HOSPITAL ORDERED TO SPEND ¤1/2m HSE CASH ON DERELICT BUILDING

WEXFORD General Hospital and the HSE have been landed with a shock 1/2m bill to carry out urgent repairs and safety work on the derelict building which used to provide surgical services for the entire county until the early 1990s. The old hospital, which is a Listed Building and Protected

Structure, is now a derelict and dangerous site and Wexford Co. Council has ordered its owners to carry undertake safety work to the roof and other parts of the building to protect the public. It is estimated that the cost of the work could be as much as 1/2m, but it will certainly not be less than €400,000. Administrators at Wexford General will now have to apply for the cash from the HSE’s Capital Works Programme and money which could have been used to improve facilities for patients using hospital wards and other facilities will instead be spent trying to make safe a roof on a

building which has been unoccupied for almost a quarter of a century. The problem for health bosses is that the old County Hospital, which was originally a Workhouse, is a Listed building and cannot be demolished. Campaigners who sought the Listing of the building envisaged the development of residential facilities for the elderly or the creation of a museum in the historic building. However, once the listing of the site was approved the campaign to develop the building lost momentum and even during the Celtic Tiger years no cash was provided for any developments on the site. Now the cost of the neglect of the building is set to be felt by the public as scarce resources are spent to make safe what is essentially a derelict site safe rather than providing new and improved facilities for patients. And the Mayor of Wexford, Cllr. George Lawlor has said it is time to shout stop. Mr Lawlor said great efforts had been made by local representatives to have the building Listed when it ceased to operate as a working hospital originally.

News FREE EVENTS FOR OPERA DAY

WEXFORD Festival Opera is to invite the public to mark European Opera Days by visiting Wexford Opera House on Saturday, 10 May to take part in several free events. This year’s theme for European Opera Days is A Journey to Opera. Since their beginning, the European Opera Days have encouraged participating opera companies to open their doors and invite audiences in to discover and to understand the ‘making of’ opera. Wexford Festival Opera was born out of the community and this event gives an opportunity to bring ‘the community’ back into the opera house to discover opera in the offseason. The day will begin in the Jerome Hynes Theatre with a screening of the 2005 film Joyeux Noël, which tells the story of the spontaneous 1914 Christmas truce between enemy combatants in the First World War and inspired librettist Mark Campbell and composer Kevin Puts to write the 2012 Pulitzer Prize-winning opera

Silent Night, which will receive its European premiere at Wexford this October. At 2 pm, also in the Jerome Hynes Theatre, composer Eric Sweeney, librettist Mark Roper and producer Joan Dalton of the new Irish opera, THE INVADER, coming to Wexford Opera House on Friday, 30 May will take you through their journey in creating this very special opera, written especially to mark the Waterford 1100 celebrations this year. Screenings of large scale, international operas have become very popular and for this reason, Wexford Opera House will show a very popular International Opera production in the 771 seat O’Reilly Theatre at 3pm. Details to be announced shortly! Tickets for all events are free, but must be booked online at www.wexfordoperahouse.ie, telephoning the box-office at 053 912 2144 or by calling into the opera house Monday through Saturday, 10am to 5:30pm.

Wexford Fans in Old Trafford to salute Giggs IT was the start of a new era at Old Trafford on Saturday evening when the Class of 92, headed by Ryan Giggs took over the management of the team following the departure of David Moyes earlier in the week and the Wexford Manchester United Supporters Club were on hand to cheer on Giggs and the team who found the back of the net four times in their 4-0 victory over Norwich. The Wexford Supporters trip had been long planned but they were lucky enough to be in Old Trafford to watch a piece of history as Giggs took charge of the team. And judging by our picture they were obviously determined not to miss a single piece of the action and took their seats in the stand well before kick off. The annual general meeting of Wexford Branch of the Manchester United Supporters Club takes place in Browne’s of Bishopswater on Monday night next May 5th. at 8pm. All members are asked to attend and new members are also welcome.

U.S. Poet to read in Wexford

Local Poet Jim Maguire who will read with american visitor Lawrence Kessenich THE American poet Lawrence Kessenich will be at the Wexford Arts Centre on May 1st for a reading with Wexford's Jim Maguire. Kessenich, a past winner of the Strokestown International Poetry Prize, has had a noteworthy literary career. As well as being a poet, he worked for many years as an editor and talent scout for one of America's

major publishing companies, Houghton and Mifflin, and is credited with the discovery of the manuscript of the book that was later to become the Hollywood film Field of Dreams starring Kevin Costner. He was also one of the editors on the collected works of the major American poet Anne Sexton, whose poetry became the basis for the opera Transformations, which was performed at the 2006 Wexford Festival and is remembered as one of the Festival's all-time successes. His own poetry has been widely published and has been acclaimed for its high level of craftmanship and 'the apparent ease' with which it celebrates ordinary life. He will be reading with local poet Jim Maguire whose recent book, Music Field, has been much praised by critics in the UK. Jim, who teaches in Wexford VTOS, is also a past winner of the Strokestown prize.

THEY are used to being associated with performances, both of the panto variety and with Wexford Drama Group, but there were no panto moments or unexpected drama when Tomas O’Leary and Emma Moynihan staged their very own performance in front of one hundred and seventy five guests in the Church of the Assumption, Bride Street, on Friday last. The happy couple, who are associated with various stage groups in Wexford, were blessed with great weather for the occasion. Emma is daughter of Aidan and Elaine and Tomas is son of Tom and Ann. After the Church ceremony the couple celebrated their we4dding in the Riverbank House Hotel. Pictured are the happy couple posing for photographs as they left the Church after the ceremony and above Emma pictured with her parents Elaine and Aidan.

Jimmy Gahan’s

‘Views from Vinegar Hill’ COUNTING THE COST OF FRIDAY’S BIG FIRE THE cost of last Friday afternoon’s fire at the well known electrical premises of John Cloke and Son, in Enniscorthy’s Weafer Street, has still to be determined, but damage is certain to run into a six figure sum. The fire broke out shortly after lunch and while firefighters managed to contain it to the ground floor of Cloke’s, a number of nearby properties also suffered severe smoke and water damage. Studio 5 Hair Salon and the Constituency Office of Minister of State Paul Kehoe

T.D. located on either side of Cloke’s, had to be evacuated during the fire, as did a number of overhead apartments. All suffered smoke and water damage and Mr. Kehoe’s office will require considerable re-decoration before constituency clinics can resume there. Mr. Kehoe was in the office at the time of the outbreak and assisted in containing the fire until the arrival of fire brigade units who then took charge of operations. A total of 5 people are

believed to have been made temporarily homeless as a result of the outbreak and Enniscorthy Town Council officials, including Town Clerk, Dave Minnogue, spent the weekend securing accomodation for those affected. It is now believed accomodation has been found for all residents of the apartments but it will be some yet before they can return to their own properties. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but an electrical fault is thought the most likely

cause given the speed with which it ignited. Staff had left the premises less than an hour earlier with no indication of anything being amiss. Yet within 45 minutes, thick black smoke was seen billowing from the premises and by the time the first of two units of Enniscorthy Fire Brigade arrived on the scene, the fire had a firm grip. Firefighters immediately set about containing the blaze to the ground floor of Cloke’s but because of the dense smoke, they experienced considerable

difficulty in accessing the building. A second unit arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and using breathing apparatus equipment, firefighters managed to make their way inside the shop where they quickly located the centre of the blaze. Within a short time they had the outbreak under control but it took several hours before it was finally extinguished. Enniscorthy Gardai implimented an emergency traffic plan as the firefighting

operation continued. All traffic was diverted away from the centre of Enniscorthy and this, in turn, resulted in major traffic disruption throughout Friday afternoon and early evening. Long queues developed on all approach roads to the town bringing commercial activity in the centre of Enniscorthy to a virtual standstill. Shortly before 5 p.m., however, the emergency services gave the all clear and activity slowly returned to normal.

THE Mayor said the hospital itself faced a totally unacceptable situation when money which could be used to improve facilities for patients and their families at Wexford General would instead have to be spent repairing a roof on a derelict building and carrying out other repairs to ensure it doesn’t present a danger to the public. ‘ This building has to be deListed at this stage. It would cost tens of millions to do anything constructive with the old hospital and that is not going to happen. It is the time to get rid of the Listing for the building’ Cllr Lawlor added. He said the building should be deListed and then demolished. An appropriate memorial should be developed on the site to the memory of the people who spent time in the building when it was a Workhouse. He will move to start the

only muted concerns raised about why nothing was being done to redevelop it. Now with a bill for up to 1/2m being faced to make the site safe there is likely to be public uproar, particularly in view of the fact that at a time of scarce resources and health cutbacks, the money has to come from the HSE’s Building Section Capital Fund.

campaign to have the building’s protected status deListed next month at the final meeting of the Co. Council before the elections The saga of the old hospital has gone on for more than twenty years, but amazingly no coherent plan has been proposed to develop it. Despite its Listed status a view was taken at a very early stage that it would not be feasible to develop it for use as a medical facility. However, what has long puzzled the public is how a building which one day was fit for people to have surgery in the Operating Theatres which it housed suddenly became unfit for any purpose as soon as the new hospital opened and the staff closed the doors behind them when they left the old hospital. Over the years as the once landmark building on the outskirts of Wexford town slowly crumbled there were

I was really impressed to see all those people wrapped up against the elements as they attended dawn and early morning masses in Vinegar Hill and Kilmore Quay on Easter Sunday morning. No doubt some people will scoff at the idea but in an age when we understand the concept of everything but the meaning and value of very little, it is wonderful to see people going to the trouble of displaying their faith in this manner. It was the first Easter Sunday for the mass to be celebrated on Vinegar Hill but they have been doing it for the last few years in Kilmore Quay where they were on the quayside at 5.50am to start just as the sun began to rise in the distance. Now that takes real effort.

THAT’S a strange one about the County Senior Hurling Manager and the Head Steward at Wexford Park, Dave Ormond. It seems there was an incident involving the two at a recent game and Ormond says he felt threatened as a result of whatever Dunne said to him. So threatened, it seems that he sent a formal protest to Co. Board. Now the Co. Chairman Diarmuid Devereux is personally investigating the matter. All very unfortunate at a time when Dunne and his charges should be concentrating solely on the upcoming hurling championship.

WALSH PADDY’S LIGHT BULBS A COSTLY SELFIE A WELCOME BOOST FOR THE MONK FROM TEACHERS

I was reminded of the old jokes about how many people in various professions it takes to change a light bulb when councillors complained last week about the difficulty in having faults

to street lights attended to. Enniscorthy councillor, Paddy Kavanagh, obviously have been spending so much time on the electricity company trying to have a

light fixed in Enniscorthy that he could actually recite the number of the pole in question off the top of his head. Now that’s a councillor on top of his game.

Paddy Kavanagh

SPARE a thought for the poor Tibetan Monk, well come to think of it I don’t know whether he’s poor or not, but anyway, spare a thought for him. He was on a train in the London Underground when he spotted the Mayor, Boris Johnson. He was taken aback, it seems, that the Mayor was so modest he would travel on a train and was really delighted to meet the city’s First Citizen was even more delighted when the Mayor agreed to sit in for a Selfie with him. He was so excited that he bounded off the train at the

next stop--------leaving behind his bag which contained his keys, passport, camera and things like that. But it also contained his laptop which had one thousand pages of rare scripture he had collected from around the world. The keys etc were handed back in but there is no sign of the laptop so needless to say the Monk, Lelung Rinpoche, is no longer excited. Distraught would be a better term to describe his state. I’d say he won’t be rushing up to take a Selfie with the next well known person he sees on a train.

A lot of the publicity around the teacher conferences last week centered around the behaviour of some of the delegates when they were addressed by the Minister for Education, Ruairai Quinn. However, the important thing from Wexford’s point of view was the fact that for the second year in a row the secondary teachers were in Wexford for their annual meeting. It is very rare for a conference to return to the same town for two years in succession so this was really

a great boost for the town as a conference centre. The event itself was staged in White’s Hotel, but I’d imagine that all hotels as well as a fair few of the restaurants, pubs and shops also benefitted from the influx of educators for the few days. The other big bonus about having a teachers’ gathering is that the event attracts a lot of national publicity which in turn is very helpful when local venues are trying to attract further business to the area.

FIVE PER FORTNIGHT DROWN IN IRELAND, MAY BANK HOLIDAY INCREASES RISK SO KNOW YOUR LIMITS THERE are 140 drownings in Ireland every year – that’s more than five per fortnight. As we approach the May Bank Holiday weekend, water safety should be prioritised by anyone coming close to coastline or inland waterways and when pursuing water-based or waterside activities to avoid the dangers of cold shock, hypothermia and drowning. There are many reasons people drown yet on Bank Holiday weekends, people often become complacent and put themselves and their families in situations that result in injury or loss of life. People have a responsibility to themselves and family to stay safe around water by

knowing the dangers and learning from the situations that have led to tragic drownings in the past: Always wear a Lifejacket when on water and ensure that it has a correctly fitted crotch strap. Shore walkers should stay away from the edge and beach walkers should remain vigilant to the dangers of being stranded. Ensure that you are fully trained and competent for your aquatic activity. Be mindful of the safety of family and friends, especially children. Children are naturally curious about water and constant supervision is the safest way to avoid tragedy. Parents of

primary school children should check if their local school has yet introduced Irish Water Safety’s PAWS programme – Primary Aquatics Water Safety, which teaches children all about staying safe around water. The program is now a component part of the physical education strand of the primary school curriculum and is key to reducing child drowning mortalities and injuries. Now is the time to instill good habits in time for the summer months ahead. Anglers should be extremely vigilant when fishing from the shoreline of Atlantic swells. Swimmers should swim

parallel and close to the shore. Alcohol should be avoided before or during any aquatic activity. On average, a third of drowning victims had consumed alcohol therefore it is best left until after your activity to celebrate. In emergency situations, never hesitate to call 112. Irish Water Safety encourages everyone to take swimming, lifesaving, survival and rescue classes for further information click on www.iws.ie. If you locate missing Ringbuoys then log on to www.ringbuoys.ie to report them as “a stolen ringbuoy could lead to a stolen life” in an emergency.

DRIVE SAFE THIS LONG BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND AN Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority urge motorists to slow down this May Bank Holiday weekend Nearly 45,000 fixed charged notices were issued for speeding January –March this year, an increase of 16% compared to 2013 figures 91% of drivers detected travelling 10 km/h or more above the speed limit including 11% for speeds in excess of 30 km/h above the speed limit 50km/h zones worst for speeding offences. Excessive or inappropriate speed remains a significant contributory factor in road traffic collisions. As new figures show that nearly 45,000* fixed charge notices have been issued for speeding from January to March this year, an increase of 16.8% compared to the first 3 months of 2013 (44,753 v 38,313). While the majority of drivers and riders drive safely and within applicable speed limits, there are however many who do not. From 1st January -31st March this year, provisional

figures indicate that a total of 44,753* fixed charge notices were issued for speeding. On examination, the following results were found:9% of detections were made between 1 – 9 km/h above the posted speed limit 80% were made between 10 and 29 km/h above the posted speed limit 11% of detections were for speeds in excess of 30 km/h above the limit 50km/ zones worst for speeding offences. “To date in 2014 we have detected drivers travelling at two and almost three times the posted speed limit, on roads which you and I share. The damage caused in the event of a collision in these circumstances is immense, and most likely fatal. Please recognise this fact before it’s too late. Excessive or inappropriate speed causes devastation on our roadsthere is no other way to put it. This high risk behaviour will continue to be intensively targeted and needs to change”

HOT ! RITA ORA Hot! Rita Ora There’s probably no need for an explanation, because, well it’s Rita Ora, but she’s even hotter this week than usual. The British!Albanian singer appeared on “The Breakfast Club” radio show to promote “50 Shades of Grey” the film, in which she will have a leading role. 23 year old Rita ended up lashing out against radio DJ host Charlamagne after he asked her whether or not she was having an a"air with her boss Jay!Z. Rita Ora, who is dating international DJ Calvin Harris, answered with “Don’t you dare disrespect Beyoncé like that” and told him that he “should know better”. He changed the subject and she carried on looking mint!

NOT ! DJ CHARLAMAGNE Firstly because of his name, which is ridiculous to begin with, but mainly because of the whole Rita Ora thing. Adam

What’s Hot, What’s Not, Who’s Hot, Where To Avoid, Who’s Celebrating, Eoin Healy Eoin

THE CHOSEN ONE Manchester United have always been a team known to win trophies each season and winning a major one would be a minimal requirement each year. They had Sir Alex Ferguson in charge, who was arguably the best manager in the history of English football. Ferguson bowed out winning yet another Premier League title, making it his 13th in total. The retirement of Sir Alex happened at the end of last season. Who could possibly replace such a manager? In steps ‘The Chosen One’ David Moyes who had won a staggering 1 major trophy before taking the reins at Manchester United. During the summer, Moyes was given money to spend, so, he spent just under £30Million on the Belgian powerhouse Marouane Fellaini to link up with the English international superstar Tom Cleverly. After 11 defeats in just the Premiership alone, it was enough to see Moyes’ short reign in charge come to an end. During his time as manager, MoyesOut would trend on Twitter after each defeat from the plastic fans that support the club. He did, however, break numerous records while managing the club, here’s just a few: • • • • • • •

United will finish the season with their lowest ever Premiership points tally A Utd side has failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1995 It’s the club’s worst home league form for over a decade First ever home defeat to Swansea Eliminated in the FA Cup third round – this happened just once under Sir Alex Ferguson First time United conceded a first-minute goal in the Premier League First time City & Liverpool have beaten the Red Devils home & away since Premier League’s inception (1992)

Under Moyes, United lacked everything needed to be champions, he clearly hasn’t got the ability to manage a club as big as United. In steps ‘the class of 92’ led by none other than the brother’s wife snatcher himself Ryan Giggs , Giggs and his staff have been put in charge until end of the season and promised to bring back the smiles to old Trafford and got off to a wonderful start by hammering Norwich 4-0 -Eoin

RANT OF THE WEEK

People who post their dirty laundry on Facebook! No one cares. There’s a time and a place for things to be said, and Facebook isn’t the place for you to complain about your “Baby Daddy”. Seriously though, after about a million statuses do you not think people start to realise that YOU’RE actually the problem and YOU’RE the reason 14 different people broke up with you in the last 2 days? Well, they do, and they’d probably be right in assuming that. Really, no one cares that you’re fighting with your “best friend”, so just leave it out! Grrrr! Don’t get me wrong, it’s your page and you can post what you like, but when it’s every single day of the week, it annoys people! So, just stop, or buy yourself a diary, either way, leave it off Facebook. Adam

Status of The Week Heres a wonderful status from Wexford’s very own Stuart Lawlor: “People better get a grip now with their statuses on all the soaps! Me personally, don't watch any of them, but some people's lives are entwined in them. They put up a status like, "Oh max you’re in trouble" and "Oh, I can't believe he did that!" Recently it's all been “Home and Away” all over Facebook. Who the hell is this "Brax" guy? ‘Cause I swear if I meet him I will ask him what his problem is!” Ah boy Stuuy! Eoin

I Can’t Believe You’re Not a Butter! On May 3rd from 10:30-12 the only senior football team in Wexford town, ‘Sarsfields’, are having an open day to attract new young members, both boys and girls, to join the club. All the kids will get to see their fantastic facillities and get to meet senior players and coaches to get the feel of what the club is all about. They’re recruiting new young players for the club so come along and sign up #UpDaButters Eoin

SNAPCHAT OF THE WEEK Last week adam chose Charlee Somers’ Pikachu selfie so it’s my turn to chose this week and I couldnt pass this snap without sharing it with everyone . I received this Sunday morning. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the everappropriate Alan Murphy! -Eoin

ASK ALAN

Wexford Agony Uncle

I’VE BEEN SACKED, BUT COULD I GET A JOB FROM A TD Dear Alan, I wrote to you a couple of weeks ago and I am very sorry for pestering you again so soon. But Alan my worst fears have been confirmed and I am not out of a job. I knew I had my fears and things weren’t going well but still it came as a shock when IK got the boot. I don’t know what to do now, I am all confused. I have been reading the papers, the really the only way I know what's going on. Some of them are saying I will get millions but others said there was something in my contract which means I will get nothing. ‘He’s on the dole’, that’s what one paper said. I don’t know where I am. Really Alan I am as confused about this as I have been all season. I don’t know whether I ‘m coming or going, a bit like the players in most of the games I managed them in. Well I now I’m going, well gone, but you know what I mean I am all confused. I don’t even know how much the dole is, Alan, or how would I go about getting it. I went to a pub the other morning when all this news came out and over a few pints I go t talking to this fella and he said I should move away for a while. He suggested I go to Ireland where he said the dole was much better than in England. He even said that I could work a bit and girt the dole as well, some kind of bridge to a job, or something like that But here’s the great one. He told me there was some guy in the Irish parliament could owned a football club, you know a bit like the Russians and the Americans over here, and he thought he’d give me a job, just for the publicity. I’m a bit confused because he said the team was called ‘Youth’s, they are in the South East apparently. So I thought he was talking about a kids team and I said that would be a step too low, but no seemingly they are just called ‘Youths’ but they are jot kids, it’s a real team of adults. So Alan he gave me the name of this guy, he said he’s a TD, whatever that means. And he said I should contact him as soon as possible. Seemingly he’s very well known in Ireland and he loves football. This guy told me he loves football so much that he never takes off his football shirt. Now this fella said he even wears his football shirt when he is in the Irish House

of Commons, but he did have a good few drinks at the time, so that’s probably not true, it seemed a little far-fetched to me at any rate. However, he said this guy would jump at the chance of giving me a start in his soccer club because it would attract a lot of publicity and seemingly he loves publicity. Now Alan I am a bit desperate but this guy seems a big chancy to me. After all what sort of an oddball would go around wearing a football shirt all the time? What do you think? Before I go, the last time I wrote to you mentioned about Job Bridge or something and said a TD might be able to sort me out. Would the guy with the football club sort this for me as well, or would you have another name. Thanks.

SIMPLE FOOD FOR SIMPLE PEOPLE With Delicious Kevvi and Strawberry Mary WELL hello again. I hope you all enjoyed the Easter break, we certainly did. Strawberry and I were down in Carne for the whole holiday, staying in a caravan, well a sort of mobile home really, but we’d call it a caravan. I know you are wondering what on earth we were doing in a caravan for the break. Well we haven’t lost it completely. Actually we were taking part in a new reality TV show about cooking on holiday. The idea was we’d only have a single ring gas cooker to prepare all our meals and the food itself could only be what we could purchase in a 5km radius of the caravan. So we had to show what you could do with ready meals and the like. You know the kind of thing, struggling with two saucepans, not enough

heat to cook everything and general confusion. Then one of us would lose our temper and bang everything around the place, just to add a big of atmosphere to the TV show. I’m sure you are familiar with the scene; all the shows are the same really. The cameras would capture us sitting down to our creations with a bottle of cheap win as we celebrated the achievement of being able to create something away from our sophisticated kitchens. As soon as the camera stopped rolling we’d be off out of the caravan in a flash. We usually headed for a little pub up the road. It was an amazing place really, particularly given where it is located. We thought it would be some sort of backwoods little country pub. But do you know what, it was amazing.

I have to admit the food was out of this world, Strawberry even suggested it was as good as anything we’d cook ourselves. Unbelievable really. Well I tell you once we found it we were out of that caravan every day as soon as the cameras stopped and up the road to the pub to sip the finest of wines and enjoy some very fine food-------they had fantastic fish. Oh yea we had a good Easter after all and we were paid a fortune for the TV show as well. Well as you can imagine with all the filming and the time we spent in the pub we didn’t have time to put together the next steps for frying an egg so we’ll do that next week. See you then. By the way that good pub in Carne is called The Lobster something or other, check it out.

David, Manchester. Dear David, I am very sorry to hear that you got the sack, although as I said in my replay last time you were on a hiding to nothing once you got lifted into the job by the ‘Sir’ fellow. That guy you met in the pub was well informed. There is such a man around here, in fact I happen to know him and I am certain that he would be very anxious to take you on. It wouldn’t be a great job, but it would have its advantages. For one thing you won’t have anyone flying planes over the ground with messages of abuse about you and you won’t have to answer any questions for nasty TV types either. On the downside don’t expect to get paid millions for doing the job. On the other question I don’t know whether or not you’d qualify for the Job Bridge but I am forwarding you the contact details for a guy called Brendan Howlin. He’s a big noise around here and if there’s any way of getting you onto the scheme he’s the man to do it and you won’t have to pay him or anything. In fact I should warn you not to bring him any gifts, particularly if they are in envelopes or brown paper bags. If you do he’ll probably show you the door and do nothing for you. Good luck with everything. Alan

WEEK 2 APPLYING FOR JOBS/JOB SEARCHING – STEPS TO SUCCESS In the current market, finding a job is like a job in itself. Every Employer wants and needs to fill their vacancies with the best possible applicants. We hope the following guidelines we have set out will allow you to take a step closer in the right direction and become successful with finding you your ideal job and a career that you will love and most of all enjoy. •

The key to success is by being very proactive i.e. allocating two hours each morning and two hours in the evening time to job search

Where to search: on-line job websites e.g. RecruitIreland.com, Irishjobs.ie, Jobrapido.com and not forgetting my own website http://www.gemmahayesrecruit ment.ie . Ensure to register your CV with as many Recruitment Agencies as possible, search weekly Newspapers, search LinkedIn (every job seeker should have a LinkedIn profile) and also by speculatively sending your CV to prospective Employers, stating your interest in joining their organisation, offering your services for free-of-charge for a couple of weeks if necessary, to allow you to prove yourself to the company

Ensure you tweak your CV towards each specific role you are applying for and if speculatively applying to a company, utilise your generic CV

It is imperative to follow-up on each and every application you submit, either via telephone contact or written correspondence

We believe that by following the above steps, you will prove successful in finding your dream job. Should you require any assistance or advice with job seeking,

Gemma Hayes Recruitment would be delighted to assist you. Please contact us at any time on 0863387077 and we will assure you the best of our attention at all times.

Audi A3 is named 2014 World Car of the Year THE Audi A3, the premium compact bestseller from the brand with the four rings, is the 2014 World Car of the Year. This is the second overall title for Audi in the ten year history of the World Car of the Year Awards as the Audi A6 won the inaugural overall title in 2005. The third generation of the Audi A3 is now officially confirmed as a world beater. It overcame the challenge from 23 other cars to win the prestigious World Car of the Year title in 2014. The A3 was voted as the winner by an international jury panel comprising 69 top-level automotive journalists from 22 countries around the world. Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, said: “The Audi A6* was the first ever winner of this award and we are delighted that the Audi A3 has repeated that achievement by being voted 2014 World Car of the Year. The Audi A3 showcases Audi’s technical competence in all aspects of car making, not least in the areas of lightweight technology, drivetrain, mobile infotainment and driver assistance systems. This major award win is an

achievement that the whole company can celebrate”. The new Audi A3 is available as a 3 door*, Sportback*, Cabriolet* and Sedan*. It is powered by a range of TFSI gasoline and TDI diesel engines. The A3 Sportback can also be ordered as a g-tron*, which can be operated using e-gas generated by Audi, natural gas, or gasoline – when powered by e-gas, the A3 Sportback g-tron travels CO2-neutral. Later this year, the A3 Sportback will also be available as an etron*, whose plug-in hybrid drive enables journeys of up to 50 kilometres in all-electric mode. Audi is offering customers in Germany green electricity – Audi energy. The cooperating partner is the Hamburg energy provider

LichtBlick E. The power all comes from renewable energy sources and is generated exclusively at hydro-electric power stations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. With Audi energy, the A3 e-tron is totally emissionfree when operated electrically. Audi can look back on a 16-year success story with the A3. In 1996, the first generation of the model series established an entirely new market segment – the premium compact class. With the second generation, which followed in 2003, the brand extended its lead

Cabriolet to the familiar 3 door and Sportback body styles. The third A3 generation is available in four body styles following the further addition of the Sedan. With this win for the Audi A3, Audi has maintained its position as the manufacturer with the most World Car of the Year titles. The brand with the four rings has previously won three World Performance Car titles, two World Car Design of the Year titles and the inaugural World Car of the Year title. In total Audi has won seven titles at the World Car of the Year Awards.

SPORT

LARRY O’GORMAN The man who gets Behind the Sports Headlines I’M BACKING TIPP TO LAND THE LEAGUE TITLE AT THE EXPENSES OF THE CATS THE summer is nearly upon us. No I’m not talking about the good weather or the bright evenings. Hurling fans do not measure the seasons by things like that. No they look at the progress of the league and then look forward to the championship and as the league ends and the championship beckons they know that summer is on the way. It doesn’t guarantee fine weather, mind you, but who needs fine weather when you have great hurling to enjoy. The league final marks a real move from one season to another and Sunday, therefore, signals the end of winter and opens the gate on summer hurling. But before we all look forward to a great summer of hurling we have the prospect of a tremendous game on Sunday. I think it will be a cracker.

Yes a real cracker. Why? Well I’ll tell you why. You have two teams here with great tradition, great passion and two neighbours who like to brag about what they have achieved and what they really think of each other. And these two sides have plenty to brag about. Kilkenny have already won sixteen league titles, while Tipperary, believe it or not, have actually won nineteen. This encounter on Sunday should be a game to remember then because quite simply Kilkenny hate to see Tipperary winning anything and Tipperary feel exactly the same about the Cats. So they will each do their living best to cut down the other. The last time the two sides met was just a couple of months ago. When they faced up to each other at Nowlan

Park it was some game. Tipperary came out that day with fire in their eyes and looked as if they were going to humiliate the Kilkenny men in their own backyard. They were dominant in the opening half and it looked as if Kilkenny were in real trouble. But how often have you seen it. Yes Kilkenny looking down and out and the next thing you see is a transformed team taking the field after the restart. That game ended 5.20 to 5.14 to Kilkenny. What a score that was and anything like that again and we really would have a great league final. And there is no reason why we can’t expect just as entertaining a match next Sunday. Fair enough the score mightn’t be quite as high but these are really

skilful teams and they have settled down a lot over the last couple of months. If anything I’d say Tipperary might have improved the most from having a settled team. There really was a lot to like about their win in the semi-final when they brushed aside the Clare challenge. Equally Kilkenny now have a much more settled side and you get the impression that this is not just a team looking for a league final win; this is the team that is determined to get back on top in the championship as well. So there is a lot at stake on Sunday because whoever wins will have a certain little advantage come the championship, even if it only is a confidence boost and that can be knocked out of you as soon as it is picked up. But you have two strong

physical teams here and it will certainly be a fast moving game with no place for the faint hearted, that’s for sure. Yes if you are the nervous type this might not be ideal viewing for you, but if you fancy a great game of hurling then I think you’ll need to look no further. I don’t think you are going to see a repeat of all the goals that were scored in the game in February. The defences will be on thire guard on Sunday so scores will be much harder to come by than on the last occasion. Yes I do think it will be a very close game and it could go either way, but I am not here to sit on the fence. The fence is not a comfortable placd to sit (I much prefer a barstool myself), so I am not going to hedge my bets.

I think Tipperary will win. Why? Well first of all the fact that the match is being played in Semple Stadium is a big boost for them. The benefit of home turf and the home crowd cannot be underestimated. Yes I think we are in for a treat on Sunday. An afternoon of nail biting, edge of the seat action. There’ll be crying, shouting, screaming, abuse of the ref and everything else which is why hurling has no equal in terms of passion and satisfaction, even for the spectator. So sit back and enjoy and expect to see the cup going to Tipperary at the end of the afternoon. The throw-in, by the way is at 3.30, so there’s no problem if you stay out late on Saturday night, you should still be in good shape by the time it starts.

I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE LOCAL CHAMPIONSHIPS THAT’S ALL FOR NOW WHATEVER about the All-Ireland championship, and that is just around the corner, the local championship is also nearly upon us and the excitement is really beginning to build around the county.

WELL Brother that’s all for now and I do really hope that next week I’ll be reviewing a Tipperary victory. No it has nothing to do with not likening Kilkenny, but I’ve tipped Tipp and I really don’t want to be going around for another week with fellas

saying ‘Ah brother what happened Tipp’. In fact if I get another selection wrong Paddy Power or Boyles Sports will probably start offering enhanced odds on my tips. See you next week Brother.

JIM MCGOVERN’S

GAELIC FOOTBALL ROUND UP SOME SURPRISES IN SECOND ROUND OF SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP THE second round of the football championship commenced last Friday evening with a double header in Taghmon. First up was the meeting of Starlights and Adamstown at 7pm. Both teams had lost their first round games so a win here was going to be very important. It went to the Enniscorthy side on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-13 but it must be said that Adamstown turned in a greatly improved performance fighting to the very end and could be

considered unlucky not to have got something from the game. This game was followed by the meeting of St Martin’s and Gusserane. This game featured some excellent passages of football with the New Ross District side really putting it up to the county champions, having led by 1-5 to 0-3 at one stage during the first half. St Martin’s were the more dominant team for the first half of the second period but Gusserane hung in there with the game resulting in an

exciting draw-2-9 each. It was on to Bellefield on Sunday to see St Fintan’s and Kilanerin open the programme. This game featured the first real surprise of the championship when the men from the south of the county had an exciting one point win (1-11-to 0-13). Kilanerin will rue a penalty miss late in the second half but overall St Fintan’s were the better team, with Barry Brennan being an ideal targetman for them at full forward and Donal Shanley

again exhibiting great free taking skills. The game that followed, featuring Castletown and Sarsfields, was quite one sided with the issue effectively being decided by the interval when the north county men led by 39 to 1-1. Sarsfields did improve in the second half but, overall, had no answer to the power and pace of their opponents who eventually ran out winners by 3-13 to 1-7. It was straight into the car to head for Grantstown to see another double bill. First onto

WHEN ARE KILKENNY GOING TO START TAKING FOOTBALL SERIOUSLY? THIS question came to mind when I recently heard the following result from the Leinster minor football championship: Offaly 7-30, Kilkenny 0-2. It was not the first heavy defeat our neighbours have suffered in this grade with Wexford, for example, having a very facile victory over them by 7-17 to 00 in 2011. Each year there are fine young footballers from Kilkenny on virtually every

DISTRIBUTING

Good Counsel team but their football education would appear to come to an end when they leave the school. This is hardly very fair and surely it is something the GAA should investigate. I don’t think anyone is asking that Kilkenny should put less into hurling, just that they should put a lot more into football and give those who have a preference for the big ball game a genuine chance. I believe that Kilkenny’s poor

FREE

treatment of football creates tensions in this county with a prevailing feeling among some at least that we should copy the Kilkenny example in relation to football. But we have two major field games and we in Wexford make a decent effort to promote both. We probably fall between two stools in trying to do so and, as a result, are not as successful as we could be at inter county level. But I believe the GAA could

15,000 COPIES EVERY WEEK

Chronicle !"

THE NEW VOICE IN COUNTY WEXFORD

do a lot to help us by having two separate seasons for hurling and football with the all Ireland hurling final being played in July, and its counterpart in football being played in August for example. We could then utilise our dual players, of which we have probably more than any other county, to the best possible effect and be more successful as a result.

the stage were Fethard and Horeswood at 5.30pm. Many favoured the former in this game after their very impressive first round win over Kilanerin but the county champions of 2011 refused to read the script and had a really impressive 1-18 to 0-14 victory. This was real end to end entertainment with many of the scores recorded being of the very highest quality not least the game clinching goal from the lethal left foot of David Shannon. On the basis of this very impressive display

rumours of Horeswood’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Next on stage was the meeting of St Anne’s and Shelmaliers. This was a really exciting contest all the way through with the Rathangan men eventually edging it on by a single point (0-14 to 0-13). It was a game that had virtually everything including some excellent scores and superb high fielding. There is no doubt that these two teams will have a major say in the destination of this year’s title.

FRIDAY NIGHT GAMES A SUCCESS BUT......... THERE is no doubt that playing club championship games on Friday nights has been a success and has brought out the crowds but perhaps one game with an 8pm start is enough, given the distances that some players have to travel. It can be extremely difficult for a player to travel from Cork or Dublin for a 7pm start and be physically and mentally ready for that game. He may have to get off work early which can be difficult in the current economic climate or he may have to endure traffic jams which certainly would not help his preparations for a game that

he has trained hard for over several months. It is unreasonable to expect him to have sat in or driven a car for up to two and a half hours, arrive perhaps thirty or forty minutes before the game and then be able to give of his best. Players like to prepare properly for games and they are entitled to do so but the above scenario definitely militates against good preparation. Nevertheless I hope Friday night games continue as they can free up the weekend for players and spectators alike but I believe just one game on the night would be better.
