Shortage of priests no threat to funerals in Ferns Claims that funerals and weddings would be ‘lumped together’ due to problems created by the shortage of priests have been dismissed by the Diocese of Ferns. Last week there were warnings that the country could witness scenes of up to ten coffins in a church for group funerals and there were also suggestions that individual church weddings could be a thing of the past. However, the Ferns Diocesan Press Officer, Fr. John Carroll, said funerals, weddings and baptisms were core events pastorally and it

was not envisaged that they would be lumped together. ‘There are fewer priests today and there are fewer students for the priesthood. At present we have three students and priests are also older, Ferns is joining the national picture, albeit later than in other places. Where there were two, now there is one, where four, now two etc. In places now a priest serves both the parish and the curacy’, said Fr. Carroll. But he said that fortunately for the Diocese of Ferns the pace of decline had not been as swift as in other areas.

‘What is emerging is the need for Parish Pastoral Councils where the mission would be undertaken by priest and people together. This is emerging slowly and we are learning from other places’, he added The position of permanent diaconate is also emerging, he revealed, and this may be a roadmap for the future because deacons can preach, baptise and have the tradition of burying the dead Fr. Carroll accepted that there was a clear shortage of priests and solutions, including a greater appeal to

men to consider it as a vocation, were needed. However, changes are already afoot with realignments and prioritisation of priestly pastoral responsibilities. In some other parts of the country churches have closed and several parishes have lost their priests, but Ferns has avoided any closures to date. The claims about the likely effect of the growing shortage of priests on funerals and weddings received widespread national publicity.

Lets Stop The Façade For the first time, I’ve decided to continue on from a previous column this week. My previous column was about suicide, mental illness, and bullying and I think these issues deserve to be discussed more in depth. Despite what the tone of these columns may have you believe, I’m not a humourless killjoy.

don’t sit around at home, and shake my fist at sunshine and children all day long. But I do honestly think that our current tendency, to be always wanting to be seen as the most witty, happy-go lucky, fun loving, successful, cheerful, craic having, people, all day, every day, in every year is

slowly killing us. Whether it’s out and about, in social media, or public discourse, there definitely a current trend towards “positivity”. But not genuine positivity, where you criticize what’s wrong and then attempt to work towards what right. Oh no, all people want to do now is engage in full on, maintain the status quo,

MARKAND GARDEN SHEDS

everything’s alright here jack, “problems? What problems?” Fingers in the ear while whistling loudly, nonsense. What most people call a “positive attitude” is really just wilful ignorance and complacency. Let me put it this way, your positive attitude isn’t really “positive”, if you have to deliberately remain in the dark about what’s going on in the world, just to maintain a state of happiness. How positive is a “don’t kill my vibe by challenging me” attitude, really? I’m not saying you should share your life story or psychological history with random strangers, if they so much as sit down beside you on the bus. I’m not pretending I’m some deep guy, who only wants to talk about “real issues”. I have my primitive, base, ignorant,

side, too, which I won’t go into detail about here as too many people I know read this. I’m just saying I feel there is a fundamental lack of honesty and balance, in how we communicate, online and off, and that’s how all the issues I talked about last week are festering in our society and not showing any sign of improving, because people don’t want to talk or do anything unpleasant for even one second, even if we might learn something from it. It’s a fundamental cowardice that we all fall prey to. When people are using the internet to reinforce their already held viewpoints, instead of trying to learn something new, you know the problem isn’t that the information isn’t out there, because it is, it’s that people are too lazy to access it. We all

have hard days, and sometimes you just want to do nothing and relax, which is a semi permanent occupation in my case, but reading occasionally won’t kill you. Trying to look on the bright side of something where that side is either non-existent or insignificant is not only misguided, it is both selfserving and ultimately useless. Try to be aware of what’s going on, and don’t try to ignore or overlook the truth just because it’s unpleasant or will put you in a bad mood. If you’re always going to ignore any signs of depression or bullying or mental illness around you as an “easy way out”, you can do that. Just don’t be surprised if someone in your community takes what they see as “the easy way out” and winds up dead.

High rates sinking county’s job prospects Business development and new jobs may be lost to Wexford due to the high cost of doing business in the county, it has emerged. Wexford’s commercial rates are the seventh highest in the country and when overseas industrialists visit Ireland with a view setting up plants in this country they may be turned off the county as a result. The cost of commercial rates has also emerged as a problem for local businesses and that has been recognised by the local authority with special incentive schemes for both Enniscorthy and parts of Wexford town aimed at filling

vacant properties. Now the County’s Chief Executive has acknowledged that Wexford’s high commercial rates may be a problem in terms of creating employment in the county and he has vowed to make lowering the level of commercial rates one of his top priorities. Tom Enright told councillors at a special meeting to discuss the local property tax last week that the issue would have to be examined to ensure that the county was more attractive for investors. Separately the issue of

equalisation of the commercial rates across the county will have to be addressed by councillors next month as part of their budget deliberations. Previously rates in the four towns were governed by the urban authorities but they will now all come under the Co. Council charge. The highest rates are in Gorey and the lowest in New Ross. Businesses in Gorey have been campaigning for a reduction in their rates to bring them closer to the New Ross level. However, Council officials favour bringing up the rate for traders in New Ross.

putting the value of their home in the €100,000/€150,000 range. Just under a quarter of people in the county live in houses valued at between €150,000 and €200,000, according to their own valuations. Views from Vinegar Hill Kehoe concerned over night time activities in Enniscorthy Enniscorthy is fast gaining a reputation as the sex trade capital of the county, Minister of State Paul Kehoe believes. His weekly clinics are inundated with complaints from constituents about late night activities in and around the Abbey Quay/Abbey Square area and he has called for an immediate investigation by both the Gardai and the recently elected Enniscorthy Municipal Authority. Minister Kehoe is asking for CCTV images to be downloaded and examined, saying that if what he is being told is true, a serious problem exists in Enniscorthy. He is very concerned about the extent of what is taking place and believes the Gardai and the Municipal Authority must

take immediate steps to protect the image of Enniscorthy which he feels is being tarnished by the late night activities of those behind the sex trade. Asked if he had been given specific details of what is allegedly taking place, Minister Kehoe said he was reluctant to into specifics but was, nevertheless, satisfied that the information given to him by numerous constituents merited an immediate investigation. He first received a complaint about five weeks ago but at the time thought the complainant was ‘over reacting’. Since then, however, he had received numerous other complaints from individuals and all had the same story to tell. When asked

what that story was, Minister Kehoe refused to go in to detail other than to say it involved activities of a ‘consenting adult nature’. Asked if he was referring to prostitutes, Minister Kehoe said the information given to him pointed in that direction but without having town centre CCTV images examined, he could not say for certain one way or the other. For that very reason, he added, he was writing to Superintendent William Carolan and the Chairperson of Enniscorthy’s Municipal Authority with a view to a joint meeting taking place in the hope of all the relevant facts being established. He was satisfied the areas of the alleged activities – Abbey

Square and Abbey Quay were well covered by CCTV cameras and he now wanted the images downloaded in order to prove or disprove what he was being told. Gardai across County Wexford have stepped up surveillance on suspected illegal activities involving young women in recent weeks and informed sources maintain a number of raids on houses have taken place in Wexford town, Gorey and New Ross. It is not yet known if prosecutions will follow as a result of the raids and it is not known either if houses of ill repute are at the centre of complaints made to Minister Kehoe

Tommy had been a trade union official with the old ITGWU for many years and the president of its replacement, SIPTU, Jack O’Connor, lead the representation from the Trade Union movement. The Chief Celebrant at the mass was Fr. Jim Fegan, who spoke of Tommy’s deep Christian faith and said that everyone who knew him had been enriched by the experience. He was a daily mass attender at the churches in town, Fr. Fegan commented. The eulogy was delivered bwexford chronicle1y Minister Brendan Howlin whose first memories of Tommy involved him

He highlighted the Film Commission which was responsible for bringing the filming of Saving Private Ryan to Wexford as one of his big achievements. At the end of the mass the Mayor and members of the Municipal District Council preceded the coffin from the church before Tommy was taken on his final journey to Crosstown cemetery, where he was laid to rest with his beloved wife Betty who predeceased him more than a decade ago.

New Enniscorthy houses will cost less than €200 per year to heat ECO friendliness and high BER ratings are very much in demand in new house builds at present but in Enniscorthy a new housing development has taken things a step further. Madeira Oaks, on the western approach to Enniscorthy, is the latest development from wellknown building contractor Michael Bennett and Sons, part of the Bennett Group of Companies, and is the first development in the town to achieve a fully certified passive construction certificate from the European Passiv Haus Institute in Ireland. The three-bedroom semi detached houses of which 12 are now on the market will cost less than €200 a year to heat including hot water requirements, according to Mr. Bennett who said interest in the new properties is considerable. The houses, many with distinctive individual features, were designed by MosArt Architects with each incorporating all the

comforts of modern living. The interior layout of the properties – which are selling for just €170,000 include a kitchen/dining room along the rear with of the house with a utility guest WC and separate sitting room to the front.Upstairs has three bedrooms, one en-suite and a family bathroom. Finished in red brick and plaster render, the pitched roofs may allow for further upward development in the future. How Annette’s doomsday scenario flattened councillors’ Property Tax plans It was an impressive presentation that Director of Services Annette O’Neill was responsible for at last week’s Co. Council meeting which had to consider what to do about the rate of property tax to be levied in the county for the next twelve months. Many of those sitting in the chamber had told anyone who would listen last April and May that they would push for the maximum possible reduction which effectively would have resulted in a 15% cut for householders. Some, like People Before Profit councillor, Deirdre Wadding, wanted to scrap the charge completely and she stayed true to her word. But Fianna Fail members, many of whom had been strong campaigners for a cut before the election, had a bit of a change of heart. Now they were now looking for any cut in 2015, but they wanted to put everyone on notice that they would be looking for a substantial

cut the following year. The FF team looked to be in a bit of disarray, at times not looking sure of what they would do about the Tax. A bit like a punch drunk boxer who had been flattened by the strength of Annette O’Neill’s arguments. And it was difficult to put up a case against what the Head of Finance was saying. You could cut the Property Tax all right but you couldn’t fill a pot hole, promote tourism in the county, help fund festivals or give a few bob to a community group to keep them going. And it got even worse. You could cut the Property Tax but then wouldn’t even be sure you could keep all the outdoor staff on the payroll on a full time basis, particularly during the winter. For many this was the clincher. Even Sinn Fein, who are among the highest profile campaigners against the Property Tax eased their approach in the face of Ms O’Neill’s doomsday scenario. They were not

longer pushing for a 15% cut in the tax for next year, but rather over the lifetime of the Council which was a significant softening of their position. Their case was put by the increasingly impressive newcomer to politics Oisin O’Connell who is increasingly being mentioned as a man with a big future on the political stage, not just in Wexford. Fine Gael members were full square behind the Director of Finance’s analysis with Paddy Kavanagh lamenting the fact that matching funds for important projects would be left in a drawer in Dublin because the Council was not in a position to increase the Property Tax. For Davy Hynes it was all three card trick. Poor Davy thought that the Property Tax cash, which he has always opposed, would come into the Council on top of the old local government fund which previously paid for Council services. Imagine

his shock when he discovered that LG fund was no more and without the Property Tax there would be no cash at all to keep things going For Deirdre Wadding it was all too much. They should go on strike and march on the government she declared before insisting that even the small savings involved in cutting the tax, which had been dismissed by others would be an important gesture and to find the money they could always cut their own expenses, she suggested. In the end Fianna Fail was forced to withdraw its double decked motion about no cut this year but a promise of one in 2016 in favour of a straight forward Fine Gael motion which proposed that the Tax remain unchanged for 2015. So for the 70% of people who live in houses worth less than €150,000 there will be no saving of 64 cent per week off their Property Tax Bill for next year.

When out cycling or walking, especially in rural areas, high visibility reflective clothing and lights are the only way to stay safe when out on the roads. - A vehicle has a greater chance of seeing you during dark winter days and nights if you wear something reflective and carry a torch. In turn cyclists should make sure their bikes are fitted with front and rear lights. - As children make the journey to school often in the dark, parents really need to make sure their child can be seen. If walking or cycling to school, especially in rural areas they need to wear reflective clothing. - If your child gets the bus to school, please make sure they wear reflective clothing so they can be seen at the bus stop. Don’t leave them standing on the side of the road in the dark to wait for a bus!

Postcards will be

Find it on: www.facebook.com/suicidepre ventionplan Pop Up Stall: we will have a pop-up stall on the street in a number of towns on the week of the 6th of October, where people can come have a chat and fill in a postcard. The stalls will be located as follows: o Wexford Town (Bull Ring): Wednesday the 8th of October, 11am to 3pm

o Enniscorthy (Market Square): Thursday the 9th of October, 11am to 3pm o Gorey: (Market House) Friday the 10th of October, 11am to 3pm An interagency group including representation from suicide prevention services, health services, youth services, social care services, welfare services, community services, the county council, sports organisations and many others are overseeing the development of the suicide prevention plan. The independent chair of the group is Kieran Donohoe of Ferns Diocesan Youth Service.

Mayor opens new quay front premises The Mayor of Wexford Councillor George Lawlor has offici8ally opened a new premises for well- known Wexford Auctioneer, Kearney & Co., who have recently moved from a first floor office in Redmond Square to a quay front location on Commercial Quay. The move is the first phase of the company’s strategy to further enhance its profile and visibility. In doing so, they have consequently enhanced the appearance of Wexford’s Commercial Quay, by adding new life to one of the quay front’s most prominent buildings that has remained vacant for some time. Husband and wife team, John and Sarah Kearney opened their property sales and letting business in Wexford in 2010, after 20 years of working in sales in Dublin and London. . “The past few years haven’t been the ideal time in which to establish and build a new business” admits John, “but we recognised a need for an auctioneer in Wexford with a fresh approach who hadn’t been caught

Mayor George Lawlor officially opening the new premises for Kearney & Co up in Celtic Tiger mayhem. Despite the challenges, we made it work and that is why Sarah and I are immensely proud that we are launching Kearney & Co. on Wexford’s Commercial Quay. Our move of office is the first step of our development plans. We are developing new roles within the business, expanding our team and further investing in technology and marketing.”

The process is being led by social research and development charity Quality Matters (www.qualitymatters.ie) “Suicide is an issue that has

had a significant impact on the lives of the people of Wexford. We have lost too many and need to do what we can do prevent more lives being lost.” said Kieran Donohoe, independent chair of the interagency group overseeing

the development plan. “It’s absolutely vital that the people on the ground, not just the professionals, have their voices heard on this issue”.

Opening the new premises Mayor George Lawlor , alluded to how the development of this company and resulting job creation, is indicative of the positivity that is beginning to occur in the property market in Wexford. A green ribbon was cut by the Mayor and the launch was attended by many members of the local business community and well-wishers.

Ideas for what to do in the garden early October The brilliant autumn weather is letting us get so much done in fine warm weather! But we have to remember the winter is around the corner and there are a few tips to help us prepare.. What should/could we be doing? Tidy up Rose beds now. Remove dead foliage and weeds first, and then spread a nice covering of well rotted farmyard manure which will enrich the ground and make for healthy roses next Spring. Remove weeds and grass

from around the base of trees by c 1 metre as they take the food from the tree and can harbour pests that attack the tree. Check tree ties are not too tight after the season’s growth. You don’t want ties cutting into the tree when it starts to grow again next year. Apply an autumn lawn feed now to ensure a good, green healthy lawn after the winter. Rake up all those leaves from the lawn, driveway etc – they will make leaf mould which is useful if you make

homemade compost. Add some GAROTTA if you want to speed up the compost making process. Any tender plants in pots? Now is the time to put them where they will be protected from frost. If the pots (or plants) cannot be moved remember to use some Frost Protection Fleece to wrap them up with. Raise clay pots off the ground slightly to avoid frost damage. If they can’t absorb moisture they are less likely to suffer in frost conditions.

GER WALSH Any chance of a How did the nuns recognise a masked George in his underpants? leg up to the Picture the image, Mayor of Wexford George Lawlor prancing around in just a string vest and underpants while wearing a mask. Well maybe you don’t want to think too long about it but that’s what George himself was talking about last week when he officially launched the programme for the fringe events of the Wexford Festival Opera. Usually at these events the speeches are suffered rather than enjoyed but great credit to George for delivering a really amusing and entertaining speech on the occasion which had a bit of the stand up comic about it while also covering the essentials of the task in hand. He had words of praise for those involved in producing the guide to the fringe which is

a wonderful booklet and a must have for all visitors to the festival. The Chamber of Commerce is the driving force behind the booklet and it is produced to a very high standard. But back to George in his underpants. Back in the day the First Citizen, well he wasn’t First Citizen then of course, was a member of the chorus at the festival and one of the operas involved all the male members of the chorus appearing on stage in the said string vests, underpants and masks. At the dress rehearsals, as is often the case on such occasions, the lads got a bit ahead of themselves and were not fully in tune with the orchestra causing the whole performance to be paused for a time leaving the chorus

Seanad, Enda? I was thinking I would write to Enda Kenny asking for his backing for a seat in the Seanad the next time a vacancy arises. I’d be well qualified for all the panels but maybe the Agriculture panel would be best. As a young lad I used to

Water Charges standing in a state of semi undress in front of a home grown audience. The thing was those on stage could hear members of the audience trying to identify the chorus members despite the fact that they were wearing

masks, including a couple of nuns pointing to ‘that Lawlor chap’. The question is: What is it that makes George so recognisable when he appears masked in just his underpants?

New Square good news for Enniscorthy By all accounts planning for the replacement of the second bridge in Enniscorthy is on track, at least that’s what we are told. It is shocking to think that a bridge built only two decades ago has to be replaced while the old existing bridge across the Slaney in the town remains as good as they day it was constructed. I’m not one for enquiries because they rarely shed much light on anything but surely there should be some sanction for those responsible for putting that new bridge across the Slaney in the early 1990s. For anyone who doesn’t know the problem is

that the bridge is too low and causes massive flooding in the town when the river reaches a certain level. The only good thing to emerge from this shambles is the fact that the new bridge is to be built down river completely from the existing bridge and the demolishion of the current structure will enable a square to be created in what was the old Abbey Square again. This should be very beneficial for Enniscorthy because it could be used as a venue for outdoor activities

which are a bit homeless at the moment. Every town needs a space to host outdoor events and the old Abbey

Square used to be a great place for outdoor entertainment during the Strawberry Fair and the like.

The Queen and her chewing gum Despite the improvement in unemployment figures there are still a lot of people out there looking for work so I thought I’d bring this particular position to the attention of readers, just in case anyone might be interested. There is a job going as a cleaner at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, that’s one of the Queen’s residences. They are looking for a person to work four hours per day for five days and for that you’ll get a salary of £16,000. But what really caught my eye was the list of duties.

They included making beds, cleaning the stars washing up and the usual things you’d expect as well as being able to work as part of a team. Fair enough. But you’d also be expected to pick gum off the floor and furniture. What on earth do these Royals get up to. Does the Queen herself or Prince Philip chew gum and then when no one is looking remove it from their mouths and stick it to the furniture? I don’t know, but anyway the full details of the job are on the Royal Website, just in case you want to apply.

walk across fields near my home so I am well acquainted with the land and that should be enough to put me well ahead of other likely contenders given what we know about the qualifications of current contenders.

Water charges are a reality now for everyone connected to a mains supply. Many people on group schemes in rural areas have been paying for water for years of course and they get very annoyed when that fact is not recognised. But from last week everyone who doesn’t have their own supply of water from a well on their own lands faces a charge. For most it is pay as you use but there are still hundreds of houses in the county which have not had metres connected and hey will have their charges accessed. When the first bills start to arrive next year expect to see a lot of anger from those people who are being

supplied with unsatisfactory water in their taps and where the water actually causes damage to electrical appliances I wouldn’t be surprised if the matter ends up in the courts.

We don’t want a repeat of old hospital at St. Senan’s I am really glad to see that a fuss continues to be kicked up over the future of the old St. Senan’s Hospital building in Enniscorthy. As we reported previously the HSE seems to have no real plan for the future of what is a very impressive building. The one thing which everyone is concerned about is that the site is going to be allowed to fall into the same state as the old hospital building in Wexford which quite frankly is not only a disgrace, but a costly disgrace at that because tens of thousands of euro have to be spent annually to keep it safe. It would not take long for a building like St. Senan’s to

go the same way, or at least to fall into a state that would require huge sums to be spent on it just to keep it safe, so time is of the essence here., The HSE is a bit clueless when it comes to running the health Service, which is its specialist area so waiting for that organisation to come with up ideas on the future use of the St. Senan’s building is a bit of a waste of time. The entire properly should be handed over to a combination of State agencies and the local community to develop as a facility for the good of all the people of Enniscorthy.

Gorey and North Wexford The strength of the business community in Gorey has always been its willingness to support local services and business. Gorey Chamber has over the years attempted to harness this with a series of programmes including its Build Your Business Network. Meeting on the first Friday of the month in Gorey Business Park, the network encourages each individual business to share information, experience and hopefully some business. Gorey Chamber provides this service free of charge with Chamber President Keith Groarke commenting “We are very keen to support business in the area and we find that our Build Your Business provides a focus for business on a regular basis. This level of cross business cooperation results in new contacts and extra business.” The lifeblood of business is to create extra footfall with a starting point of supporting local. The local community has been excellent at supporting local business over the years, but then Gorey and North Wexford has some of the best shopping,

retail, services and tourist attractions on the east coast offering all a great selection. In our endeavours to support local 2014 has seen Gorey Chamber develop the g voucher concept with close on 50 businesses participating. Body Tec How it works EMS stands for Electro Muscular Stimulation, it is a full body training exercise using impulse current. In everyday life our central nervous system constantly sends electrical impulses to control our muscle action. EMS uses this natural principle and is able to intensify this process to reach deeper muscle layers which are hard to activate through conventional training. This is achieved by applying EMS electrodes to the skin directly above the muscle.

Pricey Booze! I know we’ve done a few pieces about heading out in different places in Wexford and stuff and even ones on drink prices but this one will add on to them a bit, if that makes sense. I’ve only been moved up to Dublin a week or two, and of course, we’ve started heading out into town the odd night! It’s only when you come back to the big smoke, do you actually realise how much we have to pay for a drink in Wexford. Now, fair enough, you can go to Temple Bar and spend 7 or 8 euro a drink, but that’s your choice – there’s a million other places to go, so if you choose to go the most expensive place in town, don’t complain about it. What I’m talking about is the average price for drinks in Wexford. It’s just too expensive. There’s no point complaing that your bar is empty and keeping drinks at 5 and 6 euro. I went out in Dublin last Monday night, and ended up heading to one of the student nights. I went to the bar and ordered 4 drinks for myself and a few friends... I handed the barman a 10 euro note and got change from it. Nearly all drinks were 2 euro. You name it; bottles of Desperados, 2 euro. Pints of Budweiser, 2 euro. Vodka&Red Bull, 2 euro. I’ve spent close to 10 euro for a Vodka&Red Bull in Wexford. If it’s possible to do in Dublin, it can be done in Wexford and I think it would bring more people to the pubs so everyone would be a winner! To be fair, a few places in town have made an effort by introducing 3 euro drinks, it’s just a pity the rest havn’t followed suit. It’s madness to think bar owners would rather an empty pub than to reduce the mark-up on drink a bit, make more money overall and have a busy bar..! Time to call in Doctor Octopus & Green Goblin The eight -legged creatures that most people are petrified of are invading Ireland at the moment. I love spiders to be honest, so I think it’s brilliant. I got bit by one before which I guess that makes me spiderman….sort of! Anyway, people are going crazy at the moment with the amount of spiders lurking around. Why they’re afraid is beyond me, they are not going to attack and eat you ... they’re spiders, yes, there are types of spiders that are aggressive but they aren’t going to bite you if you don’t try drop kick them off a wall. The weather this summer has been a bit more humid, causing the little chaps to grow that bit bigger. And I hate to be the breaker of bad news, but they’re in the middle of mating season at the moment, so soon enough there’ll be baby spiders to join mammy and daddy crawling up your walls. So leave them be, and don’t be a bunny boiler. Inevitably, there’ll be webs around your house if you’ve found a few of the little fellows running around the place. Usually they won’t stray too far away from the babies, which should be around the web somewhere.

Chronicle October 8, 2014

they’re nothing to worry about, so relax! You can pick them up have the craic with them. Why not watch a film or go for a walk with them? They won’t do a thing once you don’t pose a threat … common sense really, isn’t it?

False Widow Spider Last but not least on my list is Ireland’s most feared spider. It’s, of course, the False Widow Spider, who are fairly new to Ireland but already have a badass reputation. These do have venom and they do bite but only if they feel in danger. So, to be fair, people’s fear is fairly justified. If you do try to attack them and miss they will latch on to you but only the females as she wants to protect her young. Again, they’re not at all aggressive if left alone and they haven’t killed anybody on record in Ireland, so just leave them be and you’ll be ok.

Cardinal Spider The largest spider in Ireland is the cardinal spider. These are the spiders everyone is seeing and freaking out about. These lads grow to around 14cm but have no venom and don’t even bite so why freak out about them?

Festival guide launched As a lover of spiders it was great fun doing research on them for this article and I hope I’ve put your minds at some rest when it comes to spiders gets bitten. As with everything, the media like to blow things out of proportion every time someone gets bit by a spider, but sure, what do you expect if you go around trying to kill them? Spiders!

House Spider The house spider is the most common spider found in homes in Ireland. Guess what? Their name has been changed to the “Giant House Spider” this year due to their size. Even still,

Wexford Chamber of Commerce has published an invaluable guide to the fringe events of Wexford Festival Opera once again this year. The Mayor of Wexford, George Lawlor, joined the President of the Chamber, Martin Doyle, for the launch in Greenacres. The Mayor praised the Chamber for what he described as a very

impressive and informative production. Martin Doyle said Wexford fringe had become an integral part not only of the cultural, tourism and entertainment scenes in and around Wexford but was also a real and tangible contributor to the economic and commercial life of the town. The guide includes full listings for a vast array of

events which are taking place in and around Wexford during the festival and also includes information on booking tickets and a map to help visitors navigate their way around. Fringe events actually begin on Friday October 17th, five days before the festival officially opens on Wednesday October 17th.

Big welcome for football ladies It was well after dark when the victorious ladies of the Wexford Junior Football team finally arrived in Wexford last Monday night. When they got off the coach to make their way to the big stage which had been erected on Wexford’s quay front it marked almost the end of one hell of a journey home. The previous day they had been victorious against New York to take the All Ireland crown and they were feted at every

crossroads as they made their way back into the county. The civic authorities in Gorey, Enniscorthy and Wexford had arranged formal receptions to welcome the players, but everywhere on the route small and not so small crowds gathered to salute the heroines. On Tuesday night they had yet another celebration when they travelled to New Ross to be honoured by the local Municipal District Council, but Wexford

marked the end of their journey on Monday. Mayor George Lawlor headed a group of local councillors on stage as they greeted the players who were then introduced on an individual basis to the cheering crowds. There truly was a great atmosphere on the quays as the crowd celebrated the achievement of the girls with everyone in great form and plenty of entertainment to add to the good mood. LARRY O’GORMAN

Senior quarter-finals down for decision this weekend

We can look back on a year we won many new admirers The local hurling season may be reaching its climax but nationally it’s all over. Kilkenny have the silverware again so it seems as if nothing has really changed. Well I’d say this: Kilkenny may have the Cup but at the end of this great hurling season, and it was really good with some great games, Wexford have a lot more admirers than they had at the start of it and people are beginning to take notice of the purple and gold again. Kilkenny were crowned All-

Ireland Champions and a well deserved victory it was after a titanic battle with Tipperary in the replay. But as I said we enjoyed a great year of top class hurling not only from the big boys but also from Limerick, Cork, Galway -and of course the boys of Wexford. They mightn't have won anything but they put belief back in the game in the county. not only in themselves but also in the supporters. We will go away with great memories of the year gone by especially

the games with Clare and Waterford where no one gave them any chance of winning but you have to take your hat off and say well done boys you proved to a lot of doubters that you can match up with the best at times. We all know we haven't won any silverware but we did manage to get respect from a lot of people outside of Wexford. With the under 21s also reaching this year’s AllIreland the future looks bright for hurling and if we can build

on what was achieved this year things could get really exciting in 2015. So well done boys and The Brother for one is already looking forward to next year. But hats off to Kilkenny they are deserving champions for 2014 and well done to Henry Shefflin on winning his tenth All-Ireland medal . What an achievement for any player and he certainly deserves being recognised as one of the greatest hurlers of all time..

New faces in local final In the local senior hurling semi finals as expected St Anne's overcame a determined Glynn Barntown team with four points to spare in the end. The game itself was close all the way through with both teams giving it their all. You knew from the throw in both beleived that they could win this game. Even though St Anne's were everyone’s favorites the Glynn boys themselves had other ideas and thought that they would take the Anne's by surprise but they knew it would take a big effort to win this battle and they did

give a great effort throughout the game l. With minutes remaining the game was level but St Anne's put the pressure on Glynn and with minutes to go Liam Og broke through the Glynn defence and rattled the net after a great pass from Red Barry. St Anne's added on one more point to win by four in the end. . The second semi final was also a close game between the Shels and Ferns. Almost everyone fancied Ferns to win this encounter but to be honest on the day the Shels boys

wanted it more.. Even though the game was close you could see that the Shelmaliers were up for it that little bit more than Ferns. Everyone in the Park including myself thought that Ferns would see their way through in the end but you have to say the Shels battled all the way through and with a never say die attitude got themselves over the line.. Final score st Anne's : 2- 09 V Glynn barntown 0-11 Shelmaliers 1-11 : V ferns. 0-11. Overall the hurling itself wasn’t breathtaking and the

standard was below par. .But you could understand the pressure on all teams that were involved and it was clear they were all very nervous and found it difficult to express themselves.. Reaching a final was all a big step for all.of them. Now that we have two new teams in the final it should be an exciting time ahead for both clubs. We will have new winners this year and that can only be good for hurling in Wexford.

Well done ladies Money talks Well l done to the Lady Footballers on a great win was delighted to see them getting such a great welcome home because sometimes I

don’t think they get the recognition they deserve but The Brother was cheering very loudly for you.

Great to see United back to winning ways again. Who said money doesn’t talk. I think they are starting to

prove that in the Premier League at any rate it does.

The action starts in Bellefield next Friday night when Castletown meet St Martin’s at 8.30 pm. The north county team have probably been the more impressive to date but the holders will not relinquish their crown easily, especially if Daithi Waters is fit to take his place. Castletown have reinvented themselves this year with a refreshing brand of football. They suffered a serious blow a couple of months ago when Conor Carty did his cruciate, but have recovered well in the meantime. I believe this game is going to hinge on the availability of our foremost inter-county midfielder. If he plays and is fully fit the Piercestown men get the vote but it could be close with extra time being possibly needed to decide the issue. The action moves to the following day, Saturday, with the remaining games down for decision. There is a double-header at Grantstown with Horeswood and Gusserane up at 3 pm while the two saints, Annes’s and Fintan’s, clash at 4.30 pm. The former is really a local derby and current form can sometimes go out the window. This game is going to be close with P.J. Banville and Adrian Flynn back to strengthen their respective sides. Both sides have forward lines capable of racking up big scores on their day but Gusserane may have the edge in the middle of the field and that could be decisive. The Ballycullane men are taken to advance but only just and a Horeswood victory would not surprise me. The battle of the Saints follows with the Anne’s variety taken to advance here perhaps with a little bit to spare. St Fintan’s have probably achieved their objectives for this year by staying senior and qualifying for a quarter final and they would probably now consider themselves to be in bonus territory. Nevertheless they are a club with great fighting spirit and cannot be discounted but they will certainly

miss their talented forward Donal Shanley who has gone to study in America. His free taking prowess alone will be badly missed by the south county men. St Anne’s are a formidable team and when they comprehensively outplayed Castletown in the 2012 county final it looked like they would dominate for a couple of years at least. I believe they took their eye off the ball last year and will now be very keen to atone. I take them to win this game fairly comfortably, but I believe their chances of going the full way have taken a real blow as a result of the injury suffered by the long serving and influential David Fogarty in last Sunday’s hurling semi final, an injury that may keep him out for a long time. We wish David a speedy recovery. Of course St Anne’s were the last team to do the double back in 2000 when both championships were knock-out so that possibility cannot be ruled out either. But if they do manage to pull off the double it would rank as a greater achievement than the 2000 one as they would have to play 16 games as distinct from 8 when they won it then. We return to Wexford Park for the final quarter final on Saturday at 3 pm when Shelmaliers and Sarsfields lock horns, another local derby. On all known form the Shels should win this game as they have been the more impressive side so far and have genuine strength in depth. The town team though have a number of quality players in their ranks and although they struggled to beat 13 man Kilanerin in the quarter final they still remained patient enough to get the necessary scores at the end. The over the water men already have silverware on the board, having defeated Adamstown by a narrow margin in the league final and they are taken to advance a stage further here but it could be closer than people think.
