Bishop’s plea for needy While there are indicators of growth and recovery emerging in the Irish economy, for the most needy this is not yet a reality, Bishop of Ferns, Dr. Denis Brennan declared in a letter read at all masses in the Diocese on Sunday last. Appealing for support for the annual St. Vincent de Paul collection which will be taken up next weekend, Bishop Brennan said many people right across County Wexford are living week to week with uncertainty and in serious need of help. Mindful as he is of the continued burdens that people in general are facing in this time of less

income and greater demands, Bishop Brennan is, nevertheless, confident his call for a generous response to the collection will bring the desired result. This particular collection, said Bishop Brennan, occupies a very special place in the annual calendar of the diocese and he asked for support for the efforts of the many volunteers who work so tirelessly on behalf of the needy and vulnerable in our communities. In his discussions with members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society here in County Wexford, Bishop Brennan said the clear message emerging is

that while there are indications of growth and recovery, for many this is not a reality and far too many are still living with uncertainty and anxiety about what the future holds. Bishop Brennan concluded his appear letter “may God bless those who give so generously to the St. Vincent de Paul, to its many volunteers and may our solidarity with those who have needs at this present time, remind us of our shared membership of Christ’s body and the one pilgrim path on which we all journey”.

Barntown looks back………..before moving forward Work on Barntown’s long awaited new primary school is nearing completion. It is expected that pupils will take up their positions in the impressive new building when they return to class in the New Tear. As part of the development the existing

school which has served the young people of Barntown for well over half a century will be demolished during the Christmas holidays. The old building is being taken down to make provision for a playing area for pupils attending the new school.

Barntown’s existing school has many happy memories for generations of locals who attended class there and on Sunday last its doors were opened to the public to allow former pupils and the people of the parish one last look at a facility which has serviced the community so well over the decades. There was a huge turnout as people of all ages travelled back to school to review old roll books, study photographs and sit in the desks they had occupied many years ago. The development of the new school has been necessary to cater for a rapidly expanding young population in the area

GER WALSH Time to give Enniscorthy a bit of publicity

How Chainless Joe was left red-faced without a wreath

They’re a bit annoyed in Enniscorthy, well the councillors are, or at least the Chairman is, that the town is not receiving the same coverage as Gorey in some of the local newspapers. Well it is not actually coverage of happenings in the town itself which is causing the problem, rather the lack of coverage of the proceedings of the local Municipal District Council meetings. Paid for newspapers devote a fair bit of space to local authority meetings but it seems coverage of Enniscorthy is being swamped by the activities of Gorey, at least according to Barbara Ann Murphy. She seemed to partly exempt the local journalists from blame by hitting out at the editors who made decisions on these matters and

They’ll remember this year’s Remembrance Day Ceremony in Gorey for perhaps not the best of reasons. At least that’s the case for members of the local Municipal District Council. The Council attends this ceremony in an official capacity each year. This, of course was the first time that the recently created Municipal District Council had the job of representing the public at the event. The Chairman John Hegarty was not available to attend so Vice Chair Joe Sullivan went in his place. The problem was Joe had no

she has even suggested that perhaps the Council would have to issue its own reports of meetings if things didn’t improve. Paddy Kavanagh wondered if Gorey got more headlines simply because the members in Enniscorthy were so well behaved with no rows. So just in case it slips the mind of some of the other titles I thought I’d give a little space to Barbara Anne’s views in my own column this week. The thing I thought most intriguing was that people have seemingly being coming up to Barbara Ann and commenting on the lack of coverage of the Enniscorthy Council in the papers. Haven’t they little to do! Well I can assure readers that Cllr. Murphy is a very active public representative and rarely misses an

opportunity to ensure the problems of Bunclody are highlighted and she is also very busy representing the people of the district at all sorts of events and functions. I can say that with certainly because each month she provides a detailed list of where she has been for the previous four weeks. So I know for a fact that she had dinner with Michael Sills, the Chairman of the London Wexford Association Dinner in White’s Hotel, Wexford on September 18th. Seven days later she attedned a meeting of Enniscorthy Tourism in the Millrace Bunclody and the following day she was in Bunclody Library presenting certs. October 2nd was a busy day. She launched a photographic exhibition in Bunclody, she met business people in Enniscorthy who

were concerned about breakins and then attended a PPN information evening in the Riverside. She attended the London Wexford Association Annual Buffet in London on October 21st while on October 28th she had both lunch and afternoon tea with Hollywood script writer Paul Guay in Enniscorthy. On November 2nd she attended the Wexford Festival Production of Silent Night with French Ambassador Jean Paul while two days later she sat down to dinner with Social Entrepreneur Sam Bishop. She also attended the Council’s Environment Awards in Hotel Ferrycarrig and met a deputation from Crosses Lane, Glasslacken, Bunclody, in the Presentation Centre. She is indeed a very busy lady.

Chains of Office so he didn’t exactly stand out as the Council’s representative. But there was worse to follow when it came to laying a wreath in memory of those who died in two World Wars. You see a bit of a mix up resulted in no wreath being purchased for Joe to do the honours. So it was a case of being without Chains and a Wreath at the ceremony By all accounts it will take Cllr. ’Sullivan a while to get over the embarrassment of it all and others are a bit red faced over the mix up as well. It will not happen again.

Council workers pulled out all the stops The jokes about local authority workers have been the stock and trade of comedians for years. You know the ones about road workers falling asleep on their shovels or being found dozing in a pot hole. Well, of course the reality of what Council workers do is far removed from the image which comedians paint of them and the people of Enniscorthy can bear testament to that. The recent floods in the town really brought out the best in the local authority itself and its staff at all levels. When you see the scale of what happened in the town on the 13/14 of November and the speed

with which it occurred you realise the magnificent work which all involved did in the circumstances. And the splendid reaction was not just confined to those who were out on the streets directing traffic and trying to protect homes and businesses but spare a

thought for those back in the office as well. At one point they were fielding one distressed caller every minute. Of course people are naturally upset that the

flooding occurred at all but it is quite an achievement for the Council and its staff to have nothing but praise uttered for their efforts. Some good may come of the flooding, however, following the revelation that OPW specialists were on the ground at the height of the waters taking measurements which will be used to ensure that whatever works are carried out in the town in the future will be sufficient to deal with the problem. The scenes which were broadcast across the country from Enniscorthy should also be a powerful tool for local representatives to use when pushing to get work on the flood relief job and new bridge underway.

It’s safer to stick to the pot-holes It was a case of biting off a little more than they bargained for in Gorey recently when members of the local Municipal District Council decided to stray a little out of their area if direct responsibility and express some views on the conflict in the Middle East. In October the Council decided to end all formal links between the town and Israel in view of the conflict in Gaza. That decision was taken by two votes to nil with five members abstaining. Well the decision unleashed an absolute barrage of insults,

threats and criticism directed at all the members, but particularly aimed at Fionntan O’Sulleabhain, who proposed it and Mary Farrell who seconded it. It was a visibly upset Cllr. Farrell who told colleagues of the death threats she had received when the issue was discussed again at the November meeting. It is likely that another round of e-mail attacks will be aimed at the members by their subsequent decision to

row back on the original motion by saying they would extend a welcome to all who supported human rights in the Middle East. Discussions about the state of rural roads never got them into this sort of trouble.

A terrible tragedy I could not let this edition pass without a word of sympathy to the Fenlon family and in particular to former councillor Anna on the tragic death of her husband John in a drowning accident in Wexford

Harbour. Anna has shown great courage over the years in battling illness and still managed to effectively serve the public as a, local councillor. The loss of her husband is another cruel

Budget agreement At a time when opinion polls are showing a huge level of volatility among the electorate it was remarkable that the Co. Council budget for 2014 should be passed unanimously by the thirty four member council, or at least by those who attended the meeting. Never before has there been so many left of centre members on the Council yet after almost a full day of discussion and debate the members didn’t change a thing which had been proposed by the Council Chief Executive, Tom Enright. There were comments on all sorts of issues but the councillors stopped short of really changing anything with the first hour of the meeting

being given over to an education on the process for new members. But it was clear that councillors of all levels of experience are still struggling to come to terms with the new structure of local government in the county and are unclear about how the whole thing will work going forward. And is seems that it could take some time before the members, new and old, fully understand the impact of decisions which they take with the early signs seeming to indicate that the new Municipal District Councils will really have very limited powers. They will be able to talk about a lot of issues at local Council level including

parking charges, school wardens and even school meals,, but when it comes to decisions it will all have to go back to Co. Hall. No doubt the members will continue to raise various issues as the year progresses but their scope for manoeuvre will be restricted both by the budget they themselves have adopted and the warning from the Chief Executive that 2015 will be a very challenging year for the newly amalgamated authority with the development of the role of the Municipal Districts, progressing the local government reform programme and developing the economic agenda amongst the primary objectives for the coming year

I anticipate a very competitive tournament with no easy bouts. You can rest assured every boxer will be out to win his particular contest”. The most promising boxer on the night, as decided upon by the judges, will be presented with the inaugural “Liam Walsh Memorial Trophy” which Billy says “will be a proud and nostalgic moment for all the Walsh family.” A limited number of

Wexford gets cash for social housing Cllr. Malcolm Byrne, Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, has welcomed the announcement of a new National Housing Strategy by the Government but stated that there is limited detail in the document and the real test will be the availability of resources to ensure that the County Council can address the County's social housing need. He pointed out that the Government has slashed funding for local authorities and that the County Council could only build two new housing units last year in the whole county. At present (27th November), there are 3,647 people on the Co. Wexford housing list. The Wexford district has the highest level of demand with 1,252 followed by Gorey with 864. Many have been waiting for years for suitable accommodation.

Next year, will see ten additional social housing units at Baile na Tra, Riverchapel and 8 at Shanna Court, Wexford. The Co. Council Chairman said "The need for social housing has never been greater and we need greater detail from the Government about its new strategy - what impact will it make on the ground?" He pointed out that the Council had several "shovel ready" projects to provide additional housing once funding was guaranteed. “The Council went ahead this year and secured planning permission for additional schemes in Gorey, Enniscorthy, Taghmon and Oylegate so that, in addition to the Riverchapel and Wexford schemes, if monies are made available, over fifty new properties

could be available in the County next year." "This area is a priority for the elected members and the staff of the Council and we had a detailed policy debate at the last Council meeting and will be doing so again at our December meeting." There has also been work done with voluntary housing associations in Coolcotts, Kilanerin and Rathangan to provide additional housing. Malcolm concluded, "The devil is in the detail here. The new National Strategy will not solve all the problems but if the government makes the resources available, Wexford County Council will be ready to provide the housing. That will at least be a start."

Gorey Table Quiz The Gorey branch of Conradh na Gaeilge will hold a fund raising table quiz as Gaeilge in the Loch Garman Arms on Friday the 5th December at 8:30. This is an ideal opportunity for people to participate in an event where Irish will be the main language on the night but where some English translation will also be provided. Even if your Irish is rusty, by

getting a group together you can pool both your general and Irish knowledge together and maybe even be the winners on the night ! Lots of seasonal prizes including a chance to win a Christmas turkey. Refreshments served. €20.00 per table of four. Only a few tickets remain for the John Spillane concert in Katie Daly's on the 11th December.

Tickets can be purchased in Katie Daly’s, Making Music or by calling 086 6063235. The usual Irish conversation meetings will continue in the 'Small Changes' café in St Michael's Place on Saturday from 10:30 - 1:00 and in the Bridge Bar on Tuesday evening from 7:30 pm. All levels are welcome. Fáilte roimh chách.

Kelly Bichard of The Secret Hair Artistry in Enniscorthy chats to Liz Doran of The Chronicle offering some hair advice and how it all started for her.. L: How long are you working with hair? K: I’ve been doing hair since I was 13 and I did it on Saturdays and on holidays and I started my qualification when I was 18 and finished when I was 21 and 34 now so that is 13 years qualified. L: 5 years in between too Kelly so that’s a lot of experience in the Hair industry. K: Yes it sure is. L: Have you always had a passion for hair? How did it all start? Especially at 13? K: Well it was through school work experience for two weeks and the lady took me on and it started from there really.

colour is my most favourite. L: And I suppose, like any project, it’s the end result that you get the most satisfaction from. K: Yes I love when someone has a complete change, when they come in and you get to completely change how they look. L: The salon looks great and you’re very busy, I see that there from your Facebook updates. There are lots of new techniques in hair dressing now a days, isn’t there? K: There’s loads of new techniques, yeah. The biggest thing at the moment and carried forward from the summer through the winter is Balayage and free hand painting colour. So rather than full head colours or highlights we can now use softer hews of colours going through the hair. L: So you have more freedom for the customer then

the moment so curls with little plaits going through them that would be the height of fashion at the moment. We are gonna have an offer in December on Sparkle Blowdry. L: Sparkle Blowdry? Tell me more? K: It’s a high shine glossing treatment and it lasts for up to six weeks in your hair. It makes your hair really, really shiny and then you get your blowdry after. It’s really good for blondes as they find it hard to get a shine in their hair anyway and it makes it nice and soft too. Great for brunettes too but blondes would get a great finish from it. L: So it’s all about plaits and curls this year and Sparkle Blowdrys! And there is a mix in up and down styles now? K: Yes a big mix nowadays in styles up and down L: I remember getting upstyles years ago and taking a million pins out of my hair before bed, hard achievement at whatever time in the morning so down would be my choice now. K: Styles are a lot more tosselled and looser now, it’s not so stressed looking. You have loose plaits and fishtail plaits.

L: That’s not an Irish accent I’m hearing Kelly K: (she giggles) L: So how long are you living over here in Ireland then? K: I’m living in Ireland for almost a year now, end of January last year I came over L: Oh wow really? What Tara Donovan, Kelly Bichard propriator and Emma O'L: And the made the last question change? Was it Toole at your service in The Secret Hair Artistry Kelly on a final an Irish Man note. I’m an now who really. They can have pink on 80’s girl, tell me this, did brought you over here or what the right and purple on the left Perms go out with the 80’s? was the story? type thing! Are they still around? Are K: It was an Irish Man! K: You do, you can do they gone? L: The devil (both giggling anything you want really, K: (giggles) Yes they are, away) anything goes! It’s really gone with the 80’s. K: I met an Irish Man in good! Everything is much more Australia believe it or not. L: And I see now a thing about colour and style Went to work over there for a called foiling now to curl hair nowadays. Now there are the year and met an Irish Man is that right? odd one or two that are done over there and we came over K: Yes, you can use tin foil but its one in a million really. here and that was it end of the curls and the effect is amazing L: I suppose it was such a story really. Came home from it too. You cover the hair permanent fixture too that you together then. in foil and use a straightening had to live with for so long L: Awww, that’s so cute. iron to heat it and wait for it to nowadays you have the choice K: I know! (both giggling cool down and you get these of having temporary curls. still) amazing curls. And it’s a K: That’s right. So things L: So you’re happy where different curl too, different like GHD’s and wands give you are now, that’s the main effect. more freedom of choice. If thing. you have a perm in your hair K: Exactly, happy as Larry, L: So Christmas party it’s much harder to straighten love it! season is on the way so every that out than it is to with a woman is going to be looking wand style from the weekend L: So what’s your favourite to doing something with their ya know?! With a perm it thing to do? Is it colour, hair. What do you suggest? doesn’t look as natural either. cutting? Upstlyes? Curls? Plaits? No matter how big or small the K: Yeah I love to do Should they consider the roller is it will still look like a everything but my favourite, whole ensemble or something? perm, not as natural looking as favourite is colour but I do K: Yes the whole ensemble. foiling, irons or wands. love weddings and upstyles as Plaits are really in fashion at well. Introduction

Hi everybody! With the town starting to get busy over Christmas, A&E have decided that over the next few weeks, we’ll be out and about at the weekends asking people questions and doing some short interviews, so if you happen to be in town, call over. We’ve had loads of bookings over the last few weeks which are always handy around Christmas and a few bits of charity work that we’re always happy to help out with. We received a few cancellations coming into December and January too, so if you’re looking to book us on short notice, we could be free! Other than that, all’s well!

names, or pointing. You’d be surprised how tough this one can be. • Pub 3: No holding your own drink – straws not allowed. Basically, you’ll partner up and have a friend pour you your drink and vice versa. • Pub 4: You can only speak ás gaeilge! “Tá pint of Budweiser misé.” Pub 5: No toilet • break. After 5 drinks, this one’s tougher than it sounds! • Pub 6: Everyone must sit on the floor drinking their pint. Try pick a more lenient pub for this one. Apparently some pubs don’t like you using their floor as a chair.. Go figure! • Pub 7: Pick a friend’s drink. Again, partner up and you get to pick what your friend drinks and vice versa! • Pub 8: No swearing. After 8 drinks, it’s near

impossible for a full group (minus the few who haven’t made it this far) to go 20 minutes without swearing. • Pub 9: Crawl to the pub. This one is more for the onlookers. Seeing a group of people drunk wearing Christmas onesies trying to crawl is surprisingly entertaining! • Pub 10: Kudos, if you’ve made it this far as a group! For this one, everyone must have their drink in the toilets. • Pub 11: Realistically, no one abides by the rules at this point. Anyways, it still needs a rule! Refer to the barman as Guinness. “Pint of Budweiser, please, Guinness.” Pub 12/Nightclub: • We normally finish up the 12 pubs in with a nightclub, it’s up to you! If you’ve made it this far, there’s no rules. Just enjoy a drink…or a glass of water!

USELESS FACT OF THE WEEK

Black Friday MAYHEM Black Friday for those have you who don't know what it is, is basically the beginning of the sales in America and happens the day after thanksgiving, a day America celebrates being thankful for the year they have had. In Ireland both are pretty unheard of well until this year a few UK & Irish shops decided to pull a marketing stunt and have a Black Friday. Mainly in the UK now but Black Friday hasn't gone to plan for some shoppers looking for bargains. Videos have been posted up all over social media of men and women fighting, grabbing and pulling each other in shops to grab the Christmas essentials this year. Last week Ireland witnessed similar drama as one mother knocked an-

So, December has started, which means the plans for the annual 12 pubs of Christmas should already be in place. If not, get your life together! For those of you who aren’t familiar with the concept, here’s how it goes: a group gets together (preferably dressed in their finest Christmas attire) and takes on the challenge of the “12 pubs”! The aim is to have 1 drink in each pub and move on to the next one (preferably still as a group). Roughly 20 minutes should be spent per pub. Each pub has a different rule, if you break that rule, the punishment is to buy yourself another drink/shot. Here are a few rules we used last year that turned out sort of okay: • Pub 1: It’s recommended just to take it easy on this one. No rules, just enjoy a drink. Pub 2: No first •

markets in England as a surge of people are fighting over cost cut goods such as TV's and other electronics. All this reminds me of a David Attenborough documentary I once saw, wild animals fighting over water in the watering hole, this is an exact replica only that they are humans in the first world fighting over special offers. I can't help to imagine what the rest of the world think about England mainly after watching the videos. People in 3rd world countries can't get a sip of water and there's the British, some Irish and Americans fighting over TV's ect ... Get a grip, I hope this isn't going to be a yearly thing as it's absolutely ridiculous. - Eoin

News Political Notebook

Thoughts turn towards election Whatever way you look at it the countdown is now well and truly on to the next general election with, at the very most, fifteen months to go before the posters start appearing and the knocks on doors begin in search of votes. The government parties will be hoping that they can finally put the water charges mess behind them following the recent changes in the charging structure. If they fail on that score there is a great danger that many of their TDs will be washed away in a tide of public anger come election day. There is obviously a great deal of anxiety among all sitting TDs as the opinion polls suggest a major drift away from the traditional parties with an amazing rise in support for independents. The reality on polling

day, or even as polling days gets a little closer, may be somewhat different of course. Then people will be focused on a potential government for the next term and will have to consider the colour and shape of the government they want. This is likely to see some movement back towards the traditional parties as the election nears and they are not likely to do as badly in the actual poll as the opinion samplers are currently suggesting. However, there is no certainly about that. But it does seem unlikely, for example, that Sinn Fein will get more votes in the general election than Fine Gael as suggested by a recent poll. But if the findings of the polls were repeated in the election what effect would

it have on politics in Wexford? A shocking effect is the answer. It would cause a complete change in the political landscape in the county with the main parties reduced to minority status. If the kind of numbers showing in the polls were repeated here then two independent candidates would be returned with Mick Wallace’s seat very safe indeed despite the semi -detached nature of the representation which he provides for the county. Sinn Fein too would be heading for a Dail seat with a little bit to spare. There would only be one seat for Fine Gael, one for Fianna Fail and none for Labour. But that is just taking the national polls and laying them on the Wexford numbers. That, of course, will not happen.

The strength, for example, of Brendan Howlin’s personal vote would ensure that he comes in well ahead of Labour’s national figure while Fine Gael too would be hoping that the strength of their team would leave them knocking at the door to hold their two outgoing seats. However, if the opinion polls continue with these numbers into next year there will be a lot of nervousness among the county’s TDs because they will realise that regardless of their standing locally or the amount of work they have done on the ground, it is very difficult to beat a trend. Apart from Wallace, at the moment no other Wexford TD would be assured of re-election on the basis of the current polls.

Sport Gaelic Football Roundabout

Ladies light up disappointing year on Inter County scene Wexford did not have a great year at inter-county level with our senior footballers just avoiding relegation to Division four by beating Longford in their last league game in April. In many ways this was a morale boosting win and it served them well when they went up to Longford to play the same opposition in the championship, a couple of months later. It is never easy to come away from Pearse Park with a win, particularly in the championship, as teams like Mayo and Derry have found to their cost in recent years, so it was very encouraging to get a win up there. It was Dublin next in Croke Park, and the Metropolitans proved far too good for us, though one good memory from the game is a superb goal scored by Daithi Waters on Stephen Cluxton. We drew Laois in the qualifiers at Wexford Park and this was a game we were desperately unlucky to lose. There were some very strange refereeing decisions most of them going against Wexford and to add insult to injury the referee only played one minute of injury time at the end of the game when at least three were absolutely warranted. For a group of dedicated players who had basically put their lives on hold to represent their county in the proper manner, this is just completely unacceptable and our county board should ensure that it never happens again. Manager Aidan O’Brien subsequently stepped down from his position, but it has to be acknowledged that he did a fine

job in difficult circumstances as the team is very much in transition and he introduced a lot of young players which was probably long overdue. Of course the loss of stalwarts such as Red Barry, David Murphy, Andreas Doyle and Anthony Masterson was keenly felt as such quality players are not replaced overnight. And of course one sincerely hopes that Daithi Waters is not completely lost to the hurlers, as a Wexford football team without the St Martin’s colossus would not be the same team at all. Daithi is held in very high esteem outside the county and when talking to Longford’s Paul Barden at the launch of Eugene McGee’s book in Croke Park recently, he stated that he considered him a very under-rated footballer and one of the best around. One of the many challenges facing new manager David Power, to whom we wish the very best of luck, is to find a regular partner for Daithi that would take some of the pressure off him. At underage level our under 21 footballers had a disappointing exit when losing rather easily to Offaly in the championship at Taghmon. They played second fiddle to a superb Offaly team that I thought would go a long way in

the competition. The Faithful county actually beat Kildare away in the quarter final before losing to Meath on a windy night in the semi final. From a Wexford perspective the panel of players was far from being the best available and their cause was certainly not helped by a number of key dual players not being available. Our county minor footballers had a great win up in Louth in the first round of the championship but lost to Louth at the quarter final stage in Wexford Park. They played some really good football in this game and will wonder how

they did not manage to win the game. They missed some fairly straightforward frees towards the end of the game that had they been converted would probably have resulted in victory and it was a shame that they did not progress further. Nevertheless progress is being made in this grade under the shrewd stewardship of Kerry man Pat O’Rourke. Our lady footballers finally made the breakthrough by beating New York in the All-Ireland Final at Croke Park in September and after the many years of heartbreak it was great to finally see them do it. They were deserving winners

but they had to thank goalkeeper Mary Rose Kelly who made some brilliant saves particularly towards the end of the game. They now move up to the Intermediate grade and will feel confident enough that they can acquit themselves well having held their own against many of these sides in this year’s national football league. It was a surprise to hear that Billy Donnelly has stepped down as manager, as the Shelmaliers man had put in a huge effort with the team and had finally reached the holy grail, but then again managing an inter county team is a huge commitment nowadays.

We can learn from International Rules I thoroughly enjoyed the International Rules game between Ireland and Australia last Saturday and it was great to see the Aussies fielding a full strength team. The one thing that really impressed me about them was that their hand movements were so fast; they were able to flick the ball away to a supporting teammate in the blink of an eye. I believe it is something that we should work a lot more on in our game as it would speed up and probably lead to a lot less bunching. I think that kickouts having to go to at least the 45 metre line is something else we could introduce as it would cut out a lot of sort hand passes and lead to more 50-50 contests for the ball which are becoming more and more rare nowadays as the game has become so possession based. Another remarkable feature of the game was that the Australians were far superior to us in kicking scores beating us 17 overs to 9, and this from a team used to playing with the oval ball, after only a few weeks practising with the round. I think there is a future for the International Rules provided the Australians maintain their seriousness towards the game and I’m sure Croke Park will be packed when they come here next year, but the Irish team will have to be a lot stronger as well as this was far from being the case in Perth last Saturday. Two full strength teams could produce a tremendous spectacle.

LARRY O’GORMAN

The man who gets Behind the Sports Headlines

My Wexford team of 2014 And so the year is nearly over (well for me it is anyway) the nights are long, the days short and very bloody cold and all we can do is look back on the sporting highlights of the year and forward to what might be in store in 2015. December is a great time of the year for looking back and there is no point in being the odd man out. Looking back on 2014 for

Wexford senior hurling, it was a great year for Shelmaliers. They were crowned senior hurling champions after a real battle with St Annes in the final and replay. As I have said on a few occasion before it was not a great year of hurling but when you see new winners such as the Shels it might just give other teams a boost to pull up their socks and drive on

for 2015. I certainly hope so. Now it’s time to pick my Wexford All Stars team from this year’s senior hurling. These are the players I think are the best in the county at the moment. To be honest it took me a while to select my best team but as many of you will no doubt say ‘Larry you wouldn’t pick your nose never mind pick a winner’.

So if you are not on the team I want to say ‘sorry’ now and if anyone isn’t happy don’t worry I will buy you a pint the next time we meet. So head down and here it goes: 1 Mark Fanning (Glynn) 2 Simon Donohue (Shels); 3 Keith Rossiter (Oulart); 4 Liam Ryan (Rapps); 5 Aiden Rochford (St Annes); 6 Clive Lawlor (Shels);7 Red Barry (St Annes) 8

Benny Jordan (Ferns) 9 Eoin Doyle (Shels) 10 Mossy Mahon (Rapps); 11 Diarmuid O’ Keeffe (St Annes); 12 Joe Coleman (St Martins) 13 Joe Kelly (Shels) 14 Paul Morris (Ferns) 15 Liam Og McGovern (St Annes). Selecting my player of the year was a tough one to call but I will give it to Joe Kelly of Shelmaliers. He helped them capture their first senior medal for the club in over 90 years.

What The Brother would wish for in his Christmas Cracker 1: An All-Ireland medal (I know I already have one) I mean for Wexford to win one (or fifteen) next with a bit of luck. 2: To find out that all the Kilkenny boys have retired, including Brian Cody. 4: I wish to win the euromillions and would pay for everyone’s water bill and pay off the Ferns development for the Wexford County Board. and then just relax with a lovely jameson whiskey with the brother
