Honoring our nation

FROM KINDERGARTEN THROUGH COLLEGE

Every day is a celebration of the United States of America at Georgia Military College. It is on our historic campus that our time-honored values of Duty, Honor, Country and Character Above All are imparted to the students we serve, from our Kindergarten to our College students.

Each of our Preparatory School students recites the Pledge of Allegiance every day.

Our middle and high schoolers, as well as our college cadets raise and lower our Nation’s colors every morning and afternoon, as the campus stands still.

Our college Corps of Cadets also carries America’s colors proudly during parades and other ceremonies.

Demonstrating respect for our great Nation inspires patriotism in our students so that as they develop into the leaders of tomorrow, they understand the freedoms each one of us shares in being an American, and the sacrifices endured to preserve such freedoms.

While much has changed since our founding in 1879, one thing has not: graduates of Georgia Military College are prepared to lead with civility and selfless service, grounded in the principles of Duty, Honor, Country and Character Above All!

GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE GEORGIA'S LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

LEADERSHIP

Georgia Military College is a unique leadership institute, where our students and cadets are taught to lead through service to others. They are taught how to embrace teamwork and grow into contributing citizens. Inside our classrooms, talented and dedicated faculty provide a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and a character-based college-level education to inspire students to reach their full potential.

GMC has carried on the traditions of leadership and excellence since 1879.

One of our most cherished traditions is the Cadet Prayer, which is recited during every parade and at many events. Its words represent leadership in the truest sense.

Cadet Prayer Almighty God, General of all life’s forces, Commander of nature, we praise Thy holy name.

Visit Thy presence upon us and all former GMC cadets. Reinforce us in our quest for knowledge, integrity, and leadership. Instill in us humanitarianism and bless our enemy whoever he might be. Extinguish from our daily lives greed and envy, and make us champions of right and ladies and gentlemen of honor. May we glorify Thy name in victory and be courageous in defeat. Help us ever to think first of our comrades, and secondly of ourselves, and always of Thee.

Guide our footsteps and cleanse our minds. May we be first in the service of our country and first in Thy service.

Lead us, O Lord, that we might lead.

Amen

SUMMER 2022 | THE CADENCE 5

We have an important mission at Georgia Military College which includes making our students leaders in their communities and workplaces.

Georgia Military College students are expected to demonstrate a high degree of personal responsibility. Said another way, students are taught the importance of fulfilling their obligations.

Georgia Military College students are expected to display a strong sense of personal integrity. As men and women of honor, students keep their word and fulfill their promises.

Georgia Military College is devoted to strengthening the love our students have for our great nation, as well as their resolve to become contributing citizens. They are afforded opportunities to affirm their loyalty to the United States, and to reflect on the fundamental importance of our nation’s founding principles.

This distinction has been at our core since our founding.

the sacrifices endured to preserve them.

Leadership lessons start with GMC’s earliest grades. Elementary students are selected to lead a small group of their peers to help the cafeteria staff clean the lunch tables and ensure the space is prepared for the middle school students. The 5th grade classes select a student who serves as the class leader for one week. During their time as class leader, they are responsible for ensuring their uniforms and personal appearances are correct, and they assist the teacher with inspecting the rest of the class. These daily routines introduce the concepts of servant-leadership and personal responsibility for our youngest students.

At GMC, all 9th – 12th graders are members of the JROTC program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Army. This program is focused on instilling values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.

Today, in a time of unprecedented opportunities and challenges, we believe in the need for a Georgia Military College education –the kind that fosters civility, develops the intellect and character of the students we serve, and elevates the public discourse, so that challenges are met head on, solutions are found, all in an environment of mutual respect for your fellow man.

Patriotism and leadership are woven into the fabric of daily life for GMC students. Each of our Preparatory School students recites the Pledge of Allegiance every day. Our middle and high school students, as well as our college cadets, raise and lower our Nation's colors every morning and afternoon, as the campus stands still. The Corps of Cadets also carries America's colors proudly during military parades and other ceremonies. Demonstrating respect for our great Nation inspires patriotism in our students. As they develop into the leaders of tomorrow, they understand the freedoms we Americans all share, and appreciate

JROTC’s mission, "To Motivate Young People to be Better Citizens,” is the guidepost for our program’s success and is a key feature of the GMC Prep School experience.

Throughout the year our high school and middle school cadets join the College Corps of Cadets to conduct parades, ceremonies, and pass in review. Each parade is a new opportunity for our cadet leaders to display their leadership abilities as they lead their respective units.

Our seniors team up with 5th graders several times a year and participate in the Bulldog Buddies Program. GMC Prep Seniors mentor, guide, teach, and assist our elementary students so that they are prepared to enter middle school as cadets.

GMC infuses character and ethics throughout its college curriculum. It is our intention that every campus and every classroom embody an atmosphere of civility. Our classrooms must

always be places where competing ideas, opposing ideologies, moral dilemmas of all descriptions, and cultural differences are appreciated, given a fair hearing, studied, discussed, and debated rationally and civilly.

Each college course has an assignment that focuses on character and ethics for students to complete. GMC also provides a mandatory course for its college students called “Critical Thinking and Character Development.” Select students compete nationally in debating ethical topics and practicing civil discourse during the National Ethics Bowl each year.

New members of the Corps of Cadets receive military and leadership training as soon as they arrive on campus. Cadet leaders run this training, which allows older cadets to hone their skills in the art of leadership. This also teaches the younger and less experienced cadets how to work as a team and respect authority.

Cadets are expected to conduct daily tasks such as keeping a

tidy room, wearing the uniform correctly, and conducting drill and ceremony. They learn customs and courtesies of the military such as how to respond to commands while in formation, how to salute, and how to address military leaders.

Battalion leadership frequently conducts a service project in the community. They are responsible for identifying the need, planning the details of the project, logistical support, and successful completion of the service project. Hours volunteered for service projects within one year are recognized with the Distinguished Order of the Servant Leader Award.

A highlight of the Corps of Cadets experience is the Leadership Engagement Series. This program welcomes guest speakers, including GMC alumni, to discuss topics pertinent to young men and women who will soon lead our nation in military service. We are proud to offer the GMC Corps of Cadets Service Academy Preparatory Program. We are an affiliated prep school that prepares candidates in

GMC’s ROTC program has been named the #1 ROTC program in the 1st Brigade. This is a significant honor as we compete against schools like Texas A&M University, The Citadel, and other esteemed institutions. We also earned the title of “Top Military Junior College in the Nation” for the second consecutive year.

This past summer, GMC hosted our first-ever Seminar on Leadership and Character in Athletics for the Junior College and Prep School football teams. It is important for us to expose our student-athletes to various elements of leadership, teaching them how these skills can help both in the classroom and on the football field. Lessons were delivered on character, discipline, loyalty, respect, fellowship, integrity, and perseverance.

New courses and degree pathways are being designed for our growing Global Online Leadership College to embed leadership development into every online degree program. This will be key as our leadership training is what makes GMC stand out across the higher education online landscape.

LEADERSHIP

The NewDay USA Center for Leadership is well underway. NewDay USA has given the largest gift in the history of GMC to ensure that we will continue to shape our students, community members, and individuals across the nation, into leaders through a world-class theatre. This state-of-the-art space will host internationally renowned speakers and our performing arts programs.

While much has changed at GMC since our founding in 1879, one thing has not: graduates of Georgia Military College are prepared to lead with civility and selfless service, grounded in the principles of “Duty, Honor, Country” and “Character Above All.”

It is our intent that, as a result of their education at GMC, our graduates will recall their training and will instinctively do the right thing, for the right reason, in the right way simply because it is the right thing to do.

LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE

GMC develops students into effective servant leaders and engaged citizens. Our alumni serve as military leaders, civil servants, entrepreneurs, educators, and agents of change. We believe the virtues of character, integrity, and civility will serve as guiding principles for the rest of our students’ lives.

Unrestricted

When you do not restrict the use of your gift, you allow flexibility in meeting needs. These funds are managed prudently and applied where they will be most beneficial to meet a variety of current needs.

Programs & Services

Gifts may be designated to any of the wide variety of programs and services offered by Georgia Military College. Perhaps there is a particular area, such as library enrichment, technology, athletics, or an academic department in which you have an interest. Such gifts will be applied in their entirety to the area of your designation.

Special Initiatives

If you choose to, you may designate your financial assistance to any of several initiatives undertaken by the Foundation through partnering with the school’s leadership to identify special priorities for giving.

Ways to Give

THE WAY FOR RECEIVING

Endowed Gift Opportunities

A gift for endowment demonstrated farsighted commitment to Georgia Military College. Endowments are permanent funds, maintained in perpetuity by the GMC Foundation, from which only a portion of the annual investment return is used for the purpose intended by the donor. The rest of the investment yield is returned to the principal. Thus, over the years, the fund can grow with the goal of keeping pace with inflation. Such endowments, which typically bear the name of the donor or donors, reflect your interests and serve as an enduring testament to your generosity.

Additional gifts may be made to the fund to increase the principal and thereby increase the annual investment income. Endowments represent rewarding gift opportunities because they offer the donor the satisfaction of knowing that his or her gift will continue working for future generations.

The Basics of Establishing an Endowment

• An endowed fund may be established with a contribution in the form of cash, appreciated securities or other charitable gifts such as a bequest.

Georgia Military College Foundation 201 East Greene Street

Milledgeville, Georgia 31061 (478) 387-0230

Fax (478) 445-2867 | alumni.gmc.edu

• It may be established with either a single gift of $25,000 or a gift of at least $5,000 and a pledge of the remaining $20,000 over a period of up to five years.

• The fund is invested by the GMC Foundation, which serves as a steward of the endowed funds. The Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. Contributions are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

Purposes of Endowed Funds

• An endowed gift offers the opportunity for donors to have their names, or the name of a loved one, linked to an area in which they have a special interest, creating a legacy for years to come.

• A named endowment can provide an opportunity for an academic department or an athletic program to grow and excel.

• A named endowment can provide a scholarship to aid deserving students year after year.

Endowment Reporting

As a donor who has established an endowment, you will receive an annual report from the GMC Foundation on the financial status of the fund, including earnings and distributions.

70 Years of Commissioning Leaders ... and Counting

In May, 29 Georgia Military College graduates took their oath to serve in the United States Army after completing GMC’s Early Commissioning Army ROTC Program. These 29 2LTs are now a part of GMC’s history as the year 2022 marked the 70th year of Commissioning Officers into the United States Army at Georgia Military College.

The War Department designated GMC as a Military Junior College in 1950, with the first Commissioned Cadets graduating in 1952. Today, Georgia Military College is one of only four Military

Junior Colleges in the Nation, a distinction in which GMC takes great pride. Under the direction of Professor of Military Science, LTC William Brown, GMC’s Army ROTC Program continues to produce leaders in our nation’s military each year.

The rigor of college academics, leadership development, and military training have always been exceptional in the program but the expansion of those elements has greatly increased in recent years.

facilities that take military training to the next level, providing cadets with hands-on experiences that they will use in their military careers. A robust obstacle course, leadership reaction course, rappel tower, and track and field complex allow cadets to take their military training beyond the classroom for immersive training. This year, GMC opened the Leadership Training Area and Range Complex which is comprised of over 100 acres. Here, GMC cadets take part in weekly drills and field training exercises.

Additionally, cadets travel to other local training facilities in the Milledgeville community to enhance their skills. Cadets

Cadets also work with the Georgia National Guard, taking flight in Blackhawk Helicopters (UH-60). It’s more than just a joy ride, it’s a learning opportunity for cadets to understand the capabilities and limitations of the equipment they will work with on various missions. They conduct cold load training and learn how to properly perform medical evaluations. These lessons are invaluable as cadets prepare for military life.

GMC is committed to preparing our nation’s future leaders to serve the U.S. Army proudly. The Early Commissioning Program at GMC will continue to grow and thrive, as it has for the last 70 years.

GMC Family Tradition

Tradition, legacy, and philanthropy are at the heartbeat of the Pursley family. The Pursley’s GMC connection spans four generations, beginning with Mr. John A. “Gus” Pursley, Jr. in the early 1940s.

When Mr. Pursley (JC 1942) enrolled at GMC as a young man, he had no idea how this decision would set into motion a true family tradition.

Although the world Mr. Pursley grew up in may be drastically different than the one his great-grandchildren are living in today, one thing remains the same - the ideals of character and respect instilled at Georgia Military College.

“My parents met at Georgia Military College. My mother, Louise, worked for the Commandant’s Office from 1940-1942, and my father attended GMC Junior College and was commissioned as an

officer in the Army. He then served in the Philippines in World War II,” shared John “Gus” Pursley, III (GMC Prep 1975). It was these experiences at GMC years ago that helped the late Mr. and Mrs. Pursley pave the way for future generations of their family to embrace Georgia Military College and feel compelled to give back to GMC students.

When reflecting on his own GMC experience as a Prep School student in the 70s, Gus shared how grateful he is for the friendships he formed with his peers from all around Baldwin County. He now appreciates the simple disciplines he learned, like getting his gig line in order and respecting the authority of battalion leadership. “Today when I watch GMC Prep School students, I love seeing them embracing the same traditional values that I learned. However, I believe GMC now is more intentional in teaching discipline, character, and leadership than when I was a student.”

Gus has been particularly impressed with the way character is imparted to GMC’s youngest students. Recently, he visited the Prep School to read to the third graders for Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Gus said he was blown away by the level of respect the students showed one another. “During question time, no one interrupted or talked over each other. They were so respectful. I feel that GMC instills discipline not through a hard-core regimented way, but through the respectful environment GMC provides. This brings out the best in the students.”

In addition to being a proud GMC alumnus, Gus and his wife, Helen, now have a new special title to add: GMC Prep grandparents. Helen Anne is a rising 7th grader, Alexander is a rising 4th grader, Lydia is a rising 1st grader, and Mary Corinne will be in kindergarten this coming year. It is especially meaningful for the family to see how Mr. Pursley’s memory is kept alive through his great-grandchildren now attending GMC Prep.

“It makes me so proud to see my grandkids attending GMC. At the time when my father, who was from Haddock, Ga., was a GMC student, attending junior college was a major stepping stone for young men in a small town. The training GMC provided gave him opportunities to excel in the Army during the World War II era.”

Mr. Pursley spent his whole life saying he owed everything to Georgia Military College, a sentiment that really stuck with his son, Gus. “When I graduated from GMC in 1975, I didn’t appreciate my experience there at the time as much as my father did. One thing he always wanted to do was start a scholarship for 6th-12th graders and give back to the school he loved so much,” commented Gus.

The John A. and Louise F. Pursley, Jr. Scholarship, which was established in 2016, is intended to give financial assistance to someone who otherwise would not have the opportunity for a GMC education. The scholarship will be awarded to a GMC Prep School student (grades 9 – 12) and assist with expenses incurred for tuition, fees, books, or uniforms.

Over the years, Gus came to see why his father was so passionate about GMC and began to appreciate how the school shaped him into the man he is today. Gus is President/CEO of Fowler Flemister Concrete and is deeply invested in giving back not only to GMC but to the Baldwin County community as well. He is a current Georgia Student Finance Authority (REACH) Board Member, and he also serves on the Georgia Chamber of Commerce Board. He has served on the Georgia Ready Mix Concrete Association Board as a member and chairman, has served on the Mary Vinson Library Board as a member and as chairman, and was chairman of the Baldwin County American Red Cross Board. Gus has served on the United Way of Baldwin County Board, the Milledgeville Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce, and volunteered his time as a Boy Scout Troop Leader as well.

Gus and Helen share a deep commitment to Georgia Military College – they are passionate about seeing the Prep School develop and offer new opportunities for future students. Recently, they generously donated funds to help develop the new Prep School Annex. The Pursley Patio is situated outside of the Prep School Annex cafeteria and features an attractive fireplace, and plenty of tables, chairs, and umbrellas for elementary and middle school students to enjoy while eating their lunch in the fresh air.

Gus, who currently serves on the GMC Foundation Operating Committee, was recently inspired to start a new scholarship following a committee meeting. He learned that there are numerous scholarships available to students in grades 6-12 and in the junior college, but not for elementary students. He and Helen felt compelled to step in and fill this void.

“I have witnessed the good GMC does for its youngest students, so we decided to start a scholarship specifically for K-5 students to help them thrive and give them a strong start,” shared Gus. The Gus and Helen Pursley, III Scholarship is intended to give financial assistance to a Georgia Military College Preparatory School student from Milledgeville/Baldwin County beginning in kindergarten and following him or her through 5th grade.

Gus and Helen both highly value the arts program GMC has cultivated in recent years, noting how GMC Prep sees talent in all its students. “The arts program is incredible - there is so much talent at each of the performances. GMC provides activities for everyone, and it’s not just about athletics. There are opportunities around every corner for every child, regardless of his or her interest or ability. GMC values each student and we have seen that firsthand in our grandchildren,” Helen shared.

When asked about the future, both Gus and Helen are looking forward to seeing how GMC continues to produce well-rounded, respectful students. “We believe GMC is going to be a powerful tool in building character in our grandchildren and who they grow up to be, and we are eager to watch them continue in our family’s GMC tradition.”

ROGER AND CAROL AUSTIN CREATE A Lasting Legacy

TO SUPPORT GMC PREP SCHOOL STUDENTS

The power of education has been at the core of Roger and Carol Austin’s lives for as long as they both can remember. “It is something I had lived and breathed when I was young. Steps forward in our education were assumed rather than planned,” noted Roger. Both Roger and Carol were privileged to grow up in homes that highly valued education, setting them up on a path for success early on.

After marrying, Roger and Carol continued their educational endeavors together, attending The University of Georgia, where Roger earned his Ph.D. and Carol her master’s degree. The couple lived in Carrollton, Ga. for seven years while Roger taught Geology at West Georgia College (now The University of West Georgia) and Carol taught in the public school system. In 1974, Roger’s research in kaolin led the Austins to relocate to Milledgeville, Ga. so he could work as a geologist for Freeport Kaolin Co., while Carol continued her career as a public-school teacher. During this time, the Austins raised two children, Susan and Richard.

Roger’s career in geology has taken the Austin family around the globe. After a four-year stint living in Papua,

Indonesia while Roger worked at PT Freeport Indonesia and Carol taught at its international school, the family moved back to Milledgeville in the mid-80s. Their son, Richard, who had been attending boarding school in Hawaii, needed to conclude high school back home. “We looked for a school that provided challenge and would allow Richard to participate in college courses as well. We thought Georgia Military College Prep School would be beneficial to any young man, and quite simply, it worked,” stated Roger. Richard attended GMC Prep for 11th and 12th grade.

Even after Richard graduated from GMC Prep in 1988 and while life moved on for the Austins with a further overseas stint, the couple kept an eye on GMC and liked what they were seeing. Upon returning to Milledgeville in 1996, Carol’s eyes were opened to the needs of Milledgeville’s youth. For nearly 20 years she volunteered by teaching reading at elementary schools in Baldwin County, getting to see firsthand the needs of the community.

It was this experience that spurred the Austins on to support Georgia Military College Prep School. The

24 THE CADENCE | New Theme DONOR GIVING
18 THE CADENCE | Honoring Our Nation

couple was particularly pleased to see the early grades added at GMC Prep. “At the same time GMC Prep was expanding, we were watching problems grow within the youth of the Milledgeville community. We thought a solution to these problems would need to come through both community and government, but asked ourselves, what could we do as individuals?” shared Roger.

It was at that time that the Austins saw a crossover of their interest in GMC and the concern for Baldwin County’s youth. “To be able to sponsor students at early ages and provide an educational path that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to attain was exciting for us.” The couple has since created The Austin Family Scholarship, which will provide financial assistance of $1,000 per year, in perpetuity, to a Georgia Military College Preparatory Student beginning in kindergarten, following him or her through 12th grade.

This scholarship will open doors and allow a deserving student to develop and grow during their entire childhood at GMC Prep School.

Throughout 60 years of marriage, raising children, navigating successful careers, and traveling around the globe, Roger and Carol Austin have seen with their own eyes the true value of education. They look forward to helping students have the best possible start in life with the character-based education found at GMC Prep School. “We’ve learned how important education can be. It’s not just for those who seek out collegiate avenues, but for students who join apprenticeships or attend technical schools,” said Roger. Life at the end of high school is just the beginning. The stronger that foundation, the better the opportunity for success.”

The Distinguished Alumnus Award is the highest honor given by the Alumni Association and recognizes an individual who has distinguished themselves in an outstanding manner and has brought honor to themselves and to GMC. It is presented for service to humanity and dedication that exemplifies the core values of “Duty, Honor, Country” and the regimental accolade of “Character Above All” in their personal and professional life.

LTC Duane Clayton’s outstanding success in the military and be yond stems from a deep love of his country and desire to serve others around him. His life truly exemplifies the GMC core values of “Duty, Honor, Country” and “Character Above All.” LTC Clayton’s leadership and passion for student success has propelled the current GMC Corps of Cadets to great heights in recent years.

LTC Clayton graduated from the Bradwell Institute in 1977 and began at GMC Junior College as a member of the 100th Corps of Ca dets. He credits choosing to attend GMC as being the wisest decision he ever made. Upon completing his associate degree at GMC, LTC Clayton was hired by MG Salet, the President of GMC at the time, to be the first TAC Officer to live in the barracks while he attended Georgia College and State University. During that time, LTC Clayton’s aspirations changed from teaching/coaching to pursuing a career in the Army. Upon completing his education at Georgia College, he entered the Army in December 1982. He attended the officer Basic Course in Fort Sill, OK and was stationed at Fort Stewart, GA for all his lieutenant years. LTC Clayton served in Germany for seven years in the 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) in Wurzburg and Schweinfurt, where he was a Field Artillery Intelligence Officer, Fire Support Officer, Battalion Motor Officer, Battalion Adjutant, and Battery Commander.

After leaving 3ID, he was an observer controller at 7th Army Training Center, Hohenfels. He then went to Fort Bragg, NC where he became the Training Officer of the First Region ROTC of Cadet Command. After two years in ROTC, LTC Clayton became the Field Artillery Intelligence Officer for the Corps Artillery, XVIII Airborne Corps, and then Opera tions Officer of the Multiple Launch Rocket System Battalion, 3-27 FA. He also served in Heidelberg, Germany as the Inspections Chief of the V Corps Inspector General’s Office. He reinstituted a Corps level inspections program at the direction of LtGen John W. Hendrix. After completing this assignment, he went back to Fort Stewart to become the Battalion Commander of 2nd of the 306th FA where he assisted in the preparation of many units to go into harm’s way after 9/11. He then became the Inspector General of 3ID which deployed to Iraq twice. LTC also served as Assistant to the Garrison Commander to lead the Welcome Home and 4th of July Celebration for the Division as they returned from Iraq. His final duty in the Army was to serve as the Brigade Operations Officer of the 157th Infantry Brigade, where he and his team were responsible for deploying three National Guard Brigades, Vermont, Iowa, and Mississippi, to either Iraq or Afghanistan in eighteen months.

LTC Clayton retired from the Army in December 2010 and embarked on a new career in JROTC at Dyer County High School in Newbern, TN. After two years, LTC Clayton returned home to Georgia Military College to become a TAC Officer and impact the next genera tion of military leaders. He was promoted to Deputy Commandant and then reassigned to his current position of Operations Officer, where he plans to serve until retirement in March of 2023. As Operations Officer, he evaluates what the Cadets must do on an annual basis, such as the Dining In, service events in the community, and conducts uniform and room inspections. He also serves as the Rifle Team Coach and is a key figure and mentor to the entire Corps of Cadets.

LTC Clayton and his wife, Karen, have been married for almost 40 years. He is a proud father of two sons, Duane (Skylea) and Jason (Traci), and he has four adorable grandchildren.

Alumni Achievement Award

MYLES HUMPHUS

The Alumni Achievement Award is given to a GMC alumnus who recognizes the importance of their education at GMC and exemplifies the core values of “Duty, Honor, Country” and “Character Above All” in their professional and personal lives. Their interest and loyalty is evident through their contributions of time, talents, and/or philanthropic support to GMC.

GMC Prep School Alumnus Myles Humphus started at GMC as a 7th grader and graduated high school in 1995. Humphus was raised in Milledgeville, GA and was born into a GMC family. He is the son of GMC History teacher and Senior Army Instructor, Major Thomas Humphus. His mother, Kija Humphus, taught dance and was a seam stress in her own boutique, Kija’s, located in downtown Milledgeville. His brother, David Humphus, is a GMC alumnus as well.

While at Georgia Military College Prep School, Hum phus earned ten athletic letters and set records in football and track. He notes that some of the most prominent traits he learned and developed at GMC are personal pride and tenacity. It was on the sports fields at GMC where Humphus learned the value of hard work and that winning was just one part of life. Thanks to his time at GMC Prep, he learned firsthand that “hard work” means more than just accomplishing the task. It means to truly understand what comprises the task and to dedicate oneself to accom plishing it as effectively and ethically as possible.

Since graduating from GMC Prep in 1995 and going off into the world, Humphus’ journey has taken him from playing professional football, to prizefighting, and now to working as an actor and stuntman living in New York City.

After high school, Humphus attended the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School, then Liberty University and finally the University of Memphis, playing football at each school.

He continued his schooling by enrolling in The William Esper Studio in New York City, where he studied acting.

He also worked in the corporate world and was a prize fighter before finding a successful career in film, television, commercials, and even book covers. With over 70 credits to his name, Humphus shares that he still has much more ahead. For the past 9 years, Humphus has worked alongside friend and coworker Tanoai Reed, stunt doubling Dwayne Johnson on movies such as Furious 7, Jumanji, Jungle Cruise and most recently, Black Adam. His career as an actor includes appearances on Banshee, New Amsterdam, Law and Order, and most recently the iPhone 13 commercial and Jigsaw.

Humphus also works with the Lionheart Foundation in corporate engagement, channeling donations to serve the vital needs of the foundation. The Lionheart Foundation works alongside local law enforcement to investigate and prosecute child sex traffickers within major cities in the United States.

Humphus is a proud alumnus and supporter of GMC Prep School. He has committed his valuable time and re sources over the years to benefit both the football and fine arts programs at GMC Prep, helping GMC Prep students to express themselves physically and artistically. We are so grateful for his commitment to his alma mater, and are very proud to call him a member of the GMC family.

Myles currently resides in New York City with his wife, Marina Rakic.

Honorary Alumnus Award

COACH BERT WILLIAMS

The Honorary Alumnus Award is unique in that it is not given to an alumnus of GMC, but is given to an individual who has rendered exceptional and conspicuous service to GMC. This person is a model of integrity and stature and has demonstrated a continuing devotion to GMC and the values of the institution.

The 2021 GMC Honorary Alumnus Award was posthumously awarded to GMC Junior College Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Bert Williams. After a 23-year career at GMC, Williams retired in November 2020 as he battled cancer. Although we lost Coach Williams in August 2021 after a courageous fight, his years of exceptional service to GMC will forever live on within the GMC JC Football Program and in the hearts and lives of the student-athletes he served.

Coach Williams was a native of Augusta, GA, and graduated from Westside High School, and was a four-year letterman at Davidson College from 1986-1990. He began his coaching career at the University of Georgia, had a three-year stint as the offensive coordinator at Union College and came to GMC in 1994 as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach for former head coach Robert Nunn.

Named GMC Head Football Coach and Athletic Director in 2000, Williams accumulated a record of 156-58 and led the program to have one of the country’s highest win percentages in NJCAA football. He led the Bulldogs to 10 NJCAA bowl games, a national championship in 2001, national championship game appearances in 2002 and 2013, and was named National Coach of the Year in 2001 (NJCFCA), 2002 (AFM/Schutt), and 2013 when he was named Na tional Coach of the Year by both the AFCA and the NJCAA. Williams was inducted into the NJCAA Football Hall of Fame in 2010, the first active NJCAA coach to be so honored. He also served as the NJCAA Football Coaches Association president and the ACCFCA president. Williams was honored with the J.B. Hawkins Humanitari an Award given by the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.

Williams led the growth of the GMC Athletic Department from one to nine very successful athletic programs. He was responsible for adding men’s and women’s soccer, coed rifle, men’s and women’s cross-country, men’s and women’s golf, and softball. Each of GMC’s JC athletic programs has developed to positions of consistent, high-level success and have won multiple conference championships and competed at national championships.

Williams made a significant impact off the field as he oversaw fa cility improvements to the GMC soccer complex, the addition of the Mason Golf Performance Lab, the Kidd Health and Wellness Center, and the renovation of the Ruark Athletic Complex. Williams was instrumental in raising over $2.5 million in endowed scholarships and operating funds for GMC student-athletes over the years. He and his wife Cathy established the Bert and Cathy Williams Athletic Endowed Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance to GMC student-athletes.

Perhaps most important to him, Coach Williams delivered on his primary mission to serve the student-athletes he devoted his life to. Under his guidance and leadership, over 430 student-athletes moved on to four-year schools, with 298 earning NCAA D1 scholar ships and 37 playing for the NFL. The lessons Coach Williams taught on teamwork, perseverance, and character have no doubt inspired and impacted countless GMC alumni. Coach Williams is truly a GMC legend – a man who embodied servant-leadership and integrity throughout his professional career and personal life.

Bert was a dedicated husband to Catherine Ann Coffman of Atlanta, a teacher at GMC Prep School, and a proud father to son Parker (HS’15), and son Zach (HS’19).

Emerging Young Alumni Leader Award

2LT GERARD DAVIS

The Emerging Young Alumni Leader Award is given to a GMC alumnus who has graduated in the last 10 years and is no more than 35 years old. This individual has made an impact in one of the following areas: support to GMC, outstanding contributions to their profession, achievements that bring honor and a demonstration of service and commitment to their community.

2LT Gerard Davis is a prominent young alumnus of the GMC Corps of Cadets who is making quite a mark in the world. As a high school student and JROTC Cadet at Dodge County High School in Eastman, GA, Davis decided to enlist in the Army National Guard to receive the State Service Scholarship. The State Service Scholarship Program is a merit-based and competitive student financial aid program that provides funding to cover the full cost of education for two years at Georgia Military College. Recipients incur an obligation to serve as a commissioned officer in the Georgia National Guard after graduation. This program enables outstanding Georgia students to attend Georgia Military College and then serve their state and country as officers in the Georgia National Guard.

2LT Davis attended basic training in Fort Sill, OK after graduating from high school in July 2015, and then went on to Advanced Individual Training in Fort Leonardwood, MO, where he trained as an 88M Transportation (Motor Transport Operator). Upon returning home in November 2015, Davis knew he wanted to continue with his education, and he started his journey in the GMC Corps of Cadets.

After graduating from the Corps of Cadets in the fall of 2017, 2LT Davis went on to attend Georgia Southern Universi ty, where he earned his BS in Supply Chain Management in December 2020. Davis, having been enlisted in the Georgia National Guard since 2015, knew that there was a high chance he would not live in Georgia due to the career field he had chosen. So, he commissioned in the Army Reserves as a 2LT in December 2020 so he could be more mobile in his military career. His current unit is in Kingwood, WV.

In his civilian life, 2LT Davis currently works at Amazon as an Area Manager. 2LT Davis works at Amazon DRC1 in Richmond, VA, a delivery station that sorts, picks, and delivers Amazon packages.

2LT Davis is a brother of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incor poration, and enjoys speaking to youth through mentorship, community involvement, working out, and competing in body building. He plans to continue to advance his career at Amazon and create more ways to serve his community through his involvement in Omega Psi Phi. He speaks to local youth, motivating them to be the best they can be, stay in school, and have a career plan for their future. He also assists local coaches in training athletes to motivate them to pursue athletics at the next level.

2LT Davis is passionate about equipping high school students with the tools and mentorship they need to accomplish their goals. In May 2021, he awarded his first scholarship to a local high school student who aspires to further her education and career in the military. He has a goal to provide more scholarships to JROTC high school seniors who are interested in furthering their education and pursuing a military career.

2LT Davis lives in Chester, VA. He is married to Angie Davis, and has two stepdaughters, Mia and Lana.

GMC Service Award

This is the highest recognition given for outstanding service and volunteerism.

Mr. Dudley Rowe is a shining example of how one can give of their time, talent, and treasure to generously serve an institution like Georgia Military College. Mr. Rowe was born and raised on his family farm in the southwest part of England. At age 16 he joined ECC, PLC, a large British international minerals and chemicals company, as a student engineer. This started a 45-year career that took him to all parts of the world.

He graduated as an electrical engineer from Plymouth Institute of Technology and received further education at Man chester University and other business schools. After graduation, he worked in several management positions in various parts of the world, living in England, Italy, and India before coming to the USA. His role expanded as the company grew and he was appointed to the Board of ECC International. Before his retirement as a senior executive, Rowe was promoted to EVP, responsible for all global operations. In this capacity he traveled extensively and was responsible for approximately 4,500 people in 20+ countries.

Since 1993, Rowe has been an integral part of the Georgia Military College Foundation, as well as a valued partner and friend to the institution at large. Throughout the years, he has served the Foundation on the Advisory Committee, Finance Committee, and the Development Committee. Rowe has also served as the second Vice Chair, and most notably as the Chairman of the GMC Foundation from 2011 through 2021, in addition to an advisory member for the GMC Board of Trustees.

Rowe’s impact on the GMC Foundation has been remarkable. He grew and restructured the Foundation Board of Trustees to 44 members geographically located across the U.S., all dedicated to the success of every GMC student. His efforts further aligned the Foundation with the College’s pillar of investing in the future of GMC. Rowe provided dedicated servant-leadership and executive oversight that saw the GMC Foundation’s net asset position grow by nearly 250% from $11.5 million to over $40 million during his tenure as Chairman. He was also instrumental in organizing a grants program for the Founda tion and providing invaluable leadership at the strategic level.

During the difficulty and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, Rowe acted immediately, guiding the Foundation to make a significant contribution to student scholarships, allowing students to continue their education during challenging times.

Rowe and his wife, Jenny, established the Wright-Rowe Band Scholarship Endowment to benefit GMC Prep School students, demonstrating their deep appreciation of the education GMC provides. Rowe was named Honorary Alumnus in 2008, a recognition bestowed upon individuals who are not alumni of GMC, but who have rendered special or exceptional service to the school or to its Alumni Association. Upon Rowe’s retirement as Chairman of the GMC Foundation, he was named Chairman Emeritus, the first-ever to receive the recognition.

Mr. Rowe and Jenny have lived in Baldwin County since 1990. They have two children, Gary and Lisa, and two grand children who are GMC Prep School alumnae, Alexandra and Samantha.

Military Service Award

The Military Service Award is given to a GMC Corps of Cadets alumnus who has rendered unusual and conspicuous service, heroic effort and action or service to their city, state or nation while bringing honor to GMC and the Corps of Cadets.

MAJ Derick Taylor’s success while a member of the GMC JC Corps of Cadets was exemplary. He attended GMC with an ROTC scholarship from 1998-2000 and received his commission in 2000. Taylor’s GMC accomplishments are many. He served as Regimental Commander from 1999-2000, was President of the Student Honor Council and Student Government, was an editor of the student newspaper, was a member of the GMC Drill Team, and even served as announcer for GMC junior college football games. He was the very first recipient of the Order of the Centurion medal, in addition to receiving the George C. Marshall Leadership Award, the Sinclair Milner Award at ROTC Advanced Camp in 1999, and the Superior Cadet Decoration Award in 2000.

He credits the strong foundation he received at GMC to giving him the best possible start in life. GMC offered him immense opportunities to participate, lead, and thrive as a member of the Corps of Cadets, and most importantly, learn how to work with people. Witnessing the strength created through camaraderie during his time at GMC was foundational in his understanding that people are the most important aspect of an organization. Above all, “Duty, Honor, Country” was the first of many codes MAJ Taylor would subscribe to in his adult life and throughout his time as a Soldier. That noble higher purpose he learned and embraced at GMC has served him well throughout his military career.

Since commissioning in 2000, MAJ Taylor has embarked on an impressive 20+ year military career. He is still serving in the U.S. Army, as a MAJ / O-4, though he has had the unique opportunity to serve across all three components of the Army (USAR, ARNG, and RA). Over the course of almost 24 years, MAJ Taylor has served as an Infantryman, Human Resource Manager, and Special Forces Officer. He is currently deployed as the Deputy Operations Officer for a Counterterrorism Task Force in Qatar.

MAJ Taylor has deployed worldwide in support of National Defense and Counterterrorism activities to Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Jordan, Turkey, Tunisia, Qatar, and Djibouti. He has also completed foreign assignments in Germany, South Korea, Jamaica, and Estonia.

Taylor’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Meritorious Service Med al, Joint Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Infantrymen’s Badge, Special Forces Tab, Master Military Freefall Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Basic Recruiter’s Badge, and Career Counselor’s Badge.

In addition to serving his country, MAJ Taylor has prioritized volunteering with community service and outreach programs, going as far back as his introduction to community service at GMC with Habitat for Humanity, and continued efforts with the Wounded War rior Foundation, Special Forces Foundation, and Green Beret Foun dation. He is now a member of the Board for the Military Freefall Association. Each of these veteran-oriented non-profit organizations provides services and opportunities to warriors who have been injured, physically or mentally, during our nation’s conflicts. MAJ Taylor also maintains professional instructional ratings with both the United States Parachutists Association and the International Body Flight Association.

MAJ Taylor has one son, Jonathan, who recently enlisted in the TXARNG as an Infantryman.

Military Heritage Weekend

Georgia Military College celebrated its second Military Heritage Weekend in April, honoring GMC alumni military men and women that serve our country.

A highlight of Military Heritage Weekend was the induction of Dr. James Baugh and COL Tom Torrance into the GMC Hall of Heroes. COL Torrance and his family, as well as the family of the late Dr. Baugh, celebrated this special honor with a private luncheon in the Old Capitol Legislative Chamber, followed by the formal induction during the Military Honors Parade on Grant Parade. The GMC Hall of Heroes pays tribute to alumni of the GMC Corps of Cadets who have demonstrated extraordinary service to our nation while bringing honor to Georgia Military College. This is the highest recognition for an alumnus of the GMC Corps of Cadets.

Dr. James Baugh and COL Tom Torrance are true American heroes. Their service and sacrifice for their country has made them worthy of this honorable distinction. Through lessons of leadership and courage taught at Georgia Military College, Dr. Baugh and COL Torrance fought bravely in service to our Nation. We are blessed by these two alumni of GMC who returned to their beloved city of Milledgeville and alma mater of Georgia Military College after their years of service at home and overseas in our U.S. Army.

Mrs. Beegee Baugh and COL Tom Torrance at the Hall of Heroes 2022 luncheon. Mrs. Baugh accepted the honor on behalf of Dr. James Baugh, a 2022 inductee.

During the weekend, GMC unveiled two new plaques on GMC’s Milledgeville campus. GMC celebrated one unveiling in the Torrance Lobby at the Prep School Annex. COL and Mrs. Thomas G. Torrance (USA, Ret.) have sponsored the lower lobby of the Prep School Annex in honor and memory of all members of the Torrance family who attended GMC or served on staff.

GMC also celebrated the Baker Family plaque unveiling in the Old Capitol Guard Battalion Headquarters. This new naming opportunity will provide continued support for the Old Capitol Guard Drill Team Commanders’ Endowment which provides a scholarship for a Junior College Corps of Cadets Drill Team member. This endowment was established by LJ & CJ Baker in 2018 and they continue to support it.

We greatly appreciate the generosity and support for GMC from both the Torrance and the Baker families.
