ISSUE Monday NO. 37 March 16, 2015

Streets safer as pub trade drops There has been a dramatic decrease in public order offences on the streets of Co. Wexford over the last three years as people turn their backs on socialising in pubs and nightclubs. The big drop in public order offences and weekend street incidents was revealed this week by Garda Chief Superintendent John Roche who said the fall off in these disturbances had coincided with a change in social patterns which saw less people going to pubs and more people staying at home to socialise. However, while the march away from pubs has brought a welcome cut in street disorder there has been a big jump in the number of incidents involving violence in private houses. The Chief Supt revealed that there was an increase in the

number of times Gardai were called to deal with incidents in private houses and housing estates where people had been

drinking. John Roche made the revelation at the first meeting of the new Joint Policing Committee for the county which met on Monday. And his main message to committee members was that he simply does not have enough manpower to provide an adequate police service for the county. With one Garda for every five hundred and eighty one people in the county Wexford has the third lowest number of Gardai per head of population in the country. In recent years a shortage of patrol cars had been a problem for Chief Supt. Roche: New Garda the force in Co. cars but no one to drive them Wexford with older

vehicles not being replaced. Superintendent in Gorey with However, that problem has now the Chief Superintendent being been solved but the new put under strong pressure at the difficulty is that the Chief Supt. has patrol cars but no one to drive them. But there is some hope on the horizon with the first batch of trainee Gardai in three years due to arrive at Wexford Station in May. Despite the low number of officers in the county there has been a decline in several areas of crime but criminals travelling from Dublin to carry out smash and grab type crimes in the county continues to be a problem. Another huge issue relates to holiday homes and estates which are barely occupied for most of the year. These are a constant target for thieves. Sen. Michael D’Arcy: Put Garda Meanwhile, pressure boss under pressure over Gorey continues to mount for the Station reinstatement of a Garda

meeting from Senator Michael D’Arcy and Cllr. Joe Sullivan. Chief Roche distanced himself from the decision to downgrade Gorey which he said was taken at Assistant Commissioner level. But Senator D’Arcy contended that the decision was taken based on information supplied by local management and he said it was vital to have a Superintendent back in Gorey even if the station was not to be upgraded again to Divisional Headquarters level. He slammed the decision to downgrade the station and amalgamate the Gorey and Enniscorthy District saying that four of the six largest population centres in the county were now in a single Garda district.

News Youths fans left frustrated by inferior pitch After narrowly missing out on a promotion play off last season, Wexford Youth’s new season got off to a disastrous start with an away defeat to League of Ireland new boys Cabinteely FC. Despite the fact that the game itself was a relatively boring 1-0 win for the home team, the major talking point from the game was the state of Cabinteely’s pitch and how on earth the ref had deemed it a playable surface prior to kick off. Cabinteely were somewhat of a controversial choice for entry to The League of Ireland this season and the photos of their playing surface which emerged following the game will have done them no favours in terms of stemming the flow of ill will surrounding their league entry has generated. While the new-boys put in a good performance, John McKeown firing the only goal of the game just before half time, the Youths were left bemoaning the state of the pitch which appeared rather dangerous. Youths substitute Danny Furlong took to Twitter after the game to upload some pictures of the pitch along with the comment: ‘Result aside and congrats to Cabinteely they deserved it, but this is an embarrassment to League of Ireland Football.’ Fans of Wexford Youths were extremely frustrated with the condition of the

pitch and they took to Twitter to voice their displeasure, many drawing a comparison with a Premier Division game last year between Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers following some damage to the penalty spot. Given the state of the pitch, the opening fixture was not a proud one for League of Ireland, nor was it a proud moment for Wexford Youths slipping to defeat.

Wexford gets set for St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick’s Day in Wexford is one of the biggest days of the year, with celebrations and parades taking place throughout Wexford town, New Ross, Enniscorthy, Gorey and even on a the beach in Duncannon.. The Duncannon event will be the country’s only Beach Parade this St. Patrick’ Day. The parade will start outside the Star of the Sea church in Duncannon at 12noon travelling down the Main Street and from there it will go onto the beach and travel down Duncannon beach. The parade will be made up of local scouts, girl guides, and local sporting clubs with prizes on offer for the best walking float and the best business float. Entertainment will be on offer after the parade with a beach party set to take place, family fun events will be on offer with music, games and entertainment. One of the oldest parades in the country will continue its tradition in Wexford town; starting back in 1917 and continued until the outbreak of world war two.

In 1946 the parade was restarted. This year the parade will commence at 11am from the junction at Fisher's Rowe, William's Street and weave it’s way through the town to pass the reviewing stand at the Quay Front adjacent to the Bridge. This year's parade will see many floats and numerous marching bands and will be one of the country’s best parades. In Gorey the St Patrick’s Day Parade is at 3pm, commencing from the Monument on Main Street lead by grand Marshall Margaret Cooper. There will be music at the Market House from 2.00pm along with fringe events including ‘Tug o War’ and ‘Barman’s race’. Entertainment and prize giving will take place on Esmonde Street directly after the Parade The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Enniscorthy will be led by the Army Reserve Colour Party. the marching groups will set off from St. Senan’s Parish Church at 3.00 pm. The floats and vehicles will join the parade on The Promenade. There will be lots of entertainment on

offer in the Market Square at 2.00 pm with music, dance, and children’s entertainment and free face painting. The New Ross town St. Patrick’s Day parade will get underway from 2pm travelling from Irishtown down the town’s quayside to the viewing platform at the Dunbrody visitor centre. Filled with marching bands, floats and entertainers it’s one not to be missed. When to see your local parade: Wexford town 11am from William Street New Ross 2pm from Irishtown Gorey from the Monument at 3pm Enniscorthy from St. Senan’s Church at 3pm Duncannon 12 noon Star of the Sea Church. Other parades will take place in local villages round the county throughout the day.

Roads face collapse as cash is cut Councillors from across the political divide have united in their condemnation of the latest round of cuts to the grant for work on the county’s non national roads and the man in charge of road maintenance has warned that the current funding cut may be the final straw in terms of the Council being able to save some routes from irreparable damage. Details of the funding cuts were provided by Director of Services Eamonn Hore who revealed that the latest cut in cash meant that the resurfacing cycle was now one year in forty four, up from one year in fourteen. The recommended period for resurfacing roads is once every seven years. The cash which is available to the Council means that just one

hundred and twenty three kms of road can be addressed this year out of the county’s several thousand kms of rural road network. If the current funding cuts are not reversed then some routes will deteriorate beyond repair before the cash strapped Council can get to them, Adding to the problems faced by the Council is the axing of the Community Involvement scheme under which local communities paid a portion of the cost to carry out work in their area. This work was carried out on tertiary country roads which otherwise would have had no chance of getting funding. The decision to end the scheme was slammed by Cllr. Kathleen Codd Nolan who said it was a highly effective scheme which

had worked very well, particularly in the Enniscorthy district. Cllr. Fionntan O’Sulleabhain said the roads were now in such a state that it was becoming a road safety matter. Cllr Paddy Kavanagh said the only sensible thing the members could do was demand a face to face meeting with the Minister to bring home to him the seriousness of the problem in the county and he said the Oireachtas members should be part of the deputation. Chief Executive Tom Enright said the provision of roads was one of the most important functions of the local authority and at official level they would continue to lobby for additional funding. He said the continuing cuts were a false economy.

Enniscorthy gets a new Garda boss…… ……..for a short term Enniscorthy’s merry go round experience with its Garda Superintendents is set to continue with the latest appointee not likely to be in the Cathedral town for the long haul. On the very day that Supt. Liam White took up duty in the town his Chief Superintendent was expressing the view at a Joint Policing Meeting that the man would not stay long in the job. John Roche said that given the fact the new superintendent was not from the area it was likely he would leave again on a further promotion or transfer. Local TD John Browne expressed annoyance that in recent years Garda bosses in Enniscorthy often moved on even before people got an opportunity to get to

know them. In the old days they were in place for many years and had a much better understanding of the town and its problems, he told the meeting. Cllr Joe Sullivan said people always wanted to get close to their homes and that was now being facilitated by Garda Management. Years ago Gardai were expected to move their families when they were appointed to a location. Deputy Browne also raised the issue of burglaries and drug pushing in Enniscorthy saying that it appeared that everyone knew who was involved except the Gardai.\But the Chief Supt. pointed out that solid evidence was required to bring prosecutions and that was not available in most cases.

Sewage no bar to Enniscorthy jobs

Smoky coal may be banned all over county Co. Wexford could lead the nation with a complete ban on the use of smoky coal in all parts of the county following a decision by councillors this week. Cllr Malcolm Byrne is spearheading the camping to make Wexford a smoky coal free county and he cited the serious health risks caused by the coal as his motivation for the move. Nationally the government is considering such a ban but the Gorey councillor wants Wexford to move first and introduce a countywide ban by the end of 2015. However, that date is unlikely to be met with a number of councillors at the March meeting of the Co. Council raising concerns about the timeframe. A smoky coal ban is currently in place in the Wexford urban area but there is increasing evidence that it is being ignored by some households who purchase smoky coal outside the ban

area and transport it to their urban homes for burning.. Cllr Byrne believes county wide ban would deal with the is problem However, concerns were raised by come councillors about the additional cost associated with the purchase of

smokeless fuels while Cllr Larry O’Brien said the merchants had already purchased the bulk supplies of smoky coal for next winter. Cllr Willie Fitzharris said coal purchased in the north of Ireland did not attract the levy which is applied in the

Chronicle March 16, 2015

Republic and could be up to €10 per bag cheaper. A number of other members raised concerns about costs but Cllr John Hegarty said the aspiration of the motion was valid and should be supported on that basis.

The lack of increased sewage treatment facilities as part of a main drainage scheme in Enniscorthy should be no bar to companies setting up in the town, Co Council Chief Executive Tom Enright has insisted. Mr Enright told councillors this week that he had discussed the issue with the local Chamber of Commerce and he had made it clear that no company should be deterred from setting up in Enniscorthy as a result of sewage treatment issues. He told the March meeting

of the Council that treatment facilities could be installed on the site of a commercial development and he rejected suggestions that this would add to development costs making Ennisocrthy less attractive for commercial development,. He said the cost involved would be minimal and stressed that a lot of industries treated waste on site before it was released into the main system. Concerns about the issue had been raised by Cllr Keith Doyle at the March meeting of the Co. Council

School shortage could cost jobs An emerging crisis in second level education in Co. Wexford could cost the county jobs, the Mayor of Wexford Cllr George Lawlor has warned. Cllr Lawlor revealed that it was becoming increasingly difficult for people to get places for their children in local second level schools and he instanced a Consultant at

Some of the students pictured at the opening of Creagh College in Gorey last week

Wexford General Hospital who was unable to get a second level school place for one of his children. Mr Lawlor said if this problem continued it would be impossible to get companies to locate in the area because executives arriving in the county to run them would not be able to educate their children locally.

But that’s exactly what Cllr Donohoe achieved on Monday. Cllr Kelly was in full flow in support of his motion calling on the Council to honour the men of 1916 by displaying a framed copy of the Proclamation in the Chamber when suddenly he fell silent and after a brief pause explained that he thought the Gorey man was trying to interrupt him. Vintage Vincent Vincent Browne appears to have gone a bit off the boil in recent times and his TV3 programme often seems to lack that bite which once made it must watch late night TV viewing for so many people. But last week the broadcaster served up a vintage edition and demonstrated why he is head and shoulders above the more plastic type of presenters who dominate our television screens. The programme in question

dealt with the proposed eviction of one time multi millionaire couple, the O’Donnells from their Gorse Hill home in Dalkey. Browne gathered with other journalists at the gate of the dwelling but when he got an opportunity he went inside and strolled around the grounds giving a very good insight into the type of property at stake here. His gushing descriptions of the walled gardens, swimming pools, tennis court and exotic plants would have done justice

to the very best of estate agents’ brochures. But it was in the studio debate afterwards that Browne really came into his own. The Irish Land League guy, Jerry Beades, became so frustrated with Vincent that he resorted to describing the plush mansion as a ‘bog standard’ dwelling and when he continued to interrupt other panellists Vincent repeatedly told him to ‘shut up’ Not the type of thing which you would be trained to do in any journalism school but

GAA players and ‘plastic wives’

wicked television none the less. There is a sameness and blandness about most television broadcasts nowadays that quite frankly makes much of what is aired quite boring but one thing for sure Vincent will never be bland. Over the top, yes, but never bland and it is the fact that he is so unusual for a TV presenter in either Ireland or the UK that so often makes his show a talking point. But what I liked most of all was the finale to last week’s programme when to the words and music of the Dublin City Ramblers’ ‘Dublin in the Rare Ould Times the show ended with images of the Dalkey mansion. Magic!

Top marks for Walking Group I have been meaning to mention for a few weeks the great work the people behind the Wexford Walking Trails have been doing over the winter months to get walking paths ready all over the county. It is particularly relevant now with the longer evenings just a few weeks away and a return to warmer weather also just around the corner. These people have all been working away on a voluntary basis and over the last few weeks

have presented their plans to the various Municipal District Councils. They were seeking financial support from the Councils to put the finishing touches to the pathways to ensure that they meet the standards required to be recognised nationally. To be fair to the councillors they gave their full backing to the group and the local authority will now provide the materials and financial support necessary (not very much) to get the paths across

the line. Walking tourism is a big growth area and one which this county is ideally suited to cater for so the work of this group could pay huge dividend into the future. They have constructed pathways along the coasts and in historic inland locations giving walkers a great variety from which to choose. The impressive thing about these people was that they went out and did the work themselves

Chronicle March 16, 2015

and only sought local authority support when they had much of the job completed . They didn’t put out the begging bowl first and they didn’t sit around moaning about the lack of paths, they just got up and decided to do something about it. They are an example to people everywhere of what can be achieved when a group of people are prepared to take the initiative. I salute their achievements and work.

Sometimes I wonder about the level of thought and planning which goes into the placing of advertisements on television. Last weekend, for instance, there was a programme on one of the Sky channels called ‘Plastic Wives’. It was, as the name suggests, about all sorts of plastic surgery in the US. But what pops up in the advert break only an advertisement for the AIB GAA

Club Championships with a guy roaring his head off in the dressing room to motivate his team mates to go the extra mile and win a place in the final at Croke Park. To be honest I couldn’t think of anything further apart than these GAA players and the idea of plastic wives. Worlds apart wouldn’t even come near describing the different places both inhabit.

Time to say ‘goodbye’ to Ballykissangle courtroom Wexford’s controversial new courthouse now looks set to get underway before the end of the year. It will be built on the site of the old Municipal Buildings at Belvedere Road, a location which many local residents say is unsuitable. Nevertheless that’s where is it is going now, regardless of local opposition. And leaving behind any arguments over the location of the new facility I have to say it is certainly badly needed. I spent many years covering court proceedings in the existing courtroom at Old County Hall in the 1980s, but hadn’t been back to the venue for many years until fairly recently and I really was shocked at the state of the facilities. To say it was like stepping back in time is no exaggeration.

Barely anything has changed since the 1980s. There is a microphone and recording equipment in place now but the rest remains the same and the room would be more suited to being used as a set in an historical drama than being the venue for present day court sittings. I know there are those who argue that at a time of scarce resources the provision of new court facilities should not be at the top of the agenda but the present facilities really are like something from Ballykissangle. And of course when work does eventually get underway on the new building it will provide a good deal of employment for construction workers and that is another plus or the local economy.

Health Minister to be told of concerns over ambulance service Ambulance crews in Co. Wexford are working from facilities which the HSE would condemn if they were operated by employers in private industry it was claimed this week as members of Wexford Co. Council called for a major upgrade of the local ambulance service. Councillors backed a call for the provision of twenty four hour ambulance cover for all four ambulance stations in the county on a seven day per week basis. Members were presented with a detailed outline of problems facing the service in Wexford at a meeting last month organised by paramedics and at that

meeting they pledged to make the upgrading of the service a top priority. But apart from the need to improve the quality of the ambulance service, public representatives are also seeking improvements to the facilities in which ambulance crews are stationed. Cllr Fergie Kehoe said it was unbelievable that the HSE, the body responsible for inspecting pubs and restaurants would provide such inadequate facilities for their own staff. They would close down private concerns in similar circumstances, he claimed. Cllr Ger Carthy, himself a paramedic, who was involved in organising the meeting for public representatives, said full twenty four hour cover for

The Council is moving at breakneck speed to deal with potential problems with water quality which could have resulted in the popular beach being closed to bathers. Plans have now been put in place to provide a

all the towns was required and he said round the clock cover from Thursday to Saturdays was not sufficient. On the night of the meeting d Enniscorthy would be without night time ambulance cover while the following night there would be no ambulance based in New Ross, he told councillors. Cllr Fionntan O’Sulleabhain said there was huge public concern about the issue and up to four thousand people had signed a petition on the lack of ambulance cover in Gorey.

Cllr George Lawlor said the community alliance who had been heavily involved in the battle or the upgrade of the A&E at Wexford Hospital should be invited to become involved in the fight for an upgrade to the ambulance service. Council Chairman Malcolm Byrne said the Council now regarded this issue as one of its top priorities. The members are now seeking a meeting with the Minister for Health to press the case for full twenty our hour ambulance cover throughout the county.

Fianna Fail presided over floods and traffic chaos in county, claims Lawlor The general election may be twelve months away but the first shots in what is likely to be a yearlong campaign were fired at the Council Chamber in Wexford on Monday when there were sharp exchanges over the unemployment situation in the county. Fianna Fail councillor Michael Sheehan, who is likely to be seeking an election nomination from his party, presented a detailed motion to the meeting seeking the Council’s support for a range of issues to deal with what he described as ‘the chronic levels of unemploiyment in the county’ Cllr Sheehan made a lengthy contribution

proposing his motion which drew the ire of Fine Gael councillor Paddy Kavanagh but also led to comment from his party colleague Council Chairman Malcolm Byrne who is also set to seek an election nomination. But it was references to the inability to build an advance factory in the county and the lack of tours by potential which brought a robust response from George Lawlor. He lashed out at the Fianna Fail man and dismissed the motion saying that when his party (Fianna Fail) were in power industrialists would not be brought to the county for fear they would get stuck in traffic tail backs on the way into New Ross, or get

Duncannon to remain a ‘jewel’ temporary treatment facility at the resort with the work to be carried in May to ensure that everything is in place for the start of the peak tourist season. Details of the plans were unveiled to councillors at the March meeting of the Co. Council on Monday and welcoming the news councillor Larry O’Brien said the development was the result of several years of effort on the part of members and officials.

Bus cuts hit poorest parts of county Bus Eireann’s decision to axe the bus route which serves West Wicklow, Bunclody, Enniscorthy, Clonroche and New Ross will affect some of the poorest and most disadvantaged parst of Co. Wexford, it has been claimed. Members of Wexford Co. Council attacked the decision at their meeting on Monday and caledl for the route to be retained. Bunclody councillor, Barbara Ann Murphy, said Bus Eireann had done nothing to promote the route over the years but it was very important for students travelling to

Waterford and Dublin and was also used extensively by people travelling to various hospitals in Dublin. Cllr Murphy said the withdrawal would affect some of the poorest parts of the county and it could not be allowed to happen. She was supported by Cllr. Kathleen Codd Nolan who said contact should be made immediately with Bus Eireann, the National Transport Authority and the Minister for transport demanding that all existing bus services on the route be maintained.

A promised new system which would involve the logging of all calls to Wexford Co. Council from members of the public to ensure a timely response to queries has not yet been put in place,. Cllr. Ger Carthy was told by Council Chief Executive Tom Enright at the March meeting of the Council on Monday. But Mr Enright said he

expects the plan to be rolled out later this year with the newly appointed Communication Officer, David Minogue working on the proposal. Mr Enright promised to put the new system in place last year following complaints from councillors about difficulties getting through to various Council departments.

Enterprise office helps create 954 jobs According to the 2015 Employment Survey a total of 954 “full time equivalent” jobs have been created to date in companies supported by the Wexford Local Enterprise Office (LEO) of Wexford County Council. 138 of these jobs have been created in the past 12 months alone, during which period the Local Enterprise Office supported 25 businesses with grants totalling €375,221. “The latest figures clearly demonstrate that the supports offered by the local enterprise office network assist in the creation of new jobs. There are many ways we can support businesses of all sizes and

industries,” says Tom Banville, Head of Enterprise at Wexford Local Enterprise Office (LEO).

Increase in jobs Just over 100 full-time positions have been created by Wexford Local Enterprise Office clients companies in Wexford in the past year, according to the most recent employment survey of businesses supported by the enterprise office in Wexford. The largest increase has been in part-time roles – with a

47% increase in part-time jobs created between 2014 and 2015. “We would urge established businesses and people who simply

have a business idea or want to run a business to get in touch to see how we can help. From mentoring to specialist grants for online trading, export grants and trade show grants, the Wexford Local Enterprise Office can help put Wexford entrepreneurs in the right direction,” he added. Training Services

Wexford LEO hosted 83 training events in 2014. These training courses and workshops, networking events and other programmes are designed to assist with the development and establishment of enterprises in County Wexford. These events were attended by 1,100 entrepreneurs, small business owners and their staff. Waterford-London flights to resume Flights on the WaterfordLondon Luton route are set to resume at the end of next month, with Belgian-based VLM Airlines to fly 12 times a week in each direction. VLM will operate twice -daily Monday-Friday flights, as well as a Saturday and a Sunday service. Operations will begin on Monday, April 27 using a Fokker 50 aircraft with capacity for up to 50 passengers. VLM will also operate a four times a week service from Waterford to Birmingham. VLM Airlines has flown in Europe since 1993 with its first service on the Antwerp-London City route. Previously named Regional Airline of the Year, VLM Airlines currently operates a range of passenger services at Antwerp, Rotterdam and Liege to Avignon, Bologna, Geneva,

Hamburg, Nice and Venice. The airline’s CEO, Arthur White, said that VLM very much looks forward to taking on the Waterford routes. “We’re very confident that there is a sustainable demand for reliable and convenient direct air services between the southeast of Ireland and London and Birmingham. Various Waterford-London services have operated since 1985, and we are excited to now be in a position to operate it as well as the Waterford-Birmingham route. “Direct air services into the UK are obviously very important to Waterford and the southeast region from a social and economic perspective. We will be working hard to promote the route for outbound and inbound passengers to Waterford and believe passengers will respond

positively.” Desmond O’Flynn, CEO, Waterford Airport said: “We are delighted to have VLM Airlines coming on board to operate the Waterford-London Luton route, and that they will also continue the very successful Birmingham service. “With a great track record of operating charter flights and providing air services to other airlines, VLM is now growing its own scheduled route network. We are particularly pleased that Waterford-London Luton and Waterford–Birmingham are included in this development. The load factors on our UK services have always been healthy and there’s every reason for optimism that VLM’s Waterford-London Luton service will be a great success for the airline and for the airport. We have always enjoyed

tremendous support from business and leisure passengers in our catchment area and we look forward to that continuing when the new London service commences in late April.” “Air connectivity is hugely important to Waterford and the surrounding southeast region. This has been underlined time and again by inward investment and economic development agencies. Similarly, both services will be a key driver for incoming tourists from the UK, especially at a time when the Eurozone is particularly attractive to UK travellers. For those from the southeast taking a city break, the great world city of London is once again readily accessible. The arrival of VLM Airlines is very significant to Waterford Airport but also to the wider community that we serve.”

They’re off on St. Patrick’s Day at Wexford races Horse racing returns to Wexford on St. Patrick’s Day with the first meeting of 2015. The traditional St. Patrick’s Day meeting is always one of the best attended of the season drawing local and visitors to a fixture which enjoys a great atmosphere.

For many it will be an opportunity to reflect on Cheltenham and use their winnings of Cheltenham week to tackle the bookies again or an opportunity to recoup losses incurred at the big festival meeting. There is an exciting national hunt card on the day

with the €25,000 Artic Tack Stud Veterans Chase the feature on the card. There is a very good supporting programme as well with the €16,500 Micheal O’Murchadha Rated Hurdle and the €16,000 Christy Lynch of the Order of Malta Novice Chase. The latter race is named in honour of a Wexford town man who was a tireless worker for the order of Malta and who worked as part of the ambulance crew at Wexford Racecourse for many years. He died suddenly late last year. In all there are fourl hurdle races, two chases and a bumper on the card. But it’s not just the racing which will attract people to the meeting there is also children’s entertainment and as usual Phelim Byrne’s Seasuir will be available in The Ivy Room with a top class menu. The St. Patrick’s Day fixture is the first of twelve meetings scheduled for the Wexford course in 2015. with at least one meeting every month (except September) all the way through until November. The meeting on Tuesday April 21st will be a very special occasion at the course

because it will involve a trial running of all races in an anticlockwise direction, the first time this has ever happened at the course where changing the direction of the races has been under consideration for some time.

Byrne promotes Wexford in Mexico Co. Council Chairman Malcolm Byrne recently returned from Mexico where he was accompanied t by Enniscorthy District Manager, Padraig O'Gorman, on an official visit. The invitation came from a number of Mexican organisations who contributed significantly to the cost of the visit which was primarily to mark the 400th birth of the Mexican statesman, William Lamport. Lamport was born in Wexford around 1615 and after a period in Spain, ended up in Mexico. While it is speculated that he was the inspiration for Zorro, his work on human rights and the fact that he wrote the first Mexican Declaration of Independence is perhaps of greater note. "Lamport was speaking about equality and freedom of expression and of religion over a century and a half before the French Revolution and the events of 1798 in Ireland. He was well ahead of his time." His views caused him to be called before the Spanish Inquisition where he was convicted of heresy. A statue of Lampert occupies a prominent position at the Angel of Independence in the heart of Mexico City. "He is

like a Wolfe Tone or Fr. Murphy figure in Mexico." Rice sends good wishes Hospital’s Remembrance Service to Opera Society Wexford General Hospital’s Paediatric Unit (St Gabriel’s Ward) is holding its first Service of Remembrance for families who have experienced the death of an infant or child. This service will take place on Saturday, 21st March 2015 at 3pm in Church of the Annunication, Clonard, Wexford. All parents/families and children are warmly invited to attend this special service along with staff of Wexford General Hospital who have cared for children/infants who have died. Ms. Hilda Stafford, Clinical Nurse Manager, St Gabriel’s Ward, at Wexford General Hospital says “The death of a child is a devastating experience for parents and family members. This new Service of Remembrance provides an opportunity for the hospital community to come together with parents and families to remember their child, to offer support and to comfort one another at what we hope will be a very gentle and reflective

ceremony. During the service of readings and music there will be an opportunity for families to light a candle in memory of their child. We will be creating a Memorial Book for babies and children who have died. At the end of the Service we will give each family a stamped addressed envelope with a card inside, asking them to place their baby/child’s name, date of birth and date of death and return this to the hospital. From these cards we will create a Memorial Book that will be kept in the Oratory of the Hospital.” Ms. Stafford also says: “We hope that this Remembrance Service will become an annual service for bereaved parents and families and will allow them to spend some reflective time with other families who share the same journey”. Following the service parents are invited to join hospital staff and other parents for light refreshments in the adjoining parish centre.

Tim Rice, who wrote the lyrics for CHESS The Musical which WLOS is presenting in National Opera House from April 27th next for six nights has written to the Wexford society praising them for taking on the show

and wishing the members well with their efforts. The personal note from Mr Rice was really appreciated by the cast and all associated with the show and has given them real boost as they continue rehearsals.

Johnstown hosts first parkrun A total of 180 people turned up for the first running of the Johnstown parkrun. The field were sent on their way by Mayor George Lawlor following a welcome speech from chairman of the Irish agricultural museum, Peter Miller. Also making a speech was Dr. Cate Hartigan, Head of Health Promotion and Improvement, Health and Wellbeing Division of the HSE, a Wexford native and avid parkrunner. Nationally parkrun is part funded by her department and it gave her great pleasure to see a parkrun in Wexford. Mary T Kehoe from Wexford sport active, who also part funded the setting up of Johnstown parkrun, was in attendance as was Nuala Harpur from the local office of the wellbeing department of the HSE. Before the run started the runners were briefed by race director for the day, John Dier. With most of the runners taking part in their first ever parkrun, 162 of them, and the other end of the parkrun spectrum, Cathy Fraser taking part in her 192nd event, there was a great mixture of experience and novices in the field. The parkrunners made their way around the three lap course taking in gravel paths around castle lake and tarmac road around the tree lined course. Our first person home was Enda Cloake of Menaspians AC in 17'54". Mary Doyle of Sliabh Buidhe Rovers took the honours as being the first

woman home in a Johnstown parkrun, in a time of 21'10". Odhran O'Sullivan was the quickest in the junior section in 25'10" in 11-14 age group, with birthday boy Eoin Roche, ten years old on the day, having the fastest time in the 10 year old section in 28'34" beating his friend and near neighbour Paul Dier by 34". Muireann Hynes was the leading junior girl home in the 10 year old section in 30'50". Stars of the future in the making one wonders for these age group leaders. We were also glad to welcome our colleague and event director in waiting from New Ross parkrun, Catherine Ronan. Your help was very welcome on the day and we wish your team well when your event kicks off next month. With everyone agreed that it is a fast course, even with it being part gravel, the times will be bettered by all as the warm weather comes in the summer. Roll on the next event. Anyone interested in taking part in the parkrun in the future or joining the volunteer rota can find out more details on www.parkrun.ie or by sending an email to johnstownoffice@parkrun .com. Wexford Mayor George Lawlor, who started the run said Johnstown Castle was a fantastic location to hold the inaugural Wexford Parkrun; and he said he was happy to support physical activity so critical to our health and wellbeing in such a unique environment.

What’s On & Where?

Introduction Hi everyone! Finally Eoin’s back from “drinking againnn” over in Liverpool. Seeing as you heard from me last week, I’ll pass you

all on to Eoin for most of this week’s piece. Thanks for reading again! Remember to add us both on Snapchat @adam_ennis

and ilovecider. We haven’t had a good Snap of the Week in a few weeks, so keep them coming. :)

TUNE OF THE WEEK Mark McCabe – Maniac 2000 15 years ago last week this tune was produced. It’s a song that single handedly changed Irish teenage disco’s forever. Still to this day this is my #1 requested song. Every single party whether it’s an 18th or a wedding I will be requested to play it. It’s a song that will never get old and a song that I think most people know every single word of and sits number 1 in the charts for this week which is amazing. Maniac 2000 you’re the song of the week <3

Fight Night 2015 Before I start this article, I apologise for not writing last week as I was over in Liverpool watching the best club in the world beat Man City 2-1, therefore Adam will have a week’s break this issue so I’m afraid you have to put up with me (Eoin). Anyway let’s get started. The Annual Club Boxing Fight Night is back this year to raise money for St Joseph’s GAA, Wexford Celtic AFC, Volunteers GAA and Adamstown GAA. Unfortunately I’ll be one of the boxers representing Wexford Celtic this year so for those of you - and I would guess there’s a lot of you who would love to see me getting the head boxed off me - well then this event is perfect for you. It will be held in St Jospeh’s

Heroes of Hard Dance – Metropolis Nightclub Wexford 16th March The night before Paddy’s Day will see an absolutely massive night kick off down in Metropolis Nightclub. Get Busy Promotions & Metropolis Wexford proudly present Heroes of Hard Dance on Paddy’s Eve featuring a star studded Line Up featuring: World renowned queen of Hard House and Hard Dance: Lisa Pin Up Ireland’s top Hard Dance DJ & Producer: Mark Kavanagh One of Ireland’s finest producers: James Devlin Wexford’s very own and massive Irish talent: Jay Hatchel

Hot – Jordan Henderson Community Centre and the date is 28th of March, Tickets are priced €15 and will be available next week from any boxer or Club Committee member. The tournament is open to 24 ‘Athletes’, both male and female whether they have had boxing experience or not. Boxing coaches Donal Walsh, Michael Nolan, Dominic Fortune and Marty Healy will train everyone

and hopefully turn them into boxers. Participants will undergo an intense programme with the coaches to make sure they are match fit and have the necessary skills to execute a good contest. The tournament will have 12 matches all 3 rounds long. Not only is it a massive fundraiser but also a great night out with the last few years being rammed out the doors!

Quick Survey for 12-18 Year Olds I came across this during the week and just felt it was something really worth sharing with you all. The campaign is brought to you by R&SASS and TUSLA Ireland and has received massive funding on a national level. I know from talking to a lot of you, that a massive amount of 12 to 18 year olds read our

Eoin Healy

section each week. If you’re not in this age bracket, but know someone who is, you can pass this along. Below is a link to a vitally important survey that takes no more than a few minutes to fill out. It deals with the attitudes of young people towards their sexual health as well

as their attitudes and behaviour. It gives teenagers a voice on something that’s usually not talked about. It’s completely confidential, so you can fill it out with peace-ofmind! When you have a few minutes, go and fill it out on: bit.ly/WXYouth

Jordan Henderson once again proved against Man City & Burnley that he is one of the best midfielders in the world after proving doubters wrong over and over with brilliant displays. The Liverpool Vice Captain and Future ballon d'or winner has left fans in awe this season with his impressive displays, even one Man Utd fan ‘Mark Ryan’ Commented ‘He is Better Than Scholes ever was’.

Not - Chris Brown Woman Beater and average singer Chris Brown made the news this week as he wants to reduce his child support payments to his former girlfriend to keep his 9 month old baby fit and healthy. Supposedly she leaked a story about him which was between himself and his ex and now he doesn’t want to give money towards his own child’s wellbeing. I’ve said it before; he’s scum… He’s an absolute embarrassment to all of his fans – what a horrible individual.

News Speed Van claims dismissed A Co. Councillor’s suggestion that speed cameras on many Wexford roads were little more than money collection devices has been clapped down by Chief Supt. John Roche. Cllr. Fergie Kehoe told a meeting of the Joint Policing Committee that the speed vans

were placed at locations where they could maximise the amount collected from motorists rather than having a road safety remit. But his suggestion was dismissed by the Chief Superintendent who said that strict guidelines governed the locations from which speed

vans operated and all had been the scenes of serious accidents in the past. Cllr. Ger Carthy said he could not support any comments which tended to undermine the vital road safety work involved in reducing speeding on roads.

LARRY O’GORMAN

The day we handed a gift to Limerick Well Brother it’s good to be back after the winter break. You know the evenings will soon be getting a bit longer and the weather a bit warmer when people start talking about hurling again and that has been the case for the past few weeks as another hurling year gets underway. As always we start the year full of hope and optimism even if we are used to having all that hope kicked out of us mid way through the summer over the years. But it’s strange isn’t it the way you forget all the disappointments over the winter and are ready to go again with great passion at the start of the new season. Well on way to Wexford Park last Sunday I was full of that hope and optimism. It was a lovely sunny day and I was thinking if we could win today it would put us in a great position to top the group because we must be fancied to win our last two games. That would have put us in great shape coming up to the championship,.

After a good start by Wexford things were looking very promising. They really looked as if they were very much up for the game running at Limerick and putting them under pressure At this stage things were really looking good and there was a feeling among the large crowd that this would be Wexford’s day and you could really sense the confidence. Even at this of the game things were looking good.. It was even enough during the opening exchanges but then Wexford came alive with Liam Og McGovern scoring a cracker of a goal which was well worth the entrance money alone.. You could see that the team got a great lift from that because they were very fired up after the score Wexford were really looking good at this stage but then Limerick hit back with a goal from John Fitzgibbon and a well taken goal it was too, but there was great reply by Wexford with Liam Og flicking the ball to Guiney and this time Guiney

rattled the net. Wexford were now driving on and with Liam Og, Guiney, Ian Byrne and Paul Morris all adding points Wexford were suddenly 8 points in front with 25 minutes gone. Happy Days I said to myself. Limerick did fight back through Hannon and Fitzgibbon points and then Shane Dowling got what can only be described as a soft goal from a (65) and all of a sudden the Wexford advantage was down to just three points at the break.. At the end of the interval the Limerick lads were in the same position as the spectators, waiting, waiting for the game to restart as Wexford took their time coming back on to the field. While Wexford were still in the dressing room you could see that Limerick were ready to throw everything at Wexford. .And that they did right from the throw-in as they ran and ran at Wexford putting them on the back foot and it did pay off as they picked off some lovely well taken points

Then there was another well taken goal by Hannon.and all of a sudden Wexford were very defensive and began to lose their shape. It was worrying at this stage and I wasn't the only one scratching my head. Wexford then John Fitzgibbon breaks away from Liam Ryan brought in fresh legs with it was good or bad. Guiney stuck it well between Paudge Doran and Conor But I did feel if we got the posts. We were one up and Macdonald introduced just to another score or two at this the game was almost over. It liven up the game in around stage we would have gone on looked as if it had to go the forward line where we to win but we didn't and I Wexford’s way, but somehow were struggling at this beleive we lost the game there it wasn't to be. Limerick’s sub stage. The game was close and then, because Limerick Sean O Brien and Shane enough even though Limerick Dowling stuck over a point weren't finished and they did look to be in control and each leaving them one point in threw everything at us and then Wexford came alive front at the final whistle. One after three or four efforts at again and points from Doran, that got away, Yes. We are goal they finally got through O’Keeffe and David Redmond improving but we still have a for a David Breen score. With put our lads 3 points clear. You the teams level and only lot of work l to do. It was could feel the tension in the really a case of us gifting the minutes to go Wexford did crowd between both sets of game to Limerick battle on and supporters and I wasn't sure if were awarded a free in.
