Mayor Carthy makes history The poll-topping Independent Councillor from last year's local elections, Ger Carthy, made history on Monday night when he became the first ever rural based Mayor of Wexford Borough District. Just twelve months after the reorganisation of local government saw the amalgamation of the town and district into one local authority area councillor Carthy has taken the Mayoral robes and announced a series of priorities aimed at tackling major issues in both the urban and country areas. At a time when there is increasing support for independents and others in opinion polls it is also significant that he is likely to be the only member of a non

establishment party to hold Office in any part of the county over the term of the current local authorities with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael set to take all other Chairmanships and Mayoralties between now and the next local elections in 2019. Following his election councillor Carthy pledged to take the Mayoralty to the people by going directly to the public to ask about the issues which are concerning them. He suggested that there was a 'them and us' feeling among the public about the Council and people had a difficulty understanding how money could be found for some things which they saw as unimportant while nothing

New Mayor's pledges Rates relief for small shops All day parking deal for workers Support for rural Post Offices Increased Garda patrols

could be found to fix a dangerous bend near their home, repair footpaths, fix public lighting or provide much needed houses. While there was a logic behind everything which the Council did there was a serious problem with communication and the Council needed to listen more to the concerns of the people and that's what he intended to do over the next few months. He said employment would be his priority during the term and he would be trying to find a way of reducing rates for small shops without benefiting multi-nationals and he announced a proposal to examine ways of providing free all day parking for rural dwellers working in Wexford town through the provision of a proper park and ride facility. He also hit out at the employment conditions endured by some people working for multi national retail outlets in the town and said the type of zero hours contracts offered meant that in some instances the workers involved would be better off on social welfare.

The new Mayor is to give his full backing to rural post offices and will be working to see increased garda patrols in rural areas. In co-operation with the recently elected Chair of Wexford Co. Council Tony Dempsey he will be seeking to ensure that proposed developments at Rosslare are undertaken with the protection of employment at the port and the creation of new jobs in the wider local economy as the top priority. Mr Carthy is the son of the late Cllr.Leo Carthy who served as a member of Wexford Co. Council for several decades and he dedicated his Mayoralty to the memory of his late father. Fine Gael councillor Jim Moore of Kilmore completed a rural takeover of the Mayoralty when he was elected Deputy Mayor. Independent Councillor Ger Carthy has been elected Mayor of Wexford Borough District

It’s mid summer, but Gorey unveils its impressive 2015 Christmas lights Less than a year ago they were accused of trying to kill Christmas---------at least kill off the Christmas spirit, but councillors in the Gorey Municipal District are determined not to be accused of falling down on the job when it comes to creating a festive atmosphere in the North Wexford town this festive

season. That's why they have been busy looking at Christmas lights and examining Christmas slogans while other people were preoccupied with choosing a destination for the summer holidays.. Now all the hard work behind the scenes is over and councillors have been

able to unveil spectacular images of what Gorey should look like in the run up to Christmas 2016. The old Christmas lighting which had been the talk of the county when it was first installed passed its sell by date just before last Christmas leading to delays in having the lights switched on as repairs were carried out. There followed intense criticism which stung councillors and officials and they set about ensuring there was no repeat even before the existing lights were switched off for the final time last January. After months of planning and examining

various options they have finally made a decision and their plans look set to transform Gorey into a winter wonderland next December. Apart from lights in trees, lanterns and big welcoming signs in key locations the plan is also to install a sound system in the town which will How Gorey’s Main Street will look next Christmas enable piped music to be played to add to District for the past year shortfall would be made up the festive spirit. put a lot of work into the while the new Chairman of The total cost of the lights plan, said businesses the Council, Malcolm project is €100,000 and were on board for the Byrne has said it was there is a €20,000 shortfall project and individual important that it was not which traders are to be business people had been left to the usual suspects in asked to make up. very supportive. the business community to John Hegarty, who as But he said it was now come up with the funding Chairman of the Municipal time to decide how the while others paid nothing.

Enniscorthy faces an uphill battle Enniscorthy is slipping down the league of shopping locations and could face real problems when the by-pass of the town is opened in a few years time. That's the big concern for those in charge of the town's promotion with an admission that the Enniscorthy has already slipped from the second shopping location in the county to the third or even

fourth. Local councillor James Browne sounded the alarm bells for the future of the town when he called for a detailed programme to promote it as a tourist destination with adequate signage to highlight the town's history and attractions. He told a meeting of the Municipal District Council that Enniscorthy had once

been the recognised second town in the county for shopping but had lost that position to Gorey and was in danger of falling back further if action was not taken to market the town in advance of the completion of the bypass. He said Enniscorthy was not just in competition with Wexford and Gorey but with Dundrum Town Centre

Calling for signage to promote areas of interest to tourists he specifically called for signs highlighting Eileen Grey and Colm Toibin’s connection with the town. There was support for his suggestion but Cllr Oliver Walsh said Colm Toibin spent a lot of time in Blackwater and maybe that should be highlighted too..

Cutting the ditches to get to the beach There has been a call for hedges to be cut back on rural roads leading to beaches. Roadside ditches can only be cut back on health and safety grounds during the summer months but busy routes leading to the seaside can be exempted because of the volume of traffic using the narrow

roads during the peak season. Councillor Frank Staples called for the cutting of the ditches on the road to Ballyhealy beach in South Wexford. He said farmers would be prepared to do it but were not allowed and the road was in danger of closing over during the course of the summer if it was not cut.

At a meeting of the Wexford Municipal District Council Cllr Ger Carthy asked when the gateway scheme would be extended to the rural parts of the district where he said there was a lot of minor works including cutting back ditches on dangerous bends which needed to be carried

out. He accepted that some councillors might be opposed to the Gateway scheme but it was the only means to have the work carried out at the moment.. Cllr Deirdre Wadding said she was totally opposed to the Gateway Scheme.

Donating your unwanted clothes………to who? When you place your unwanted clothes into the various collection bins around the county you probably assume that they make their way to the needy, either in Ireland or in some foreign land. However, that might not be the case, particularly if you use the facility at the old Dunne's Stores Car Park in the centre of Enniscorthy. For some time there has been concern about the amount of clothes seemingly dumped at the back of the bin in the car park. At one stage it was thought they were just thrown there by people using the bin. Now the real source of the problem has emerged. People searching for suitable items for themselves in the bins throw

away clothes they do not want. The searching of the bins takes place on a fairly organised basis with children being placed inside the bins to hand out clothes to waiting adults. They examine the items and either throw them to one side or pack them away.. Concerns over the practice were raised by councillors at a meeting of the Enniscorthy Municipal District Council.

Charity shops Charity Shops are the big growth business in Enniscorthy with a total of fourteen such outlets now operating in the town, a meeting of the local District Council heard.

And Councillor Johnny Mythen was told that all were exempted from rates and no planning regulations specifically governed the opening of a charity shop.

Easter 2016 plans take shape It may be still more than nine months away but plans are already well underway for the big celebrations to mark the centenary of 1916 in Enniscorthy next Easter. The fact that Ennisocrthy has been included as one of the few locations around the country as part of the national celebration means that the timeline for the events in the town will have to be synchronised with the events in other parts of the country. The day's celebrations in town on Easter Monday will

begin with 11am Mass in the Cathedral with a parade at mid-day from the Cathedral around the town to the Abbey Square where the reenactment will take place later. The day will see the first performance of a special song to mark the occasion as well as a specially written poem. The event is being moved from its traditional Easter Monday setting in Market Square to facilitate anticipated large crowds.

Going around the bend in Marshalstown They are going around the bend in Marshallstown--------the problem is they are doing it on the wrong side of the road. Now local councillor Kathleen Codd Nolan is concerned that a serious accident could happen on the bend in the village if something is not done to regulate traffic.

She suggested that the problem involved the lack of a white line to indicate to motorists the middle of the road and she asked for one to be painted. However, the difficulty is that if the road is not sufficiently wide at that point it will not be possible to pain a line dividing the two sides.

Problem Corner Dear Michelle Why is it that all the men I meet tell me they are only looking for something casual? I am in my mid 40’s, have been single for 3 years and really want to meet someone that I can have a long-term relationship with. Please help! Yours sincerely Mary Answer: Dear Mary This is something I hear a lot. Whilst you can’t change someone and what they want you can clearly state what it is you want from the beginning for example you could just ask the question “Are you open to the possibility of this developing into

something more because that is what I am looking for”. Be very specific and honest with yourself about what you are looking for and how it should be. Meeting someone new and getting to know them should be a natural easy fun process. It is really important to heal the past because if there is even a nugget of fear left from previous relationships then that is what will come into your life. Be aware of what you are telling yourself. If you keep thinking “All the men I meet are only looking for casual or all the good men are taken”, then guess what... Use positive affirmations in the present tense “I am grateful for the kind, loving, committed man that is in my life”. This

Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur Competition gets underway around the country, with €50,000 to be won by three local businesses. Three young enterprising people from Wexford can win a “game-changing” investment for their business, through Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur competition. That’s according to the Local Enterprise Office Wexford, which is rolling out the IBYE competition this month. The enterprising winners, who must all be aged between 18 and 30, will be awarded an investment prize of between €10,000 and €20,000 each to put straight into their business or to help fund a business idea. The competition is part of the Action Plan for Jobs and was launched last month by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny. T.D. and the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mr. Richard Bruton T.D. The closing date to enter online through www.ibye.ie is Friday, July 31st and the competition is only open to those aged between 18 and 30 with an existing business or with an idea for a new one. Minister Richard Bruton said: “The prizes involved can be game-changing for a new business. The investment can be used to buy a new piece of equipment for example or it can be used to help pay the salary of a new employee joining the team. The experience of last year’s IBYE winners shows the great benefit that this competition can bring. We have a growing number of entrepreneurs here in Ireland, but we don’t have enough of them. Through Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur competition, we’re encouraging more young people to consider setting up a business as a career choice and the supports on offer through IBYE can help them deliver on that”. The Local Enterprise Office Wexford has €50,000 to invest in three local businesses or start-ups. The three categories in the competition are: Best Idea (€10,000 investment prize), Best Start-Up (€20,000 investment prize) and Best Established Business (€20,000 investment prize). Last year’s county winners were: Ian Coleman (LifeBites) – Best Business Idea, Mark Whitney (Pillar Healthcare) – Best Start-Up, and Bláithín Ennis (Bláithín Ennis) – Best Established Business. Ian went on to represent #TeamWexford at the National Final held in

Dublin. In the 2014 IBYE competition, Philip Martin used his prize money to buy specialist machinery, helping him to open Ireland’s first tortilla-making factory in Tipperary (National Winner: 2014 Best Business Idea). The investment prize also helped Eamon Keane take on highly skilled staff at Xpreso Software in South Dublin (National Winner: 2014 Best Start Up Business/ Overall Winner). The funds also helped Dean Gammell from Westmeath to expand his group booking software business into the UK (National Winner: 2014 Best Established Business). In addition to investment prizes, additional supports are being offered to those entering, as Deirdre McGing, Enterprise Executive, from the Local Enterprise Office Wexford explains: “As well as three local winners, who will share the €50,000 investment fund, up to 500 young entrepreneurs and business owners will also be invited to take part in Business Bootcamps around the country, helping them finely tune their business plans and to learn new enterprise skills. One-to-one mentoring and business coaching will also be available, through all 31 Local Enterprise Offices. ” July 31st is the deadline to enter the competition through www.ibye.ie and there are no entry fees. Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland and the Local Enterprise Offices. Further competition details are available by searching #ibye on social media. For all queries around Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur Competition,

please contact your Local Enterprise Office. Interview opportunities are available with 2014 County Winners for #IBYE, along with representatives of the Local Enterprise Office. Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur 2015 (#IBYE) Website: www.ibye.ie (closing date to enter: July 31st 2015) Social Media: #IBYE Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur is a competition that is open to everyone with an innovative business idea • individuals • venture teams • partnerships • existing businesses with a new idea • people overseas (including Irish emigrants) who will headquarter in Ireland The competition is broken down into three categories: • Best New Idea (pretrading) • Best Start up Business (up to 24 months) • Best Established Business (over 24 months) Each Local Enterprise Office (LEO) is running a competition (July 31st closing date) aimed at finding winners in each of the three categories as well as an overall winner in each county. GER WALSH In praise of the man at Irish Rail Irish Rail is a company which is regularly the subject criticism from the public and usually it is very justified because they have an appalling record when it comes to customer service. It is only right, therefore, that a member of staff at the company be given praise when it is deserved. One evening last week I found myself at Wexford Rail station attempting to purchase a ticket for the following day’s early morning service to Dublin Why I had to go the station

to purchase a ticket is a bit of a story in itself. Irish Rail operates an Online ticket booking service and actually encourages people to buy their tickets on line by offering cheaper fares on the Web. Just don't try going Online to buy a ticket for the 5.59am service from Wexford to Dublin You just cannot purchase a ticket for this train on the Web. So off I went to the railway station in Wexford to pick up a ticket from the automatic ticket machine. The problem was that the machines are

housed in the waiting room at the station and it is locked after 6pm. This is necessary because of the terrible anti social behaviour which staff at the station have had to deal with in the past. Drug abuse and all sorts of things. So I was about to walk away defeated again when an Irish Rail staffer appeared and he immediately offered to open up the station to allow me access to the ticket machine. That's when another problem arose. You see you can only purchase same-day tickets from these machines so

any ticket obtained that evening would be worthless the following morning. That's when the Irish Rail man came to my aid. Don't worry, he said, before taking out the keys and opening up the ticket office where he printed out a ticket for the following day's train. And finally everything was sorted. It was a case of an employee going beyond the call of duty and creating a very good impression. I just thought it was impropriate to recognise his efforts.

Mary and Fionntan were on the march, but Malcolm didn’t spot them The plight of Dunnes Stores workers on zero hours contracts has become a big issue all over the country. However, nowhere is it more important than in Gorey where the staff were treated in an appalling fashion recently when the store was suddenly shut down for the best part of a week. Public representatives in Gorey have been very supportive of the plight of the workers with many of them speaking out publiciy against Dunnes Management. It was not surprising then that the Dunnes workers protest march in Dublin recently would have a good turnout from the North Wexford town. The then Co. Council Chairman, Malcolm Byrne joined the workers on the march and he issued a little press release to highlight the cross party support which the workers received from politicians in the town, particularly mentioning himself, his party colleagues Pip Breen

One Saturday morning recently I noticed a large crowd of workers around the old cinema building just off Redmond Square in Wexford town. On inspection I discovered that they were actually repainting the property. However, they were not an outfit of professional painters, but a group of volunteers from the local Tidy Towns committee. Every weekend they can be found at various locations around the town tackling buildings and areas which have become a bit of a blight on the landscape and they do their best to make these areas presentable again. Their aim is to have the town looking its best before the Tidy Towns judges arrive later in the year and their efforts are to

be commended. In the same vein it was interesting that the outgoing Chairman of Gorey District Council, John Hegarty, singled out the efforts of the hundreds of people who became involved in the rural roads clean up earlier this year as one of the highlights of his year. Both initiatives illustrate the number of people who are prepared to go out and make the county look better. Unfortunately there is a small minority who expect others to come along and clean up the rubbish they have discarded. But the really positive thing is that there are so many people who are prepared to so much work on a voluntary basis for the good of the entire community.

Council unlikely to adopt Robbie’s durex suggestion

Mary was there…………………….and so was Fionntan (pictured with John Douglas of the ICTU and Johnny Mythen Sinn Fein General Election candidate) as these pics prove.

and Joe Sullivan, as well as Fine Gael councillor Another Donohue and the Enniscorthy councillor James Browne.. Malcolm's media release noted that Robbie Ireton and Mary Farrell couldn't attend due to illness. Imagine Mary's surprise when she read the release in the last issue of the Chronicle. Not only was Mary not ill she was on the march and not just

anywhere on the march but right up at the front and she was actually featured on TV news footage of the event. And guess who else was there--------Sinn Fein's Fionntan O'Suilleabhain. And where was he. Well right up at the front too. And to make their point both councillors sent me pictures to prove their participation in the march. Both councillors are now

wondering why the usually very knowledge and with it Malcolm got it so wrong. I assume he was so far back he just couldn't see his colleagues up front leading the protest. Anyway just to put the record straight Mary and Fionntain walked shoulder to shoulder with the Dunnes workers on the day even if their efforts didn't make it to Malcolm's release.

Putting banned drivers off the road Transport Minister Pascal Donohue signed an order last week which enables Gardai to arrest on the spot motorists who are caught driving while disqualified.. There are, it seems, some people who just ignore driving bans handed down by the courts. In the past when they were

Tidy Towns volunteers do a wonderful job

detected driving again there was a slow process which the Gardai had to go through to get them back before the courts. That gave them time to have a sob story ready, maybe even to have a pregnant wife or girlfriend beside them as they sought leniency. Now they will be taken

out of their cars and brought before the first available court, possibly the same day. It is to be hoped that Judges will take a serious view of these offenders. Otherwise the Minister's efforts will be in vain. The other thing is that the vehicles which the banned drivers are in charge of will

also be taken into the custody of the Gardai and this is only right. All such vehicles should be confiscated as another step towards making our roads safer and sob stories told with the aim of having the vehicles returned should be ignored by the courts.

Political correctness means that many public representatives no longer say in public what they really mean and they are often afraid to tackle sensitive issues. But you could never put Robbie Ireton of Gorey in that category. Unfortunately Robbie is sometimes inclined to go a little over the top but he usually does have a serious point to make somewhere beneath the headline grabbing shocker. He addressed the housing shortage at the last meeting of the Gorey Municipal Council and caused a bit of outrage when he suggested that the Council should possibly consider supplying durex to couples in a bid to cut down on the number of children the Council had to house.. Not surprisingly the suggestion is not going to be adopted as Council

policy. However, buried in Robbie's argument was the reality that increasingly the Council is being forced to provide two family homes for single families. This happens when a couple with children break up and one partner has the children for the majority of the week while the other parent (maybe the father) has access just a couple of nights every week. That means that for this arrangement to work both parents have to reside in family homes. In these cases therefore the local authority is providing two family homes for just one family. At a time of scarce resources and when thousands of people have no home at all its a situation which deserves to be addressed although probably not in the way Robbie suggested.

The ever popular Fish Friday will provide a chance to see, taste and buy an amazing array of fish and seafood caught locally and landed here every day by Kilmore

Quay fishermen. There will be cooking demonstrations and food tastings, courtesy of our local chefs. A highlight of the day will be a Cooking Exhibition by Derry Clarke, “Ireland's Best Chef 2015” as voted by his peers in the Good Eating Guide. Fun for all the family includes, Children’s Art & Drama Workshop, Teddy Bear’s Picnic, Beach Games, Kayaking, Archery, 5Km Road Race, Nature walk, Sunset yoga, Climate Change lecture, Harbour stalls and Food Hall, as well as plenty of music and craic with our Ceili Mor, the Submersibles, Point Blank and Corner Boy.

Introduction We ended up getting loads of feedback on last week’s A-Z of Grad Tips, so we’ll make sure to have more similar stuff in the coming

weeks. The summer is well and truly under way and boredom has pretty much set in. Thanks for reading again and hope you enjoy!

Hot – America

Summer Safety Tips for your Pet

Adam Ennis

USELESS FACT OF THE WEEK I usually hate this every week but I heard this the other day and it blew my mind too much not to put it in. Male ants don’t have fathers. Why? Unfertilized ant eggs become males and fertilized ones become females. Who would’ve thought…?!

Brilliant news from America last week as they have legalised samesex marriage in all 50 states. This could mean massive things for the LGBT community all over the world. Similarly to Ireland, this means that same-sex couples will have the exact same marital rights as other couples. Hopefully some other massive countries will follow suit and make the change!

SNAPCHAT OF THE WEEK It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these. It’s mad how much we get hounded to start doing these again, so here we go. This week’s Snapchat definitely goes to me – modest, I know. I was out in Dublin and ran into the internet sensation that is Baldy McDonagh. Just as expected He’s an absolute creature.

#THROWBACK Not sure on the exact date but let us know if you know but this is a picture of Wexford Town from the 1960’s, awesome!

Eoin Healy

Not – Jose Aldo Last time we’ll mention it, I swear! Now fair enough, people get injured in sport all the time. And I do honestly believe it was a genuine case, but surely that mistake should be on him! What I mean is; Mcgregor – love him or hate him – has been training flat out for months for the biggest fight of his life and just because Aldo was careless enough to get injured, it put Mcgregor’s title shot in jeopardy. Eventually Aldo was told he would be stripped of his belt and all of a sudden he was back in fighting form. Bottom line, if you’ve agreed to a fight as big as this, the onus is on you to make sure you’re ready when the time comes around!

TUNE OF THE WEEK Five More Hours – Deorro Ft Chris Brown I came across Deorro a few years ago after I heard his track ‘Yee’ while scrolling through YouTube, instantly fell inlove with his music and every single electro set I’ve played since I heard of him I throw in his track ‘Lose it’. This time last year Deorro was basically unknown. When I went to Creamfields last year and one of the main reasons why is because he was playing and oh boy did he deliver. Since nobody knew who he was he played in a little tent with around 200 people at it and Martin Garrix played at the same time with 40,000 people at him but that wasa good thing as the 200 people at deorro were proper fans and not poser young ones who would have been at Martin Garrix. Chris Brown then went on to release his track five hours and added crappy vocals to it and called it five more hours but it actually worked to be fair and now Deorro is one of the most famous Dj’s in the world in just the space of a year …. Crazy.

Summer is here and it is a great time to spend lots of time outdoors with your pet. However, there are a few hazards to be aware of and precautions you can take to keep your pet healthy. Dogs can’t regulate their temperature as well as humans do so they are vulnerable to overheating. We treat cases of heat stroke every Summer. Often the dog is panting excessively, drooling, and in severe cases lethargic, showing signs of incoordination and vomiting. Heat stroke can be fatal so here are a few tips to avoid it.

poisoning. This poison, which is very palatable, causes muscle tremors leading to convulsions and can be fatal without prompt treatment. Use an organic slug pellet containing iron phosphate which is harmless to animals and birds. If you like to bring your dog on Summer road trips, make sure to get a safety harness for the car, so that in the event of an accident, your dog stays in the car. If your dog suffers from travel

• Allow access to shade from the sun always. • Take your dog for their walk early in the morning or in the evening, avoiding peak sun. • Ensure plenty of drinking water is always available. • Don’t leave dogs in a parked car, even with the window down. • If you think they are overheating, cool them with a fan or cover them with a wet towel and if you are concerned don’t delay in getting veterinary help. Summer is busy season for ticks and fleas. Use a flea and tick preventative treatment from your vet.Ticks are found in long Therese Furlong grass and carry and transmit Lyme disease, a sickness, there is an effective, bacterial illness which can non-drowsy preventative affect humans and pets. LARRY O’GORMAN

The man who gets behind the Sports Headlines

Guiney would have made no difference in Kilkenny Only a defeat of Cork can restore pride in Wexford hurling As |I was leaving Nowlan Park on Sunday week after one of our heaviest defeats on a hurling field in living memory some smart-ass shouted at me asking if I was drunk when I previewed the game in the paper the previous week and suggested that we could skin the Cats.. Well to be honest I was so gutted by the performance on the day I just left it and walked on. But as bad as I felt I would say that the players felt even worse because I know the kind of effort that they had put in to prepare for this game and then to see itt all to go so wrong on the day and remember that

preparation started the day the draw was made. Before I say anything about the actual game itself and to be honest there is not much to be said about it anyhow, let me just address something which every hurling fan in the county has been talking endlessly about since a few days before the game-----the Dropping of Jack Guiney. The question everybody has been asking is whether or not it was right to drop him just a few days before a crunch meeting with our biggest rivals. Really it doesn't make a difference what other people think or what I may think, the

fact is the management made their decision and by all accounts they were correct. You have got to remember that there is no player bigger than the team in any sport. Jack Guiney might think he is but the reality is different. Any sport I ever played I always wanted to be the best at it all the time and I always wanted to win and if you are going to be successful that is the attitude you have to take. Could we have done with Jack Guiney on the day? Well the answer is simple. No one man wins a game so he would have made no real difference. The less said about the

Kilkenny game the better but the fact is that for much of that encounter our lads looked like small boys taking on giants. The whole thing was so disappointing for the supporters who travelled in such numbers to the match. For the most part they were stunned into silence. We just seemed to be tired, have no energy, no game plan and above all we lacked passion and we lacked spirit. I know these boys have it in them because they have shown it in the past but they obviously left it on the bus or somewhere because they hadn't it on the field in Kilkenny.

The performance was so bad that it would be a waste of space here to try to go through it. Instead we must look forward to Cork this weekend. Yes it is going to be a hard game and Cork will be favourites but it is a chance for the boys to redeem themselves They will certainly not want to record another bad defeat or performance and have the summer end before it really started. We need leaders to stand up now with the aid of a proper game plan to put pride back in hurling in this county. Because there is so much at stake for this team and this management I think we will

see a different Wexford team on Saturday evening and at the risk of being accused of being drunk again I think they could give Cork a run for their money. The only way the players can get everyone to forget about the disaster in Kilkenny is to knock Cork out of this year's championship and they know that. I think it is possible for them to do it. However, if they play as badly as they did two weeks ago then I think I will just get drunk after the game.

town on Thursday night as The 4 of Us take to the stage at Katie Daly's. Listed as one of the finest live music venues in the area, the management of Katie Daly's are delighted to transport customers back to the 80s and 90s when The 4 of Us were at their peak with hits like "Mary", "She Hits Me" and "Someone's Got to Lose". Of the original lineup, only brothers Brendan and Declan Murphy remain, however, their live show is just as energetic as ever and they are looking forward to performing an intimate acoustic set to a Wexford audience. The support act on the night will be Dan Bradley, meaning that you're getting one hell of a night of live music for just €15. Tickets can be purchased from the bar or by calling 053 9483920. For further information, visit www.katiescellarbar.com. Declan Sinnott and Vickie Keating The Riverbank House Hotel, Friday, July 3, 8 p.m. As Wexford musicians go, few can claim to have achieved the legendary status and lastibility that Declan Sinnott has enjoyed. Now closing in on fifty years in the music business, Declan has worked with some of the biggest names in Irish music including Mary Black, Christy Moore and Moving Hearts. Perhaps the most shocking thing about Declan's career is the fact that he waited until 2012 to release his first solo album "I Love the Noise it Makes". The

album gained rave reviews and Declan really seems to have settled into his own skin touring Ireland and the UK with playing his own material. Now he's back with a second album "Window on the World" which looks to be every bit as good as his first and he is looking forward to playing some of his new tracks in front of a home crowd at The Riverbank. Accompanying Declan is Vickie Keating, who over the past year has developed a wonderful onstage understanding with the Wexford man, the pair combining on wonderful harmonies that will send a shiver down the spine. A truly outstanding guitar player and, perhaps you could say, Wexford's answer to Rory Gallagher, you'll be kicking yourself if you don't grab the opportunity to see this living legend for another fantastic homecoming gig. Tickets for the show are priced at €20 and are available from Wexford Arts Centre on 053 91237764. The Bannow Rathangan Show Killag, Duncormick, Thursday, July 9, 9 a.m. Every year, thousands upon thousands of people make the journey to Killag for the annual Bannow Rathangan Show, widely regarded to be one of the finest agricultural shows the region has to offer. If the sun is shining, there's no better place to be for a day of family fun. With all the usual attractions including the finest animals you are likely

to see all year, arts and crafts, homecooking, stalls, stands, kids entertainment, live music, cookery demonstrations, fashion shows and much, much more. A great family day out, the show offers something for everyone, young and old, to enjoy. Now in it's 66th year, if you haven't visited before, then you should, just to see how it has managed to last so long, gaining a massive reputation and becoming one of the largest agricultural shows of its kind. For further details on the show, visit www.bannowrathanganshow. com Paddy Casey The Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey, Saturday, July 18 Legendary Irish singer songwriter Paddy Casey will return to Wexford on July 18 for a special show at The Ashdown Park Hotel in Gorey. Paddy's reputation over the years speaks for itself. Having carved out his legendary status with the album "Living", Paddy has followed it up with a series of wonderful albums and has toured extensively all over the country and further afield in the meantime. You can expect to hear hits such as "Saints and Sinners" and "The Lucky One" as well as a host of newer material, all part of Paddy's renowned live show. This is a fantastic chance to see a modern day legend in your own back yard. Tickets are priced at €15 and are available from hotel reception or by calling 0539480500.
