Wexford responds to Calais crisis An independent group of Wexford people have come together, in response to the humanitarian crisis unfolding around the port of Calais. 'Wexford-Calais Refugee Solidarity' aims to collect and deliver humanitarian aid to the refugees living in “The Jungle”, the name given to the camp. The current refugee crisis is the largest since the atrocities of WW2. Desperate families are fleeing war-torn countries like Syria, Lebanon and North Africa and embarking on difficult, dangerous and often fatal journeys, leaving behind their homes and loved ones. With strict border controls to enter both Britain and Ireland, the situation in Calais is

worsening. . In response there has been an outpouring of unity and action from ordinary people.. A convoy is departing Ireland, with help from Nolan Transport and Stena Line on October 1st. Groups have begun fundraising to help with the cost of delivering and purchasing materials to build shelters and supply food for the people of the camp.. The Wexford group is growing from strength to strength, with the organisers saying people have literally been shocked into action.. There are several local collection points being offered. You can join the facebook group Wexford Calais refugee

solidarity for updates https://www.facebook.com/gro ups/984499341572147/. The Wexford group hope to fill a container of goods! At present local business Leisure Max have kindly offered to take clearly labelled donations at their entertainment complex in Sinnottstown Lane on the outskirts of Wexford town, and this for now will be Wexford’s central drop off point. The group hopes to acquire a short term sorting/storage space, and would be delighted to hear from any premises owner that may have a large warehouse/ storage facility for the month of September. The Calais camp is in

Stars of both stage and screen will converge on Enniscorthy on Wednesday October 28th., for the Wexford premiere of ‘Brooklyn’, the film adaptation of Colm Toibin’s New York Times best selling novel of the same name. Enniscorthy has been chosen by the film distributers, Lionsgate U.K. to host the first public screening of ‘Brooklyn’, after its national premiere in Dublin, because of Mr. Toibin’s strong associations with the town and also because much of the movie’s content was filmed in Enniscorthy. Wexford County Council and Lionsgate U.K. will jointly host the premiere in Enniscorthy’s Riverside Park Hotel, the ballroom and reception area of which will be transformed into a magnificent cinematic auditorium for the Wexford premiere.. . Saoirse Ronan who plays the lead role of ‘Eilis’ in ‘Brooklyn’ has already confirmed her attendance at the Wexford premiere where

she will be joined by the book’s author, Colm Toibin, who is flying in from New York for the event. . The Diocese of Ferns History and Archives Commission located at St Peter’s College, will open up its historical archives to the public at a launch in the College on Tuesday, 15 September at 7:30pm by Minister for Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin This is the first time the historical archives will be available to researchers, historians and individuals who are interested in County Wexford church history. The archive, which is held in the renovated Diocesan History and Archive Commission facility on the campus of St. Peter’s College, Wexford, has among its collection a book printed in 1547 and also contains thousands of

important collections of papers, incunabula and artefacts, including: • The Hore Manuscripts • Papal Bulls of Episcopal appointments (parchment with Papal Seals) • Documents relating to all postReformation Bishops • Documents and letters relating to all foundations in the Diocese of Ferns • The GrattanFlood, Kehoe and O’Donovan collections • Various photographs, vestments, bibles, parish histories and assorted books

The Committee comprised of Diocesan Clergy, Archivists and Historians have been working on the project for a number of years. Commenting on the historical archive, Fr Aidan Jones, Chairman of the History and Archives Commission stated “ that the many of the of the Manuscripts are irreplaceable and the archives is an unique repository as thousands of records relating to County Wexford copied by Herbert and Philip Hore were destroyed in the Four Courts Fire during the Civil War will be made available to view”.

19.8% drop in Wexford jobless since 2012 Fine Gael TD, Minister Paul Kehoe has said that a 19.8% drop in the Live Register since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs in 2012 indicates the steady growth in the economy in Wexford.

recovery is still fragile and there are still people who have not felt its benefits. “Fine Gael in government

has cut the USC and reduced the income tax rate. It is important that we continue to add more jobs and to make work pay by reducing the tax

burden further. We cannot risk a move back to the ‘if we have it, we’ll spend it’, high tax Fianna Fáil policies.”

“Each week in 2015 over 1,300 jobs have been added to the economy showing that the Government’s plan to get the economy back on track is working. All regions have experienced job increases and unemployment decreases in the past year, meaning that the recovery is spreading to all parts of the country. “The latest CSO Live Register figures show that the number of people signing on in Wexford has dropped by 19.8% since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs in 2012. 125,000 new jobs have been added across the country. “While there is still more work to be done, the recovery is spreading to all parts of the country, and it is important that we work hard to continue to support further growth. A steady, stable and sustainable economy is that the people of Wexford need and deserve. This is what the Government is committed to achieving. “The Government is on track to replace all the jobs lost in the crisis by 2018 and to bring about a situation where there will be more Irish people coming back home to take up jobs. “There is no doubt that more jobs and opportunities are needed here in Wexford but the Live Register figures are very encouraging. Uilleann pipes and Wexford’s Rowsome family

Strictly an over 18’s event

The remarkable contributions of the Rowsome family, descendents of Wexford musician Samuel Rowsome, to the 300-year history of the uilleann pipes, are detailed in a new book entitled The Wheels of The World by Irish authors Colin Harper and John McSherry. Samuel Rowsome was a popular piper in the 1820s who lived in Ballintore in the barony of Scarawalsh, County Wexford. His grandson Leo Rowsome is regarded as one of the mainstays of the uilleann pipes tradition in the middle of the last century, alongside such other celebrated stalwarts as Seamus Ennis and Willie Clancy. Leo married Helena Williams from Taghmon, and Harper acknowledges Leo as one of the best pipers of the 20th and 21th centuries. He compares his dexterity to that of guitar heroes such as Jimi Hendrix, and believes that the famous Italian composer Vivaldi would have composed

for a player of Leo’s superior talent. Harper also makes several references to Leo’s father, Samuel’s son William, who learned music from a German teacher in Ferns, started making pipes in Dublin and impressed many with his playing when he returned to Wexford. Other descendants of Wexfordman Samuel Rowsome covered in The Wheels of The World include Ciaran, Kevin, Leon, Thomas, Helena and Tom Rowsome. The book also concedes that there was a time when the uilleann pipes, once known as “the Irish organ”, were “not always welcome in the Irish tradition”, so there’s little doubt that the five generations of the Rowsome family played a major role in re-establishing the instrument as a major force in Irish music. This mammoth survey also reveals how the uilleann pipes came back into prominence in

the Irish folk scene in modern times thanks to the playing of Liam O’Flynn, Davy Spillane, the book’s co-author John McSherry, Paddy Moloney, Paddy Keenan and Finbar Furey, all of whom helped popularise the instrument, both at home and far beyond these shores.

the prospect of a convention upset it is likely that both Kehoe and D’arcy will win through. Cllr Fitzharris is a relative newcomer to politics having been elected for the first time in 2014. Since his election to the Co. Council he has adopted a relatively low profile and his decision to put his name before convention has come as a surprise to political observers. A two candidate line up is likely to provide Fine Gael with its best prospect of holding on to its two Wexford seats on a reduced vote. The campaign aim would be to win enough votes for each candidate to have them high enough on the first count to benefit from transfers to enable them to keep ahead of the pack.

News Political Diary

Howlin is blamed for everything, including making it more difficult to win the Lotto The budget is just over a month away and as soon as it is announced the general election campaign will be underway, regardless of whether polling day is in November or February. The tax changes and spending proposals announced in the budget will form the battleground for the election with the government parties hoping that the extra cash they

will deliver to people’s pockets by way of tax cuts and social welfare adjustments will help deliver more support for them at the polls. Wexford TD Brendan Howlin will, of course, play a big part in delivering that budget, in his role as Public Expenditure Minister. Budget Day will be a very important one for Minister Howlin because the proposals

he announces with Michael Noonan will be hugely significant in terms of the future strength of the Labour Party but it will also be important at a personal level because it will be a sort of sign-off to his role as rebuilder of the nation over the past five years. Howlin has been centrally involved in decisions which have paved the way for the recovery and getting the economy back into growth. That is no mean achievement given the state of the country when he took up his role in government. However, on the way he has become totally associated with salary cuts, reductions in services for the elderly, cutbacks in education, withdrawal of services for the handicapped cuts, the imposition of Property Tax and Water Charges and also perception that he and his party broke virtually every promise which they made at the last general election. This may be unfair and it

may be particularly unfair that he does not appear to get credit locally either for his role in getting the State’s finances back into a healthier position or the level of investment that he has secured for Wexford in

terms of schools, roads, Garda Stations and Courthouses, but unfortunately for him everything seems to be overshadowed by a perception that he has been the principal architect of smashing election promises and that he imposed measures which hurt most

those who he would claim to represent. Nowhere is this perception more evident than on the ground in Wexford, a town Brendan Howlin has represented at Oireachtas level for more than thirty years. During that time he has always had huge support from the people of the town and since his election to the Dail in 1987 has never had a worry about re-election. Now after two terms as a government Minister, four years as Leas Ceann Comhairle and after nearly three decades on his party’s front bench, it looks like he is heading into his most difficult election since the only one he lost, November 1982. Ironically Howlin may be much better regarded internationally than his is in the housing estates of Wexford where he is blamed for everything including making it more difficult to win the lotto as a result of selling it off. That international recognition

and his work to get Ireland out of the bailout means he has a lot of options at European level where his expertise and experience is said to be well recognised and where he is highly regarded.. He has insisted that he will stand again in the constituency at the election but even if he had decided on a different option he could make no public announcement until after his budget speech. Only then would he be free to make an announcement if he saw his future outside the Dail. The choices facing the Wexford TD who is 60 years old next birthday are fairly stark----------a rewarding position at a European institution or a bruising election campaign where the best prize he could hope for would be a very much reduced role in the Dail as part of a very small Labour Parliamentary Party. For the most successful and influential Wexford politician of his generation decision day looms.

Cycle Against Suicide

www.hoganprint.com 053 92 34359

Cycle Against Suicide Ambassador, Vincent Byrne is bringing the message “It’s ok not to feel ok and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help” into the workplace, on Wednesday 9th September. Cycle Against Suicide is an initiative started by Irish entrepreneur, Jim Breen, as a result of his appearance on RTE’s The Secret Millionaire programme. The main objective is to raise awareness of the considerable help and supports that are available for anyone battling depression, self harm, at risk of suicide or those bereaved by suicide. The Cycle Against Suicide community is determined to let people in every corner of the island of Ireland know that; it’s OK not to feel OK and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help. Together, shoulder to shoulder, we can break the cycle of suicide on the island of Ireland. Earlier this year, Vincent Byrne ran 50km, from Clonmel to Mitchelstown with Jim Breen and also ran from Ballymena to Belfast on the

eve of the two week cycle. He then participated in the 14 day cycle around Ireland taking this message into schools, communities and homes. During the cycle Vincent wrote a Facebook blog each day which had a very broad reach and was at times a very open, honest and emotional

exploration of mental health issues. Recently it was decided to organise “Events Against Suicide” during National Suicide Prevention Week between the 7th and 13th September. “I am very anxious to have the simple but powerful message of Cycle Against Suicide heard in the workplace”, Vincent said this

week announcing his event for National Suicide Prevention Week on the Ray D’Arcy RTE 1 radio show. “On Wednesday 9th September during National Suicide Prevention Week I intend running from my office in Rosslare Harbour to Wexford and Johnstown Castle, linking up with Civil/Public Service Offices and Departments. I hope to present a framed copy of our message “It’s ok not to feel ok and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help” at each office. Hopefully this will be placed in a prominent position in the workplace”. Vincent said. “The workplace is one place where we might be very reluctant to stand up and, from an emotional wellbeing point of view, and say ‘I am not feeling ok and I need some help’ and “I wonder, how many of us who manage people in the workplace would know what to do if someone did?” Plans are being made for the framed posters to be accepted in the workplaces and quite a number of people have pledged to join Vincent in all or part of his run. Vincent expressed his sincere gratitude

to David Morrissey of Wexford Picture Framing for sponsoring the frames and framing of the posters. He is encouraging the workplaces he is visiting to organise their own events in that week, perhaps a display of information from the Mental Health organisations working in the Wexford area. Vincent will leave the port of Rosslare Harbour and Central Vehicle Office at 10am, heading to Anne Street Wexford to the Office of the Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Social Protection, heading to Carricklawn to Wexford County Council HQ and the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government, and onwards to Teagasc, the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Agriculture and Food in Johnstown Castle Estate. “People are welcome to join me for the run or any part of it. We should be en route between the most of the offices during the lunch period”.

Tickets selling fast for the Spiegeltent Festival The Wexford Spiegeltent Festival is proving to be very popular with audiences, with 4 shows already sold out and several more with limited availability. Albert Hammond, Bell X1, Steve Earle & the Dukes are sold out as is Dylan Moran’s Saturday night show. The Festival organisers have added a second Dylan Moran show on Sunday 18th October. Several other shows including The Stunning, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Jack L and Al Porter are selling very well and customers are advised to book early to avoid disappointment. There is an excellent array of local talent in the programme this year, including Corner Boy, the South Sea Collective and the Wexford Male Voice Choir. South Sea is a musical collective in Wexford that was originally formed with the common goal of staging shows in unique and secret locations around the county.

On October 20th, six acts will combine their efforts and stage a collaborative night of original music on a single stage. The acts include Basciville, Callum Orr, Dan Comerford, Paul Creane & The Changing Band, Paula Cox & The Man Whom. The Wexford Male Voice Choir with Special Guests the RHAWADER Choir from Wales will perform a lunchtime concert at this year’s Spiegeltent Festival. Wexford Male Voice Choir was founded by Dr. George Hadden in 1941 and is now believed to be the longest established Male Voice Choir in Ireland. Hundreds of Wexford men have passed through its’ ranks since then and the Choir has continued to grow and develop over the years, mainly due to the commitment of its members and the support of the people of Wexford. Over the years the Choir has performed in Concerts and Competitions all over Ireland, as well as in England

and Wales. In 2001 we had the privilege of singing in Boston, U.S.A. and in March 2002 the Choir was honoured to sing at the first ‘Official’ St. Patrick’s Day Mass in Westminster Cathedral, London and then to perform at a Concert in Trafalgar Square, that afternoon, to an audience of over 50,000. Following two sellout shows in the Spiegeltent last year, local heroes Corner Boy return to headline the 2015 Festival. Playing their first ever show at the Other Voices Derry music trail in February 2013, Corner Boy have gone on to perform at some of the biggest festivals in the country including Electric Picnic, Westport Festival, Indiependence and Knockanstockan. Friends from the farmlands of rural Wexford, unusually emigration was the spark that ignited the flame bringing the five members of Corner Boy together. Having left Irish shores for Canada, lead singer Michael returned home revitalised after immersing

himself in the vibrant Montreal music scene. On his return the five friends joined forces to form Corner Boy. Corner Boy’s music blends together traditional Irish instruments and folk progressions with contemporary musical themes. Their style gently nods to Northern American folk and layers each tune with soaring vocal harmonies. All of which gives Corner Boy its distinctly energetic sound juxtaposed with a haunting narrative. The Festival runs for 13 days and nights and the eclectic programme of events features contemporary music, comedy, theatre, film, classical music and burlesque. Highlights of this years programme include Bell X1, Steve Earle & The Dukes, The New Triangle, Dylan Moran, The Stunning, Al Porter, Jack L and Delorentos. The 2015 Festival runs from Wednesday 14th to Monday 26th October.

MABS Wexford helps with mortgage problems The new role for MABS in the area of mortgage difficulties was announced nationally this week and while it is an evolving process it will be of major benefit to those in mortgage difficulties who are willing to engage with lenders with the support of a national, free and highly experienced organisation. While Wexford is not listed in the release as having a DMA (Dedicated Mortgage Arrears) Advisor in the first instance our citizens will have access to the service with new posts in the process of being filled. The Wexford MABS service has used its own limited staff resources over the past few months to ensure a presence at mortgage case hearings in the local court and this will continue in tandem with the DMA service. If you are in mortgage arrears and have a court date pending it is very important that you attend. Accepting that such attendance may be an ordeal our staff member will be available to support and explain matters if required. Legally MABS cannot represent a client in court but it has been found that moral support can alleviate a lot of the stress. Mortgage cases can be complicated and MABS never promises a quick fit solution because there usually isn’t one. But Wexford MABS will assist and support you in any way possible with realistic advice and experience built up over more than two decades. If you are in mortgage difficulties without a pending court

appearance we would urge you to contact MABS to discuss your options and through assistance and support hopefully come to an arrangement that makes a traumatic court appearance unnecessary. While offering this mortgage advice and providing a local Debt Relief Notice service through the Insolvency legislation we continue to offer a full and holistic service in dealing with money worries and problems from personal loans through utility bill difficulties and the myriad other financial worries that can beset anyone in our society. No one deliberately gets into debt but when it comes it can be a devastating blow to a person, a relationship or a family. The more careful you have been in the past the more stressful debt appears. But you do not have to face it alone. Wexford MABS has assisted people in the county for almost 20 years and the most uplifting phrase we constantly hear is that “facing up to this has lifted a huge burden”. If you feel that money worries are causing stress or even just minor irritation why not talk for free to a confidential, trained and experienced money adviser who will treat you with respect, empathy and in a non-judgemental fashion to assist you in confronting and overcoming the problem. MABS is a free, professional, independent service for those requesting assistance with budgeting, devising offers and dealing with creditors. In Wexford you can contact us on 0761 072780 (an odd number but it DOES reach us)

Ruben Espinosa, photojournalist. His murder has brought international attention back onto the plight of journalists in Mexico Sadly, Freedom of Speech isn’t always a guarantee. It’s as dependent on time, place, and who’s in charge as much as anything else. The recent cases of murder of journalists in Mexico prove this beyond a shadow of a doubt. The most famous name of the journalists recently murdered in Mexico is Ruben Espinosa, but he is not the only one. (Ruben Espinosa was a photojournalist killed in the neighbourhood of Narvarte in Mexico City, on the 1st of August. He was killed along with Activist Nadia Vera and bystanders Alejandra Negrete, Yesenia Quiroz, and Mile Virginia.) In the month of August this year alone, 3 other prominent Mexican journalists have been killed in suspicious circumstances, their names are Adrian Martinez Lopez (another photojournalist), Juan Manuel Calderon Garcia, and Juan Heriberto Santos. It is said that Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to be a journalist, with more than 100 journalists or people who work in the media having been killed or missing since 2000. Most of these crimes remain unsolved or unpunished, some would say deliberately so. The statistic that 90 per cent of the murders of journalists since 1992 in Mexico, have occurred without anyone being punished for the crimes, would seem to support this theory. There are currently online petitions to make the Mexican government do more to protect those who work in the media. There is some debate about who the perpetrators of these murders are. While a lot of these killings can be attributed to the Mexican Drug Cartels, who are willing to kill

anyone that would report on their activities, they don’t seem to be the only ones involved in these crimes. Corrupt politicians in Mexico who don’t want their corruption or involvement with Drug Cartels to be reported on, are often suspected to be the ones that order such killings, but since the Mexican government is hesitant to be open about such matters and journalists can end up dead for investigating anything of this nature, it’s hard to know for definite the extent of this problem. This idea holds more weight when you consider the fact that Ruben Espinosa did not report on drug cartels crimes, but he was reporting on the protests by Mexican students over the disappearance of 43 student teachers in the State of Guerrero in the month of September last year. The protesters believe that these disappeared people were in fact murdered and these murders were covered up. Ruben Espinosa had been receiving death threats for his work as far back as 2012 and had moved to Mexico City during June this year, as Mexico City has traditionally been a safe haven from violence for journalists in Mexico. Currently, none of the culprits have been identified in the Ruben Espinosa case. Hopefully, more information will come out and justice will be done, but if members of the local government are behind it as many already suspect, then it looks like the truth will remain suppressed, and the status quo in Mexico will remain the same.

Home Renovation Incentive Scheme

Time running out for those wishing to avail of government’s tax back scheme There have been very few ways of getting money back from the government in recent years, in fact all the movement has been in the opposite direction. However, an exception to

this has been the Home Renovation Incentive Scheme (HRI) which was introduced by Minister Michael Noonan toward the end of 2013. It has enabled thousands

of people to claim tax back on the money they spent for renovations and improvements to their homes and has been a tremendous success. It was designed to provide a kick start to the construction industry which fell into a state of collapse during the recession and it has enabled many homeowners to have work carried out which they had put off for a number of years. Homeowners can claim back a maximum of

just over €4,000 under the scheme but time is running out for those who want to avail of it because it runs out at the end of the current year-----------so you would need to get cracking with renovations to qualify for the payback. The incentive applies to work carried out on a main home or rental property by qualifying contractors. The amount of relief available to taxpayers depends on the amount spent on qualifying works and the tax relief can

be claimed on anything spent over €4,405. This total does not have to be on a single job but can be made out of various works in a house. While there is no upper limit on qualifying works, the tax relief is only

provided on works up to €30,000. The relief is available to both owner occupiers of a main home or Landlords of rental properties who pay tax under PAYE or self assessment.

Home Renovation Incentive Scheme

From new roofs to new kitchens, bathroom upgrades to painting and decorating works range of works qualify under the Incentive The Home Renovation Incentive Scheme applies to a wide range of repair works, renovations and improvements and provides an ideal opportunity for people to avail of government cash to help them carry out works around their home. All types of regular works from painting and decorating to rewiring and tiling qualify for the relief. But it also applies to major renovations and the building of an extension, so if your family has outgrown your current accommodation now is the time to add that extra bedroom. It could also be used, for example, to build a garage to protect your car in winter or to fit solar panels to help reduce energy costs. If you fancy adding a

conservatory to your home, that work is also covered Also on the list of approved works is landscaping so now might be the time to transform the area around your home into a garden heaven. Plastering and plumbing associated with any work around the house are included. For those looking to upgrade their home, bathroom refurbishments are covered, so too are the supply and fitting of built in wardrobes and the supply and fitting of kitchens. With the onset of winter many people will be looking at their heating systems and energy conservations. The supply and fitting of windows and doors is covered while central heating system repairs and upgrades are also included. And for the security

conscious the supply and fitting of alarms is also fully allowable under the scheme. Of interest to people living in rural areas and away from main drainage schemes will be the fact that repairs and upgrades of sceptic tanks also qualify. The repair and upgrade of driveways is also included and the cost of an attic conversion is also allowable. In effect virtually every type of repair, renovation or upgrade you could think of for your home comes under the scheme.

And if one piece of work does not get you over the minimum threshold to claim back tax it is important to remember that you can include several jobs carried out during

the qualifying period, which is from October 2013, add the total cost of them together and they may bring you over the qualifying mark. In fact if you are currently

Some simple ways to give your home a new look Bright colours You know a colour trend is firmly back in the arena when Farrow & Ball produce a corresponding paint. This bright yellow, 'Yellowcake No.279' was inspired by the bold yellow used in Sixties homes. For many years post we would have balked at the idea of using the shade but now, we love! Go crazy. Bean Bags Throughout our teenage years beanbags were as ubiquitous as inflatable armchairs, and then we grew up and no longer wanted to sit on a bag of beans on the floor. But, they're back! In a far chicer form and let's face it, they're still rather useful Fake Foliage Once upon time the idea of having fake plants in your house was deemed, well, a bit naff, but now, largely because the quality of faux foliage has

vastly improved, they're en vogue. So whether it's silk orchids in the bathroom, paper hydrangeas in the fireplace or an artificial bamboo plant in the living room, anything goes. That friendly neighbour need never have a spare key - unless you have a cat. Always feed the cat Chintzy Lamps The chintzy fringed lampshade has had a modern, urban makeover and is now firmly on our wish list. Look to House of Hackney for cool prints in soft greys or hot pinks; this one's going straight on the bedside table. Rattan furniture Rattan furniture may have been big in the 60s and 70s but then it seemed relegated to dated conservatories and old people's homes. Now we're all rather in love with it again. Scour vintage shops for

the geniune article or pick up a marvellous modern equivalent like this collection from Habitat. Folk textiles Folk textiles never disappeared in the most bohemian of homes, but for most, they were out and chic neutrals were in. Now there's nothing to say you can't combine the two, whether it's paisley prints, crochet, or accents of jewel colours. We're jumping back on the hippy trail. Cupboards around the bed Cupboards around the bed? You're thinking as practical as that may be it's a bit dated, right? Not when you take your lead from chic bespoke storage comme รงa. We've been seeing it everywhere, without a Teasmade in sight. Avocado bathroom suites

No!' we hear you say. Yes. The dreaded suites we once maniacally ripped out of bathrooms the minute we moved in are back. And don't they look good? The key is, avocado on the outside, white on the inside. We've learned our lesson there All out prints If a decade ago an interior designer had suggested prints, prints and more prints, we would have shivered at the thought. Then along came House of Hackey and suddenly, an explosion of chintzy print suddenly looked pretty cool.

8 Warning Signs That Your A solid roof above your head is pretty crucial if you've become accustomed to having a warm, cozy, and leak-free home. Here's how to notice and deal with potential issues before they become big ones.

of Home Inspectors. "If you have a 40-year-old roof, there could be a problem — even if it looks good from the ground." Advertisement - Continue Reading Below How much time you've got left: Five to 10 years, depending on your roof's condition. If you live in a development and your neighbors are all starting to replace their roofing, that could be a sign that you should do the same. 2. The shingles are curling.

1.Your roof's 25th birthday is approaching. "An asphalt shingle roof should last between 20 and 30 years," says Claude McGavic, executive director of The National Association

Shingles can curl in two ways: There's cupping, which happens when the edges of the shingles turn upward; and there's clawing, which is when the edges

stay flat and the middle starts to come up. "Both are signs of weathering and indicate that problems — potentially leaks — are relatively close to fruition," says Mark Graham, vice president of the National Roofing Contractors Association. 3. Entire shingles are missing. From a functional standpoint, there should be no problem with just replacing a few shingles here and there. "What you do need to be prepared for is the fact that it's just about impossible to get a new shingle to match the color of an old one," says Graham. "Granule colors have changed pretty significantly over the years. Plus, the colors change slightly with weathering." How much time you've got left: You can keep patching until a bigger issue presents itself, but if a roof starts to look like a

checkerboard, people often opt to replace the whole thing. 4. The shingles are cracked. Cracked shingles are typically a result of wind damage. If just a few shingles are cracked, you can certainly replace them. "If the cracking isn't isolated to one particular area and it's random throughout the roof, that's a telltale sign that you should start thinking about a new roof," says Graham. How much time you've got left: You may need to replace the whole thing within three to five years. 5. You're finding granules in the gutter. If you just got a new asphalt shingle roof and you see a bunch of granules in the gutters, there's nothing to

worry about: Those are just loose, extra ones. But if it's been 10 or 15 years, that's a sign of a bigger problem. "Granules help keep the sun off the asphalt," says McGavic. "Once the granules fall off and the shingles start to bake, the quality will deteriorate in a hurry." How much time you've got left: If you don't have a new roof and you just started to notice the granules in the gutter, the shingles are probably halfway through their lifespan, McGavic estimates.

6. The shingles are covered with moss or algae. Okay, this is actually no reason to panic. "It's just a cosmetic issue," says McGavic. People may choose to replace the roof just because they don't like the aesthetic (and a lot of new shingles are algae-resistant). Whatever you do, don't take matters into your own hands by power washing or scraping away at the green stuff. "That's a good way to chip off all the granules, which again, essentially renders your shingles useless."

If you do decide to replace your roof, consider tiles that are algaeresistant, like GAF Timberline roofs, a Good Housekeeping Seal holder.

might make it wise (and cost efficient) to replace your roof sooner rather than later

the attic or, worse, with the supports in the foundation. "You're not necessarily in imminent danger, but this is the kind of thing that's a lot easier to take care of when it's small and localized, than when it has progressed." How much time you've got left: Not much, if you do nothing. If you see a depression or a droop, call in an expert as soon as you can.

8. The entire roof is sagging. This is when you should panic. "A sagging roof is typically an indication of a structural issue," explains Graham. There could be a problem with the decking in

7. You can see sunlight from your attic. You don't need us to tell you that this isn't a good sign … because it's not! If light can get in, so can rain, cold air, and snow. Check for light and also look for water stains. "If you find any, watch them over a few rainfalls and if they change shape or size, that means you've got an active leak," says McGavic. How much time you've got left: It depends on the extent of the damage, so call a pro. Small leaks can be patched, but larger ones, structural damage, and the age factor

GER WALSH Gorey benefits as the recovery moves down the country There has been a lot of talk about whether or not the recession is over with all the statistics indicating that the recovery is well and truly under way and the government pointing time and again to the fact that things are getting better. On the other side of the fence there are those who insist that the recovery is only benefiting the select few and the argument goes that it has not spread throughout the country at all. Indeed it seems that there are some people in public life and at the head of various organisations who would prefer to see an endless depression because it is depression and despair which provides a fertile environment for their activities and advancement. In the same way some others see corruption and wrongdoing around every corner and will not be convinced otherwise because that’s what provides the platform for the advancement of their cause.

That is not to suggest that there is not corruption or that the harsh effects of the recession are still not being felt by many individuals and communities. But the reality is that things are beginning to get better and the uplift is not just happening in Dublin, it is slowly beginning to roll out across the country and into county Wexford. It is easy to point to difficulties that still exist in the health services, the homeless crisis and other issues, but many of these problems existed when the country was awash with money during the Celtic Tiger years. The recovery is patchy, there is no doubt about that, and the types of jobs which are coming on stream are not of the full time permanent pensionable variety that we were all once used to. But there are more jobs, more businesses are opening up and the Main Streets in all our towns are busier.

Gorey is probably the best example in the county of where the recovery really has taken hold. I was in the town over a couple of weekends recently and I was really struck by the large number of people around and the level of business being enjoyed by town centre traders. There were queues to get into several restaurants and cafes and everywhere appeared to be busy. Perhaps it is the town’s proximity to Dublin, and with the new road through Wicklow it is now closer to Dublin than ever, but it certainly seems to be leaving the woes of the recession well and truly behind. This increase in business and generally improved economic climate in the town will undoubtedly trickle down to lift all boats in the months ahead. However, at the moment there are those who probably do not feel that their particular boat is being lifted because Gorey does have a severe shortage of

housing and many people are struggling to find accommodation. This is the next area which needs tackling and a more comprehensive housing plan than we have seen to date will be necessary if the problem is to be eased within a reasonable time frame. No doubt the various parties will have much to say about the issue over the next few months but a sceptical public will be slow to buy any of their promises given the recent history surrounding political promises in this country. But whatever the promises, the reality is that things are getting better and towns like Gorey are beginning to march forward again. That is a big improvement on where we were six years ago when for a few awful months it appeared as if there wouldn’t be a shop, restaurant or pub left in the county.

No appreciation for the magic of Billy Walsh There is a great old saying that when one door shuts another opens and often the one that opens provides the path to something much better than the one that was closed in your face. I think that is certainly true of Billy Walsh who is in a position to put the hassle of dealing with the Irish Boxing authorities behind him if they don’t start treating him fairly and giving him proper recognitiion for his achievements as a result of being offered a post in the United States.. For some inexplicable reason Billy has not been given the recognition he absolutely deserves as a result of his achievements with the Irish Boxing squad, Indeed there are those who would suggest that he has

been shamefully treated by those in charge. The thing is that in terms of the Olympics Walsh’s charges were by far the most successful in the Irish Squad so it is difficult to understand why the officials were not falling at his feet. In any event not only were they not falling at his feet but they were essentially insulting him and the only surprise is that the Wexford man took it for so long. Now if he is off to the United States I am sure he will make a great success of his efforts over there and if he does the Americans will not be slow to recognise his achievement. The only thing that concerns me is how the Yanks will take to Billy’s sharp Wexford accent. Good luck Billy.

Rural Garda Stations will never reopen The tragic death of John O’Donoghue from a heart attack when he discovered that his home had been burgled in Limerick has once again brought the question of rural policing to the top of the agenda. One national newspaper even screamed from its front page that Mr O’Donoghue’s death was the tragic price being paid for the closure of a rural garda station in his area. This screaming sensationalist headline of course had more to do with trying to sell copies of that particular newspaper than making any sensible contribution to the debate about rural policing. My own views on rural garda stations are well known and they have not changed in recent years. Having a building with a sign on it saying ‘Garda’ is really little use to rural dwellers who are concerned about crime. Sure it might make them feel more relaxed in the mistaken belief that the station actually provides security but in reality having a station without fully equipping it with technology, transport and an adequate

number of Gardai is a sort of a con job. There are those who argue for more rural Garda Stations and no doubt some politicians and political parties will make promises on the reopening of rural garda stations during the course of the election campaign. Those promises will in fact be an insult to the people of rural Ireland who are living in fear as a result of the type of hysteria which is being generated at the moment on rural crime. There is no doubt that rural crime is a problem but it is not out of control to the extent that it is being protrayed in some sections of the media or by some politicians and you probably have as much chance of finding gold at the end of a rainbow as seeing a rural garda station reopened any time some. Unless we are going to get back to having five or six Gardai attached to a rural village Garda Station living in that community, playing sports with the local teams, and cycling around the parish getting to know everyone you are not going to provide the

The Patron Day has been ruined for some communities type of certainly and comfort that people believe they can achieve by having a Garda Station in their area. Typically now Gardai do not live in the area in which they are stationed so the notion that they would get to know everyone in the local area and be found playing cards on a Tuesday night in the local pub is simply nonsense. So these calls for reopening of rural stations are simply fairytale stuff. That is not to say or suggest that rural policing is adequate. It is not. But then many would feel that urban policing is not adequate either We need more Gardai and we need them sensibly

deployed with the proper resources and the latest technology. We should have dedicated rural patrols that are not pulled from their duties to support and replace town units on a busy Saturday night. More Gardai and more resources to ensure that they can be effective in their fight against the criminals will cost money and that money has to come from taxation. As more people go back to work and the tax take increases some resources will be available to employ more Gardai and to equip them better and that should certainly be part of the programme for the next government.

The annual Patron Day is a really significant occasion for communities all over the county. Right through the summer months people travel from all parts of the country and beyond to attend their local patrons and in rural parishes in particular they are a great occasion for family gatherings and for people to have an annual meeting. It is a great tradition and one which has much to recommend it. However, in some parts of the county, particularly in some urban areas, the Patron Day is not what it once was. In the larger urban areas, for example, only a small fraction of people now attend the graves of their loved ones on Patron Day. Instead they visit the

previous day or the day after and that whole sense of community is lost. They have not changed their habits by choice, but sadly by necessity. In some places the patron days have literally been taken over by groups of people who have no regard for anyone but themselves. They refuse to obey parking regulations, abuse other patron goers and use parts of the cemetery as public toilets. I am not going to label these people for fear of having some do-gooder taxpayer funded organisation seek to have me muzzled, but it is a real pity that the activities of these people have ruined a traditional family day for so many Wexford people.

Don’t have a heart attack at weekends I see where research over a thirteen year period in the UK has shown that if you have a heart attack at the weekend you are much more likely to die than if it happens during the week. In fact Saturday is the worst day of the week to have a heart attack in the UK with a 19% greater chance that you will die from the attack than if it was suffered Monday to Friday.

The situation on Sundays is not much better and the problem is that more people suffer heart attack out of hours, that is outside 9 to 5 and at weekends, than face the problem during the normal working week. The research was carried out exclusively in the UK but I assume the results would not be much different in Ireland

which is why I believe people should avoid any strenuous activity at weekends, particularly anything which might bring on an attack like doing jobs around the house or in the garden. It’s the perfect excuse. Incidentally, a person suffers a heart attack in the UK every three minutes. Just another piece of useless information for you.

A lawyer in the case said it had created a precedent. No doubt it has.

Oh Enda, oh Enda! Enda Kenny says he was surprised when the Garda Commissioner resigned after he sent a senior civil servant to his house close to mid-night to tell in he might not be able to express confidence in him the following morning. That’s a bit like a child kicking a ball straight at window and then expressing surprise to his mother that the glass smashed. But you could make an excuse for an innocent child, they’d say

anything to avoid the wrath of an angry parent. But Enda, oh Enda who are you trying to fool. To me it appears the only one he is actually fooling is himself. Of course he wanted the Garda Commissioner gone, and you know what, in that regard he was almost certainly right.

What’s On Charolais, Wexford Arts Centre, September 10, 8 p.m. Fans of theatre will be heading straight for Wexford Arts Centre on Thursday night to laugh it up at a hilariously funny black comedy. 'Charolais' is an age old tale of female rivalry with a new twist: the other woman is cow, a literal one, a purebred Charolais heifer. Siobhan’s boyfriend is a farmer who devotes considerable

attention to his prize heifer at the expense of his very pregnant girlfriend. Siobhan has developed a homicidal jealousy for this Charolais and is feeling equally murderous towards her snobbish soon-to-be mother in law. A dark comedy of love and longing: rarely in Irish theatre are the challenges of farming life and the joy of sex

expressed so frankly or with such charm. The whole show is written and performed by the incredibly talented Noni Stapleton and is directed by Bairbre Ni Chaoimh. Tickets are selling fast, but a small amount are still available from www.wexfordartscentre.ie or by calling 053 912 3764

Canonball finish line, Wexford Quayfront, September 13, 6 p.m. On Sunday September 13th 2015 Cannonball arrives to Wexford at 6pm where spectators can get up close and personal with 180 of the finest cars on the planet until 7.30pm and then enjoy the unique festival atmosphere that Cannonball is renowned for. Soap stars Ryan Thomas from Coronation St and Adam Thomas from Emmerdale will be joining celebrity cannonballers this year and some of the most unique cars in the world are being shipped in for the event this year. The gleaming convoy will drive through

820KM of Irish open roads through Dublin, Leitrim, Sligo, The Wild Atlantic Way, Killaloe, Killarney, Cahir and finishing in Wexford. A quarter of the supercars are coming in from the UK, Europe and even Dubai with the highest ever number of top mark cars worth an estimated €23 million including McLaren, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Masseratti, Rolls Royce and Bentley. New in 2015 are the Pagani Zonda, Keonigsegg and Carrera GT. These are 3 of the most unique cars in the

world with a combined value of €4 million. Some of the novelty cars on Cannonball this year include an authentic Delorean complete with Doc and Marty McFly, An NYPD Car with full kit, Smokey and the Bandit Truck, The Ghostbusters Sheriff car and a most unusual Top Gun inspired car. The whole event aims to raise money for the Make A Wish foundation and it looks set to be a great atmosphere. For more details of routes and events, visit www.cannonball.ie.

Mary Coughlan, Wexford Arts Centre, September 12, 8.30 p.m. Jazz and folk singer extraordinaire Mary Coughlan will perform an intimate live show at Wexford Arts Centre on September 12. In an age where there seems to be no such thing as lastibility in the music business, Mary is still holding her own. Kick-starting her career back in 1984, she is still going strong and

Culture night will see hundreds of free events taking place all over the country. In Wexford, you can catch some of the finest talent the county has to offer at a special cabaret at Wexford Arts Centre. In a celebration of Wexford's culture and creativity, the Arts Centre will host an eclectic mix of local artists taking to the stage with drama, music and comedy from 9 p.m. Culture Night has grown from a relatively small scale cultural event in 2006 to the significant national cultural event it now is, with some 350,000 people visiting museums, galleries, historic houses, artists’ studios and

Under 21s face tough test against Limerick a Limerick point of view you would have to say that they probably fancy their chances of dealing with the Wexford challenge. They will probably say if they play to their potential and stick to a game plan then the title is theirs. From a Wexford point of view the picture is a little different. Our boys will know it will take a mighty effort on their part to overcome this Limerick outfit. They will know that they will have to take every single opportunity they are presented with and work very hard off the ball to unsettle this Limerick team. Wexford have a big physical team and some very

cultural centres across the country. The initiative has captured both the public imagination and the enthusiasm of artists and cultural organisations and

Wexford Arts Centre are hoping that the Wexford event will be more successful than ever! For more details visit www.wexfordartscentre.ie.

At local championship level we are down to the quarter finals. So how will they go?

The man who gets behind the sports headlines

performance is the one thing that casts a bit of a shadow over Wexford because in their semi final Limerick were really impressive as they have been in all their games to date and on the evidence of what we have seen so far the Shannonsiders will go into the game as favourites. Wexford have been very successful at this level under the management of J J Doyle and his backroom team, winning three Leinsters in a row. However, they have come up that little bit short on the All Ireland stage so they will be hoping that they can go one better this year. Looking at the game from

unforeseen, sudden seduction. This is why she is so loved. Mary is looking forward to performing for a Wexford audience once again and tickets are now on sale for €20 from www.wexfordartscentre.ie or by calling the box office at 053 912 3764.

LARRY O’GORMAN Well all roads lead to Thurles this weekend as our Under 21 hurlers go in to battle for the All Ireland Crown. Only Limerick stand between our lads and a day of glory. Wexford had really been In great form and looked mighty impressive all the way up to the semi final but that game against Antrim fell a bit flat as far as Wexford were concerned. Of course they easily disposed of the northerners without playing well and it is often the case that a performance can fall a bit flat when the opposition do not present a great challenge. That semi-final

entertaining crowds all over Ireland and the world. Singing jazz and blues and vocally marrying her sardonic wit, visceral rage, orgiastic between the sheets passion and the tenderest of sorrowful regrets- this is Mary’s talent. Regardless of the elements she chooses to manipulate with flawless ease, Mary’s voice has always been an

classy hurlers and they will have to use these assets to the full. Limerick will be looking for their big stars to perform on the day, the likes of Ronan Lynch, Darragh O’Donovan, David Byrnes, and Cian Lynch, while Wexford will be looking to Conor McDonald, Liam Ryan, Kevin Foley and Conor Devitt to lead from the front and you know what if all fifteen players give it their best on the day there is no reason Wexford cannot go one better this year. The lads will have great support on the day and I certainly wish them all the luck they deserve.

Faythe Harriers V Cloughbawn: This is a hard one to call. Even though Cloughbawn are playing well The Harriers are capable of putting it up to anyone on their ‘good’ days and I expect the townies to sneak through this encounter. Oulart/The Ballagh V St Annes: At this moment Oulart are hot favourites and by all accounts they are hurling well as a team. On the other hand St. Anne’s will not fear Oulart one bit and if there is a team left in the championship that can topple the big boys it has to be St. Anne’s. Glynn/Barntown V Buffers Alley: This is yet another hard one to call. The Alley go into the game with a good win under their belts having seen off the Shels and they would have to be slight favourites here. On the

other hand a young Glynn side will be fired up for this and they could just come away with a win. St. Martin’s V Shelmaliers: Both teams got beaten in the last round of the championship but if St. Martin’s are at full strength I would fancy them to go through. Well where did the summer go! What summer you might say, wasn’t it terrible but for a few good hurling matches and some wonderful strawberries we wouldn’t have realised it was summer at all. I think there was warmer weather In February or maybe I am just imagining that. Anyway with the kids back at school and the All Ireland out of the way it’s well and truly over--------the summer that never was. It will soon be time for us to go into hibernation for the real winter. See you folks.

Soccer is Back!!!

Most men love August/September for one reason and one reason only….. Soccer is back and they are hoping to see their team do well for the season ahead. The Transfer Window shut last week with a desperately badly run - clubs trying to sort deals out last minute, panicking and throwing millions at random players ie. Manchester Utd … the whole thing reminds me of an old drunk man in a strip club with 10 minutes remaining to closure and the old man, of course, being LVG (their manager). They bought a random player who is supergood on the PC game Football Manager. Obviously LVG is a big fan of the game as nothing the player in question, Martial, has done in real life can justify his enormous transfer fee and make him become the most expensive teenager in world football and overtake the overweight pie-lover Luke Shaw as the most expensive player in British football.

money which is pushing the value of every other average footballer up as well which is having a negative effect on every other club who don’t have the same financial backing as Utd . Yes, you can say Man City are spending way too much also but they are buying world class players unlike Manchester Utd who are spending millions on players who play against Tombrack’s second team week in week out over in the rubbish French league.

gone by. In my view that is the way to run a club..

Moyes: Played: Played 50 Won 27 Spent €90Million

There was uproar from the unknowledgeable deluded United faithful when David Moyes bought Fellani and

That figure speaks volumes and not just in terms of money It just goes to show not only are United a bit clueless but the whole board at United are just as bad. In my opinion they have always been a very average club except for having one of the greatest managers football has ever seen, Sir Alex Ferguson.. He single handily turned a struggling Manchester Utd to the best team in the world and won a treble in 1999. Even in his last season at Old Trafford when managing an extremely average group of players he won the league with something to spare which proved how important he was. Since the day he left the club Manchester United have turned into the Titanic of football, some could argue they’re the new Leeds Utd; desperately throwing cash at players who have no interest in playing for the club. I’m sure the Asian community who travel long distances to fill Old Trafford are devastated by the goings on.

TUNE OF THE WEEK

Manchester Utd are single handily ruining football as we know it by buying very average teenagers for stupid

Other teams like Liverpool have some morals and integrity when it comes to transfers and their net spend has not been too high in transfer dealings in years

Juan Mata (Arguably their second best players last year) which saw #MoyesOut trend on Twitter daily but in fact if you compare the two managers It’s quite astonishing how they can be happy with the great LVG. LVG: Played 50 Won 27 Total Spent €342Million

Eoin Healy TUNE OF THE WEEK Feder – Goodbye Words can’t even describe how good this song is. Surely the favourite for a Grammy, recently voted the best song in the world by myself and Adam and well deserved at that. I play this in my DJ set for every occasion - from 18ths to 90ths everyone loves this tune. You’ve definitely heard it on Beat over the last few months, but we just can’t get enough of it! #Belter

#Throwback Throwback to 2002 when the greatest band of all time ‘Busted’ released one of the greatest albums you’ll ever hear featuring unbelievable songs like ‘What I go to school for’ ‘Year 3000’ & ‘You Said No’ still 13 years on I know every single word to every single song and I’m proud to say it was the second album I ever bought after the fantastic album by Dustin the Turkey. Myself and Adam even managed to throw ‘Year 3000’ into our sets over the grad season and as always, it went down a treat!

10 Tips for Freshers CAO offers are all finalised which means a new batch of freshers are about to arrive at colleges around the country. Most students have absolutely no idea what to expect and no doubt, they’ll end up making some rookie mistakes in the first few weeks. Here’s a list of a few do’s and don’ts to get you through your first semester: 1. Suppose I’ll get any serious tips about your course in first. Try actually going to

lectures. It sounds obvious, but your class numbers will drop every week until your sitting in a lecture hall by yourself because the lecturer hasn’t even bothered to turn up. Do SOME work and it makes it 100 times easier for you at exam time… apparently. 2. Everyone’s in the exact same boat as you so don’t freak out about not knowing anyone. Just go talk to a random stranger. If they’re a weirdo just move on to the next person. Repeat until you find someone who isn’t still obsessed with Wrestling or Pokemon. 3. Clubs and Societies are an unbelievable good way to meet new people with the same interest so definitely look them up and join some. Don’t go overboard and spend a million euro joining

every single one like I did in first year. That’s beer money and it’s precious. Join the ones you’re definitely going to go to and actually make an effort. There’s Clubs and Socs for everything! 4. Depending on where you’re going to college, your usual full McKenzie trackie probably isn’t going to cut it, so go buy some new clothes. Jeans and t shirts are safe. 5. Never pre drink with Buckfast. It’s the devil’s drink and unless it’s on sale, stay away. 6. Lads, pay for her taxi home the morning after. It’s the sound thing to do! But don’t part with one of your favourite hoodies because she tells you she’ll give it back. You’re NEVER gonna see her again! 7. If something’s free, get it. Money determines pretty much everything you do in college. The more free

samples you avail of in Tesco, the more you can do. Same goes from free pens, and everything else you can get for free. FREE STUFF!! 8. Assuming you’re living away from home, you’ll have a room-mate. To avoid hating each other, try be clean. 100% of room-mate fights happen because someone didn’t clean something. Do it.

9. I know I already mentioned pre drinks but it needs to be thrown in twice. As I said before, money’s fairly vital when it comes to going out. Pre drinks are your one chance to save money. €4 euro bottles of wine from Tesco were our best find last year. Scout around for the cheapest drink possible. Buy loads and loads and you won’t

have to worry about buying a drink in there because you probably won’t make it out. Problem solved. 10. Biggest tip I have is to do as much as you can. Get involved in everything, meet as many new people as you can, go out as much as you can. First year’s the best time to do it and if you don’t you’ll probably regret it.
