ISSUE Wednesday NO. 39 April 15, 2015

Elderly left exhausted by hospital walk Elderly visitors to Wexford General Hospital are in danger of having to be admitted as patients by the time they walk the long distance from the new hospital entrance to the wards, it has emerged. When the new A&E Department was opened at the hospital last year the existing entrance was closed to the public and a new entrance opened at the far end of the hospital. This entrance is at the opposite end of the building to where the wards are and it

has now emerged that the realignment of the entrance as part of the construction work has caused havoc for elderly people visiting loved ones in the hospital. The issue was first raised at a meeting of Gorey Municipal Council earlier this year but the matter has now been taken up by the full Co. Council as efforts to reopen the original entrance are intensified. The problem was first brought to public attention by Councillor Mary Farrell who works in the disability

sector. While visiting the hospital to see a patient she was shocked by the distance that had to be walked to get to the ward and she has told of the terrible plight faced by the elderly and those with mobility issues as they struggle to make the journey from the hospital entrance. She revealed that some people are facing exhaustion by the time they complete the journey and her call to have the original entrance reopened has already won the backing of her colleagues in the Gorey Municipal

Council. However, there has been no move on the matter from the HSE which is why the issue was brought before the full Co. Council this week. It is understood that the original entrance was closed due to security considerations when the new reception area was opened.

Anne (93) is still a volunteer worker Local volunteer Anne Ennis recently celebrated her 93rd birthday but has no intention of retiring having volunteered at the Oxfam shop in Wexford for 24 years. From Wexford town, Anne volunteers at the shop on North Main Street three days a week, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and on Friday afternoons, making a significant contribution to the charity’s work worldwide. Anne said: “I have been volunteering at Oxfam Wexford since it opened 24 years ago. It is a lovely shop

and hasn’t changed that much since the beginning – it is immaculate as always. “I really enjoy volunteering at the shop. It gets me out of the house and I love the customers who come in and out, many of whom are regulars and who know me by my first name. “I also love the people I work with on my shifts and sometimes we go for a bit of lunch after finishing up. On my 80th birthday the staff and volunteers treated me very well with a cake in the shop and they even brought

News Witnesses sought in shooting incident Gardaí in Enniscorthy are still appealing for members of the public to come forward following a gun attack on a house in Friary Place on Easter Saturday Morning. The attack saw shots fired at the downstairs of the house while the owner, a forty year old male, was asleep upstairs.

The road was immediately sealed off by Gardaí and a forensic examination was carried out at the scene, however, Gardaí have no definitive line of enquiry in relation to the attack, but they are appealing for witnesses who may have been in the area at approximately 2.30 a.m. and

saw anything suspicious to come forward to them at Enniscorthy Garda Station. Locals reported hearing several shots and the owner of the house is not believed to be known to Gardaí. The incident led to speculation that there may link between the shooting incident

and the presence of more armed Gardaí on the streets of Enniscorthy in recent weeks, however, Gardaí have said that their presence in the region has been part of an operation to prevent and uncover burglaries that are taking place across Enniscorthy.

Courtown harbour to close for summer In what seemed like a poorly timed and extremely late April fools joke, it has emerged that Courtown Harbour will be drained and closed to boats for the entire summer as repair works on the piers and walls are carried out and the harbour basin is deepened. Council engineers announced that the project will cost €2 million and a meeting was held with local fishermen and business owners on Thursday to address any concerns. The project is set to have a significant impact on

summer trade in Courtown as people wishing to moor at the harbour will be directed elsewhere while work is ongoing. Cllr Robbie Ireton said that it was ‘impossible’ to delay the work until after the busy summer period saying that the project has had two extensions already. The funding allocated for the work must be spent before the end of November. As part of rock armour reinstatement, parts of Courtown beach will be cordoned off at various stages during the summer and vehicular access to the

Burrow car park will be restricted. Both piers in the harbour are said to be in bad shape and the harbour basin was described as being ‘filled up with silt.’

Boat owners have already started moving their vessels from Courtown to nearby Arklow or Wexford for the summer.

Motorists breath sigh of relief Potholes are expected to become a thing of the past at two of Wexford town’s most badly damaged roads as it emerged that €500,000 in funding had been allocated for their repair. The R741 between Wexford and Castlebridge and R733 Distillery Road in Wexford town have long been the bane of drivers’ lives as they moved to avoid potholes which have been known to cause damage to the wheels of passing cars. The roads are both extremely heavily used and drivers were at their wits end, however there was good news in the form of funding with €350,000 being awarded to the Castlebridge road and €150,00 to Distillery Road.

The funding will cover strengthening works, footpaths and drainage works on the R741 and strengthening works to Distillery road which caters for a high volume of residential and commercial traffic. Coucillors were delighted with the announcement, particularly Mayor George Lawlor who has been calling for action on the roads for some time. Resurfacing work is due to get underway towards the beginning of June.

Great news for Wexford Schools There were celebrations in Principal’s offices around the county this week as it emerged that a total of 17 Wexford schools will benefit from the Summer Works Scheme this year. An investment of €36million is being made in 559 schools across the country under the scheme this summer and will bring the total investment in small and medium scale works at schools to €108m. Our Lady of Lourdes in New Ross is the only secondary school in Wexford to be allocated money, with the rest being national schools. The New Ross school, along with seven national schools have been awarded the funding specifically for school windows. The national schools include Scoil Naisiunta Bhantarna Lourdes in Bunclody, SN Clochar Mhuire in Rosslare, SN Cul Greine in Coolgreany, Oulart NS, St Leaonard’s NS Ballycullane, St Senan’s NS Enniscorthy and Kilrane NS. Quality of pot-hole repairs are defended The man charged with responsibility for maintaining Co. Wexford’s roads says he is fed up listening to claims that in other countries they are better at maintaining the road network by using better product and more effective methods. Executive Engineer Noel O’Driscoll told councillors at the March meeting that he was happy with the materials being used to fill potholes and he also defended the general standard of work. There had been questioning of the type of work carried out in pot hole repairs by Fergie Kehoe and Keith

Doyle. Cllr Kehoe said weather conditions were always blamed for the reappearance of pot-holes but places like Finland had much more extreme weather and didn’t encounter the same problems while Cllr. Keith Doyle questioned the method used to compact filling into pot-holes. But Mr O’Driscoll said they had the same problems in other countries including Finland. It also emerged during the debate that while more than €19m is collected in car tax annually in the county less than half of this comes back

by way of a national grant for road repairs. This drew strong criticism from Cllr. Anthony Kelly and others but Chief Executive Tom Enright said this was not really relevant pointing out the massive investment which would take place in the county on the Enniscorthy bypass from next year.. The funding for roads in Wexford has been cut by 45% since 2008 but Mr O’Driscoll agreed with Cllr. Paddy Kavanagh that better value for money was being achieved now. Materials had dropped in price, he indicated.

GER WALSH There will always be problems when people abuse A&E and use ambulances as a taxi service I was struck recently by a debate in Britain over the state of the health service. As part of the general election campaign, currently raging in that country, opposition politicians were putting the government under pressure over the problems in hospitals. They talked of waiting lists, falling standards and problems getting into A&E. So bad were the A&E difficulties as presented by the opposition, that it wasn’t a case of being stuck on a trolley in the Department for hours but people were finding it difficult to even get inside the doors with ambulances having to queue up outside awaiting their turn. It seems the health service and hospitals are a never ending problem in every country. It could be argued that more money would do something to ease the problem and that no doubt is the case, It could be argued too that better management of existing resources would deliver better service for everyone, and that is also a fact. It could further be argued that a better deployment of staff and better targeting of staff resources would also bring improvements.

While this would probably be disputed by some who work in the health service it is nevertheless true. But I have come to the conclusion that while there are big problems in the service itself it is the general public who are contributing enormously to the difficulties faced by ordinary people when they find themselves in need of medical attention. For a start there is a class of people who seem to take up residence in the A&E Department almost every weekend. They have no regard for queuing systems, rules or regulations and generally make a nuisance of themselves causing distress for other patients. It is easy to spot them. They usually have a fleet of vehicles parked outside but never in designated parking areas and they generally bring the entire extended family with them to the hospital. Their vehicles are often parked in such way as to prevent others getting close to the doors of the Emergency Department causing added difficulties for the elderly. Apart from the Emergency Department the other big health

topic which is often splashed across local newspapers relates to the response times for ambulances in the area. I won’t dwell on the rather silly headlines about it taking fifty minutes or an hour for an ambulance to get from the hospital to a casualty just a couple of kilometres away. This of course is nonsense, but is regularly repeated as if to suggest the ambulance personnel are actually pushing their vehicles along to roads. The length of time it takes an ambulance to reach a location depends on where that vehicle is despatched from. Only the very naive would assume that there is fleet of ambulances fully manned waiting at all times at every location for an emergency call. Of course there are real difficulties in relation to the ambulance service and they go much deeper than whether it took five or fifty minutes for a vehicle to reach the scene. The question is why it took the amount of time it did. Certainly if there were more ambulances there wouldn’t be the same delays, but then again if it

rained fifty euro notes once a week we would all be rich too. In the real world neither is going to happen. Part of the reason people are often left waiting longer than they should for ambulances is the fact that the service is abused by the public, not just in a minor way but in a wholesale manner. And I am not just talking about people who call ambulances when their illness didn’t really warrant transportation to the hospital in a specialised vehicle. I am talking too about people who use ambulances as a glorified taxi service. I have no doubt that some will be horrified, even by the suggestion that people abuse the ambulance service, but unfortunately it is a fact and the level of abuse is far greater than

most people would imagine. For example a character in a rural part of Wexford who regularly called an ambulance to his home really had little interest in what the A&E had to offer him. He merely put his head inside the door before heading off down the town to enjoy night in the pub.

Transport by ambulance meant that he didn’t have to fork out the taxi fare. How do you put a stop to this? I simply do not have the answer but it is something which could usefully examined by some study group.

Pity the poor patient who suffered a facial fracture in an industrial accident and ended up in hospital only to have his surgeon punch him in the face in an attempt to correct the break. The consultant involved was, apparently, a leading facial surgeon but he was observed by other patients ‘repeatedly punching’ the patient in the face to try and correct the fracture. As I always say with these items I promise I am not making this up. Not surprisingly the incident led Professor Ninian Peckitt (63) to an appearance before the General Medical Council, but what is surprising is that the Council hearing was told

that the case against the Professor was not centred around the performance or the outcome of his efforts but on the method of the surgery. So it seems the punching worked. The Council hearing was told the surgeon embarked on a ‘close reduction’ procedure where he is alleged to have punched the man to the face to reduce a fracture without considering the option of surgery. Not surprisingly the surgeon denies the allegation and says he ‘digitally manipulated’ the fracture. I suppose you could say one man’s punch is another man’s ‘digital manipulation. In any case there are several witnesses to say it was repeated punching which was

employed as a medical procedure. It does strike me as one way of getting rid of waiting lists. A punch in the chest could be used to deal with heart conditions, a good slap to the stomach would deal with an appendix problem and the maternity unit could be really freed up with a few slaps helping mothers deliver babies in double quick time. However, I am glad that I didn’t meet any Consultant who went in for this type procedure during my various stay in hospital. Meanwhile, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service hearing into the incident is continuing.

A bonus for smokers I thought it was April Fools Day when I heard that a Life Assurance company had announced that they were to give preferential treatment to heavy smokers. It must have been the first time ever that smokers were offered a bonus by anyone. In this case they are effectively being offered higher pensions on retirement because the cost of buying annuities for them will be a bit cheaper than for non smokers. But of course this is an insurance company so you won’t be surprised there is a down side for the

smokers. The actuaries have calculated that the smokers won’t live all that long to claim their pensions so the more of them they can attract to their books the better for

why the difference in service to the public? If it is sufficient for the Revenue Commissioners who are dealing with people who are trying to get back to work by taking up employment or starting their own businesses to close their doors at 1pm why does the Department of Social Protection who are basically in the business of

paying out money, have to stay open all day. It seems to me that either both should be open all day or both restricted to half day opening. I suspect that political correctness is behind the decision not to restrict the welfare office to half day opening, but I could be wrong.

Teacher conferences are good for Wexford Once again it was a good Easter for Wexford with another of the teacher unions using the town for their annual conference. This is the second year in a row that one of the teacher

conferences has been staged in the town and that is very a positive development. The Teacher conferences attract a lot of publicity and staging the TUI conference this year, just twelve months

profits in the long run. Nevertheless I’d say a lot of smokers will be happy to collect a higher pension and carry on puffing to the end.

Why one law for tax, another for welfare? It strikes me as rather strange that the office of the Revenue Commissioners in Wexford closes to the public at 1pm each day while next door the Department of Social Protection remains open to customers throughout the day. Both are government departments and both are staffed by civil servants so

Sunshine, Guns, Chains, Bicycles, Wreaths and Speeches as countdown to 1916 centenary begins An overseas visitor to Ennisocrthy on Easter Monday would have been forgiven for thinking that serious violence had erupted in the town overnight. Beneath brilliant sunshine the Defence Forces assembled outside St. Aidan’s Cathedral. Inside civic leaders attended Mass to remember all those who died in the 1916 Rising, Down the street various groups in different types of uniforms were busy putting things in position for a ‘battle’ which would take place a little later in the morning. It’s one year to go to the hundredth anniversary of the 1916 Rising and as plenty of people will tell you Enniscorthy was one of the few places outside Dublin to actually take part

Square in Enniscorthy has been the scene of commemorative ceremonies for years but they have been on a very small scale with numbers and interest dwindling over the years as the living links with the Rising disappeared. This year it was a completely different story with numbers swelling to several hundred as the countdown to the centenary got underway in earnest. Despite the larger crowd you could still pick out the seasoned attendees at this ceremony. They were the people who stood tall with beaming smile happy in the knowledge that the memory of their relatives lives on and is to be fittingly honoured one hundred years after they fought or Irish freedom.

The official wreath laying ceremony started proceedings in Market Square with Minister of State Paul Kehoe and Barbara Ann Murphy, Chairman of the Enniscorthy Muniicpal District Council laying wreaths at the Monument

in that event and locals are determined to ensure that it is celebrated in style next Easter. It’s probably no harm at all that one of the local TDs. Paul Kehoe, is Minister of State in the Department of Defence. In that position he has a big role in organisation the participation of the Defence Forces in the National Celebrations and he has obviously played his part in ensuring that Enniscorthy is one of only three venues outside the Capital to be part of the official events programme next year. Monday was a sort of small scale dry run for what might happen a year from now. The Market

hill and then back down to Market Square. They were followed by uniformed members of the Defence Forces while the ‘rebels’ and medical core in full period dress also took part. But most prominent of all in the parade were those wearing various Chains of Office. Council Chairmen from across the county, Presidents of Chambers of Commerce and other civic leaders, all with their impressive chains sparkling in the bright sunlight. Indeed if this chain gang had been around one hundred years ago they would have been well equipped to strangle the RIC Officers to death. In Market Square a group of girls in Irish dancing costumes made a quick exit from the scene as soon as the parade came to a halt. These dancers may be used to the heat of

battle on a weekly basis but this was no place for young girls. And it wasn’t a place for dogs or those easily upset by loud noise either as the deafening sound of gunfire soon echoed around the Market Square and throughout the town of Enniscorthy. But before the battle could begin there was the matter of formalities, speeches, wreath-laying, the national anthem and the sounding of the Last Post. Barbara Anne Murphy, the Chairman of the Enniscorthy Municipal District Council was able to draw on her own family history for her speech recalling the part played by late grandfather in the Rising. She had the privilege of discussing these events with him while he was still alive. Minister Paul Kehoe is playing a fairly central part in the commemoration ceremonies nationally but he will be keeping a close eye on things locally in advance of the big commemorations next year and he is determined that The Athenaeum be restored to its former glory before then. Speeches concluded, the Market Square was transformed into a picture postcard scene from the early part of the last century as men in cloth caps cycling High Nellie Bicycles mixed with elegant ladies in period dress taking a leisurely stroll.

Back in 1916 there was very little by way of communication so it took more than two days for the rebels in Wexford to hear about the Rising in Dublin, but once they were put in the picture they lost no

they were being told by Colonel French of Newbay House. Eventually it took a trip to Dublin by one of them and an order from Pearse himself directing them to lay down their arms, for an end to be

time attacking the local RIC barracks. There was only one casualty, an RIC man who suffered a bullet wound to the leg. Hostilities were halted to allow the injured officer to be taken out of the Barracks for transfer to the local hospital. If it were today he would remain on a trolley until long after the Rising had concluded, one onlooker suggested. The Rising in Enniscorthy continued until well after they had surrender in Dublin, mainly because the locals simply didn’t believe what

brought to the hostilities beneath Vinegar Hill. There was a decent crowd in Market Square on Easter Monday to enjoy the spectacle and it was a well re-enacted battle scene. As a taster for the big celebrations next year it certainly served its purpose and everyone associated with the yearlong preparations for the centenary will be hoping that the weather which smiled so gloriously on the centre of Enniscorthy Easter Monday 2015 can be captured again in 2016.

Get Hard Review

Get Hard is the first collaboration between the two of the biggest names in comedy at the momentWill Ferrell and Kevin Hart. Does the film work, as both a comedy and a showcase for the duo’s

talents? Honestly, I have to say that, yes, it does work, in both respects. It may not be the best comedy ever, or even this year, but it’s decent enough and good for a few laughs.

The basic premise is this: James King (Played by Will Ferrell), walking embodiment of every stereotype about out of touch rich people, has his comfortable life disrupted when he is framed for embezzlement. Terrified at the thought of going to prison without knowing how to defend himself, he hires Darnell (Played By Kevin Hart), who makes a living washing peoples cars, to teach him how to survive in Jail. Darnell is a clean cut, law abiding, square who has never broken a rule in his life, but King assumes Darnell knows everything about prison, and has served time there himself, simply because Darnell is black. However, since King is offering him 30,000 dollars to teach him how to handle life in prison, Darnell is more than willing to pretend to be what King thinks he is, and teach him about prison, since he is trying to raise enough money for his family so they can move out of the ghetto. From there on in, you have your typical culture clash comedy-Upper Class Vs Working Class, White Vs Black, etc, etc, and what unfolds is essentiallys a set of ludicrous setpieces, where Darnell tries, in vain, to teach King how to be “Hard” enough for prison. James King is essentially an unsympathetic character, with many vices such as racism, snobbery, selfishness, etc.etc, and yet despite his awfulness, you never really hate him as a person. Everything about King is designed to

be a satire of the negative tendencies of the wealthy, but Will Ferrell’s performance gives him more likability than that of a mere caricature. Having said that, Will Ferrell probably could make Hitler seem likable if he played him, so maybe that doesn’t count for much. But a lot of this may also be due to the fact that Kings bigoted opinions and callous actions seem to come from a place of cluelessness, rather than genuine malice. Of course, as is par for the course in these “Opposites Attract” films, James King gradually learns to be a better human being through his interactions with Darnell, but at least his redemption is somewhat believable. I know that sounds like a spoiler, but believe me, if you have seen any of these kind of films before, you’ll know from the beginning what’s going to happen in this one. I thought there were funny moments and lines in this film, but it definitely depends on your personal sense of humour as to whether or not you will enjoy this. The jokes in this film are very vulgar, and if that type of comedy is unfunny or offensive to you, you will not enjoy it. In general, this film is not for the easily offended, with jokes based on taboo topics like racism, prison rape, gang violence, and so on. Some may also find the film one note or repetitive. But if your sense of humour is on the nastier, cruder, side of things, you will probably like this film.

NWSPCA Report Little Miss and Rodney looking for a home together It was a fantastic week for the North Wexford SPCA with dogs Jacob, Charlie, Snoopy, Kropka, Scruff, Scout, Roxy, Tom and George all finding

new homes. Also cats Cole, Missy and Lucy headed off to live with their new forever humans. Little Miss and Rodger are both being looked after in our cattery at the moment and would love to find a home together. They are approx. 6 years old and have previously been indoor cats. One loves the other, but they are like oil and water. Rodney wants to be on your lap all the time where as Little Miss just

wants to be in your company. Rodney is very gentle and funny. You'll often find him snoozing under his bed - very cozy - or sometimes perched on top of all his bedding. The North Wexford SPCA is always on the lookout for new volunteers to help in the kennels or cattery. We are especially looking for new volunteers who would like to help in the NWSPCA Charity Shop on Rafter Street. Previous shop or retail experience

would be great, but is not a must. Please make contact with us on 0876392531, send an email to nwspca@hotmail.com or join our Facebook page.

Eoin

Adam Ennis

Where to go in Dubland?

Introduction Hi everyone! And we’re back again for another edition. Between the two of us, we’ve been keeping busy but nothing’s new

there. Adam has exams over the next month and Eoin’s still getting the hang of tying his laces. The weather’s been absolutely

unreal over the last 2 weeks, so hopefully it’ll keep getting better through summer! Thanks for reading again. :)

TUNE OF THE WEEK This week we’ve both completely clashed when it comes to crowning ‘Tune of the Week’! Sooo.. We’re going to let you decide. Snapchat, Tweet, or message us on Facebook to let us know who you argee with!

Eoin’s choice: Becky G – Shower I usually despise pop music but this is absolutely lethal!!!! Love playing this and bopping about the house, tis a feel good song, super catchy and to make it better, she’s mint!

Adam’s choice: Lost Frequencies – Are You With Me Honestly don’t think there’s any competition here to be honest. This is an absolute cracker – definitely one of the tunes of the year and my top contender for summer tune 2015. It’s being played across every radio station in the county and with all the weather we’re having, it’s making it feel like summer!

The Notorious Conor McGregor He’s the man everyone has been talking about lately and that is of course Ireland’s very own Conor McGregor. He has seemingly split the country in half, you either love him or hate him, but I for one absolutely love him. He has put Ireland on the map in the MMA circuit and that has to be applauded! Yes, he is outspoken and yes, he’s cocky but it works for him. He isn’t all talk as all his UFC fights have proven. His title bout with Jose Aldo is sure to smash PPV records for the sport across the world. Dana White the UFC president has paraded the two fighters around the world which has created a media frenzy. He has sold this fight to the public perfectly and McGregor’s antics have got everyone excited for this fight. Even

if you’re an Aldo fan you have to admit it’s going to be close and hopefully will live up to all expectations and be one of the best MMA fights to ever happen as it has the potential to be one of those special occasions. It is a pity the whole of Ireland isn’t rooting for McGregor as his behaviour has thrown a few people

Eoin Healy

off him. I personally don’t think he’s doing an awful lot wrong - he’s only playing mind games and its showing that it’s affecting Aldo as he has been on edge lately at his press conferences. My prediction is that it will go the distance and will be a very tactical fight and not a brawl as people expect it to be.

With secondary schools getting ready to wrap things up in the next month, a new crowd of students will inevitably make their way to Dublin to go to college. Even in the next few weeks, 5th and 6th year students will no doubt travel up to visit older friends and head out in the capital before the college year ends. I know from starting out as a ‘fresher’ nearly 2 years ago how little most people will know about the place. I’m forever getting messages and stuff from people wondering where to go and what to do when they’re up here for a few nights, so, I guess this will help that too! (y) So, I’m going to make a list of all the places you’re most likely going to want to go when you do finally start up in the big shmoke. Granted, people will have different tastes, but for the most part, here’s where you’re probably going to end up: Monday Night: Dicey’s and Dandelion pretty much have Monday nights sown up. Which is probably the reason I

haven’t been out on a Monday in about a year and a half. Anyway, both are absolutely rammed week in week out. Basically, if you’re a ‘fresher’, Dandelion’s probably your best bet. Otherwise, Dicey’s seems to be fairly popular. To be fair, Dicey’s have 2 euro pretty much any drink, and Dandelion have some serious offers too, like 2.50 Vodka, Red Bulls, so you can’t go far wrong! They’re both just off Stephen’s Green too. Tuesday Night: If you plan on heading to DCU, your Tuesday nights will more than likely consist of going to the NuBar for “Shite Night”. Other than that, you’re only other option is probably Coppers. Which, unfortunately means you’ll be spending 6 euro on their cheapest drink. Yaay!  Wednesday Night: Wednesdays are relatively big in Dublin and they’re definitely my favourite night of the week to go out! Palace is always a safe bet if you’re looking for a good crowd, cheap drinks and

commercial music. Otherwise you have the holy grail of deep house and techno student rave that is Bruce Willis in The Hangar. It’s definitely not for everyone but I’d definitely recommend people try is at least once. Thursday Night: Thursdays are definitely the busiest student night in Dublin. DTwos is a solid call for everyone! It’s always busy and with a maaahuusive two story beer garden out the back and a chipper upstairs, what’s not to love? Dicey’s (as mentioned earlier) have started doing Thursdays too, but seriously, I’d avoid unless you like 18-year-old drunken females spilling drink on everyone! Again, they’re both just off Stephen’s Green in a place called “Harcourt Street”, which you will most likely end up referring to “Hardcore Street” while thinking you’re hilarious. Friday Night: Well, Friday isn’t really a student night, so I have NO idea!

USELESS FACT OF THE WEEK It's possible to lead a cow upstairs...but not downstairs. My life is complete now that I know this! So if you’re having a house party and you decide to bring a cow upstairs you’re going to have a hard time getting her back down!

LARRY O’GORMAN The man who gets Behind the Sports Headlines

It’s nearly ham sandwich time again Hi folks The national league semi finals are going on at the moment but some people say that when you are not competing in them yourself your focus tends to go towards the championship. So this week I will have a look at the up and coming Munster and Leinster championships as we all know they are the main competitions before all roads lead to Croke Park for the quarter finals and semi finals of the All Ireland and then the big prize, the Liam McCarthy Cup decider.

But first to the teams that are competing for the Munster and Leinster crowns where they will all have to do battle against each other before any talk of even getting to an All Ireland never mind winning it. So as the summer gets closer (and wasn’t the weather great last week) and the build up to the big games are almost upon us, it is time to ask who will win Munster and who will win Leinster? . Well I will give you my predictions, First we will look at Leinster where we

have to consider Kilkenny Dublin - Galway and Wexford. To me these are the only teams that have a chance of winning it. I would have tipped Kilkenny but with all their recent retirements I think they will come up short this year. It would be great to see Wexford win but I also think they will come up short. Galway will be there abouts if they can hit form but my vote goes to Dublin. Under the management of Ger Cunningham they look good for the title and have looked very promising so

far . But they won't have it all their own way. They will still have to work very hard to win it, but I l think they are good enough to beat anyone if they hit form on the day. Now let's look at Munster. The Munster Championship is the most talked about competition in hurling and it has been that way for decades. Yet when it comes to winning AllIrelands they often find it very difficult ( besides Tipperary that is) So who will win the Munster title? Well it's

Players to look out for this year Key players are very important to any team and these are the guys I think will make the difference between success and failure in 2015

going to be really interesting to see who comes out on top here because several teams have a realistic chance of success. Tipperary - Clare Cork - Waterford – Limerick--are all teams capable of winning. Sometimes in Munster the outcome depends on where the final is played and that has been the case for years. But I feel no matter where the final is played this year I would fancy Tipperary to come out winners in the

end..Munster, should be interesting from the start of the championship with Cork and Clare on the up and you would have to say that both have a chance of success but I will still stick with Tipperary. I am not forgetting Waterford or Limerick, of course, but to me they are both young teams that are still not ready to cause any upset this year. But they are sides for the future So for me it’s Dublin and Tipperary

! $& $% $ ! $ & "! " # & '! $ '$! % $% $ & "!% $$ ! "!& & "'$% )

Danny Sutcliffe is in great form at the moment can have a big say for Dubliner

Liam Og McGovern can drive this Wexford team on leading from the front.

Once again Richie Hogan can be their leader.

Joe Canning could have a big say this year and he will have to if Galway are to succeed.

Seamus Callahan is a match winner on his day and I think he will have a big year for Tipp.

Tony Kelly is an all rounder, a very skillful hurler who always gets on the score board.

Patrick Horgan is another match winner and if Cork are to succeed this year he could be the main man.

Austin Gleason is a young and bright hurler and for a young man he shows great leadership qualities

Don’t be foolish Remember folks this is only my prediction. Of course I would love Wexford to win but after last year everyone will be on guard and know what

to expect from us, so we would have to improve on last year if we do who knows what might happen. By the way if you are

going to have a bet make your own choices. After all remember it's your money not mine. Roll on the championship. Can't wait till I start making my sambos again. My favorite ones are ham and mustard. I just love them.

Would you beleive I have a friend called Toddy who always brings mushy peas sandwiches to the games and he manages to eat them without getting the peas all over his face. And he's not too bad at pulling pints either. See you next time.
