Council pays €400,000 Property Tax bills for tenants As thousands of hard pressed home owners all over the county struggle to find the money to pay their Property Tax bills in the aftermath of Christmas hundreds of others will have their charges paid for them by the Co., Council. It has emerged that the Council will pay more than €400,000 in Local Property Tax charges on behalf of their tenants

across the county. The revelation comes following the failure of efforts by Sinn Fein and some independent councillors to have the Council adopt a policy which could have seen the local authority also picking up the bill for some of their tenants water charges. Social housing is exempt from the Property Tax in so far as the

tenants are not liable to pay but the Co. Council must pay on their behalf. However, in the case of water charges the tenants are liable to pay. However, in the event of a tenant defaulting and subsequently leaving the property the charge could fall back on the property owner, the Co. Council. A Sinn Fein motion sought to get the Council to adopt a policy of not handing over any personal information such as PPS numbers to assist Irish Water in identifying tenants.

It was moved by Sinn Fein councillor Johnny Mythen and it had strong support from several of his colleagues. But there was concern that if their Council adopted this policy the authority itself could be left to pick up the tab for tenants who did not pay their water bills. And County Chief Executive Tom Enright told members that regardless of any motion passed the Council would have to abide by national policy.

GAA fans face tighter controls

Alannah Simmonson, a singer and guitarist from Enniscorthy, was one of several hundred people who turned up for the auditions for Wexford Has Talent. See page 15.

GAA fans attending club games at Wexford Park face a new parking crackdown when the 2015 season begins. Traffic and parking regulations have been in place for major games at the venue for some time but they have not been enforced for less well attended matches. The result has been chaotic parking and problems for residents when these games take place. The Mayor of Wexford, George Lawlor , told a meeting of the Traffic

Management Committee that the problems had been resolved for the big games but it was a different story for smaller clubs games with only three or four hundred people attending. Now a meeting of all interested parties including the GAA and residents is to be called to discuss the problem and set up strict guidelines which can be enforced on every occasion there is a game at the county venue.

Nude bathers and lost children keep lifeguards busy Life guards around the Wexford coast were kept busy last year and their duties ranged from saving lives to ordering nude swimmers to put their clothes back on. The lifeguards were involved in four rescues and administered first aid six hundred and sixty three times, Water Safety Officer Tom Doyle told councillors at their January meeting. They also dealt with forty seven cases of lost children and provided advice on more than more two thousand occasions. Another important part of their work is accident prevention by providing important advice to beach users and they did this two hundred and fifty times in 2014. And they also dealt

with two hundred and eighty five ‘other’ issues and they covered a wide range of issues including having to deal with people who were swimming naked. The Co. Council gives a high priority to water safety and is involved in the provision and maintenance of four hundred ring buoys across the county. These are checked and maintained on a regular basis. Despite some high profile incidents involving vandalism to the buoys this was not a widespread problems, councillors were told. The life buoys are inspected twice per week and detailed reports on their condition are maintained by the local authority.

Council Deirdre Wadding. That was one of the facts to emerge as councillors discussed the impact of the latest protest at County Buildings when the protestors were allowed to take their protest inside the building following an agreement between Co. Secretary Pat Collins and Cllr. Wadding. However, several councillors were furious over the arrangement and insisted that in future all protests would have to take place outside the building and the Chief Executive, Tom Enright, said his first duty of care was to the staff who worked in the building and in that context it was not appropriate to have people protesting inside the Council’s Headquarters. Mr Enright also revealed the plight of the foreign investor who was forced to leave his car on the roadside away from County Buildings when met by a previous protest. There were sharp

exchanges over the issue when it was raised by Cllr.Robbie Ireton who described the protestors as a ‘mob’. Council Chairman Malcolm Byrne defended the right of everyone to protest but said he believed it should have been outside the building. Following the revelation by the Co. Secretary that the protest took place inside the building by agreement Cllr. Byrne said he was concerned about creating a precedent. There were angry exchanges following references to previous protests when a coffin was carried as part of the demonstration to the building. As members debated the matter Cllr. Larry O’Brien proposed that an outright ban on any protest taking place inside the building be adopted by the council. His view was strongly resisted by Cllr. Wadding and several Sinn Fein

Councillors. However, Cllr John Hegarty said the protests could not be controlled unless you had clear protocols. ‘You could have an agreement on one hundred but you could get two hundred or five hundred’, he said. Cllr Paddy Kavanagh said it was time to put rules and regulations in place. All types of protests took place outside buildings and people shouldn’t be afraid of the rain, he suggested. But Cllr Deirdre Wadding warned her colleagues of the consequences of imposing a ban. She said she had managed to maintain the goodwill of the protestors so far but if the ban went ahead she could not be responsible for the actions of other people. Cllr. Tony Dempsey fully supported the right to protest but said it should not take place in the workplace but outside the building.

Cllr. Oisin O’Connell strongly defended the right to have the protest inside Co. Hall. Fianna Fail councillors Keith Doyle and Michael Sheehan said the matter should be referred to the Protocol Committee for consideration. However, Cllr. Larry O’Brien insisted that he wanted to go ahead with his proposal: ‘Stand up and be counted now’, he urged Fianna Fail councillors. The Chairman Malcolm Byrne put forward what he said was a compromise. He proposed a ban on protests inside the building with the matter going to the protocol Committee to decide on its implementation. Some of his Fianna fail colleagues rejected this compromise and on a vote several of them voted against However, it was carried by 16 votes to 13 and all future protests inside Co. Hall have been banned as a result.

Wasting money in Courtown The €60,000 spent annually clearing silt from the harbour at Courtown is money wasted because shortly after the silt has been removed it washes back in again. That’s the view of Councillor Fionntan O Suilleabhain who told the January meeting of the Co. Council that a more permanent solution needed to be found. He suggested that the problem could be solved by constructing a type of ‘dog’s leg’ on the pier itself and he said that funds should be sought

for this purpose. The meeting heard that a consultants’ report would be necessary to establish the best way to proceed in Courtown and

it would cost in the region of €30,000. The Department of the Environment is being asked to provide the funding.

Problems with toilets Seaside public toilets are either in the wrong place or closed when people want to use them. That was the stark message from Cllr Robbie Ireton at the January meeting of Wexford Co. Council. Public toilet facilities in

Courtown are kept open through local involvement but are too far away from the beach while in Morriscastle the toilets are closed for several months of the year. Cllr Ireton said a local committee should be

approached to take over the running of the Morriscastle facility to ensure it stayed open throughout the year. Many people visited the area to walk on the beach during the winter months, he said.

Wexford Marinewatch in recruitment drive The highly successful Suicide Prevention organisation ‘Wexford Marinewatch’, has reopened recruitment for new volunteers for a short period and is looking for people from all walks of life who are willing to give up one night of their time a month to help others. Established in 2012, the organisation’s trained volunteers have prevented the deaths of 31 people in the Harbour so far and dealt with in excess of 100 incidents since its inception. Due to its success, the organisation is now expanding its operation and requires more volunteers. Patrolling the Bridge & Harbour areas several nights a week at key times, the volunteers identify, intercept and assist anyone who may be

in difficulty or contemplating suicide. Backed up by the Emergency Services including the Irish Coast Guard & RNLI, these persons are taken to safety and put in contact with other organisations who can also help.

There is no requirement to be able to swim, as volunteers do not enter the water. All training necessary is provided, including hands-on training with the various pieces of safety equipment used. The minimum entry age is 21 however there is

Massive cost of defending the coastline Maintaining and protecting Co. Wexford’s two hundred and fifty kilometres of coastline is a costly business with virtually all of it under constant attack from coastal erosion. But the coast, which has a total of thirty beaches, is hugely important to the local economy and is the county’s biggest tourist attraction. Only a very small piece of the coastline is

actually free from erosion and for the most part roads and houses have disappeared over the years as the sea eats into the land. Important coastal protection works in some areas have slowed the forward march of the sea but protecting the entire coastline is a non runner due to costs, it has been revealed. Cllr Paddy Kavanagh was told that coastal protection works are very

expensive costing in excess of €1m per km. He said the distance involved was the same as from Wexford to Galway so maintaining the coastline involved a huge task. Cllr. Ger Carthy expressed concern that not all parts of the coast received the same attention and claimed the area around Carne had been forgotten with no protection works carried out over the years.

Wexford gets the cash, Gorey has the artists Funding for the Arts in Co. Wexford is concentrated almost entirely around Wexford town with the bulk of the funding going to the Opera House. However, while Wexford appeared to be the centre of the arts in the county there ‘is arts beyond the Wexford District’ the Chairman of the

Enniscorthy Municipal District commented following a presentation on arts funding to the Co. Council’s January meeting, And Cllr. Robbie Ireton said that while other areas spoke of ‘budding artists’ North Wexford had the real thing with many with many accomplished local artists.

However, he said the tragedy was that they had to sell most of their work outside the county. In this context he said it was important that if pieces of arts were being placed in local areas members of the local community should be consulted about what would be appropriate.

Weighing recycling bins makes no sense Utter confusion reigns over how much people who have to pay to get their bins collected when new waste legislation takes effect in July. At the moment people pay a fixed sum to have their bins collected by a private operator on an annual basis. However, from the first of July next all bins, including compost and recycling bins, will have to be weighed before they are emptied and householders will be billed on the basis of how much they weigh. The revelation that recycling and compost bins will also be weighed has infuriated councillors who have warned that people could face big increases in their charges. Cllr George Lawlor has denounced the plan to weigh the recycling bins saying it made no sense at all. Cllr. Mary Farrell said it would discourage people from recycling.

Behind the plan to weigh all bins is an effort to stop people trying to avoid higher charges on their waste bin by putting unsuitable material in their compost and recycling bins. However, Cllr Lawlor said it was ludicrous and he condemned the plan. Co. Council Chairman Malcolm Byrne said the matter needed to be clarified.

Is swimming ban health and safety gone mad? Health and Safety, particularly in relation to water based activities is of utmost importance but an effort to save lives along the Wexford coast could in fact have the opposite effect. That’s the emerging view of many public representatives following the implementation of bye laws for Piers and Harbours which were enacted by Wexford Co. Council some months ago. Now some people are of the view that the whole thing is a case of health and safety running ahead of itself but water safety officials are adamant that there is good reason to impose a swimming ban in harbours along the Wexford coast… The problem is the fact that some of these harbours. Cahore on the east coast and Slade in the South, in particularly, have been locations for swimming and swimmi9ng lessons for years. In fact hundreds of young people over the years have learned to swim in these harbours

and there has never been a problem. Now, however, Swim Ireland has Indicated that with ‘No Swimming’ signs in place at these locations there is simply no way that they could set up swimming classes in the harbours, even if the ‘no

swimming’ rule was suspended for the duration of the classes. The Council’s Water Safety Officer, Tom Doyle has pointed out that swimming in harbours is hazardous because of boating activity, oil pollution and the varying depths of the water.

And Engineer Gerry Forde has pointed out that in the UK twenty people died while swimming in harbours last year. But these arguments have not impressed several members of the Council who have faced massive local protests over the swimming ban in the harbours. Cllr Larry O’Brien said it appeared to be a case of health and safety getting ahead of itself and pointed out that there were the same number of boats in Slade Harbour as there were twenty years ago while swimming has been going on the in the harbour for one hundred years without a problem. Apart from the amenity value of swimming in the harbours there is another big problem for local groups. Both Cahore Harbour and Slade are venues for major

fundraising swims around Christmas and New Year and these now also face the axe. Among the events affected by the ban are the New Year’s Day fundraising swim by the Cahore Inshore Rescue Group and the Hook Sub Aqua Club’s big fundraising event at the same time. Councillors have argued that far from saving lives the fact that the ban has k.o’d events like these will hinder the work of these important groups and could actually result in lives being put at risk. What’s perplexing councillors like Pip Breen, Martin Murphy, Larry O’Brien and others is the fact there was no real evidence for such an outright swimming ban in these small harbours . Cllr

Larry Fitzharris said he could accept a control on casual swimming but not one which prohibited events organised by some of the most professional and expert swimmers in the locality. Now the matter is to be reviewed but it may be very difficult for the local authority to get itself out of the bind that it finds itself in. Removing the signs and changing the

bye-laws will not be easy and everyone will be conscious of the fact that while there has been no problem in these harbours for a hundred years an incident occurring after the removal of the signs would have dreadful consequences for everyone involved. Nevertheless a full review has now been promised.

Lights to shine on John Barry A clean up of the filthy image which a silted up Crescent Quay provides for Wexford may be some way off, but light could be shed on John Barry in the not too distant future. The state of the Crescent, which fills up with silt and is very unsightly at low water levels has drawn complaints from visitors and locals alike and a number of councillors raised the issue at the January meeting of the Co. Council. Cllr. Fergie Kehoe said the Crescent was unsightly while Cllr Anthony Kelly said it was a disgrace. George Lawlor said he believed the problem was caused by an engineering issue which could be solved.

The matter is now to being investigated but it appears that a simple solution may not be possible because any changes to the structures in the harbour areas might solve the Crescent problem but could lead to difficulties elsewhere. However, the good news for the quayfront landmark is that plans are underway to light up the John Barry statue at night time.

Criminals could destroy tourism in North Wexford Thugs who are continuously breaking and entering mobile holiday homes in parks around Courtown are putting the entire North Wexford Tourist industry in jeopardy. Wexford Co. Council’s January meeting heard that there was a serious problem with holiday homes being entered and property stolen. However, Cllr. Robbie Ireton said the park owners were being given no support in trying to deal with the problem. He said it was terrible that some many people worked so hard to build up the tourist industry in North Wexford and this activity could destroy it. Angered over the lack of support in bringing people to justice he demanded an

Focus on tourism is key for Wexford jobs As we start a new year the unemployment figures for Co. Wexford remain stubbornly high. One of the reasons for this is almost certainly the fact that the county relied so heavily on construction during the boom years that there is now an enormous gap to fill. It wasn’t just that people were employed on the massive amount of construction that took place locally but many left the county every Monday morning for construction sites in Dublin and elsewhere. While there is an upturn in building it is not likely ever to return to those mad days of the Celtic

***

Tiger and that presents Wexford with a problem. With major factories almost a thing of the past, construction jobs in scarce supply and farming becoming less labour intensive all the time, many of the traditional sources of work in this county have either disappeared or offer far fewer opportunities than they did in the past. So where are the jobs to come from? Most will have to come from various areas in the service sector and the key to boosting that area of employment is to increase demand for goods and services. Of course some of that

increase in demand will come from an improvement in incomes but the bulk of it will come as a result of more people coming to visit the county. That is why an absolute priority now has to be given to boosting the tourist sector. As the centenary of 1916 approaches there will be a lot of interest in history and historical sites, and not just those associated with 1916. Promoting these and getting the county’s message out there is very important in this context and it’s good to see that various sectors in the county are coming together and taking every

Kathleen Codd Nolan, the councillor from Enniscorthy is certainly right when she says that the battlefield at Vinegar Hill has huge potential to attract people to both the county and the country and it really is strange and a missed opportunity that more has not been made of that location in the past.

Paris events shocked everyone The appalling events in Paris a couple of weeks ago rightly led to worldwide condemnation. It is difficult for normal people to begin to understand the depravity of individuals who would carry out such atrocities and let us hope that the security response which is evident in the aftermath of these terrible events ensures that they are repeated. In the wave of discussion which followed the incident there was much talk about free speech and the absolute right of people to express

their views. I of course strongly support freedom of expression but I can’t help wondering what the reaction would be in this country if a magazine or newspaper began to ridicule in a satirical manner leading figures in the religion followed by a majority of Irish people. I suspect that over time people would not be sanguine about the matter.

Almost half of population have no life insurance Almost half the population of Ireland, 1.6 million people have NO lifecover. Of those that have cover, most have only enough to cover their mortgage. Not only that, people think it’s far more expensive than it actually is. You never know what’s around the corner. That’s why planning ahead to protect you and your family financially if something happened to you is important. And in these challenging times it’s even more important because without a regular income coming into the household they could really struggle financially. We have a range of options to help you and your family cope financially if your income stopped due to an unexpected accident, illness or death. LIFE COVER If you own your own

home you’ll have mortgage protection. But, remember, mortgage protection will clear your mortgage and nothing else. That’s why Life Cover is so important. It pays your family a lump sum if you die which acts as a form of income replacement - just when they need it most. According to research, only 33% of people surveyed have a life

insurance product which is not linked with their mortgage.(Source: Amarach Research, April 2011) Life cover is something you can rely on. Arranging adequate cover is the easiest way to help secure your family’s financial future and give you peace of mind.

Schools turn their back on science The breakdown of the type of courses undertaken by Wexford students at Third Level makes interesting reading. The figure which was highlighted by the Co. Council Chairman Malcolm Byrne involved science maths and computing which attracted 19% of students nationally but just 17% from Wexford and he was making the point that when employers are looking for these type of graduates it is important that every effort be made to get Wexford on par with the national average. Of course this all begins in the schools and a more surprising fact was that just a single Co. Wexford school was represented at the BT Young Scientists exhibition earlier this month. This was not just surprising but

shocking. There was a time when several Wexford schools were not only represented but brought home an array of trophies and honours in many categories. I remember in my early days in journalism there was a policy of featuring all the local exhibitors in the paper and at one stage the numbers reached such a level that we couldn’t fit them all in and had to run the feature over a number of weeks. There may be good reasons for the failure to enter the BT competition but at the very least it does suggest that the emphasis on science in our second level schools has waned over the years and if that is the case then it needs to be addressed.

Time to look elsewhere on parking

App led husband to more than a friend

Given that parking and parking charges are such a hot topic in towns all over the county I was interested to see than in Roscommon town, which would probably be somewhat similar in size to Enniscorthy, maybe a little bigger, does not have any parking charges at all and

I knew the obsession with mobile Apps would lead to trouble eventually. And in the case of Mark Bierney it didn’t just lead to trouble, but an app cost him his life. Possessive and controlling husband, Oktay Kilic was a bit suspicious of what exactly his lawyer wife was doing when she was meeting ‘clients’ out of hours. So he got hold of a ‘find a friend’ App and started following her movements. Eventually one evening it led him to a country lane where he found his wife ‘involved in sexual activity’ with Mr Bierney. Mr Kilic used a kitchen

some other towns no longer charge for parking on Saturdays. Perhaps our councillors should take a little trip around the country to see what works in towns of a similar size and then go for the success stories, at least on a trial basis.

A short man defeat for the Queen Did you ever think you’d see the day when an Irish man dressed as a woman playing the part of the original Irish mammy would prove more popular than the Queen herself with her subjects on Christmas Day? Well that’s exactly what Brendan O’Carroll achieved this year. When the overnight viewing figures were published the Queen was ahead but when those who watched on catch-up were added Brendan came out in front. If we were talking about the performance of one of her horses I suppose we’d

use the term she was beaten by a short head, although in this case a more accurate description would be to say she was beaten by a short man.

knife to stab Mr Bierney repeatedly killing him on the spot. The events have been unfolding at Leeds Crown Court where Mr Kilic has denied murder. It’s not an App I’d recommend to a friend, or even to an enemy for that matter.

News Local Enterprise Office bringing quality business training to County Wexford

Council Diary Hasselhoff Robbie, Paddy Kavanagh’s Opera, Davy Hynes’ ashes and why George wants to play Deirdre’s drum Where will Cllr. Davy Hynes put the ashes from his open fire? Who was the naked swimmer and was he in Courtown? Is Paddy Kavanagh to lead an opera society in Drumgoold? Is Robbie Ireton to become the David Hasselhoff of Courtown and why does George Lawlor want a ‘lend’ of Deirdre Wadding’s drum? These are the issues which concerned the members of Wexford Co. Council when they met for the first time in 2015 last week. They were a bit annoyed too (well very annoyed really, at least some of them were) about an anti water charge protest which had taken place that morning inside Co. Hall. Waterwoman Deirdre Wadding had organised that protest, but like it or not she will not bet organising another one inside the Co. Hall-------at least not with the consent of the authorities. Larry O’Brien is now the ‘father’ of the Council and he was determined to

ensure that there would be none of this type of protest in ‘a place of word’. Despite some fierce opposition he eventually had his way. But that wasn’t the only thing concerning Larry. On hearing that lifeguards had to deal with a number of incidents of nude bathing last year he wanted to know if they had been in Courtown. Robbie Ireton looked bemused. But what is it about Robbie?. Chairman Byrne painted an image of the Labour man becoming the David Hasslehoff of Courtown following his suggestion that lifeguards be given jet skis to patrol the beach. And then there were the ashes from Davy Hynes’ fire. He was concerned about people facing huge waste bills when charging by weight comes in. As an example he said himself had an open fire and the ashes would have to be put in the waste bin adding to the weight and the cost for Davy and

many more like him. But why would hey have to weigh the recycling bins, councillors wondered. In case people put nonrecyclable items in them, it seems. Like Davy trying to put the ash in the recycling bin to save money, the Chairman seemed to suggest. Davy was not amused. According to Ger Carthy that was not the only problem Davy faced. His recycling bin would be full of old Labour Party posters he no longer had any use for. George Lawlor is going to protest about the whole thing and he intends to get ‘ a lend’ of Deirdre’s drum to help him make his point. But not before he tries to get some arts funding for groups he is involved in like the Wexford Light Opera. Funding should be more evenly spread, he believes. Paddy Kavanagh simply thinks Wexford’s Mayor wants all the money for himself. Ouch! Perhaps Paddy wants

some for his Drumgoold Opera Society, George ventured. But there were serious matters too. Like the Council handing over PPS numbers belonging to their tenants to Irish Water. Objections to that came from Johnny Mythen his SF colleagues, and others. But some members were concerned because the Council could be liable if the tenants didn’t pay. Trying to reach a compromise Fianna Fail’s Keith Doyle said he was sure that even the proposers of the motion didn’t want a situation to arise where a Council tenant didn’t pay their water charge and somebody else ended up paying for the water they used. But, of course that’s exactly what they want, thundered Paddy Kavanagh. Somebody else to pay for their water. The Provost of Trinity College, Patrick Prendergast will address the February meeting of the Council .

Register now for this year’s Hope & Dream 10 2015 is the fourth consecutive year for the Hope & Dream 10 and it is a great testament to the kindness, generosity and loyalty of the people of Enniscorthy, the whole of County Wexford and beyond. The event took place for the first time in 2012 and was the brainchild of John O'Leary and Tom Herlihy who along with Alan Maher and Teo Leacy ran the event with incredible professionalism and poise. After running the event for three years, the men have handed the reins over to the Hope Cancer Support Centre, who will hopefully continue to grow the Hope & Dream brand over the coming years. Hope & Dream 10 has raised €389,216 since it began in 2012, which has been divided equally between the Hope Cancer Support Centre and the Share a Dream Foundation in both 2012 and 2013 and the Hope Cancer Support Centre and Console in

2014. This money has been vital to these charities to continue to offer the fantastic services they provide to the people of County Wexford. As we look forward to 2015, the Hope & Dream 10 committee wants to make this the biggest year yet and is aiming for over 2,250 entrants this year. The cost of the event is 100% sponsored by local businesses and all donations by the local people. We commend you all for the good will you have shown to this event since its inception. Keen to keep things local, we have sourced our t-shirts locally this year with Hogan print in Enniscorthy who have provided printing to the event over the years. Raceprint.ie is a new service offered by Hogan print and we are delighted to be keeping the business in Enniscorthy this year. The cost of the T-Shirts has been covered again this year by the Enniscorthy Credit Union

to whom we are extremely grateful for their generous sponsorship enabling us to provide each participant with a unique 2015 t-shirt. So as the new year is upon us, let’s all make a conscious effort to embrace a challenge, get ourselves healthier and fitter and raise money for two very worthy charities by registering for Hope & Dream 10 2015 and join us on the Promenade in Enniscorthy on April 12th. This year we are again offering both the 10 mile and 10k route to both walkers and joggers over the age of 18. For further information on the event look us up on Facebook, twitter and on the website www.hope and dream10.com. We also have a weekly coverage in the Enniscorthy Echo which will feature training tips, nutrition advice, getting race ready advice and stories from people who are partaking in the event.

One of the competition judges George Lawlor, Mayor of Wexford and also no stranger to the stage commented on the weekends auditions, “I think I can speak on behalf of all the judges when I say that the standard for the competition is very high and there have been brilliant performances throughout the weekend, all of those who came along to audition should be very proud of themselves. I’m looking forward to the semi finals, it’s going to be one tough competition."

Wexford Lions Club in partnership with Wexford Arts Centre, has announced application details for its annual exhibition and to invited submissions from local artists and anyone with an interest in art regardless of their level of skill or previous experience. The annual Lions Club exhibition celebrates local talent and offers a platform for artists who are at various stages of their careers as well as those with an interest in art and who wish to see their work realised within a gallery context. For this reason, it is an important show within the Wexford Arts Centre’s programme. The Wexford Lions Club Open Exhibition will be on view in the lower and upper galleries of Wexford Arts Centre from Saturday 14th March until Saturday 4th April 2015. Building on the success of last year’s exhibition and the remarkably high quality of work received, the theme for the 2015 exhibition has again been left entirely open. Participants can submit work on a variety of subjects ranging from land to sea, figure and fauna, rural beauty, urban narratives, pure imagination, total abstraction and everything else in between. Also, this year we will again feature the Young Lions gallery, dedicated exclusively to the work of young, budding

Parking for bicycles Bicycle users in Wexford town are to get a new year gift with new that three bicycle parking stations are to be set up in the urban area. There h as been criticism for some time about the lack of facilities for parking bicycles in the town. Now the matter is to be addressed with parking stations to be placed at Crescent Quay, Wellington Quay and at the Wexford train station.

The North Wexford SPCA is always on the lookout for new volunteers to help in the kennels or cattery. If you can spare even only 1 hour, please make contact with us on 0876392531, send an email to nwspca@hotmail.com or join our Facebook page.

artists. We also wish to promote the talents of local sculptors and those working in three dimensional forms, requesting that these too participate so that we may produce an exhibition which truly encompasses the diverse nature of visual art and the array of talent found within Wexford and its surrounding areas. Interested persons are asked to complete an application form and collect a cartridge/watercolour paper or canvas from Wexford Arts Centre. If artists are interested in submitting 3D works, they must also fill out an application form but should note that the work must be no larger than 35(w) x 35(l) x 50(h) cms. Applications are limited to one per person and as the number of artists participating in the exhibition is limited, applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis. Application forms and canvases/boards are available now and the deadline for submission of completed work to Wexford Arts Centre is Friday 6th March 2015. Exhibition entry fee is €10.00 per applicant. All artworks must be submitted unframed on or before this date and on the paper/canvas provided by the arts centre.

Slow changing traffic lights Motorists in Wexford town who have faced long delays at some of the town’s traffic lights have not been imaging that they are taking a long time to change colour. Problems with the sensors meant that the sequences on some set of lights were faulty, it has emerged. This led to problems in several areas, but particularly for traffic on Wexford quays and coming over the bridge. The problem has now been rectified. The matters was raised by councillors Anthony Kelly and Fergie Kehoe at a meeting of the Traffic Management Committee.

Sport Gaelic Football Roundabout

Senior Football Championship Draws have been made The draws for the senior football championship were made at a county board meeting last Tuesday night with the twelve teams divided into two groups of six as usual. Group A have the following teams: St Fintans, Adamstown, Shelmaliers, St Annes, Fethard and Sarsfields. Group B is made up of St Martins, Starlights, St James, Gusserane, Horeswood and Castletown. They are two interesting groups with possibly Group A the strongest, at least on paper. Of course it contains county champions St Annes and they will be going all out to retain their title. It is my considered opinion that they were really caught on the hop in 2013 and should have three in a row at this stage. Shelmaliers will probably be their closest challengers in this group as there was very little to choose between them both in their group game and in the county semi-final last year Fethard will also want to get back in the ball game after getting to the county final two years ago and will be dangerous opponents for anyone. Having recently been

to a county final will be of great benefit to their younger players and now , being two years older and more mature, they could be ready to mount a major challenge again. I see where Kevin Rowe returned to action for Wexford in the O’Byrne Cup and this very talented player will be a major boost to his club this year; he was an incalculable loss to the Seasiders in their county final loss of two years ago. St Fintans did very well last year and they will be hoping to push on again this time round. They have a very talented footballer in Jim Rossiter. They also have a real leader in Joey Wadding but they will miss their prolific score taker Donal Shanley who is studying in the United States at the moment. However, they have a terrific team spirit and will be a pushover for nobody. Adamstown will be happy to have preserved their senior status, giving their best display

of the year when beating Kilanerin in the Relegation final. They will have a stronger panel this year and will be keen to make a bigger impression. Sarsfields started very well against Shelmaliers in the quarter final last year and were ahead by a few points early on but an Eoghan Nolan goal changed the

complexion of the game and Shels more or less put the game to bed early in the second half. The Sars are a bit of an enigma as on their day they have the quality to challenge any team but they can have poor days too. If they can develop more consistency they could surprise a few

teams. In Group B the 2013 county champions St Martins have the quality to bounce back but I suppose it will all depend on how much they are prepared to put into football as they will be certainly targeting a big run in the senior hurling championship. With players like Ciaran Lyng, Daithi Waters and Paidi Kelly they certainly have the quality. Gusserane will have been bitterly disappointed with their county final defeat and will be very keen to go one better this year. It will be 40 years since they last won the county senior title (1975) and they will be surely making a mighty effort and if they can tighten their defence they certainly have the forward talent to go the whole way. St James may have been lucky to win the Intermediate final but they have been knocking on the senior door for a number of years now and having finally re-entered senior ranks will be very keen to make a big impression.

They have top players in Matthew O’Hanlon, Kevin O’Grady and Graeme Molloy but every other player is going to have to take it to the next level to ensure sustained competitiveness. Horeswood have had a glorious innings over the last ten years and simply cannot go on for ever but four championships in that space of time is a great return for a really talented bunch of players. They will miss P.J Banville but still have serious performers in David Larkin and Declan Murphy both of whom are getting deserved runs with Wexford at the moment. They are probably in the midst of a transitional period but you can never write them off. Castletown have been one of the most consistent teams around ever since they won their last title in 2010 and had they taken some of their first half goal chances in the semifinal against Gusserane last year the game could well have ended differently. Conor Carty

was having a great year and was a huge loss to them when he got injured. They were playing a lovely brand of football and could be serious contenders again this year. Starlights showed when they beat St Martins last year that they were a match for any team but sadly they were very depleted for various reasons when they were well beaten by Gusserane but if they can get all their top players onto the field they would be quietly confident of taking on allcomers. They missed John Hudson last year and a fully fit John would still be a real test for any defence in my view. The games throw in in April with St Fintans v St Annes, Fethard v Sarsfields and Shelmaliers v Adamstown in Group A while its St Martins v Gusserane, St James v Horeswood and Castletown v Starlights in GroupB, being the first series of games. It is intended to play three group games before the break this year.

Feeling the post Christmas financial pinch? Too much food and wine aren’t the only things causing post Christmas hangovers in 2015. A recent survey published by the ILCU found that it takes over 8 weeks for consumers to financially recover from overspending at Christmas and certainly many families will be feeling the financial pinch in January 2015. Gorey Credit Union is advising its members and the public to use the start of the year wisely to get their family finances in order. Whether it’s a review of household budgets, paying off outstanding debt or putting a savings plan in place – Gorey Credit Union is best placed to help. A recent survey showed that 51% of consumers expected to borrow money to get through the Christmas 2014 period, with 6% approaching moneylenders to cover these costs. Gorey Credit Union would like to remind people that they offer fair, competitive loan rates, that are capped by law, which are significantly cheaper than loans from moneylenders. So if this year you are planning to buy a new car, carry out home improvements, take a holiday or are preparing for a special event, Gorey Credit Union can help make those

plans become a reality. Gorey Credit Union has been in operation for over 49 years and currently has almost 21,000 members, a growth of 3.25% in the past 12 months. In 2014, Gorey Credit Union provided approx. €15.4 million to those in need of small modest loans. The knock on effect for local businesses has been invaluable, and the economic impact for local communities is unquantifiable. We ask our members to shop local, which will help save local jobs now and into the future for the people in our community. The importance of the local credit union cannot be underestimated and the continued availability of local, friendly and accessible financial services is of vital importance in local communities. Gorey Credit Union does things differently and provides a safe place for your savings and small modest loans which are the very core of our business. The ethos remains the same today as when credit unions were established over 50 years ago. Despite enormous change, in addition to new and increased regulatory considerations, Gorey Credit Union remains a vital and accessible provider of essential financial

services. As member needs grow, Gorey Credit Union is very much looking to the future and to providing new, enhanced products and services – like: travel and car insurance offered through CoverU.ie, electronic payment services, direct debits, debit cards, ATMs, student loan draw and specialised loan rates. It is worth checking out what your local credit union has on offer. Barry Monaghan Operations Manager of Gorey Credit Union said: The New Year doesn’t have to be fraught with unnecessary financial stress and debt. We are urging members and the public alike to look at their finances, highlight where their money is going, and take those first steps towards effective budgeting and money management. Talk to us and if you are considering a loan, see how Gorey Credit Union can help before turning to moneylenders. Our credit union prides itself on its innovative people focused approach to loans, savings and other financial services and continues to work for the mutual benefit and general welfare of our members. Our uniqueness lies in our difference to other financial institutions and this can be seen in the way we approach our services and how we deal with our members”.

‘Govt/ wrong to drop age poll’ The Chairman of Wexford County Council, Malcolm Byrne, has criticised the decision of the Government not to proceed with the promised referendum to reduce the voting age to 16. Wexford County Council had carried a motion unanimously in favour of this move and it was also recommended by the Constitutional Convention.

"Such a poll would be an ideal way to stimulate real debate about young people's engagement in politics, Cllr. Byrne said. There have been a variety of reasons put forward for the lack of involvement of young people in political life. The opportunities for success and to influence Irish life are perceived to be in areas other

than public office; the perceived irrelevancy of the Irish political system to real life; the failure of the political parties to realistically involve young people. The language of our political leadership is often not encouraging. But contrary to popular belief, young people are interested in politics. Issues ranging from globalisation to

the cost of college to the environment to car insurance will feature in teenage discussions. But consumer power is often seen as more effective than going out to vote and traditional political organisations such as party or trade union branches are seen as toothless in comparison to say, raising an issue through social media. "

Clash over where to put disabled parking space A bid to have a disable parking space located at the top of a Wexford town street which houses a number of government offices in addition to the post office and credit union led to sharp exchanges between Mayor George Lawlor and Independent Councillor Ger Carthy at a meeting of the Traffic Management committee. Cllr Carthy wanted to have the disabled space located at the top of Anne Street to enable people access the Main Street. He said a disabled space at

South Main Street had been removed and this could replace it. However, Mayor George Lawlor said engineering

adv ice would have to be taken about the location of any disabled space and indicated that the location

mentioned by Cllr. Carthy might not be suitable. But the Independent councillor insisted that what he was asking was reasonable and said there was a lack of access to that part of the Main Street since an existing space was removed. When the Mayor again questioned the suitability of the location and said members couldn’t just come to a meeting and have disabled parking spaces located where they wanted Cllr Carthy said he did not want to become

involved in political point scoring with the Mayor. Eventually a compromise was reached which involves putting a disabled parking space outside the town’s Main Post Office which is half way up Anne Street. Cllr. Carthy accepted this location when engineer Sinead Casey said it would be more suitable than at the top of the street.

Liam Walsh Boxing Tournament raised â‚Ź12,000 The inaugural Liam Walsh Memorial Boxing Tournament has been hailed a great success by club organisers and the Walsh Family. The tournament which celebrates the contribution the late Liam Walsh has made to boxing has raised â‚Ź12,000 for St. Joseph’s/St. Ibar’s boxing club. â‚Ź2,300 was also raised through raffle ticket sales for Wexford Hospice Home Care. Billy Walsh, Head Coach at the IABA High Performance Unit and Liam’s son said, “It was certainly a night to remember and we are delighted about how it all went. On behalf of the Walsh family, St. Ibar’s/St. Joseph’s Club and, the organisers of the tournament, I want to thank everyone who supported the event in any way. The support was

absolutely amazing and is much appreciated. Dad would have been very proud. Wexford’s boxing Olympian Adam Nolan was awarded “The Liam Walsh Memorial Trophy by adjudicators as the most promising boxer on the night. Organisers are already starting to prepare for this year’s tournament the date of which will be announced in the coming months.
