MELBOURNE, Dec 20: The Allan Labor Government is making our growing suburbs even better places to live with a new round of funding to deliver the infrastructure and services Victorians need – close to home.
The Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny opened applications for the latest round of Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC), which will invest $150 million to deliver transport projects including more bus services, train stations, intersections, roads, bike paths and walking paths in our suburbs.
Government departments, agencies, and local councils will be able to apply for this round of grants to ensure communities in growing suburbs have access to the services they need, close to where they live.
The GAIC fund is a one-off contribution payable by landowners developing certain land zoned for urban use and development in the Cardinia, Casey, Hume, Melton, Mitchell, Whittlesea and Wyndham local government areas.
To date, the program has provided more than $1 billion in funding for more than 150 infrastructure projects across these growth areas – including for ambulance stations, parks, schools and public transport.
This includes projects like $60 million to deliver a critical road link for the Ison Road Overpass in Werribee, $35 million towards a new school in Cobblebank, and more than $150 million for new bus services across
Melbourne’s north, west and south east. These projects are delivered for residents in the seven Local Government Areas where the contributions are collected. This kind of scheme does not exist elsewhere in the state in any consistent way – and many other growing communities like inner-suburbs close to public transport have been missing out. That’s why the Labor Government will create a better, fairer system for property developers to contribute to funding for local infrastructure and services in the areas where they build more homes. See more at premier. vic.gov.au.
Applications for this GAIC round are now open and will close at noon on 28 February 2025. Successful projects will be confirmed and announced next year.

Welcoming The First Little Victorians Born In 2025
MELBOURNE, Jan 1: Victoria has rung in the New Year, welcoming our newest and tiniest Victorians into the world – with around 40 babies born across the state in the early hours of 2025 and around 6,000 births expected throughout January.
Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas visited the Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg where two babies were born in the early hours of this morning – meeting the bubs and their proud parents, and importantly, thanking the hardworking staff who have been caring for Victorians throughout the festive season.
The state’s newest bundles of joy follow another busy year for maternity wards across the state, with more than 80,000 births
registered in Victoria throughout 2024 –March proving the year’s busiest month for births.
It comes as the Allan Labor Government celebrates the arrival of more than 80 babies in 2024 as part of Australia’s first public fertility program – helping more Victorians realise their dream of starting or growing their family.
Delivered in partnership with the Royal Women’s Hospital, the $120 million landmark program has already supported more than 4,000 Victorians to begin treatment closer to home – saving families up to up to $10,000.
Victoria’s maternity and newborn services are already some of the safest and highest quality in the world – and in 2024 work began to strengthen services with the introduction of a new maternity taskforce comprising representatives from the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation and regional and rural health services.
The Labor Government is also supporting parents when they need it most, opening a further six new or upgraded Early Parenting Centres in 2024 – including refurbished centres at Noble Park and Footscray, and new EPCs in Geelong, Clyde North, Ballarat,
and an Aboriginal-dedicated centre in Frankston.
Designed to feel like a home away from home, the centres are accessible to families with children up to four years of age, giving them the specialised support they need to care for their little ones closer to home.
Delivered by a multidisciplinary team including registered nurses and midwives, maternal and child health nurses, mental health professionals, and social workers, services include help with sleep and settling, feeding, and extra care for babies and toddlers with additional needs.
To give our newest Victorians the very best start in life, the Labor Government has also handed out more than 180,000 baby bundles since 2019 to first-time parents and carers.
The bundles contain nursery essentials to support the health, development and wellbeing of their babies, including a nappy bag, sleeping bag, muslin wrap, teething toy, first-aid kit, sun hat, toothbrush, books and key information.

Victoria's First Pill Testing Trial Off to A Successful Start
MELBOURNE, Jan 2: Victoria’s mobile pill testing service is off to a successful start with preliminary data and insights from the Beyond the Valley music festival confirming young people are eager for information that could keep them safe.
Acting Minister for Mental Health MaryAnne Thomas confirmed the free and confidential service spoke with more than 700 people – the majority in their late teens or early twenties – and tested more than 600
samples, with MDMA, ketamine and cocaine the common drugs presented for testing.
The service’s harm reduction focus is already proving effective with preliminary data revealing nearly 40 per cent of festivalgoers said they would use a smaller amount of their drugs following a conversation with a healthcare worker as part of the testing process.
For more than 70 per cent of patrons, these conversations were the first time they had ever had an open, judgment-free discussion about drug and alcohol safety with a health professional.
The service regularly saw patrons with pre-existing medical conditions who had not considered how substances might interact with their health – often they visited the service to test substances, unaware of the potential risks specific to their conditions.
Testing sometimes revealed these substances were not what they thought –a crucial discovery for people with heart conditions, respiratory issues, or other health concerns.
On multiple occasions, patrons reconsidered their choices after understanding the potential consequences once speaking to the service’s health workers.
The service also saw a significant number of festivalgoers keen to understand the interaction of recreational drugs with mental health conditions and prescription medications particularly antidepressants –many did not know that recreational drugs can interact dangerously with prescribed medications.
One example was a conversation with someone who had only recently started taking prescribed antidepressant medication and was considering taking MDMA – the health workers talked them through the potential risks and side effects if they chose to do that. The person said they would not use their drugs following this conversation.
Operated by The Loop and Harm Reduction Victoria in partnership with Youth Support and Advocacy Service – the service was able to test up to 200 drug samples a day, more than any other pill testing service in Australia.
The trial is just one of the health-led drug harm initiatives being delivered by the Allan Labor Government, with the state’s $95 million Statewide Action Plan to reduce opiate drug deaths and harm now underway.

Saving Families Money and Helping Kids Stay Safe
MELBOURNE, Jan 6: The Allan Labor Government is saving parents money and helping kids stay safe in and around the water, with affordable swimming lessons kicking off across the state.
Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Education Ben Carroll joined Kathy Parton CEO of Aquatics and Recreation Victoria at the Werribee Outdoor Pool to kick off the first day of the program – which is providing affordable lessons for families at more than 170 swimming centres, including 130 in
regional Victoria.
As part of the program which runs through January, families with kids aged four to 12 will take part in five 30-minute lessons, which run over the course of a week.
Ordinarily, a single swimming lesson can cost a family up to $25. Thanks to this program and the Labor Government’s investment, the cost for five lessons is just $35 per child – or $7 a lesson – plus booking fees. If eligible, families can also use their Get Active Kids vouchers to reduce the
lesson cost to zero.
This summer more than 16,800 Victorian kids will take part in the program – learning the skills and water safety knowledge they need to enjoy their summers by the pool and near the ocean.
For the first time, there are 400 extra spots this year for kids with disability and kids from multicultural backgrounds, so they can learn the same skills with the help of specialised teachers.
Lessons for kids with disability will be provided through dedicated programs and kids from CALD families have the option of signing up for lessons in Broadmeadows, Craigieburn, Sunshine, Werribee, Dandenong and more.
VICSWIM’s learn-to-swim program has helped generations of kids to feel confident in and around the water, from foundational swimming skills to water safety education.
The Labor Government has invested more than $917,000 in the program to make sure more kids get their chance to learn watersafety basics. For more information about the VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program visit vicswim.com.au.
Consulate General of India visits Dookie Campus to foster agriculture research and education collaborations
MELBOURNE: Indian Consul-General Dr Sushil Kumar visited the University of Melbourne's Dookie Campus in northernVictoria recently.
The visit was an opportunity to showcase the University's extensive agricultural research and educational facilities, strengthening the longstanding ties between India and the University.
Dr Kumar was given an in-depth tour of the Dookie Campus, which included visiting the crop farming plots, the state-of-theart glasshouse, the native plants garden, and the sheep farm. He also explored the vineyard and apple orchard, which offer hands-on learning experiences for students in agricultural science and toured the newly completed accommodation and teaching
facilities.
“My visit provided an excellent opportunity to interact with the facilities available, meet students and explore potential collaborative research and educational exchanges with the Indian Institutions,” Dr Sushil Kumar said.
University of Melbourne Associate Professor Surinder Singh Chauhan accompanied Dr Kumar on his tour and hosted a lunch with Dookie campus staff and students. The lunch provided an informal setting for discussions, with Associate Professor Chauhan offering an update on the University’s growing Indian engagements, collaborations in agricultural research and educational initiatives.
"The visit provided an excellent opportunity to showcase our teaching and research activities and was timely, following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Faculty of Science and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research,” Associate Professor Chauhan said.
“This partnership aims to foster cooperation in agricultural research and education to address the shared challenges facing the agricultural sectors in both India and Australia."
Council Rates Capped to Keep Costs Low for Victorians More Victorian Students to Enjoy Learning Outdoors
MELBOURNE, Dec 23: Council rate increases will again be capped at the forecast Consumer Price Index for next year, continuing the Allan Labor Government’s drive to reduce pressures on household budgets.
Minister for Local Government Nick Staikos announced the rate cap of 3 per cent for the next financial year under the Labor Government’s Fair Go Rates System.
The Government accepted the recommendation of the Essential Services Commission regarding the cap, which is equal to the forecast Consumer Price Index for 2025-26. The rate cap limits the amount all Victorian councils can increase their total revenue from general rates and municipal charges.
Rates are set by each local council to fund services and facilities like local parks, libraries, community centres, roads and footpaths, kindergartens and sporting
facilities.
This year’s rate cap aims to ease cost of living pressures for Victorian families, while still allowing councils to continue providing these services to people.
In the decade before the introduction of the Labor Government’s Fair Go Rates system in 2016, council rates were increasing by an average of 6 per cent each year. Since the introduction of the cap, the average rate cap between 2016-17 and 2024-25 is 2.3 per cent, limiting steep successive increases for Victorian rate payers.
Councils may apply to the Essential Services Commission for a higher rate cap if they can demonstrate a critical need for spending on services or projects that would require a rate rise above the capped amount.
To learn more about how council rates are set, visit www.localgovernment.vic.gov.au/ council-innovation-and-performance/councilrates-and-charges.
Helping Busy Families with Free Driving Lessons
MELBOURNE, Dec 20: The Allan Labor Government is helping busy families with the cost of living – and the cost of learning to drive – by funding a new, free program for learner drivers and supervisors.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne announced the start of myLearners Free Lesson, a free 60 minute in-car session designed to help parents confidently guide young drivers.
The session will be delivered by an accredited driving instructor to teach learner drivers essential road safety skills and help supervising drivers gain the confidence to support their learners to complete their 120 hours.
The initiative is expected to support around 15,000 families.
The Labor Government is also making the training and accreditation free for professional driving instructors to become accredited to deliver this program.
Victorian learner permit holders aged 16 to 19 – who have completed 10 to 30 hours of driving practice and have a fully licensed supervising driver available to attend
the lesson with them – will be eligible to participate.
The course is targeted at young drivers as this cohort is almost four times more likely to be involved in a fatal or serious injury crash than more experienced drivers in their first year of driving on their Ps.
The myLearners Free Lesson is another way the Labor Government is helping learners develop safe driving habits, with Victoria's world-class Graduated Licensing System reducing fatal and serious crashes among young drivers by more than 40 per cent since its introduction in 2007.
It is just one cost-of-living measure the Labor Government is delivering for drivers, including free rego for tradies, a 25 per cent discount on rego renewal fees for safe drivers, and free learner lessons for disadvantaged new drivers.
Registrations for the myLearners Free Lesson are now open. To book your free lesson or learn more about becoming an accredited driving instructor, visit mylearnersdrive.com.au.
MELBOURNE, Jan 3: More schools across Victoria have been able to make the most of their outdoor areas and get students learning outside more often thanks to investment from the Allan Labor Government. Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll announced the School Shade Sails Fund program had reached a milestone of more than 1,200 projects rolled out across the state.
All government schools and low-fee nongovernment schools have been eligible to apply for a grant up to $25,000 per campus. A total of 1,259 projects are now complete, providing new outdoor learning areas for thousands of students.
The grants program began in 2021 to fund new shade sails over outdoor learning spaces to make them more comfortable and sun-safe for more than 457,000 students.
They also help in covering small food gardens tended to by students and are an open space for reading and yarning circles.
The Labor Government has invested almost $17 billion over the past decade to build new schools and deliver more than 2,000 school upgrades − supporting more than 26,000 jobs in construction and associated industries.

More Funding to Support Small Regional Kinders
MELBOURNE, Jan 8: The Allan Labor Government is helping busy families by securing the long-term future of small regional kindergartens, boosting funding for early learning facilities this year.
Minister for Children Lizzie Blandthorn announced an increase to the annual baseline funding for rural sessional kindergarten services by including thousands of dollars in Free Kinder funding for the first
time.
Based on expected enrolment numbers for 2025, more than 60 regional kindergartens will receive increased funding – delivering almost $10 million in total for these services and making sure Victorians get the best education, close to home.
Eligible services will be funded the increased baseline equivalent to 18 enrolments, even if they have fewer children, from 1 January. Service providers will receive the first increased payment in Term 2 automatically, based on their reported enrolments for the year.
This means Victoria’s smallest kindergartens will receive more than $132,000 to help them continue to provide the best start to our smallest Victorians.
To be eligible, kindergartens must be the only kinder provider in their regional town or local area and have fewer than 18 enrolments. The approach simplifies
kindergarten funding for service providers which can have higher operating costs because of their regional location.
This year the Labor Government’s Free Kinder program will save families up to $2,627 per child at sessional kindergartens and up to $2,101 per child at long daycare centres.
The Labor Government is investing billions to build and expand hundreds of kindergartens.
across the state, supporting the delivery of 15 hours of three-year-old kindergarten each week by 2029 and up to 30 hours of pre-prep each week by 2036.
Through our nation-leading Best Start, Best Life reforms, the Labor Government is transforming early childhood education to help children thrive, save families money, and support parents and carers to return to work or study. (MEDIA RELEASE)

Air India fully committed to improving quality, consistency of services: CEO Wilson
NEW DELHI, Jan 1: Air India is fully committed to improving the quality and consistency of services, in all areas, so that it becomes the world-class airline, said CEO Campbell Wilson.
In his new year's greetings, Wilson mentioned that "Air India's global coverage will further increase in the years ahead, not least because of the recent addition of 100 aircraft to its orderbook, augmenting the earlier commitment for 470 made in 2023."
These new aircraft will be supported by a brand-new 12-bay maintenance facility and maintenance training school in Bengaluru, a new 34-aircraft flight school in Amravati,
and the aforementioned training academy in Gurugram, underscoring our commitment to strengthening India's aviation ecosystem, not just our airline, he said.
"Air India's transformation covers every aspect of our business, and involves significant upgradation of systems, processes, infrastructure, equipment, and people. While the journey still has a way to go, some significant milestones have been achieved."
More than 100 new aircraft have been deployed, including India's first Airbus A350 aircraft now flying from Delhi to London and New York, he added.
"These are part of the one-third of our twin-aisle fleet that now sport modernised interiors and entertainment systems, with the remainder of the fleet progressively undergoing similar upgradation over the next two years. Interior refit of the singleaisle fleet, serving domestic and short-haul international destinations, is already well underway, and will be complete by mid2025."
The merger of the four Tata airlines into one full-service airline, Air India, and one lowcost carrier, Air India Express, was completed in late 2024, and the erstwhile Vistara aircraft are now deployed on metro-to-metro domestic routes and to key international destinations such as Frankfurt and Singapore to ensure a consistently high-quality experience.
These mergers and new aircraft deliveries have taken fleet to 300 aircraft, allowing it to expand reach to over 100 destinations in India and around the world.
A new lounge for travellers in premium classes has been opened at Bengaluru and will soon be followed by another in Delhi during 2025, and in other key cities in time to come, he said.
Air India has covered a lot of ground in the period since privatisation.
"We acknowledge there's much more to be done. All 30,000 Air Indians are fully committed to improving the quality and consistency of our services, in all areas, so that Air India becomes the world-class airline we all want it to be", he said.
US Congress Certifies Donald Trump's 2024 Election Win
WASHINGTON, Jan 7: US Congress convened to count electoral college votes and certify President-elect Donald Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election held in November. Trump's election victory was certified ahead of his inauguration with no objections from any lawmakers as the tally of states was announced on the House floor. Donald Trump won 312 electoral votes while Harris got 226 votes, a total that was confirmed during the certification on Monday, marking the final step in the election process before Trump returns
back to the White House on January 20.
Republican lawmakers gave a standing ovation in the chamber when Harris announced Trump's victory was certified, The Hill reported. A bipartisan standing ovation broke out in the House Chamber after Harris announced that the joint session of Congress was dissolved. The event lasted for around 30 minutes before Kamala Harris gavelled it out.
Kamala Harris presided over the process and the proceedings went off without a hitch. Several lawmakers helped in the counting, including Senator Amy Klobuchar, Senator Deb Fischer and Representatives - Bryan Steil and Joe Morelle. Vice President-elect JD Vance was also present in the chamber during the count.
It comes four years after rioters stormed the Capitol to try and halt the certification of
US President Joe Biden's victory over Trump, who had made claims that the 2020 election was fraudulent. Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida when the certification played out without much fanfare.
Hours before the lawmakers arrived to certify election results, Donald Trump called it a "big moment in history." Ahead of the certification, a video was released in which Harris called the "peaceful transfer of power" as a bedrock of US democracy, calling her duty a "sacred obligation."
She said, "As we have seen, our democracy can be fragile." Harris said, "And it is up to each of us to stand up for our most cherished principles."
A snowstorm hit Washington overnight, worrying lawmakers who were trying to return to the Capitol for the certification, The Hill reported. The certification had to go forward as changing the date due to the weather would have required a new law.
Furthermore, the Capitol Hill was on high alert after the events that happened four years back, with fencing placed around the Capitol complex and more police personnel deployed throughout Senate and House office buildings and the Capitol itself.
Trudeau steps down as party leader, to step down as Canada PM after new leader chosen
OTTAWA, Jan 6: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that he would resign as the leader of Liberal Party and as Prime Minister as soon as a new candidate is found for the post.
Trudeau said that he had spoken to the Liberal Party President to start looking for a new Prime Ministerial candidate.
"I intend to resign as party leader and as Prime Minister after the party choses next leader. If I have to fight internal battles, I can't be a good candidate. I have asked the liberal part president to search for a new candidate for the post of Prime Minister," he said.
Trudeau said that the Parliament house will now be prorogued till March 24.
"We have worked for this country. We are
at a critical moment in the world. Canadian resilience motivates me to serve. I am a fighter. Every bone in my body has always told me to fight because I care deeply about Canadians, I care deeply about this country, and I will always be motivated by what is in the best interest of Canadians. The fact is despite best efforts to work through it, Parliament has been paralysed for months after what has been the longest session of a minority Parliament in Canadian history. That's why this morning, I advised the Governor General that we need a new session of Parliament. She has granted this request and the House will now be prorogued until March 24. Over the holidays, I have also had a chance to reflect and to have long talks with my family about our future. Throughout the course of my career, any success I have personally achieved has been because of their support, their encouragement. So, last night over dinner I told my kids about the decision that I am sharing with you today. I intend to resign as party leader, as Prime Minister after the party selects its next leader...Last night I asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin that process. This country deserves a real choice in the next election and it has become clear to me that I am having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election," he said
Truedau said that he will not put forth his candidature as a potential Prime Minister.
"I will not be putting my candidature. Liberal party is an important institution in our country. We were elected for 3rd time in 2021 to advance Canada's stand in world. I never bow down when faced with a fight, but I do this job because of the interest of Canadians and the interest of democracy that I hold dear. And it is clear I can't be that candidate due to internal battles," he said.
Trudeau, while speaking about Former Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said that he expected her to continue as the Deputy Prime Minister.
"Chrystia (Freeland) has been a political partner for many years. I had hope she would continue as deputy pm, but she chose otherwise," he said.
Trudeau added that Pierre Pollivere of the Conservative Party was not right for the country.
"Pierre Pollivere's vision is not right for this country," he said.
Governor General Mary Simon has given her permission to prorogue Parliament until March 24. However, a new leader of the Liberal party may not find the going easy with the conservatives threatening to move a confidence motion against them.
Australia Clinches the Border-Gavaskar Trophy After a Decade, Defeating India 3-1 in a Thrilling Series
In an exhilarating turn of events, Australia reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a gap of ten years, beating India by six wickets in the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). This victory not only marked a return to glory for the Baggy Greens, but it also sealed their place in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s, where they will face South Africa. The 3-1 series triumph is a testament to Australia’s resilience, strategic acumen, and strong team dynamics.
India’s hopes of qualifying for a third consecutive World Test Championship final were dashed as their batting crumbled in the crucial Sydney Test. The series finale was emotional for both teams, with Indian players such as captain Rohit Sharma absent due to injuries, and head coach Gautam Gambhir watching with a sense of dejection as his side’s campaign faltered.
Australia’s path to victory was marked by strong performances from their bowlers, particularly Scott Boland, who played a pivotal role in dismantling India’s innings. On Day 3, Pat Cummins’ sharp deliveries created breakthroughs, leaving India with just 157 runs to defend. Australia’s target of 162 was modest, but the match was far from over.
Australia’s Dominance: A Swift Chase of the Target
Australia, chasing a target of 162, began their innings with confidence. The Indian bowlers, especially in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, struggled to maintain pressure. Bumrah had been forced to leave the field due to back spasms, leaving a gaping hole in India’s attack. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna tried to steady the ship, but the pressure of defending such a low total proved too much.
Sam Konstas, debuting for Australia, led the charge in the chase, and despite a few hiccups in the form of quick wickets, the Australian side remained firm. The momentum slowly shifted in their favor as they closed in on the target, and debutant Beau Webster helped seal the win in style, finishing with an unbeaten 39, guiding his team to victory. Travis Head’s calm innings of 34 not out further added to Australia’s dominance.
The celebrations at the SCG were raucous as Australia completed the chase, securing a historic win. The joy was not only about winning the match but also about reclaiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after ten long years.
The victory was symbolic of Australia’s grit, determination, and strategic execution, bringing the coveted trophy back home.
The Verbal Exchange and Controversies: A Fiery Border-Gavaskar Series
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, as always, was a fiercely contested affair, with emotions running high both on and off the field. One of the standout moments occurred during the opening day of the Sydney Test, when Australian debutant Sam Konstas was involved in a verbal altercation with India’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah. This incident led to strong reactions, particularly from India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, who criticized Konstas for stepping out of line.
Gambhir expressed his displeasure, stating that such altercations were unwarranted, and that it was the responsibility of the umpire and the batsman to maintain order. The clash escalated tensions, but it was just one of many fiery moments throughout the series. Konstas had also been involved in a similar incident at the MCG against Virat Kohli, adding to the competitive and emotionally charged atmosphere that marked the series.
While tensions boiled over at times, it was clear that the Australian team’s discipline and focus on the game helped them edge past India. India’s veterans, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, struggled throughout the series, with many critics questioning their future in the Test format. Gambhir, however, stood firm in his belief that the two stalwarts would continue to contribute to Indian cricket for years to come.
Bumrah’s Record-Breaking Performance: A Silver Lining for India
In a silver lining for India, Jasprit Bumrah’s incredible performance during the series earned him a historic achievement. He became the highest-ranked Indian Test bowler in ICC history, surpassing Ravichandran Ashwin’s previous record with 907 points. Bumrah’s dynamic spells, especially his nine wickets at the MCG, earned him the recognition he deserved as one of the world’s best fast bowlers. His efforts were invaluable to India, though the team as a whole could not capitalize on his contributions during the Sydney Test.
Bumrah’s rise to the top of the rankings was well-deserved, and his performance throughout the series solidified his reputation as one of
the premier fast bowlers in modern cricket. His relentless efforts helped India stay competitive against a formidable Australian side, but despite his heroics, the overall team performance fell short.
The Future of Indian Cricket: Retirement Speculations and Gambhir’s Comments
As the series concluded, speculations began to swirl regarding the retirement of two of India’s greatest players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. With the duo’s form faltering throughout the series, many pundits and fans questioned whether it was time for them to step away from Test cricket. However, India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, was quick to quash such rumors, stating that the decision would ultimately rest with the players themselves. Gambhir expressed hope that both Rohit and Kohli would continue to contribute to Indian cricket for years to come, given their experience, leadership, and unwavering passion.
Rohit, who had missed the final Test due to injury, addressed the speculation by assuring fans that he was not retiring from Test cricket. He emphasized that despite the lack of runs, he was confident that he would bounce back in the future. Both he and Virat Kohli have been pivotal to India’s success over the last decade, and their leadership will be crucial in India’s future cricketing endeavors.
A Thrilling Chapter in the BorderGavaskar Rivalry
The 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy will go down as one of the most hard-fought series in recent history. Australia’s 3-1 triumph marks a significant achievement in their cricketing history, ending India’s dominance in the competition and marking the return of the trophy after a decade. Despite India’s valiant efforts and individual performances, it was Australia’s all-round team effort, led by captain Pat Cummins, which proved to be the difference.
As both teams look ahead to future battles, including Australia’s date with South Africa in the WTC final, the legacy of this series will continue to shape the fierce rivalry between these two cricketing powerhouses. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy remains one of the most eagerly anticipated contests in the world of cricket, and this year’s series added yet another thrilling chapter to its storied history.

STAYING SAFE FROM MOSQUITO-BORNE DISEASES THIS SUMMER
MELBOURNE, Dec 20: Victorians are being reminded to take steps to protect themselves against mosquitoborne diseases this summer, with recent wet and humid weather creating ideal conditions for mosquito breeding.
Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas called on people enjoying Victoria’s great outdoors this holiday season to be mindful of the health risks mosquitoes can pose.
Simple steps you can take to keep yourself and your family safe from mosquito bites include:
• Wearing long, loose-fitting and light-coloured clothing
• Applying insect repellents containing picaridin or DEET on exposed skin
• Avoiding mosquitoes when they are most active, particularly around dawn and dusk
• Making sure your accommodation is fitted with mosquito screens or nets
If camping or caravanning, keep doors and tent flaps closed to stop mosquitoes
getting in, ensure mosquito screens or nets are intact, and try to avoid camping near wetland habitats where mosquitos are likely breeding.
Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus infections increase during the summer period across Victoria, and both are spread by mosquitoes. Symptoms include fever, chills, and joint pain. While most people will get better within a few weeks, for some the recovery can take
months.
Japanese encephalitis, Murray Valley encephalitis and West Nile virus/Kunjin disease are rare in Victoria but have the potential to cause severe disease. A vaccine is available for Japanese encephalitis for Victorians who meet eligibility criteria.
Melburnians, particularly those living in or visiting coastal areas around the bay and Bellarine and Mornington peninsulas, should also be mindful of Buruli ulcer. Symptoms of infection can take months to develop and may include persistent spots that look like insect bites, ulcers, painful lumps and lasting redness.
The disease has been linked to possums and the main pathway of transmission to humans is via mosquito bites, so take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and avoid contact with wildlife, particularly animals showing signs of a sore or ulcer.
For more information about protecting yourself from mosquito-borne diseases, visit the Better Health Channel and Department of Health websites.
Family Trust and the property division
FBY GURPAL SINGH
amily trusts are common legal structure used in Australia with multitude of benefits.
Under section 4 of the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth) (the Act) Family Trust is considered a property and are thus liable to be divided between the parties to the property division. The legal owners of the trust are known as trustees and are in charge of managing and administering assets for the benefits of the beneficiaries.
To form a family trust, the settlor provides the trustee with the assets to be held for the beneficiaries. The settlor is a person responsible for setting up the trust and describing the beneficiaries, the trustee, and the appointer. The appointer is a person who has the power to change the trustee and is responsible for appointing and replacing the trustee or trustees if so required. The beneficiaries generally are family members who may benefit from the trust, such as parents, children and the grandchildren. In the event of bankruptcy, family trusts can protect assets from creditors, reduce tax rates and protect vulnerable family members from poor spending decisions. If one party is not listed as either the appointer or trustee but is indirectly controlling the trust, the trust could still form part of the asset pool. A trust may also be referred to as a ‘financial resource’ for financial resource is an asset that will generate income in the future, such as inheritance or a beneficiary’s interest in the trust.
Once considered a financial resource, under section 75(2) of the Act, the court will take the trust into account as a potential future necessity for one or both the parties of
divorce.
The powers of the court exercising jurisdiction under the Act to affect third parties who are entitled to be considered for distributions from a discretionary trust, or who exercise the responsibilities of trusteeship, are limited. In order for the assets to be treated as property for the purposes of the Act, it is necessary, but not sufficient, that a party to the marriage has control of the assets and the power to distribute to himself or herself, or the other spouse. The source of the assets must also be examined. Where the source of the trust assets is from someone other than a party to the marriage, there are third party beneficiaries who have rights to be considered, and neither party, and neither part to the marriage has an equitable proprietary interest in the fund, the trust property cannot be divided under section 79 or section 85A to the prejudice of
the third parties even where the conditions of control by a party to the marriage and power to distribute to one or other of them are met. The court cannot treat as property of the parties to the marriage or either of them assets which are under the control of third-party trustees under a party to the marriage has an equitable proprietary interest or has the power to appoint or remove the trustee. The court will consider various factors when dividing a family trust in the event of separation including the size of the trust, assets, establishment location, and the beneficiaries’ entitlements.
Trust assets are unlikely to be excluded from a family settlement if the structure is such that individuals are receiving assets from the trust or an income from the family trust if it is intended that the family trust should not be included in the matrimonial pool available for distribution in any potential property settlements as a result of the relationship breakdown.
In the matter of Kennon v Spry the family court pooled the assets of a 1968 family trust as the property of the marriage. This decision resulted in trust assets of a family trust forming part of the property pool in family law proceedings. It also resulted in the reversal updates to the discretionary trust which had removed the husband and wife as beneficiaries of the trust. The court considered three issues being control of the trust – directly or indirectly; who put the assets into the family trust and are they really your assets and who benefits from the family trust? Are distributions going to you or the new spouse/partner. The high court decision in Spry reveals the court’s power to dismantle trust structures.

Gurpal Singh emphasizes the importance of the Punjabi community staying connected to both India and the global community through the creation of world-class institutions. Specifically, he advocates for the establishment of a leading institution focused on Economics and Fiscal Policy, with a global reach and research-driven approach. “The Sikh community is under an obligation to set up a world-class institution in Economics and fiscal policy,” Gurpal says. He envisions this institution as a beacon of economic research, providing innovative solutions to global challenges.
Gurpal is passionate about ensuring that the Sikh community plays an active role in shaping the future of the world’s economy. He suggests that the institution be led by Sikhs of high caliber—comparable to figures like Ajay Banga, the current president of the World Bank—who can elevate the community’s influence in the global economic sphere. Gurpal sees this as a natural
extension of Dr. Singh’s legacy, as the former Prime Minister’s work and vision laid the groundwork for a global leadership role for the Sikh community in economic matters.
The meeting between Gurpal Singh and Dr. Manmohan Singh encapsulates the profound impact Dr. Singh’s leadership had on both India and the international community. Gurpal’s reflections on Dr. Singh’s life, his leadership principles, and his commitment to both the Sikh community and global development provide valuable insights for future generations. Celebrating 20 Years of Healthy Smiles Dental Group
Innovative Practices, Sustainability, and Unmatched Patient Care – Healthy Smiles’ Path to Excellence
As Healthy Smiles Dental Group celebrates its 20th anniversary, it also stands proudly as a multi-award-winning practice, with recent accolades such as the Whitehorse Business Excellence Award. Dr. Ved Berani, the Principal Dentist and driving force behind the practice’s success, speaks with Gday Indian Magazine about the philosophy, sustainability initiatives, and innovations that have made Healthy Smiles a trusted name in dental care.
Q: Dr. Berani, as a second-generation dentist, how has your personal philosophy shaped the patient-centric approach at Healthy Smiles, particularly in cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry?
A: My personal philosophy in dentistry has always been to prioritize the patient, rather than just treating their dental issues. At Healthy Smiles, we understand that each patient’s journey involves more than just their oral health—it often connects to their mental and emotional well-being. A smile is deeply personal, tied to one’s selfesteem and how they present themselves to the world. We take a holistic approach to dentistry, considering the mind and heart of
a patient. This perspective has allowed us to offer more than just dental care; we restore confidence and help patients reclaim their lives through superior care, even at higher costs, to provide them with transformative, life-changing results.
Q: Priyanka, how did you integrate the ‘Patients First’ philosophy into Healthy Smiles, and what challenges did you face in growing the multi-award-winning practice to a team of 35?
A: The 'Patients First' philosophy is embedded in everything we do at Healthy Smiles. To make this a reality, we have invested in extensive training and coaching for our team, ensuring that every staff member understands the importance of catering to the needs of our patients. We listen actively, offering solutions that align with each patient’s unique needs. When growing the practice, one challenge was managing information flow across multiple practitioners and staff members to maintain consistent service quality. As the practice expanded, maintaining the ‘personal boutique experience’ for every patient, no matter the size of the treatment, has been a key challenge and one we’ve worked hard to preserve.
Q: Dr. Berani, winning the Bupa Health Services Award for Sustainability is a significant achievement. Can you share the key sustainability initiatives you’ve integrated into your dental practice and their impact on patient care?
A: Sustainability has been a cornerstone of our practice. Along with the Bupa Health Services Award, we are proud to have won the Whitehorse Business Excellence Award for medium-sized businesses. We implement sustainability in several key areas: smart scheduling to minimize patient visits and reduce travel time, and a 30kW solar panel system to reduce our carbon footprint. These initiatives not only benefit the environment but also enhance patient care by creating a more efficient, eco-friendly practice. Our aim is to provide high-quality dental care while being mindful of our planet’s future.
Q: Healthy Smiles has earned a reputation for its ‘7-star customer care.’ What strategies or innovations have you implemented to ensure this level of care?
A: At Healthy Smiles, we believe that word-of-mouth and referrals are essential to our success. Our focus on creating an exceptional patient experience starts from the moment they step into the clinic. We have taken steps to reduce dental anxiety by offering amenities like wireless noisecancelling headphones, aromatherapy, soothing music, and even sedation dentistry when necessary. These efforts create a stress-free, pain-free experience that patients rave about, leading to the increase of our patient base from 1,500 patients in 2004 to 19,000 today. We believe that the customer experience extends beyond dentistry and aim to make every visit a pleasant one, reinforcing our commitment to superior care.
Q: As Healthy Smiles celebrates 20 years, what future advancements do you envision to maintain excellence and continue taking the fear out of dentistry?
A: Innovation is key to maintaining excellence in dentistry. We’re excited about
the rapid incorporation of technology into our practice. For instance, using artificial intelligence in radiographs helps us diagnose problems earlier, making treatment quicker and more affordable. Additionally, our use of 3D videography enables us to diagnose complex dental issues in-house rather than relying on external centres. Our commitment to technology extends to digital impressions and 3D printing, which helps us deliver appliances within 48 hours, a far cry from the weeks it used to take.
We also focus on enhancing patient comfort, offering sleep dentistry for complex procedures without the need for hospitalization. This is a rare and valuable service, reducing both the cost and stress of dental care. Our goal is to make dental care more accessible, affordable, and above all, of the highest quality.
Looking Ahead: A Future of Growth and Innovation
Healthy Smiles Dental Group’s journey over the last 20 years is a testament to the practice’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and patient care. As the dental industry evolves, Dr. Berani and his team are prepared to continue adapting and growing to meet the needs of their patients. By leveraging advanced technology and
maintaining a focus on the holistic well-being of patients, Healthy Smiles is set to lead the way in high-quality dental care, keeping patients at the heart of everything they do.
With future plans for continued growth, the practice is focused on not only enhancing dental services but also ensuring that patients enjoy a stress-free, personalized experience. As they look forward to the next 20 years, Dr. Berani’s vision for Healthy Smiles remains clear: to be the trusted name for dental care in Melbourne, offering the highest standards of service, comfort, and care to every patient who walks through the door.
Conclusion
Healthy Smiles Dental Group’s legacy is built on trust, excellence, and a commitment to both the art and science of dentistry. With a focus on innovation, sustainability, and patient-centered care, Dr. Ved Berani’s vision has transformed the practice into a leader in the field, providing top-notch dental care while making every patient’s experience as pleasant and stress-free as possible. With 20 years of excellence behind them, the future looks bright for Healthy Smiles as they continue to redefine the dental experience for all.

GOOGLE MAPS TO INTRODUCE LANE GUIDANCE FOR IMPROVED NAVIGATION
In a significant update aimed at improving urban driving experiences, Google Maps is set to introduce enhanced navigation features starting next month. This upgrade will visually indicate the correct lane for upcoming turns, alongside displaying essential elements such as crosswalks, traffic signs, and lane restrictions.
Beginning in November, users in 30 metropolitan areas across the United States will benefit from this innovative feature on both Android and iOS platforms.
The enhanced navigation is designed to ease the stress of driving in unfamiliar settings, adding to existing tools like lane guidance and 3D route visualization. In conjunction with these updates, Google Maps is also enhancing its “destination guidance” functionality. This week, users will see improvements that highlight their destination, identify building entrances, and provide information about
nearby parking lots. Additionally, the app will now include reminders for parking locations and offer walking directions to the entrances of buildings, according to The Verge. To further support drivers, Google Maps is expanding its reporting capabilities to include adverse weather conditions.
This new feature will alert users to potential hazards such as low visibility, fog, snow,
unploughed roads, and flooding, ensuring safer travel during inclement weather. Beyond these navigation enhancements, Google is integrating more artificial intelligence features into the app to assist users in discovering new places.
Meanwhile, Waze, a Google-owned navigation service, is experimenting with voice-activated incident reporting to improve real-time updates for drivers, according to The Verge. Recent months have seen a wave of significant changes to Google Maps, including the use of AI to summarize reviews for electric vehicle chargers and to provide tailored recommendations for dining and attractions.
As Google continues to refine and expand its mapping services, users can expect a more intuitive and informative navigation experience in the near future.
YOUTUBE TESTS AI-POWERED MUSIC REMIXES
YouTube is exploring the future of music remixing with a new AI-driven feature, allowing creators to “restyle” licensed songs for their Shorts. The company has launched a limited trial of this feature, named ‘Dream Track’, which enables creators to use artificial intelligence to customize various elements of a song, including its mood, genre, and tempo, as per The Verge.
Once the user enters a prompt to guide the restyling, the AI generates a unique 30-second remix that can be used in YouTube Shorts. The feature is currently being tested by a small group of creators, with access granted to those invited to participate in the experiment.
To use ‘Dream Track’, creators can select an eligible song, describe how they want to transform it, and then let the AI produce the reworked track. The remixed soundtracks will be labelled with clear attribution to the original song and will also include a note that the track was altered using AI.
YouTube has emphasized that the ‘Dream Track’ experiment will only feature music from artists who have consented to have their voices used by the AI. Some of the participating artists include Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, and John Legend.
However, at this stage, it remains unclear which specific songs are available to remix and which music labels YouTube is working with to facilitate the project.
The new feature is part of YouTube’s broader effort to bring more creative tools to its platform, especially for creators who make Shorts--a format that has seen tremendous growth in recent years, as per The Verge.
By leveraging AI, YouTube aims to offer users a greater degree of flexibility in how they engage with music, enabling them to generate personalized soundtracks that align with their creative visions.
Reports from June, obtained by The Verge, also suggested that YouTube had been in talks with major music labels to obtain permission to
use their songs for AI training purposes.
This move could potentially pave the way for a larger-scale rollout of AI-powered music customization tools, which would further revolutionize how users interact with music on the platform.
While still in the experimental phase, ‘Dream Track’ offers a glimpse into the future of AIassisted music creation, where creators can seamlessly blend original works with innovative new twists, giving rise to an entirely new genre of user-generated content.

GOING OUT ON A FIRST DATE? AVOID THESE COMMON MISTAKES THAT PEOPLE MAKE
It’s all too easy to be discouraged and make certain mistakes in a hurry when one faces trouble in finding a connection. No pressure, but the first impression your date will have of you will largely be based on how that first meet goes. Although any initial encounter can be awkward, especially if you don’t know much about the other person. But it doesn’t always have to be that way, no matter what you’re looking for in them, be it a serious relationship or just a casual fling. It’s important to come prepared with a general understanding of what is acceptable and appropriate for the first date, and what isn’t. Ultimately, it comes down to the impressions we leave on the other person.
How you act on the first date depends on how you feel about the person you’re going out with.
Imagine, everything is going great on the first date. Your conversation is flowing naturally, the mutual attraction seems undeniable, and you immediately decide that you want to hang out again. If you really like the person you’re going out with and want to be in the abovedescribed setting, then it’s in your best interest to avoid the following common mistakes that people tend to make on their first dates.
Neglecting your appearance
Even though the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover and that people should focus on inner beauty, personality traits rather than the way we look, however, in this particular setting that would be crap advice. We draw a lot of conclusions about a person within just seconds of meeting them solely based on outward appearance. In those few seconds, the other person looks at you, they’ve already sized you up. Hence, it goes without saying, personal hygiene and a polished outfit are very important. The way we present ourselves tells a lot about our style, confidence and personal preferences. Looking good for your date shows that you think that the other person is worth the time and effort. It also projects that you take pride in your appearance. Most women find a well-dressed man sexy and desirable.
Controversial topics like politics
While it’s absolutely fine to mention that you really love politics, if you do, also completely avoid expressing your strong left or right-wing leanings on the first date. It might come across as incredibly blunt and possibly offensive if your date is not on the same side of the spectrum. Remember you are on a date and not a battleground. However, if there is a difference of opinion, stir the conversation on a lighter subject, where both of you don’t have to carry on with the ‘let’s agree to disagree’ motion.
Checking out other girls
If you’re on a date with a particular girl, then other women should not exist for you. Don’t openly flirt with the restaurant’s receptionist, don’t size up or follow other girls with your eyes.
None of that stuff. Even if you have a habit of normally doing it uncontrollably, try as hard as you can to focus on your companion only. Otherwise, a second date may not follow. That said, if you do talk to other women and have a conversation in general, then at all costs avoid flirting openly in front of her in a blatant manner because that shows huge disrespect towards the person you are with.
Dominating a conversation
Your conversation should not be in the format of a monologue, it should be a dialogue. Of course, you would want to present yourself in the best way while advertising all your merits but keep it moderate. It should be like a pingpong game; you pass on some interesting stuff about your personality, experiences, and exchange questions. Then she does the same. The best strategy is to tell the other person some facts regarding you, then ask them about the same thing or something related to it. When they reply, find something interesting they’ve mentioned and then ask about that. This technique will help you out in keeping that conversational wheel rolling. Also, try not to ask too many questions at once in a rapid-fire way in order not to turn your date into an interview or interrogation. You should feel comfortable talking to each other, it shouldn’t be forced.
Criticizing her tastes
Let’s just assume your date is into pop music while you’re an old punk rock fan. Don’t comment on their music tastes in any negative way as your task is to have a good time, not to repel them away. If you don’t like their preference in music, you can simply say that you’re not really a fan of it and leave it at that. There is no need to rant about how their style of music is bad and give them 10 reasons why. Then compare it to your type of music and explain to them why it’s superior. That just shows you’re an egomaniac who has no empathy and disregards others around them. All people are different, and you have no right to criticize other people’s tastes or choices. You’re free to simply say that you like or dislike something though. In fact, be honest about that
and don’t feign interest in the things she likes just to try to impress her as women can find that a massively unattractive quality.
Not being a gentleman
Do you know what never goes out of style? It’s the gentleman’s way, as women love to be treated in a certain manner. So, if you’re wondering what that exactly is, then in the dating context it simply implies that your actions should always be respectful, polite and considerate. This can mean opening doors for her, pulling up her seat before she sits down or if she’s cold, offer your coat and if she’s comfortable, drape it over her shoulders.
Not a lot of men do these things nowadays, but if you treat a lady this way, you’ll immediately stand out among a sea of men trying to grab her attention. You’ll have something over the competition, the ace of spades. Though many might not admit it, most men have screwed up more dates than they care to remember in the pursuit of getting some action on the first meet. Thus, here’s a bonus piece of advice. Trying to score on your first date is never a good idea unless both the parties have different kinds of arrangements and have plans of seeing each other again.
All in all, first dates are really just about sparking curiosity, creating good vibes and presenting yourself in the best possible light. If you come across as an interesting and a really nice person, nine times out of ten, the other person will want to see you again. Now you understand what the most common mistakes on a first date are and how you can avoid them. They’re nothing mind-blowing but too many people don’t realize these simple things and ruin the date before it can even go anywhere.
Also, if even after all the cautions the first date does go wrong, then don’t worry, it happens to the best of us cause not every date can be perfect. Sometimes the worst times are disguised life lessons that will prepare you for future opportunities.

ALMOST THREE QUARTERS OF AUSTRALIAN ADOLESCENTS EXPERIENCE DEPRESSION OR ANXIETY
Almost three-quarters of adolescents in Australia experience clinically significant symptoms of depression or anxiety, research has found. The research, by Melbourne’s Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI), found that 74 per cent of Australians reported experiencing clinically significant symptoms of depression or anxiety at least once across their adolescent years between the ages of 10 and 18. Over 1,200 children from Melbourne enrolled in the study and had their symptoms of depression and anxiety tracked between 2012 and 2019. Among the participants, 64 per cent suffered from chronic depression or anxiety, which means they reported symptoms three or more times during their adolescence.
Girls were at increased risk, with 84 per cent reporting depression or anxiety symptoms at least once compared to 61
per cent of boys, Xinhua news agency reported. Ellie Robson, the lead author of the study from MCRI, described the results as concerning because mental health problems in adolescence can have serious lifelong health consequences.
“These are striking findings, particularly given how many young people experienced symptoms over multiple years of the study and how much depression and anxiety symptoms can affect young people’s functioning and can have long-lasting negative health outcomes,” she said in a media release. The study found that the onset of depression and anxiety symptoms among adolescents increased at times that coincided with educational stress, such as the transition between primary and secondary schools, exams and the end of compulsory education.
Co-author Susan Sawyer said the findings represent the highest cumulative incidence of symptoms of mental disorders ever reported across adolescents from any country. The research team will next examine the impact of reported symptoms on the health and functioning outcomes of contemporary adolescents. Last week, another study had revealed that developing antidepressant medications that target cells in the gut may open a novel path towards effective treatment of mood disorders like depression and anxiety.
Antidepressants like Prozac and Zoloft that raise serotonin levels are important first-line treatments and help many patients but can sometimes cause side effects that patients can’t tolerate,” said Mark Ansorge, Associate Professor of clinical neurobiology at Columbia University Vagelos. Ansorge noted that the study, published in the journal Gastroenterology, suggests that limiting these drugs “to interact only with intestinal cells could avoid these issues”.
Further, the team noted that the novel approach may also help pregnant women, without exposing the child. Antidepressants that raise serotonin (called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs) -- the first-line pharmacological treatments for anxiety and depression for over 30 years -- are known to cross the placenta and increase problems related to mood, cognitive, and gastrointestinal later in childhood. On the other hand, leaving depression untreated during pregnancy “also comes with risks to the children,” Ansorge said. “An SSRI that selectively raises serotonin in the intestine could be a better alternative.”
DID HUMANS INHERIT LOVE OF ALCOHOL FROM MONKEYS?
Monkeys are known to routinely consume fruit containing alcohol, shedding light on our own taste for booze, finds a study that supports the ‘drunken monkey’ hypothesis. A University of California Berkeley biologist Robert Dudley, in his book The Drunken Monkey: Why We Drink and Abuse Alcohol, released in 2014, proposed that human attraction to booze arose millions of years ago, when our ape and monkey ancestors discovered that the scent of alcohol led them to ripe, fermenting and nutritious fruit.
To explore, researchers at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) collected fruit eaten and discarded by black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) in Panama.
They found that the alcohol concentration in the fruit was typically between 1 per cent and 2 per cent by volume, a by-product of natural fermentation by yeasts that eat sugar in ripening fruit.
Moreover, the researchers collected urine from these free-ranging monkeys and found that the urine contained secondary metabolites of alcohol. This result shows that the animals were actually utilising the
alcohol for energy - it wasn’t just passing through their bodies.
“For the first time, we have been able to show, without a shadow of a doubt, that wild primates, with no human interference, consume fruit-containing ethanol,” said primatologist Christina Campbell, a CUSN professor of anthropology.
“This is just one study, and more need to be done, but it looks like there may be some truth to that ‘drunken monkey’ hypothesis - that the proclivity of humans to consume alcohol stems from a deep-rooted affinity of frugivorous (fruit-eating) primates for naturally occurring ethanol within ripe fruit,” she added.
The study, which appeared in the journal Royal Society Open Science, showed that the fruit that spider monkeys collected were from the jobo tree Spondias mombin and were a major component of the spider monkey diet.
But the fruit also has been used for millennia by Indigenous human populations throughout Central and South America to make chicha - a fermented alcoholic
beverage.
Five of the urine samples from six spider monkeys contained secondary metabolites of ethanol or drinking alcohol.
“The monkeys were likely eating the fruit with ethanol for the calories,” Campbell said. “They would get more calories from fermented fruit than they would from unfermented fruit. The higher calories mean more energy.”
However, Dudley said he doubts that the monkeys feel the inebriating effects of alcohol that humans appreciate. “They’re probably not getting drunk, because their guts are filling before they reach inebriating levels,” he said. “But it is providing some physiological benefit. Maybe, also, there’s an anti-microbial benefit within the food that they’re consuming, or the activity of the yeast and the microbes may be predigesting the fruit. You can’t rule that out.”
The need for the monkeys’ high caloric intake may similarly have influenced human ancestors’ decisions when choosing which fruit to eat, Campbell said.

NEW WAYS TO PREVENT, TREAT TYPE 2 DIABETES
Pancreatic cells, like human cells, have a limit to how much stress they can handle before they start to break down. Through overstimulation of these cells, certain stresses like inflammation and hyperglycemia lead to the onset of type 2 diabetes. As it turns out, pancreatic cell stress tolerance to two distinct types of molecular stress is correlated with DNA sequence variations that are known to raise an individual’s risk for diabetes. These findings were made by researchers at The Jackson Laboratory (JAX). Stress and inflammation may increase the risk of failure or death of the insulin-producing cells in individuals with these genetic alterations in the pancreas.
“Ultimately we want to develop new ways to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes by targeting the genes and pathways that are perturbed in people who are most susceptible to the disease,” said Michael L. Stitzel, associate professor at JAX and co-senior author of the new study with JAX professor Dugyu Ucar, published in the Oct. 8 advanced online issue of Cell Metabolism. “These findings give us new insight into some of those genes and pathways.”
The work points toward dozens of genes that connect cell stress and diabetes risk, including one that is already under investigation as a drug target for type 2 diabetes complications. When living cells face challenges, including damage, inflammation, or nutrient changes, they activate protective responses to try to cope with and reverse the stress. But over time, sustained stress can overwhelm the cells, causing them to slow down or die. In the pancreas’ islet beta cells, two types of cell stress have previously been implicated in the development of type 2 diabetes. In both cases, the stress can eventually lead islet beta cells to stop producing insulin or die off. Stitzel and his colleagues
wanted to know what genes and proteins were used by islet cells to respond to both ER stress and cytokine stress.
“Researchers have completed multiple studies looking at what molecular pathways are important in regulating insulin production in happy, healthy islet cells,” said Stitzel. “But we were working on this hypothesis that islet cells are not always happy. So what pathways are important when the cells are under stress, and how do diabetes-linked DNA sequence changes in each of us affect them?”
Stitzel’s group exposed healthy human islet cells to chemical compounds known to induce either ER stress or cytokine stress. Then, they tracked changes to levels of RNA molecules in the cells as well as how tightly or loosely packed different stretches of DNA were inside the cells--a proxy for what genes and regulatory elements are being used by the cells at any given time.
To analyze the results, the team collaborated with Ucar, a professor and computational biologist at JAX . Together, the scientists found that more than 5,000 genes, or nearly a third of all the genes expressed by healthy islet cells, change their expression in response to ER stress or cytokine stress. Many were involved in the production of proteins, which is crucial for islet cells insulin-producing role. And most of the genes were only involved in one or the other stress response, raising the idea that two separate stress pathways play a role in diabetes.
In addition, around one in eight regulatory regions of DNA typically used in islet cells were altered by stress. Importantly, 86 of these regulatory regions had been previously found to contain genetic variants in people most at risk
of type 2 diabetes.
“What this suggests is that people with these genetic variants may have islet cells that respond worse to stress than other people,” said Stitzel. “Your environment - things like diabetes and obesity--pulls the trigger with type 2 diabetes, but your genetics loads the gun.”
Stitzel hopes that the new list of regulatory regions and genes eventually lead to new drugs to prevent or treat diabetes by potentially making islet cells more resilient to stress.
The researchers homed in one gene that was altered by both ER stress. Called MAP3K5, the gene was shown to alter islet beta cell death in mice containing a diabetes-causing mutation in the insulin-encoding gene.
In the new paper, Stitzel and his colleagues showed that higher levels of MAP3K5 led to more islet beta cells dying in response to ER stress. Eliminating or blocking MAP3K5, on the other hand, made the islet cells more resilient to ER stress and less likely to die.
Early studies of Selonsertib, a drug targeting MAP3K5, have showed that it could reduce the risk of severe complications of diabetes. The new results point toward another possible role of the drug--in the prevention of diabetes in people most at risk of the disease, to help their islet cells remain functioning and alive in the face of cellular stress.
“It’s really exciting that this therapeutic is already in clinical trials but much more work is needed to understand whether the drug might be able to be leveraged in primary prevention,” said Stitzel.
COFFEE, TEA MAY PROTECT AGAINST HEAD & NECK CANCER H
Consumption of coffee and tea can lower the risks of developing head and neck cancer, including cancers of the mouth and throat, claimed a study on Monday. Head and neck cancer is the seventh most common cancer worldwide, and rates are rising in low- and middle-income countries.
The findings, based on an analysis of data from 14 studies, showed that compared with non-coffee-drinkers, individuals who drank more than 4 cups of caffeinated coffee daily had 17 per cent lower odds of having head and neck cancer overall. It also led to a 30 per cent lower risk of having cancer of the oral cavity, and 22 per cent lower odds of having throat cancer.
Drinking 3-4 cups of caffeinated coffee was linked with a 41 per cent lower risk of having hypopharyngeal cancer -- a type of cancer at the bottom of the throat), revealed the study published in the peer-reviewed CANCER journal.
“While there has been prior research on coffee and tea consumption and reduced risk of cancer, this study highlighted their varying effects with different sub-sites of head and neck cancer, including the observation that even decaffeinated coffee had some positive impact,” said senior author Yuan-Chin Amy Lee, from

Pupil size plays key role in storing memories in brain
The pupil of the eye is key to understanding how, and when, the brain forms strong, long-lasting memories, according to a mice study. Researchers from Cornell University in the US found that new memories are being replayed and consolidated when the pupil is contracted during a substage of non-REM sleep. And when the pupil is dilated, the process repeats for older memories. The team explained that the brain prevents “catastrophic forgetting” in which the consolidation of one memory wipes out another one by separating these two substages of sleep.
The findings, published in the journal Nature, showed that it could lead to better memory enhancement techniques for humans and may help computer scientists train artificial neural networks to be more efficient. Azahara Oliva, assistant professor at Cornell noted that the study proposes that “the brain has this intermediate timescale that separates the new learning from the old knowledge”.
In the study, the team equipped mice with brain electrodes and tiny eye-tracking cameras while they indulged in a variety of tasks, such as collecting water or cookie rewards in a maze. One day, the mice
learned a new task and when they fell asleep, the electrodes captured their neural activity, and the cameras recorded the changes in their pupils.
The recordings showed that the temporal structure of sleeping mice is more varied, and more akin to the sleep stages in humans than previously thought. Further, they found that when a mouse
enters a substage of non-REM sleep, its pupil shrinks, and it’s here the recently learned tasks — that is, the new memories — are being reactivated and consolidated while previous knowledge is not. In contrast, older memories are replayed and integrated when the pupil is dilated, the report said.
Ultra-processed foods may make you age faster
Love to binge on ultra-processed food (UPFs) like chips, biscuits, sausages, burgers, soft drinks, and instant noodles? Beware, these can make you age faster biologically, warned a study. A person’s biological age is a relatively new way of measuring a person’s health. It refers to how old a person seems based on various molecular biomarkers.
A person with a healthy lifestyle may have a biological age younger than their chronological age, while poor lifestyle choices, such as a diet high in UPFs, can accelerate biological ageing, said researchers from Monash University in Australia. The study, published in the journal Age and Aging, involved 16,055 participants from the US aged 20-79 and showed that for every 10 per cent increase in UPF consumption, the gap between biological and chronological age widened by approximately 2.4 months.
Participants in the highest UPF consumption quintile (68-100 per cent of energy intake in their diet) were biologically 0.86 years older than those in the lowest quintile (39 per cent or less of energy intake in their diet). Nutritional biochemist Dr. Barbara Cardoso, a senior lecturer in the University’s Department of
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food said the findings underlined the importance of eating as many unprocessed and minimally processed foods as possible.
“The significance of our findings is tremendous, as our predictions show that for every 10 per cent increase in total energy intake from ultra-processed food consumption there is a nearly 2 per cent increased risk of mortality and 0.5 per cent risk of chronic
disease over two years,” she added.
UPFs are industrial formulations typically containing ingredients not commonly used in home cooking, such as hydrogenated oils, highfructose corn syrup, flavour enhancers, and emulsifiers. These foods are high in salt, sugar, fats, and other unhealthy elements and are designed for convenience and long shelf life.

Cooking
garlic,
onions at high heat may be harmful to your heart
Cooking garlic and onions in vegetable oil at high temperatures can generate trans-fatty acids (TFA) and can prove to be detrimental to heart health, claims a study by Japanese researchers. TFAs are harmful fats that can accumulate along artery walls, restricting blood flow and increasing the risk of heart attacks. While TFAs are commonly present in processed foods, evidence suggests that they can also be created at home during cooking. Studies indicate that unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs), usually considered beneficial, can undergo trans-isomerisation -- a molecular reconfiguration that transforms them into TFAs when heated at 150 degrees Celsius or higher.
To explore, researchers from Meijo University assessed the role of isothiocyanates and polysulfides -- sulphur-containing compounds found in vegetables like garlic, leeks, onions, scallions, and shallots -- in promoting the trans-isomerisation of vegetable UFAs during cooking. The team first evaluated the effects of sulphur compounds on triacylglycerols (TAGs) in a model system using reagents. Then they tested garlic, onion, leek, cabbage, horseradish, broccoli sprouts, and vegetable oils like soybean and olive oils to simulate actual cooking processes. The results, published online in the journal Food Research International, showed that sulphur compounds significantly promote heat-induced transisomerisation of UFAs in vegetable oils. This occurs especially when cooking temperatures
are above 140 degrees Celsius.
Further, the team also assessed the role of antioxidants such as alpha-tocopherol in reducing the isomerisation of UFAs in triglycerides like triolein and trilinolein. While the addition of antioxidants significantly reduced the promotion of UFA’s isomerisation by isothiocyanates, they did little to inhibit the promotion of isomerisation by polysulfides.
“This explains that cooking polysulfiderich vegetables such as garlic and onions in vegetable oil at high temperatures can generate TFAs. The study demonstrates that garlic
and onions significantly promote the transisomerisation of UFAs,” said the team led by Dr. Masaki Honda at Meijo University. On the other hand, the release of TFAs under normal cooking conditions is minimal.
“Cooking with ingredients rich in natural sulphur compounds may increase the risk of TFA intake,” the researchers said. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), TFAs are responsible for over 278,000 annual deaths worldwide. The global health body recommends that TFA consumption should be limited to less than 1 per cent of daily energy intake.

Exercise may boost memory in elderly, benefits may last for 24 hours
Are you forgetting quite often? A brisk walk, dance, or climbing a few flights of stairs may be key to boosting your memory, and the benefits may last for a day, finds a study on Tuesday. Previous research has shown that people’s cognitive performance improves in the hours after exercise, but how long this benefit lasts is unknown.
The new study, led by University College London (UCL) researchers showed that the more moderate to vigorous physical activity (which can increase heart rate) that people aged 50 to 83 do, the better memory they are likely to have the day after. Less time spent sitting and six hours or more of sleep were also linked to better scores in memory tests the next day. The findings, published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, suggest that the shortterm memory benefits of physical activity may last longer than previously thought.
The benefits may extend “to the next day instead of just a few hours after exercise”, said lead author Dr. Mikaela Bloomberg, from the Institute of Epidemiology & Health Care at UCL. “Getting more sleep,
particularly deep sleep, seems to add to this memory improvement,” she added. The researchers explained that, in the short term,
exercise increases blood flow to the brain. It stimulates the release of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine which help a range of cognitive functions.
Previously known to last up to a few hours only after exercise, the latest study noted that other brain states linked to exercise were more long-lasting. For instance, evidence suggests exercise can enhance mood for up to 24 hours. For the study, the team analysed data from 76 men and women who wore activity trackers for eight days and took cognitive tests each day. The participants who indulged in brisk walking, dancing, or walking up a few flights of stairs, rather than a structured exercise immediate cognitive benefits which lasted longer than thought earlier.
Conversely, more time spent being sedentary than usual was linked to worse working memory the next day. “This was a small study and so it needs to be replicated with a larger sample of participants before we can be certain about the results.”

INFERTILITY AND MYTHS AROUND FOOD?
Infertility is a complex and misunderstood issue that affects millions of couples worldwide. It goes beyond the inability to conceive a child; it can be emotionally traumatic and socially isolating. Beyond physical limitations, infertility can take a toll on mental health, causing stress, anxiety, and depression. Factors such as age, lifestyle choices, and underlying health conditions can significantly impact fertility for both men and women.
Women often find themselves bombarded with myths and misinformation surrounding infertility and food, leading to unnecessary panic and stress. One common myth is that eating certain foods can either prevent or cause infertility. This has led to a frantic obsession with fertility diets, with women feeling pressured to adhere to specific eating patterns in hopes of increasing their chances of conceiving. By dispelling these myths and focusing on holistic approaches to reproductive health, women can alleviate unnecessary anxiety about their dietary choices and potential fertility issues.
Myth #1: Eating the core of a pineapple is believed to assist with implantation
Fact: Some claim eating the core of a pineapple right after ovulation can aid in implantation. Pineapple cores contain bromelain, a set of enzymes that acts as a blood thinner and has been found to possess anti-inflammatory properties. Nonetheless, there is no concrete evidence
from studies to prove that the bromelain in pineapple cores helps with implantation. Also, having fresh pineapple in your diet, rich in Vitamin C and B6 can be a beneficial way to include healthy fruit in your meals.
Myth #2: If the couple wants twins, they should eat yam
Fact: Yam consumption is believed to play a role due to its natural hormone phytoestrogen, which may stimulate multiple ovulation. However, the high twinning rate is influenced by various factors, not just yams. Eating only yams may not boost fertility. Better to consult an expert instead
of believing rumors.
Myth #3: Opting for pomegranates can improve one’s fertility
Fact: Pomegranates are believed to have positive effects on the fertility of both men and women. Due to their high antioxidant content, it is suggested that consuming pomegranates, which have long been associated with fertility, can enhance blood circulation to the uterus and thicken the uterine lining. However, further research is required to fully comprehend how antioxidants influence fertility.

I AM NOT EYING OPENING A RESTAURANT IN INDIA: CHEF VIKAS KHANNA recipe
Michelin-star chef Vikas Khanna is one of the top torchbearers of Indian cuisine. With his "haath ka hunar" and grandmother's recipes, he has successfully managed to spread the irresistible aroma of Indian spices across the US streets.
Donning a chef hat, Vikas started his culinary journey in Amritsar where he ran a catering business at the age of 17. Mishaps and setbacks were a constant theme during his initial years in professional journey, but the Amritsari lad did not quit and kept chasing his goals.
Voted as "New York's hottest chef", Vikas has so far hosted four US Presidents, cooked for the White House and famed dignitaries around the world.
In March 2024, he unveiled his restaurant 'Bungalow' in New York City, which became one of the most popular Indian eateries in US in a short span of time, courtesy of Vikas'
cooking skills.
From Hollywood star Anne Hathaway to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, 'Bungalow' has attracted the presence of celebrities across the world.
With 'Bungalow', Vikas left a footprint of Indian cuisine in the heart of US, especially after his restaurant was crowned the Michelin 2024 Bib Gourmand Award.
"I feel it was high time Indian food took to the mainstream on this scale. It's also very important that Indian cuisine shines through this. It's very important. Of course, we have a lot of naysayers, especially in our community. But I feel that there's nothing stopping Indian food from being one of the most influential impressions in America," Vikas said.
Vikas has launched various restaurants in Dubai and US. However, he is yet to open one in his homeland.
In 2000, the local banquet owned by Vikas was reportedly destroyed by the local authorities due to certain construction issues. Since then, his fans from India have wondered when he would re-introduce his homeland to the taste of Indian cuisine, that he has refined, developed and nurtured over the years.
Asked if there's any plan in his mind to open a restaurant in India, Vikas shared, "Bungalow is my last restaurant where I'm cooking 16-18 hours a day. I'm in the restaurant all the time. It's my last tribute... I've been cooking for over 40 years. And
by the time I finish this project, I'll be 50. I will use my I'll use my energy to create something even more different, more... This was my sister's dream, this was not even my dream. So, the answer is no. I was asked this question many times when you open in India. I say the energy you get in a restaurant is when you stand on your own. And it's very important that in a foreign land, the most competitive market on the planet Earth you are holding the Indian Flag there..."
He added, "Nobody can deny the power of New York City. And that is something which has more longevity. I feel that it uplifts the cuisine and currency and turns it into not just your economy, it increases the currency of the cuisine. At this stage, I've learned the difference."
Vikas' consistent efforts driven by emotional and an undying desire to put Indian cuisine on the world map have finally turned into reality. His hard work aimed at giving Indian cuisine its due recognition continues to be a fruitful affair.
Meanwhile, Vikas surprised Delhi-NCR residents by preparing several dishes at the WaysToLays Food Truck event in Gurugram. With a menu and recipes inspired by local tastes and global trends, the food truck serves a delightful array of dishes that incorporate Lay's chips in imaginative ways.
