Bishop cuts priests in five parishes The steady decline in the number of active clergy in the Diocese of Ferns has forced Bishop Denis Brennan to cut priests from several parishes with an increasing number of churches now set to have no priest in residence. Among the parishes losing a priest are two of the most populated in the diocese, Wexford town and Clonard. Wexford town will now have just three priests serving its two churches.

Screen/Curracloe, The Ballagh, Murrintown and Rathgarogue all lose their priests. In future Screen/Curracloe will be served by the parish priest of Castlebridge while the PP in Piercestown will look after Murrintown and the Parish Priest of Oulart will look after The Ballagh. Rathgarogue will be served from Cushinstown. Writing in this week's Chronicle the Diocesan spokesman Fr John Carroll confirms that this policy is to

be implemented on an ongoing basis as the reducing number of active clergy in the diocese begins to have an effect. Over time all churches in a parish will be served by a single priest and with many priests who were ordained in the 1960s still active in Ferns a steady stream of retirements over the next few years will result in several churches being without priests in the nearer future. Fewer priests, parishes without a priest, an ageing clergy, vocations down... All of these phrases have been about for quite some time now, but in Ferns they have until relatively recently - only been thought to apply to other dioceses, or other countries. That has now clearly changed. And the truth is that it has been changing bit by bit almost unnoticed - over the past 10 to 15 years. The recent round of clerical changes in the Diocese of Ferns has resulted in the announcement that a priest will no longer be resident in Rathgarogue, Murrintown, Screen / Curracloe and the Ballagh. Both Wexford and Clonard parishes are down a priest also. This is a very changed landscape. And one that both priest and people find difficult and painful. The stark fact is that today, there are fewer and fewer priests in Ferns Diocese. And they are older. And this is not likely to change any time soon. In 1985, there were 42 students for the priesthood in Ferns. The diocese had priests at St. Peter's College, the House of Missions, many were on loan to other Dioceses in Ireland and further afield, and the Diocese had a very vibrant mission in Brazil. None of these are now realities for Ferns. At present, we have three students studying for the priesthood. And there are not enough Ferns priests to fill the number of parish postings available in the Diocese. This has resulted in the need for parish priests to begin covering both their parishes and their curacy or curacies. "Doubling up" and "trebling

up" is the new lingo in a Diocese that is it needs to be remembered - still better staffed than most other dioceses in the European or Anglo American Catholic worlds. Yet the gap narrows. And it is doing so very quickly. Current projections based on the demographics of serving clergy do show that the number of places without a resident priest is likely to grow significantly in the short to medium Fr. Browne leads attack on lone parent cuts Enniscorthy Fianna Fail councillor James Browne this week led an assault by his party locally on the recent cut to lone parent allowances. Cllr Browne made the

attack by way of notice of motion to the July meeting of the Co. Council when he called on his colleagues to deplore the cuts and also the failure of the Tanaiste Joan

Burton to ensure that Scandanavian style child care facilities were in place prior to the changes so that lone parents could take up employment.

Another attack on Rackard There has been another attack on the Nicky Rackard statute in Wexford town. Last year it cost noire than €4,000 to repair damage to one of the great hurler’s arms. Last week on the night of a major function in a local nightclub vandals attacked the statute of the famous hurler again and the damage is currently being assessed. The statue is located in Selskar Square and at the time of its erection there was considerable controversy over its location.

Minister and Mrs Underwood open Nursing Home Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin is a man well used to making cuts, but he was put into the shade by Eileen Underwood, the first resident of Wygramn Nursing Home in Wexford town when he shared the official opening duties with her last week.

The Minister, who was on hand to perform the official duties at the opening of the magnificent new facility, handed Mrs Underwood the scissors to cut the ribbon saying he was used to cutting things all the time. But that lady proved to be

an even more enthusiastic cutter than the Minister and sliced the ribbon in two before the photographers had a chance to set themselves up for the photo. Minister Howlin proaised the group of people who had come together to develop the

Three Local Businesses to win “game-changing” Investment Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur Competition gets underway around the country, with €50,000 to be won by three local businesses. Three young enterprising people from Wexford can win a “game-changing” investment for their business, through Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur competition. That’s according to the Local Enterprise Office Wexford, which is rolling out the IBYE competition this month. The enterprising winners, who must all be aged between 18 and 30, will be awarded an investment prize of between €10,000 and €20,000 each to put straight into their business or to help fund a business idea. The competition is part of the Action Plan for Jobs and was launched last month by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny. T.D. and the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mr. Richard Bruton T.D. The closing date to enter online through www.ibye.ie is Friday, July 31st and the competition is only open to those aged between 18 and 30 with an existing business or with an idea for a new one. Minister Richard Bruton said: “The prizes involved can be game-changing for a new business. The investment can be used to buy a new piece of equipment for example or it can be used to help pay the salary of a new employee joining the team. The experience of last year’s IBYE winners shows the great benefit that this competition can bring. We have a growing number of entrepreneurs here in Ireland, but we don’t have enough of them. Through Ireland’s Best

Young Entrepreneur competition, we’re encouraging more young people to consider setting up a business as a career choice - and the supports on offer through IBYE can help them deliver on that”. The Local Enterprise Office Wexford has €50,000 to invest in three local businesses or start-ups. The three categories in the competition are: Best Idea (€10,000 investment prize), Best Start-Up (€20,000 investment prize) and Best Established Business (€20,000 investment prize). Last year’s county winners were: Ian Coleman (LifeBites) – Best Business Idea, Mark Whitney (Pillar Healthcare) – Best Start-Up, and Bláithín Ennis (Bláithín Ennis) – Best Established Business. Ian went on to represent #TeamWexford at the National Final held in Dublin. In the 2014 IBYE competition, Philip Martin used his prize money to buy specialist machinery, helping him to open Ireland’s first tortilla-making factory in Tipperary (National Winner: 2014 Best Business Idea). The investment prize also helped Eamon Keane take on highly skilled staff at Xpreso Software in South Dublin (National Winner: 2014 Best Start Up Business/ Overall Winner). The funds also helped Dean Gammell from Westmeath to expand his group booking software business into the UK (National Winner: 2014 Best

Established Business). In addition to investment prizes, additional supports are being offered to those entering, as Deirdre McGing, Enterprise Executive, from the Local Enterprise Office Wexford explains: “As well as three local winners, who will share the €50,000 investment fund, up to 500 young entrepreneurs and business owners will also be invited to take part in Business Bootcamps around the country, helping them finely tune their business plans and to learn new enterprise skills. One-to-one mentoring and business coaching will also be available, through all 31 Local Enterprise Offices. ” July 31st is the deadline to enter the competition through www.ibye.ie and there are no entry fees. Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland and the Local Enterprise Offices. Further competition details are available by searching #ibye on social media. For all queries around Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur Competition, please contact your Local Enterprise Office. Interview opportunities are available with 2014 County Winners for #IBYE, along with representatives of the Local Enterprise Office.

Where was the Labour Stand we wondered. Sinn Fein suggested they had a two man tent which could be very difficult to find in the crowd. Anyway we had enough of politics by this stage but somehow thoughts of politics and politicians came to me when I saw a stall offering free checks on backs and necks. But it had nothing to do with thick necks instead it was a Chiropratic Doctor offering free advice to those with a pain in their necks.

‘You cannot beat a Bannow/Rathangan Meat Tea’ Paddy Kavanagh. Well not Paddy, but his bull. The not yet quite two year old is a splendid specimen of an animal and is winning all before him at the moment, much to Paddy's delight. In the celebration of victory he was even persuaded to hug

A Show like Bannow often shines a light into the past and an Ireland that is rapidly vanishing. Country music, blares from many stands and there is a fair bit of vintage machinery on show. But it is also a place where the past meets the present and future. With more and more people working from home those with This man says he will help you please the wife and children at the poor inadequate same time broadband, and to be fair they are Tea'. Many of the other stalls have been in place for years, of course, and they continue to do a healthy trade offering everything from outfits for your dog to a type of plasticine from which children can make up their own toys. I was almost lost for words before he explained that the children could play with it to their hearts' content but it did not stick to anything and didn't leave a mess so the children were happy and the wife would be happy because she would have nothing to clean up. I quickly moved on

an early hour in the show jumping ring while dogs of all age,s shapes and sizes were being paraded around in search of rosettes. Paddy Kavanagh was King of the Cattle Class but nearby the focus was on the sheep and if the dogs came in all shapes and sizes the sheep were out of this world when it came to variety. For me a day at the show would not be complete without the marvellous Bannow/Rathangan 'Meat

being well looked after again next year. Their efforts form a great part of what this Show is all about and why it is so successful. I never did find the two man tent which allegedly housed The Labour Party but as I was about to leave there was an announcement for 'the donkeys to please proceed to ring 3' and afterwards the three political tents did appear to be rather empty. I'm sure it was just a coincidence.

GER WALSH North Wexford just got closer to Dublin, but the train is as slow ever North Wexford and Gorey in particular has just got a lot closer to Dublin with the opening of the final stretch of duel carriageway through Co. Wicklow. Journey times will be considerably improved with the opening of the new road making it much more convenient for those who want to commute regularly to work in Dublin. This is certain to bring considerable benefit to the general North Wexford area making it a more attractive place to live and that in turn can only be good for the overall economy of the area. But the improvement in the road will bring other challenges and one of them is in relation to the rail service. A good speedy rail service to Dublin is vital for any developing commuter

town but unfortunately Gorey and Wexford in general is sadly lacking in this respect. The east coast is the poor relation when it comes to the quality of rail services in Ireland. Irish Rail will no doubt make the point that passenger numbers on the line are low when compared with other parts of the country and that is probably true. However, that is only half of the story. If you provide and

infrequent slow running train service on any line it is inevitable that it will not be as widely used as services on lines which are more frequent and faster. The problems with the

trains on the Wexford route are caused by the quality of the line in certain areas but

also the lack of passing points at regular intervals which can see some trains having to wait a quarter of an hour or more at a station to allow an oncoming service to pass. With the improvement in the road to Dublin the train will seem even more third world if improvements are not made to the service. This is a point which has been made in recent times by two members of Wexford Co. Council, Ger Carthy, who is now Mayor of Wexford and Malcolm Byrne, the recently elected Chair of the Gorey Municipal District. Housing is another area

where a pressure point arises as the quality of the road improves. As Gorey and the North of the County become more attractive dwelling places for people who work in the Capital there will inevitably be upward price pressure on houses in the area and locals could be in danger of being prices out of the market. There will be a need to ensure that a greater supply of houses comes on stream in the North of the County if serious issues are not to arise in the years ahead. Closeness to Dublin, where the recession is well and truly over, can bring many opportunities for North Wexford, but to take advantage of those opportunities proper infrastructure will have to be put in place.

WEXFORD RACES

Joy may be short lived for the Greeks I was amused by all the singing, dancing and celebrating in the streets of Athens following the 'No' vote in the referendum on the bailout. I couldn't actually understand what all the celebrating was about unless the citizens thought by rejecting the terms that were on the table money would somehow miraculously flow back into the country again. It seemed to me that what they were celebrating was akin to being joyous because you not longer had to jump off a cliff but had to jump off a mountain top instead. Certainly, regardless of what happens with new bailouts or programmes the ordinary people of Greece face a long period of suffering and hardship and there will be no quick fix for them, regardless of what those in power might promise.

Now rural Wexford is losing its priests First it was schools, then Post Offices, then Garda Station and now its the churches. People in rural areas are having a tough time coming to terms with the reality that bit by bit services which they took for granted for generations are slowly disappearing.. In the case of the latest development with several rural parishes losing priests there will be little point in having the same type of political protest usually associated with the downgrading of rural services. The reality behind the withdrawal of a priest in residence in places like Murrintown and The Ballagh is that there simply are no longer enough priests to go around and a single priest covering every church in a parish will be the norm in the not too distant future. Diocesan spokesman John Carroll explains the situation very well in an article elsewhere in this issue but I suppose the big surprise is

how the impact of the falling number of active priests in the diocese has not been realised by people before now. In fact that is a tribute to Bishop Brennan for the manner in which he has handled the withdrawal of priests from various locations. And it is not just the rural areas that are being affected. Clonard and Wexford town have both lost priests in the latest round of appointments with Wexford town now served by just three priests in total. Of course given the big fall off in the number of people activity participating in the Church it could be argued that the ratio of priests to practicing

Catholics is as good or better than ever. The problem of course is, practising or not everyone feels entitled to have a priest on hand in a time of need and very often on their terms. Well people will have to get used to the fact that the world is changing and fewer and older priests will have to mean a different type of Church in the Diocese of Ferns in the years ahead.

Well what did you think of the pram? Yes the one in which was used to wheel the latest member of the British Royal family to her chastening.. I can understand that they did not want to go for a modern baby carrier but to choose something that would not have been out of place in 'Upstairs Downstairs' was really going a bit far. It looked like something you would pick up in a charity auction, or maybe even retrieve from landfill site following the clear out of an old house. Well I'm sure it was in perfect condition but sadly

that's what it looked like. What were William and

Kate thinking ? Whatever it was it didn't work.

Dick will be missed by many I was very saddened to hear of the totally unexpected death last weekend of Dick Murphy the mainstay of the CYMS in Wexford for many years. Dick collapsed and died in the Wexford Arms pub. A native of Island Road in Enniscorthy he had lived in Wexford town for many years.

A very fine neighbour and all round decent guy Dick will be sorely missed by his wife Marie and son Ken. He took great pride in his garden and it was not unusual for him to present samples of his latest tomato crop to the customers in the local pub who had to eat them there and then before giving their verdict on the crop that Dick

had grown. It was ironic that he should pass away at the very time he was heavily involved in the winding up of the Wexford branch of the CYMS. He devoted a lot of time, effort and a great part of his life to the club and there is something fitting in a way about the fact that it will not go on without him.

else. We get no summer holidays! Hope you all enjoy and thanks for reading again!

TUNE OF THE WEEK DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince – Summertime With The Stores Annual Beach Party last week and seeing as it’s summer I thought this was pretty fitting. Absolutely timeless. “ Just a little something to break the monotony of all that hardcore dance that has gotten to be a little bit out of control.” Probably my favourite summer song ever!

USELESS FACT OF THE WEEK A Chinese man hand carved 6000 steps up the side of a mountain because his wife wanted to live there. He worked on them alone every day from 1951 to 2001.

RANT OF THE WEEK I saw a status on Facebook during the week basically where a girl found a purse, gave it back to the owner and then told everyone about it on Facebook and yeah, fair enough, it was sound of her for finding the woman who owned it.. but feeling the need to put up a status about it telling everyone that she did the right thing…? Firstly, surely that’s just being a decent person, and secondly, seeking praise on Facebook for any good deed is just pathetic like. Basically what I’m trying to say is stop seeking praise for everything you do on Facebook. Thanks xo

Not – Don’t Judge Challenge So, this week saw another ridiculous social media craze. Basically the ‘Don’t judge’ challenge is where people make themselves as ugly as they can by drawing spots and stuff on their face and then suddenly get all done up and look way better than they did. The whole idea behind it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. “Don’t judge a book by its cover” doesn’t just apply when the person has fake spots on their face. Sort it out Facebook.

I thought I’d use this week’s piece for a bit of good this time. If people could keep an eye out for someone riding around on this bike over the next while, that’d be much appreciated. It was stolen from a garden in Mount Prospect last week and after the young lad bought it with his confirmation money, you can only imagine how annoyed the family are over it. As you can see from the picture, it’s pretty distinctive. Let me know on Facebook if you come across it pleeeease!

Riverdance Kilmore style It's a sort of Riverdance Kilmore style, maybe not as spectacular but every bit as entertaining and it is now the confirmed centre piece of the

Sunday afternoon at the Seafood Festival. It's the Ceili Mor where locals and visitors step it out to the best in Irish music and the

Young and old turnout for the Kilmore parade

event creates a tremendous atmosphere in the seaside village as the crowds enjoy the various trade stalls and attractions.. This was a big birthday for the Kilmore event as it turned the big three zero. The festival was created with the twin aims of promoting the fish produce of Kilmore and to raise money for community developments. And it has certainly delivered on both in spades with the massive developments around Kilmore a testimony to the funds raised by the festival over the years. While the music stalls and various events are an important part of the festival no visit to the village would be complete without sampling the delightful seafood platter in the Stella Maris centre. Local volunteers prepare the

food and serve the tables. On the menu they ask for the indulgence of the customers pleading that they are just volunteers for the weekend. Such a notice was in no way necessary and many top class restaurants would be very happy to be able to provide either the quality of the food or quality of service which was on display in the Stella Maris Centre on Sunday. It all got underway on Thursday night with the annual parade prior to the official opening. The weather was a bit mixed over the four days with Saturday in particular being less than kind by Sunday the sun was shining on the village and the Seafood Festival could be judged another wonderful success.

Luke’s Lines

Luke Kennedy

it does become something watchable as it goes on. Like a lot of modern comedy, this film is low brow and crude, and not in a quaint Carry On or Benny Hill type way either. Like a lot of modern comedy, it’s clear that the intended demographic is teenagers. I don’t have any problems with such humour and often enjoy it, but if that type of comedy is not to your taste, you won’t enjoy Ted 2. The plot of the film is that Ted has become married to a human woman ,Tami Lynn (Played by Jessica Barth), a stereotype of the rowdy, trashy, resident of Boston that, as Mark Wahlbergs real life antics demonstrate, probably has more truth to it then people from Boston would like to admit. Ted also intends to have a child with this woman, somehow. The Government soon finds out about this and has Ted’s ability to get married or have a job stripped away by law and he is declared a piece of property. He then has to fight his case in

Ted 2 Review Ted 2 is more of the same Seth Macfarlane, the Creator of Ted, the foul mouthed sentient teddy bear, has a monopoly on American comedy at the moment. He has three separate animated TV shows running simultaneously on TV, those shows being Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show, as well as three movies that have all come out since 2012, Ted, A Million Ways to Die In The West, and Ted 2. So, how does Ted 2 fit into all of this?

Whether you like Ted 2 is pretty much dependent on whether you like any other of Seth MacFarlane’s material or the first Ted film. it is really is more of the same with pop culture references, celebrity cameos (such as Liam Neeson and Jay Leno) and gross out gags (a sequence where John , the main human character, becomes a sperm donor springs to mind) are all the order of the day in this film. There are funny or entertaining moments scattered through the film, and while at first it feels pointless,

Thirty extra SNA posts for Co. Wexford – D’Arcy Fine Gael Senator for Co. Wexford, Michael D’Arcy, has said that the decision to appoint over 600 additional Special Needs Assistant posts from September 2015 reflects the government’s commitment to ensure that every child with an assessed need has access to a SNA. “Today’s announcement means that 30 additional SNA posts are being created in Co. Wexford. This will bring the total number of SNA posts in Co. Wexford schools to 374 this September. “These extra posts mean that every child assessed as

needing an SNA will have access to one, which comes as welcome news to parents across the country. When a child is assessed as having a particular care need it is vital that the support needed is delivered. This is essential to help each child reach his or her potential and to help them get the most out of their time in school. “The Government has also decided to carry out a review of the SNA scheme to ensure that it is meeting its objectives and that best use is being made of the significant resources invested. Among the issues to

be examined will be the reasons behind the significant increase in demand evident this year and how the timing of applications and allocations can be better aligned with the school year. “It has been a consistent policy of Fine Gael in Government to increase the number of SNAs in our schools. From September there will be 11,820 wholetime SNA posts available in our primary and post-primary schools. This is an 11.7% increase since this Government came to office.

Mature cats looking for homes With so many kittens on the scene at the moment, some of the more mature cats with the NWSPCA are sadly being overlooked. Such a pity as they are little gems! Tootsie is just one of these cats. A gentle, funny & chatty lady Tootsie is 3 to 4 years old. She has

court so that he can be given the same rights as everyone else. Anyone else would have left the audience find out real life parallels to this scenario by themselves, but Seth MacFarlane has no subtlety as a writer and has characters loudly announce how this is similar to how gay people and minorities have been treated in real life. Any film that claims to be pro human rights while hiring Mark Wahlberg is hypocritical as I’ll explain in the next paragraph. Mark Walhberg plays John, the main human character and Ted’s life long friend, with an easy going, good natured type of everyman charm to him. The fact that it’s even semi convincing is amazing considering the fact that Mark

Walhberg physically assaulted a innocent Asian man and called him racial slurs , when he was younger, in real life. The fact that this crime of his has been completely forgotten by the

public and he has enjoyed all the pleasures of wealth and fame since then is testament to the power of that same wealth and fame in our culture. A scumbag doesn’t become a prince just because you pay him a lot of money. So the fact that Mark Wahlberg is able to pull off this role in Ted 2 at all makes him both a good actor in the movies, and I suspect, an excellent liar in real life. However, the truth is, I cannot afford to get on my high horse about this. After all, I paid to go see a film with this man in it. I am part of the problem. Normally, I wouldn’t recommend this sort of thing. However, even if you want to watch this film, I wouldn’t advise rushing out to go see this film in the cinema. There are funny moments and the film is alright overall, but like I said, it’s more of the same and Seth Macfarlane and Mark Wahlberg already have too much money as it is. Wait until they start showing it on TV and you can watch it for free, that’s my advice.

LARRY O’GORMAN

The man who gets Behind the Sports Headlines

Hurling is not dead, but maybe Liam should consider his position All our hopes and dreams for a summer of hurling are dead and buried following the defeat to Cork and our humiliation by Kilkenny a few weeks earlier. But is hurling itself dead and buried in this county? That is the question many people are starting to ask after the very disappointing championship of 2015. What is puzzling a lot of people is how the passion we demonstrated on so many occasions last year has so tamely evaporated. And you would have to say that when it comes to a game plan and tactics we also look a bit clueless at the moment. Take for example our decision to play against the wind against Cork having won the toss.

That handed an immediate advantage to our opponents and we never recovered from it. As a result the game was dead and buried at half time when Cork had a fourteen point lead. Yes we did huff and puff a bit in the second half and closed the gap considerably but the Cork defence was strong and the outcome of this game was never really in doubt. Some would say that playing against a gale force wind was like shooting yourself in the foot and certainly that decision had a decisive impact on this game. So after this very disappointing season attention turns to Liam and the management team and not surprisingly people are

beginning to ask if it is time for a change in that area. A lot of people seem to want change and they want it now. Liam has another year to run in his term but I believe he should think strongly about his position. But if he does go who will replace him and will it make any difference?. That is the question we must all ask. Some people are suggesting that JJ Doyle could latke over following his success with the under 21 players where he has brought a great spirit to the team. But there is a big gap between under 21 and senior and JJ will be fully aware of this. If Liam goes and JJ doesn't want the job where do we go?. I am not sure

that there would be a lot of people queuing up for the job. Whoever gets it faces an enormous task trying to turn things around and the whole thing takes a mighty effort and commitment from start to finish. And then, of course, there is the negativity, some justified, and some not, but it is constant. But back to the original question. Is hurling dead in Wexford and just awaiting Turk Kearney to arrive to take it to the grave?. Well no I don't think so. There have been instances of Resurrections before and we have got to keep believing and hopefully hurling in this county will rise from the ashes left behind by the campaign of 2015.

Finally we skin the Cats Well for all you doubters out there who gave me such a hard time over suggesting that the seniors might skin the Cats wasn't the performance of the under 21s magnificent. They well and truly skinned the Cats in

Wexford Park and what great support they had on the night. It was great to see and everyone was able to enjoy the occasion because the result was beyond doubt pretty early in the game which is something we are not used

to except when we are being hammered. These guys really brought some pride back to Wexford hurling and let's hope now that they can go all the way and bring All Ireland honours back to the county.

No word from the Queen Did you notice we had no word from the Queen this year. She was glued to her TV in the summer of 2014 watching Wexford's exploits but not a word from her this year. I know she had a christening last weekend so maybe that distracted her-------it was probably just as well.

She'll have been watching the tennis last week. Anyway who cares what she was doing. I have been enjoying juicy Wexford strawberries for weeks. I don't need to go to Wimbledon to get them. That's it folks, enjoy the rest of the summer.

It's Tipp for me We won't have a big interest in it but the hurling world will be watching some very exciting games with interest over the next seven weeks before one county eventually lifts All Ireland honours.

I have fancied Tipperary all along and see no reason to change at this stage, but the Cats will always be dangerous. But you know what, I don't really care.
