Bishop explains Fr. Fegan’s Ballindaggin move The Bishop of Ferns has spoken publicly about the circumstances surrounding the transfer of one of the county’s highest profile priests from Wexford town to a remote rural posting. Bishop Denis Brennan made the remarks at a Civic Reception in honour of Fr. Jim Fegan, hosted by the Mayor of Wexford Borough District, George Lawlor, in the Irish National Heritage Park, on Friday evening, The Bishop provided the explanation of the priest’s move to Ballindaggin following a radio query and considerable local disappointment over the departure of the long serving and highly popular parish administrator from the town. He told a packed Civic Reception, which was attended members of Fr. Fegan’s family

as well as representatives of every sector of life in Wexford town, that there was no mystery attached to the appointment. Acknowledging that questions had been raised about why Fr. Fegan had been moved from his position in Wexford town and appointed to a parish at the foothills of the Blackstairs Mountains he provided a detailed explanation of how the appointments system in the diocese works. He said from the day of a priest’s ordination they have a fixed place on the list of priests in the Diocese which is compiled on seniority and at all times each priest is aware of their exact position on the list. When they reach the top of the list they become known as the ‘head waiter’. This priest is offered the next parish where a

vacancy arises. Fr. Fegan had been in this position for almost a year prior to the vacancy arising in Ballindaggin. When the post of parish Priest of Ballindaggin arose the Bishop explained that he offered it to Fr. Fegan and he accepted. It was as simple and straightforward as that. There were no under table deals or anything else, he said. When Mayor George Lawlor intervened to say ‘so Sepp Blatter was not involved’ there was uproarious laughter from the attendance, Earlier the Mayor had warmly praised Fr. Fegan for his commitment to Wexford in the almost three decades he spent in the town. He singled out his work in helping and supporting people at times of tragedy in addition to the tens of thousands of euro which he raised with his annual Main

Street Christmas fast. The Mayor also mentioned the scale of the change involved for Fr. Fegan in his move from Wexford town to Ballindaggin where the population is Iess than nine hundred and in a humours part of his speech he said the former parish administrator would be as likely to be called out at Members of Fr. Fegan's family, including his mother and 90 year old aunt night to assist a attended the Civic Reception on Friday night. Wexford to host Cycle Against Suicide Hundreds of orange-clad cyclists from all over Ireland will converge on Wexford in September for a 60 km cycle to raise awareness about suicide. September 26 is the date for the Cycle Against Suicide SpinOff - brain child of ‘Secret Millionaire’ Jim Breen - who has relentlessly campaigned to get the conversation about suicide started in this country since the first round Ireland Cycle Against Suicide pelethon in 2013. The message of Cycle Against Suicide is to spread the messages that ‘it’s ok not to feel ok and it’s absolutely ok to ask for hep’. The voluntary organisation also directs people in need to places where they can access critical help on both a national and local level. Latest figures show that 800 lives in Ireland are lost annually to suicide. While the ‘SpinOff’ cycle in September will be championed

by many veteran Cycle Against Suicide participants, local people are being asked to get on their bikes and join up for the day. A stage of the main Cycle Against Suicide pelethon visited Wexford in Apirl 2013, and 230 cyclists were hosted in the Presentation School when they passed through the town during the two week tour. Following feedback after the first year of the cycle the organisation recognised that there was too long a gap between each annual cycle as promoting good mental health is a fifty two week a year campaign and not just for two weeks. To fill this void they developed the Cycle Against Suicide SpinOff. This is a cycle followed by a mental well-being event held once a month in a different location around the country. It is organised by the local community, for the community, for the benefit of everyone and everyone is

welcome. SpinOff’s have all the colour, energy and fun of the annual cycle but all packed into a single day. The SpinOff provides a platform for dialogue to take place around mental health and suicide and it also provides a meaningful and tangible way for the community to get active and join in the fight against suicide. Wexford has been asked to organise a SpinOff on Saturday 26th September. The cycle will start on Wexford Quay and pass through Barntown, Taghmon, Waddingtown, Baldwinstown, Kilmore Quay, Kilmore, Bridgetown, Piercetown, Drinagh and finish back on Wexford Quay. The cycle will cover approx 60 km with a break in Kilmore Quay. On arrival back in Wexford there will be refreshments followed a mental wellbeing event. The cycle is suitable for beginners, sportive cyclists

and racers but it will be at a controlled pace of an average of 20 km per hour. The group will start together and finish together and nobody will be left on their own. As is customary with Cycle Against Suicide the experienced cyclists will always watch out for and help anyone in need. Participants must have a road worthy bike and wearing of helmets is compulsory. Priests and people in final tribute to Fr. Walter Walter Forde was a man big on organisation. As a leading light in the diocese for so many years he played a major part in organising Church events so when it came to saying a final farewell to the man himself in Castlebridge last Thursday it was important that everything was carried out just as he would have wished When news of Fr. Forde's passing reached Castlebridge the previous weekend parish workers were single minded in what they had to do. 'We'll only get one chance to do this right' was the message which came from a hastily convened meeting. And all those involved can be proud of the nature of the farewell which Fr. Walter received in the parish where he had spent almost two decades. This was not a funeral dominated by the rich signing of an assembled diocesan choir

but a ceremony in which the children's choir from the local national school played a central role and that was right and proper because the school and its pupils over the years were central to Walter's life. The previous day when his Remains arrived back in Castlebridge from Gorey it was the Castlebridge Gospel Choir who were central to the ceremony. Bishop Denis Brennan presided at Thursday's Requiem Mass during which he recounted many stories about the popular priest who was found dead in his Gorey home the previous Saturday having not been seen for some days. The people of Gorey, where Walter was a curate for nearly a quarter of a century turned out in their hundreds to pay their final respects when he reposed in St. Michael's

Church for several hours on Tuesday and the people of Castlebridge had turned out in forced on Wednesday when he arrived back in the parish. By Thursday it was time to say a final farewell to Fr. Walter. Almost sixty priests led the procession from the Church to his final resting place just a few yards from the main door.. His grave had been prepared amidst the trees in a spot where the sun shines brightly in mid-afternoon. It was a place where Water had spent many a happy afternoon, seated on a chair, book in one hand and cigarette in the other and it was a very appropriate place for him to be buried. Even as his coffin was lowered to the earth many in attendance could still not come to terms with the fact that he had died. There was much sadness in the fact that one

State-of-the-art facilities for Business Community Wexford Chamber is embarking on a landmark project with Wexford County Council and Wexford-based ICT solutions and services provider Datapac. The project will see the Chamber’s offices completely revitalised and redeveloped to incorporate the latest technology and communications infrastructure. Over the past number of years, Wexford Chamber has grown exponentially to become one of the most active and successful Chamber of Commerce in Ireland. Staff numbers, levels of business-tobusiness meetings, the number of events held, and the range of services offered to its members have all increased in line with this growth. The rejuvenated offices will serve as a meeting area where Chamber staff and members can work collaboratively to

develop and grow the local Wexford economy. A major part of this renovation will be the installation of a new Boardroom and Training Facility, which will be named the Datapac Business Resource Centre. Speaking about the project, Martin Doyle, President of Wexford Chamber said: “We wanted an environment that was welcoming and open to our members and comfortable and collaborative for our meetings. We wanted the best for the future home of the Chamber. Our current location in Dr Furlong's on Hill Street, home for the past two years, is somewhere that we did not want to give up. “It has all the attributes a Chamber building needs – accessibility, strategic alignment and visibility. However, it is a very old

building in need of some serious repair. The new space will be welcoming, bright, open, collaborative, spacious and innovative. Tom Enright, Chief Executive of Wexford County Council, added: "Wexford County Council is delighted to support the development of quality office space for the Wexford Chamber, which reflects the standard of services the Chamber provides to the business community in Wexford." "It is evident that Wexford Chamber is held in high esteem and the support they have received so far highlights this. It is very well deserved and I have no doubt that the entire business community in Wexford will reap the benefits of this prestigious building for years to come."

Cultural Capital Bid gains momentum Wexford's campaign to be part of the winning bid for EU Capital of Culture 2020 is gaining momentum. Co. Wexford is part of a South East bid for the prestigious title with Waterford and Kilkenny. Various interactions with interest groups and public consultations have taken place in recent months and plans are now well advanced under the title the Three Sisters Bid. The South East bid will face competition from Dublin, Limerick and Galway but if successful would have a major positive impact on the region and on Co. Wexford, councillors were told at their June meeting. Among the benefits would be a boost to tourism, a raising of the profile of the area across Europe and a general sense of pride among the local population, Catherine Collins told the meeting. The bid has to be submitted by October 17th with a short list being announced in

December. The final decision will be announced next Summer. Cllr. George Lawlor said as part of the bid a push should be made to have Wexford town host the All Ireland Fleadh in 2020. Cllr Oisin O'Connell said it

was important for people to be aware that the project was not just about big ticket items but it would be fully inclusive. Cllr Fionntan O'Suilleabhain said it was a fantastic opportunity and he believed the bid had a good chance of success.

Catherine Collins said it was great to have the support of members which would be very important for the potential success of the bid. The programme would be aimed at maximum participation and would involve the rural areas as well as the towns.

Councillors see red over Irish Water The formality of presenting the Co. Council's annual service plans to members almost came unstuck when a number of councillors objected to the inclusion of an objective aimed at optimising the transfer of responsibilities for the county's water supply to Irish Water. Cllr. Deirdre Wadding said she had no confidence in Irish Water and could not support any such statement.

And she was supported by Cllr. Davy Hynes. However, Chairman Malcolm Byrne .reminded the councillors that the service plan was not a policy statement and Cllr. Keith Doyle objected to suggestions that the Council should have nothing to do with Irish Water. The only way to get a main drainage scheme for Enniscorthy was to engage with Irish Water and that's what he intended to do, he told colleagues.

There was a huge turnout for the Gorey Credit Union sponsored Fun Run in the town on Sunday. Apart from those taking part hundreds more lined the streets to cheer on the runners.

Water bills motion rejected Members of Wexford Co. Council have rejected a bid by People Before Profit Councillor Deirdre Wadding to have the Council condemn "the government's attempt to panic and intimidate people

out of a legitimate choice to use boycott as protest by threatening to create a fast track court system and falsely giving the impression that water charges will be deducted at source"

Cllr. Wadding said the impression being created by the government was not the truth but was being used to panic people. Cllr Paddy Kavanagh said the position being put

forward by Cllr. Wadding was all in her imagination and was not reality. Cllr. Wadding's motion was voted down by councillors.

Cash for 1916 celebrations A â‚Ź30,000 allocation to go towards events to commemorate the 1916 Rising in the county has been spread across the four districts with â‚Ź10,000 going directly to the central organising committee, councillors were told at the June meeting of the Co. Council. Local communities are being urged to come forward with their plans if they want to be considered for funding

.Events have to be approved by the county committee to be eligible for funding but cash may not be available to support all events. The aim of the committee is to have a fully inclusive programme. . However, groups and organisations will be free to organise any events they want during the year but only those approved by the central will committee form part of the official programme.

Row over hospital entrance rages on Councillor Mary Farrell is to represent Wexford Co. Council in a face to face meeting with management at Wexford General Hospital in an effort to find a solution to the problems caused by the closing of the old hospital entrance. Elderly visitors to the hospital are facing stress as a result of the long walk from the new entrance to some of the wards and the hospital authorities had been asked to reopen the old entrance by way of motion from the Council two months ago However, the general manager of the hospital, Lily Byrnes, while accepting that distances within the hospital had increased since the opening of the new entrance held out no hope of reopening the old entrance. ""Unfortunately because of inability to provide security we are unable to use the old main

Any move by Ireland to turn its back on wind energy would be incomprehensible two senior members of Wexford Co. Council have declared. Tony Dempsey and Paddy Kavanagh were commenting during a debate on a motion from Independent councillor John O'Rourke which called on the government to stop blotting the landscape with wind turbines. Both councillors pointed out that the Council had a

clear and restricted policy on where turbines could be located and they stressed the need for the country to utilise all forms of alternative energy. But Cllr Robbie Ireton said the Wexford side of the Blackstairs had been 'totally contaminated' with turbines and Cllr. John Fleming said county Wexford had more turbines than any other county in Ireland. Cllr. O'Rourke's motion was defeated.

entrance', she informed councillors. Ms Byrnes suggested that if members of the public require assistance on their journey throughout the hospital wheelchairs are available and the Orderly/Security Department will be more than

happy to assist them. But the reply did not please councillor Farrell who has been campaigning on the issue for some time. She said it was simply unacceptable to say there was a lack of funds. The matter should have been considered

when the hospital extension was being planned and she suggested that security staff be divided between the two entrances .On the suggestion of Chairman Malcolm Byrne Cllr Farrell will now put her arguments directly to the hospital authorities.

Wadding motion voted down A motion from Cllr Deirdre Wadding which called on the government to rescind any call to landlords to increase the deposits on rental accommodation to cover water charges resulted in angry exchanges between councillors over which members had a vested interest in the matter as landlords themselves. Cllr Robbie Ireton said

Dempsey and Kavanagh back wind energy

those who were landlords or agents for landlords should remove themselves from the chamber for the debate. He was backed by George Lawlor who said that at a previous meeting councillors had not declared their interest when similar issues were discussed. A number of Fianna Fail councillors called on Cllr. Lawlor to name the landlords

but he hit back saying it was not his job to name them. Later councillor Keith Doyle, who had not been the subject of the previous comments, declared he was a landlord and would not be voting on the matter Cllr Tony Dempsey said that as elected councillors they were all landlords because the Council had thousands of

tenants.. When calm returned Cllr. Wadding's motion was voted down with government party members voting strongly against it. When several Fianna fail councillors abstained Cllr Lawlor pointed in their direction and declared 'the landed gentry'

There was shock in Taghmon on Friday when it was confirmed that the Irish Pride owned bakery had gone into receivership. Although the operation is to continue trading in receivership and wages have been guaranteed there are concerns about the long term viability of the operation which with one hundred and twenty five direct employees is one of the biggest employers in rural Co. Wexford. There has been a bakery in

Taghmon village for generations. It was formerly run by the Williams family. Apart from the direct employment which is provided many other workers are also dependent on the bakery through service provision. It is expected to take several week before it becomes clear whether or not a buyer can be found meaning that employees and their families face an anxious time.

Council house repair cash running out Wexford Co. Council's housing repair budget is coming under severe pressure since the amalgamation of the county's four urban authorities last year with cash for repair works rapidly running out. Now council members are demanding that those who wilfully damage Council houses be made pay a price. Cllr John Fleming proposed that such tenants should become liable for reinstatement costs and only be re-housed once it is paid.. He was supported by councillor Paddy Kavanagh but Cllr Deirdre Wadding expressed reservations. Director of Services John

Carley said it was already part of the tenancy agreements that tenants would have to foot the bill for damage they caused. But he said the Council did not adopt a blanket position in relation to the matter and looked at each case on its merits. Chairman Malcolm Byrne asked how often action was taken against tenants. Cllr. Michael Sheehan said action had to be taken to halt the waste of scarce resources. Davy Hynes said it was a very difficult issue. In the private sector the deposit would be used to repair the damage but the Council did not have that facility.

'Wexford Day' appears to have disappeared just a few years after much effort was put into launching it. Concern over the disappearance of the day was expressed by councillor John Hegarty at the June meeting of the Co. Council when he asked what plans had been put in place to celebrate the

day in 2015. However, given that the date of the day had already passed for this year he feared there were no plans for it and he said that was regrettable given the amount of time and effort which had been put into getting it up and running.

60% of Wexford GPs sign up for free under 6s care Recent weeks have seen a big increase in the number of Co. Wexford GPs signing up for the scheme to provide free care for the under 6s and over 70s, The development has been warmly welcomed by Fine Gael Oireachtas members Minister Paul Kehoe and Senator Michael D’Arcy. Both men said the new free GP Service for under 6s and over 70s should get off to a positive start with 41 GPs in Wexford signed up to take part. “In the last two weeks,

there has been a 63% increase in the number of GPs signing up to take part in the new Free GP Service and there is still time for other doctors to take part. In Wexford 60% of GPs have already committed to take part meaning that children under six and those over 70 will be able to avail of free GP care from 1st July. “From Monday 15th June, parents will be able to register their children and senior citizens over 70 who currently have to pay for GP care, can also sign up

meaning that this summer up to 300,000 children and senior citizens will no longer have to pay. “Free GP care was a key Fine Gael election commitment and it will result in real savings for pensioners and for families. It is important that we change the health system from one that only treats sick people to one that keeps people well; providing free access to GP care will make a significant difference in achieving this goal’ Minister Kehoe and

I am a 38 year old man who lives in Wexford. I have a good job, my own house and have lots going for me. The thing is, I have been single for a good few years now and even though I go out every weekend, I never seem to meet anyone. What can I do? Yours sincerely Confused Answer: Dear Confused There are lots of things you can do in order to improve

your chances of meeting that someone special. To be honest, the likelihood of meeting someone on a night out is fairly small, especially if people are drinking. You need to get yourself to places other thans pubs and clubs where there is the chance to meet women – gyms, dance classes, evening classes etc, group activities specifically run for singles. Take a look at your image, does it need updating e.g. a new haircut, new clothes etc., if you are not sure ask someone close to you and if possible bring them along on a shopping trip. Also, take a look at how you approach women. I recommend that you take

time to talk to them, find out what they like to do, what interests them – women really appreciate men who show an interest in them. Be realistic and honest with yourself about what you really want, does it really matter if she has brown eyes rather than blue. Most importantly of all, be yourself and remember to smile. Senator D’Arcy said in statements. “Early identification of health issues at a younger age can reduce the impact of ill-health later in life and as one in four children in Ireland are overweight or obese, this is especially relevant when it comes to detecting illnesses that may be coming down the road. “With 60% of doctors in Wexford signing up to provide the service, this is a very good start. I know many families of young children and older people are very pleased that this service will be available, and I would encourage parents with children under 6 to sign up from Monday.” Said Minister Kehoe

HSE Warning to Public on Leptospirosis Danger The Health Service Executive (HSE) and the South East Regional Zoonoses Committee are alerting those who may be at risk, to the dangers of Leptospirosis. This includes farmers, people working outside who may have contact with rat urine, anyone who swims in or uses lakes, rivers or canals for recreational purposes and people who handle dogs. Dr. Sarah Doyle, Specialist in Public Health Medicine, HSE, and member of the South East Regional Zoonoses Committee explains: “Leptospirosis is an infection found in domestic and wild animals. It is a zoonotic disease, which means that it can pass from animals to humans. It rarely, if ever, passes from person to person." “The majority of people develop a flu-like illness with fever, chills, a persistent and severe headache, conjunctivitis and muscle pains, especially in the legs. The symptoms typically develop 7 to 14 days after infection. Leptospirosis can be treated with antibiotics, but since most people have a mild illness and recover within a few weeks without treatment, it often goes undiagnosed. A small number of people can get a more serious illness (Weil’s Disease) with jaundice and kidney failure. Weil’s disease can be fatal in a

small proportion of cases. It is treated with antibiotics”. The infection is spread through contact with rats, or rat, cattle or dog urine. This is usually through contact with water, feed, hay, straw or other substances that have been contaminated with urine. Infected urine or contaminated water can be found in sewers, ditches, ponds, canals and slowflowing rivers and riverbanks. Rat urine may also contaminate animal feedstuffs on farms”. Dr. Doyle continued “if you are in contact with infected urine, the germs which cause Leptospirosis can get into your body through cuts and scratches or through the lining of the mouth, throat and eyes”. Farmers, workers in contact with canal or river water, vets, meat inspectors, butchers, abattoir and sewer workers, those who fish, swim or use the water for other recreational purposes and people who engage in outdoor pursuits in contaminated areas may be at risk of getting Leptospirosis. Dog owners and those who work with dogs may be at risk if hygiene is inadequate. Leptospirosis can also be acquired abroad, particularly in travellers on adventure holidays with water contact such as rafting or fishing. PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN

• Wash hands thoroughly always before eating, and particularly after handling animal feed, animals and pets. • Cover cuts and scratches with waterproof dressings before possible exposure. Thoroughly clean any cuts or scratches received during activities. • Wear protective clothing if you think you might be exposed to contaminated water or soil because of your job or recreational activities. • Don’t swim or wade in water that might be contaminated with animal urine. • When kayaking, avoid capsize drill or rolling in stagnant or slow moving water. • Shower promptly after water sports, especially if you fall in. • Take whatever measures are feasible to reduce rodent populations, such as clearing rubbish and preventing rodent access into buildings. • Vaccinate cattle herds infected with Leptospirosis. In conclusion, Dr. Doyle recommended “if you get a flu-like illness within a three week period after engaging in any of these activities you should visit your family doctor immediately, and tell her or him of your fears and possible exposure to the disease”.

Strawberry Culture & Food Fest 2015 All Ireland Farmer's Market Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28. Abbey Square Enniscorthy has a proud tradition of being a market town. It has had a weekly trading day and a summer market fayre since March of 1613! It's no surprise then that the town will know a thing or two about hosting a farmer's market. Nearly 400 years after the town first hosted a summer fayre, you'll be able to experience the same kind of thing...buying top quality local produce that's fresh and coming from a friendly face. The market is always a highlight of the festival and sees visitors and producers come from all over. There's always a great buzz in market square while its on and you might just bag a bargain or two as well.

Really these events are just the tip of the iceberg (or strawberry as it may be!) and there are tonnes of events taking place over the duration of the festival that

are sure to grab the interest of young and old. For further details on the festival and a full list of events, visit www.strawberryfest.ie.e

GER WALSH Paupers Patron

Cheerio Walter Much has been said and written about the late Walter Forde since his untimely passing. In a sense everything that could be said of the man has been said but I could not let the occasion pass without paying a little tribute of my own. I did not know Walter from his time at St. Peters----------he had made his getaway from the teaching staff just before I arrived as a student. Maybe my view of him would have been much different if our paths had crossed in St. Peter’s because he would often later describe himself as the world’s worst teacher. Somehow I think Water was a little too negative about his time as a teacher because I simply cannot envisage him making a bad fist of anything he tackled. And he tackled so many things with great success throughout his life. He made great speeches and wrote fine articles about issues and problems in

various communities but where he was different to most was in the fact that he didn’t stop at making the speech or writing the article--------he went out and personally did something about the issues which he found. Many of the organisations which he helped to found are still doing valuable work today and that really is the great lasting monument to Walter’s work. Apart from being a great priest on the ground, first in Gorey and later in Castlebridge Walter played a big role at diocesan level and was for many years Diocesan Press Officer. It was through that role that I first got to know Walter. He was a very efficient, helpful and friendly PRO and he did a really good job promoting various diocesan events. He achieved national prominence in that role in the 1990s when he had to deal with sudden departure

For many years the unfortunate souls buried in the so called Paupers Graveyard at Coolcotts in Wexford town were forgotten. But thanks to the efforts of a group of concerned citizens the graveyard was completely overhauled several years ago and all those buried there are

of then Bishop Brendan Comiskey to the US. Both Walter and I were deeply involved in the emerging story. He worked gallantly to explain the position as honestly as he could. It was a very difficult time to be a church spokesman in this diocese but it was to Walter’s great credit that despite the pressure and turmoil of the period he never lost friends over the controversies and when the fog cleared and the harsh reality of what had been going on emerged no one was more shocked or saddened than him. In more recent years our paths had not crossed as often but in times of sadness and loss he would always turn up to offer support and words of

comfort and when The Chronicle started he was really supportive and encouraging and for that I will always be grateful. During one of the last conversations I had with him we spoke of getting older and he said you really knew time was moving on when you did a First Communion and the parents looked like the children and the grandparents looked like the parents. He was active to the end and while he had much more to give at the time of his untimely death I could never really have imagined Walter in retirement. It was a privilege to have known him. And to use the parting greeting he used so often himself ‘Cheerio Walter’

Gipsy Wedding cameras in Barntown Channel 4 television in the UK has made a bit of a mission of focusing on the excesses of Irish traveller weddings in Britain. Their ‘Big Fat Gypsy Wedding’ series has been running for several years now. For most viewers it is real car crash television but it does secure good ratings. Generally it focuses on the build up to a few weddings with the bride, who is often little more than a child, attending various fittings for what is usually monstrosity of a dress. This is mixed with some words of wisdom from the father of the bride, an occasional sentence from the groom, a lavish carriage to take the bridal party to the Church and then plenty of drink at the wedding reception. All this usually takes place in a part of the UK

where Irish travellers have settled. Occasionally the cameras take trip to the ‘Emerald Isle’. The Emerald Isle section of the programme involves taking the travellers back to their roots during the build up to the wedding. But on an edition aired on the More 4 channel last week they actually featured an Irish traveller wedding in Ireland and the location was Wexford. The programme was playing in the background but as soon as I heard the mention of Wexford I began to take notice. I don’t know if the edition in question was recorded a long time ago or not but it featured the wedding of

Nan Connors. We didn’t see as much of the build up as you would normally get in these situations, just a short interview with the girl as she made her preparations and then it was on to the day of the wedding. And the venue was the very picturesque Pugin Church at Barntown. There were pictures of

the Bridal party in the Church grounds and the cameras kept rolling until the bride went through the Church doors and that was that. Normally there is full coverage of the ceremony inside the church but in Barntown it was to the door and no further for the cameras. I wonder why!

remembered at an annual patron. This year’s patron takes place on Friday June 19th at 7.30pm and there will be tea/coffee etc for everyone afterwards in the nearby Coolcotts Community Centre. If you have a few minutes to spare you could do worse than go along.

How a reckless piece of parking blocked the traffic, the bridge and the train Talking about parking, some people are really reckless about where they park and delivery trucks appear to be the worst offenders. I have lot of sympathy for people trying to make deliveries in busy urban centres but some drivers display a complete disregard for others on a regular basis. However, it would be hard to beat the performance of the driver of a truck on Wexford quays last week. Not only did he park on a double yellow line and partially obstruct one lane of traffic but he angled his vehicle in such a way as

to obstruct the rail line as well. When the mid-day train from Dublin arrived in town it came to a halt along the quays until the lorry was moved. The position of the offending vehicle on the quay meant that when the train halted it blocked the entrance to the bridge so traffic quickly built up across the bridge on a busy June day. To be fair the lorry was moved pretty quickly but this type of thing really shouldn’t happen and when it does it should attract a severe penalty.

The end of ‘free parking’ Saturday The cost of all day parking for people working in our towns is always an issue but some clever drivers found a way of parking all day for free right in the centre of Wexford town every Saturday. The motorists would park up their vehicles in the morning in the Rowe Street Church car park and then return to their vehicles at teatime and wait until the barriers went up at 6.15pm to allow Saturday evening mass goers exit the church grounds before making their way out having secured free all day parking. The scam was only noticed when an increasing number of drivers started taking

advantage of the loop hole. Eventually there were so many all day parkers in the church grounds that there was no room for mass goers to park their cars. Now the free parking bonanza is at an end as the church authorities introduced a new system from last weekend. Those attending mass will now take a ticket on entering the car park which can be used to let them exit for free and with the barrier controls in place after mass the all day parkers will have to pay the full fee.

News Co. Council Diary Deirdre's imagination, Pip's farm, Kathleen's doggy bag, Joe's landlords, Robbie's Waterford walk Fr. Forde's one mistake and Denis O’Brien The June meeting of the Co. Council started with the usual votes of sympathy and not surprisingly there was one to the family of the late Fr. Water Forde who had died a few days earlier. Fr. Forde was of course involved in many community organisations and his role in these and his great contribution to the county was praised by Robbie Ireton who also mentioned that he had been a student of the late priest. Chairman, Malcolm Byrne, who had known Fr. Forde all his life in Gorey, paid tribute to his friend and commented on the many great things which he did for the county before adding ‘and then there was Robbie's education' Spare a thought for councillor Kathleen Codd Nolan. She had the pleasure of eating in a rather 'posh' restaurant recently with a group of friends. The food was fantastic. The only problem was that Kathleen and her friends could not finish it all. But they were in no mood to leave this fine food behind them so they asked for a 'Doggy Bag' to enable them to take the food home to consume later. 'Afraid not' was the answer and the waiter politely explained that due to health and safety concerns they could not provide the food to leave the

premises. "It might have like Pip.. killed the dog" suggested And then there was the Paddy Kavanagh. strange case of conflicts of But Kathleen's point was interest. His panic and intimidate people colleague George Lawlor out of legitimate choice to was equally exercised. use boycott as protest' There was no truth in the PEP councillor's statements at all, Paddy observed. It was all just part of Deirdre's vivid imagination. When Deirdre later suggested that the government was asking private landlords to act as debt collectors Paddy again suggested that her imagination was running wild. Martin Murphy wanted the government to reinstate the Early Retirement Scheme and Installation Grant for farmers. Pip Breen agreed because there needed to be Cllr Deirdre Wadding a way of providing opportunity for young farmers coming out of People should declare their education. interest, he charged as But Robbie Ireton was Fianna Fail councillors concerned for Pip. Doyle did admit to being a landlord and Tony Dempsey suggested that they were all landlords in the sense that they were elected councillors and the Council had thousands of tenants. 'Nonsense' charged George. When the vote came several Fianna Fail councillors abstained. 'The landed gentry' charged George pointing in the direction of the abstaining members. And then of course there was the ongoing issue of the distances that the public have to walk to get to the wards at Wexford General Hospital . Mary Farrell has been raising this issue without much success for some time. But Robbie Ireton was rather dismissive of her concerns. Only for Brendan Howlin built the new A&E and provided all the money for the hospital they'd be walking to Waterford, he suggested There was unity on a motion from Michael Sheehan calling for additional spurs to be added to the main gas pipeline to bring gas to rural and urban areas of the county. as long as Denis O’Brien didn’t get his hands on the installation. That would be a step too far for Deirdre Wadding. . This was Malcolm Byrne's final meeting in the Chair. From next month he will be back in the cast.

NWSPCA Report Woohooo - Kittens Sage, Beanie, Cosmo, Pumpkin, Hunter and Amber are among the lucky ones that left the NWSPCA for their new homes this week. Also dogs Heather, Lucy, Bluebell, Turk and Hunter joined their new humans.

Lottie

We wish you all the best of luck! Among many other canine pupils, the NWSPCA currently has 2 adorable little Jack Russell Terries looking for homes. Rocco is a fun-loving little JRT. He is busy and loves his walks, cuddles and his pals. At just over 1 year old, he is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and treated against kennel cough. Lottie is another one of our happy out JRT's. She loves company (human and canine), playing fetch, goofing about in general. Lottie

is also 1 year old and such a little bundle of fun! She is a small dog and just loves going for walks and playtime. Lottie is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and treated against kennel cough too. The North Wexford SPCA is always on the lookout for new volunteers to help in the kennels or cattery as well as in Rocco their charity shop on Rafter Street. Gorey councillors join Dunnes workers A number of Councillors joined with workers from Dunnes Stores in Gorey at the weekend protest concerning employment conditions in the company. The Chair of Wexford County Council, Malcolm Byrne was joined by Councillors Pip Breen, Anthony Donohoe and Joe Sullivan from the Gorey District and James Browne from Enniscorthy and they marched alongside the Gorey banner in Dublin. Due to ill health, Cllrs. Mary Farrell and Robbie Ireton sent apologies for the march. The Councillors stated that they support the workers

in their demands for fair employment conditions and will be urging their parties to support forthcoming legislation on this matter. They were particularly concerned at recent actions by Dunnes management that led to the Gorey store being closed. According to Cllr. Malcolm Byrne, "There is cross party support for the Dunnes' workers and their campaign should not be politicised. As Councillors, we were very happy to march with the workers and we will do whatever we can to support their case."

Co. Wexford gets new Fire Engine Fine Gael Sentaor for Co. Wexford, Michael D’Arcy has said that the announcement of a new fire engine for Co. Wexford fire service is very good news and will make a big difference to local fire fighters. “Co. Wexford fire service is receiving a real boost with this announcement of a new fire station engine. This is really good news for residents in Co. Wexford who will see the benefit of this additional fire protection, something we must take very seriously. “The fire engine for Co. Wexford is part of €8 million being distributed to buy appliances and equipment, to build or upgrade fire stations, upgrade the communications and mobilisation system and

improve training centres. “Investment in new fire appliances will ensure that the fleet is maintained and will further enhance the capability of the fire services. “As part of this funding, €2 million will be spent on restructuring the Computer Aided Mobilisation Project (CAMP) II infrastructure. The three CAMP stations will be transitioned into a single national CAMP structure which will offer significantly enhanced resilience and better valuefor-money. Improvements will also be made to training centres at a cost of €1 million. “This new fire engine will make a big difference to the excellent fire fighters who work extremely hard in Co. Wexford.”

Introduction I don’t know what happened last week, but I suppose with exams and all the rest we completely lost track of time and the paper

waits for no man . We’re back now though and I think we’ve a fairly good piece for you all! Leaving Cert weather is kicking in

Hot – The Republic of Ireland

and summer’s finally starting to look up! Hope you all enjoy and thanks for reading again.

This is our first time writing since the landmark bill in which Gay and Lesbian couples can get married got voted in by us the public. This day made us very proud to be Irish and the whole world stood up, watched and applauded Ireland.

TUNE OF THE WEEK Adam Lambert – Ghost Town

Not – FIFA

Haven’t really heard this get much radio time over the last few weeks put it’s an absolute cracker! I got asked for it at an 18th there about a week ago and hadn’t heard of it. It’s been on repeat since then! Go have a listen. - Adam Ennis

Disgraced governing body of football FIFA for a long time have been branded to be corrupt but only now has evidence been founded to prove so. Sepp Blatter the president of FIFA had his organisation ran like Nazi’s and was often classed as Hitler. They attacked the vulnerable and made the rich richer. One incident is giving Qatar a world cup to host. Qatar?? I thought this was an instrument, not a country but despite temperatures being as high as the core of the earth they got it and with a new city being built just to host the world cup on average 1 worker a day dies in Qatar due to horrible working conditions. Hopefully now when this is all put to bed, they can stop with all the scandals and get back to the sport! -Eoin Healy

Ridiculous Headlines Don’t even know where to start here with this, but I like to check out the headlines on all the papers while walking past them in the shops to see what is going on in the world today. This certain day a headline stuck out like a battered bird caught in a grill of a car. Now considering the day before this paper was released a cruise ship liner sunk in China, Syria once again came under attack and a petrol station exploded in Ghana killing over 70 people. Now these incidents are all headline worthy in my eyes but somehow none of them made headlines in certain national tabloid newspapers, Instead to my shock and disbelief a national newspaper had the headline ‘Willy Wonky’ and began to tell a story of how a man broke his willy while him and his girlfriend….... Now if breaking that gets people on the front of a newspaper I should be on the cover of the bible! I won’t name the newspaper but it sounds like son but is spelled like the big colourful yellow thing that you see in the sky in such places as Spain and Italy. Their ignorance in ignoring all that’s happening in the world and report a story like that is laughable more than anything but also disrespectful. Also in the news (somehow) this week was Michelle Keegan who played

that mint one Tina in Coronation Street and Mark Wright who appeared on The Only Way Is Essex. They were bug because………they got married …. A big woopdy-doo who gives a toss?? But they made the headlines for getting married because their big day cost 1 million pound … but what wasn’t reported was that a magazine paid the couple 1.5 million for exclusive pictures of their wedding . Now once again I won’t get in trouble for naming the magazine but it’s the opposite of ‘Goodbye’. Obviously they got married because they’re in love and not the fact they made a cool 500k for doing so …. Congrats Here’s whatt really gets me; a broken Willy and a plastic couple who got married for money make headline news, but Senegalese-American singer Akon made his long awaited return, not to drop the hottest single of 2015 but to invest most of his wealth in a massive project that is brining electricity to 600 million

Leaving Cert Buzz The Leaving Cert is coming to an end shortly and most of the pressure should be lifted by now, which is great. It’s probably the first year since I did my exams where I really pitied the students doing theirs. Last year I was just happy it wasn’t me. This year I’ve been talking to students and remembering exactly what they’re going through.

people across the continent of Africa by using solar power. In the process he is employing a hell of a lot of people. Now I ask …. How is this not newsworthy?? This only came to the knowledge of the public because Snoop Dogg posted it on Instagram, I’m 100% sure that this is a better news story than a broken Willy. Maybe I’m wrong now but I don’t think so!! -Eoin Healy

I think the amount of stress students are put under for a set of exams is ridiculous. There are students in Wexford dropping out of 6th year, going to counselling because of the pressure they’re put under. Now fair enough, some students might take the stress better than others and work a bit harder, but what about the 17 and 18 year olds that aren’t as headstrong and are depressed and anxious for a year over a few exams? It seems like certain schools don’t care once they still have their top achievers with 625 points at the end of the year.

I’ve been talking to a good few Leaving Cert students over the past month and some of the stories I’ve been told are just crazy – girls going to counselling to help them deal with the stress teachers are placing on them, students dropping out of school with absolutely nothing to do next year. It’s crazy to think any school is putting students’ results over their mental health and that’s exactly what some of them are doing. I know the schools in most cases are just trying to do their best with an already

flawed system but I can’t help feeling that in certain situations they’re creating unnecessary problems for people. At the end of the day, they’re exams. Yes, they’re important to get into college and all that, but it’s important to put things into perspective and they’re not worth letting yourself get too stressed over. Do your best and try get into whatever course you want to do, if that doesn’t happen through the LC, there’s always ways around it. Adam Ennis

LARRY O’GORMAN

The man who gets Behind the Sports Headlines

It's time to skin the Cats It's time to skin the Cats. Yes folks that's Kilkenny for those of you who live under a stone or spend your time in a dark room. Our hurlers travel to Nowlan Park this coming weekend to take on their old rivals in the Leinster SemiFinal and it will be a mighty game for us. Taking on Kilkenny on their home turf is never easy and I have no reason to believe it will be any different in 2015 than it has ever been.. And no matter what the doubters say about Kilkenny the fact is they are still AllIreland Champions and only a fool, or a fanatic would underestimate their strengths. I know full well that they have had a lot of retirements with J J Delaney, Tommy Walsh, Brian Hogan and of course 'King' Henry all leaving the scene. A normal team would not be heard of for a few years if they suffered such defections in the one go but time and again Kilkenny have proven that they are no ordinary team. But there is hope and the hope is that with these retirements Kilkenny are not as strong as they once were and maybe we could catch them on the hop. But before you guys start running away with your imagination let us

and sticking to the game plan will see us coming up short, and possibly very short. Wexford will be selecting fromSo a full panel so whatever what's happening it team lines out lets the championshipget so behind far. the boysDublin and give Have lostthem theirevery support. TheyClare will need all. way? Have lost itittoo or is it just Davy??What’s happening to Cork they looked lost??? To be honest I am lost for words ( would you believe that). Things looking good for these teams so far. Laois look good so far Galway are looking very good..Waterford are looking better than good.So the championship so far is looking good. So that's it for now good luck.

Championship update

remember that Kilkenny have won more All-Irelands in the last ten years than Wexford have managed to collect over the past one hundred years. I know it pains me to say it but it's a fact and it is also the type of reality check that some Wexford fans need the week before we take on our old rivals. But times change and this is a time of real change, particularly for Kilkenny and the fact that their line up will look so different this year will give a lot of teams hope. Some sides may not fear them as much as they have in the past. Now that may be foolish but I think it is a fact. What about us. Well we always fear Kilkenny. I think if they put their grandmothers in jerseys we would still be a bit afraid of them that's just the way it is. But the absence of some of

the legends who have retired should give our lads that bit of extra belief that they are on a more level par with their opponents this year. and they have got to believe they can cause an upset.. So do I think Wexford have a chance. Yes I do actually. It is a fact that a lot of the guys on this team have not been on the wrong side of heavy defeats in the championship in recent years so they will have that bit less fear in them. It is also a fact that we haven't come up against Kilkenny as regularly in recent years as we used to and that may be a factor. It should help us believe that we are capable of competing on the same stage as Kilkenny and if the lads go out with confidence, stick to their game plan and give 100% then there is no reason why they cannot win. But anything less than 100%

No sign of Joe Brolly on the Sunday Game yet ( himself and Marty still on their honeymoon I think). Who needs Brolly when the sun is shining anyway. Don't forget your sambos for the big game and if you have time don't forget to stop and pick up your strawberrys on the way. Good luck to the boys of Wexford believe and you will achieve .
