The traditional Christmas fast takes place outside St. Iberius Church on the town’s Main Street and this year’s total was up more than €2,000 on last year’s figure. The fast has been running for more than two decades and has raised tens of thousands of euro for local charities over the years. The beneficiaries this year

included St. Vincent De Paul, Cancer Research, Wexford’s Women’s Refuge, Family Life Services and South East Regional Transport. Rural festivals may get Council cash The town versus country battle at local government level is beginning to hot up in the Wexford District where plans to devote the Council’s entire spend on festivals to events in the Wexford Urban area has been blocked by Independent Councillor Ger Carthy. And Carthy’s efforts could provide a windfall for many rural festivals which until now have been starved of local authority cash.

To date Council cash has gone to urban based events in Wexford many of which are run on a commercial basis by private operators while rural festivals have been given no support. But that may change as a result of the reorganisation of local government with both town and country now under the control of a single local authority on which rural members have a majority. In the past it has been

argued that major urban based festivals and events play an important part in bringing people into the area. However, it is likely that a strong case will be made for many rural festivals on the basis that they play a vital part in making the county a more attractive place for tourists to visit during the summer months. In the South of the county events like the Tagoat Steam Rally, Kilmore Seafood Festival and the Bannow

Rathangan Show, which attracts thousands of people to Wexford from many parts of the country, are likely to be supported in their efforts to get Council cash to help run their events. The initial funding plan put before Councillors before Christmas was effectively withdrawn to give members and opportunity to come up with a list of events they would like to see supported from outside the town.

Council meetings may soon be broadcast to the world Meetings of Wexford Co. Council could soon be broadcast throughout the world with people as far away as the United States and Australia being able to watch live as local councillors debate the state of rural roads and the quality of the water supply. The Council’s Protocol Committee has agreed to investigate the feasibility of live streaming of Council meetings following a suggestion from Council Chairman, Malcolm Byrne. Cllr. Byrne has been on an advocate of embracing

technology at Council level for some time and has previously suggested the use of video conferencing at District Council meetings. Cost and technical issues will now be examined and any decisi9on on the issue will have to come before the full Council. Some councillors believe

that the live streaming of meetings would generate more interest in local government, particularly among younger people.

Political Notebook

All eyes on Fianna Fail The line up for the next general election in the Wexford constituency will start to become clear in the near future when both Sinn Fein and Fianna Fail select their candidates. The main opposition parties are concentred that there might be an early general election and they want to be ready for it whenever it happens. Sinn Fein is likely to be first in the field and the speculation is that Oisin O’Connell, the New Ross councillor will be the chosen one but that is by no means certain. For the moment we will look at Fianna Fail where the selection convention has been delayed due to the illness of the party’s sitting TD, John Browne. The Enniscorthy man has been under some pressure

to make up his mind about standing again and it appears that some of the party’s top brass would be happier if he left the field at this stage. However, despite the scale of his illness Browne is his own man and will not be pushed around by party HQ. However, it seems if he does want a place on the ticket at the next election he may have to go before convention and seek the support of delegates because outgoing deputies will not be automatic. Much will depend on Browne’s decision but interesting news is emerging from the Fianna Fail camp about likely candidates. Perhaps the most surprising gossip is that the Gorey councillor Joe Sullivan is emerging

as a possible candidate in important boxes and an area where up to now would be the ideal South Malcolm Byrne had been Wexford candidate. considered a shoe in for the nomination. And a man from the past has ridden back to the centre of things in the party with Hugh Byrne and some other former party heavyweights putting in a big effort to have Byrne’s daughter Aoife selected as one of the candidates. All parties face the problem of having to find 30% female candidates this time around and Byrne is being promoted in that context. She also has a number of other Malcolm Byrne advantages living in Wexford but originally from the New Ross area. When her candidacy Her supporters argue was first promoted few that she ticks a lot of the believed she had a chance

of being on the eventual ticket but informed sources say the odds on her getting party support are shortening. However, there is no shortage of potential candidates with Michael Sheehan in New Ross also likely to make a determined bid for a place. Byrne, however, could be a significant obstacle for him to overcome because she could be promoted as both a New Ross and Wexford candidate. There is talk too that newly elected Ballycullane councillor Michael Whelan may put his hat in the ring. James Browne will obviously only be a candidate if his father stands down while the situation in Gorey is

intriguing with party insiders saying that at the moment Joe Sullivan would have more support within the party than Malcolm Byrne. This is important because all paid up party members will be involved in the selection process this time around so the contenders with the strongest support among the membership will have an advantage. Much of Malcolm’s support comes from people who are not active in the party and indeed from across the political divide in the Gorey area. In an election situation that would be a distinct advantage but it will be no help in actually getting through convention. There will be a lot of jockeying for position early in the New Year with the convention likely to be held in the Springtime or when John Browne makes up his mind about running or not.

News Plans to look at Wexford’s traffic problems Traffic problems in Wexford town are to be the subject of a detailed examination over the next few months in a bid to come up with a comprehensive plan to tackle bottlenecks which have developed in the system. It is now several years since large areas of the town became one way under a major traffic management plan. Some parts of that overall plan for the town were never implemented following local opposition. Now, several years later

problems have arisen in some areas including King Street/Bunkers Hill and the quays both north of Wexford bridge and south on to Trinity Street. At times serious congestion develops in these areas and some local councillors are pushing for a plan to tackle the problem. However, the Director of Services and Wexford Town Manager, Tony Larkin has ruled out any piecemeal approach to the problem because he said dealing with an issue in one area could have unforeseen

knock on consequences causing problems in another location. Mr Larkin is also currently reviewing the parking situation in the town which has been subject to much criticism from local business owners. The results of various traffic surveys and the views of local representatives will be put together at a meeting of a new Traffic Management Committee in the New Year with a view to coming up with plans to ease congestion.

GER WALSH Parking and traffic should be 2015 priority There was a great effort this year to get people to shop locally with events organised in all the major towns and a range of special attractions put on to try and keep people at home. Personally I’m not so sure that Dublin holds that great attraction for people any more in terms of Christmas shopping. Certainly it has the range of shops but that’s about the only positive it has going for it. A day out in the capital city will leave you considerably poorer, regardless of what bargains you pick up in the shops. First there is the expense of parking which can add a hefty sum to the cost of your day out and that is only the beginning of it. Eating, drinking and everything else is more expensive in Dublin than it is down the country.

So regional centres may no longer be facing quite as a big a threat from Dublin in the sense that people feel there is greater value to be had outside places like Wexford. That presents a great opportunity for regional towns and it is one which should be grasped. Whether ice rinks or the chance to cuddle up under the stars in mid-December to watch a movie or listen to a band is the complete answer to that riddle I don’t know, but they seem popular and you have to give people credit for any initiative aimed at bringing more business to an area. While a festive atmosphere is important to people--------and personally I don’t think that any of our towns have ever lacked that in the run up to Christmas with many local

groups providing tremendous entertainment and raising a tidy sum for charity at the same-------what people really want is for as much of the hassle as possible to be taken out of the annual task that is Christmas shopping. That means principally ease of parking and good traffic flow. You can have all the atmosphere you like but if people are stuck in traffic for three times as long as it took them to make the journey from home in the first place and then if they can’t find a place to park the Christmas

experience is not going to be a good one. To be fair to some councillors, particularly in Enniscorthy, they have recognised the whole parking issue as one which is very important to shoppers. It is perhaps something which should be moved higher up the agenda when people look at trying to bring more business to our urban centres in 2015.

D’Arcy’s difficult job Senator Michael D’Arcy is one of the Oireachtas Members sitting on the Banking Enquiry. It's an important task which the Gorey man is involved in and hopefully one which will provide some answers to very important questions which people have about the whole collapse of the country’s economy back in 2008/2009. There is some profile and publicity attached to the role but is a very tough job which Michael has landed himself. There is a huge commitment involved in being part of the investigation and the members have to be in attendance for every single piece of evidence. This will undoubtedly tie up the Fine Gael senator for long periods of time and there are those who suggest that

this time consuming mission will not help his chances of winning back the Dail seat he lost four years ago because it will leave him with less time on the ground in North Wexford. If that is the case it is a sad reflection on politics in Ireland because being a member of the Oireachtas should be about more than attending funerals and popping into birthday parties. In fact sitting on a committee like this is exactly what Oireachtas members should be doing. However, one suspects that among some members of the electorate Michael will not get the credit he certainly deserves for being part of this important and time consuming task.

Abortion likely to be election issue As another year draws to a close you really would be forgiven for thinking that some things never change. As we say goodbye to 2014 the abortion debate has jumped back to centre stage again and it looks as if it may remain there for a good part of the New Year. This government is committed to not holding a referendum on abortion, but one suspects that it will be an issue during the next general

election campaign. It may not be a central issue, but it could have a deciding influence on how some people cast their votes and in a tight election that could be very important. We will no doubt hear extreme arguments on both sides of the debate over the coming months often coming from people who have little or no practical knowledge of the issues involved. The one thing which often strikes me during these debates is how

intolerant people on each side of it can be most of the time. Both sides would also suggest that they are motivated by compassion but sometimes their conduct would lead you to believe that they have very little compassion or respect for anyone who does not share their point of view, however flawed it may be, one hundred per cent.

Oh EU you have done it again The European Union has been at it again. Just before Christmas the court handed down a ruling which classed obesity as a disability under the Equality at Work legislation which in effect means that employers will in future have to provide overweight people with larger seats, special parking spaces and other special facilities. The ruling resulted

from a case taken by twenty five stone Karsten Kaltott, a Danish child care worker who was so overweight that he had to be assisted by colleagues to tie children’s shoelaces. The local authority which employed him felt he was unable to do the job and terminated his employment. The EU court ruled that the origin of a disability is irrelevant, even if gross

obesity is caused by overeating or gluttony. So in the eyes of the EU Court it would be all right to have a twenty five stone plus person as a fitness instructor even if it meant having to employ a couple of extra people to lift him on and off the fitness machines and also possibly having to employ a medical team on standby ----------just in case.

From People Before Profit to profit before people Fianna Fail councillor Fergie Kehoe turned 50 just before Christmas and he was a little disappointed not to get a special birthday greeting from the Mayor, George Lawlor, during the final Wexford Municipal District meeting of the year. But the big 50 did not go unmarked. When councillors adjourned for tea after the meeting Cllr Deirdre Wadding sang ‘Happy Birthday’ especially for a delighted Fergie. Sinn Fein’s Anthony Kelly said it was a case of the People Before Profit Party singing greetings for the Profit Before People Party.

Chronicle December 31, 2014 Dog attacks child, owner attacks mother When a Staffordshire bull terrier attacked a six year old girl, knocking her to the ground and mauling her, what did the dog’s seventy year old owner do?, Rush to pull the dog off the young girl, roar at the dog and command him to go away, get a stick and give him a good belt to get him away or none of these. Well the answer is not only none of these but what Philip Rhodes actually did was attack the young girl’s mother as she tried to rescue her young daughter. Instead of wrestling the dog off the child, he wrestled

the girl’s mother to the ground and pinned her there while urging ‘Bruno’ to leave the girl alone. The poor child suffered a severed lip, punctured leg and wounds to her back which resulted in her spending a few days in hospital and undergoing surgery. As I have often said before, fact really is stranger than fiction. The child’s mother Karen told a court in Greater Manchester that she got a strong smell of alcohol from the dog’s owner.

You’ve finally made it when a housing estate gets your name Members of the local Municipal District Councils are still finding their feet in terms of what their responsibilities and roles are, however, one function they clearly have is to name housing estates, roundabouts and streets and recently both Wexford and Gorey councillors spent some time engaged in that process. In nearly all cases roads

infrastructure were to be named after them while they are still around. Brendan Howlin: As the most senior politician in the county the Labour TD who has been in national politics for more than thirty years will one day likely have streets, houses, maybe even a roundabout named in his honour. ‘Howlin Heights’ is a name that comes to mind but it would probably be inappropriate. However, an estate near the Minister’s home may already have a name very much in keeping with his role in recent times. It’s called ‘Ard Uisce’ or High Water.

Deirdre Wadding: As the first People Before Profit representative ever elected in Wexford, Deirdre has secured her place in history. Given her record as a protestor and march organiser surely there would be no better way to honour her than with ‘Wadding Parade’ Paddy Kavanagh: The Fine Gael councillor from Enniscorthy is well known for his straight talking and direct views and has never been afraid to go on national radio to address

From banging EDM to mellow rock the charts had everything this year. Since we have come to the end of the year I’ve decided to have a look back on the year that has passed and pick my favourite 10 tracks of the year, now I must say this has been extremely difficult as i could have easily picked 50. 10. A Great Big World Ft Christina Aguilera – Say Something Never would I have thought Christina Aguilera would ever feature in a list of songs that I like but her collaboration with A Great Big world is quite excellent, simple piano chords and simple lyrics combine in what I can just describe as a great emotional song. 9. Nico & Vinz – Am I Wrong Probably only a one hit wonder from these fellas but what a one hit wonder it is, reaching top 10 around the world in the charts and it’s not hard to see why , don’t even know what Genre it would go under but its catchy and its good and worthy of my top 10. 8. Mark Ronson Ft Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk

turn-outs, so hopefully this year will be no different. Come down a raise a glass with us for the New Year! :D

One of the most recent songs on my list is the very funky Uptown funk produced by the genius who is Mark Ronson , the man behind so many top hits in the last decade and with Bruno Mars on vocals this song will be played at party’s for years to come , great tune and dance floor filler. 7. Armin Van Buuren & Andrew Rayel – EIFORYA This absolute belter of a trance track is my most played song of the year on my itunes so I had to put it on the list , from Exhilarating build ups to soft female vocals this track has it all , had the pleasure of seen both Dj’s play live during the year and they didn’t fail. 6. Vance Joy – Mess Is Mine Vance Joy’s music is something you would just never get tired of listening to , Mess is mine and his Huge hit Riptide is regular played through my headphones and im sure we will be hearing a lot more from Vance Joy in the coming years. 5. American Authors – Best Day of My Life New York Rockers American Authors shot to fame this year with the release of this song , from TV adverts to music channel overload this song has been played everywhere and its totally understandable why , its brilliant !! 4. Magic! – Rude Despite been well overplayed throughout the year I must say I still have a huge soft spot for this song. With a reggae feel off it and brilliant sing along lyrics this is also another great party song. 3. Milky Chance – Stolen Dance Folktronica (Yes that’s a genre) act Milky Chance produced one of my favourite tracks of the year with Stolen Dance , with their unique sound it’s hard not to pass this tune with a point of view about it , you’re either going to adore it or hate it , I sure do love it !! 2. Hozier – From Eden All the way from Bray County Wicklow and only 2 years ago was playing in Chocolate in Wexford Town and now is touring the world and his album went to number 2 in America which is insane !! His album is insane and a must buy for everyone, check out From Eden, whopper of a tune!!! 1. George Ezra – Cassy O’

Brian, Michael, Brian Jr, Annmarie and Colm Ivers getting ready to take part in the Michael Foley CBS, Enniscorthy Bursary run on St. Stephens Day.

Tune of the year goes to George Ezra, the man is a machine and is the best person in the world, 100 times better than Ed Sheeren, George Ezra is the most underrated man in music, and his album Wanted on Voyage is possibly one of my favourite Albums ever!! , also just announced to play electric picnic, I can’t wait to see him do his thing live, George <3 <3

Sport Gaelic Football Roundabout

Less may now be more when it comes to games for young players I see where Coiste na nOg are disappointed that they did not provide more games for the young GAA players in Wexford this year but, perhaps, given the fact that we are such a dual county with most of the players also participating in other sports such as soccer and rugby, playing less games and putting much greater emphasis on recovery would be a more enlightened approach and could have real long term benefits for the GAA in the county. Professor Niall Moyna of Dublin City University told an Irish Independent Investigation team recently that

“what has happened over the last ten years or so is that the training regimes involved in participation (for young people) have gone out of kilter altogether. They’re imposing tremendous demands on a player and the problem we have in Ireland is that we’re a crazy country for participating.” Professor Moyna went on to state that injuries are now common among teenagers that were “unthinkable 20 years ago” and that many young people were suffering from “overtraining syndrome” because they were not allowing

St Vincent’s going to take some beating! One could only be impressed by St Vincent’s of Dublin last Sunday as they comprehensively outplayed Rhode of Offaly in the Leinster club football final. They have really brought the club game to a new level and I cannot see them being beaten at this stage although I would expect the Galway champions, Corofin, to give them a decent game in the

All-Ireland semi-final in February. They seem to have it every way, big, strong and powerful, pacey and plenty of skill. They have also proven that they are not overly dependent on Diarmuid Connolly who should have got “Player of the Year” for his consistent excellence at both club and county level.

sufficient time between training and matches for proper recovery. I have often come across students in my own school, C.B.S. Enniscorthy who train with several teams not just GAA and could pay several games a week, sometimes two games in the one day, a game with their school in the afternoon and another game or training with their sports club that night. Now, the experts say that it takes at least 72 hours to recover physically and psychologically from a competitive game, so the young player should be resting that night instead of training or playing another game, particularly if they have picked up a knock however small. Without question a lot of talented young players in Wexford have far too much on their plate and quite a few of them get burnt out and give up the game altogether. And then we wonder why some really talented young players never make the grade at senior level? In relation to burnout perhaps the GAA could look closely at rugby. Here they have a rule which states that if you are a member of the Schools Cup panel, junior or senior it does not matter, you are simply not allowed to play

for your club. The rationale for this decision is as follows: firstly, the powers that be in rugby are of the firm belief that their young players, at a very formative time in their lives, are getting more than enough rugby playing with their schools. Secondly, they believe, and generally rightly so, they are involved at a much higher standard with their school team than with their club team and that this experience should benefit their development as a player. Now, this rule should play a big role in preventing burnout and I really feel the GAA should have a close look at it. Of course the alternative would be to drastically reduce the amount of schools games (or at least have them on a knock-out basis) since they were brought in originally because there were so few games at club level and with so many boarding schools in times gone past students were not allowed out to play with their clubs. Now, of course, there are very few boarding schools and young people are training and playing with both their schools and clubs with apparently very little regulation on it. The result often is the “overtraining syndrome” which is a process that ends in burnout among

young players and, according to the experts, can often result in mental health problems as well as physical stress. According to the Irish Independent investigation quoted from earlier there is a staged process involved here: “Players involved in rigorous training regimes may first suffer from overreaching whereby they are not allowing enough recovery times. This is a common thing among top sports people, people playing a variety of games and even those who are only involved in one activity.” Professor Moyna is quoted as saying that “overreaching is the first stage and means the combined workload doesn’t allow for adequate recovery. The problem is the next phase which is overtraining, where you’re consistently overreaching and don’t get appropriate recovery. At that

point, you’re looking at a long spell on the sidelines” We should take this report very seriously in Wexford since we are such a dual GAA county and, indeed, a sports mad county generally. We owe it to our young players to have some serious joined up thinking among all the sports in the county in relation to the burnout issue. Player welfare must come first above all other issues. It must be about the long term development of the young person and not some coach seeking instant gratification, often just to boost his own ego. We will conclude with a damning statistic: Wexford has not won the Leinster minor championship in football since 1969 and in hurling since 1985. Based on the foregoing there is plenty of food for thought there!

Well Done Crossabeg –Ballymurn! It is indeed good for Wexford GAA to see Crossabeg-Ballymurn on the march again. Their latest success was the Roinn one under 21 football county title last Sunday week,

concluding a great year for them. They have some excellent young players that should see the club restored to senior ranks, perhaps in both codes, in the years to come.

South East regional bid for the European Capital of Culture 2020 The South East region is to bid to host the European Capital of Culture 2020. The bid will be lead by Wateford in partnership with Kilkenny and Wexford. A team from the three local authorities is being organised to bring together a wide range of stakeholders including the cultural sectors, tourism and educational bodies, local communities and public representatives to assist in developing a winning bid. Preparation of the bid will provide great social, economic and physical opportunities for the region on a long-term basis. The European Capital of Culture is designated by the European Union for a period of one calendar year during which the host city or region organises a series of cultural events with a strong European dimension. Preparing a

European Capital of Culture can be an opportunity for the region to help foster urban and rural regeneration, change the region’s image and raise its visibility and profile on an international scale. Explaining the unique nature of the regional approach, Michael Walsh, Chief Executive Officer, Waterford City and County Council said, “Hosting the European Capital of Culture can be transformational to the region and the best examples have delivered real success stories. While each individual county has its own personality and remarkable cultural stories to tell, the South East region as a whole has a rich mix of cultural organisations, a distinctive blend of contemporary and historic assets and a thriving artistic community. From

shared Viking and Norman histories to strengths in literature, music and crafts and a mixture of sports, agricultures and industries, the region has real strengths which will make it a strong candidate.” The region has a strong offering of year-round festivals including Spraoi, Kilkenny Arts Festival, Wexford Opera Festival, food festivals, as well as a host of year-round events celebrating the arts and literature. The South East has a richness and variety of heritage sites including Kilkenny Castle, the Irish National Heritage Park and the Dunbrody Heritage Ship while craft and culture enthusiasts flock to the Waterford Crystal Visitor Centre. The bid process is a oncein-a-generation opportunity to maximise the role of culture

in society and to fully engage in ensuring that the potential of the region is reached and value is added which lasts for many years to come. The European Capital of Culture process presents an opportunity to explore new regional identities which embrace very local cultures to generate a new, more outward looking and confident South East region for the future. Mr Tom Enright, Chief Executive Wexford County Council noted "The people of County Wexford have so much to be proud of. We have

wonderfully diverse cultural assets here in our County, spanning award-winning literary greats to the Festival Opera to young, high-end fashion designers and more; Wexford people and communities are contributing to a cultural agenda locally, nationally and internationally. The European Capital of

Culture presents an opportunity to recognise and harness this energy, working with our neighbours Waterford and Kilkenny to develop and raise the profile of the South-East region, ensuring we are known as a great place to live, work and visit.”
