an amazing place to live, work and play. It’s a perfect spring afternoon. The abundant winter snow and the recent rain have painted the valley vibrant shades of green. I can barely see the western mouth of the glorious Glenwood Canyon, but I feel gratitude for those in the community who challenged the status quo, resulting in a four-lane highway that is not only an engineering marvel, but also preserves the canyon’s beauty and recreational access for everyone to enjoy. The rivers glisten in the afternoon sun as what look like tiny toy cars stop and go through downtown and over the new Grand Avenue Bridge. I have probably never felt prouder of our community than walking over the new bridge among 3,000 people in November 2017. The vision and leadership of the late Leslie Bethel will live on forever in the intricate details of the bridge and other downtown amenities that maintain the character of the town. Dedicated on June 1, 1996, a plaque hung on the Silver Club Building reads “It takes a village to raise a child. This Mall is dedicated to the spirit of community which was the common thread uniting the students, adults and businesses in support of this project.” Glenwood Springs High School students were mentored by professionals in the community to usher their dream of a pedestrian mall to life. Adrift behind a billowy cloud, Mt. Sopris stands proud to the south, much like our community which boasts of an award-winning hospital, quality schools and many other amenities one might not expect to find in a small mountain town. Our own Colorado Mountain College has educated thousands of nurses, teachers and others. It all started when David Delaplane said, “There really ought to be a college here.” To the west, the jagged top of Storm King cuts through the Colorado bluebird sky, and I’m reminded of the 14 heroes who gave their lives to save this beautiful town on that very mountain 25 years ago. We will never forget. As the door of the gondola opens and I step foot onto the platform atop Iron Mountain, I think about how our community is continuously moving forward, thanks to entrepreneurs like Steve Beckley, owner of the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park and Iron Mountain Hot Springs, whose favorite words are “I have an idea.” What will he think of next? This year the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association turns 100. This is an important milestone for our organization, but it’s truly a celebration of the entire community. While it’s difficult to recap an entire century, this “What’s the Story Behind It?” edition of the Insider’s Guide is a collection of just a few of the known (and lesser known) stories of the people, places and things that define the past 100 years of the Glenwood Springs Chamber and the community. Each of these stories or contributors have played and will continue to play a role in enhancing the whole of the community. Whether you are a lifelong local or a first-time visitor to Glenwood Springs, you are a part of this story. Welcome… we’re glad you’re here!

The City of Glenwood Springs was founded by Isaac Cooper and John Blake. The name of the town was changed from Defiance to Glenwood Springs in 1885. It was named after Glenwood, Iowa, the hometown of Cooper’s wife, Sarah.

The Glenwood Hot Springs Pool is the world’s largest outdoor mineral hot springs pool. Measuring 405 feet long (comparable to the size of a football field), the pool contains more than one million gallons of water.

In 1905, the Hotel Colorado served as the temporary White House for President Teddy Roosevelt during his three-week hunting expedition.

Completed in 1992, at a cost of nearly 500 million dollars and 12 years of labor, the Glenwood Canyon project was called the “Crowning Jewel in the Interstate System.” Its environmentally conscious design honors the landscape it traverses.

One Dream, Two Decades Later

The story behind infinite family fun at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park By Mandy Gauldin Glenwood Caverns gave its first cave tour in May 1999, more than 82 years after the Fairy Caves closed to the public during World War I. Twenty years ago, Steve and Jeanne Beckley were putting the final touches on the substantial improvement projects that made it possible to open the Glenwood Caverns and the Historic Fairy Caves to the public for the first time in 82 years. They’d spent the previous months working with volunteers to grade and gravel a road to the cave entrance, clear debris that had collected for decades, rewire and install lighting, carve a new tunnel into the mountain and install two airtight doors to form an airlock that protects the temperature and humidity inside the cave. Their first tour was during Memorial Weekend in 1999, the realization of a dream 18 years in the making. Steve Beckley, a petroleum engineer and graduate of the Colorado School of Mines, read about the Fairy Caves in 1982 in an out-of-print book about Colorado caves. He wrote to Pete Prebble, the owner at that time, and expressed his interest in visiting the closed cave for 11 years before he and then-girlfriend Jeanne were allowed in. It was such a remarkable experience that they spent the next six years persuading him to lease the property and then, after quitting their jobs in Denver and moving to Glenwood Springs with their newborn son, spent a year preparing to open. “I remember telling Jeanne at the time that we’d give cave tours during the summer and then relax, ski, and play the rest of the year,” Steve Beckley, who now co-owns Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park with his wife Jeanne, explains. “Well, that’s not exactly how it went. Jeanne knows ‘I have an idea’ is probably my favorite phrase and that I say it a lot.” More than 33,000 people toured the caved in five months that year. The company had to

Now a Glenwood Caverns adventure Park employee, Alexander Tucker was one of the first to ride the original tram in 2003 at age 10 with his brother Andrew and owner Jeanne Beckley.

close during the rest of the year due to the winding road that was impassible in the winter and spring months. Steve began working on a new transportation system to keep the tours open year-round; in 2003 the Iron Mountain Tramway opened, and the company changed its name to Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. Since then, it has grown to include thrill rides, family-friendly attractions, live music, shopping, dining and, as of this year, the new high-speed Glenwood Gondola that can transport 1,000 people per hour up and down the mountain. “We never imagined that 20 years later that we’d be operating the only mountain-top theme park in America, with roller coasters and a giant swing and concerts under the stars,” co-owner Jeanne Beckley said. “It’s been such an incredible process. Our boys have grown up here, and the park has become this special place where families can have fun, learn about nature, experience this spectacular cave and create memories together.” Education was a primary goal of the Beckleys when they first opened the cave in 1999. According to Steve, “We were, and still are, so overwhelmed by the beauty of this world beneath our feet that we wanted to share it with as many people as possible while still protecting the natural resource. Teaching our guests about the history and geology of the area, the life forms within the cave and the importance of conservation has always been at the forefront of our business.” Since that first tour, more than a million people have toured Glenwood Caverns and the Historic Fairy Caves. The park offers affordable field trips for thousands of students every year, providing the opportunity to share the science and experience of exploring to even more young people, many of whom might not have the chance to do so otherwise. glenwoodcham-

The combination of the altitude in Glenwood Springs and soaking in hot water can dehydrate you pretty quickly during the summer. Drink plenty of fluids. We have bottle filling stations in the bathhouse and ice water in the café. Take frequent breaks and find some shade or cool down at the Rejuvenation Station, our outdoor waterfall showers. A hat will help keep you safe from the sun as well.

Step into one of 16 soaking pools filled with pure, thermal mineral water. A quiet zone surrounds these pools to ensure a peaceful setting. Each pool is a little different, with temperatures ranging from 98 to 108°F, and all are tucked into the riverbank with mountain views that soothe and inspire. Children younger than 5 are not allowed in the soaking pools; those 5 to 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

All ages are welcome in the Family Pool, which is filled with fresh water that’s kept at approximately 93°F. A gently curving ramp provides accessibility. Parents can watch their kids play from a jetted spa, kept at about 103°F, that rests on the edge of the family pool with the calming sounds of a waterfall in the background.

The Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves

The Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves has a unique source of “Healing Waters” in their geothermal vapor caves. First discovered and used by the Ute Tribe of Native Americans, this “magical” healing source was a part of their tribal ceremonies. The underground geothermal caves were soon adopted by the residents of the newly established town of Defiance, later named Glenwood Springs. These are the only known natural vapor caves in North America. Their soothing waters became very popular to visitors and locals and became a part of Mr. Walter Devereux’s property, which included the Hotel Colorado and the Hot Springs Pool. In 1893, the now developed cave #3 on the north side of the Colorado River, was opened with a new spa building and boasted electric lights to light the shadowy depths of the three large underground rock chambers. Locally quarried marble benches were installed for the comfort of the paying guests. The soothing steam is rich in sulphur, nitrate, zinc, potassium and 30 other therapeutic minerals. Body treatments are often combined with a steam in the caves or a soak in a natural geothermal mineral bath. Massage, body treatments, facials and a full line of AVEDA salon services are offered. » yampahspa.com

What’s the

Behind it? HOW IT WAS FORMED

Hanging Lake was formed by a geological fault, which caused the lake bed to drop away from the valley floor above. Over the years, water flowing over Bridal Veil Falls has deposited dissolved carbonates to build up the fragile lake edge. Because of its uniqueness, the area was designated a National Natural Landmark by the Secretary of the Interior in 2011.

Protecting a National Natural Landmark for Generations to Come Reservations required to hike Hanging Lake Hanging Lake was designated a National Natural Landmark by the Secretary of the Interior in 2011. Since then, its popularity has continued to increase, leading to adverse effects on the ecological health of the trail and the lake, and overcrowding that greatly diminished the experience. It is the hope of the Forest Service, through an extensive management plan, that these changes will protect this natural wonder for generations to come. A percentage of the money collected for reservations will be reinvested into the long-term stewardship and sustainability of the Hanging Lake experience. The implementation of the shuttle and permit systems will protect the unique ecological health of the lake and the trail, and improve the visitor experience, while continuing to support the local tourism economy. No dogs and/or other pets are allowed on the Hanging Lake Trail or at the Hanging Lake Welcome Center.

Sidewalk Art Patti Rock Star, owner of High Country Gems and Minerals, was at the Tucson Rock Show five years ago. She went to buy a bag of geodes from a friend’s booth when she came across a rare 7-pointed Star Geode. Prior to acquiring it, she and her friend Jeannie painted a 7-pointed star on the sidewalk in front of the store. Coincidence or not, Patty believes she is meant to share this geological wonder with everyone who walks into her door, including the mailman. Doc Holliday Muesum at Bullock's The Doc Holliday Museum is in the lower level of Bullock’s Store, located at 732 Grand Ave. In 1887, Doc died in the Hotel Glenwood which was formerly at the same location. A 1945 fire destroyed the hotel, but the only wooden beam and original stone walls that survived the fire can be viewed at the museum. The Doc Holliday Museum is the first satellite museum for the Glenwood Springs Historical Society.

Historic Bar at Juicy Lucy’s It’s believed that the historic western bar located inside Juicy Lucy’s was built in the late 1800’s and was originally housed in an establishment in Leadville, Colorado. The bar was restored to its original glory by master woodcarver Samuel Gonzales.

DEFIANCE COMMUNITY PLAYERS:

Starting in the early 1970s, Larry and Sheila Mincer, Pete and Jackie Cabrinha and Don Vanderhoof began performing melodramas for entertainment. The cast and crew were all volunteers, holding regular day jobs and performing in the evenings. Marti Duprey added with a laugh that they were very excited when the basement was turned into the dressing room because it was beginning to get cold in the alley where they were changing. In the mid-1980s the company was renamed Defiance Community Players. Over the years, there have been many productions. They are a true community theater group, and many families have grown up with Defiance. The productions, now held annually in November, have raised thousands of dollars over the years for the Ivy Adler Memorial Scholarship, which is given to students pursuing the performing arts.

Wurlitzer Player Piano at Glenwood Vaudeville Revue The 1918 Wurlitzer photoplayer is a highlight of the show and believed to be one of only 100 still in existence. The first moving pictures were essentially a series of still photos, and when the “stops” on the piano were pulled, they would provide sounds such as flute, cello, bass, train whistles, etc.

Your S tory Begins with a Good Night's Sleep…

What’s the Hotel Colorado Renovation Surprise Four original fireplaces were discovered during recent renovations at the Hotel Colorado. Two of the fireplaces were found in the Roosevelt Room, one in the Gallery Room and one in the Taft Room. While the face of one fireplace in the Roosevelt Room was chiseled off, the other three were intact. The hotel plans to restore the fireplace in the Gallery Room. However, when the Navy occupied the hotel the rest of the fireplace flues were filled with concrete.

REST YOUR HEAD AND DREAM BIG DREAMS With so much to do in Glenwood Springs, you’re going to need a good night’s sleep. Choose from over 60 lodging establishments ranging from locally owned mom and pop motels and quaint B&Bs to well-known brands and the famous Grande Dame of the Rockies. Whether you prefer to sleep under the stars or under luxurious thread counts, you’ll be relaxed and ready for the next day.

Behind it?

Clock at Hotel Denver This clock was transported to Aspen, Colorado, via stagecoach over Independence Pass in approximately 1881, by a jeweler named E.L. Peyser. After passing through several hands, it was subsequently purchased for $35 in 1906 by A.W. Kendrick, the original builder of the Star Hotel, which is now the Hotel Denver.

The less serious side of the story

How often do we get the opportunity to enjoy the company of others, laugh and share stories? Earlier this year, we invited a group to get together to do just that. Here are just a few of the stories we captured that evening. SWEET JANE

Dean Kinkel

As avid skiers, my family spent many weekends on Colorado’s Western Slope, with Glenwood Springs as our regular Spring Break destination. Naturally, I brought my college friends to Glenwood Springs for spring break our senior year. After skiing, we visited Doc Holliday’s Saloon for some après drinks, where we met a lovely dreadlocked, mountain hippy named “Sweet Jane.” Jane told us that the Utes believed the magical powers of the valley will forever bring you back, unless you take a part of the valley with STAMPEDE DOWN GRAND AVENUE you. While leaving the next day, my friends all By Mike Gamba grabbed a rock to take a piece of the valley with In 1950 my dad, Jerome Gamba, had just them. They asked if I was going to grab one, and graduated from Glenwood Springs High School. I remember saying, “No way man, I’m coming His summer job was working for Pearl “Tommy” back here!” Three years later I made Glenwood Thomson, a true woman of the Wild West. my home and have been here ever since. She was the proprietor of Outfitters for Trail Riders SOAP BOX DERBY

Bill Barnes

In 1948, Bill Barnes built a soap box car for the Soap Box Derby in a space loaded with black widow spiders. The race started at 11th Street, and they raced down Grand Ave. to the bridge. He built the car with special brakes and steering, and he was confident it was engineered to win the race. During the race, he couldn’t figure out why he wasn’t winning. As it turns out, his breaks were on the entire way, and someone from Leadville won instead. SEWER SMELL

Phil and Joan Anderson

Phil and Joan Anderson owned Hested’s Variety Store in Glenwood Springs for many years. Prior to that, they moved seven times in seven years. Upon their move to Glenwood Springs, Joan told Phil she was done moving around and wanted to settle. As they entered town from the Glenwood Canyon, she said, “What a pity that they put a sewer at the entrance to Glenwood Springs.” At the time she didn’t realize that the smell was actually Sulphur from the hot springs. glenwoodchamber.com

of the Wilderness, which provided trail rides for city slickers mainly from the East Coast. The rides were a full two weeks long and took riders through the Maroon Bells and Snowmass Wilderness. My dad and his sister Loyette worked as wranglers for Tommy. At the end of the season that year, my dad and Loyette were tasked with moving the herd−some 80 head of horses−down the valley to their winter pasture in Glenwood Springs. When the herd reached 14th St., where the high school was and still is in Glenwood Springs, they started peeling off to graze on the lush green grass and tasty flowers growing in people’s front yards. My dad realized the situation could quickly become a problem for the wranglers. He signaled his sister with a whistle. With Loyette at the front and my dad at the rear, they got the horses moving at a dead run down Grand Avenue and over the Grand Avenue Bridge, to their pasture on Laurel St. in North Glenwood. As far as anyone knows, this is the last time a herd of horses stampeded down Glenwood’s main drag. According to Jerome, “It was amazing that no one was killed that day!”

100 Years of Building Business and Community

The Story Behind the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association

HISTORY OF THE CHAMBER

Founded on April 14, 1919, the Glenwood Springs Chamber of Commerce was renamed the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association (GSCRA) in the 1980s to reflect tourism as the main economic driver. The first organizational meeting was chaired by Mayor Darrow. Congressmen Taylor was in attendance, E.E. Lucas was selected as the first chair and Carleton L. Hubbard was chosen as secretary. According to Carleton L. Hubbard’s son, Carleton “Hub” Hubbard, “When Dad started as secretary, he ran Garfield County Abstract Company inside the Hotel Glenwood Springs where the Bluebird Café is now. They paid him $15 per month as a salary and to use the office to display brochures. It was the first visitor center.” Though they weren’t married at the time, Hub’s mom Ada Hutchings also worked at the office. Coincidently she was the Strawberry Queen in 1915. Since 1919, the GSCRA has provided quality programs and services to drive the

economic prosperity and sustainability of the community. For the past 100 years, the chamber has been a champion for a thriving community, a convener of leaders and influencers to get things done and a catalyst for sustainable business growth and development. This 100th anniversary is an important milestone for the GSCRA, but it’s truly a celebration of the entire community. In addition to the timeline which provides a brief snapshot of the past 100 years, these stories behind the Glenwood Canyon project, Colorado Mountain College, the Pedestrian Mall and Strawberry Days are just a few examples of what can happen when strong community spirit is mixed with vision, leadership and collaboration. As this theme continues, imagine what Glenwood Springs will be like 100 years from now.

A 22-Minute Film Changes Everything

The Story Behind the Glenwood Canyon Project “Each morning the beauty of the rising sun casts her golden rays on the majestic cliffs of Glenwood Canyon awakening us all to one of the most beautiful sites in all America.” This is the text that reads on the opening scene of the 1971 “I-70: Where and How” film, which Floyd Diemoz says ultimately provided a solution for the design of the highway through Glenwood Canyon that we enjoy today. From start to finish, the Glenwood Canyon highway project took 29 years. Formal hearings began in 1963, and the grand opening was held October 14, 1992. Controversy began to build in the late 60s over damages caused to the canyon by the standard cut-and-fill road construction from Glenwood to the west tunnels. Some even questioned whether the canyon was the best route for the four-lane highway. Challenging the status quo led to a major turning point in the early 70s. Jim Rose, Ed Mulhall, Jerry Brown and

Europe. Local architect Dean Moffat was in Italy, and he sent the group 35 mm slides of the Autostrada bridges in Northern Italy and Austria that were used in their film. To effectively communicate that there was a better option, the committee decided to produce a film. Diemoz recalled with a laugh that they told Dean Vogelaar, director of the chamber of commerce at the time, “We want you to approve the film, but we’re not going to let you have any input in it until we're done. Then you can see it.” Vogelaar was very supportive and said ok. Diemoz said, “As far as filmmakers and producers, we were total neophytes.” They didn’t even have a camera, so they enlisted the help of Jim Coleman, an 18-year old Colorado Mountain College photography student. After a bumpy start, the film was finally completed in August 1971 and shown at an informal meeting at the Hotel Denver. Naysayers thought the film was impressive, but that design would never happen. It did happen. The four-lane

Floyd Diemoz was born in Glenwood Springs in 1937, and became publicly involved with the design of Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon through a letter he penned to the Glenwood Post in July 1965, where he expressed concern about maintaining recreational access to the rivers. This led to his 30-year involvement in the project, and on October 14, 1992, Diemoz officiated the grand opening ceremony and gave the keynote address on the history of the magnificent Glenwood Canyon project. Floyd Diemoz, who were members of the Chamber’s Transportation Committee at the time, believed that not only was the Glenwood Canyon the most logical route, but the highway could be designed and built in a way that preserved the beauty and recreational assets of the canyon. highway was routed from Gypsum to Glenwood Springs through the Glenwood Canyon, utilizing the segmented construction process shown in the film. At his grand opening address on October 14, 1992, Floyd Diemoz remarked “My friends, we have preserved the gift God has so graciously bestowed upon us. Glenwood Canyon remains one of the most beautiful sites in all America.”

What’s the

Behind it? THE FIRST STRAWBERRY DAY

Strawberry Days is the oldest, continuously held civic celebration west of the Mississippi. Started by the Tri-County Farmer’s Union, the first Strawberry Day was June 18, 1898. The intention was to promote some of the state’s finest fruits, vegetables, and dairy products produced in the region. Local farmers donated strawberries and fresh cream and local ladies baked cakes to serve to nearly 2,000 people from across the state who attended the celebration. There were flower arrangements on display at the opera house on “Riverfront.” Attendees danced to the music of the Colorado Midland Band at Eighth St. and Grand Ave.

Grand Marshals of the 2018 Strawberry Days Parade, John and Marianne Virgili. As President & CEO of the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association for 32 years, Marianne oversaw Strawberry Days among many other contributions to the community. Her husband, John, volunteered countless hours for the event as well.

Community Tradition The Story Behind Strawberry Days It’s a weekend when many kids and grandchildren come home, and there are often high school reunions organized around the event. Many visitors return year after year to their home away from home. It’s a celebration of Glenwood Springs where many

different lasting memories are created. As one might imagine, it takes a lot of people to help put together the community’s largest event, including service clubs, volunteers, sponsors, various city departments and many others.

Childhood friends, Terry and Debbie, both graduated from Glenwood Springs High School in 1977 and 1978 respectively. Terry joined the police department in 1984 and Debbie started working at Alpine Bank, longtime sponsor of the festival in 1994. Conversation with Longtime Locals Terry Wilson and Debbie Lundin What do you remember about Strawberry Days as a kid? According to Terry, it was much smaller when they were kids. The big deal was getting strawberries and ice cream followed by the carnival at Vogelaar Park. Terry recalled getting sick on the rides, especially The Octopus. Hindsight is 20-20, but maybe hot dogs and ice cream were not the best pre-carnival choice. Besides the namesake treats, they both agreed that the parade was probably the most memorable aspect of Strawberry Days. Having been instrumental in making sure the parade and festival runs smoothly every year for the past 30 years or so, Terry also recalled that he once rode in a float for Rocky and Bencie Baros’ Karate Club. “When we stopped at the judging station where the Forest Service building is now, I had to break two cement blocks, then on we went to the park for a karate demonstration.” Debbie added, “When I was a kid, I was in the parade with Wendy’s Majorettes. We all had batons and would throw them up in the air, but only a few of us could catch them.” Debbie just celebrated 25 years with Alpine Bank, a major Strawberry Days sponsor for many years. She said that the parade has always provided a great venue for competition among local businesses. She even has a toilet seat in her office from the toilet seat drill team brigade that the bank did one year in response to a lawn chair brigade that another company did the year before. Both Terry and Debbie recall very elaborate floats. There was a lot of chicken wire and napkins involved, and they said all the kids helped with the construction. When asked about their memories at Sayre Park, Terry’s most vivid memory is Jeannine Ford-Artaz with a podium in the middle of the basketball court. “As kids we thought it was fun to unplug the chords from Jeannine’s sound system without getting caught,” he said. One thing will certainly never change, kids will be kids.

Strawberry Days is held the third Friday, Saturday and Sunday in June. The festival features live music and main stage entertainment, the crowning of Miss Strawberry Days, Family Fest and a parade down Grand Avenue. Free strawberries and ice cream are served after the parade at Sayre Park.

Strawberry Queen to Miss Universe Contest and High School Sweethearts Reunited In 1955 Mary Linda Clapham was crowned Glenwood’s Strawberry Queen. At the time, the National Strawberry Queen contest was hosted here, for which she also took the crown. She graduated from Garfield County High School, attended Colorado A&M and took modeling classes. She then became the first and only young woman from Glenwood Springs to become Miss Colorado in the Miss Universe Contest. She went on to train quarter horses and showed horses from her ranch on the Eastern Slope. At a 45th high school reunion, Glenn Vawter and Mary Linda renewed their high school friendship, were married a year later and returned home to Glenwood Springs. Mary Linda assisted with Miss Strawberry Days in recent years.

Keeping History Alive The Strawberry Days story is cherished by the Frontier Historical Society and is on display year-round at Sayre (Strawberry) Park near the basketball court. A monument is also there that names the winners of the National Strawberry Queen contest and a plaque that is updated with the names of each Strawberry Days Queen since. Floyd Diemoz and Glenn Vawter put up the display in the park including the granite piece that was lost for years and found buried outside a real estate office where it was used to divert water coming off the roof. Cindy Hines at the Historical Society was very instrumental in putting together the display. About every two years, Glenn updates the list of Queens and repaints the display holder. There Really Ought to Be a College Here

The Story Behind Colorado Mountain College By Doug Stewart “It all started with an empty file folder,” recalled David Delaplane. In 1962, Delaplane was settling in to his new office as manager of the Glenwood Springs Chamber of Commerce. He came across a folder titled “Education Committee” that had nothing in it, except for some names. He thought to himself, “There really ought to be a college here.” He contacted the people listed and resurrected the committee. A property valuation of $60 million was required by the state of Colorado to set up a junior college taxing district. It took five counties to meet the requirements: EDUCATION Garfield, Pitkin, Eagle, Lake and Summit. The plan had to go to the voters, so the committee had to promote it. “Night after night for a year,” Delaplane explained, “we traveled miles to meet with every service group in every community to show everyone how important it was to have a junior college.” Their late nights paid off. In November 1965, by a margin of more than 2 to 1, voters in the five counties approved the formation of the junior college district that would become home to Colorado Mountain College. Delaplane was elected to the first Governing Committee of the college in January 1966. The college opened in 1967 after simultaneously building two original campuses: Spring Valley south of Glenwood and in Leadville. Today, Colorado Mountain College serves over 20,000 students per year in 11 locations, and offers bachelor’s degrees.

The Spirit of Community: The Common Thread That Unites All The Story Behind The Pedestrian Mall By Manette Anderson “Kids these days… what will they think they can accomplish next?” reads the headline from the January 24,1994, Glenwood Post Independent Editor’s Opinion column. In it the editor extols the accomplishments of a small group of high school students that joined with the chamber and other community mentors in a four-year project leading to the “enjoyable walking and shopping area unmarred by traffic…” that is what is now known as the Pedestrian Mall on the west side of the Grand Avenue bridge. Did you know that your beautiful walkway was envisioned and fought for by students? It was not only the impetus for what you enjoy today but garnered recognition from state and national organizations. This project was nominated for a National Points of Light Award by Governor Roy Romer, acknowledged by President Bill Clinton, COMMUNITY and was the recipient of the National Philanthropy Day Award. Yes, NATIONAL. The Chamber has a file jammed with all the newspaper clippings from all over the state covering the four years from conception to construction. In 1996, when the first citizens walked on the completed mall, we were ALL so proud. And did you know that it was because of your chamber’s dedication to the future leaders of our community that these students were able to enjoy professional mentorships? Architects, builders, landscapers, economists, and chamber members all joined in the vision. Business after business gave money and in-kind donations that led to the students raising $75,000 (50% more than the City required to build the pedestrian area.) Many community members fought right along with those students through very contentious meetings. Engraved bricks were sold to help raise the money for the construction and to memorialize community citizens and businesses that “got it.” Thank you to our chamber and its members for another example of their steadfast vision to make our town the best and to ensure future leaders would have the skills needed to succeed. Manette Anderson was the Service Learning teacher at Glenwood Springs High School who helped spearhead the Pedestrian Mall project.

(Above rendering) COMING SOON! The enhanced 7th Street extends from the west side of the pocket park adjacent to Slope and Hatch to Cooper Ave. It also includes Bethel Plaza, underneath the Grand Ave. Bridge. This collaborative project with the City of Glenwood Springs and the Downtown Development Authority creates a destination pedestrian environment, providing space for community events and additional space for dining and enjoyment.

Strengthening and Enhancing the Downtown Experience The Story Behind the Bethel Plaza

In February, City Council voted to rename the plaza area under the Grand Avenue Bridge in honor of former Downtown Development Authority Director, Leslie Bethel and her significant contributions to a vibrant and successful downtown. Under Leslie’s leadership, the Downtown Development Authority accomplished major initiatives, resulting in new economic opportunities for Glenwood Springs. Her vision and leadership ensured that details—such as brick, flagstone and ironwork—were integrated into the overall Grand Avenue Bridge design for the vehicle and pedestrian bridges. These decorative details were designed with Glenwood Springs’ context and character in mind. The renaming of the plaza to Bethel Plaza will be formalized at a ceremony later this year following the completion of construction in the area, including the 7th Street festival street. “As director of the DDA, I was focused on strengthening and enhancing the downtown experience through infrastructure, beautification, pedestrian connections, maintaining views and river corridors. This also means maintaining continuity in design through the district,” Leslie Bethel stated in a press release announcing her retirement in late 2018. “The Grand Avenue Bridge design was largely influenced by the role the DDA took in the design process and partnerships to achieve an appropriate contextual design.” Leslie passed away on December 11, 2018.

ATHENA Honors Professional Excellence, Community Service

Glenwood’s ‘mother of dance,’ Maurine Taufer was honored as the 2019 ATHENA recipient. Instrumental in bringing the first children’s dance program to Colorado Mountain College in the early 1980s and co-founder of Dancers Dancing in 1993, Maurine has impacted hundreds of youth and multiple generations in the community. Her enthusiasm and love for dance and the arts are instilled in her students. Upon the closure of the Art Center, she collaborated with Colorado Mountain College to ensure dance programming would continue in the community.

ATHENA Young Professional recipient, Kati Ledall, is the volunteer coordinator at Valley View Hospital, where she coordinates over 100 volunteers in multiple departments. She also helped develop the No One Dies Alone program, where volunteers sit with patients in their final hours. Kati serves on the board of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, is a Sunday School teacher at New Creation Church, and is a mentor for the Glenwood Springs High School Capstone Program.

What's the Story behind it? 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE GLENWOOD SPRINGS CHAMBER

Since 1994, the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association has participated in the prestigious ATHENA International program, which was developed to support and honor women leaders and those who inspire them to reach their full potential. In 2008, the GSCRA honored the first ATHENA Young Professional. Inspired by the goddess of Greek mythology known for her strength, courage, wisdom and enlightenment– these qualities are embodied in the ATHENA Leadership Model. The award is unique in both scope—local, national and international—and the ATHENA mission upon which it is based. The ATHENA Leadership & ATHENA YP Awards are presented to women or men who are honored for professional excellence, community service, and for actively assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills. glenwoodchamber.com

Conversation with: Carleton "HUB" Hubbard Ian Exelbert, Blake – Age 17 Braden – Age 15 Garrett – Age 13 Tyler – Age 9

Carleton “Hub” Hubbard and Ian Exelbert have some things in common including the Glenwood Springs Chamber, Glenwood Insurance Agency and living and raising a family in Glenwood Springs. Hub’s dad, Carleton L. Hubbard was the first secretary of the Glenwood Springs Chamber of Commerce when it was formed in 1919. The same year, Hub’s dad purchased Glenwood Insurance Agency, and Hub later joined him in 1948 where he ran the abstract side of the business. They sold it to Walt Thrall in the 1970s. Hub and his wife, Mim, raised their family in Glenwood Springs. Born in Florida, Ian Exelbert considers Glenwood Springs home. He’s the current chair of the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association Board of Directors, and he’s Owner/COO of Glenwood Insurance Agency. Ian and his wife, Niechelle, are raising their family in Glenwood Springs. A conversation with Hub, Ian and four of Ian’s sons ages 9 to 17, helped connect the past to the future. A ride on the Glenwood Gondola, inspired conversations about what it’s like to live in Glenwood Springs, how it has changed and what it might be like 100 years from now. Although the town’s footprint has grown and the population has increased HUB over the past 100 years, everyone agreed that it’s a great place to live. Abundant activities and an appreciation for small-town living were common themes. According to 17-year old Blake, “Growing up in Glenwood Springs is a privilege. Glenwood is filled with thousands of people who care so much about this town, which makes it unique.” Discussing what it might be like 100 years from now, growth and the evolution of technology were focus. 9-year old Tyler says, “There will be a lot of machines and a lot of robots that can do things for you.” His 15-year-old brother Braden added, “I feel that Glenwood will keep growing and adding more. More and more people will end up living here because of the location, weather, mountains and views.”

“I love the nature and culture of the people that live in Glenwood. They are positive and Glenwood is such a small community that you meet new people every day. And Glenwood is a great place to learn how close of a community we are.”

BLAKE

“I love how you can go out and do anything ”

GARRETT

How small and nice the community is. There’s not much violence, and there are many nice people. It’s not so crowded like a city, and not anywhere near as much traffic!”

BRADEN
