbuoys and recoiled 64 Ringbuoy ropes. All the volunteers are trained in Suicide Prevention, and First Aid - in addition to completing regular training exercises with Wexford RNLI Lifeboat. Chairman Frank Flanagan said: “We are delighted to have saved so many lives and give

so many people an alternative to suicide in the last two years. It is a remarkable achievement for our volunteers and for the local community. These volunteers give up their time to go out in all weather conditions to assist those in difficulty and who are contemplating suicide at the waters edge”. “Because we do not publicise most interventions we make, people may have the impression that suicide is no longer prevalent in Wexford.

Sadly this is far from the truth and there is a need now, more than ever for what we do” he added. “Some people feel they have nowhere to turn and do not want to burden their family or friends”. The organisation, which receives no state funding and relies entirely on donations from the public, now has in excess of 60 trained Volunteers - the past year has seen them open a new Base allowing them to expand their range of Rescue equipment as well as

providing changing facilities for the Volunteers - in addition to adding a second vehicle to their fleet. There are further plans afoot for 2015. Mr. Flanagan added: “We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thankyou to the Emergency Services of Wexford town, whose support and rapid response to incidents has also directly contributed to Marinewatch’s success rate. The skill and compassion shown by these services towards casualties,

particularly those suicidal, is remarkable and a credit to Wexford”. Anyone who is experiencing difficulty or contemplating suicide can contact the Samaritans 24hrs a day on 116123 – this call is free. How Angela gave ‘Saria’ its name When Angela Mulcahy arrived in Wexford in the late 1970s it was a case of love at first sight. ‘I just loved Wexford and it’s people’ says Angela

who has had a long and active career in her adopted town. She is now the owner of ‘Saria’s’ ladies wear at North Main Street.

Call 087 2132544 Reville Collectables Wellingtonbridge Open 7 Days 2pm to 5pm

There’s a story behind how Angela selected the name: ‘Saria’ is Maria with an S and Sara with an I’. she explains and both of those are the two loves of her life. Maria is her daughter and Sara is her granddaughter. Angela is very well known in Wexford having established the Clonard majorettes shortly after her arrival. She was joined in that task by Eileen Reddy, a school friend from Kilkenny. Angela was well equipped to train the majorettes having been a dance teacher in Kilkenny before her arrival in Wexford. ‘I was always a dreamer and as a little girl I always knew that I

would be a dance teacher and at the age of seventeen my Dance Teacher was leaving Kilkenny to get married and offered me her school. My dream had come true’. Angela developed her love of clothes from dancing and modelling

and her desire to go into retail was realised in the early 1980s when she opened up Temptations Boutique with Margaret Spring. Starting on the quays she then moved to Main Street before opening in Enniscorthy. After ten years in Enniscorthy Angela is

now back in Wexford with ‘Saria’s’ which is celebrating its first anniversary and to mark the occasion Angela is giving up to 70% off on selected items, but everything is reduced. ‘It’s Christmas and time to give back’ she says.

Introduction

While everyone else is getting holidays from school and work, we’re just getting into our busiest time in the year. Between Christmas parties and some huge nights in the club, we’ll be kept busy! We’ll be on the town throughout the week asking questions to random people, so if you see us, come over for a chat! Hope you enjoy, and thanks for reading!!

TUNE OF THE WEEK Pogues - Fairytale of New York

Not a massive fan of Christmas songs in general, but I can’t help but sing along when this comes on on ChristmasFM!

Snapchat of the Week This week is the return of the better-looking & more popular Ennis. Super Lee has once again hit the nail on the head with his recent Snapchat. Ah boy lee! His

brother must be ashamed living in his shadow all his life haha g’way Adam! :P

Eoin Healy What Are Your Thoughts?

Last week we saw an estimated 100,000 people protesting along the streets of Dublin over the water charges which have been put in place. I get that the whole point of the protests is to kick up a fuss, and if that’s the sole purpose, then I suppose they succeeded. At the same time, when I see these things I can’t help wondering if they do more harm than good? I just think there’s a better way to go about it, than to take to the streets with signs in the freezing cold and lashing rain. For one thing, while it’s bringing things to a standstill, you have the elderly and

children stranded out in the cold and rain waiting for buses that aren’t coming. There are Irish shops losing out on business during the busiest weeks of the year because people can’t get in to the city.

These are people in the exact same boat as the ones out protesting and no one gives them a second thought. Why not go protest outside The Dáil,

and keep streets like O’Connell Street free, so buses can still operate and shops aren’t losing out? To top the whole thing off, after every single protest in Ireland, without fail, you’ll see an onslaught on videos of police brutality and the likes taking over Facebook. Surely it would be handier for everyone to just think of another way to show you’re not happy! I want to hear people’s opinions. Do you agree with the people protesting? Do you think people should just pay for their water like they do in loads of other countries? Tweet me @I_Rant_A_Lot or Facebook me on “/adamjayennis94”. Adam

USELESS FACT OF THE WEEK In the 1800's your favourite sauce ketchup was actually first sold as a medicine. So, if we were all living back in the day, you’d be putting medicine on your chips

Rocking out! What’s On & Where? We’re preparing for some of the busiest nights of the year down in Metropolis this week. We’ve 3 massive nights planned. Including WEXFORD’S BIGGEST EVER 18+ SNOW PARTY on the 20th. Then for Stephen’s night, which will of course be the busiest night of the year, we have DJ Cullie on deck duty down in Metropolis until 2am. Then to wrap the week up, I’ll be playing there for New Year’s Eve! It’s always my favourite gig of the year and I can’t wait for another one!!  Feel free to message the page for any more details.  Adam

and the line-up is quite brilliant! the last Slane was average enough as it was all rap artists and Eminem was headlining, so it was kind of like one big episode of Loose Women just loads of people talking about their problems. It wasn’t my cup of tea at all, I must say. This year it's gone back to its rock roots, the way it should be, with Foo Fighters headlining and support from Kasier Chiefs and the excellent Hozier. With a line up like this it takes all the 16 year old posers who think they like music out of the way as they will be more interested in putting on

their fake tan than going to see the Foo Fighters. Which, I have to say, I can’t wait for because most of the gigs I've been at recently have been

ruined by posers attending with no interest in the artist but just going to get a shift.

So, that's Slane sorted and the Aviva stadium has announced a gig this week as well! :) Aussie rockers AC/DC are coming back to Ireland! Amazingly. they have just released their 15th Album, which is unreal when you think about it. Only thing turning me off this gig is that the cheapest ticket is €86...Ouch!!! But as always their age will be thrown out the window and they will of course rock the Aviva of next summer. -

LARRY O’GORMAN

The man who gets Behind the Sports Headlines

Another dream comes true for The Brother Well folks I hope you are not too cold back home but I am thinking of you all as I enjoy the sun, sea and everything else out here. I haven’t been thinking much about hurling in recent weeks, not that there was much hurling to think about anyway, but I was preoccupied with my big day. Yes I had one of the best days of my life last week when I got married to my long time girlfriend Dara and what a day it was. We really had the time of our lives. We, of course, had all the family there for the occasion and we had friends from far and near and it was absolutely great to see my old team mates from the 1996 All Ireland winning team and the manager Liam Griffen turn up. I couldn’t help but think as I looked at Tom Dempsey and some of the others how much they have aged since that great day eighteen years ago whereas I think I am looking younger than ever and I might even be better looking too, but

I know it’s difficult to improve on near perfection. But it wasn’t just the hurling heroes of old who made the night. Olympic boxer Paddy Barnes also called in to say hello and there was a host of others. It truly was a great day and wonderful day and I Damien Fitzhenry, Tom Dempsey, Sean Flood, Ger Cushe & Larry couldn’t be happier. One of Murphy from the team of ’96 pictured with Dara and Larry. Pic Noel Reddy the real highlights for And it didn’t stop on the have wished us well over the me was when my old team night when the band played the last few weeks. Just like mate Seanie Flood got up on final piece of music but winning an All-Ireland medal stage and rocked the house continued for a few days. So in ‘96 marrying Dara was down with some great songs. on behalf of my wife Dara and another dream come true for What a voice he has and it myself I’d just to say thanks The Brother. really brought back memories very much to everyone who Please God I’ll be back to of those great days during attended and made it such a look at the hurling scene in the 1996 and it was wonderful to wonderful and memorable New Year, but in the meantime see so many of our friends occasions. Thanks too to the have a very Happy Christmas enjoying themselves. huge numbers of people who and enjoy yourself.

The Holy Grail comes to Wexford town

Newly opened in Selskar Square in Wexford, The Holy Grail is without doubt a pleasure to experience. As you enter the door you get the WOW! Factor. The décor lives up to its name displaying medieval themed walls and floors with plush seating and ambient lighting to set the mood for your dining experience. The walls

have been air brushed by local artist Nicky Walsh which took him four weeks to complete. An astounding piece of artistry by this talented man and truly the art lives up to the Holy Grail name. A sight to behold and this diner had to get up from their seat to take a closer look! The staff greet you with a warm, friendly welcome as you enter into their world and promptly see to your requirements. Manoj, Simon and the rest of the staff are very experienced in what they do. Manoj holds over 14 years’

experience with food here in Ireland and before that in the 5 star rated Taj Group of Hotels in India.

Biju, Manoj’s brother, has been at the root of the ‘Grail’ in Ballindaggin for over eight years and now caters for a packed house from morning to night in Enniscorthy. Customers are coming from far and near to eat their fill – Arklow, Gorey, New Ross and Kilkenny. The menu, like its sister restaurants in Ballindaggin and Enniscorthy, will please everyone including vegetarians

and kids with dishes from around the world such as Chinese, Italian, European, Indian and even an allday breakfast – what more could you ask for?! Being well known for the ‘Grails Curry’, truly they are Curry Specialists. However, from Carvery to Curry, Steak to Salads it will be hard to choose no doubt and on presentation of your meal you will be wowed yet again at the generous portions you are given. Also a family friendly environment The Holy Grail truly is a great dining experience.
