Emotional scenes as Fr Fegan leaves Wexford town Happy Birthday Minister New PP for Ballindaggin There were emotional scenes at mid-day mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Wexford town on Sunday when the Parish Administrator, Fr. Jim Fegan, celebrated his final mass in the town where he has served for twenty seven years. Fr Fegan himself fought back tears as he came to the end of a personal statement in which he thanked all those who had contributed to the parish during his time in Wexford. Later during his statement of thanks to the outgoing Administrator, Fr Aodhan Marken was overcome by emotion and had to take a pause before managing to conclude his remarks. Before Fr Marken left the altar there

was a warm embrace between the two priests and prolonged applause from the congregation. Fr, Marken has been announced as the new Parish Administrator for Wexford town. Fr, Fegan moves to Ballindaggin to fill the vacancy caused by the recent death of Fr. John Sinnott. His departure from Wexford town will leave a major vacuum. He has been a very high profile parish administrator who has been involved in a huge number of organisations. Fr Fegan has been a strong advocate for Wexford General Hospital and has for many years been a leading member of the Friends of the Hospital Group who have

He was also involved in raising tens of thousands of euro each Christmas with his annual Main Street Fast alongside his Church of Ireland colleagues. A high profile and popular figure in the town he played an important role in church affairs during many difficult years and he presided over the high profile celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Twin Churches. It is expected that a new appointment to the Wexford parish will be announced next month to return the number of priests in the town to four.

Bishop Brennan enters referendum debate The Bishop of Ferns, Denis Brennan, entered the me ex marriage debate at the when he had a letter on the issue read at all masses in the diocese. While stopping short of making a direct call for a ‘No’ vote Bishop Brennan said an essential characteristic of marriage is that it is open to the generation of new life. The following is the full text of the Bishop’s letter: On 22 May, we the people of Ireland will be asked to vote in a referendum, which if

passed, will change the meaning of marriage in the Irish Constitution, and as understood by society for centuries. If carried, the referendum will redefine our understanding of marriage, from a unique relationship different from all others, to being another adult relationship regardless of gender. The American Chief Justice John Roberts responding to proponents of same-sex

marriage summed it up like this "you're not seeking to join the institution, you're seeking to change what the institution is. The fundamental core of the institution is the opposite-sex relationship and you want to introduce into it a same-sex relationship." An essential characteristic of marriage is that it is open to the generation of new life and the union of man and woman in marriage is usually blessed with the gift of

children. Children have a natural right to a mother and a father. Sometimes, unfortunately due to circumstances beyond everybody's control this does not obtain, but this is quite different from legislating to make it impossible for some. As the Bishops say in 'The Meaning of Marriage' - "male - female complementarity is intrinsic to marriage... the true nature of marriage, lived in openness of life, bears witness to how

Wexford County Council Chief Executive Tom Enright also welcomed the official opening of Enniscorthy Sports Hub. “I wish to pay tribute to the elected members of Wexford County Council, past and present, who had the vision to fund and develop this ambitious project and the determination to see it through to completion” said Mr. Enright. “Wexford County Council recognises that recreation and amenity facilities play a hugely important part in the lives of the public and it is absolutely essential that the Council continues to invest in this area”. Saturday’s official opening ceremony will be immediately followed by an open afternoon where all athletes, young and old can try out the track and participate in a host of track and field events, coached by skilled instructors. precious Is the gift of a child and to the unique roles of a mother and father." Marriage of course is not merely a private affair. Marriage involves society and indeed in time becomes society. For this reason marriage is given special recognition in our Constitution where it says "the state pledges itself to guard with special care the institution of marriage, on which the family is founded and to protect it against attack." (Art.41.3.1) On 22 May the people will be asked to decide the matter. In the meantime I ask

everyone to ponder the issues involved and I say to all voters: Marriage is important - it has served us well - Reflect before you change.

Divided views on marriage and presidential votes

Luke’s Lines

Derick Webb I will be voting in the upcoming referendum, in the gay marriage one, I will be voting yes, I believe in equality, I think that if two people love each other, I don’t see why they shouldn’t be allowed to marry. Marriage doesn’t dictate how well a child is brought up, the parents themselves dictate how well a child is brought up. If you’ve got two people, regardless of their sex, I think that they should be allowed to marry. As regards the other referendum, lowering the age, I haven’t decided yet. I don’t think someone who’s 21 will have the necessary life skills to represent our country at trade missions and around the world, however in England yesterday a young girl was voted as a MP at the age of 20. I’m in two minds about that, I haven’t decided yet, I will decide that in the morning, but I’m definitely voting yes on the gay referendum. “

Luke Kennedy

As everyone knows, is aware by now there are two referenda coming up, on the May 22nd, where the people of Ireland will be able to vote Yes or No on the legalisation of same sex marriage and the lowering of the age someone can become a presidential

candidate to 21. This week I went out and about in I asked people in Gorey two questions , whether they would be voting and what did they think of the issues involved. These are the answers I received from the people I asked:

Bill Sheeran “I’m all in favour of equality in marriage, I just think it’s almost common sense, and I have absolutely no issue with it whatsoever. As regards lowering the age of the presidential candidacy to 21, I’ve got no problem with that, because any candidate who’s 21 or 22 is going to have to go through the same process as any other candidate, and if the majority of the population in the country think the candidate who is say 23 is going to do a good job representing the nation state, I don’t have a problem with that. I think it will be self regulating, I don’t think there will be any idiots or dopeheads or anything like that, being voted in as president, I’m going to say yes to that referendum as well”.

Eileen Fennell

Gerry Gallagher “Yes I will be voting. I think the president needs a certain amount of gravitas so slightly older people makes sense, to allow people to live and experience life before they take on that role, I think keeping it at 35 is fine. I think the word “marriage” is a very emotive word, and the term has changed in its meaning. For people of a religious context, I can see their view but being gay is just how you’re born, it’s not a disease or anything, so I don’t think they should be discriminated against. “

“I feel very strongly on equality for all citizens of Ireland. On the second issue, there is the issue of the president being 21, I don’t think I agree with it, number one, I don’t see someone of 21 having very much life experience, and number two, I don’t see putting someone in Aras an Uachtarain at 27, who has to be pensioned for the rest of their life, that’s very costly to the taxpayers. I would much rather have someone a little bit older so that we can be getting value, in terms of cost, in terms of taxpayer cost”

Mary Lucy Nash

Patricia Rollins “Yes, I’m voting. I’ll be voting no for both of them, definitely”

“I will be voting No on marriage. For presidential age, it’s up to themselves, that’s the way I look at it. If the young ones want to go ahead, let them go, that’s the way I look at it, let them have a try”

Garda boss tells councillors of shock rise in burglaries There has been a dramatic increase in the number of burglaries across Co Wexford since the start of the year. To the end of last month the number of burglaries in the county was up by one hundred and seventeen which is an average of one extra break in per day. But there has been a coordinated response from Garda bosses and their targeted policy is beginning to show results with a fall off in burglaries since the start of the current month. Assistant Garda Commissioner Jack Nolan revealed the details of crime when he addressed members of Wexford Co Council at their May meeting on Monday.

He admitted there had been a sharp drop in Garda numbers in the county in recent years but said Gardai were doing a very effective job despite the strain on resources and he pointed to a drop in crime across various categories. The Asst. Commissioner came under strong pressure from Joe Sullivan, Pip Breen and John Hegarty over what described as the downgrading of Gorey Garda Station and Garda resources in Gorey. But he insisted there was no downgrading of the Gorey station. The only change had been the loss of a superintendent, he insisted. Mr Nolan told Cllr. Michael Whelan that he would welcome

any scheme that involved the return of retired Gardai as a back up for the full time members He told Cllr. Paddy Kavanagh that the Gardai did work with with the Revenue Commissioners in the battle against criminals. And he was happy to adopt a suggestion from Cllr Ger Carthy to set up a special task force with the specific aim of Protecting Rural Wexford' But he would not accept a claim from Cllr Fergie Kehoe that Garda morale was at rock bottom. He told Cllr Deirdre Wadding

that he could not take a position on whether or not certain drugs should be legalised. In reply to Tony Dempsey and

Barbara Anne Murphy he said there had been a big reduction in the number of Gardai on desk duties.

This powerful cast features the best of Irish and international operatic talent with Northern Irish baritone Bruno Caproni, soprano Emma Nash as Gilda, mezzo Kate Allen as Maddelena, brazilian tenor Luciano Botelho plays the degenerate womaniser The Duke and OTC stalwart John Molloy as Sparafucile assassin for hire. The 1970s were a simpler and in many ways a better time. Although the haircuts and fashion may have changed slightly, we’re now seeing a resurgence of 70s trends. One thing that was big in the 70s that never went away was Smokie, and they are looking forward to taking their always thrilling live show back before a Wexford audience at The National Opera House.

The evergreen band’s hit list reads like a musical backdrop to the 70s with their massive hit ‘Livin’ Next Door To Alice’ only being the tip of the iceberg. There were also hits like ‘Something’s Been Making Me Blue’, ‘I’ll Meet You At Midnight’, ‘Don’t Play Your Rock n’ Roll to Me’, ‘Oh Carol’, ‘Needles and Pins’ ‘Have you ever seen the rain’, ‘Mexican Girl’ and many many more

which have given the band their ticket to travel the world for the past 30 years. The show, which is called ‘The Irish Collection’ will feature every single hit the band had, as well as some of their current albums which have been big chart hits in many European countries. Tickets are priced at €30 and are available from the box office on 053 9122144.

funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital. Among those playing on the day will be David May, Clayton Blackmore, Keith Gillespie, Arthur Albiston, Neil Webb, Frank Stapleton, Lee Martin and Sammy McIlroy. Tickets are priced at €10 for a match ticket, €20 for

Phil Neal is Liverpool’s most decorated player. Having won four European Cups and a total

of eight league titles, to list just some of his impressive honours, Phil was there right through the glory days of Liverpool back when they were the most feared team in Europe and players weren’t afraid to throw in a tackle or two. He will also no doubt have plenty of tales about the legendary Bob Paisley and sharing a pitch with

characters like Rush, Dalglish, Souness and many many more over the years. Tickets for this special night are priced at €15 and are available by contacting John Block on 087 9717310 or Mugger on 087 6980378. Justice at last for Jevens family There was finally some positive news this week for the family of an air corps pilot who lost his life when his training aircraft went down in Galway in 2009. David Jevens from Glynn was just 21 when he lost his life back in 2009 and since then, his parents Donal and Liz have faced a massive uphill battle after they were unhappy with the findings of a military report into their sons death. Now, however, after over two years of fighting, the family won the right to amend the report which they felt was ‘damaging to David’s military character’. The old report had laid the blame for the crash which claimed the life of David and Captain Derek Furniss solely at the hands of the 21 year-old, however, after a long hard battle which also saw the state take responsibility settling a civil case outside court, the report has been amended. The official military record now states that had David’s initial decisions been taken on

board by the instructor and had his course of action been adopted on the night in question, the crash may have been avoided entirely. The family faced a long hard fight to get to this point, during which they were forced to look for help from TDs outside of their home county. Donal and Liz have said that

while the amendment has brought a degree of closure, they must now face the difficult task of mourning for their son after years of fighting to clear his name. They thanked the people of Wexford for all their support during the whole ordeal and those who continue to fundraise to keep the memory of their son alive.

GER WALSH Athenaeum cash is good Fort closure a big blow news for Enniscorthy Last week’s announcement that the government was to provide the cash for the refurbishment of The Athenaeum in Enniscorthy is a great boost for the town. The building is very closely associated with the 1916 Rising and was at one time an important part of life in the town. Unfortunately over the years it has fallen on hard times and is now but a shadow of its former self. However, with €250,000 now allocated by the government to cover the cost of refurbishment the building can look forward to being restored to its

former glory and becoming an important feature in the town again. Next year will be a big year in the country as the nation celebrates the centenary of 1916 and Co. Wexford is fortunate to be part of the national celebrations with the activities in Enniscorthy one hundred years ago set to be commemorated as part of the national programme of events. Sensibly the Co. Council and tourism groups have come together to plan a big programme of events aimed at maximising the benefit of the centenary celebrations to the local .. Co. Wexford and Enniscorthy in particular have long been associated in the public mind with the Rising so the area is well placed to attract a significant number of visitors from all over the country to the planned events.

Talking about tourism it is a great pity that the Fort in Duncannon has had to be closed on health and safety grounds. The Fort is an important attraction in South West Wexford and hopefully it will be back in action again at some point. The local area will feel the

Preparation are already underway and it looks as if there will be a really attractive programme put in place to mark the event. It is good to see the county so rapidly lifting itself up and getting on with it after the bitter disappointment of the exclusion of Wexford from the ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’ initiative. That really was a bit of fiasco with the county hardly meriting a mention at all in the publicity material except more or less to suggest that if you had any spare time after visiting everything other places had to offer you might just drop over to

West Wexford to kill a bit of time. That really was a kick in the teeth for everyone involved in working to develop tourism in the county and it clearly should never have happened. But it has and the only thing to do now is to get on with it and redouble the effort to promote Wexford as a standalone location. If that is successful then many of those who come to Ireland for the ‘Ancient East’ can be lured to the county long before they have visited all the attractions which are promoted as part of that initiative.

Bus Eireann strike The current strikes by drivers at Bus Eireann over plans to privatise a number of bus routes are designed to protect the employment terms of those working in the semi-state. However, I fear they may instead have f the effect of focusing public attention on the merits of private versus semi-state in terms of the provision of public transport. Bus Eireann employees obviously have concerns and feel that the only way they can highlight their case is by going on strike. However, when thousands of passengers are left waiting for buses that do not arrive it can only help cast minds back to the bad old days when the semi-state had a

total monopoly in the provision of bus transport and the service was but a shadow of what people enjoy today. Companies like Wexford Bus have transformed bus

transport helping to provide a frequency and quality of service from Co. Wexford to the centre of Dublin and the airport which people would not have believed possible a couple of decades ago.

Regardless of the fears of the semi-state drivers the public are likely to be strong supporters of more private operators on bus routes.

hospital so soon after the birth. I suppose there is no truth in the suggestion that Willie decided to take her home because she was left waiting on a trolley in the emergency department!

Enforcing Disabled Parking laws For many years there have been complaints about motorists who park illegally in disabled parking bays. The former Co. Councillor Anna Fenlon regularly highlighted the issue during her time on the Council and she was in a good position to make the case given that she was a wheelchair user herself. The big problem, it appeared, was that no one seemed to face any penalty for the offence with very poor enforcement or the laws governing illegal parking in disabled spaces. I was pleasantly surprised, therefore, to see two Gardai

sitting in a patrol car on a street in Wexford town awaiting a very able bodied motorist to return to his car which was parked neatly into a disabled parking bay. The guy may have been a serial offender or maybe just unfortunate to be caught but I was certainly happy to see the law being enforced.

No cameras in the church The speed of the count

SP O EC FF IA ER L

There has been a lot of debate about the announcement that the taking of photographs of children at church ceremonies such as First Communion and Confirmation is to be banned by the authorities. The decision is being taken on child protection grounds, it seems, with fears that some pics may end up on social media and leave young children vulnerable to those who would seek to do them damage. Not surprisingly there has been a bit of an outcry over the planned move, although no formal decision has been taken yet on the matter in the Diocese of Ferns. However, it seems a fair bet that Wexford will go along with the national recommendation and implement the ban. The problem is that if they don’t and anything was to happen as a result in the future there would be grave consequences for all involved. It’s all rather sad really to think that evil people who scan social media and the internet can intrude in such a manner as to have an effect on even a child’s First Communion. But that unfortunately is the reality and it is not just in recent times that were raised about taking pictures of young children and

publishing them either in newspapers or on social media. However, apart ever from the dangers faced by children as a result of these photographs being published I suspect there are many families who will breath sigh of relief if the excesses of the camera men/women are curbed during these ceremonies. It has been mentioned on more than one occasion in recent years that some parents arrive at these ceremonies with as much equipment as a Sky TV crew at the scene of a major disaster. And in their determination to capture every moment of the ceremony they do not care who they obstruct or discommode.

In fact some of the ceremonies can be spoiled by the over indulgence of some parents in photography and recording equipment and very often they are the people who probably had to use a Sat Nav to find the church in the first place. They will also be the people who will scream loudest about how unfair it is that they will no longer be able to show off their test high tech recording equipment at these ceremonies but I think privately many people will be pleased that a curb on the cameras will make the event less stressful and more meaningful for the majority.

UK Election Results Night is a great television spectacle from the pictures of the military style operation at the count centre in Sunderland to the strange characters standing on the platform beside the Prime Minister at his count centre. Obviously some of the characters who stood against David Cameron felt it was worth losing their deposit just for the chance to stand on the stage beside him. I can think of no other reason for them putting their names on the ballot papers. But back to Sunderland. They were disappointed that

it took them that it took them more than forty five minutes to count the votes of the entire constituency because it meant they didn’t break the record for the fastest count, set in the same constituency twenty years ago. It is amazing the lengths they go to in the quest for a f aster count. For example,

voters are instructed not to fold their ballot papers when they put them in the box, because this slows down the process.. I don’t think that would ever catch on over here.

Shock as young couple found dead The community of Clonroche was rocked to it’s core on bank holiday Monday as it emerged that two young residents of the Woodlands Estate in the village had been found dead. The bodies of Stephen De Loughry (28) and Melissa Giltrap (32) were found in their home and Gardai have

stated that they are satisfied that foul play was not a factor in either of their deaths. Gardai were awaiting the results of toxicology tests taking during a post mortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death, but it is understood that the garda investigation was focusing on the possibility that the couple

Orchard Recording in partnership with the Arts Department of Wexford County Council and the Arts Council are pleased to announce the return of the “Recording Development Bursaries” in 2015, for a 3rd year running. This award is part of the Room to Record music technology programme initiated by Wexford County Council in 2012, to enhance the opportunities available to Wexford’s emerging musical talent. Bands/Artists/SingerSongwriters living in Wexford are invited to apply for one of 2 bursaries to be awarded in 2015. Paul Dowling, Orchard Recording “The Recording Development Bursary has been devised to address the need for a greater understanding of professional recording practices/ways of working for

emerging bands/artists/singersongwriters. If you are preparing to record an album, embarking on your first recording experience or looking to increase your skill set within a recording studio environment you should apply”. Among past successful bursary recipients are “Corner Boy” from Killinick in Wexford. Michael D’Arcy- Lead singer with Corner Boy said “We believe that the overall process has helped us garner a greater understanding of the production, recording, editing and writing process.”

may have died as a result of a combination of drugs and alcohol. Family members made the grim discovery at their home on Monday afternoon and alerted gardai who immediately attended the scene, preserving it so an investigation could be carried out.

Mr De Loughry was originally from Blanchardstown in Dublin but moved to Clonroche a number of years ago, while Ms Giltrap was a native of Enniscorthy. The funerals of the pair took place in Enniscorthy and Clonroche on Thursday morning.

Lawlor questions Recording opportunities for locals arts spending

A spokesperson for Wexford County County Council said “This is an exciting opportunity for any musician

or band to move from recording ‘in the bedroom / garage’ to a professional studio with the expert support, guidance and production that Orchard Recordings provide. The Arts Department is proud to support these bursaries for a second year.”

The Recording Development Bursaries will run in the Orchard Recording Studio Enniscorthy. Applications must be submitted by June 5th 2015 For more info/application form contact: Orchard Recording, Carrigabruse, Enniscorthy

Local authority cash is being ploughed into artistic events which provide very little in terms of economic value to the county while other events which play a significant role both in terms of providing opportunities for young people and benefits to the local economy are virtually ignored. That was the charge from Mayor of Wexford George Lawlor when he commented on the County Arts Strategy which was presented to members of the Co Council on Monday. He cited the Wexford Light Opera which got virtually no local authority funding despite costing €100,000 to stage and attracting an audience of more than 4,000 during a week long run.

In spite of this other events which had limited value to the local economy were very well funded. Cllr Davy Hynes made a plea on behalf of local bands who provided a great opportunity for young people to learn music. Director of Services John Carley revealed that discussions are at an advanced stage with a view to opening up the National House venue to more groups. Costs have been prohibitive for many groups and it is hoped that innovative ways can be found to deal with the problem. Commenting on the overall Arts Strategy John Hegarty and Mary Farrell said the report must not be allowed to gather dust.

NWSPCA Report New homes found for twenty one dogs The NWSPCA are really busy lately and depending more than ever on their volunteers. With over 21 dogs rehomed in April alone, this year’s total of rehomed canine pupils has gone up to 136! The

NWSPCA centre has small and big dogs, young and old ones available all looking for a fresh start in life. Beautiful Iona with brown/gold eyes (on the right) is waiting patiently for her new home. She is just 6 months old and very striking. She is a Labrador cross Pointer. Iona is a bit on the shy side, but in time would make a great pet and true friend! Forrest is a young Jack Russell Terrier dog who loves to run and play. He would love a home where his canine pal would be a big dog as he loves playing with them! A

country home setting where he can play and gallivant with you during the day would suit him best. Forest is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and treated against kennel cough too. The NWSPCA currently has 10 half price cat or dog spay/neuter vouchers available on a one per household basis. The North Wexford SPCA is always on the lookout for new volunteers to help in the kennels or

cattery as well as in their charity shop on Rafter Street (previous shop or retail experience would be great, but is not a must). Please make contact on 087-6392531, send an email to nwspca@hotmail.com or join the NWSPCA Facebook page.

Political Diary

Lessons of UK election will not be lost on local politicians Politicians here will have been watching events across the water very carefully as Britain elected a new government. The Irish election is now no more than ten months away and it could even be held as soon November of this year which is just about twenty eight weeks away. The government’s strategy is becoming fairly clear at this stage. The economy is improving; more jobs are being created; we are going to put more money in your pockets and things are set to get even better in the years ahead, so don’t throw it all away by electing a government headed by Sinn Fein and supported by hard left independents. A similar strategy worked well or the Tories in Britain but it was not so successful for the junior party in government over there. However, it is the message that will be repeated time and again in the months ahead while at the same time money is found to deal with a range of issues which have been close to the top of the political agenda for a number of years. How well the plan works we will only know when the votes are counted after polling day but the indications at the moment are that there is

However, the Cllr Malcolm Byrne colour of the government he will lead is still very to the contrary there unclear. While the return continues to be doubts of the current arrangement about Brendan Howlin’s with the support of some intentions and they will independents is a remaint until after the possibility, it is probably budget regardless of how no more than a remote many statements he possibility and that would makes about his place Fianna Fail in the commitment to stand position of having to again. Then, of course, there is In Wexford the position in Fianna there is Fail. Of all the parties the considerable greatest amount of activity behind background work is going the scenes as on in Fainna Fail with various John Browne’s likely potential retirement meaning that candidates get acompletely new ticket ready for their will be going before the election bids, electorate. but Sinn Fein The battle for places on and Renua the party ticket will be remain the only intense and the various parties to have contenders are all declared working hard to put candidates. themselves in the driving The Fine seat. Michael Sheehan is opening offices and holding clinics at every crossroads while Michael Whelan, the Ballycullane councillor, is also very active. Neither will have been pleased that James Browne managed to get inside the New Ross District to deliver a speech at the Taghmon Parle Creane and Hogan ceremony, Some in the party feel that a strong young ticket of Malcolm Byrne Michael Sheehan and James Browne would actually have a chance of causing a shock and winning two seats but that notion is probably wildly optimistic. There are others in the party who say that they have to have a female on the ticket and someone from the Wexford District, even if that means running four candidates. That is also a mad notion but it all means that there is likely to be an intense battle for the nominations and that could, in a

Cllr Ger Carthy

strange way, provide a bit of extra energy for the party election campaign. And then, of course, there are the independents. The Shane Ross/ Michael Fitzmaurice Town and Country Independent outfit have been trying hard to persuade one of

Brendan Howlin

the sitting independent members of Wexford Co. Council to join with them. However, most observers believe that Ross would be more a hindrance than a help when it comes to winning votes across most parst of Co. Wexford. Mick Wallace is considered a shoe in by some but his hard left stance on social issues coupled with his recent law breaking activities and his complicated tax affairs will probably turn off many who supported him five years go. However, he could afford to lose at least five thousand votes and still make his way back for another Dail term. Various independents including Martin Murphy in New Ross, John O’Rourke in Enniscorthy, Mary Farrell in Gorey and Ger Carthy in Wexford are all said to

be considering throwing their hats in the ring. However, a Dail bid requires a lot of cash and a big organisation If it is to have any hope of success and when the stark reality of cost is considered it is likely that many of these potential candidates will take the view that their money is better in the Credit Union that being splashed out on posters and literature for an election in which their chances would be uncertain. Based on local election results Ger Carthy would be best placed to make a bid given his strong showing last year when he topped the poll in the Wexford District which includes the most populated areas of the county. The picture will start to become clearer soon when the parties move to select their candidates. Some are likely to be in place before the summer but everything should be much clearer by the autumn.

Gay Referendum Ridiculousness

Introduction So we’re back with another edition! It probably couldn’t have fallen on a worse week – with work and exams and all the rest, but we’ll get by! Summer’s only around the

corner and we’ll be visiting all the big events over the next few weeks and writing a bit on them, so if there’s anything on in your area, please let us know! Between the two

of us, we’re planning on going to all the big Irish festivals in the summer, so let us know which ones you’re going to! Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy.:)

TUNE OF THE WEEK Alvita – Warrior I happened to just wonder upon this gem on beatport while having a browse and it’s something else! Real dirty filthy electro just the way I like it :D So if you’re at a house party this weekend be sure to blast this one out!

What’s on and Where? Liverpool Legends Night On Wednesday May 27th Jack Bailey’s pub turns red to welcome one of Liverpool’s most successful players in the clubs history, the one and only Phil Neal. To put into perspective how successful Neal was as a player he has more European Cups than Manchester Utd do in their entire history. Now that’s impressive considering all you hear is that Man Utd are the best club in the world but that argument is for another day ha. Doors open 7:15 and the event starts at 8 sharp with your chance to meet and ask questions to Neal about his glamorous career which saw him win 8

Eoin Healy

League titles along with his 4 European Cups. He also and knocked up 50 caps for England as well so this is a night not to be missed for us reds !!!. Tickets are €15 and available from Mugger on 0876980378. Irish Team Kettle Bell Fundraiser A fundraiser teenage disco in aid of the Irish Kettlebell team who are competing in the European Championships in Lithuania will take place in Total fitness club unit 26 Westpoint Wexford on Friday May 15th from 8:30 – 11 and I’s €5. Superstar DJ on the night too ;) I’ll be spinning the tunes so it promises to be an epic night: D

Where do I even start with all this? It’s as if this referendum is after consuming every last bit of conversation we had left. In fairness, at the start it was a nice change from the water charges but it has reached a whole new level! Unfortunately it’s only going to get worse until the thing is decided 22nd. Firstly, I just want to say that it’s ridiculous that we’re even asked to vote on this. Out of every single country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, Ireland is the only one to hold a referendum. I know about the constitution and all that but it makes absolutely no difference to anybody else except those who are in a same sex relationship so it makes no

sense having people vote on something that will never affect them. As annoying as the whole thing is, I have been getting a laugh out of some of the reasons put forward by the No side. I can honestly say that I haven’t heard a single statement that in my view holds any weight in this argument. It was expected that they’d be clutching at straws, but some of the posters and campaigns I’m seeing are ridiculous. I think it’s starting to wreck most people’s heads at this stage. People need

to open their minds a bit and move with the times. Homosexuality was only decriminalised like 20 years ago and looking back that seems fairly ridiculous doesn’t it? Hopefully in 20 years we’ll have the same opinion on this whole referendum. If you’re voting No on May 22nd, it’s probably about time you re-evaluate your life. Adam out

BLAST FROM THE PAST I came across this image of the Enniscorthy Motor Company online while messing around, no idea when the photo was taking but I’m guessin around the 1920’s based on the cars. If anyone has any idea of the year, tweet me @djeoinhealy!

USELESS FACT OF THE WEEK Every week Adam tells me to stop doing this but it’s my favourite thing in the whole universe. This week I have found out that

Donald Duck Comics were banned from Finland as he didn’t wear any pants, young ones from Ireland would have no chance over there so!

They probably have the forwards to do it but their backline needs strengthening and the return of one of their great servants, Philip Wallace, from his club in Dublin will undoubtedly help in that regard. Castletown and Fethard could be dark horses for honours with the former a very consistent team in championship terms and should get a great boost when Conor Carty returns from injury. But, as stated, the Rathangan men will face a serious challenge from Shelmaliers, Gusserane and St Martin’s. Shels have great strength in depth but the injured Clive Lawlor will be a big loss to them; they came very close last year and it would not surprise me if they went all the way this year. They have a very athletic team with most of their team having played at various levels for Wexford. Of course they will be making a huge effort to retain their hurling title and that could impact on their football preparations. The same could be said for St Martin’s who certainly have the quality to retain a title they last won two years ago. It could all depend on how they go in the hurling as with a fine young team emerging, they probably have title aspirations there too. Gusserane came very close in the final last year and they will feel that they can go one better this year. They will be particularly

HSE launches Five Year Plan on Traveller Health A Five Year Strategic Plan by the HSE’s South East Regional Traveller Health Unit was launched this week at a function in The Parade Tower in Kilkenny Castle. The Strategic Plan for Traveller Health in the South East Community Health Organisation Area, has been described as a plan which was developed by Travellers for Travellers – as individual members of that community and their representative organisations lead the process for developing this plan to improve the health of their community. The HSE’s South East Traveller Health Unit has been developing and delivering services in partnership with community and men’s health projects, their host agencies in the voluntary sector and the South East Regional Traveller Health Network since the first Traveller Health project was established in 1999. The Plan reviews ongoing

work in improving access to health services by the Traveller community in counties Carlow, Kilkenny, South Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford. It also charts progress on increased awareness on health matters and services in that community, in addition to improved health for Travellers in the South East, lifestyle change, prevention and early detection. In terms of aims over the next five years, the Strategic Plan identifies a focus on health promotion to raise awareness, advice and information on targeted health matters, referral to appropriate services and support to Travellers to take up health services. The HSE has focused this Plan on supporting and building on the work that has already taken place in respect of enhancing access for Travellers to health services and improving the overall health status of Travellers within the region.

The Five Year Strategic Plan was launched by the HSE’s National Director for Primary Care, Mr. John Hennessy. Speaking at the launch, he said: “Social Inclusion plays a key role in the delivery of primary care service in ensuring access to services for all. The South East Traveller Health Unit is one of eight nationally and their establishment recognised the need for collaboration and partnership between health service providers and Traveller representatives. We have been monitoring the delivery of health services to Travellers and setting regional targets against which performance can be measured. A key feature of the Traveller Health Units is that improvements in Traveller Health will be only be truly effective if Travellers are supported to take on leadership roles within their own community. Today is testament that Travellers within the South East have become these leaders.”
