Marriage vote causes Wexford FF break-up The campaign on the same sex marriage referendum has resulted in a political break-up in Co. Wexford with Fianna Fail’s longest servicing public representative in the county resigning from the parliamentary party following strong opposition to his stance on the vote. Senator Jim Walsh has represented Fianna Fail at various levels for four decades and is known for his conservative views. Last week he told the Seanad he believed

County to ‘Rise’ again on Monday Co Wexford is set to ‘rise’ again this Easter Monday, just one year short of the centenary of the 1916 Rising, when re-enactment groups from all over Ireland converge on Enniscorthy’s Market Square to re-create a 1916 era battle. Re-enactors dressed in Irish Volunteers and Cumman na mBan uniforms will lead an assault on an RIC Barracks defended by members of the Royal Irish Constabulary. Spectators will

experience the sights and sounds of battle as history comes to life on the streets of Enniscorthy. Enniscorthy was the only town outside Dublin to rise in Easter 1916. For four days the town was controlled by local Irish Volunteers and Cumman na mBan members while the tricolor flew over the Athenaeum. Easter Monday commemorations have been held in Enniscorthy for the past fifty years and next

Monday’s event will pave the way for the major centenary celebrations next year which will be held as part of spectacular ten day programme of events. Monday’s ceremony will begin with a commemorative mass in St. Aidan’s Cathedral at 10am. Following mass a parade led by members of the Irish Defence Forces will march from the Cathedral through the town for ceremony in Market Square.

Each egg hunt costs €4 per child (€3 for under 5s and holders of family garden members). Usual admission charges apply to adults, seniors, students and children not taking part in the Egg Hunt. For families there is an excellent value family ticket for 2 adults and up to 4 children for €24. This gives full access to the museum, gardens and either egg hunt for the children. For those who are family Museum Members there is no charge for the egg hunt.

All children taking part in either egg hunt will receive an Easter egg prize. Families who spot the golden egg will be entered into a prize draw to win a family annual membership ticket to the Museum and Gardens worth €50 or a voucher for €20 to be used in the Peacock Tea Room. On Easter Sunday, the Easter bunny will be in residence and can provide help to children who want it and will be offering chocolate all who meet him. This event is suitable for all the family and promises fun whatever the weather! The museum, shop and tea room are open every day during the holiday period until 5pm with the gardens open until 5.30pm. The Star to Close The Star Bakery has become somewhat of a pillar of Wexford’s South Main Street over the years, however, that will come to an end on Easter Saturday as owner Marie Doyle calls time on what has been an 18 year stint at the helm of a Wexford institution. Having served the people of Wexford since the early seventies, The Star has served up delicious cakes, pastries and pies to generation after generation of Wexford people. Marie Doyle took over the bakery 18 years ago, taking the reigns from the

late Bernie Roche who operated there for 25 years, and in that time there has been massive change in the landscape of South Main Street with businesses coming and going and the loss of an anchor store in Tesco/Crazy Prices. The bakery employs 12 part time and full time staff and Marie has said it has not yet been decided what will happen to the premises, however, it will certainly signify the end of an era when she closes up the doors for the last time on Saturday, April 4.

and a new rural transport service will be established to connect the towns of Clonroche, Bunclody and Tullow to Enniscorthy and New Ross for onward connections to Dublin, Wexford and Waterford. The news was unanimously welcomed in the towns concerned and the next step will be to establish the new rural transport link which is expected to be

News Lidl to relocate for rebuild German supermarket chain Lidl’s Gorey store is to move to the site of the old Tesco premises on the Courtown Road while they rebuild their own store on the Arklow road. Lidl Gorey was given the green light last year to demolish it’s current premises

and build a new state of the art supermarket on the same site. The new building is due to be quite a bit larger than the current one and will also see the addition of a bakery and an off licence. Lidl has made an application for a beer, wine and spirits

licence for ‘a premises at Mill Road, formerly Tesco store’ and they have also applied for a licence for the new store when it is built. The store has refused to comment on any developments in relation to their business in Gorey.

Wexford still being represented in The Voice There were mixed fortunes for Wexford on RTE’s The Voice as two local women took to the stage looking to impress the public and the coaches in the live shows. Helena Bradley Bates, a mother of four from Wellingtonbridge who is currently expecting her fifth child in a few weeks managed to wow the Irish public and power on through to the next round. The clock is now ticking for Helena, however, as the quarter finals of the competition is due to take place on April 12 and if

she makes it through that the semi-final is April 19 with the grand final a week later. Coach Bressie was urged to get his midwifery skills up to date just in case. Helena gave a fantastic performace of ‘I Wanna Know What Love Is’ and judge Una Foden commented ‘Your lung capacity is not affected by the baby!’ Despite another wonderful performance, it was the end of the road for Wexford town’s Sasha Sangari Smith who ‘blew the roof off’ with her

performance of ‘Piece of My Heart’ but ultimately failed to make the next round. Una Foden told Sasha that she had huge potential and Bressie described the performance as ‘amazing’. However, it wasn’t to be for Sasha and with just one Wexfordian left in the competition the whole county will now be behind Helena as she prepares for the next round and hopes that her new baby doesn’t come a little earlier than scheduled.

Spring Style for Him and Her’ Kiss and Makeup becomes Glow Beauty Rooms Gillian Flynn always wanted to be a beauty therapist ‘As a teenager I used to visit my cousin's beauty salon and be amazed by how great you could feel after just one treatment. It was then I decided that was what I wanted to do for a living.. make people feel good about themselves. ‘I attended Enniscorthy Vocational College Beauty Therapy course. It is an excellent course and very wellregarded in Ireland. After the 2 years I qualified in I.T.E.C., C.I.B.T.A.C. and C.I.D.E.S.C.O. While there I received a scholarship to study in Sweden. It was an amazing experience where I learned invaluable Swedish Massage techniques as well as high fashion makeup skills’. ‘On leaving college I entered straight into the workforce, being offered a job in a busy salon. While I enjoyed working there and made good friends, I also knew I needed to pursue my dream of opening my own salon. I opened the doors of Kiss and Makeup Beauty Salon on Duffry Hill, Enniscorthy in October 2013. I developed a loyal clientele of lovely ladies over the year and a half, and formed some great friendships’. I had been toying with the

idea of moving premises to facilitate a new line of body therapies we had been training in, and when the opportunity presented itself I knew it was too good to pass up.. Glow Beauty Rooms will open it's doors on Friday 3rd of April at The Riverside Park Hotel’.

Robbie brings prayer Gorey’s ‘drug kiosk’ back to the Council Sometimes drugs related issues dominate the debate at local Municipal Council meetings, the lack of housing is also fairly high up the agenda most months while the state of the roads is forever a problem, but in Gorey they do things a little different. As a nation we are becoming an increasingly secular society with religion playing a much reduced role in the everyday life of most people but in North Wexford at least there is one man who is determined to roll the clock back. Blessed Robbie Ireton, defender of faith, reciter of prayer and champion of a little bit of religion, had a few stern words for his colleagues

Cllr Anthony Donohoe will act as Curate for Council prayers

at the March meeting of his local Municipal Council. Whatever happened to the prayer at the start of the

meeting, he wondered, while his colleagues reacted with a certain amount of puzzlement. The Town Manager Amanda Byrne reminded the Labour man that there had never been a prayer at the start of District Council meetings, but it was something which had been a tradition at meetings of the Town Council, Robbie observed. The Chairman John Hegarty, while careful to ensure that he would not come across as anti-prayer was rather lukewarm on Robbie’s idea and pointed out that his colleague was incorrect when he stated that all Council meetings had previously started with an opening prayer. But Robbie would not be deterred as he spoke of things going backwards and the importance of prayer while his colleagues looked at each other , possibly searching for Devine inspiration. Whether it was Devine inspiration or not Pip Breen, fresh from a rather successful week in Cheltenham, was prompted to second Robbie’s prayerful proposal. Chairman Hegarty wondered if there were any other views. With heads bowed Joe Sullivan and Fionntan O’Sulleabhain looked as if they had already begun their personal meditation. But Mary Farrell was alert and wondered if there would be a difficulty for people

A public telephone kiosk in the centre of Gorey is serving many purposes but not the one it was intended for, it has emerged. With the prevalence of mobile phones the usage of public telephone kiosks has dwindled to almost nothing in recent years but other uses have been found for the Gorey facility. It is now being used

both as a public toilet and as a dealing centre by drug pushers. That’s according to local councillors who now want telecom to remove the kiosk. Cllr. John Hegarty said no one used the kiosk to make phone calls while Cllr. Robbie Ireton said the dogs in the street had mobile phones now so it served no useful purpose.

Time to hide ‘To Let’ signs Cllr Robbie Ireton takes on Parish Priest role at Council.

holding different beliefs or views, but she was not going to stand in the way Robbie’s prayerful ambition. As far as Chairman Hegarty was concerned it was sorted but then the question arose about who would lead the prayer. Anthony Donohoe wondered if the task would rotate but on this occasion at least the Chairman had no doubt about who would do the honours pointing the finger at the High Priest of Courtown

himself, Robbie. He didn’t say it outright but you got the impression that his view was that if Robbie wanted prayer then he would have to say it himself. And the Courtown councillor duly obliged. Beside him sat Anthony Donohue looking every yard the Curate to Robbie’s Parish Priest. In Robbie’s absence we understand the task of leading the prayers will fall to Curate Donohoe.

‘To Let’ signs, some of which have been on the outside of buildings for up to ten years are giving a very bad impression of the state of business in Enniscorthy. One of the biggest offenders is the sign on the old Dunnes Stores building in Rafter Street. which has been in place for a decade. Now Cllr. Keith Doyle wants the Council to consider a new bye-law

which would prohibit the erection of ‘to let’ signs outside buildings. Instead he wants them placed in the windows inside the premises saying there was no need for them outside because anyone interested in renting commercial property would go to an estate agent and be fully aware of everything that was available in the town.

Paddy wants to see what the Gardai can see CCTV cameras will soon play an increasing role in the battle against crime and anti social behaviour. New cameras are already operation in trouble spots around Enniscorthy and they will shortly start rolling in Gorey. As soon as the Gorey cameras are working properly the local Council will move to have full CCTV coverage for the holiday resort of

Courtown. Cllr Robbie Ireton told a meeting of the Municipal District Council that there

was an urgent need for cameras in Courtown to combat anti social behaviour. Meanwhile in

Enniscorthy, where cameras have been subject to attacks from criminals, local councillor Paddy Kavanagh is anxious to see exactly what the Gardai can view from the images which are relayed into the local station. He has asked to be allowed to sit in the Garda Station himself to view the images. ‘I would like to see exactly what the Gardai can see from these cameras and I don’t believe there should be any problem with that since we as a Council are paying for the cameras’, he told his colleagues.

Enniscorthy Delightful Dollies made a presentation of a cheque the proceeds of their fundraising activities to the Wexford Women's Refuge. Catherine Gorby 3rd from left front row presents Pauline Ennis, Manager Wexford Women's Refuge with the money with members of both groups looking on.

Treating the skin and within....The Wexford Skin Clinic Whether it's help slowing down the ageing process or solutions for a sluggish digestion, Wexford Skin Clinic is the place to go! "At Wexford Skin Clinic, we treat both the skin and within" says owner Belinda Kehoe, a qualified skin therapist, acupuncturist and naturopath. "We combine ancient Eastern treatments and philosophies with the latest in skincare and health research to provide clients with visible and lasting results." Conveniently located on the 1st floor above Westgate Design, North Main Street, Wexford, Wexford Skin Clinic treats AGEING SKIN, ROSACEA, ACNE/SCARRING, DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS, TIREDNESS, ANXIETY and DEPRESSION. Anyone with skin concerns can come to the clinic for a Skin Fitness Assessment. This is a clinical assessment of the skin including a UV skin scan and an introductory skin treatment to

determine the appropriate skincare products , treatment programme and lifestyle advise to suit each clients needs. "Our aim at this point is also to educate our clients on how their skin functions and how they can achieve optimal skin health by nourishing their skin both internally and externally" said Belinda As well as facials and peels, Belinda also treats the skin using Cosmetic Acupuncture and Medical Micro-needling. Cosmetic Acupuncture involves face reading and treating the skin both from an external and internal perspective. For example, under eye bags may be seen as a kidney deficiency in Chinese medicine, therefore we treat both the eyes and the kidneys. Medical micro-needling also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) stimulates the skins' own natural collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and acne scarring and

open pores. Wexford Skin Clinic is currently the only clinic in Co. Wexford treating the skin with Image Skincare. Image is an American cosmeceutical range used in dermatology clinics throughout Ireland. Belinda's holistic approach takes precedence in treating certain skin conditions. For instance, in treating acne, we need to make sure that the liver and digestive system are working optimally in detoxing the body so that inflammation is not occurring in the skin. Belinda says good health and wellbeing is all about simplicity! " In this fast paced world we live in its all about convenience as we are in such a rush to get from A to B. Our ancestors grew their own 'organic food', they cooked it over flames and ate it while they conversed with their loved ones. We buy something that resembles food in a plastic container, we blast it at extreme temperatures for two minutes,

On Thursday night last, the new Wexford Skin Clinic was launched. Proprieter Belinda Kehoe welcomed customers, friends and family to her newly opened treatment rooms which are located on the First Floor over Westgate Design on Wexford’s Main Street. of listening to it, we drink a coffee or a glucose-laden energy drink to push us through, ignoring our bodies needs. Then we get sick and we dose ourselves with chemicals to try to dampen down the symptoms so that we can keep going. Along the way we develop chronic illness like IBS (digestive problems), anxiety and depression, chronic fatigue and stress, arthritis etc. and unfortunately these diseases are now considered part of life in Western culture. We aim to find the reason for these chronic illnesses and treat them naturally with acupuncture, supplementation and lifestyle advise including stress management, nutrition and spiritual practice" says Belinda. As part of finding the root cause of disease, Wexford Skin Clinic works with Fitzwilliam Food Intolerance and Genova Diagnostics Europe to offer a series of diagnostic tests which provide a more complete picture of health of the individual and help identify problems before chronic conditions or disease develop. Belinda, who has been in the industry since 1997 is anxious to do all she can to help people achieve their health and skin goals. She went back to college on 2007 to study acupuncture and naturopathy - using natural medicines and treatments after coming to the realisation that there was no single solution to health and skin and holistic care was the only way forward. Wexford Skin Clinic is open from Tuesday to Saturday, by appointment. If you would like to make an appointment you can contact Belinda on 087-2508772. To find out more about Wexford Skin Clinic, see

GER WALSH When cleaning up encourages more dumping The problem of dumping along our country roads continues to exercise the minds of local councillors and the general public, That is not surprising because as I mentioned here a couple of weeks ago it really has become a problem of epidemic proportions and there is no easy way to tackling it. On the last occasion I praised the various rural initiatives which

have involved locals coming together to pick up rubbish. It is organised in a pretty formal way in North Wexford but is carried out on a much more informal basis elsewhere. Interestingly since that piece appeared I have received feedback from a number of areas where, it seems, the Co. Council may not be playing its part in the cleanup

effort. This seems to have been particularly the case around Tomsollagh near Ferns where the rubbish was cleaned up, placed in bags on the roadside and then nothing happened. Well something did happen. Other people saw the bags of refuse and began placing their own rubbish bags beside them which

was hardly the purpose of the exercise in the first place. Of course over time the rubbish which had been carefully collected from the roadside and placed in the bags was soon flying around the place again, much to the upset of the volunteers who had given their time in the first place to clean up the roadside. Knowing the commitment of Council officials to the clean up this blip surprised me, but it appears not to have been an isolated incident. Enniscorthy Councillor Paddy Kavanagh has also had his ears roasted on the matter and he raised it at the March meeting of the local Municipal District Council. According to Paddy the bags have been left on the roadside so long that they have actually changed colour from the weather. It could be that there is some breakdown in communication, but whatever the problem it needs to be resolved because voluntary effort is vital if this rubbish scourge is to be tackled and defeated and people will not get much encouragement if their efforts come to nothing in the end.

There is plenty for young people to do The problem of drugs in the community is one which occupies quite a lot of time on local radio phone ins, Council meetings and at various other places and often there is the implication that part of the problem has to do with lack of facilities and opportunity for young people. I was struck on St. Patrick’s Day by just how much there is for young people to do in this county and how much opportunity they have to get involved in healthy activity. Those who suggest there is nothing for the youth of today to involve themselves in to help steer them away from drugs and anti-social behaviour are simply out of touch. Just look at the scale and variety of clubs and organisations catering for young people that were on show in the St. Patrick’s

Day parades. It was simply amazing. And you have to take your hat off to the many adults who run these clubs, because without their efforts, organisational skills and time they would simply not function. Of course there are quite a lot of sports clubs around but there are also drama groups, dance clubs, fitness clubs and a range of others. In fact to put it simply, there is something out there to suit everybody and there is no need for any young person in the county to be bored, walking the streets and falling into bad behaviour. Of course getting a child involved in a useful activity and keeping them involved requires quite a bit of effort on the part of the parents and I suspect that is where the whole thing is falling down.

Reports that regular daily services between the UK and Waterford Airport are to resume is good news, not just for Waterford Airport but for the entire South East, including Wexford. Regular air access to the area can play an important role in helping to attract new industry because ease of access to any region is one of the top agenda items when foreign investors examine a location’s suitability for investment. As local representatives bang on about how Wexford has been let down in terms of foreign investment by the IDA (and its successors) and complain particularly about the failure to include the area on tours by potential investors. They may have a point but real progress will only be

made when various infrastructural deficits in the area are addressed. These include access by road, air and rail as well as the provision of a skilled pool of people to take up the jobs. George Lawlor made an interesting point recently when he spoke about the increasing pressure on places in second level schools in Wexford town pointing out that if those who

wanted to take up employment in the area found it impossible to find a school place for their children it would be a block to investment in Wexford. He is spot on and all these things need to be kept constantly under review if the economic recovery which is very evident in Dublin and places like Wicklow and Kildare is to roll down as far as Wexford.

Joe tackles his ex-boss A bit of expert knowledge is always a very useful thing to have as a member of a local authority and it’s not something which officials are too fond of. Using his experienced as a Garda the now retired member of the force Joe Sullivan was able to put some incisive questions to Chief

Superintendent John Roche at the recent meeting of the Joint Policing Committee. In particular he quizzed his former boss on the validity of his suggestion that burglaries were on the decrease by pointing to the big increase in the number of trespass incidents saying that essentially one was only a

very small step from the other. The Gorey man was also tiger like in his questioning of Supt. Roche about the downgrading of Gorey Garda Station something which remains a hot issue in North Wexford.

With friends like this… Ed Milliband is more of a toff than David Cameron and any Labour MP who says he is popular on the doorsteps is telling lies. Ouch. Harsh criticism indeed, but even harsher when you consider it wasn’t made by a Tory, but by a member of Mr Milliband’s own party. The MP for Rochdale, Simon Danczuk, described Mr Milliband as being a vote loser, ‘aloof’, more of a toff than Cameron and said the party was being run by a North London liberal elite who knew nothing about life outside the M25 With friends like that who needs enemies. No Doubt the Tories will be using some of the said MPs comments as part of their own party political broadcasts. They certainly won’t be able to come up with any more damming criticism of the Labour leader from their own

Carlow/Kilkenny TD has not yet been quite as vicious in his comments on his party leader Micheal Martin, but he is getting there.

The Borough Council survives A couple of months ago Tony Larkin, the Co. Council’s Director of Services with responsibility for the Wexford Municipal District got a little irritated with members who were continuing

The golden era of newsagents The death last week of Louis Finnegan reminded me of the golden age of newsagents. Louis and the Finnegan family were synonymous with selling newspapers and magazines in Wexford town from their shop in Selskar. Perched at the corner of Skeffington Street the shop probably shifted as many Sunday newspapers in its hay-day as the total now sold in half the outlets in town. That was a time when UK

ranks, regardless of how hard they try. I suppose you could say Mr Danczuk is the John McGuinness of the British Labour Party, although the

to talk about how things operated under the old Wexford Borough Council telling them bluntly that the days of the Borough Council were gone. It must pain him, therefore,

to pass the sign which is still attached to Old County Hall, the HQ of the Wexford Municipal Borough District Council. The sign simply says ‘Wexford Borough Council’.

Sunday newspapers would be pre-ordered and often not picked up until Monday. Of course supermarkets did not sell newspapers which were confined to the special ‘newsagents’ outlets. Louis, who was also a fine musician, sold up and moved to Piercestown to enjoy his retirement several years ago and was still out and about until shortly before his death at the age of eighty five. But, as I said at the outset,

his passing does remind us of a shop and thriving business which would be unrecognisable as far as younger people are concerned. Apart from Finnegan’s Wexford’s Main Street also had Ray and Dick Whelan’s, John L Doyle’s, Buckland’s and others all dedicated to the sale of newspapers, magazines, cigarettes and religious items. Not a single one of those businesses survives today.

Good news on rural transport I was happy to see that there had been a bit of a uturn over the proposed cuts to transports services to Bunclody and Clonroche and very pleased to see that the suggestion I made in these pages a few weeks ago is in the main being adopted by the National Transport Authority. Services to these parts of Wexford are in part to be

maintained by running rural link services to connect with the main towns and that is certainly to be welcomed. But why stop at Clonroche and Bunclody? Improved transport services from rural areas to the population centres in the county should be a priority for all parts of Wexford.

Now roads that are too good cause problems for councillors

Cornmarket Project a massive success

Sometimes councillors just cannot win. As anger sweeps the county over the state of many rural roads with widespread protests over the potholes and bad surfaces several public representatives have been getting it in the ear from the public because some roads are ‘too good’ Recent resurfacing works in Enniscorthy town have been widely praised by councillors with the very smooth new surface getting the thumbs up from members of the public. There is only one problem, everyone now wants a carpet like surface on their own road just like the one enjoyed by the people of Enniscorthy. One man who has been getting an earful from the public over the issue is Cllr. Keith Doyle. However, despite the problems it has caused him he was warm in his praise for the work carried out on the N11 through Enniscorthy. But Keith and his

The Cornmarket Project which was established to help those struggling with addiction and other social problems has been delivering stunning success rates according to figures revealed by its Co-Ordinator, Paul Delaney. The Project deals mainly with those hit by drug and alcohol addiction and maintains a policy of long term contact with its clients. This has resulted in success rates of up to 82% with most of those who enter the project being put on the pathway to a new life. Unemployment is often at the root of problems faced by those who turn to the Cornmarket Project for support, but social problems and traumatic events also play a part in the difficulties which they face. In 2014 a total of three hundred and seventy people were assisted by The Project. Despite cuts of up to 30% in funding in recent years those behind the Centre have managed to maintain services with Mr Delaney revealing that it was a case of having to do more with less. The bulk of the funding for the Project comes from

colleagues have had a busy time explaining how money could be found for such a top class job on the Enniscorthy streets while pot hole riddled roads in rural areas cannot be touched. The answer is that the NRA funded the work around Enniscorthy while money for the rural roads would have to come from the Co. Council’s own resources and at the moment, and for the foreseeable future they are very low. Another mystery which has been puzzling people in the Blackwater area is why the Council seems to surface dress roads which are perfectly good while ignoring routes nearby which are in a much worse state. Cllr Oliver Walsh has been hearing considerable complaints from constituents about good roads which are

resurfaced while others in greater need are ignored. ‘People cannot understand what is going on’, he told a meeting of the Enniscorthy Municipal District Council. The mystery was solved for the Blackwater councillor by Engineering

Staff who explained that surface dressing is undertaken on roads which have been subject to restoration work a year previously to seal them and ensure that the work is protected to lengthen the ‘life’ of the road.

Transport problems hit young unemployed The lack of adequate public transport is a severe problem facing young unemployed people throughout North Wexford, it has been revealed. The lack of a transport network is a major hurdle facing young people who want to access training courses and further education. That’s the view of Claire Ryan who presented an overview of Wexford Local Develop0ment Services in the Gorey area to local councillors.

Youth unemployment is a big problem in the North Wexford area and it is particularly acute in Courtown/Riverchapel but efforts to ease young people back into the world of work are hampered by the transport problems, she revealed. A lack of further education and training opportunities in the Gorey area meant young people had to travel to take up places on courses but this was often impossible because of the transport problems.

the Department of Justice through the Probation Service and the HSE but Community Employment Schemes also play a major part in the success of the venture. Mr Delaney made a presentation on the project to councillors in Gorey and they applauded his work. Councillors contrasted the funding for the Project with the cost of keeping one person in prison for a year. The average costs associated with keeping a person in prison for twelve months are €85,000. This means that keeping four people in prison would swallow up as much State cash as the entire funding made available for the Cormarket Project. The cost of servicing a client in the Project is about €1,200 per year. Cllr Pip Breen said that when you looked at the figures it was a no brainer in terms of the value which the Project provided. Cllr. John Hegarty said it was a service that was underestimated and there needed to be more public awareness of its success rate.

Political Notebook

Fine Gael plans high wire election strategy The political classes in the county are currently obsessed with the run up to next year’s general election with a particular focus on Fianna Fail and who that party might select for its team. There has been little attention paid to Fine Gael and the strategy they will adopt for the contest. Wexford was one of the few disappointing constituencies for the major government party at the last election. Winning just two of the five seats here was at best a moderate performance on a day when the party was taking three out of five seats in both Carlow/Kilkenny and Wicklow as well as South Dublin and Cavan/Monaghan. The Wallace factor played a big part in that Wexford failure four years ago but last year’s local election result would indicate that little has been done in the meantime to address the problems which the party has in the county. Despite a vastly expanded Co. Council Fine Gael virtually achieved the impossible last year and won less seats on a thirty four seat Council than it had on the outgoing twenty one member Council. Some blame for that was due to the fact that as part of an unpopular government support for the party was down, but that is only half of the story. A much biggerslice of the problem was caused by crazy candidate selection and a clear lack of leadership in

Fine Gael at local level. If the local election results of 2014 were repeated in a general election Fianna Fail would be in the driving seat in the county and Fine Gael would be back in their traditional number two position.. The only area where the FG local election strategy was proven to be correct was in Enniscorthy where three well spread solid candidates each won seats. In New Ross the presence of a number of ex Fianna Fail members running as independents

Michael D’Arcy

complicated matters and it is difficult to make any real accessment of the result in that district. However, in the other two districts Fine Gael managed spectacular own goals. Running five candidates in Gorey was

crazy and opened the way for Fianna Fail to become the largest party in the district, handing a distinct general election advantage to Malcolm Byrne over Senator Michael D’Arcy. The lack of a strategic vision and proper candidate strategy displayed in Gorey was a serious own goal or Fine Gael in that it produced results which will make it much more difficult for Michael D’Arcy to find a way back to the Dail. Equally in the Wexford District, where there were ten seats up for grabs and where Fine Gael had three outgoing councillors out of seven, the party managed another spectacular failure winning just two seats on the new Council. Fine Gael does not now have a single public representative in the Wexford urban area, the largest population base in the county. That does not reflect well on the sitting local TD, Liam Twomey, and it certainly will not enhance his re-election prospects. In terms of candidate selection and strategy the Fine Gael organisation went

into the local elections last year like headless chickens and If that is repeated at the general election the party will certainly only have a single TD from Wexford in the next Dail. Despite an expected big drop in party support and the fact that they could only win two eats in 2011, it seems Fine Gael are intent on running three candidates again on this occasion. That is a very risky strategy because if the trio all poll around the same level of support they could get stuck down the field handing an advantage to Sinn Fein and Independent candidates. Fine Gael was once the envy of other parties in Wexford when it came to vote management and strategy but if the 2014 local election performance is anything to go by the current organisation seems to be a very pale shadow of the very effective machine which at one stage managed to deliver three Dail seats for the party in the county. If the three candidate strategy is persisted with, and it does seem that dropping anyone who was part of the 2011 general election team would be problematic, a very tight transfer between the candidates will be vital if two seats are to be retained and that will involve the type of strategic well thought out countywide campaign which the party has not seemed capable of in Wexford for some time.

A show that will have you laughing It’s pretty hard to describe but if you like nonsense and unfettered fun, this really is a one-man show you must see. “Vitamin” involves fifty-five minutes of inexplicably wonderful comic theatre that will have you laughing out loud - a whole new direction to comedy! Carlo Jacucci, the Italian behind Vitamin, who has studied under (and even teaches for) the master of clowning, Philippe Gaulier will take you through completely unrelated but consistently brilliant sketches like ‘The Saddest Song in the World’ played on the accordion accompanied by various vocal wailings – you

will never see a caterpillar impersonated so accurately and with such charm. Jacucci is a master clown, using nonsense to confuse us and truth to win us over, with no narrative, just his charming style that will leave you laughing uncontrollably at what could only be described as pure physical comedy. Eight years later Gorey lights are switched on Having waited up to eight years residents in Goreys Pearsons Brook estate on the Hollyfort Road have breathed a sigh of relief following the switching on of the lights on the section of the northern inner relief road that runs from the Hollyfort Road into their estate.. Sinn Féin councillor Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin who has been regularly raising the issue over the past year said "it certainly wasn't before time. Some residents have been walking back from town in the dark for the past eight years. So, it is very welcome." He had raised the issue again at the March meeting .of Gorey Municipal Council.

"Residents of Pearsons Brook have been kept in the dark for far too long, and that they shouldn't have to wait until the inner relief road opens, which might not take place until later in the year", he told his colleagues The Sinn Féin councillor added that public lighting is a concern across North Wexford. "Our local cumann did a Community Safety Survey in Riverchapel and some Gorey estates last month and it kept coming up. I would encourage people to report faulty lighting to Airtricitys Public Lights Call Centre on 1850 372 372 with precise location on street, the pole number and their name and contact number "

Poisoning in Dogs and Cats Adpot a pet Poisoning can occur if a poisonous substance is swallowed (solids or liquids), breathed in (gases) or absorbed through the skin (normally liquids). Poisons are substances that damage the cells in the body. In order to cause harm they must enter the body. Accidental poisoning in dogs and cats is usually caused by substances we commonly have in the house or garden shed, eg human medications and pest control products. What are the common poisons in pets? One of the most common causes of accidental poisoning in pets is owners giving human medication to their pet - often for pain relief. Ibuprofen Although ibuprofen can be bought in any chemist as a painkiller for humans it is extremely toxic to dogs (and cats). Just one tablet can cause gastric ulceration, liver damage, kidney failure and death. It is one of the most common causes of poisoning in pets. Paracetamol Dogs and cats cannot break down paracetamol safely and toxins quickly build up to dangerous levels - as little as half a 500mg tablet can kill an adult cat. Slug pellets The most common form of slug pellets contain metaldehyde. Dogs often find slug pellets attractive and will wander around the garden hoovering up pellets from treated areas. The poison causes excitement and seizures followed by depression and collapse. Use organic slug pellets or fence off treated areas. Rat poison

Many rat poisons contain coumarins (warfarin or newer products with similar effects). Dogs often eat the poison directly whilst cats are most likely to be poisoned by eating a rodent already poisoned. Animals remain well for several days after eating the poison until their clotting factors are depleted. Repeated small doses are more toxic than single large doses. Signs include depression, weakness, breathing problems, cough and prolonged bleeding from any minor wound. Poisoned animals can bleed to death without treatment. Food stuffs (Raisins, Grapes, Onions and Chocolate) Pets can be poisoned by human foodstuffs and these poisonings can be fatal. Raisin poisoning causes damage to the kidneys, chocolate poisoning affects the brain and onion poisoning can cause anaemia. In animals which are susceptible to these poisonings even a small amount (a piece of fruit cake, a few squares of dark chocolate) can have serious effects. Garden plants/flowers Lilies are poisonous ( especially to cats) causing kidney failure. Daffodils are poisonous and the danger here would be your dog digging up bulbs and eating them. It happens! Anti-freeze Antifreeze has a sweet taste which is palatable to dogs and, more surprisingly, also to cats. Always keep antifreeze solutions out of the reach of pets. As little as 1 tsp per kg can kill (so a Labrador may only need to

drink 100ml to be poisoned). The severity of the effects depends on the how quickly the poison is absorbed from the stomach and this is slowed by the presence of food in the stomach (in the absence of food the poison rapidly enters the bloodstream). Signs (vomiting, weakness, and thirst) occur within 1 hour of poisoning. Mildly affected animals develop kidney failure (which might be treatable if caught early) whereas more severe cases have seizures or go into a coma. Spot on Flea treatments used on incorrect species Never use a dog flea treatment on your cat. How can I stop my pet being poisoned? Almost all cases of poisoning are accidental so the best way to prevent poisoning is to ensure that all poisons are kept out of reach of your pets (and children): • Dispose of unwanted medicines safely. • Put pest control products in pet-proof containers before putting them out. • Be vigilant when walking your dog to ensure it does not pick up any unusual things. Younger animals are more likely to be affected as often chew strange objects. Cats are less likely to be poisoned than dogs as they are naturally more suspicious of novel substances. Cats may be poisoned by licking off substances spilt on, or applied to, their coat.

pet has been poisoned? • Remove it from the source of the intoxication • Contact your vet for further advice and be prepared to take your pet to the practice. • If your pet has a toxic substance on its skin or coat the worst of the contamination may be washed off to reduce further absorption. Getting urgent veterinary advice The sooner a poisoned animal receives treatment, the higher its chances of recovery. If you think that your pet has been poisoned then contact us immediately. It is always better to phone in advance to warn the surgery that you are on your way. If you are able to take any packaging associated with the possible poison then this may help us to provide the best care for your pet.

What’s On & Where?

Introduction Hi everybody! Hope you all had a good Paddy’s Day. We’ve been keeping busy with work, college and of course, Eoin’s box-

ing night. We’re seriously counting down the days ‘til summer, and we can’t wait..Thanks for reading again!

TUNE OF THE WEEK Omi – Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn remix) I know this was already mentioned in another paper about 4 months ago, but it’s only getting big now, so people will probably be more familiar with it. Never gets old! No doubt you’ve heard it on every radio station over the last month, but it’s still on the rise!

This Sunday, Metropolis Nightclub will host one of the biggest EDM nights to hit Wexford in a long while!! It’s a Bank Holiday too, so you’ve no excuse to miss it. Door open at 10pm. ID required. The line-up really is one that is sure to get a big crowd in: John Gibbons – Award winning radio and EDM DJ Re:Mash – Waterford-based DJ Duo consisting of DJ’s Stephen Power and Evan Marshall Kieran Furlong – Upcoming Wexford DJ with some impressive gigs under

his belt Eoin Healy – DJ Own Heelee will kick things off at 10’O Clock!

Fight Night Ends with a Bang Last Saturday brought you one of the events of the year in Joseph’s community centre. Fight Night has been going on for a few years now and is always a huge success and raises money for all the clubs and charities involved and this year was no exception! I was privileged to have been involved in such a great night. For the past 6 weeks, when training first started, the coaches and everyone else involved with The Joseph’s and the boxing club have been nothing but fantastic. The effort everyone put in to pull this night off was tremendous so a big credit to them. On the night 9 fights were staged with players from Adamstown, The Vols, The

Joseph’s and Wexford Celtic. Huge credit to everyone who stepped into the ring because as I know myself now it isn’t

an easy thing to do. Much respect has to go out to the Adamstown boys who boxed in the lion’ den (Wexford)

and earned a lot of plaudits on the night - it couldn’t have been easy!

to toe with “Arnold Schwarzenegger”, it was brilliant to watch!

All 9 fights were end to end but fight of the night has to go to Wayne Carty and Troy Murphy. If you weren’t at this event you missed out what I can only describe as the brawl of the year. The two boys went hell for leather for all three rounds, giving it their 100% - blood and sweat flying everywhere. They were met with 1,000 standing ovations once the final bell rang, and rightfully so! Fair play to them both for putting on such a spectacle.

Now onto my fight haha!! First of all I would like to say a big well done to Mike Tyson, who I was fighting, for winning the fight. I’d like to thank everyone who was cheering me on I’ve never experienced anything like it in my life From start to finish you were all amazing and I will never forget it. Unfortunately in the first round I gave it my all and went downhill from there, I’m battered and bruised but I raised around a 1,000 euro for Wexford Celtic and that’s what this is all about! I’m already looking forward to next year’s event but I will be sitting at the bar next time and WON’T be in the ring!!!

We witnessed a lot of brave efforts on the night, from David Dunbar putting it up to the “Jolly Green Giant” to Darren Killeen going toe

Hot - Zayn Malik The 22-year-old has dropped out of One Direction. He left their Asia tour earlier in the month and apparently has been seriously stressed out. Malik was photographed holding hands with someone in Thailand despite his engagement to Little Mix’s Perry Williams, which probably didn’t help things. Soon after the pictures went viral, he went on a bit of a Twitter rant denying that anything happened. Later last week a friend confirmed that Zayn would be going solo and has already started working with the ‘La La La’ producer Naughty Boy.

Not – Jeremy Clarkson Not really sure he deserves the ‘Not’ title but I had to put him somewhere, I do love a bit of Jeremy though! The TV star has confirmed that he will not be returning to Top Gear after hitting a producer and getting the sack! Apparently Clarkson hit the BBC worker because he brought him a salad instead of a steak. High maintenance much?!

LARRY O’GORMAN

The six players who hold the key to our championship prospects Well that’s all folks, at least as far as Wexford Hurlers’ league campaign is concerned.. Now we can only look forward to this year’s championship with both the management team and the hurlers and hope, yes hope, that this time around we can win some silverware. Of course it's going to be tough, nobody ever said it was going to be easy. Yes last year was a good year, or even maybe a great year. It depends how you look at it and while some people recognise progress and are content with that others are not really happy in the

absence of winning something and let’s be honest those unfortunate people have had long faces on them for quite a while now. But I think it’s fair to say that we all got a great buzz out of the matches last year and whether travelling away or staying at home the boys did their county proud and so did all the great supporters. If you remember all went well until the Limerick game when our shortcomings were badly exposed., I said then and I still hold the view that we probably just ran out of legs in the end or perhaps just

weren't good enough on the big stage or more likely a combination of both. But that's all behind us now and we can only look forward and hopefully learn from the mistakes of the past.. It won't be just us supporters that will be expecting a big year from our boys.. A lot of other counties will be treating us with respect and rightly so. But the big question is can we go one further than last year and that remains to be seen. I suppose my main concern is whether or not we can get a settled team now at this present

moment and stick with it in the run up to the championship. A lot of people, particularly those who have been following Wexford hurling for years are asking if we have a game plan at all and if we have can we get it right and stick to it, I believe the management team have a plan and will be working on it in the build up to the championship and I am sure they also have Plan B if needed. The difficulty for a lot of people is that their plan has not been very obvious over the past couple of months But even if you have a plan

that is only half the story you also need to have the passion and pride in the jersey you are wearing Passion and pride can often be the difference between victory and defeat in a game.. This year’s championship will be a big test for the boys. We are not sure who we are facing in the first round until the qualifiers are finished. The qualifiers are for the lower grade teams and that's not disrespecting them. We do know whoever comes out to face us in the first round will put it up to us There are no soft games in the

championship proper. The other thing we know is that whoever wins our opening game the prize is a meeting with Kilkenny. in the Leinster Semi Final. Enough said for now about that encounter. So where are our strengths and weaknesses. Who are the men that could be the difference between victory and defeat for us and who are the players who must perform if we are to enjoy a decent championship run and perhaps even win something. Well here are my thoughts on the key players for Wexford this year.

Liam Ryan: You could play him in any line of defence he simply never gives up. A really strong and important member of the team

Mathew O’ Hanlon: On his day he has the ability to stop any forward from scoring but he must remain strong and focused at all times

Lee Chin: He is coming in to great form at the right time and we know he can hurl anywhere but for me centre back looks like his best position.

Paul Morris: Here is one stylish hurler and a good free taker as well. When he gets on to plenty of the ball he can do any team damage.

Conor MacDonald: Here is another potential match winner any day he strikes form. A lot expected of him this year after a great showing a year ago. I'am sure he will deliver.

Liam Og McGovern: He is in great form at the present moment and let’s hope he can bring his form in to this year’s championship. I believe this guy can be our trump card this year.

I know it is a team effort and they'll all give it their best shot for the team but I feel these six boys I picked will be the back bone of the team when the championship kicks off.Now I can't wait for the whole thing to start.

Local championship set to begin. Wexford’s local senior hurling gets under way in the next couple of weeks but first the local football championship kicks off with two rounds of football first and then two rounds of hurling but at the moment both codes are playing away in the league. We are still not one hundred percent sure of times and dates for the fixtures but we will know soon enough

when the fixtures committee meets. Talks are the football takes place last two weeks of April and then there will be a one week break before two rounds of hurling are staged. So the big question is can the Shelmaliers retain their crown or will we see a new name on the cup this year? Well we'll just have to wait and see.

King Henry Rumours have it that that King Henry might be joining the Kilkenny football panel for this year’s championship. Seemingly they have no free takers or footballers at the moment and are desperate

for anyone who could tog out. And it might suit Henry because having just left the hurling set up being part of the football panel would be like going into a retirement home.
