Dear Reader,

An ideal mountain community

We pack the car with the family, the dog and all the road trip essentials. The moment we back out of the driveway, the dog immediately falls asleep and my daughter (aka my favorite 6-year old) asks the dreaded question, “Are we there yet?”

802 Grand Avenue, Glenwood Springs, CO 81602 | PO Box 1238 (970) 945-6589 | glenwoodchamber.com

With at least three hours to go, I respond “No we just got in the car.” Her next question is, “How many towns until we get there?” By now I should know to research exactly how many towns there are between here and wherever we are going, but instead I reply enthusiastically, “Who wants to play 20 Questions?!” This classic game has kept our family occupied during excursions, even if only for 15-minute increments in between the Disney Princess soundtrack on repeat.

“Who wants to play 20 Questions?”

We all know the objective of this game: guess what the other person is thinking by asking 20 or less closed-ended questions. If you guess correctly, you get to think of something for the other weary traveler to guess.

For this magazine, I teamed up with my favorite 6-year old to help come up with “20 questions.” Let’s see if you can guess what person, place or thing we have in mind by looking at the questions on page 6. As you read through the first few questions, you probably already know the answer. You take a wild guess and ask, “Is it Glenwood Springs?” You are correct! The vision of the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association is making Glenwood Springs the ideal mountain community. While the definition of “ideal” may vary from person to person, as you read through this magazine, you may think that Glenwood Springs already is just that. Though I would agree with this assessment, how do we not only maintain greatness but continuously improve? What are we, as a community, doing now to ensure the vision of an ideal mountain community for future generations - the kids in the backseat asking if we are there yet? I’m proud to say−a lot. It is impossible not to mention that at the time of this publication, we are experiencing the COVID-19 global pandemic. Through this time of uncertainly, it has been compassion, collaboration, creativity and the love of our community that has allowed us to move forward and become stronger than ever. Although you already know that the answer to our game of 20 questions is Glenwood Springs, I hope you will play along.

Healing Hot Springs

Glenwood Hot Springs Resort The crossroads of adventure and relaxation A place that reconnects us with each other, as remote as you want it to be, and as invigorating as you can handle. A source of relaxation, exhilaration, breathtaking vistas, unlimited exploration, and geothermal waters, the iconic Glenwood Hot Springs Pool attracts visitors year-round. Spend the day splashing, playing, diving and soaking in the healing hot springs, chock full of mineral goodness. Its two enormous pools have made Glenwood Hot Springs Resort a landmark. Steamy water bubbles up from the ground at 122° F (51° C). Considered sacred to the Ute Native Americans, the source spring is called Yampah, which means Big Medicine in the Ute language. Mineral hot springs are thought to possess healing properties that are beneficial for skin, circulation and pain relief. Ultimately, a thermal soak simply feels good. When the sandstone bathhouse and pool opened in 1888, travelers from around the globe made the trek to experience this attraction. Visitors are still drawn here today. »hotspringspool.com »970-945-6571

The Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves

The Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves has a unique source of “Healing Waters” in their geothermal vapor caves. First discovered and used by the Ute Tribe of Native Americans, this “magical” healing source was a part of their tribal ceremonies. The underground geothermal caves were soon adopted by the residents of the newly established town of Defiance, later named Glenwood Springs. These are the only known natural vapor caves in North America. Their soothing waters became very popular to visitors and locals and became a part of Mr. Walter Devereux’s property, which included the Hotel Colorado and the Hot Springs Pool. In 1893, the now developed cave #3 on the north side of the Colorado River, was opened with a new spa building and boasted electric lights to light the shadowy depths of the three large underground rock chambers. Locally quarried marble benches were installed for the comfort of the paying guests. The soothing steam is rich in sulphur, nitrate, zinc, potassium and 30 other therapeutic minerals. Body treatments are often combined with a steam in the caves or a soak in a natural geothermal mineral bath. Massage, body treatments, facials and a full line of AVEDA salon services are offered. » yampahspa.com

RECREATION AND ADVENTURE

Caves play crucial roles in our lives. Glenwood Caverns and the Historic Fairy Caves by Mandy Gauldin

One of Glenwood Springs’ hidden treasures was formed millions of years ago, discovered 125 years ago and reopened to the public 21 years ago. Tucked away inside Iron Mountain at an elevation of 7,100’ above sea level, Glenwood Caverns and the Historic Fairy Caves take you underground to a world most people will never see. It’s a gateway to both our past and our future. In 1895, Charles W. Darrow found air whistling through a small hole, about an inch in diameter, in the ground on the mountain that overlooks Glenwood Springs. Rather than finding precious metals, he found what he would name the Fairy Caves. His family opened the cave to tours the following year and operated it as a tourist destination until the early 1910s. It sat empty and exposed for many years. The cave remained closed to the public until current owners Steve and Jeanne Beckley reopened it in 1999. Since then, through their careful stewardship, it has been protected from the elements and remains a living, growing cave. More than a million people have enjoyed walking tours in the Fairy Caves and King’s Row, which has the most formations of any cave room in the state and learned about the history and the importance of preserving this magnificent resource.

glenwoodchamber.com

Caves play crucial roles in our lives. In addition to providing entertainment and education to visitors, there’s scientific research taking places in caves around the world—including at Glenwood Caverns. Universities partner with privately owned caves to learn about bacteria that can play a role in cancer treatment and the development of new antibiotics. Researchers collect broken formations to track historical weather trends dating back hundreds of thousands of years and take water samples to identify changes in mineral content. Astronauts train underground, and unique species are discovered inside caves along with fossils dating back to the Ice Age. The historical and geological information found in caves is helping us prepare for our future. When the Beckleys began offering cave tours in 1999, their primary goals were to educate people about the importance of conservation and to make sure the cave remains in its pristine condition for many generations. Each year, thousands of school children visit the cave at a special low price to learn about caves, cave preservation and the roles they play in our lives.

STORIED PAST STILL ALIVE TODAY

The Famous Doc Holliday and Infamous Kid Curry in Glenwood Springs A legend of the American West, John Henry “Doc” Holliday is buried in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Western history buffs and anyone up for a short outdoor excursion can hike the Doc Holliday Trail to Linwood Cemetery to pay their respects to the dentist-turned-gambler-and-gunslinger. In addition to Doc’s marker, be sure to stop by bandit Kid Curry’s grave, as well as the tombstones of Glenwood Springs pioneers. Every year, over multiple weekends in October, the Glenwood Historical Society hosts the annual Ghost Walk at the cemetery where talented actors portray characters of Glenwood Springs’ past. Playing the Hand He Was Dealt Though Doc was trained in dentistry, he suffered from consumption, also called tuberculosis, which had no known cure at the time. Unable to practice his trade, Doc became adept at other life skills—cards and quick draw. Holliday made a living both playing and dealing Faro, but it was his skill with a six-shooter that made him famous. Tombstone & Friendship with Wyatt Earp Deputized by his friend, the sheriff Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday is best known for his involvement in the shoot-out at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, in which several members of the outlaw Clanton gang were killed. Holliday was later suspected of killing Johnny Ringo—the leader of the Cowboys gang—and a warrant was issued for his arrest. To escape the law, Doc made his way to Colorado. Though Arizona sought his extradition, Colorado state officials did not comply with the order. Holliday spent time in Denver and Leadville before landing in Glenwood Springs. Running Out of Time By the time Holliday arrived in Glenwood Springs, his health was in severe decline. He hoped the miraculous mineral hot springs and vapor caves could provide a cure, or at least offer some relief. 28 Making Glenwood Springs an ideal mountain community.

Holliday checked himself into the Hotel Glenwood Springs, which burned to the ground in 1945. Currently, it is the location of Bullocks, a western goods store, as well as the home of the Doc Holliday Museum. Operated by the Frontier Historical Museum and Society, it houses an array of artifacts, including an engraved pistol purportedly given to him by his girlfriend Big Nose Kate. Doc’s Final Days in Glenwood Springs Holliday spent the last 57 days of his life in Glenwood Springs. On November 8, 1887, he was said to have asked for a glass of whiskey, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Then, looking down at his bare feet, Doc said, “This is funny,” and died. Apparently, Doc never expected to die in bed, but rather with his boots on, succumbing to his end in a gunfight. Old West Outlaw Kid Curry Buried in Glenwood Springs Harvey Logan, most known by his alias Kid Curry, was once one of the country’s most wanted men. His story ended in Glenwood Springs where he is interred, not far from the grave marker of perhaps one of the most well-known gunfighters of all time— Doc Holliday. To visit Curry’s grave, follow the Doc Holliday Trail to Linwood Cemetery. Potter’s Field A potter’s field, is another name for paupers’ grave or common grave sites, a place for the burial of unknown, unclaimed or indigent people. Doc Holliday is presumed to be buried in the Potter’s Field portion of Linwood Cemetery, as he was penniless when he died. It is thought that his grave was left unmarked in an attempt to keep grave robbers from digging up his bones for souvenirs. Credit: visitglenwood.com

Annie's Wishing Tree

is decorated with wish ribbons. Most were placed there by Annie Zancanella who lives just down the slope. In her two battles with cancer, she found solace in tying ribbons to the tree on which she played as a child. She started putting ribbons on the tree, using them to represent her own wishes, dreams, and prayers in her fight against cancer. Now others follow her lead by leaving wish ribbons, prayer streamers and mementos for others who are challenged by health issues. You can visit the tree and place your own wish when hiking on the Doc Holliday Trail to Linwood Cemetery.

Hike Hanging Lake, the jewel of Glenwood Canyon. Reserve your spot today Hanging Lake near Glenwood Springs is a beloved, one-of-a-kind destination in Glenwood Canyon. Though steep, it’s a short hike—just under a mile—and is one of Colorado’s most popular trails for hiking, photography and even wedding proposals. It’s no wonder—the setting is drop-dead gorgeous! A crystalline lake suspended on the edge of a cliff with a backdrop of waterfalls and evergreen trees is the stuff of fairytales. For Summer 2020, new Hanging Lake Trail guidelines and adjustments include a temporary reduction in hiker capacity as well as a social distancing plan. For Hanging Lake Partners, a stakeholder group that provides guidance and input for the management of the popular hiking trail, devising an effective social distancing strategy for the ever-popular Hanging Lake Trail in Glenwood Canyon was an essential step. The temporary guidelines allowed Hanging Lake Trail to reopen for visitor enjoyment on June 1, 2020. The Hanging Lake partnership was formed in 2019 to ensure visitation to Hanging Lake could be sustainable. The partnership includes the White River National Forest, Colorado Department of Transportation, the City of Glenwood Springs, and private businesses. An Improved Hanging Lake Hiking Experience

Ongoing protection of hanging lake is provided in partnership with

glenwoodchamber.com

While the main attraction is Hanging Lake itself, take time to savor the entirety of the trail which follows Dead Horse Creek. The trail features a variety of terrain. Be prepared to scramble across boulder fields and follow the loamy trail through lush foliage, across wooden bridges and past charming rest structures. Just prior to arriving at Hanging Lake is a steep rocky section; handrails provide a balance check and a sense of security, but take care with small children. A wooden boardwalk surrounds a portion of the Lake and provides the perfect platform to admire the waterfalls, watch the fish (but don’t feed them) and snap photos. Remember, it’s important to be prepared to hike Hanging Lake and always follow Leave No Trace Care for Colorado Principals.

“This innovative partnership has stepped up once again to ensure public visitation can safely continue at this iconic Colorado destination,” said Marcia Gilles, Acting District Ranger for the Eagle Holy Cross Ranger District. Purchase Hanging Lake Hiking Permits Online Visitors can purchase permits online for $12 per person. Hikers can self-drive and park at the Hanging Lake Rest Area; alternatively, visitors can bike or hike along the Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path to the trailhead. Both permits are identical in cost and time slot inventory. All hikers will be asked to present their permit upon arrival at the Hanging Lake Rest Area; only those with permits will be allowed to park. GOLD-LEVEL RIDE CENTER

Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley is Designated a Gold-Level Ride Center by the International Mountain Bicycling Association

With more than 300 miles of high quality single-track to explore, the Roaring Fork Valley provides an incredible breadth of experiences for both local and visiting riders seeking beauty and exhilaration. The IMBA Gold-Level evaluation criteria is comprised of key aspects that make for an amazing mountain bike destination and include a variety of trail types, overall trail mileage, quality of trail experiences, destination best practices, and local services. The Roaring Fork Valley’s system of trails scored high marks in each of these categories, contributing to the IMBA Gold-Level designation. With the growth of mountain biking and its evolution into a broadly appealing sport, the communities of the Roaring Fork Valley have developed single-track trails to satisfy user demands while increasing sustainability. The Roaring Fork Valley’s public and private land managers, including the White River National Forest, the Bureau of Land Management, Pitkin County’s Open Space & Trails, Snowmass Village’s Parks & Trails, Aspen’s Parks, Open Space & Trails, Glenwood Springs Parks & Recreation, Trails & Open Space, and Aspen Skiing Company’s Snowmass Bike Park, have each studied, approved, and built additional mileage and made countless improvements to the Valley’s single-track trail system in order to attain this triumph. Each of these trail approvals was carefully considered in the context of their location. “Ride Center designations are as much about the process as the award. IMBA’s Trail Solutions team partners with the community to guide and educate on creating and enhancing amazing places to ride mountain bikes. For the Aspen Snowmass/ Roaring Fork Ride Center to grow from BronzeLevel to Gold-Level is a remarkable achievement, and a testament to the community’s dedication to mountain biking,” says Dave Wiens, IMBA Executive Director. The Roaring Fork Valley offers incredibly convenient and connected access between the five communities. The Rio Grande Trail, for example, is a surfaced pathway that connects trail users from Glenwood Springs, through Carbondale, Basalt, all the way to Aspen, 42 miles away. As riders traverse the Rio Grande Trail, they can choose from over 300 miles of easily accessed scenic terrain, from

mountainous slopes and peaks, down to the valley floor. Favorite rides near Aspen and Snowmass Village include classics like the Government and Sunnyside Trails, with newer trails at Sky Mountain Park offering a way to link the upper valley trails together into loops ranging from an hour or two, to all-day adventures. While Snowmass offers beauty and challenge in all directions, the Snowmass Bike Park’s gondola and chairlift deliver riders above 11,000’ and offer descents of over 3,000’ to arrive back at Snowmass Town Park. Exploring the middle of the valley in Basalt and Carbondale, riders can find red rock terrain and desert cactus at Red Hill, or endless aspen tree groves and massive views of the Elk Mountains range on the Hay Park Trail. Red Mountain, one of Glenwood Springs’ new favorite trail systems, includes the Grandstaff Trail where grand views of Mount Sopris meet fun flow, big vertical drops, and optional airtime. “As the entrance to the Roaring Fork Valley, Glenwood Springs offers year-round trail access with stunning views of the valley in a laid-back atmosphere,” said Lisa Langer, Director of Tourism, Visit Glenwood Springs. “This new designation will elevate our area in the eyes of serious mountain biking enthusiasts, and it will encourage riders to experience all that the Roaring Fork Valley has to offer. Of course, after a day on the trails, we recommend restoring those weary muscles at one of our famous hot springs attractions.” In addition to the Gold-Level trails, the Roaring Fork Valley is home to more than 10 bikes shops that are recognized for quality service and product, and some of the best restaurants, bars, and post-ride hangouts in the state.

WELCOMING & WALKABLE

“First and foremost, a great street should help make community… A great street should be a most desirable place to be, to spend time, to live, to play, to work… Streets are settings for activities that bring people together.” —from Great Streets by Allan Jacobs (1995)

WELCOMING & WALKABLE

Purposeful Placemakers Building cities for people. Walkable, liveable spaces. By Laura Kirk The enhanced 7th Street extends from the west side of the pocket park adjacent to Slope and Hatch to Cooper Ave. It also includes Bethel Plaza, underneath the Grand Ave. Bridge. This collaborative project with the City of Glenwood Springs and the Downtown Development Authority creates a destination pedestrian environment, providing space for community events and additional space for dining and enjoyment.

glenwoodchamber.com

The ability to create welcoming public places and attention to the walkability of our city environments have always been important, but even more so now in the wake of COVID-19. The more flexible and inviting our public spaces, the better able we are to adapt to changing circumstances. This has certainly been the case over the last several months. What we have found is that downtown Glenwood is well positioned to meet the times, in part, as a result of the vision and commitment that the City and the Downtown Development Authority have paid over the recent years to placemaking projects. Bethel Plaza, located under the recently reconstructed Grand Avenue Bridge, could have been a left over space, instead it was designed as an open plaza in a deliberate and intentional manner. That forethought has served the City well as the plaza is now being repurposed for outdoor dining for the adjacent restaurants allowing service outside in a safe and inviting manner; and from the early summer activity, we are finding that these spaces are drawing patrons and creating vibrancy which in turn makes people feel more inclined to return to our downtown.

Similarly, the recently redesigned 7th Street is now hosting the summer’s Downtown Market. The street design was thoughtfully considered to accommodate this type of use and will enliven the downtown on Tuesday nights, a typically quiet night. Some retailers are talking about shifting their hours to stay open later on Tuesdays to capture some of the market visitors and provide for retail and dining experiences over a multi-block area. Parking spaces and alleyways are also being looked at anew with opportunities for inside activities to spill out. In this way, Glenwood is showing a resilience which speaks to the strength of community and a willingness to try new things, to experiment, to create safe places along our streets and plazas inviting people to the downtown to spend time, to play, to eat, to shop as we adapt to meet the needs of these changing times.

Sopris Splash Zone, Shoshone Chutes & Grand Fountain at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort The Sopris Splash Zone is an all new area with water attractions for the whole family at the Glenwood Hot Springs Resort. Shoshone Chutes is a whitewater river open air tube ride that feels like riding down a Colorado mountain creek. Sopris Splash Zone features three mini-water slides, waterfalls, interactive water features, shallow play areas and shade. The Grand Fountain is a splash pad during the day and a lighted fountain at night, providing beautiful views from both the pool and the pedestrian bridge.

Halvor Flowstone Protector of the Cave at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park Take a photo with Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park’s newest addition, Halvor Flowstone. The kid-friendly troll stands 14-feet-tall. In Old Norse, Halvor means Defender of the Rock, and Flowstone is a cave formation that looks like melted cake icing or a frozen waterfall. » glenwoodcaverns.com/attractions/ halvor-flowstone

“Tubing on the Colorado” at the North Landing

After a few public input meetings with City staff and the artist, Madeline Wiener, the “Tubing on the Colorado” marble sculpture was completed and installed at the North Landing site in October 2019. The artist lives in Colorado but creates public art throughout the United States. The interactive public art piece is made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). » madelinewiener.com

Your Library, Your Connection by Emily Hisel

No matter what is happening in the world around us, your Garfield County Libraries continue to serve as an invaluable connection point for individuals wanting entertainment, education, and human interaction. In the past few months, your libraries have reworked traditional offerings to make them accessible even when in person services were impossible. Anyone with a library card can now access free streaming movies and TV shows, as well as a much larger selection of ebooks, digital audiobooks, digital comics and graphic novels, and even streaming music. What’s more, library cards are free and if you don’t already have one you can open an account instantly through the library website, www.gcpld.org. Over 500 new people have signed up in the past few months, and countless others have renewed their subscription to library services.

More to Explore Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail

As you drive through the majestic Glenwood Canyon, stop at the rest areas to learn about the canyon’s history, wildlife habitats and the Colorado River. Rest areas located at No Name, Grizzly Creek, and Bair Ranch exits.

Your Garfield County Libraries have also created a new way to participate in our biggest event series each year...Summer Reading! Kids, teens, and adults can participate in our new Summer Reading Challenge. The “challenge” involves individuals striving to read 1,000 minutes this summer, with a goal of reading 400,000 minutes as a community. Once you register, every time you read you help meet those challenges and help us reach our goal!

The Pioneer/Linwood Cemetery

Hiking trail begins on Bennett Ave., between 11th and 13th Streets. The first burial here took place in 1887, and the cemetery is the final resting place of famed dentist, gambler and gunman, John Henry “Doc” Holliday.

The Glenwood Historical Society and Frontier Museum

Passing on the stories of Glenwood’s past to curious new generations is what the Glenwood Historical Society and Frontier Museum is all about. Exhibits showcase what life was once like for residents and visitors in Glenwood Springs. Wander through a replica of a typical pioneer household; discover more about ranching and mining in the area; learn about the Ute Indians and their connection to the region. In time, as the hot springs were developed, Glenwood Springs became a place for the world’s privileged class and attracted a diverse array of characters that included entrepreneurs, presidents, outlaws, gangsters, movie stars and more. Visit The Glenwood Historical Society and Frontier Museum located in a circa 1905 home at 1001 Colorado Avenue. » glenwoodhistory.com

Historical Timeline of Glenwood Springs For a historical timeline of Glenwood Springs, check out the plaques located on the east side of the Glenwood Springs Library and the north side of Colorado Mountain College’s Central Services building on 802 Grand Ave.

To make this even more exciting, we’ve enlisted the help of the Beanstack app (available from the Google Play store or Apple Store) to track reading, earn badges, and participate in extra fun. Anyone who wants to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge with traditional paper and pencil can still do so by stopping by any of our six locations to pick up a reading log. Summer Reading would not be complete without events. There are exciting digital opportunities for all ages including a TeenCon two-day conference for teens, a series of interactive songwriting workshops for adults, and weekly performances for children. See the full lineup of events at www.gcpld.org/summer-reading. Your libraries understand that connecting to the internet can be a barrier to participating in not only these events, but society as a whole. To help, we have just launched the “Wifi to Go!” program that offers free wireless hotspots to checkout. There are sixty units available, and you can borrow one for three weeks at a time with your library card. So, engage with your library, connect with the world, and enjoy your summer!

For visitors and locals in Glenwood Springs, that story is about steamy geothermal hot springs, historic old buildings, hotels bedazzled for the holidays, revitalized community gathering spaces, stunning outdoor locations and spectacular wonders, both man-made and natural. Any season of the year, these images capture the essence of Colorado’s ideal mountain community!

54 Making Glenwood Springs an ideal mountain community.

glenwoodchamber.com

Stunning photo locations

1| Hot Shot:

Glenwood Hot Springs and Iron Mountain Hot Springs

As Colorado’s premier hot springs destination, photos of the geothermal attractions are a must. The temperature inversion creates a micro atmosphere of vapor and clouds that is captivating and mysterious. There’s wide appeal in a picture of you admiring the scenery around you as the mist rises.

2| Urban Vibes: Bethel Plaza

Once dimly lit and the province of pigeons, the space under the Grand Avenue Bridge has been transformed into a bright, lively place where the community comes together for everyday meetups and special events. Flanked by Glenwood Springs restaurants, this place is always buzzing with some type of activity. Take fun and candid shots here, perfect for an impromptu photoshoot.

3| Pleasing Perspective: Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park

You don’t need a drone to take great aerial shots, just ride the Glenwood Gondola to America’s only mountain-top theme park. From the Viewing Deck at 7,100 feet above sea level, you’ll see beautiful Mount Sopris and Glenwood Springs in miniature below. Other great snaps to get while here include the spectacular cave formations of King’s Row, sitting on the Gram-worthy wood chair, or a shot of you on theme park rides open all winter long—like the Alpine Coaster and Haunted Mine Drop.

4| Artsy Shot:

Tubing on the Colorado River Sculpture

The newly placed sculpture on the North Landing of the Pedestrian Bridge weighs over 10,000 pounds and features pristine all-white Yule Marble from Colorado Stone Quarries in nearby Marble. Take a close-up that focuses on the details, texture and patterns of the artwork.

5| Landscape Extraordinaire: Hanging Lake

A scene of breathtaking natural beauty awaits those who hike to Hanging Lake. Though permits are required year-round to maintain and preserve the popular attraction, a little advanced planning and an online reservation will secure your spot to trek to this gem in Glenwood Canyon. There are plenty of picture-taking opportunities all along the path, but the highlight comes at the summit, where three waterfalls cascade into the crystal-clear lake.

6| Action Shot:

Sunlight Mountain Resort

In winter, Glenwood Springs is all about outdoor recreation. The local ski resort offers ample opportunities to capture subjects in motion. Ask someone to take a photo of you performing tricks in the Terrain Park or carving turns down Sun King or posing on the mountain. An image of your ski tips skimming over the treetops as you ride the Primo Lift to the summit is also a classic, as well as the unbeatable views of Mount Sopris on top of the mountain.

7| Old Time Architecture: The Hotel Colorado

Elegant, friendly, and iconic, the historic hotel is always a visual delight, especially during the holiday season. The outside is strewn with thousands of lights, while indoors it’s a holiday wonderland of decorations. You’ll easily be able to take well-composed photos with leading lines, vibrant colors and interesting details. Catch a selfie with a loved one to share the holiday cheer.

Healing Hot Springs

A tapestry woven from the heart Mountain Valley Weavers By Melissa DeHaan

The Mountain Valley Weavers not only make amazing woven art at Art on 8th, they are enabling the world to see how art can help people overcome adversity and triumph in life. The Mountain Valley Weavers are men and women with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program started with a woman, Erica, in Aspen, Colorado who taught her daughter how to weave. After her passing, the family donated looms and money to Mountain Valley Developmental Services. The dream was to carry on Erica’s legacy by creating a weaving program for individuals accessing services from Mountain Valley Developmental Services who also had an interest in art and who wanted to try weaving. Members of the Mountain Valley Weavers have had amazing accomplishments, from weaving a stole for the pope to having had pieces in the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Museum. In 1996 the weavers were producing enough woven goods to open a retail outlet in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Nearly twenty-five years later they are still producing high quality woven goods. The weavers proudly show the world how creative energy can conquer limits. Theirs is an incredible story that shows the world that it doesn't matter what you're born with or what circumstances surround your life, you can not only prevail, but excel. Art on 8th is a gallery featuring the fine craft of local Colorado artists, with the weaving studio a main element of the gallery. Open: Monday – Saturday: 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Sundays: 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Located: 209 8th street in downtown Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

Responding to changing needs

In May, student Maggie Friemel graduated from both Glenwood Springs High School and CMC Spring Valley. During the pandemic, Colorado Mountain College graduates received a mortarboard and tassel in the mail, contributed to the CMC 2020 commencement website and took part in the college’s first virtual commencement ceremony.

CMC nursing student Hannah Schanfarber is observed by her on-screen instructor, Karen Hamick, in a virtual clinical session. One of the governor’s COVID-19-related executive orders during spring 2020 permitted associate-level nursing students in the state to complete some of the 750 required hours of clinical experience in a virtual format so that they could graduate on time. 62 Making Glenwood Springs an ideal mountain community.

David Avila graduated from Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley this May, but was surprised at home the day before the virtual commencement ceremony when Kearstin Cameron, TRIO Success Center coordinator at the campus, showed up to give him the David Allen Outstanding Student award. He was wearing his cap and gown because his parents had told him to dress up for a video call with his grandmother.

Responding to changing needs

CMC in an unprecedented year Colorado Mountain College flexes to continue meeting students’ needs The whole world has felt the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic this year, and Colorado Mountain College has been no exception. But thanks to community, state, and federal support, and an innovative spirit, the college has flexed to continue meeting the educational and training needs of Colorado’s mountain towns. Including campuses in Glenwood Springs and nearby Spring Valley, CMC operates 11 campuses and learning locations in mountain resort areas. The springtime move to all-online classes was easier for CMC than it was for many colleges, because for years CMC has had a strong distancelearning program, including several fully online associate degrees. To help CMC’s local communities, college leadership developed a multi-pronged approach, called CMC Responds: Today, Tomorrow, Together.

For the first time in its history, CMC waived summer tuition, books, and fees for credit, English as a second language, and GED classes for three types of students. These students: 1) qualified as in-district, 2) were in-state students who had taken credit courses in spring 2020, or 3) were displaced workers living in the CMC district. Through another major component of CMC Responds, called Back to Business, CMC launched no-cost coaching, live educational trainings, and consultation services to in-district businesses. In partnership with local chambers and business incubators, the CMC team is aiding the hundreds of small businesses courageously seeking to reopen or rebuild. Help and support have run the gamut from website design to general business principles.

In addition to summer tuition waivers and Back to Business, the CMC Responds initiative included: + Extending the $1,000/year President’s Scholarship to students who have graduated

from local high schools since 2017

+ Donating all available personal protective equipment to local hospitals and clinics + Orchestrating a virtual commencement ceremony, which included graduation

care packages, and a creative commencement website (https://commencement2020.coloradomtn.edu/)

+ +

Making CMC facilities available where they might be needed during this health crisis Activating the No Barriers Fund in the CMC Foundation to support students facing financial hardship that prevents them from staying in school

+ Making tutoring services available to help local parents with home schooling + Distributing donated laptops to students who need them + Providing internet service to students and families without broadband access + Offering a free, special, condensed Introduction to Hospitality Supervision series.

Looking toward the fall semester, Colorado Mountain College remains flexible so that it can respond to the region’s changing response to the pandemic. Robust distance-learning options will continue to be available in the fall, with in-person learning added as conditions allow. Valley View nurses sew masks to fight COVID-19

Valley View, Glenwood Spring’s nonprofit community health system since 1955, knows how to make lemonade out of lemons. After elective surgery was suspended at the hospital during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic this spring, Valley View operating room nurses Kristen Dirksen and Brady Heuer got creative. At the time, there were concerns about personal protective equipment supplies. “We were sitting there and thinking, wait a minute, this item that we use on a daily basis is readily available to us, how can we use this?” Heuer said. The item in question was blue sterile wrap, a fabric federally approved to protect surgical tools once sterilized and in full supply at Valley View.

“We had this desperate desire to help. We had to help, it’s in our DNA, and I think more than anything people were excited to be able to have something to fight COVID, and to be able to contribute,” Dr. Butterfield said. The idea took off instantly among hospital leadership, and within a week, a full blown sewing center was established in Valley View’s Conference Center, led by Dirksen and Heuer. Staff from across the system impacted by the suspended surgeries redeployed to the sewing center, including nurses, administrative staff and Valley View’s own Plastic and Reconstruction Surgeon Jennifer Butterfield, MD. To Dr. Butterfield and others, the mask was a way to support the community during the pandemic. “We had this desperate desire to help. We had to help, it’s in our DNA, and I think more than anything people were excited to be able to have something to fight COVID, and to be able to contribute,” Dr. Butterfield said. While Valley View’s sewing center has come to an end since the supply chain evened out, the ingenuity behind the idea remains. “Brady and Kristen’s innovation is absolutely remarkable,” said Valley View’s CEO Brian Murphy, MD. “These are the kinds of ideas that will carry us forward in the care of our patients.” In total, Dirksen, Heuer and the entire sew team produced 20,000 masks, blowing away their goal of 10,000. Our Last RideTogether The Class of 2020 By Patrick Trulove-Young

2020 Class Graduates Left to right. Jacob Fowler, Patrick Trulove-Young, Aidan Partch, Cole Houston, and Tucker Sheldrake. Nobody would have thought that our last fleeting moments of high school would be capped off like this. Cars shuffled into the municipal airport, socially distanced from our friends, peers, teachers, and mentors. Breathing in the warm spring air… through a mask. To fully understand the magnitude of this journey, I must take you back to the beginning.

“While we may not be together, our friendships that started over 12 years ago will last a lifetime.”

I was fresh off the Front Range, beginning my 12-year journey in the Roaring Fork Valley. Lucky enough, during my first ever lunch at Sopris Elementary School, a towhead young man closely resembling myself, sat down and we began a conversation. This is how I met Tucker. Soon we would have a playdate, discovering our parents had grown up together in the MetroDenver area. This one lunch would soon begin a lifelong friendship. Not long after, Tucker introduced me to Cole and Jacob, and our group had taken shape. We began to play together at recess, birthday parties, and in our respective neighborhoods. By the time 4th grade rolled around, a new kid had appeared. Aiden hailed from the Pacific Northwest, but would quickly meld with our group; so, it began.

The boys progressed through every level of elementary, middle, and high school education. The one constant? We were always together. Challenging each other mentally, physically, and intellectually every step of the way. Our group had finally made it to the end of senior year. Still eating lunch together practically every day, sharing laughs, deep thoughts, and intense UNO games all within the supervision of our favorite teacher, “Gonzo.” Within the walls of 1402, our friendship was at an all-time high. Our big day, the one we had been eagerly awaiting since those early days at Sopris Elementary, had come. The graduation ceremony went on, our valedictorian delivering a powerful message about the resilience and toughness of our class, a life lesson gained from the greatest blind athlete in the world, and a celebration of car horns and whooping when each of our names was called. When our group came together in the end, the feeling was bittersweet. Parading down Midland and Grand, time was at a standstill. “The Boys” we called it, were together for one last ride, both literally, and physically. I love each and every last one of them with the bottom of my heart, and while we may not be together, our friendships that started over 12 years ago will last a lifetime. glenwoodchamber.com

Join us in opposing this destruction. Mountain beauty, relaxing hot springs and family fun have drawn people to Glenwood Springs for decades. The proposal to mine 5 million tons of limestone per year for 20-plus years would wreck what we all love about this place. Glenwood Springs is united in opposition. And we need your help.
