WILL €100,000 LEVY PLAN HALT PYLONS ? A last ditch effort is to be made by Wexford’s outgoing councillors to put a financial block in the way of EirGrid’s proposals to run a line of pylons through the heart of the county. This week councillors insisted that a decision on a planned levy on each pylon to be erected in the county be moved forward to early next month

to enable the existing Council to take the decision before the local elections. The pylons have been a hot issue in communities across the county for months and it was revealed this week that EirGrid had not yet responded to a detailed submission made by councillors several months ago.

However, councillors are now pushing for the project to be hit with a financial sting at planning stage and a meeting of the Council’s planning committee is to be moved forward to the beginning of May to enable the proposal to be formalised ahead of the May meeting of the full Council.. Shock at deaths of Jimmy Doyle and Jimmy Holohan COMMUNITIES in Enniscorthy and Rathnure are in shock this week following the unexpected passing of two men, one in his 50s and the other in his early 20s. The death on Friday morning of James (Jimmy) Doyle, Tomnalossett, Enniscorthy, evoked feelings of deep sadness and distress throughout Enniscorthy town and district, while the death on Sunday morning of James (Jimmy) Holohan, Rathnure Upper, was heard with dismay and sadness in equal measure also. James (Jimmy) Doyle was found dead at his home early on Friday morning and news

of his unexpected passing cast a pall of gloom over the entire Enniscorthy area. He had been in his usual good form in the hours prior to his passing and on Thursday night had engaged in a card game with friends in Enniscorthy Golf Club where he was a highly popular member. With his brothers, Ger and Shane, the late Mr. Doyle conducted a thriving butchery business in Enniscorthy’s Court Street and was deeply involved in al aspects of the town’s social and commercial life. He was Chairman of the Enniscorthy Business Association, an

active member of the Chamber of Commerce, a dedicated supporter of the Ferns Diocesan Lourdes Pilgrimage Trust and an associate member of practically every worthwhile organisation working in Enniscorthy for the betterment of the town. He survived by his wife, Connie, daughters, Karen, Laura and Lish brothers, Warren, Gerard and Shane, sisters Nuala, Claire and Anne and by a huge circle of close relatives and an equally large circle of friends. Mr. Doyle was laid to rest in Enniscorthy’s new cemetery following Requiem Mass in

St. Aidan’s Cathedral on Monday, during which the commercial life of Enniscorthy came to a virtual standstill as a mark of respect to a much loved and highly respected businessman. News of the sudden death on Sunday morning of James (Jimmy) Holohan, Rathnure Upper, was also heard with feelings of deep regret and shock, not only in his native Rathnure, but throughout the county where the Holohan family are well known in both sporting and business circles. 23 year old Mr. Holohan was enjoying a night out with friends when he collapsed and died outside a landmark

licensed premises in Ballywilliam, New Ross. Like the late Mr. Doyle, he had been in excellent health prior to his unexpected passing and the manner of his death, while out with friends, has sent shockwaves throughout the close knit Rathnure community. Only son of former Wexford hurling great, Jimmy Holohan and his wife, Kathleen, a member of the teaching staff of Clonroche National School, the dead man was an active member of St. Anne’s G.A.A. Club in Rathnure and lined out regularly with club teams in various championship and

league fixtures. He was also involved in a variety of parish related activities and his passing at such a young age is keenly felt by the many people he came in contact with during his all too short life. Mr. Holohan was laid to rest on Tuesday following Requiem Mass in the local Parish Church. The esteem in which his family are held and the sadness occasioned by his unexpected passing was reflected in the huge attendance at his funeral Mass which was one of the largest ever seen in Rathnure.

MINISTER OPENS NEW FAMILY SUPPORT CENTRE

Jim Gibson A new Family Support Service has been opened in Enniscorthy to provide information, advice and support to children and young people, families and teenage parents in the North Wexford area including Enniscorthy, Bunclody and Gorey. The Barnardos Family Support Service at Castle Hill, Enniscorthy, was officially opened on Monday by Mr. Brendan Howlin, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform in the presence of Barnardos Chief Executive, Mr. Fergus Finlay, and Mr. Jim Gibson of the Child and Family Agency Tusla. Speaking at the official opening, Mr. Howlin said he was delighted to see Barnardos investing in young peoplein the North Wexford areaand to see services, such as will be provided from the office in Enniscorthy, being made available to a much

wider audience. He commented on the friendly atmosphere in the new centre and said he was satisfied it will provide a safety and welcoming space for children and their families. Barnardos Chief Executive Fergus Finlay said his organisation has been working with families in Wexford since 2002 and he was delighted to be in Enniscorthy with the funders of the service, Tusla, to celebrateBarnardos continued commitment to families in the county. This new building “is a warm and welcoming space which has been developed with the needs of children and families in mind”, he said, before adding “I’m satisfied this new development will provide the necessary structures to meet the demands and requirements of all its users”. Marian Dowd, Project Leader of Barnardos in

Enniscorthy, remarked that since moving to Enniscorthy almost a year ago, her organisation had worked with some 89 families and over 185 children and young people as well as 25 teen parents and their children. One of the main reasons for locating in Enniscorthy, she added, was Barnardos desire to create a welcoming space for children and their families in a building reconstructed to meet their every need. Many of the families using the new facility, according to Ms. Dowd, are endeavouring to deal with difficulties such as bereavement, parental separation, bullying, addiction, relationship and behavioral problems and poor mental health. The parents of such children want what’s best for their children, she said, and it was the job of Barnardos new team in Enniscorthy to support them with their parenting and to make it happen. Barnardos provides a range of supports for families living in the North Wexford area including information and advice, parenting support and individual work with children and young people and parents. The service also provides a Teen Parent Support Programme with information and advice on ante natal care, parental rights and entitlements continuing education, parenting and self care. The new service is open during normal working hours and is available to all who may require it.

ROSS BID TO GRAB ENNISCORTHY ROADS’ CASH NEW Ross District councillors want to ‘steal’ road repair cash from the Enniscorthy area to pay for repairs to roads which have moved into their electoral area as a result of boundary changes. But angry councillors from Enniscorthy issued a firm ‘hands off our cash’ message to their New Ross colleagues at Monday’s Council meeting. The issue arose because a number of rural areas including Rathnure, Killane, Taghmon and Camross are moving into New Ross and Cllr .Denis Kennedy said many of the roads he had encountered around Rathnure were in a terrible state. But he warned that New Ross councillors would not have the money to do the work unless cash was transferred from Ennisocrthy. But Cllr. Paddy Kavanagh said new areas were coming into the

Enniscorthy District as well and there would be no spare cash to transfer. Cllr Kathleen Codd Nolan said Cllr Kennedy’s assessment of the situation in Rathnure was proof of what she had been saying for ten years. Additional funds needed to be spent in the area. But Cllr. Malcolm Byrne said that at least in these areas they had roads, in some parts of the Gorey District the road surfaces had completely disappeared. But Director of Services Eamon Hore said the roads money was allocated between the various districts on the basis of the exact amount of roadways they had to look after. However, there was one happy councillor at the meeting. Oliver Walsh welcomed the work currently taking place in Ballymurn village.

HOME FROM 'DOWN UNDER' FOR BARNTOWN WEDDING

The bridal party pictured in Barntown Church on Friday after the wedding of Elizabeth Cash from Wexford town andSean O'Leary from Barntown. The couple returned from Perth, Australia to celebrate their big day with family and friends in Wexford.

KAVANAGH PRAISES NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ON TRAVELLERS JOURNALIST Brenda Power’s compelling article in last Tuesday’s Irish Daily Mail, though criticised by many, has won warm praise from Wexford County Council member Paddy Kavanagh from Enniscorthy. Under the banner heading “If Travellers want ethnic status, they ought to get rid of those slash hooks and settle” Ms Power seriously questioned why travellers should be given ethnic status at the expense of the taxpayer, saying she didn’t accept they are a separate ethnic group, no more than small farmers, blacksmiths or postmasters. Her sentiments, as expressed in the article, has opened up, once again, the long-running debate on traveller rights, something Councillor Paddy Kavanagh from Drumgoold,, Enniscorthy, has debated at length on both the national and local airwaves, as well as in the print media since entering public life 15 years ago. He is appalled at the behaviour of certain Travellers, many of whom are living in the Enniscorthy area, and says their antics is making life a ‘living hell’,

particularly for the people of Greater Drumgoold. And, like Ms. Power, Councillor Kavanagh is also anxious to know how Travellers fund their present way of life, their fancy trailers, big houses, extravagant weddings and brand new top-of-the-range 4x4 whicles. For far to long, he says, the authorities have turned a ‘blind eye’ to what is going on in the Traveller community and this, in turn, has led to them engaging in ‘ethnic-cleansing’ in parts of Enniscorthy such as Drumgoold Villas, where they now occupy more than 50% of the houses. Strongly opposing any form of ethnic status for the Travelling community, Councillor Kavanagh points out their lifestyle is not conducive to gainful employment or to contributing to society in the form of paying taxes. They already have the same political and civil rights as every other citizen under the Constitution, he says, so there is absolutely no need for them to be granted ethnic status to protect and preserve

their ‘culture’, a culture Councillor Kavanagh says no longer exists. And in a broadside against public officials, Councillor Kavanagh says the time has come when all public representatives must stand together and demand an end to fueds, intimidation, antisocial behaviour, illegal trading and other activities Travellers regulary engage in. So far, he says, there appears to be a strong reluctance on the part of officials to tackle the Traveller problem which, according to Councillor Kavanagh, exists in almost every town in County Wexford and elsewhere. Giving their behaviour in the greater Drumgoold area as an example, Councillor Kavanagh exprsses the view that no other sector would be allowed engage in such activities and not be held responsible. To him it appears to be a case of one law for the Traveller and one law for the rest of society. This is completely wrong, he says, and before any consideration is given to according Travellers ethnic

status, these issues must be addressed and dealt with. And the Fine Gael public representative who is seeking re-election to Wexford County Council in next month’s local elections has also taken issue with certain media outlets who throughout the week claimed no public representative was available for comment on Ms. Power’s article.”My views on this issue are well known as I have debated them on both radio and television on several occasions. Yet I was not asked to comment even though I would willingly have done so”, he says. Councillor Kavanagh goes on to say “If Travellers are genuine about wanting ethnic status for their community they should stop travelling, stop fueding, settle down in one of the houses so willingly provided by the various local authorities, send their children to school and teach them to be good law abiding citizens in society. Then, maybe them, ethnic status could be considered but not before”..

OLD REMEDIES NO ANSWER FOR MODERN BULLYING OLD fashioned ways of dealing with school yard bullies would not work in the modern environment, Co Councillors were told at a meeting on Monday after some of them recalled how they dealt with bullies in their younger days by giving them a good kicking. Four representatives of Comhairle Na NOg made a detailed presentation to the April meeting of the Council on the whole area of cyber bullying and how it affects young people. And during exchanges with councillors afterwards the generation gap between the two sides became apparent with Cllr Declan McPartlin urging direct action to deal with the problem. He recalled that in his day you gave a bully a kick in the ‘you know what’s’ and dealt with him that way.

Cllr Padge Reck said that when he was in his youth in Harvey’s field bullies were given a good hiding and that sorted them out. But the Comhairle representatives pointed out that one of the big problems with cyber bullying was that it was often anonymous. Cllr John Hegarty said in his experience most bullying nowadays was not in the schoolyard but through social media. Cllr George Lawlor was told that schools did what they could to deal with the problem, but a difficulty was that much of the problems arose outside school hours. Cllr Anna Fenlon said bullies were cowards and the best way to deal with them was to educate children from a young age on the damage caused by bullying.

RESIDENTS MAY BE ABLE TO KICK OUT MANAGEMENT COMPANIES RESIDENTS of housing estates who are successful in having their estates taken over by Wexford Co. Council can wave goodbye to their management companies who will no longer serve any practical purpose, it emerged this week. However, members of Wexford Co. Council heard that despite the fact that Management Companies would not be required to deal with the local authority the legal position in some developments could result in residents having to continue with the much hated operators. The activities of management companies have caused problems in several parts of the county, but most especially in Gorey where there was a huge amount of development during the boom years. Cllr George Lawlor said residents should be advised that as far as the local authority was concerned they no longer needed management companies once their estate was taken in charge. But Cllr Malcolm Byrne said in some cases they might

have a difficultly extracting themselves from legal agreements which were entered into when they purchased the properties. But a suggestion that a guide book on the issue should be sent out by the Council was rejected as not a good idea by the top table. Cllr Robbie Ireton said he had been dealing with the problems caused by management committees for years and he questioned the evidence which some of these companies gave in court cases. But Cllr Padge Reck warned residents about any rush to completely discard the idea of any representative group to run their estates. He said properly structured management outfits had their place and he recalled instances where people bought lawn mowers to look after the open spaces in an estate only for it to end up in one house and later be used on a hire basis. He said there was also a problem when some people didn’t pay anything towards the cost of looking after the common areas and open spaces in estates.

Jimmy Gahan’s

‘Views from Vinegar Hill’ 300 SIGN PETITION AGAINST COURTHOUSE PARKING PLAN A proposal to eliminate onstreet parking at the Courthouse in Enniscorthy and to replace it was disabled parking only will be strongly resisted by local residents and business interests. A petition against the proposal is already in circulation with more than 300 people having signed it and this, in time, will be presented to Town Clerk, Dave Minnogue, who is understood to favour the proposal. Court Street residents and business interests are not opposed to disabled parking but they say it should be provided inside the grounds of the Courthouse, thus leaving the limited existing street parking that is available for customers of local businesses, shops and

residents. It is claimed with some justification that business interests in the general area of Court Street have suffered a severe decline in trade due, in part, to the pedestrianisation of nearby Rafter Street and the town’s present one-way traffic system. The loss of another seven parking spaces from this area would be detrimental to local businesses and would, it is claimed, spell the death knell for some. Enniscorthy Town Council intends moving its administrative headquarters from its present location in the Market Square to The Courthouse later this year and it is the view of planning officials that disabled parking should be provided for those

needing to use the services of the Council. There is no argument against this view but where the parking should be provided is the kernal of the crux for all concerned. Local residents and business interests claim there is enough room inside the peremiter of the Courthouse grounds to accommodate staff parking and disabled parking and that the existing spaces outside the grounds should be retained for those wishing to transact business elsewhere in the immediate area. These views, however, are not shared by the members or officials of the Town Council who are adamant that disabled parking must be provided outside the grounds. This can only be done by eliminating the present on-

street parking which exists and as far as those opposed to the plan are concerned this is simply not on. They are buoyed by the response to their petition opposing the plan and spokesperson Annette Byrne, a candidate in the forthcoming Local Government Elections, and the owner of a business interest opposite the Courthouse, said she hoped ‘common’sense’ would prevail and that the Council would see the logic of the locals argument and change the proposal accordingly. The seven parking spaces in question, she said were, in many respects, the’lifeblood’ of trade in Court Street and to remove them would put jobs and businesses at risk. At a

time when Enniscorthy was badly in need of every job it could get, Ms.Byrne said the Council should ‘get real’ and listen to the concerns of the people before deciding to eliminate an essential facility in attracting business to the area. She was all in favour of providing disabled parking in close proximity to the proposed new administrative headquarters of the Council but emphasised that such facilities must not and cannot be provided as the expense of existing ratepayers. “We are already paying far too much in Rates”, she said, “and for the Council to come along and jeopardise the future of existing businesses is incomprehensible” she added. Asked what she and her

business colleagues, along with local residents, would do in the event of the Council failing to entertain their concerns, Ms. Byrne said the first thing to do was to present the petition to the Council and to give the Council time to digest the level of opposition to the move. After that she hoped dialogue would follow and that common sense would prevail. After all she remarked, the local business interests and residents were not asking the Council to drop plans for disabled parking but only to provide such parking inside the grounds of the Courthouse rather than outside it.

ALL THE STARS TURNED OUT FOR ENNISCORTHY RECEPTION THE stars of ‘Brooklyn’ Saoirse Ronan and Donal Gleeson were among guests at a reception in Enniscorthy Castle on Wednesday night last. The reception was hosted by Enniscorthy Town Council and Enniscorthy and District Chamber of Commerce as a ‘Thank You’ to all concerned with the filming of ‘Brooklyn’ which has focused an unexpected spotlight on Enniscorthy and which, hopefully, will generate a new found interest in the town among tourists when the film is released sometime next year. Many were surprised that Saoirse Ronan took time out from her busy work schedule to attend the reception given the fact she declined an invitation to the IFTA Awards ceremony in Dublin just days previously. Donal Gleeson was also a surprise attendee but both thoroughly enjoyed themselves and mingled freely with the invited guests. Casually

dressed and brimming with confidence, both stars chatted with all and sundry and spoke in glowing terms of the friendliness of the Enniscorthy people, which is believed to have influenced their decision to attend the reception. The film’s Director, London based John Crowley and Producer, Finnoula Dwyer, a New Zealander with an Irish mother, also attended the reception with both speaking in glowing terms of the cooperation received during the two weeks of filming in Enniscorthy. Location Manager Gordon Wicherly also attended, as did Town Council Chairman, Johnny Mythen, Minister of State Paul Kehoe, Town Clerk, Dave Minogue, Chamber of Commerce Preident, Michael Bennett along with the members of Enniscorthy Town Council. The author of ‘Brooklyn’ Colm Toibin, a native of Enniscorthy’s Parnell Avenue, was unable to

attend because of work commitments in New York but his sister, Nuala Stack, Bellefield, Enniscorthy, was present and was introduced to the stars and production team. Chamber of Commerce President Michael Bennett and Town Council Chairman Johnny Mythen spoke of their pride and pleasure at how well the people and business community of Enniscorthy had responded to the demands of filming scenes for ‘Brooklyn’ in and around the centre of the town. Each singled out Location Manager Gordon Wicherly for special mention and said his input was second to none. Within the space of less than a month overall, Mr. Wicherly had endeared himself to almost everybody in Enniscorthy and it was the hope of both the Chamber President and Town Council Chairman that he would return in the not to distant future to make another film in

Ennisciorthy. Mr. Wicherly was the recipient of a Pikeman Statuette from Town Clerk Dave Minogue for his efforts in bringing ‘Brooklyn’ to Enniscorthy, while John Crowley, Director, Finnoula Dwyer, Producer, Saoirse Ronan and Nuala Stack were presented with bouquets of flowers. Minister of State Paul Kehoe spoke of the financial contribution the Irish film industry was making to the Irish economy and of the contribution the filming of ‘Brooklyn’ had made to the economy of Enniscorthy over the past number of weeks. He was amazed, he said by the amount of work involved in filming scenes but he was well satisfied, all the effort would prove wortwhile when ‘Brooklyn’ wins an Oscar as he was sure it would.

GER A GREAT AND PROUD TIME FOR THE IRISH IN BRITAIN

ROYAL NONSENSE WHILE Michael D was dining with the Queen her grandson was embarking on his first official visit with a trip to New Zealand, with Mum and Dad, Kate and William. I watched some of the news coverage of the visit-------purely for the purposes of fact finding for this column you understand----------and it’s quite unbelievable really what some of those royal correspondents come out with. There was, for example, a whole discussion about whether or not little George looked tired after the flight and then as he raised his hand to rub his eyes came the comment ‘it’s his first official royal wave’ And then it was on to Kate and the fact that her outfit was such that she could have been mistaken for one of the hostesses on the airline. Personally I thought her outfit was quite fetching and I think the chances of her being mistaken for one of the staff were fairly slim. It wasn’t as if the royal couple were travelling in steerage, after all

PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins’ State visit to the UK was a real triumph and must have been very uplifting for Irish people in Britain. I have visited Windsor on many occasions and everything about it shouts out ‘Royal’. The pictures of an Irish President travelling in style through the streets of that town last week, as Irish flags fluttered in the wind side by side with Union Jacks, was amazing. Such an image would have been unthinkable a couple of decades ago. Indeed, even a few years ago it hardly seemed likely. But whatever joy people on this side of the water experienced from this amazing scene can you imagine how Irish people in Britain must have felt?. You could see the genuine emotion on their faces as they watched the carriage with Michael D. pass by. If you think back to what some of those people faced when they emigrated to England back in the 1950s and 60s you can well imagine why they would have been emotional. They faced a very tough situation, both in terms of the types of employment they

could get and the sort of accommodation which they were forced to take. They were really second class citizens and that continued for many years, made worse during the 1970s when the

now watching their President being carried along in a Royal carriage. And as Enda Kenny rightly pointed out last week the Irish have come a long way in Britain from the time when

IRA bombing campaign resulted in many Irish people being the target of vicious attacks. How far these people had come from the time they couldn’t get a decent place to live and had to settle for the jobs no one else wanted to

the only jobs they could hope to secure were at the lower end of the scale to now sitting in virtually all the major boardrooms in the country. For some, however, all the celebration surrounding the visit was soured by the presence of Martin

McGuinness at the banquet. In particular the father of one of the Omagh bomb victims protested against him dining with the Queen. His anger is understandable and he was right to protest. However, no matter how painful it is for some, we just have to move on and the decision of McGuniness to accept the Queen’s invitation was very significant and illustrates in a very clear way just how far the Republican movement has moved. Yes, of course we must remember the past, and we have to have great sympathy for all those who mourn loved ones lost at the hands of the IRA, but to stay in the past is to deny the future a chance. As you would expect, right wing publications in the UK had a field day at the sight of the ex-IRA commander dining at the Queen’s table but it does indicate just how far all sides in both countries have moved on when such a thing is possible. And on a less serious note don’t the British do ceremonial really well. I’d sit and watch the spectacle of their parades and functions all day.

WITNESSING THE REAL COST OF A ROAD TRAGEDY WHEN you turn on the radio on a weekend morning and hear an announcement about some fatal accident in any part of the country I am sure you are probably like me; you have a bit of an intake of breath, have sympathetic thoughts for those left behind, and then get on with your day. That’s natural. Road death announcements are really just part of our everyday lives and unless there are multiple fatalities we hardly give them a second thought. However, for every single fatality there is a grieving family, parents,

a partner, possible children and brothers and sisters, all heartbroken over their loss. Really the enormity of the loss suffered by a family as a result of a road tragedy doesn’t come home to you unless you visit a wake house or attend the funeral of a victim. Last Wednesday in bright sunshine many hundreds of people gathered in the beautiful grounds of St Alphonsus Church in Barntown to pay their final respects to Paul Kelly, the latest Co. Wexford road victim and to support h is

family. This was a young man cut down in his prime when he died as his car struck a wall 5km from his home the previous Sunday morning. He was a guy who had a deep interest in motor cycles and cars and his pals paid a very fitting tribute to him with more than a dozen motor cycles leading the funeral procession from his home to the Church. These were all young men for whom death is bit a distant thought paying a final tribute to one of their own. Outside the Church

hundreds, many of them young men with their partners had gathered long before the funeral was due to arrive for the mid-day Requiem Mass for the same purpose of saying goodbye. It was an impressive, dignified and appropriate tribute representing the lifestyle of the young man. The floral tributes were appropriate too with one large arrangement simply spelling out the word ‘Spud’ the name by which Paul was known all his life. But for all the impressiveness of the motor

cycle guard of honour or the beautiful sunshine which beamed down on the Church grounds this was an intensely emotional and heartbreaking occasion for Paul’s parents and family. Nothing is more striking, more forceful, and more conclusive than watching the emotion of a bereaved family as they stand at a graveside and watch the burial ceremony. This is the image which brings home to you the fact that all road tragedies or more than just a statistic, more than just a mention on a

newscast, more than a few paragraphs in a newspaper,r they are about real people, real heartbreak and the real shattering of lives and family units. It is probably too much to ask that the Kellysy be the last Wexford family to suffer the heartbreak of mourning a road victim this year, but we can only hope. My personal hope for the family is that they find the strength from somewhere to get through the difficult days, weeks, months and even years, ahead.

THE NEW RYANAIR RYANAIR is continuing its efforts to change its image and is now airing the company’s first TV adverts in twenty years. Gone are the brash 1 to Spain, 2 to someplace else message and in their place are subtle quality adverts focusing on some of the improvements the airline has delivered in the recent past. And Michael O’Leary is nowhere to be seen. One of the adverts focuses on the ‘hassle’ free website. To look

MODEST NO MORE I see that the old law under which prosecutions were brought against males for ‘offending modesty’ has been struck down by the High Court. ‘Offending Modesty’ was a polite term for indecent exposure which in effect was when a man removed his trousers in a public place or if he didn’t remove his trousers but still managed to make public the parts of him that should not be displayed in a public place, if you understand what I’m saying.

Anyway, regardless of how much modesty is offended in future guys cannot be prosecuted under the old act. I can only imagine the scenes which people will be faced with as they spill out of late night venues from now on, or at least until the Oireachtas gets around to passing a new law on the matter. So if your modesty is easily offended I’d say you’d be better staying indoors at weekends for a while.

YOUR VIEWS If you have a view on anything in this column, or you’d like to express your own opinion on something just e-mail me at ger.walsh@thechronicle.ie Indeed, if you have something you’d like to get off your chest just send us a brief note on what you have in mind and we’ll see if it would be suitable for a ‘platform’ piece.

at the advert you’d think that all you had to do was look at the site and it would do the booking itself. But the one I like best is for

the relaxation of the carry-on baggage allowance. Remember in the past the way you were in danger of being charged if you had a bag of boiled sweets in your

hand.? Well that’s all over now and you can safely take two bags, I will miss the sight of all those ladies trying to stuff their handbags under their clothing before they made their way to the boarding gate! But Ryanair hasn’t completely lost the run of its self, I ‘m glad to report. Regardless of how smooth and high end the telly adverts look, they are not really high budget productions--------they were all shot in a single day, to save money, no doubt.

A DAD’S DOUBLE DELIVERY BETH Kavanagh had reason to blink once or twice when she looked at her Facebook page. There was a message on the screen saying ‘Your Dad is married to my mum. They have three sons—and I am one’. The trouble was ‘Dad’ was also married to Beth’s mum and she knew nothing of his other family. The facebook exchange went on to reveal how Beth’s Dad

had been living with his other family half of the time. When he was away with ‘work’ he was actually with them. Hard to believe isn’t it. But seemingly the family all believed that Dad Kevin’s work as an accountant for a large fruit and vegetable distributor kept him away and he even blamed work for the fact that he could never be with the family on Christmas Day. ‘There was always talk

of meetings up and down the country and overseeing early deliveries’, Beth of Northumberland says. I’d say they must have been the most gullible family in the world. So the next time your partner says he’s off to work, or has an early delivery to make, just be careful and make sure you know exactly what he is delivering.,

ARE TRAVELLER FAMILIES GIVEN MORE LEEWAY FROM COUNCIL ? TRAVELLER families sometimes appear to be treated differently to other tenants of the local authority, a Wexford councillor has claimed. Cllr Anthony Kelly told a meeting of Wexford Borough Council that some traveller families ‘seem to get away with a lot more than other residents’. He stressed that the majority of traveller family tenants did not cause any difficulties but he said some seemed to be able to get away with a lot in terms of having a number of caravans or extra cars around their house. He said these families seemed to be given a lot of leeway and that similar activities by other tenants would not be tolerated. He was told by Ray Colfer of the Local Traveller Consultative Committee that if he had specific instances in mind to forward them on and they would be investigated. Cllr Kelly was speaking at the presentation of the final draft plan for Traveller Accommodation to councillors.

The report reveals that the local authorities in Wexford currently have seven group housing schemes for traveller accommodation situated throughout the county, The largest is at Drumgoold in Enniscorthy which has fourteen units, while Marconi Park, also in Enniscorthy is next largest with eight units. Na Coillte in Bunclody has seven units while four separate areas in New Ross have a total of ten units. According to the report in the vast majority of these schemes no negative issues have arisen. However, the scheme at Marconi Park in Enniscorthy continues to present challenges for the local authorities and the local communities. The report reveals that these problems relate to both occupancy and anti-social behaviour and despite intensive efforts to solve them the local authorities have so far been unsuccessful. The report also reveals that there are currently ninety two families sharing accommodation with

ROW OVER COUNCIL’S PARKING CASH HARBOUR

MOTORISTS parking in Wexford town contributed a net income of 334,552 to the local Borough Council last year. Last month parking ticket machines collected 332.80 per hour in fees across the town, Cllr. Jim Allen was told at a Council meeting. However, Town Clerk, Angela Laffan, could not give a breakdown for the amounts collected at different hours of the day because the ticket machines are not currently set up to provide that information.

A move to relax the environmental rules which govern activities in Wexford Habour to facilitate future development of the area were strongly criticised by Green Party councillor Danny Forde, at a meeting of the Borough Council. Cllr Forde lashed out at efforts by his colleagues to have the Special Protection Area which governs the harbour relaxed in any way and said it had not adversely affected any proposed developments in or around the harbour.

relatives or living in yards of households around the county. The main reason for individuals and families sharing with relatives is the difficulty in accessing private rented accommodation, the shortfall between rents and rent allowances as well as family members wishing to remain at home until marriage or returning home due to relationship breakdown. The report also notes that domestic violence is prevalent among the traveller community and the local authorities continue to support individual traveller women experiencing domestic violence. With the structure of the Traveller population very different to the general population, with a particularly strong representation among young age cohorts and the tendency of travellers to marry at a much young age, further strain is likely to be put on the current traveller housing programme during five years of the plan.

He said it was a major benefit to have the SPA in place and had helped promote Ferrybank Recreation Park. But Labour councillor Joe Ryan who made the call for the environment minister to re-negotiate Natura 2000, under which the harbour is controlled, with the EU, insisted that the harbour needed development. There were angry clashes when Cllr Forde recalled what he said were unfounded claims made about what the SPA would mean for those using the harbour, when it was first proposed. But councillor Davy Hynes said that at the time people had genuine concerns about what it would mean and what activities would be prohibited.

IT’S TIME TO MAKE MORE OF WEXFORD’S QUAY FRONT A radical new plan to help make the most of Wexford’s quayfront is to be examined following an admission that it is not being used to its full potential. Now local authority officials are to see how the quayfront could be used better to boost tourism by developing it as a multi-purpose public space for concerts, recreational activities and specialist markets. Fine Gael councillor, Jim Allen, whose motion at last week’s meeting of the

Borough Council sparked a debate on the quayfront, also wants to see a greater acknowledgement of Wexford’s Viking roots and proposals to develop the streets leading onto the quay, as part of the overall plan. Cllr Allen said the quayfront was a great asset to have in the town, but it was not being used to its full potential. However, while calling for more activities on the quayfront Cllr. Allen also stressed the need to be careful about what activities take

Cllr Phil Roche recalled that during her term as Mayor some work had been done to mark the history of the harbour. However, she said Wexford had not made the most of its maritime history. Cllr Davy Hynes agreed the quayfront could be used more but he said a lot of people already enjoyed the facility.

ALL CHANGE AND NO CHANGE AT THE SAME TIME By Ger Walsh THEY are about to be no more, but you would never guess that Wexford Borough Council is on its death bed. The members are still displaying tremendous energy, passion and interest in just about everything for a group whose death will be announced before the end of May. Indeed such was the passion, and sometimes anger, on display at the April meeting that some of the members could be in danger of hastening their personal demise if they don’t lighten up a bit. No doubt the forthcoming local elections and the greater challenge which will be faced by some in trying to win a seat on the enlarged Council

is playing no small part in their anxiety.

Paddy Nolan It was my first time at a Borough Council meeting since 1988, it used to be called the Corporation then, but they are a lot more posh these

days. There are only two survivors, well three if your count reporter Maria Pepper, from that time, Padge Reck and Paddy Nolan. Both are to bow out of politics next month. Many of the others who were sitting around the table at that time are still in the chamber, but they now exist only as images hanging on the walls in their robes of Office. The Council has of course moved to its new ‘home’ in Spawell Road from the Municipal Building, so the chamber is different, so too are the high-tech electronic blinds which the Mayor ordered to be closed before proceedings began. Whether it was to shut out the light or just to show that as an all powerful first citizen he could

bring darkness where there was none, I don’t know. Then there is the bottled water. There was no water back in the day, but I often remember the Mayor’s Parlour being opened up to quench the thirst after meetings. But it wasn’t bottled water we enjoyed. And then there was the sight of the Co. Manager tapping away as his I pad during the meeting. It’s sort of difficult to believe now but back then we all existed without mobile devices of any kind. But there are some things that never change. There was a lot of debate, for example, about car parking on match days around Wexford Park, an issue that has remained constant over the decades.

And when councillor Joe Ryan asked the Borough

imagined it was the late Jimmy O’Mahoney asked about door frames in Bishopswater. Ah yes, it’s all change in a way and no change at all at the same time. However, when Big Phil Hogan presides at the funeral service for virtually all urban authorities next month things will certainly change and that piece of local democracy which is closest to the people will cease to exist. Sure it will save money, and at a time of very scarce resources the country needs to save every penny it can, but it will be sad all the same to see a little piece of Wexford history disappearing under Big Phil’s overcoat.

Political Notebook JOE IS NOT A SKY MAN LABOUR candidate in the Wexford District, Joe Ryan, is probably fortunate that he is not seeking election in an area where publishing magnate Rupert Murdoch holds sway. Last week the Labour man revealed that he does not have any Sky television services in his house It’s not a just a question of

the Wexford District. He is just completing his second term as a member of the Borough Council but with the abolition of the urban authority he has no option but to seek a seat at Co. Council level this time around. Most Labour candidates will have their work cut out on this time occasion

Has Jackser’s time come at last? JACKSER Owens has long been a very popular member of the Urban Council in Enniscorthy. Indeed, many years ago his father, the late Tommy Owens, had a seat on the Town Council as well. Five years ago Jackser and his supporters were very confident that he would make the breakthrough for a seat on the Co. Council and

in the process unseat the veteran Enniscorthy Independent Sean Doyle. In the event Doyle lost his seat but there was no place for Owens on a day when Fine Gael and Labour took the spoils in the Enniscorthy District. Fast forward five years and everything has changed. Doyle is retiring, Pat Cody

money, although it can probably be safely assumed that the high price of Sky services does play a role in Joe’s decision to ban the Sky box from his home. But he has a more fundamental problem with Sky and it has much to do with the man who essentially controls it, Rupert Murdoch. Not only does Joe take a very dim view of Sky television and all it stands for, he has no time for the Murdoch owned newspapers either. He listed a series of sins of the Murdoch empire from hacking the phones of murder victims to the treatment of the victims of Hillsborough all those years ago as he denounced the media tycoon as a person without morals He made his views known last week when councillors in Wexford were discussing the decision by the GAA to do a deal with Sky for the broadcast of some games in his year’s championship. While most councillors confined their comments to the GAA deal Joe had no hesitation in sharing his views on Sky generally. That’s when he revealed that he would not allow a Sky box inside his house. The Labour councillor is currently trying to get himself elected to the Co. Council for the first time in

and Ryan is unlikely to be an exception. He was the fourth of four Labour members elected to the Borough Council four years which gives some indication of the task he faces. However, just one of the three who were elected to the Borough Council with him in 2009 will battle for a Co. Council seat on this occasion. George Lawlor is expected to poll strongly again this time around, but Ted Howlin is retiring and Davy Hynes will stand as an independent this time. One of the sub battles within the Wexford District could be between Ryan and Hynes for a second left leaning seat in the Wexford Urban area. Hynes will have lost some support as a result of his defection from the Labour Party, but that same decision is also likely to have won him many more admirers. Hynes’ departure will mean that Ryan will have stronger support from within the Labour party but whether that will be sufficient to get him ahead of Hynes is anyone’s guess. At the moment and the campaign is not fully underway yet, the odds would seem to favour Hynes, but a lot could change between now and polling day.

THE decision of the boundary commission to move Taghmon from the Wexford District to the New Ross Electoral area was certainly a factor in Pat Codd’s decision to retire from local politics. It will also mean that an area which has enjoyed direct representation at Co. Council level for many years is in danger of being left in the wilderness after the election. Taghmon is now in the corner of the New Ross District and many of those elected from that district will have little connection with

the new territory. One candidate who does have Taghmon connections is, however, the New Ross town based Labour candidate, Ollie Somers. Many years ago he was a Taghmon resident and was very active in many local organisations. Lately he has been spending a bit of time back in the area no doubt hoping that he can present himself as a sort of ‘local’ replacement for Pat Codd in the parish.

ALL NEW ON THE EURO SCENE Brian Crowley who is formerly of Labour and now PEOPLE in Wexford will Ireland’s longest serving an independent, is standing have a whole new set of MEP. in Dublin and Fianna Fail’s European representatives The candidate most local to Liam Alyward is retiring after next month’s election, Wexford is not that it is Simon likely to lead Harris from to a dramatic Wicklow change in who seems anyone’s life. to be the Wexford is only now part of ‘Leinster’ the South candidate constituency standing at instead of the moment. being in East. Wexford over the Gael team and Fianna Fail’s next month or so. West, Nessa Childers,

who won Labour’s seat sadly passed away last year and the number of seats available has gone up for five to eight. All this and the fact that Independents have never been showing as strongly in opinion polls certainly suggests that Jackser will be on his way to Co. Hall when the votes are counted next month.

ELECTION BOOST FOR GEORGE

LOCAL election candidates are always trying to come up with new ways to promote themselves but few will be able to better Mayor George Lawlor’s efforts. He has a starring role in this year’s Wexford Light Opera Society’s production of Sister Act. It runs for a full week at the end of this month at Wexford Opera House. What better way to kick off your local election campaign than by performing in front of packed house in the theatre every night for a week. It beats knocking on doors any day and will do George’s profile no harm at all, not that he needs any more profile as he comes to the end of another successful ear as Mayor of Wexford. He will, of course, have the distinction of being the last ever Mayor to head up Wexford Borough Council.

Wexford Drama Group heads for All Ireland Finals WEXFORD Drama Group will take their play ‘Other Desert Cities’ by Jon Robin Baitz to Athlone on May 9 at the Dean Crowe Theatre as part of the RTE All Ireland Drama Festival Finals. The group previously reached the final in 2011 and 2007. ‘Other Desert Cities’ tells the story of wealthy republican family the Wyeth’s who welcome their

children home for Christmas. Brooke, their daughter, announces that she has written her memoirs and a devastating family secret looks set to unravel and disturb the fragile peace in the family home. With moments of laugh-out-loud comedy and scenes of dramatic tension, the play is not-to-be missed. Starring Adrienne Meyler,

Heather Hadrill, Sinead Murphy, Phil Lyons and Stephen Byrne, the play has already won a variety of awards on the amateur circuit including Best Show at Wexford Drama Festival. The Wexford pre-circuit run earlier this year was both the Irish and European premier of the play which is currently running in the West End in London.

Wexford has one last chance to see the play before it is bound for Athlone. It runs in the Dun Mhuire Theatre on April 18 (Good Friday) at 8 p.m. Tickets are available on the door or from 086 3859 925. Tickets are Priced at €12 and €10.

As you will see some parts of the town have changed dramatically but others are almost the same today as they were in the early part of the last century.

Tune of the Week The tune of the last week for me was undoubtedly, James Vincent McMarrrow’s “Higher Love”. The song, from 2011, has only started to gain public recognition in the last number of months, when it entered the Irish charts 14 weeks ago. It is still holding its own at number 23 after all this time. McMarrow has also been announced to headline Longitude Music Festival in Marlay Park later this year, which is not to be missed! – Adam

OH LOOK, I’M A MODEL According to what I see online Wexford has the most professional ‘models’ of any county in Ireland. At least twice a month you will see ‘My first modelling shoot’ popping up on social media. Right, let’s get to the bottom of this once and for all; paying for a photo#shoot does NOT make you a model. Photo#shoots are great fun I must say but anybody can get one from one of the many great photographers in Wexford. First of all you need to have the full package to be a model and a face like a tin of jelly beans is not the full package, huns. This is nothing against people who want to look good in front of the camera, which can be a great thing to look back on when you advance on in life. Just please don’t be that person who declares they’re a ‘model’ when in fact you paid for a photo#shoot.

So enjoy your photoshoots and strut your stu, YOU GO GIRLS!!!  Eoin

HOT ! KANYE AND PHARRELL Kanye West and Pharrell have announced a concert in Dublin this July. After Kanye’s widely renowned “Watch the Throne” tour with Jay# Z, the rapper has teamed up with Oscar nominee Pharrell for a return to Dublin. Tickets went on sale last Friday and the event, which will take place in Marlay Park, is expected to sell out. – Adam.

NOT ! JAMES ARTHUR As if James Arthur’s homophobic outbursts last year wasn’t enough to ruin his career, he’s gone and topped it! Arthur has been fired from Simon Cowell’s record label after releasing lyrics to his new song “Follow the Leader” which are said to glorify terrorism. The Middlesbrough#born singer has made no apologies and is adamant in defending his choice of words. ….Delighted he got the boot! – Adam

Rant of the Week!

Yay! This will probably hit a few raw

nerves, but sher look..! Again, it’s something that people do on Facebook that really irks me; when people who are on “The Dole” upload photos of their pints at 2 O’clock on a Wednesday afternoon. Sorry now, but there’s no way that they should be able to afford to go drinking pints all day if they’re claiming social welfare. They’re the same people that go out on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday too. Is the whole idea not that they can afford their necessities? Last time I checked, drinking all day isn’t a basic human right. Go do something constructive with your lives, or don’t, just don’t try brag on Facebook with a picture of your 3 pint of Tennent’s while other people are in work. Grrr! Adam

ASK ALAN

Wexford Agony Uncle

I SHOULD HAVE BEEN INVITED TO MEET THE QUEEN Dear Alan, I was prompted to write to you when I read last week’s letter from David in Manchester. You see I have been a great United fan all my life. Some of my greatest memories are of visits to Old Trafford and the dinners we used to have before the games. I often went over without a penny in my pocket and came back bulging with cash. Oh those were the days. Ah but Alan those days are long gone now and David has done to United what Cowen did to our little club here in Ireland after I left. I suppose it really is difficult to follow great men but the two of them made a right bags of it, didn’t they?. But Alan enough about United, although I could talk all day about their problems and what needs to be done. You see I have troubles of my own. There was a time not too long ago when I was the toast of the nation. I couldn’t go to any part of the country without people rushing up to kiss me, slap me on the back and even shove fist-fulls of euros into my pockets. Sure I had so much money at one stage I was afraid to take it to the bank. Instead I dug a big hole in the back garden and buried it there. I was lucky I did that because years later a crowd of fellas in wigs came after me and you know what, if they had found the money I swear they’d have taken it for themselves Then I was really King of the country. I could walk on water. You may think I joking but honest to God, I could. The whole place around here was flooded one time and in the middle of the night I went out into the floods and had my photo taken just to prove that I really was magical. But as I said those days are long over. Now people don’t want to know me, I don’t get invited to anything and even when I go to my local pub I can’t be sure that some eegit won’t throw a punch in my direction. Then last week I was sitting at home, turned on the TV and there was that little Higgins fella and his missus waltzing around Windsor Castle with the Queen. I was fuming. A few years ago he’d have been lucky to get into Legoland in Windsor, let alone the Castle. I was just getting over the shock of seeing him when up popped old Balaclava McGuiness. I almost fainted. He looked like an import from the House of Lords with his

tails and tie. I really thought I was seeing things. I knew it wasn’t the drink because I am off it for Lent. But then came the final straw. In marched Dame Enda himself. He was laughing and joking with all the Lords and ladies as if he knew what he was talking about. Alan do they not realise that none of them would be there only for me. I made it all possible. But now I am a forgotten man, Gone, just a footnote in history. I was so depressed by the sight of Enda, Balaclava and the rest of them that I took to the bed and I haven’t been out since. Alan is this what I devoted my life’s work to achieve--------Little Michael, Dame Enda and Balaclava dining with the Queen?. If I had known this was how it was going to turn out I don’t think I would have bothered. And you know while they were dining with more knives and forks in front of each of them than I have in my entire house, all I had was a chicken curry from the local takeaway. I am really depressed. What should I do?. BERTIE, DRUMCONDRA Dear Bertie, I can fully understand your upset. But I think you have just got to pull yourself together and face the world again. Go out to the garden and dig up some of that money you buried all those years ago----------you don’t have to worry now the tribunals are all closed up----------and take yourself off for a break. You could go to Windsor yourself. It’s a beautiful place at this time of the year. Get yourself a table a Windsor races, take a boat trip up the Thames and take a Selfie of yourself with Windsor Castle in the background. Post the picture on your Facebook page and some people will think you were there as part of the State visit. Even if they don’t you could keep staring at in and in time you will imagine you were there and it will boost your confidence no end. While on your travels I would suggest that you don’t go to Manchester. If you go to Old Trafford you will come away only more depressed and the days are long gone when you would have your pockets stuffed with cash after a game. I hear the Glaziers are very tight with money. Take care of yourself ALAN

Solemn Sung Mass Easter Highlight THE traditional solemn sung Easter mass in the Church of the Assumption Bride will be the highlight of the Easter ceremonies in Wexford town this weekend. The mass, which will be celebrated by Fr. Aodhan Marken will include music from the Viennese tradition, including the Irish premier of a newly composed mass by

Manfred Hoessi, written in the classical style, for choir, organ and brass ensemble. As well as traditional Easter

One of the new faces for Fine Gael in the Local Election 2014. In working with Dr Liam Twomey TD in the Anne Street Office, I meet with members of the public on a daily basis dealing with many issues such as housing, grant aid, medical card applications, Social Welfare issues, and various Council queries. KIA SOUL RECEIVES 2014 RED DOT DESIGN AWARD STYLISH compact SUV repeats success of firstgeneration Soul model with second prestigious design award. New model has already received the 2014 ‘iF design’ award. All-new model on a new platform retains iconic appearance and character. On sale in Ireland in May. The all-new Kia Soul has been awarded a prestigious ‘red dot’ design award, following in the footsteps of its stylish first-generation predecessor. With its upright, confident posture, broad shoulders, iconic window shape and SUV ground clearance, the second-generation Soul was crowned winner in the 2014

‘Product Design’ category by the red dot jury, the same award earned by the original Soul in 2009. This is the second major design award for the new Soul, following its success in the highly respected ‘iF design awards’ only few weeks ago. The new model – which adopts an allnew platform based on that of the current-generation Kia cee’d – will go on sale in Ireland in May . It will be powered by a direct injection engine a 128 ps (94 kW) turbodiesel unit. The new Kia Soul was

created by the Kia design team under the supervision of Peter Schreyer, President and Chief Design Officer of Kia

the original model, which was the first Korean car to receive a red dot design award in 2009. This first

accolade was followed by numerous other red dot awards, and the new Kia Soul is the eleventh Kia model to

receive the prestigious prize. Peter Schreyer commented: “I am particularly pleased with this second red dot design award for the Kia Soul. When the firstgeneration model launched, the award played a key role in bringing the Kia Soul and Kia’s distinctive design language to the attention of a wider audience. “The great challenge we faced when designing the second-generation model was to preserve the strong, individual character of the Kia Soul and, at the same time, give the design new impulses. Our design team has performed this task impressively. The new Kia Soul is a lot more mature and

‘adult’ in appearance, and the bold, distinctive personality of this model is highlighted even more.” The design of Kia’s secondgeneration Soul is inspired by the Kia Track’ster concept shown at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. Similar to the concept, the production model features a large trapezoidal lower air intake, low fog lights pushed to the edges of the front bumper, Kia’s signature ‘tiger-nose’ grille and the avant-garde design of the rear with the unique ‘floating’ bodycoloured panel on the tailgate. The high quality comfort of the interior significantly enhance the appeal of the second-generation model.

SPORT

LARRY O’GORMAN The man who gets Behind the Sports Headlines I THINK IT WILL BE KILKENNY VERSUS CLARE IN THE LEAGUE HURLING FINAL WELL I suppose we never really expected to be in there for the decisive stages of the League and after the defeat in Wexford Park a fortnight ago we are merely spectators as the last four prepare to do battle this weekend. Even though we always suspected we wouldn’t be there at the finish it’s still not pleasant to be on the sidelines for this important weekend in hurling. But that’s the way it is and as far as Wexford are concerned it’s a case of roll on the championship. The Gaelic Grounds in Limerick is the venue for both league semi-finals on Sunday. It’s a venue which is very central for the four teams taking part so there should be a big crowd and a great atmosphere on the day, Kilkenny and Limerick are first into the fray with a 2pm throw in for the opening semi-final. This game should be a real cracker. The last time the sides met it was a very close encounter with Kilkenny winning by a single goal. On that occasion Kilkenny were experimenting with a lot of new talent but remember brother, Galway were without the Portumna boys that day because they were involved in the AllIreland Club championship. Kilkenny will have a stronger side on this occasion but equally Galway will be strengthened by the Portumna players and I believe that the game will go down to the wire. I know Kilkenny have the ability to blow teams away. And they have done it on a number of occasions this year, but Galway are a very physical team plus they have a lot of speed in their side. They would obviously like to get a win over Kilkenny before the championship starts. Kilkenny will be banking on

the experience of boys like Shefflin, Reid, Larkin and J J Delaney to see them through while Galway will be looking to Joe Canning, Damian Hayes, Conor Cooney, Fergal Moore and David Collins to pull them through. As I said I think it will be a

are the real form side coming into this game while on the other hand Tipperary are struggling somewhat with their form. Their last meeting saw a big victory for Clare who scored 4-14 to Tipperary’s 20 points. So on form and on the

game as we in Wexford know only too well. I think this game will be much closer than their previous meeting. Why?, well for one thing Tipp have been finding the net a lot more easily in their last two games and are starting to play with

However, I don’t agree. I think both teams will be very defensive, fully aware that if they give too much space to their opponents they will be severely punished. I think the difference between the teams might not emerge until late on. Then

IT’S FREE ON TV THE good news is that the vultures in Sky have not got their hands on these league semi-final games so the matches will be free in every living room in the country. That means you don’t have to go to the pub to watch it, but I suppose you could always come up with so excuse to go for a pint anyway. The matches are on TG4 so you can sit back and enjoy them wherever you are, even if you haven’t a clue what they are saying. And since its Easter Sunday you can open an Easter Egg and enjoy whatever other treats you like now that Lent is over.

THE FAT FAKE WEDDING

Brian Cody pictured with his subs bench when Kilkenny visited Wexford Park recently. On Sunday he will be attempting to lead his men to another League Final. By Patrick Hogan very close affair, a very though battle, not one for the faint hearted, but in the end I think Kilkenny will win it with a few points to spare. On then to the second game and this too should be a tremendous contest. Clare

evidence of their last meeting Clare must be firm favourites to advance to the League final. However, I think it would be very foolish to write off Tipperary. it’s always foolish to dismiss Tipperary in any

a bit more confidence. So far in the league Clare have scored 12 goals and 107 points while Tipp have scored 13 goals and 120 points. This would lead you to believe that this will be a very high scoring encounter.

with legs getting tired I think Clare will have too much in the tank and will eventually run out winners. For me then it’s a Kilkenny V Clare league final.

HOW THEY SCORED SO FAR It’s interesting to look at the scoring records of the four teams in the semi-finals in the league so far this season. Top scorers by a long shot are Kilkenny who scored 20 goals and 111 points in their games so far. They had ten goals and 98 points scored against them. Tipperary scored 13 goals and 120 points, but had 16 goals and 105 points scored against them.

Clare put 12 goals and 107 points on the scoreboard with 5 goals and 109 points scored against them. Galway have not been in great goal scoring form hitting the net just seven times in the course of their league run. They also scored 109 points. They conceded 5 goals and 101 points in their games so far.

I’LL be in all sorts of trouble if I don’t mention The Big Fat Fake Wedding which is on this weekend. I’m sort of one of the stars in the thing, you see, but it has a great overall cast, so it should be a good night’s entertainment. The venue is White’s Hotel on Easter Sunday night. It has a 6pm start, the tickets are 27 and for that you’ll get a four course meal, plenty of entertainment. What more could you ask for. And since it’s a Bank Holiday weekend you can stay in the bed on Monday if it’s all too much for you. The whole thing is in aid of the Faythe Harriers hurling Club and is a fundraiser to help get the cash to build the new clubhouse. So come on down, sure you’ll have a great night.

LOCAL TRAINERS DOMINATE AT WEXFORD’S FIRST EVENING CARD OF THE SEASON Photos by Ray Flynn

The horses are led arolund the paraded ring prior to the start of of the bumper at Wexford on Friday evening. IT was a great night for the locals at Wexford races last Friday evening when both Liz Doyle and Paul Nolan scored doubles during the seven race programme. Fine weather throughout the day brought a good attendance to the Bettyville course and there was good quality racing on offer with a number of exciting finishes, not least in the concluding bumper event which saw the Nina Carberry ridden Josephene Marcus just

emerge victorious for the Noel Meade yard. Josephene Marcus was returned at odds of 6/1 But earlier in the evening the card was dominated by local trainers. The feature event on the programme was the Welcome To Chef Phelim Byrne Seasuir To the Ivy Room Handicap Hurdle which was won by Maguire’s Glen from the Liz Doyle yard. The 9/2 shot was ridden by Adrian Heskin and was originally a reserve making

the starting line up because one of the other declared horses was a non-runner. The second leg of Liz Doyle’s double came in the Taghmon Athletic Club Raceday Handicap Chase with the 5/1 shot Lord Alfie scoring. Most impressive winner of the evening was the Paul Nolan trained Highbrow Blub which was ridden by champion jockey Davy Russell. This horse had been available at 3/1 in the morning but was backed all

the way in to evens before the off. Those who invested never had any doubts about their cash. Russell sent his charge to the front well before the final fence and he eased into a commanding lead to come home very impressively indeed. Paul Nolan’s other winner had come just thirty minutes earlier in the Oysters Point Handicap Hurdle when Seven

Time for a bet Aces scored under Robbie Power. Despite being returned at 9/1 Seven Aces was not without his supporters and was available at up to 20/1 in the morning before opening on course at 12/i. This was effectively the start

of the course’s Spring/Summer racing programme and following a very successful opening season fixture on St. Patrick’s Day the executive will have been well pleased with the turnout on Friday evening.
