Dear Reader, It’s easy to get caught in the daily grind. Like a computer with too many programs running at once, we humans can get bogged down the same way. Occasionally, we simply need to “hit refresh.” Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong resident, Glenwood Springs offers plenty of ways to reset. Sometimes all it takes is a short hike or a quick dip in the hot springs to clear the mind. Other times, a week-long vacation away from the day-to-day is in order. For this edition of the “Insider’s Guide” we asked a few locals to share a day in their lives. You’ll learn about a retired couple who enjoy life to its fullest as though every day is a Saturday and a young professional who manages to fill in a full day of activities with work in between. A group of ladies plan the perfect “girls day,” and a family gives inside tips for a full day of fun. Whatever the journey that brought them to Glenwood Springs, the unique thing about the people who live here is that they enjoy the same wonderful activities and attractions as visitors. You’ll see locals soaking in one of our hot springs or taking turns at Sunlight Mountain Resort. A daily hike or bike ride is the norm, and they also struggle with deciding between our incredible restaurants. Some say they came here for a vacation and stayed for the lifestyle. Not only is this an amazing place to recreate, it’s a great place to raise a family and an ideal place to retire. Glenwood Springs boasts of an award-winning hospital, quality schools and many other fantastic amenities one might not expect to find in a community of this size. Thoroughly enjoys all that Glenwood Springs has to offer. They especially love to share the fun with extended family and friends when they come to town. After their recent visit, their extended family is already planning their next trip to Glenwood Springs!

8:00 a.m. Rosi’s for breakfast With so many activities planned, we like to start the day off right. The locally- owned, family-friendly restaurant never disappoints. Some of our favorites are the Eggs Benedict, Belgium waffle or Schnitzel & Eggs.

2:00 p.m. A quick float down the Colorado River

6:00 p.m. Dinner at the Grind

8:00 p.m. Glenwood Hot Springs Pool

A couple of hours at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park-kids of any age and adults will enjoy a trip up the mountain. The rides are fun, the views are spectacular, and the staff is friendly.

What a great way to get some sun and have a great time while doing it! Here you will see many personal rafts full of other locals who often know each other and will socialize at many of the spots on the side of the river. Local rafting companies cater trips for the thrill seekers and calmer rides for families.

Our family loves to choose from several “burger” options, salads, numerous beers, and a side of the best brussels sprouts in town. Appealing to adults but is also kid-friendly with their arcade game room.

Finish off the night at the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool. After a long and fun day, soaking is a great way to wind down, soothe tired muscles and think about what the next day will bring.

Local Tip: When possible opt for the yearly pass at the attraction locations such as the Glenwood Caverns, Iron Mountain Hot Springs, Community Center, Sunlight Mountain Resort and Glenwood Hot Springs Pool. This allows you to visit multiple times and save money in the long run. 22 Hit Refresh…

The Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves

Celebrates 125 Years “These are the only known natural vapor caves in North America.”

The Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves celebrates 125 years as a unique source of “Healing Waters” in their geothermal vapor caves. First discovered and used by the Ute Tribe of Native Americans, this “magical” healing source was a part of their tribal ceremonies as well as a source of healing. The underground geothermal caves were soon adopted by the residents of the newly established town of Defiance, later named Glenwood Springs. These are the only known natural vapor caves in North America. Their soothing waters became very popular to visitors and locals and became a part of Mr. Walter Devereux’s property, which included the Hotel Colorado and the Hot Springs Pool.

glenwoodchamber.com

In 1893, the now developed cave #3 on the north side of the Colorado River was opened with a new spa building and boasted electric lights to light the shadowy depths of the three large underground rock chambers. Locally quarried marble benches were installed for the comfort of the paying guests. This facility became a part of Mr. Walter Devereux’s property which included the Hotel Colorado and The Hot Springs Pool. In 1990, a modern renovation of the Spa area was completed under private ownership. Further additions to the Spa area continue to be developed. Strawberry Days It's the Berries! And it Spans 120 Years

The oldest festival in Colorado and maybe the oldest west of the Mississippi. It started in 1898 as a celebration of the local strawberry harvest. While the strawberry fields didn’t last forever, Strawberry Days rocked on. Highlights are an impressive Main Stage line-up and FamilyFest with interactive and entertaining experiences for the kids, an arts and crafts fair and food court and a parade down Grand Avenue. Afterwards we serve up free strawberries, just like we’ve been doing for the past century. Admission to the park is free. Third Friday-Sunday in June. »strawberrydays.com

The weather this spring has allowed Pat to make a choice. Ski or golf? Pat chooses golf and heads to his second home, the Glenwood Springs Golf Course, known to the locals as “The Hill. ” Meanwhile, Bonnie is painting, which she’s committed to doing for two hours per day. She’s in the artistic flow, so don’t call her, she won’t answer.

5:00 p.m. Après Golf at The Hill Bonnie heads to the Hill to meet Pat and his buddies for a beer and to see some friends to get caught up on what’s happening in the ‘hood. Neither is in the mood to cook dinner, so they settle for bar snacks.

7:00 p.m. Pickleball and Relax It’s pickleball night for Bonnie! An amazing fun game, Bonnie has met new friends and continues to work on improving her game. Pat enjoys time in the garage re-shafting a golf club, then catching up on his favorite TV series ( Justified, Bosch or Longmire) in his recliner.

WALTER DEVEREUX’S DREAM STILL LIVES – 125 YEARS LATER KNOWN AS THE “GRANDE DAME” OF THE ROCKIES AND A CULTURAL ICON, THE HOTEL COLORADO OPENED ITS DOORS IN JUNE OF 1893.

Modeled after Villa De Medici in Italy, newspapers at the time described the spectacular hotel as a “marvel of the age” and the “finest resort hotel between the Great Lakes and the Pacific.” The Hotel Colorado’s originator, Walter Devereux, dreamed of creating a world class resort in Glenwood Springs. Devereux brought hydroelectric power to Glenwood Springs, establishing the Glenwood Light & Power Company. He later developed the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, the Yampah Vapor Caves and the Hotel Colorado. These three businesses are still thriving and the Glenwood Light & Power Company is now the Glenwood Springs Utilities Department. Entering their 125th year of operation, the Hotel Colorado is planning for some impressive property upgrades. September 15, 2018 – All-day community party! Celebrating the 125-year legacy of Walter Devereux’s Vision to create a luxurious resort and a world-class spa in Glenwood Springs. »hotelcolorado.com

We know you’d go to the ends of the earth to find the very best cancer care. But you don’t have to. The Calaway•Young Cancer Center brings world-class cancer care to the Western Slope. From imaging, medical, surgical and radiation oncology, chemotherapy, and supportive and integrative services, our patients are met by skilled physicians and support staff through every step of their cancer journey. Patients both in and outside of our community choose Valley View as their cancer partner for a variety of reasons. Perhaps it’s our expert oncologists, or the state-of-the-art technologies used in treatment. Or perhaps it’s our complimentary integrative therapies, or maybe it’s our inspiring mountains and restorative hot springs that bring peace of mind. Whatever your reasons, Valley View has the resources to guide you through your cancer journey. Since our inception, our goal has been to support patients through every stage of cancer care, from diagnosis to treatment to follow-up visits. We collaborate with neurology, pulmonology, heart and vascular, and plastic and reconstructive surgery, to help us deliver individualized and effective cancer management. Perhaps what our patients have appreciated most is our expanded integrated services, including programs designed to support mind, body and spirit with massage, acupuncture, therapeutic touch, aromatherapy and other holistic treatments to promote healing. 68 Hit Refresh…

Typically consists of a lunch meeting, whether it is with a potential client, the Chamber Ambassadors or the Kiwanis New Member committee. Every so often, I get to have lunch with Betty and a book in my backyard.

5:15 p.m. Walk Dog Head home and take Betty down to the dog park so she can play with her doggy friends and wade in the Roaring Fork.

Local Tip: Wednesday nights are for music in the park! Grab a six pack, pack a picnic and meet some friends at Two Rivers for great music and beautiful views. 72 Hit Refresh…

There are so many activities right out my back door that sometimes it’s hard to choose. I love getting on the mountain bike and running laps on the Wulfsohn Trails. If I’m feeling more laid back, Betty and I will play a round of disc golf at CMC’s Spring Valley Campus. At least once a month, I spend an evening at a Roaring Fork Young Professionals event. On a weekday powder day in winter, you’ll find me skinning up Sunlight for a moonlight run. In the summer, one night per week is devoted to playing softball at Two Rivers Park. glenwoodchamber.com

The Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop was created in 2016 by five thermal hot springs destinations in western Colorado, whose tourism directors came together to form a unified marketing partnership.

From left to right: Sawyer Ross, Lily MacCachran, Kendall Knott, Ginny Bergstrom and Stephanie Kehoe.

The mountain resorts of Glenwood Springs, Ouray and Ridgway, Pagosa Springs, Chaffee County and Steamboat Springs are all physically connected along a 722-mile route, including several Colorado Scenic Byways. By putting their collective heads together, the tourism marketing leaders from these five destinations applied for a Colorado Tourism Office grant and have been awarded $25,000 to match their individual $5,000 each, for three consecutive years, thus garnering $50,000 each year to boost the loop’s collective promotional efforts. Each area has multiple hot springs facilities ranging from small intimate spas to large commercial operations. Garfield County Public Library Celebrates 80 Years

78 Hit Refresh…

In 1938, the Garfield County Public Library was first established in the New Castle school building. That single library served the entire county, as well as all of the school districts, and had a collection of roughly 14,000 books. Between 1964 and 1982, five additional locations were added to make the library branches you know and love today. Then in 2006, the voters overwhelmingly approved a 20 year, one mill property tax for construction and expansion of all six library buildings. The voters also approved the creation of the Garfield County Public Library District, which is separate from Garfield County. There have been many changes over the last 80 years. Unlike 1938, the libraries now provide a website with a plethora of tools, and each Garfield County Library provides public computers and wifi. Today there are over 190,000 books, movies, downloadable ebooks, magazines, and music CDs available locally - with millions more available through a national lending system. These are among the many additions which have made the Garfield County Libraries unique and valuable resources within the community. «gcpld.org

Grand Avenue Bridge Project community walk November 6, 2017.

he Grand Avenue Bridge (GAB) project is a 30-month construction project building a new Grand Avenue Bridge and Pedestrian Bridge.

The Grand Avenue Bridge and the Pedestrian Bridge serve as an Photo courtesy of Frontier Historical Society

important connection between downtown Glenwood Springs and the historic Hot Springs Pool, Hotel Colorado and Interstate 70. Replacing the GAB provides a longer-term solution to numerous issues, mitigates all clearance issues and best serves the public as a whole. The original traffic bridge was constructed in 1953 and was considered “functionally obsolete” by the threshold in the National Bridge Inventory. A pedestrian bridge was built adjacent to the GAB in 1985. The GAB carries State Highway 82 over 7th Street, the Union Pacific Railroad, the Colorado River, I-70, North River Street and the Glenwood Hot Springs parking lot. The new vehiclular bridge officially opened November 6, 2017.
