Cancer scare sparks recall for patients at hospital Concerns over the quality of colonoscopies carried out at Wexford General Hospital have led to hundreds of people who underwent the procedure in the hospital being recalled for a repeat examination. The matter came to light after the BowelScreen programme raised concerns about the quality of procedures undertaken on its behalf in Wexford General. This followed two incidents where patients who previously had screening colonoscopies carried out at the hospital as part of the programme subsequently were found to have interval cancers.

This is where cancer is diagnosed between screening examinations. The colonoscopies were carried out in 2013 and 2014 and involved a total of one hundred and eighteen patients who have been recalled to have the procedure undertaken again. But the concerns raised by BowelScreen have led to concerns in relation to the quality of all colonoscopies carried out at the hospital and an additional one hundred and sixty three patients who previously underwent a diagnostic colonoscopy are also being recalled for a repeat procedure.

Diagnostic colonoscopies are those requested by a patient’s GP to investigate gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain or bleeding. Screening colonoscopies are carried out on people aged 60-69 who have had a positive home test as part of the HSE’s BowelScreen programme. In a statement at the weekend the HSE said medical teams who reviewed patients’ files found that in some cases it was not clear that the very end of the colon (bowel) was examined during the procedure ‘due to a lack of clear photographic evidence’.

The HSE added that as a precautionary measure the medical teams recommended the recall of all one hundred and eighteen patients who previously underwent a screening colonoscopy for a repeat procedure. Many of those due for recall have already had the repeat procedure carried out while dozens more are due to be seen this week. The incident has caused alarm and concern for many of those who have faced a recall and their families but Ken Mealy, consultant surgeon at the hospital, said the process was precautionary and the risk to patients was low.

Double tragedy for close-knit community The close knit communities of Oulart and The Ballagh were left reeling after two tragic deaths in quick succession. 14 year-old Conor Byrne lost his life in a collision between a car and a tractor near Ballytarsna on February 18, while last week a 33 yearold mother of one died suddenly at her home at The Sawdust Inn in the Ballagh. There was a massive outpouring of grief at the loss of such a young life as Conor Byrne’s funeral service took place at St Patrick’s Church, Oulart. A popular young man

and a talented hurler, Conor had captained his Oulart/The Ballagh side and had just been recruited by the Wexford u15 mentors and was looking forward to representing his county for the first time. A large number of Conor’s friends and school mates were present at the service and many wore their St Mary’s CBS uniform. Grief stricken mother, Angela Byrne, addressed the congregation saying: ‘My handsome, smart, kind boy has gone.’ Conor will be sadly missed by his parents Angela and

His wife Marie-Pascale was away in France at the time of the incident. He is also survived by his son Nathan (14), daughter Vanessa (11), mother Violet, brother William, brother in law Dominique, mother in law, father in law, cousins, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends. The man managed to take a purse, which contained a small sum of cash, from the customer and cleared out the notes from the till before fleeing the scene on foot towards Esmonde Street. Nobody was hurt in the course of the incident, however, the staff members and the customer were understandably left extremely shaken by the incident. Gardaí are now calling on anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious in the area or who may have any information at all regarding the robbery to contact them at Gorey Garda Station on 053 9430690.

News Work begins on T.K. Maxx Shoppers in Wexford were left rejoicing this week as work finally got underway on the new T.K. Maxx store at the Stonebridge retail unit on Wexford’s quay front. The chain had planned to open the Wexford store towards the end of last year, but

an objection to An Bord Plenála by Wexford businessman Nigel Hamilton set the project back by a few months. Around 40 jobs are expected to be created when the store opens, however, a lot of these positions are said to have been filled already. It is hoped that the

discount retailers will breath new life into the south end of the town and bring shoppers from neighbouring towns and surrounding areas. While work is now underway on the development, T.K. Maxx have refused to be drawn on when they expect to open.

Browne attacks bus cuts Councillor James Browne has called for an end to what he described as the ongoing segregation of rural communities from urban centres and necessary vital services. He said that the recent announcement of bus route closures which will result in the loss of bus routes from Clonroche and Bunclody was just another example of a deliberate process of isolation and segregation of rural communities. Cllr Browne stated that many people depend on these bus services to get to work, to hospital appointments, to see their families and to access vital services that have been lost locally. He has called on the National Transport Authority, which is the governing body in Ireland for public transport in Ireland, to step in and prevent the closures. Councillor

Browne will be part of a Fianna Fail delegation, being led by John Browne TD, that will meet with the NTA this

Wednesday in an attempt to have the NTA prevent Bus Eireann from closing the routes.

The WORD on the Street Are more Gardai needed in Gorey’s ‘corner shop’ station? At a recent meeting of Gorey Municipal District Council the local Garda Station was described as a ‘corner shop’ Garda facility with the ‘supermarket’ Station located in Enniscorthy. The perceived downgrading of policing in North Wexford is a matter of serious concern for local councillors. And it’s not just Gorey town where there is a problem. Malcolm Byrne told the same meeting that if the Gorey Station was a ‘corner shop’ the Courtown station was a ‘pop up shop’

The first meeting of the new Joint Policing Committee for the county will take place next week and Councillor Joe Sullivan, himself a former Garda will raise the concerns of North Wexford on behalf of the local Municipal District Council. However, he does not expect to make much progress on the matter. But what is the view on the streets about policing in Gorey and North Wexford. Luke Kennedy took to the streets of Gorey to get the views of the public.

Kathy Lee “I know where the gardai station is, but I think it would be nice to see more community policemen on the street, I think it would be nice to see a presence of gardai up and down the town. “

Eleanor Griffith: “Certainly not. There has been different houses broken into. There’s been different issues in the estate we live in. Sometimes, you can get the gardai no problem, but there’s other times you can wait hours and hours before you get a guard. And in Gorey itself, there’s definitely not enough gardai. “

Jim Kirwan “I would say generally not, but being realistic, I suppose you have to be aware of cutbacks, I know cutbacks have affected the gardai fairly seriously in recent years, I know some people who left the service just because of that, but generally I would have to say no, particularly late at night I think there’s not enough of a presence on the streets.”

Irene Fitzgerald “No, I don’t think there are nearly enough Gardai in Gorey. You never see them walking the street and you don’t see many police cars about. I think years ago there were far more police about, you would see them on the street every day”

NWSPCA Report What an amazing week for the North Wexford SPCA with numerous cats and dogs finding new homes. Canine pupils Bert, Ernie, Lucky, Lola, Paddy, Hazle and Rufus all joined their new human families this week. Skip, Jake, Boamer, Scruff and Tilly went to our friends at the Dublin SPCA. their new humans too. Olaf is far from "frozen", but nice and toasty in his igloo in the new NWSPCA cattery. He simply knows how to keep cozy whilst waiting for his forever home. Olaf is a sweet, playful kitten who loves company and will keep you thoroughly entertained with his antics. Joe is a Terrier cross dog. He is quite a sturdy, little dog who just loves his walks. Joe currently has his residence in the NWSPCA centre, but hopes to move in with his future family soon. The North Wexford SPCA is always on the lookout for new volunteers to help in

Edwin Nolan: “No, there’s not enough gardai presence in Gorey, and you don’t see enough guards out walking on the street, having a presence. And it must be six months since I seen a guard walking on the street”

Joe the kennels or cattery. If you can spare even only 1 hour, please make contact with us on 087-6392531, send an email to nwspca@hotmail.com or join our Facebook page.

Paddy Brady: “No, there’s not enough guards in Gorey, and they’re too busy doing other things.i won’t say what they are, but they’re too busy doing other things, and they should be doing their job. And you never find a guard when you want them. If you call them out, it takes half an hour to come down to the house, that’s all I can say to you. “

Pat Cullen “Without a doubt, I don’t think there is. It’s not the fault of the local garda siochana, unfortunately our government has dragged us to this situation where they will not fund, and won’t look after, the people in this country at the moment”

Margaret Dunne McCarthy “Well I think Gorey gardai are doing an excellent job, but I feel that there should be more gardai up in the station and also in outlying areas like Courtown and Riverchapel. It would be a good idea to have more community policing, the gardai getting to know the young people, and maybe young people who are at risk”.

Awards for Wexford Opera production Silent Night by American composer Kevin Puts, last year’s critically acclaimed opera set against the backdrop of WWI, proved to be both the people’s and the judges’ favourite at the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards, as the Wexford production was awarded two accolades, including Best Opera Production and the inaugural An Post Irish Stamps Audience Choice Prize, in a Gala Ceremony at the National Concert Hall, Dublin. A total of seventeen productions, predominately theatre,

were nominated in this public category, with Silent Night being one of only two operas eligible for the award. For the public to vote an opera their favourite production of last year, is an encouraging development for Irish opera in general and Wexford Opera in particular. This brings the total of ten wins for Wexford Festival since the awards were founded in 1997 and the first time audiences were given a say in what they thought was the ‘Best Irish theatre production’ of 2014.

Meanwhile, the organisation has its sights set on the forthcoming Festival as priority booking for Friends of Wexford Festival Opera opens this coming Saturday, 28 February at 9.30 a.m. To avail of one month’s priority booking and to ensure the best selection of tickets, plus many other benefits, become a Friend of Wexford Festival Opera The 64th Wexford Festival Opera runs from Wednesday, 21 October to Sunday, 1 November, 2015.

What’s On A new month beckons and there’s plenty to see and do

around the county. Here’s the top five for what’s happening

around Wexford over the next couple of weeks.

Wexford Drama Festival, Dun Mhuire Theatre Wexford, March 5 – 13. It’s set to be a busy couple of weeks for theatre fans as the eagerly anticipated Wexford Drama Festival gets underway with over a week’s worth of wonderful productions. This is the 52nd year of the festival and it has produced some memorable performances in the past. A total of eight productions will be staged by drama groups from all over the region, who have been meticulously preparing for the festival in recent months.

The fun gets underway on March 5 as Kilmuckridge Drama Group presents ‘The Kings of the Kilburn High Road’. This is followed on March 6 by Craanford Drama Group’s staging of the John B Keane classic ‘Moll’. Taking to the stage on Saturday night with ‘The Price’ are Doonbeg Drama Group, followed by Bunclody/Myshall Drama Group’s staging of ‘Stolen Child’ on Sunday. Kilrush Drama Group take on a Billy Roche

classic in ‘Poor Beast in the Rain’ on Monday, March 10; while fresh from performances at Wexford Arts Centre, Wexford Drama Group take ‘The Seafarer’ to the stage on March 11. Bridge Drama present George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Pygmalion’ on Thursday, March 12, before the Ballycogley Players bring the curtain down on the festival with ‘There Goes the Bride’ on Friday March 13. Tickets for all events are available from Wexford Arts Centre or on the door nightly.

Kilnamanagh, Oulart, Gorey, Co. Wexford.

PJ Gallagher, Wexford Arts Centre, March 7. Through his exploits as characters such as Jake Stephens on RTE’s hidden camera show ‘Naked Camera’ PJ Gallagher exploded onto the Irish comedy scene and has gained a reputation as one of the country’s finest comedy acts. Now PJ is looking forward to taking his brand new show ‘Concussion’ before a Wexford audience as he makes his debut at The Wexford Arts Centre. Having played some of the biggest comedy festivals in the world, this is the idea opportunity to see

PJ in an intimate setting where you’ll be guaranteed to be rolling in the aisles with laughter.

Tickets are priced at €18 and are available from the Arts Centre Box Office on 053 9123764.

IE/DC, Halfway House Ballycogley, March 7. ‘For those about to rock, we salute you!’ Ireland’s premier AC/DC tribute act are making their way towards the south east and are warning Wexford audiences to get ready to be ‘Thunderstruck’. Formed in 2013 by a group of musicians and die hard AC/DC fans, IE/DC has gone on to become one of the country’s premier AC/DC tribute acts. Capturing the energy of the Australian rockers is not something that is easily done, but this group of lads certainly come as close as possible as they rip through a set of absolute belters such as ‘You Shook

Me All Night Long’, ‘Whole Lot of Rosie’, ‘Back in Black’ and many many more from AC/DC’s extensive back catalogue. Mimicking the vocals on many of AC/DC’s hits would be a particular challenge, however, singer Eoghan McHale switches effortlessly between Bonn Scott and Brian Johnson delivering with power and an extensive range. The show will get

underway from 10 p.m. and be warned, it’s going to get loud!

Basciville EP Launch, St Iberius Church, March 13. St Iberius Church on Wexford’s Main Street has hosted some wonderful concerts in recent years. Stunning performers such as Josh Ritter and Mick Flannery have used the stunning acoustics in the venue to maximum effect, and not lost in such company is one of Wexford’s most exciting musical prospects – Basciville. Finding its roots in soul

and blues, Basciville’s music is totally encapsulating and ranges from head nodding, foot stomping sing alongs to delicately constructed masterpieces that will command pin-drop silences in any room. Cillian Byrne is no stranger to the Wexford music scene, but with Basciville, he has found his own voice and we’re sure glad that he did. The closest comparison,

perhaps, that can be made in terms of sound is Hozier, and seeing how the Wicklow man is currently taking the world by storm, there’s no reason why Cillian and Basciville can’t go on to enjoy major musical success too. Entry to the gig is priced at €12 and also includes a free copy of Basciville’s EP ‘Blues In Red’.

Classic Artists Night: Full Irish, Wexford Arts Centre, March 14. There’s no better way of celebrating the feast of the patron saint of this little island than listening to a group of extremely talented local artists play a set of wonderfully varied songs from a catalogue of Irish musicians. Alright, so it might be happening slightly ahead of Paddy’s Day, but this night is

sure to get you right in the mood for celebrating with a set of belting tunes from Ireland’s best loved acts. Following on from a hugely successful Valentine’s Night Love Songs Classic Artists night, this one looks set to be even better as a talented troop of musicians take on the Irish heavyweights. The brainchild of the

musical McGyver, Ollie Dempsey, the classic nights have provided a wonderful platform for local talent to flourish, and as well as that, just a great night out for all those in attendance. Tickets are on sale now from Wexford Arts Centre at 053 9123764.

Public air their views on Wexford Quays Co. Council Chief Executive Tom Enright has an ambitious vision for the future of Wexford’s quays. GER WALSH Rubbish, rubbish everywhere, except in the bins The problem of rubbish dumped along our rural roads has been a source of comment for some time, but over the last few weeks the situation really has reached epidemic proportions. Well maybe it is not any worse than it has been for months except for the fact that the ditches and hedges along many rural routes have been cut in recent times ahead of the ‘closed’ season and this has resulted in the scale of dumping being laid bare for everyone to see. And it is happening on a really shocking scale. I travelled on one rural route recently and to say that it looked like an unauthorised landfill would be no exaggeration. For a journey of several kilometres there was hardly a yard of space that had not been blighted by someone dumping their household rubbish on the roadside. In rural areas there is a belief that people from the towns are

making the journey to remote parts to get rid of their rubbish but I imagine some rural dwellers are guilty as well. The problem is that many households do not pay for any refuse collection service and instead take the waste in their cars to some place they cannot be seen and dump it. This was always something that happened on a small scale but it seems more and more people are opting just to discard their rubbish on the roadside and this is creating a real headache for the local authority and local communities. In North Wexford there is a new type of adopt a route scheme being tried in conujnction with local tidy towns groups. The idea is that locals would take charge of cleaning up and keeping tidy a fixed stretch of a rural road and they would be supported by the Co. Council. This is a very laudable scheme and one which should

be encouraged in the rest of the county. However, regardless of what good work takes place in communities as they try to clean up the mess left by others, the core problem of illegal dumping will have to be tackled. There is talk that in new legislation people will have to be able to provide proof of where they dispose of their refuse and that would be a good start but it will take more than local authority inspections to make people change their ways. If there is not some form of effective punishment then it is difficult to see how the problem is going to be resolved any time soon.

In the meantime the countryside is being destroyed and tourism, one of the main drivers of the local economy, is being put at risk, because a county which presents a dirty filthy image to visitors around every corner will soon lose its appear for visitors. In the meantime we all have to play our part in helping the authorities to track down the dumpers but the task is not an easy one and even when people are caught the punishment doesn’t always fit the crime.

Better rural transport is vital Cuts proposed to the Expressway network by Bus Eireann have drawn outrage from rural communities, particularly those affected by the decisions. The cutbacks will no doubt make it more difficult to reach some towns in Co. Wexford and it will be seen by many as a further downgrading of rural Ireland. It is a fact that all types of services have been withdrawn from parts of rural Ireland in recent years and people living in these places feel increasingly marginalised. However, in the case of Bus Eireann they point out that the routes concerned are loss making and as they are commercial operators they must take decisions accordingly. The latest move has no doubt also been influenced by the fact that Bus Eireann’s entire

surplus from 2014 will go to pay for the restoration of terms and conditions for its staff which came into effect at the start of this year. Regardless of how loud the protests are over the closure of the routes the decisions are unlikely to be reversed but some way must be found to provide proper transport links to places like Bunclody. The numbers of people requiring the transport in these towns do not justify a high speed service to the capital but at the moment there is no other service for these people and one must be found. A more frequent, comprehensive and

better funded rural transport network is vital. This could connect a range of rural locations to the high speed routes and both could combine to even offer an improved service to what existed in the past. This rural network could also connect with the train services to Dublin creating much needed

additional passengers for the trains. In fact increased numbers on the trains are vital if cuts as a result of lack of usage are not to come down the line as some point in the future. Better to try to do something about it now than shouting protests when cuts are announced

Amazing how reckless parents put children at risk The disregard which people have for the safety of children outside schools never ceases to amaze me. There is concern right across the county that a serious accident is waiting to happen outside one of our primary schools because of the behaviour of motorists and the main culprits are parents themselves. Since the start of the school year last September local councillors have been inundated with requests for wardens, new speed limits, ramps and a whole range of tougher measures at schools right across the county. The latest school to have

the safety spotlight placed on it is St. Aidan’s in Enniscorthy which is actually the largest primary school in the country. The morning and afternoon scenes around the school are by all accounts alarming with people parking all over the place and obstructing the views of other motorists. Now the local council is to look at ways of making the school surrounds safer. Isn’t it amazing that such efforts have to be made by the authorities to try to stop parents putting the lives of children, including possibly their own, in danger.

Welcome to Strawberry County Welcome to Strawberry Country. That could be the message greeting motorists as they arrive in Co. Wexford if Labour Councillor Robbie Ireton has his way. Robbie would like to see a giant strawberry image placed on the roadside at every entrance to the county both to promote the fruit and stress the importance of the strawberry to the local economy. There are those who

think it’s a mad idea but it may not be as far out as it seems. However, Robbie’s other suggestion recently that Gorey was not a tourist town is unlikely to have many supporters, particularly in North Wexford. Robbie believes that Courtown is the be all of things when it comes to tourism in the area but most people would regard Gorey as a very important part of the county’s tourist infrastructure.

Beating the bollards It’s amazing the lengths that some people will go to in their attempts to get around regulations which have been put in place for the safety and comfort of others. Take Rafter Street in

Enniscorthy, for example. It is a pedestrianised street with bollards to stop the traffic. Now some people have been spotted reversing their vehicles along the street from the Market Square end.

My first venture to the Council Chamber A week ago, I had never been to a council meeting.. Then in the space of two days I attended two, the Wexford Municipal District meeting in Wexford town and the Gorey Municipal District meeting in North Wexford. When it comes to what is happening around me locally, perhaps I’m not as informed as I should be, so this was something of an eyeopening experience. . Wexford Meeting The roads were a big issue for councillors at the Wexford meeting and the reason for this, as far as I could see, is that they are constantly facing complaints from the public about damage to their cars from potholes. There seems to be a myriad of problems with Wexford roads at the moment . There are potholes, faulty traffic lights, lack of funding, barriers that accidently block ambulances, and problems with parking.

Rob Ireton

Some councillors even suggested that someone could end up dying from an accident on the roads if these problems are not addressed, and that already accidents have happened because of them, so it’s only a matter of time. It was the potential

seriousness of the situation that made it the focus of the meeting. There were several suggestions by different councillors on how to deal with it. Fixing malfunctioning traffic lights and the putting in place of a stop sign was suggested for one roundabout in the town where several accidents have happened. On the question of the overall decrease in funding for road work in Wexford, Councillor Ger Carthy wondered if an Ger Carthy appeal could be made to central government seeking an inspired a lot of debate at increase. If they are not the meeting was tenants’ successful with this appeal rights. Opinions on the the lack of funding will matter varied with some leave many roads councillors, such as unrepaired, the meeting Robbie Ireton saying that heard. Apart from the long standing derelict houses which often cause serious problems for local residents the members werd also concerned about some more high profile properties which are on their way to becoming eye sores. They include the old Tesco’s near Millgreen and the old Aldi in Gorey across from the community school. While the problem of derelict buildings was considered a major issue, it wasn’t the only one that was discussed in depth. Another problem that

New Subaru fit for Mount Leinster Subaru has created a brand new version of the Outback with new looks and engines, new technology and a plusher interior. The Outback features Subaru’s muchloved symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, a 200mm ride height and under-body protection panels. There are two engine choices – a 2.5litre petrol and a 2.0-litre turbodiesel, both are four-cylinder ‘Boxer’ units It may look similar to its predecessor but the new Outback’s body is completely new. You can blame Subaru’s thousands of Outback owners around the world for the subtle changes they were happy with the old one's look. There are two trim levels on offer – SE models come with automatic LED headlamps, cruise control, Active Torque

Vectoring, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, electricallyadjustable driver’s seat and tinted windows, as well as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system which packs satnav, Bluetooth and a rear view camera. SE Premium models add a sunroof, keyless entry and push-button start, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seats and a powered rear tailgate. Choose an Outback with CVT transmission and it’ll come with Subaru’s ‘EyeSight’ technology. The company believes it’s the most advanced crashpreventing system on the market, and includes two cameras in front of the rear-view mirror that continuously scan the road ahead and also features a lane departure warning system and adaptive cruise control.

When the going gets tough, the Outback can easily mud-plug its way through slushy and craggy routes. There’s also an ‘X-Mode’ function for increased off-road ability as well as a hill-descent option. The Outback has been awarded a five-star rating by Euro NCAP with strong scores in all areas and maximum ratings in side-impact and 18month-old dummy crash tests. All versions come fitted with electronic stability control, six airbags, seat belt reminders and ISOFIX mountings for baby seats. There’s plenty of space inside for five adults, while the large glass area creates a bright and airy atmosphere. A multitude of cubbies, deep door bins and a large glovebox mean there’s a decent amount of storage, while

opening the large tailgate reveals a usefully low loading lip (usefully slightly lower than on the previous model) and a generous 512-litre boot. Fold the rear bench flat – which you can do with a pull of a lever in the boot

– and the carrying capacity increases to a van-like 2,000 litres. And of course, the combination of grippy four-wheel drive and self-levelling rear suspension makes the Outback a first-rate

towing vehicle – it can pull a two-tonne caravan, for instance. For full details and spec please call to your local Subaru dealer JJ Byrne Wexford and Active Cars Carlow.

Gorey Credit Union reaches out to the community Last year Gorey Credit Union decided to take the opportunity to go out to meet people in our community. We decided the best way to do this was by attending local events, starting with the Golden Shears – World Sheep Shearing Competition in Gorey which took place 22 -25 May . The next event we attended was the Gorey Show on June 21st, followed by the Tinahely Show on August 4th. Although, we had previously attended some smaller community events, these were on a different scale. In 2015 we will continue to go out to meet our members, and potential members. We received fantastic feedback from people of all ages and backgrounds. Credit Unions generally seem to be held in high regard with most people saying that they trusted us, this was very

reassuring feedback to receive. Several members of Gorey Credit Union commented on how progressive we have become over the years, while always maintaining a face to face personal contact. While attending these events we gave lots of piggybanks to children who came up to our stand. We are keen to encourage saving from a young age, this is a great habit to get into as they start out in life. The children loved their new piggybanks, and promised to save in them!! We also gave plenty of shopping bags out to weary visitors who were struggling to carry their purchases from around the events. More importantly we gave out plenty of information, and listened to what the public had to

say. Many people found the informal surroundings a more relaxed way to ask questions. We were very surprised by the amount of people who thought we were not lending anymore. Indeed we are lending for all purposes. Most of the enquiries related to Home Improvement Loans, Car Loans and Educational Loans. Perhaps showing that, although we are still lending, it is mostly for very practical reasons. We also had many visitors from outside the Gorey area, who, when they saw all our services asked why did their Credit Union not have all these? This brought to our attention that most of the public were unaware that all credit unions are independent .This gave us the opportunity to explain that anything reported in the media about Credit Unions

Nail Technician Required for New Nair Bar Opening Soon in Wexford Town

Phone: 087 9684442

does not necessarily relate to our Credit Union. We were happy to take on any suggestions or requests for new services, as we already provide online banking, the big issue was debit cards. We are currently trialling a debit card before rolling it out to our membership. These first 3 events of our getting out to meet the community have been a great success. We hope to be out in another location soon, when you see us, come over for a chat.. If you have any suggestions please contact Tom Brennan, our marketing & business development officer on 053 9488723 or marketing@goreycreditunion.co m.

Bad tenants not moved to good houses A belief among large sections of the public that local authority tenants who cause thousands of pounds worth of damage to their homes are automatically re-housed in new accommodation has been dismissed by senior officials at Wexford Co. Council. There have been complaints for years that people who damage local authority houses are rehoused but this concern has intensified in recent times as housing waiting lists grow, with repeated claims that people who do not look after their rented properties are moved on to better accommodation with

many councillors raising the issue at meetings of various Municipal District meetings. There have even been complains that bad tenants are being rewarded with better accommodation at the expense of those who look after their homes and those on waiting lists. However, the views of councillors have been dismissed by Senior Housing Official Liz Hore who told meetings of Municipal District Councils across the county that where people caused damage to council property they were not moved to new

accommodation. She also said that tenants were given a handbook before being provided with a house and their responsibilities in respect of how they looked after the property were made clear to them. Separately it has emerged that Co. Wexford has one of the best records of any local authority in the country when it comes to reletting houses that become vacant. A notion that large numbers of local authority houses are boarded up and unoccupied around the county is another myth.

A double by-pass for Enniscorthy Enniscorthy’s clogged arteries are about to get relief in the form of a double by-pass of the town. Work on the scheme, which will be Co. Wexford’s biggest ever road construction project is expected to begin later this year. The scheme includes bypasses of Enniscorthy both on the east and west sides of the town with a 27km four lane motorway to be constructed to the east and a 5km dual carriageway to be built on the western side of the town. The project will also involve the building of new link roads, local roads and access routes to the new motorway. The scheme includes twenty three roads crossings, two river crossings, two rail crossings in addition to various access

structures. The new motorway will join with the current Gorey by-pass which finishes north of Camolin and will take a route to the east, which will by-pass Camolin, Ferns and Enniscorthy, before rejoining the existing N11 just north of Oylegate. The remaining section of the N11 through Co. Wicklow is due to be completed later this year and when work finishes on the Enniscorthy by-pass in three years time there will be a road of at least dual carriageway status all the way from Oylegate to Belfast. The by-pass to the western side of the town will start at Templescoby and run through Milehouse to Scarawalsh with a new road linking it to the motorway on the eastern side of the town.

When the project is completed the speed limit on the existing N11 will be reduced to 80kph to deter traffic from using it. The scale of the road project can be gauged by the fact that a total of 5.3 cubic metres of earth will have to be excavated as part of the project while a similar amount of filling will be required to build the new roadway. Thirty two hectares of woodland will be planted as part of the project and 2,750 metres of noise and visual barriers will be put in place. There will also be protection for Bats, badgers, Otters and Habitats. One hundred and twenty farm properties will be affected by the building works. Farmers still have use of the lands and can continue to use them until the contractor moves on

site. The consortium which has been awarded the Public/Private partnership contract for the work is headed by the Irish subsidiary of Royal Bam of the Netherlands. The same company is currently

completing work on the M11 Rathnew road project. The good news for motorists is that there will be no tolls on the new motorway whien it is completed, There is no exact start date for the work, but local

politicians will be anxious that sods are turned on the new road well in advance of the general election. It is expected that some preliminary works will begin in the current year but the main effort will not commence until early 2015.

The blue line represents the route of the new motorway which will by-pass Camolin, Ferns and Enniscorthy before rejoining the existing N11 just north of Oylegate. The new by-pass to the west of the town is also shown on the map as are the new link roads which are to be constructed as part of the project.

Foaling Advice The average length of pregnancy in the mare is 334 days. A foal born before 320 days is premature. Most mares will foal without any bother but it is vital to be in attendance to ensure that you can assist or get assistance if necessary. What are the signs to look out for? • The udder will start to increase in size 2-4 weeks prior to foaling. • Hormonal changes in last few weeks can cause a dip to appear either side of the tailhead. • The mare may ‘wax up’ 1-7 days before foaling. This is a honey-like secretion from the teats. • The vulva can elongate when foaling is very close. A maiden mare may show no sign at all so you must be very vigilant. Preparation Have a good deep straw bed ready. A tail wrap can be put on in first stage of labour. Have 0.5% chlorohexidine ready to treat the navel. Have a feeding bottle and teat available in case it is

needed. The three stages of labour Stage 1 - The mare will show colicky signs, looking at her flank, biting her flank, lying down, getting up again, sweating. Stage 2 - This begins with the waters breaking. Contractions are very strong and should lead to the foal being expelled within 20 minutes. If there is no sign of the foal, if a red bag appears, if you can see the foals soles pointing up or if you can see part of the foal out but not fully, phone us for advice. Do not cut the umbilical cord once the foal is out. Stage 3 - This involves the passing of the placenta. This should happen within three hours of birth. Do not pull on the placenta if it has not been released. When the placenta passes, put it in a bucket of water for us to examine at the mare and foal check at 18-24 hours post foaling. no fluid dripping from navel COLOSTRUM The first milk is hugely important to ensure a healthy foal. If this is insufficient or of poor quality, the foal is very susceptible to infection. They need to absorb this within the first 12 hours. A foal is at risk if the mare runs milk prior to foaling, the mare has inadequate colostrum, or if the foal doesn’t suck. A blood sample can be taken from the foal at the mare and foal check at 18-24 hours after foaling to check if it has received sufficient high quality colostrum

Eoin

Adam Ennis

Introduction Hi everyone! Eoin’s after leaving me (once again) to head off to Liverpool with the lads. So, it’s just me this week! Before I start, there’s one thing I may get across! I went onto Facebook the other day and checked something I never really paid any attention to, which was the “Other” folder in messages. For those of you on Facebook, you should probably check it. It’s where messages from people who aren’t “Friends” with you go. I’m always asking people to write to us and let us know what they think, if they agree or disagree. Well, I went into these messages

during the week and as well as messages from some guy who found my passport last year, there was a ridiculous amount of

responses which I had received without noticing. Some really friendly and nice and others…not so. One woman in particular,

Eoin Healy 5 Life Tips (Part 2)

who I’ll leave nameless, living in Dublin decided to message me and go to town on me! After spending about 30 minutes in an inconsolable fit of laughter, reading through her essay on why she disagreed with something I had put in, I figured this was necessary. There’s pretty much nothing we write in here which people should take seriously or get offended over. They’re opinions with the odd rant thrown in. Other than that, thanks for reading and don’t be afraid to message me now that I know about that folder.

A few weeks ago I wrote about a few things I do to make life a little handier. I went onto Facebook during the week and got a message from a mother who told me she loved it and wondered if I had any more. So, here we go 5 more life tips: No more crying from cutting onions – Eating chewing gum stops you from crying while taking on the mammoth task of dicing the dreaded onion.

TUNE OF THE WEEK Rihanna, Kanye West & Paul McCartney – FourFiveSeconds A friend told me this a few months ago, and I had never heard of it before (apparently it’s pretty well-known), and it works!

Without a doubt, this week’s #1 spot goes to Rihanna, Kanye and Paul McCartney. I haven’t been listening to much radio, but no doubt this is all over it! Absolutely love this!

Charge your smart phone more quickly –

Have you ever been in a rush to go out and you have hardly any battery in your phone? Well, it happens to me pretty much every day. Turning your phone on ‘Airplane Mode’ and plugging it in will charge your phone waaaaaaay faster than usual. Frozen Grapes – Frozen Grapes are up there with the best things to ever happen. If you’re into your white wine, freeze grapes and put them in as an alternative to ice-cubes which just water-down your drink. Even if you don’t drink wine, frozen grapes are so much nicer than regular grapes! Give it a go! Cool your beer quicker – It really irks me that most off licenses don’t keep crates of beer in the fridge. So, when I go to pre-drinks I’m stuck drinking roomtemperature bottles because cooling them usually takes forever… until now. Wrap each bottle in a wet piece of kitchen paper, stick them

in the freezer and BAM, less than 5 minutes later they’re cold!

Make your runners water-resistant – As I’ve said a few times before, I’ve a bit of a thing for new runners. Obviously keeping them clean is a big thing with buying new kicks. The best trick I have is definitely this: If you have new nonwaterproof runners, go out and buy clear bee wax, or just a normal candle will do. Rub the wax all over your new runners, dry it with a hair dryer and repeat once or twice more. You can pour whatever you want on the runners, and it’ll bounce right off! (y)

Facebook Priorities There’s very little online that frustrates me more than scrolling through my Newsfeed and seeing gruesome videos being uploaded onto Facebook, or ridiculous Pages or Groups that have no purpose being there only to offend people. If you’re on Facebook you’ll know what I mean. Between videos of animal abuse to child abuse and everything in between, it begs the question: Why aren’t Facebook monitoring this? I remember a few months ago a picture of a mother breastfeeding her child was deleted from Facebook because it “violated Facebook’s community standards”. Same goes for a

campaign to legalise same-sex marriage which was taken down for the same reason only a few weeks ago. Eh, perspective please? These videos are being reported thousands of times and nothing is being done. Fair enough, people should be able to post as they please, but there has to be a line. I’ve seen a few people posting about this in the last

News Wexford rally crews compete in National Championship The first of the eight rounds of the Triton National Rally Championship got underway with the ‘Abbeyleix Manor Hotel’Rally, in wet and windy conditions near Borris-inOssary last Sunday. Overnight heavy rain presented challenging conditions for the competitors to negotiate throughout all nine stages. The overall winner was Donegal’s Donagh Kelly (Ford Focus WRC) and his Derry codriver Kevin Flanagan who finished 38.7 seconds ahead of the Subaru WRC of Garry Jennings/Rory Kennedy with Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry (Subaru WRC) a further 25.4 seconds behind in third. Wexford was well represented with some great finishes in very difficult conditions.

A class win for Graham and Tom Scallan see them now leading the new GrpR and Class 5 rankings in the Triton National Rally Championship. This was their first outing in their new Mitsubishi Evo X R4 and despite a few issues throughout the day, they were very happy with its handling and are looking forward to even greater performances in

upcoming events. Speaking afterwards, they commented “ it's a very good car, it may not have been in the overall results from this event, it was hard conditions and we had a few issues but we learned a lot”. The best drive of the day by a Wexford crew had to be that of James Bradley and Maria Kehoe who finished 2nd overall in the Junior’s Class in their Honda Civic. This was their first day out in a new car. A great drive that would mark them out as contenders for a top spot before the year is out. Tonya Fortune and Damian Lawlor took second in class 3 and felt they had a really good rally, despite the difficult conditions. Tonya looks like she now has got the hang of the Honda Civic Type R. She managed to knock 29secs off her times on the second loop, and a further 71secs off on the third loop. With this solid start

to the championship, they hope to pick up the pace withanother good run in the Midlands Rally at the end of March. A great run by Tommy Kelly and Ger Foley saw them finish first in class 11F in their Honda Civic. Also in a Honda Civic, Graham Bradley and Gary Bradley finished in 5th position in class 2. Brendan Furlong and Majella Wickham finished 5th in class 10 in there Peugeot 205. J.J. Furlong and Paul Furlong finished in 8th position in class 11R in their Talbot Sunbeam.

Political Notebook

Mythen is the man for Sinn Fein A year from now the country will almost certainly be in the teeth of a general election campaign but for much of the next year it will seem as if the campaign is actually in full swing as the various parties and individual candidates work hard to build their profile and influence the electorate. Nationally the election campaign is really underway and locally the Sinn Fein selection convention last week signalled the Wexford kick off of what is expected to be Election 2016.. It seems that Sinn Fein’s decision to select Johnny Mythen came as a bit of a surprise to many in other parties who had been confidently predicting for months that Oisin O’Connell would be the SF standard bearer. They were pointing to the decision to open a Sinn Fein office in New Ross as proof that the Foulksmillsman was the chosen one and other parties had been planning their election strategy on that basis. However, for several weeks, despite the fact that the party hierarchy may have favoured O’Connell, it was clear that at best it would be a close run affair but the outcome was always more likely to be in

Mythen’s favour. In the local election last year Mythen polled almost exactly twice as many votes as the new Ross based councillor and was snapping at the heels of James Browne, who as the local TD's son in Enniscorthy town enjoyed a big head start. The grass roots of the party seem to have taken the view that opting for a middle of the road politician with a proven ability to win votes offered SF the best chance of winning a seat in what will be a difficult constituency for the party. Mythen has many advantages. His location in the centre of the county is a major plus. Over the decades Enniscorthy based candidates of all parties have always enjoyed an advantage over their opponents from the other districts because their location usually makes them very transfer friendly. Mythen would not be seen as a radical and may appeal to some middle class sections of the population who, according to the opinion polls, are starting to give Sinn Fein a second look. With a team of five Co Councillors in place since last year Sinn Fein should be

in a much better position to organise the vote right across the county and with the wind currently behind the party few will dismiss the Enniscorthy man’s chances of making it a successful debut bid for Leinster House. But Enniscorthy will be a crowded area with Paul Kehoe, James Browne and Independent John O’Rourke all likely to pulling votes out of the district in addition to Mythen. Sinn Fein will looking to the party machine in Wexford town to deliver sizeable support for their man while Fionntan O’Suilleabhain’s efforts since becoming a councillor in Gorey will also be expected to pay dividends. But the big question for the party relates to Mick Wallace. To be in with a chance of taking a seat they must put a dent in his 2011 performance. If some support moves from Wallace, who does not involve himself in constituency work, to Mythen then both could possibly be elected.

However, there is a long distance to travel between here and polling day and national issues, as well as the candidates selections by other parties and the number of independents in the field, will all influence the final outcome. But Sinn Fein does have the advantage that they are first in the field with a middle ground candidate who has the ability appeal to people outside the party core base. It was the first occasion that there a contest in the party for a general election nomination in this county and big numbers turned up for the vote in Ferns. By all accounts, despite a close vote on the night the entire party organisation left fully united behind the candidate.
