Australia to scrutinize Aussie team Google, Facebook activities visit South India to discuss trade

SYDNEY, JULY 26: Australia on Friday said it would form a dedicated department to keep check on Facebook and Google as part of reforms to protect privacy of consumers and ensure antitrust laws are respected in the country.

The measure to control the market dominance of the technology giants and police their activities was recommended by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the antitrust watchdog for protection of consumer rights and rein in illegal anticompetitive behaviour.

It comes in the context of concerns over the power the technology companies have in the market and the influence over the people through collection of personal data of consumers, Efe news reported.

On Friday, the ACCC released 23 recommendations along with its final report on the impact of digital search engines, social media platforms and digital content aggregators on the state of competition in media and advertising services markets.

The study was commissioned by the government in 2017.

Among other measure, the watchdog has recommended establishment of a special branch of the ACCC “to pro-actively monitor and investigate potentially anti-competitive conduct by digital platforms”.

“Make no mistake, these companies are among the most powerful and valuable in the world,” Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said as he released the report on regulating of digital platforms.

The government also emphasized that digital platforms collect and use a large amount of personal information about consumers who need to be informed about the data collected as well as by whom and how it is being used.

Frydenberg said there was a need to develop a media regulatory framework to “ensure that substantial market power is not used to lessen competition in media and advertising services markets”.

ACCC chair Rod Sims in a statement said that the recommendations were “comprehensive and forward looking and deal with the many competition, consumer, privacy and news media issues we have identified throughout the course of this inquiry”.

However, Sunita Bose, Managing Director of Digital Industry Group, which represents Google, Facebook and Twitter, urged caution to the government. “We’re closely reviewing these recommendations to ensure they don’t bring unintended consequences to all digital businesses and the choice of digital products available to Australian consumers,” she said in a statement.

AMARAVATI, JULY 25: An Australian business delegation on Thursday met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and discussed the investment opportunities in the state.

The delegation led by Australian Consul General Susan Grace included 22 delegates from Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria. The delegates were from various sectors like mines, fuel, lithium batteries manufacturing, education, logistics and airport management.

Jagan Reddy assured them he would give full support that will result in the development of the industrial sector of the state. He said transparency in the governance would help in the growth of industrial sector.

The Chief Minister expressed his interest in introduction of electric buses in the state to reduce pollution and for better transportation. The Australian delegation, which was on a two-day visit, met various ministers, secretaries and entrepreneurs.

$200,000 in funds for Hindu Victorian community

MELBOURNE, JULY 30: The Andrews Labor Government is supporting Victoria’s Hindu community to hold religious and cultural events thanks to a new dedicated grants round.

Acting Minister for Multicultural Affairs Lily D’Ambrosio on Monday announced $200,000 will be made available over four years as part of the first ever Hindu Festival and Events Fund.

Almost 135,000 Victorians are Hindu, making our state home to the second largest Hindu population in Australia.

As part of the fund, groups will get support in holding events that help share, celebrate and preserve their culture and traditions.

The types of events to be supported includes performances, festivals, cultural exhibitions and celebrations of Hindu days of significance.

Successful grant recipients

will share the Hindu values of compassion, harmony and respect with the broader Victorian community through their festivals and events.

Grant applications for events held between 1 January 2020 to 30 June 2020 are now open. For more information or to apply, visit multicultural.vic.gov.au/grants.

Japanese lizard smugglers jailed in Perth

PERTH, July 29: A Japanese man caught by the Australian Border Force (ABF) trying to smuggle 13 native bobtail (or shingleback) lizards out of Australia in June has been jailed by a Perth Magistrate.

The 52-year-old was sentenced on Monday to five months imprisonment, to serve two months from the date of arrest, and a 12 month good behaviour order, after he pleaded guilty to one smuggling charge and one of animal cruelty, an ABF news release said.

His co-accused, a 28-year-old Japanese national, who was the collector of the lizards in the smuggling operation, also received a five month sentence with a two month minimum

The court was told the 52year old was the courier in the operation, having only arrived in Perth three days prior to his arrest.

Wildlife smuggling is a lucrative trade and organised criminal syndicates are involved in exporting and selling Australia’s unique native fauna overseas, particularly in Asia.

Australian bobtails can attract up to $10,000 each on the international black market.

The maximum penalty for wildlife trade offences under Australian law is 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to $210,000 for individuals or up to $1,050,000 for corporations.

Two Australians held in Bali Australia-based Instagram over cocaine trafficking model’s major meltdown after likes diasappeared

JAKARTA, JULY 23: Two Australian men arrested on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali with 1.12 grams of cocaine were paraded in front of the media on Tuesday and are facing a possible 12-year jail term, the police said.

MELBOURNE, JULY 26: An Australia-based Instagram model Mikaela Testa had a major meltdown after she realised that the Facebook-owned photo messaging app is not showing the like count on her posts anymore.

The two men -- William Cabantog and David Van Iersel were arrested last week at the Lost City Club in the island’s trendy Canggu neighbourhood, according to a police statement.

They appeared on Tuesday in orange prison suits and were led by the police with their heads bowed, followed by cameras and journalists, 9news.com reported. Both men admitted to having bought and used the drug, the police said.

In a statement issued on Monday, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed the arrests. “We stand ready to offer consular assistance ... should they request it,” the statement read.

Indonesian media reports say that charges against the two men were yet to be laid and investigations were continuing.

If charged with drug possession, Cabantog and Van Iersel could face 12 years in prison, but if found guilty of trafficking, they could face the death penalty under Bali’s strict drug laws.

John Harnden is new CEO of Melbourne & Olympic Parks

MELBOURN, JULY 31: Top sports business and major events leader John Harnden has been named as new chief executive of the Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust (MOPT).

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula on Tuesday announced Harnden would replace longstanding CEO Brian Morris, who will step down after 14 years in the role.

Earlier this week, Instagram expanded a test feature of letting users hide the like counts on their photos and videos to six more countries, including Australia.

The test feature is intended to be helpful in removing the pressure among users who are concerned about the reach of their posts and impressions.

‘MasterChef Australia’ loses its star trio

The news of their exit from the show was shared on the official Twitter handle of “MasterChef Australia”.

Confessing that Instagram is like a “mental problem”, she posted a video on her “Scandalous x” account, crying incessantly while uttering that she is going to quit social media for a while.

NEW DELHI, AUG 1: After retiring from cricket, former Australia captain Michael Clarke is now-a-days busy making people aware about asthma. His involvement in this area is linked to an incident from his personal life. Clark’s daughter Kelsey-Lee had an asthma attack once when she was three-years-old. Since then Clark became serious about the disease and invested in a company that makes asthma identification tools.

Speaking on the sidelines of the MedParliament on Tuesday, the 38-yearold shared his journey and insights in healthcare entrepreneurship and the incident which led him to work on asthma awareness “I was always interested in doing business. In the last 4-5 years of my career, when I was Australia captain, I had started to focus on different types of business. One day, my three-year-old daughter had an asthma attack and she started having breathing problems. At that point of time, I didn’t know she was suffering from asthma as nor me neither my wife had asthma.”

“The medical sector was not something which I had thought about investing but because of my daughter’s condition, I was attracted towards this sector and I wanted to help more and more people.”

Both events showcase Victoria’s growing tech sector to the world – the high-profile events were held in Sydney before the Labor Government attracted them to Melbourne, the nation’s innovation capital.

Melbourne mourns the loss of a beloved community member Vamsi Krishna Budige touched. The last time I saw him was my Album Launch/25 years of DJing party in September last year. I knew him since university days and have fond memories of him. In particular, I’d like to share the following story:

MELBOURNE: Vamsi Krishna Budige, a loving son, devoted husband and father, a friend to all, dynamic entrepreneur, and above all, beacon within the Indian community here passed away on Sunday, July 21.

Budige was the owner and head chef at Biryani Mahal, an Indian restaurant at Mount Waverly. He studied at St. Paul’s High School, Hyderabad and studied at University of Melbourne. He had also previously worked at SMS Management and Technology.

DJ Richi Madan, credited with forging a path for Bhangra in Australia, expressed his grief at the sudden demise of Budige. “He was one of the kindest souls I ever met. The huge attendance at his funeral shows how many people loved him and how many hearts he

“I’ve spoken over the years in interviews about the culture at Indian University clubs in the 1990’s of playing only R&B at their events and no Indian music, of acting like we’re Black Americans. This was something I really wanted to change in starting up the Indian nightclub scene. The day I met Vamsi, shortly after he became the new President of Melbourne Uni Indian Club, I spoke to him about this and my eyes lit up when he told me he was going to change this culture and play some Indian music at their next function. He said “Of course! We’re Indian, we should be proud of our roots and culture.” He was good to his word and there was no looking back for any of us. I pay tribute to this beautiful man and will always be grateful for his support.”

Arun Sharma, founder of Celebrate India, recalls meeting Vamsi more than 20 years ago when he was working in Federation of Indian Association. “For a young man, he showed amazing keenness to assist and learn. Since then we worked together on many projects including first ever India Day and then Diwali at Federation Square for the initial eight years. Not only did he become a very important and valuable part of the Celebrate India team but he also became a part of our family. We loved him like our

second son and are missing him badly. I know he is no more and he won’t come back but I can’t help asking Thakurji at times, “why now?” He was very young to leave.”

Santhosh Bandaru, former staff of Amba Bazaar, says, “ Vamsi budige was my God Father. He never used to say no to anything. He was too good to me. Je supported me in all aspects of my life, and I am what I am today because of him. Words are not enough to describe him.”

Other friends poured their condolences on his Facebook page. One friend wrote, “It is a real shock to hear this devasting news, I am completely speechless. Our heartfelt condolences to Vamsi Krishna Budige’s family. RIP Vamsi, may you find eternal peace. I was fortunate to know you and call you my friend, thank you for a lifetime of memories that I can keep sharing with everyone I meet. To be remembered through one’s memories and legacy is what it means to be truly immortal and so Vamsi you will always live on with us. You have touched so many lives and been

such an inspiration that there will never be a time when we do not cherish your memories. — feeling sad.”

Another friend wrote, “Vamsi Krishna Budige Anna, will miss you forever. I am at loss of words Anna. Your eversmiling face is all I can see. Missing you terribly. You were a natural Anna. You single handedly were the torch bearer of the Indian Community in Melbourne, a rare person who united every Indian in Melbourne and probably across Australia, irrespective of their background or language.”

The Telugu Association of Australia stated the entire community was in deep shock with this tragic end of such a lovely young man loved by all. “A prodigious volunteer and sponsor, Vamsi also served TAAI community as a president (200304). His family has been contributing to the community for more than 20 years now. His commitment and passion towards work and the community will always be cherished and will remain an inspiration.”

‘Samparka’, a film shot and released in Melbourne is Siddhartha Banerjee’s labour of love

MELBOURNE: Melbourne based actor-director Siddhartha Banerjee recently completed his new film ‘Somporko (Relationships)’ in Bengali language. This film, incidentally, is the first ever long-duration (65 mins) Bangla film made in Australia.

Siddhartha managed multiples roles in the film - from story, script and screenplay to dialogue, cinematography and direction.

Born and brought up in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, Siddhartha has been passionately involved in professional acting and modelling in India and Bangladesh for several years, before migrating to Australia. He was awarded with the ‘Uttam Kumar Award’ for two years in a row for Best Debutant Actor Male (1999) and for Best Actor (2000).

Samparka is Siddarth’s second work.

Earlier, he made a Bengali short film Biponno. Samparka means relationship and the film revolves around two families where the relationship runs two separate tunes, almost quite opposite to each other. Joy (Nanda Chakraborty) who has migrated to Australia six years back and married to a local Australian girl, Linda (Romina Sliwo), is constantly fighting an internal battle. He portrays a new yet common dimension of human relationship in a multicultural family set-up. One day, he accidently bumps across a Bengali lady Shiuli (Urme Bhattacharya), who is both vibrant and beautiful and lives in the same city. Shiuli works for a big organisation in Melbourne and is also happily married to Shubho (Sanjoy Chakraborty). The story starts to flow down from this point like a river to the sea, with touches dramatic twists and turns, emotional roller coaster and temperamental turbulence on the way.

Siddhartha says, this film predominantly revolves around relationships and bondage between people of both similar and dissimilar cultural background. It is this element of the movie that clearly underlines how human relationships can go both sweet and sour with cultural diversity having little role to play as it is mostly, all in our minds.

Due to lack of adequate finance and patronisation, Siddhartha had to choose the free online platforms like YouTube and Facebook for the film to be available for the public to watch it. However, on a positive note, this online release has helped the film to spread it wings across the globe in a very short time, reaching out to a huge audience.

Melbourne body builder to Australian chapter of NDA star in Indian Netflix series Alumni Association formed MELBOURNE: The National Defence Academy (NDA) is a premier joint services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force train together.

NDA alumni have formed various chapters in India.

Taking a cue from these chapters, seven motivated alumni settled in Victoria got together last April and decided to form the National Defence Academy Alumni Association, Australia Chapter (NDAAA (AC).This is the first and the only overseas chapter of the NDA alumni in the world so far.

MELBOURNE, AUG 3: Roney Singh has been part of the fitness industry for the past 16 years and has competed in more than 25 world level competitions.

Today, he is all set to pack bag and baggage and head to Mumbai to take part in a new Indian Netflix series. For reasons of confidentiality he cannot reveal more details. But November is when he begins his new innings.

“I am very excited and my hard work over the years has paid off,’ says Singh, who recently won the Muscle Model title at the Sydney show in open class weight held on July 14. The competition was organised by World Beauty Fitness fashion (WBFF).

The next Saturday on July 27, he won the first place for Tall Calls at the competition organised by the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBF) pro league Australia.

He also came second in the Open Class.

Of course, Singh is not new to competitions in body building. It is a passion he has been pursuing for the past 15 years or more. But his dream was always to become an actor and he can’t wait to see his dreams being realised this November. “I have to compete and take my physic to the next level,” he says.

India scraps article 370, Jammu and Kashmir no more a State

NEW DELHI, Aug 5: India’s Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday proposed to scrap Article 370 of the Constitution which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir and said the state will be split into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir with an Assembly and Ladakh without one.

Making a historic announcement in the Rajya Sabha that triggered bedlam, Shah said: “I am presenting the resolution to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir except the first clause 370 (1).”

Following his speech amid opposition protests, at times drowning his voice, the House was adjourned. It later resumed business.

In a separate statement, Shah said the government has proposed to reorganize Jammu and Kashmir carving out two separate Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.

He said this had been done in view of constant threats of cross border terrorism.

“There has been a long pending demand of the people to give it the status of a Union Territory to enable them to realize their aspirations,” the statement said.

“Further, keeping in view the prevailing internal security situation, fuelled by cross-border terrorism in the existing state of Jammu and Kashmir, a separate Union Territory for Jammu and Kashmir is being created,” he said.

Shah’s announcement came after days of escalating tension in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the Kashmir Valley,

where panicky residents have been buying up essential goods amid a security build up.

Also in the Rajya Sabha, Shah -whose BJP had made scrapping Article 370 an election pledge -- denied that it was 370 which linked Jammu and Kashmir with India.

Subsequently, the Jammu and Kashmir administration last week issued unprecedented orders cancelling the Amarnath Yatra midway. The order categorically asked tourists to leave Kashmir.

Leader of Opposition Azad said: “By revoking Article 370 that accords special status to Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP government has murdered the Constitution of India.”

In the last fortnight, people in Kashmir frantically stocked up supplies and medicines fearing the worst. All this while there was no clarity from the government which triggered uncertainty and anxiety among the people.

He underlined that it was the historic Article 370 which linked Jammu and Kashmir to India.

Shah said Article 370 was used as “vote bank politics” and that earlier governments lacked the political will to revoke it.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah called the decision “a betrayal of people’s trust” and amounted to “aggression”.

PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti dubbed the decision to scrap Article 370 as “the darkest day in Indian democracy”.

History created as India outlaws ‘triple talaq’ Islamic instant divorce NEW DELHI, July 30: The Triple Talaq bill criminalising instant divorce in the Muslim community was passed by the India’s Upper House Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, with the government mustering numbers for its smooth sailing in the Upper House where it still lacks majority support.

The contentious Bill was passed with 99 members voting in favour and 84 against it. It was passed by the Lok Sabha last week.

This is the second instance in recent days when the Modi government managed to come out on top in the Rajya Sabha. The controversial RTI Amendment Bill was passed last week amid a walkout by the Congress.

Replying to the debate on the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad countered criticism by the opposition parties on making Triple Talaq a cognizable offence.

He said that nobody questioned the penal provision when the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955, Dowry Act of 1961 and Section 498A were brought.

The Minister said the Hindu Marriage Act said the minimum age of the groom should be 21 and of the bride 18. A two-year jail term was provided for those violating the law. Then it was not said that it would disturb married life, he said.

Further, the law provides that a marriage will be void in case a person went for remarriage even as he or she had a spouse.

LONDON, AUG 2: A 23-year-old Indian-origin doctor has been crowned Miss England after fending off competition from dozens of other models, the media reported on Friday.

Bhasha Mukherjee, 23, from Derby, holds two different medical degrees, has an IQ of 146, making her officially a ‘genius’ and is fluent in five languages, reports The Daily Mail.

PUNE, AUG 1: Renowned Indian scientist Atish Shripad Dabholkar will take over as the new Director of the prestigious Abdul Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Italy’s Trieste, his cousin Hamid Dabholkar said here on Thursday.

The Kolhapur-born Dabholkar, 55, is the nephew of the well-known rationalist Narendra Dabholkar, who was shot dead in Pune on August 20, 2013.

She was due to start her new job as a junior doctor in a hospital in Boston, Lincolnshire, just hours after the Miss England final ended on Thursday evening.

“Some people might think pageant girls are airheads, but we all stand for a cause,” she said before the contest.

“My pageant career all started to happen while I was in the middle of studying at medical school - it took a lot of convincing for me to do it, but eventually I decided to do it to balance out my studying and give me a break.” Mukherjee was born in India.

Her family relocated to the UK when she was nine.

She went onto complete two bachelor degrees: one in medical sciences and one in medicine and surgery from the University of Nottingham. As winner of Miss England, she will be entered into the Miss World contest and will also bag a holiday to Mauritius.

Till 2010, he served as Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai besides being a Visiting Scientist at CERN and a Visiting Professor at Stanford University.

Earning fame for his research on String Theory and Quantum Black Holes, including investigations that built on Salam’s 1979 Nobel Prize-winning work on Electroweak Unification, Dabholkar joined the ICTP in 2014 on secondment from Sorbonne University and the National Centre for Scientific Research where he was a research director since 2007.

20 killed in mass shooting at Texas Walmart WASHINGTON, AUG 4: At least 20 people have been killed and another 24 injured in a mass shooting in the US city of El Paso, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has confirmed.

He described it as one of the deadliest days in the state’s history.

The massacre happened at a Walmart store on Saturday near the Cielo Vista Mall, a few miles from the US-Mexico border, the BBC reported.

A 21-year-old man is in custody and is believed to be the sole gunman. Mr Abbott praised the police officers who apprehended him.

The suspect has been named by the US media as Patrick Crusius, a resident of the Dallas area.

CCTV images said to be of the gunman and broadcast on US media show a man in a dark T-shirt wearing ear protectors and brandishing an assaultstyle rifle.

The first reports of a shooting emerged at about 10 a.m.

Police said the Walmart was “at capacity” with shoppers buying back-toschool supplies at the time of the attack.

Police spokesman Sergeant Robert Gomez said the only suspect was a white male in his 20s. No officers had fired their weapons in apprehending him, he added.

“We have secured Walmart and we

have secured Cielo Vista Mall. We don’t feel that there is a threat to the public or that there are any other shooters at this time,” Sgt Gomez said.

El Paso Police Department tweeted that blood donations were “needed urgently”.

A man who was in the shopping centre at the time of the attack recalled the moment that he found out about the shooting. “There were employees, they were coming in and they would tell me that they heard some gunshots and that people just started bolting straight into the store in order to get to cover. In the meantime I was just trying to stay calm, but I was freaking out internally,” he told a media outlet.

Opposition groups plan further demonstrations on Sunday and a city-wide strike on Monday, the BBC reported.

New AI technique to help air travellers save money

NEW YORK, AUG 2: Researchers, including one of Indian-origin, are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to track and assign a level of demand on an individual customer’s flight preferences in a way that is beneficial to the customer’s budget and privacy, as well as to the airline industry’s bottom line.

According to the researchers, the pricing models use a combination of AI techniques - machine learning and deep neural networks. The models consider various price factors such as flight origin, destination, the timing of travel and duration of a trip to assign a value on demand.

“Most airlines offer every customer the same price for a checked bag, however, not every customer has the same travel and budget needs. With AI, we can use information gathered while they shop to predict a price point at which they will be comfortable,” said Lavanya Marla, Professor at the University of Illinois in the US. “For example, a customer who is travelling for a few days may not be motivated to pay for a checked bag, but, if you discount it to them at the right price - where convenience outweighs cost you can complete that sales conversion.

That is good for the customer and good for the airline,” she said.

In the study, the research team collaborated with a European airline over a period of approximately six months to gather data and test their models.

While shopping, customers logged in to a pricing page where a predetermined percentage of customers are offered discounts on ancillary services.

“We started by offering the AImodelled discounts to five per cent of the customers who logged in,” said Marla

and study co-author Kartik Yellepeddi, co-founder of Deepair Solutions, in a joint statement.

“The airline then allowed us to adjust this percentage, as well as to experiment with various AI techniques used in our models, to obtain a robust data set,” Yellepeddi added.

According to the study, the airline began to see an uptick in ancillary sales conversions and revenue per customer, and allowed the researchers to offer discounts to all of the customers who logged in.

There was an increase seen in ancillary sales conversions and ancillary revenue per offer by 17 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively.

The research team said AI can help the airline industry move away from the concept of the “average customer” and tailor their offers to “individual travellers”.

The study will be presented at the 25th ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining in August.

SAN FRANCISCO, JULY 30: A 33-year-old woman hacker broke into over 100 million customers’ personal data in a massive breach at the financial giant and credit card issuer Capital One, exposing credit scores, balances, income information and Social Security numbers.

Paige A. Thompson, who goes by the handle “erratic,” was arrested and was scheduled for a detention hearing on Thursday, according to a report in npr.org on Monday.

Virginia-based Capital One, the seventh-largest bank in the US, acknowledged the breach. The actual crime occurred on March 22-23 this year and for as many as 140,000 individuals, the exposure included Social Security Numbers while for 80,000, their linked bank account numbers as well, said

Capital One which is a major credit card issuer in the US and also operates retail banks.

“Capital One immediately fixed the configuration vulnerability that this individual exploited and promptly began working with federal law enforcement.

“The FBI has arrested the person responsible and that person is in custody.

Based on our analysis to date, we believe it is unlikely that the information was used for fraud or disseminated by this individual. However, we will continue to investigate,” the company said in a statement late Monday.

The data leak affected approximately 100 million individuals in the US and approximately 6 million in Canada.

New CGI Raj Kumar seeks to interact more with community

I

t has been a little over a week since Raj Kumar, the new Consul General of India (CGI) to Melbourne assumed office. The chill of the winters here is a sharp contrast to India’s hot summers but Kumar is on an adjustment mode.

“Two months before or two months after would have been perfect,” he laughs, as he sits down with G’day India to share some of his thoughts on his new assignment.

India (OCI) card and not wait for visas. The government of India has already introduced the e-visa system. But if they get the OCI card, that would be much better as they won’t need visas anymore.

What can the Indian community expect from CGI’s office?

My doors are open 24X7 in case of emergency. Anybody can reach me anytime. There is no restriction at all. I am new and I would like to get the views of the Indian diaspora too on how to develop the relationship between the diaspora and India better. I look forward to making the relationship much better.

Prior to coming to Melbourne, Kumar was posted in Jalalabad (Afghanistan), considered one of the challenging postings in the Indian Foreign Service.

In Melbourne as CGI with the jurisdiction of Victoria and Tasmania, Kumar aims to strengthen the relations between two countries, especially between India and Victoria and India and Tasmania.

Importantly, Kumar also wants the large number of students present in Victoria to register themselves with the consulate.

What are your first impressions of Melbourne in particular and Australia in general?

Australia is a developed country and Melbourne is a lively city from the videos I have watched on internet. With regards to weather, I must say I have arrived at a contrast time where in India the temperature now is around 45 and it is freezing here.

Had I come two months before or two months after I would have enjoyed more.

At the moment, I am still struggling with the climatic condition. I have not yet explored the city or the state because I am still in the process of settling in. I would like to explore more and more and need the support of my Indian diaspora.

What do you intend to introduce into the Indo-Australian relationship?

My experience with Australia is new. I always wanted to come to this part of the world and the continent for the first time.

Now I have got the opportunity to be in a place which is the most liveable city in the world. So, it feels wonderful and I am looking forward to my tenure here.

Indian-Australian relationship is outstanding at the moment. We have very good relations with Australia. This excellent relationship would grow further in future.

As the new CGI, what do you see as your primary role?

The role of a diplomat is to bring two countries closer. My aim is to serve my nation, my countrymen here and Australia in general. We have around 50,000 students in my consular jurisdiction in Victoria and Tasmania. My primary responsibility is to look after them well, in case they have any problem, they can reach me anytime. Our doors are open 24/7 for any Indian who has a problem. Through this medium I would like to request all Indians, particularly students who have come to this country, to register with us. If we have their information, we can reach out to them easily. There are many students who have not registered with us

and in case they need assistance, it will be very difficult for us to reach out to them.

What made you decide a career in diplomacy?

To be honest when I submitted my application for the competition, I was not aware of what the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) entailed. I saw it as Videsh Sewa (foreign service) and kept that as my number one preference. Later on, when I joined the service, I realised it was the prime service as far as Government of India is concerned at that time. The IFS is a wonderful service where you can serve the nation not only in India, but you can do whatever you want to do for the nation from outside India. To bring people of two nations closer – that is a great responsibility.

How does your past experience affect your outlook as new CGI to Melbourne?

My past experience will be used to develop new relationships between India and Australia and particularly India and Victoria and Tasmania. I have worked in many missions and got lots of experience, but this mission is different for me. We have a large number of Indian diaspora and we have to fulfil the requirements of the diaspora and serve them. Our doors are opened for any problem with regard to visas, passports and other consular services. Our consulate staff has also been rendering the services of emergency cases regularly from a long time. Last Friday, I received a call from somebody I don’t know, sadly he had a tragedy in his family and he wanted visa immediately. I advised my officer to attend to that query and the visa was immediately granted.

Study links extramarital affairs with professional misconduct NEW YORK: People who cheat on their spouses are significantly more likely to engage in misconduct in the workplace, a study said.

According to the findings published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers from the US looked at the records of police officers, financial advisers, whitecollar criminals and senior executives who used the Ashley Madison marital infidelity website.

Operating under the slogan, “Life is short. Have an affair,” Ashley Madison advertises itself as a dating service for married people to have “discreet encounters”.

“This is the first study that’s been able to look at whether there is a correlation between personal infidelity and professional conduct, and we find a strong correlation, which tells us that infidelity is informative about expected professional conduct,” said researcher Samuel Kruger from the University of Texas.

The study found that Ashley Madison users, studied in professional settings, were more than twice as likely to engage in corporate misconduct. The researchers investigated four study groups totalling 11,235 individuals using data on police officers, financial advisers, white-collar criminals, CEOs and CFOs.

Even after matching misconduct professionals to misconduct-free individuals with similar ages, genders and experiences and controlling for a wide range of executive and cultural variables, the researchers found that people with histories of misconduct were significantly more likely to use the Ashley Madison website.

Their findings suggest a strong connection between people’s actions in their personal and professional lives and provide support to the idea that eliminating work place sexual misconduct may also reduce fraudulent activity.

“Our results show that personal sexual conduct is correlated with professional conduct.

“Eliminating sexual misconduct in the work place could have the extra benefit of contributing to more ethical corporate cultures in general,” Kruger said.

GETTING MARRIED IN AUSTRALIA

Registry of Information Online (RIO)

The Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) has recently introduced Registry of Information Online (RIO). RIO enables marriage celebrants to submit marriage documents online, and removes the requirement to submit the NOIM form and other documents in hard copy to the Victoria BDM. This follows New South Wales and Queensland BDMs, who introduced similar electronic systems several years ago. As more state/territory BDMs introduce electronic systems that enable celebrants to submit marriage documents online, it is important that celebrants are aware of their record keeping responsibilities.

It is important to remember that part of a marriage celebrant’s record-keeping obligations is to retain their copy of the official certificate of marriage for a period of six years from the date the marriage is solemnised. The Form 15 certificate record of use form must also be kept for a period of six years from the last entry on the form. If more convenient, these documents can be kept electronically.

There is no requirement under the marriage legislation for marriage celebrants to retain hard copies of the second official certificate of marriage, NOIM or DNLI or any supporting documents such as statutory declarations if these documents have been lodged online. These marriage documents are to be forwarded and lodged online in some

cases to the relevant BDM within 14 days of solemnising the marriage. Any other hardcopy documents, such as divorce orders and parental consents, are also not required to be kept once lodged online.

Once the NOIM and Declaration of No Legal Impediment and other documents as needed have been forwarded to the BDM through their online systems, it is recommended that the hard copy of the marriage paperwork be retained until the marriage has been registered. At that point, if a marriage celebrant wishes to dispose of the hard copy documents, then they should do so securely, ensuring that any personal information is adequately protected. Available technology enables documentation to be completed electronically, including receiving, sighting and lodging marriage documents.

If you got married in India, a divorce in Australia has few challenges

G

irish and Jaya (names changed) met and fell in love while working in Mumbai. After two years of marriage, they migrated to Australia on a permanent residency visa. But life in Australia did not prove to be a bed of roses for them. They decided to go separate ways after 10 years of marriage. But with joint assets in India and Australia and having been married in India, they were not sure if an Australian court would grant them divorce.

Like Girish and Jaya, many couples are faced with this dilemma.

According to lawyers Srinivas Maganty and Yen Hua Tan you are eligible to apply for divorce in Australia? Yes, because your marriage will generally be recognised in Australia if your marriage was valid under Indian laws.

If both parties to the marriage consent to the divorce, a joint application for divorce may be made to the Federal Circuit Court (“Australian Court”) subject to the requirements above.

“In determining whether the Australian court is the appropriate forum to hear the divorce proceedings and whether the Australian court has jurisdiction to grant the divorce order you are seeking, the court considers a number of factors, including whether:

If your spouse lives inside or outside of Australia and is not prepared to sign a joint application for divorce, you may still be able to make an individual (solo) application for divorce to the Australian Court provided you meet the requirements listed above.

Your spouse (the respondent in the divorce application) may contest the solo application

● There are family related proceedings already on foot in India; ● The proceedings in Australia are “oppressive and vexatious” so as to justify a stay; ● The orders made by the Australian courts are recognised in India; ● The issues and matters in question may

(ii) You have been married for more than two (2) years. If you have been married for less than two (2) years, then a counselling certificate needs to be obtained or leave must be sought from the Court to dispense with the need for the counselling certificate. (iii) If there are children of the marriage or stepchildren to whom the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth) applies, the court will only grant a divorce if it is satisfied that proper arrangements are made for the care, welfare and development of the children.

This means providing information about who they live with, spend time and communicate with, the provision of financial support, their health and education.

The court will make an order if it is satisfied that there is no reasonable likelihood of a resumption of cohabitation.

If the parties were married under the Hindu Marriage Act, only grounds under the Hindu Marriage Act for divorce would be relevant and applicable. Accordingly, a divorce granted on any other grounds (such as irretrievable breakdown of marriage under Australian law) would not be recognised in India unless the exceptions set out below are met.

The Supreme Court of India has held that an Australian Divorce Order is only recognised in India if the following exceptions apply: ● You file for divorce if your spouse in domiciled in Australia and the ground upon which the divorce is granted is a ground for divorce under Indian law; or ● You file a joint divorce application in Australia in which your spouse consents to an order for divorce; or ● Your spouse voluntarily and effectively submits to the Australian jurisdiction and contests the application on a ground under the Indian law.

To make an application for divorce in Australia, Magantu and Tan cite the following criteria: Under the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth), you will be eligible to apply for divorce on the ground that your marriage has broken down irretrievably and if you can establish that: (i) Either you or your spouse regard Australia as your home and intend to live here indefinitely or are an Australian citizen by birth, descent or grant of citizenship or ordinarily live in Australia and have done so for the past twelve (12) months before filing for divorce; and you have been separated from your spouse for twelve (12) months before you apply for the divorce (you can be separated while living under one roof); and

Is Australia the appropriate forum for the divorce?

Maganty and Tan, say “You may generally institute proceedings as long as you can comply with the requirements listed above.

“However, if jurisdiction is challenged in the divorce proceeding, the court must consider whether or not an Australian Court is an appropriate forum for seeking divorce.

The Court will apply the test of whether it is a “clearly inappropriate forum” in which to determine the divorce proceedings and will consider whether another forum is available in India which has and can exercise jurisdiction in proceedings for a divorce.

If the court finds that the Australian Court is a “clearly inappropriate forum”, the divorce proceedings are likely to be stayed and you may only be able to seek a divorce in India.

“This again poses another issue, as the grounds for divorce in Australia and India differ greatly, and you may not have a basis to obtain a divorce in India on the Indian grounds for divorce.”

Recognition of the Australian Divorce order In the event that an Australian Court grants a divorce, the order may or may not be recognised or valid in India, depending on the circumstances.

The Indian Code of Civil Procedure 1908 permits the recognition of a foreign judgment as long as the order is final and conclusive. However, the foreign judgment (e.g. Australian divorce order) will not be

It is important to note that the only ground for divorce recognised in Australia is a no-fault ground of “irretrievable breakdown” of the marriage.

The grounds of divorce under section 13 of the Hindu Marriage Act include, but are not limited to adultery, cruelty, conversion, unsoundness of mind, virulent and incurable leprosy, entering new religious order, presumption of death, non-compliance with judicial separation order or decree of restitution of conjugal rights. The Hindu Marriage Act does not include “irretrievable breakdown” as a ground for divorce.

Whilst you can apply for divorce in Australia, you should bear in mind the foregoing issues in relation to jurisdiction that may arise. We would therefore recommend seeking legal advice before proceeding with your matters in the Australian courts.

Meet Shashi Singh,

perhaps the first India-born female

winemaker in Australia

W

hen Red Hill Estate winemaker Shashi Singh started her extraordinary career more than two decades ago, it was a field that was totally new. Starting her first vintage brought an adrenalin rush. “I never wanted this vintage to end. I loved what I was doing.” She found her calling. Today, Singh produces two labels Avani and Amrit that have found their place in some of the best restaurants in Australia and abroad.

Singh’s son Rohit, who is now following the footsteps of his mother while still pursuing a career in accountancy says, “From a business perspective, once we converted this vineyard 100 percent to Shiraz grapes we were really able to focus ourselves and provide a point of difference in the market.”

From 2009 through to 2015, Singh was focussed only on making Shiraz through its popular label Avani, the grapes of which are grown in the estate itself. In the past four years, she has expanded her production to make Amrit, her second brand, which includes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and skin contact Pinot Gris – all from grapes they bring from other sites in the Peninsula. But the winemaking is consistent across both brands and made with little intervention at the property.

It was in the early 1980s that Singh moved to Australia following her chef husband who was based in the Mornington Peninsula. The initial years were spent helping her husband in his restaurant business and devoting more time towards raising her two young children who were born here.

One the children got older, she decided to study winemaking. Living in the Peninsula and home to some of the very fine wines in Australia, she found herself on a path that has steered in the right direction for over 20 years now.

It was working in her husband’s restaurant Siddhartha (later called Tulsi) in the Peninsula and studying the parings of different wines with food and visiting different wineries that kindled her interest in wines. Singh thought one can do small, unique things in wine and still be appreciated, shared and enjoyed.

A Master’s degree holder in Chemistry from India, Singh enrolled at the Charles Stuart University and went on to complete a double degree in wine, science and viticulture. Alongside her studies, she also worked as an apprentice wine maker for eight years with Philips Jones, owner of Bass Phillip Wines, and reputed to be Australia’s foremost maker of Pinot Noir.

It was a happy co-incidence when she bought her 10-acre property Red Hill at the Peninsula in 1998, an already established vineyard producing Pinot Chardonnay, Shiraz and Merlot. For the first 8-10 years, Singh was

Singh says it is making the wines speak of the site. This is the simple explanation she offers as to why her wines match very well with all kinds of food. “They have balance, structure and intensity. They are an original expression of the land on which it is raised.”

managing the property, studying and getting work experience. Incorporating good farming practices at first came from her own intuitive observations of the land. Growing up in Haryana, the farming experience there had a big influence on her. When she changed from conventional farming to organic and biodynamic farming in 2004, Singh says it not only brought about a change in the quality of her wines but also improved the plant health of all other fruit trees on the property. What’s more, it enriched the eco life on the farm with different birds and insects.

However, the most important change was seen in the compacted soil as it started to gain more structure and frailty. “This is one of the farms that is not irrigated at all, it’s dry farming.

We rely very much on the rains,” explains Singh, adding, “But we are very lucky at the Mornington Peninsula to have clay as our subsoil and salt and that means it is able to hold on to the moisture. My job is to preserve the moisture and I work on ways to do it such as mulching.

For me, looking after the soil is of utmost importance.”

Interestingly, that’s where she derived the name of her first brand Avani, which in Sanskrit means mother earth. “It’s all about looking after our mother earth,” Singh

philosophises. “It is so forgiving that we are amazed how quickly the farm has changed.

The soil changed first, then the plant health and then the fruits.”

In 2007, Singh realised Shiraz was the best varietal expression from her site as it was cooler and started making the change – planting, replanting, grafting, et al. Cooler site means it allows maximum hang time of the grapes from the vine. “It is important because you want to maximise the flavour development within the grapes. What we found is that through biodynamic agriculture, we were able to get early physiological ripening on this site and we have a long hang time which enables us to grow fruit which has great intensity of flavour and great quality,” explains Singh.

Today the whole vineyard is dedicated to Shiraz. There are 12,000 lines planted which is comparable to some of the Grand Cru vineyards in France, says Devendra.

However, not many wine growers on the Mornington Peninsula are able to grow super cool climate Shiraz. This is where Singh’s winemaking technique and working with Phillip Bass marry well.

“In terms of our total production we are pretty boutique. We produce about 1500 cases (a case being 12 bottles) a year across all the different varieties. We are quite focussed in what we are doing,” says Rohit.

Singh is helped by her husband and children when it comes to the business side of things. As a small private company, the Singhs don’t talk revenues or sales but their wines have been well received by key sommeliers and stocked in a number of reputed restaurants locally such as Point Leo Estate, Jackalope, Ten Minutes

The Singhs have been exporting in small batches to the UK, Hongkong, Shanghai and to Osaka but have just recently started to look at exporting more places. “We found that the natural winemaking and the biodynamic agriculture is something of a focus to the Asian markets as they appreciate wines that are made and grown that way.”

For the Singh’s, it’s been quite an evolution over the last 20 years but one where the small sustaining ties of family, ethical hard work and quality of their work seem logical and rewarding.

How a small UTTARAKHAND town is becoming a major tourist destination W hen one reaches Dhanaulti -- a picturesque site in the Garhwal region of ‘Devbhoomi’ (Gods’ abode) Uttarakhand -- one cannotbut feel the fresh breeze gushing through deodar trees and emitting an earthy, woody aroma. This is when you know you have left behind the hustle and bustle of the crowded city.

With Mussoorie - the Queen of the Hills - becoming over-crowded, it is starting to lose its charm and people are now wanting to explore other options. Located just 25 km away is Dhanaulti which is fast emerging as the next big tourist hill station.

“Back then I didn’t know the potential of Dhanaulti becoming a major tourist destination. I bought the land for leisurely purposes but now I see a lot of tourists from bachelors to families,” he said.

“If one wants to cherish nature at its best, experience fresh air, drink the mineral water coming directly from the Himalayas, then Dhanaulti is the place to be.

“But, say it a boon or a bane, it is fast getting commercialised and we have been seeing a lot more tourists than before. Though they are good for our business, people leave behind a trail of garbage which is very difficult to clean up. It is ruining the natural beauty of the Himalayas,” Anil Kumar, owner of Burans Breeze hotel, said.

Another hotelier, Rakesh Garg, owner of Silver Dew, bought land here in 1997 when Uttarakhand was still a part of Uttar Pradesh but established a hotel only recently when Dhanaulti started seeing tourists.

Ajay Pawar, who is a native and handles several hotels in the area, said the hotel business here is going good. “People are liking this place because of its peaceful and chilly environment and the privacy that it offers.

“Several people are coming here and demanding rooms or cottages which are isolated and close to nature. They don’t come here for luxury, they come here to

get close to nature, to hear the birds chirp and for the fresh cool breeze.”

“People love this place so much that they want to buy land here but most of it has already been bought and new hotels are coming up there. The prices of land have also shot up in merely last 2-3 years.”

“People are very fascinated with the trees, they come and take pictures with them. We also make fresh chutneys and jams with the fruits,” he said.

Gambhir Singh, a farmer who now runs a confectionery shop, said people are shifting from agriculture activities to work in hotels. Even if a person washes utensils in the hotel, he can make more than what he makes in agriculture, he added.

Vinita Chouhan, member of a self-help group based out of Mussoorie, has put up a shop in Buranskhanda as the place has started witnessing lots of tourists.

They have also set up shops in Dhanaulti, Mussoori, the Dehradun trade fair, and the India International Trade Fair in Delhi.

Painting a gloomy picture for the future of farming on the hills, he said the new generation here does not prefer farming work because of increasing costs, risks associated with it, government’s apathy, and hard work involved which don’t pay off.

“We sell woollen clothes and traditional Garhwali food items like ‘Urad dal pakora’, ‘Jhangore Ki Kheer’, ‘Mandve Ki Roti’, and ‘Kandali Ki Sabzi’.”

T20: Raw talent Saini stars on debut as India beat West Indies

LAUDERHILL (FLORIDA), AUG 3: Seamer Navdeep Saini starred on debut with a three-wicket haul as India beat West Indies by four wickets to win the first of the three T20 internationals here on Saturday.

Saini made a memorable international debut by grabbing two important wickets off consecutive deliveries to help India restrict the West Indies to 95/9 in 20 overs after skipper Virat Kohli asked the Windies to bat first.

Coming to bowl in the fifth over after Washington Sundar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar had removed openers John Campbell and Evin Lewis for a pair of ducks, Saini (3/17) snared the wickets of Nicholas Pooran (20) and Shimron Hetmyer (0) off back-to-back deliveries to reduce the hosts to 28/4 after five overs.

“I don’t think you understand the premise of the joke. The joke is that Virat Kohli can’t play in the Ashes because he’s Indian. Thus it would be a silly statement for me to compare his Ashes runs to those of Rory Burns, an Englishman. It elicits a response of surprise,” Neesham said.

Luckily, the new 330i keeps the claim alive. Powered by a 190kW 4-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed sport automatic transmission, ample acceleration is just a foot-stomp away.

The 400Nm of torque makes the 330i feel like a dominant force off the line. It certainly isn’t a slouch around the bends either. While there was no M-adaptive suspension on our test vehicle, the ride was excellently balanced and kept the chassis flat when thrown into a curve.

While the steering feels on-point around corners, power is quite limited when exiting; Quite disappointing as the exit is the most important spot for power delivery. Somewhat surprisingly, the sporty 19-inch wheels provide a smooth and grippy ride. The brakes were also a

Often times these models fill a niche in the automotive market that was left previously unsatisfied. For Volkswagen this model is the Golf, for Honda, the Civic and for BMW, the 3-Series. With the 3-series name spanning over four decades, it’d be hard to believe that they don’t have the sportsaloon formula down to a T. With the 2019 and 2020 model year, BMW have introduced the newest iteration of the 3-series. The new 3-series is, yet again, the prized pony of the new lineup and coursing with prestigious BMW lifeblood. There is absolutely no doubt that the newest 3-series is the successor to a long lineage of purpose built automobiles.

Sitting in the lower quadrant of the new 3-series model range is the 2019 BMW 330i. Now gone is the underpowered and unenthusiastic base 320i model of the previous generation. With that being said, the 330i doesn’t look or feel confined to the lower end of the BMW totem pole. In fact, the 330i is a pretty remarkable bang for your buck at $70,900.

From a distance, the silhouette of the 2019 330i is unmistakably BMW. The flowing body contours seem to wrap around the entirety of the car in a cyclical way, hinting towards tried and true BMW design. In the spirit of retaining decades old design cues, the 330i displays prominent front kidney grilles, albeit with a more angular shape, and BMW’s signature Hofmeister kink along the rear windows. While some of the styling is clearly reminiscent of other competing manufacturers, looking at you Lexus, it is evident that the designers took care in delivering a unique and interesting product.

While BMW has held true to a great deal of 3-series character traits, the interior of the 2019 330i is certainly a step beyond what we’ve come to expect from an entry level BMW sport-sedan. Where the interior of the previous generation 3-series felt like an upscaled Mini Cooper, the interior of the 2019 330i feels like that of a slightly muffled 5-series of a much higher class.

It really is the subtle details that make the most difference in the case of the 330i’s interior. Most of the knobs, buttons and accents are finished in a beautiful brushed aluminum, opposed to the cheap

plastic of the generation before. Some elements of the aluminum-bolstered interior redesign are no-doubt borrowed from the competition. The centrally mounted start/ stop button and infotainment selector dial seem to be lifted from an Audi, but still retain a BMW twist.

The dash has taken an entirely digital form, with speedometer and tachometer information displayed prominently on the outer edges. The digital cluster really shines when it comes to customisability.

Navigation, media information and vehicle statistics can all be displayed, front-and-center, to your liking. Paired with a heads-up display that projects an equally customizable array of information on the front windshield, you truly do feel surrounded by helpful and unobtrusive technology. The heads-up display is even more impressive in the diesel variant, with an astounding amount of windshield real estate dedicated to displaying speed, revs and other pertinent information. These are features you are unlikely to find in any other base model vehicle.

As you probably would have guessed, technology is certainly a primary focal point in the 2019 330i’s interior experience. The enormous 12.3 inch central display is the powerhouse for media setting and controls, running BMW’s new iDrive 7 operating software. While the interface is intuitive, it relies heavily on using the touchscreen to navigate; not exactly ideal for on-thego use. Furthermore, many of the interior buttons lack the elegantly tactile ease that you would expect from a luxury brand. An annoyance that repeatedly reared its ugly head came in the form of the A/C control buttons. With the controls being so small, and button based instead of a traditional dial, making simple air-con adjustments was a chore.

The 330i’s autodrive feature will undoubtedly bring a smile to your face if you haven’t experienced the tech firsthand.

Watching the steering wheel move independently is something genuinely surreal. Despite the elevated nerves from letting technology take control, the experience feels oddly natural as the autodrive feature does a wonderful job of following traffic in a safe way. With that being said, autodrive is undoubtedly a freeway aimed feature and probably wouldn’t fare too well on suburban streets.

I did come to trust it, just maybe not that much yet.

Just for kicks and added technological bragging rights, BMW included 360 panoramic parking assist on the 2019 330i. It truly does give you confidence to reverse without looking in a mirror at all. Of course a good driver wouldn’t use this as a crutch, but the overhead birds-eye view surround cameras definitely add some extra assurance if you’re sliding into a tight spot.

While the space-age tech is most often a welcome addition to the new 3-series, there are a few areas that fail to meet the expectations of a premium sedan. The lane assist feature felt like more of a burden than a safety feature. On the highway, slight drifts near parallel lanes will be met with a dramatic correcting nudge, which might be a bit extreme. The lack of radar cruise control, a standard feature on many competing models, is quite disappointing when compared to some of the other standard technology included in the new 3-series.

The presence of extremely high quality materials elevates the 330i’s interior to compete with vehicles twice the price.

The M-Sport steering wheel provided on our test vehicle is lightyears improved over that of the diesel variant, with a thick, merino-leather wrap that feels natural in the palm. The bolstered seats have clearly been designed with longevity in mind, with added accented stitching and segmented areas to prevent uneven wear. Even the storage space seems to be manufactured with elegance in mind, with a somewhat oddly placed wireless charging tray under the central climate controls, the space is pleasantly large and shrouded by leather.

spot of praise, stopping the 330i as fast as it can accelerate.

As far as the typical 3-series formula is concerned, the 2019 330i certainly fulfills the criteria of comfort and sportiness, leaving one crucial piece: Practicality.

As a sport oriented saloon, the 2019 330i allows quite a bit of room to sprawl out. The 14-way front seats allow for ample legroom for driver and passenger. The front cabin feels increasingly more spacious with the large sunroof in the open position. A mesh slide cover would have been a more ideal solution, rather than a block out cover, but the increased size is quite a nice addition.

The rear seats are also fit for three adults to sit without any awkward squirming. BMW has always touted that 3 full-sized golf bags can fit in the boot of any 3-series and the 2019 330i is no exception. The tried and true BMW 40/20/40 folding seats allow for a 480-litre boot; plenty of space for weekend adventures. While space is ample, there are quite a few cracks and crevices that smartphones and other trinkets to get lost in. My only other gripe is the underwhelming cargo hooks that might make loading anything more than two bags a hassle.

BMW had a lot to live up to with the newest iteration of the 3-series. It can be a make or break for a distinguished manufacturer to redesign a model that has defined a brand for decades. With the new 3-series platform, I am pleased to say that BMW has largely succeeded. Even on the lower end of the 3-series range with the 330i, you get the elegant and premium driving experience that BMW has been widely renowned for in the past.

Published in the journal Psychological Science, the study analysed over two million electronic spending records - from credit, debit cards and online transactions - from more than 2,000 volunteers.

Our findings demonstrate for the first time that it is possible to predict people’s personality from their spending, said study coauthor Joe Gladstone from the University College London.

The participants also completed a personality survey that included questions measuring materialism, self-control, openness to

experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism.

The researchers used a machine learning technique to analyse whether participants’ relative spending across categories was predictive of specific traits. Overall, the cor-

relations between the model predictions and participants’ personality trait scores were modest.

Playing video games can 80% firms in India facing make you more creative leadership talent shortage

laying video games may not be as bad as we always thought and certain games that foster creative freedom can help in increasing creativity, researchers say.

“It’s not just that Minecraft can help induce creativity. There seems to be something about choosing to do it that also matters,” said Douglas Gentile, Professor at the Iowa State University.

In the experimental study published in the Creativity Research Journal, the researchers analysed 352 participants.

They compared the effects of playing Minecraft, with or without instruction, to watching a TV show or playing a race car video game.

There is no clear explanation for this finding but there could be some possible reasons why the instructed Minecraft group scored lower, said study lead author Jorge Blanco-Herrera from the varsity.

After 40 minutes of play or watching TV, the participants completed several creativity tasks. To measure creative production, they were asked to draw a creature from a world much different than Earth.

More human-like creatures scored low for creativity and those less human-like scored high.

It was found that those given the freedom to play Minecraft - a game that allows players to explore unique worlds and create anything they can imagine without instructions were the most creative while those instructed to be creative while playing Minecraft were the least creative.

“The instructions may have changed subjects’ motivation for play. Being told to be creative may have actually limited their options while playing, resulting in a less creative experience.

“It’s also possible they used all their ‘creative juices’ while playing and had nothing left when it came time to complete the test,” he said.

Winners must choose their friends wisely

esearchers have found that friends in high places may get you recognised but ultimately harm your chance at glory.

Being friends with an award juror can increase a person’s chance of being nominated but decrease their chances of being selected as the victor, according to the study published in the Academy of Management Journal.

“These findings should invite some healthy cynicism among those who still have unconditional faith in the universalistic principles that are supposed to inspire meritocratic institutions, but should also come as hopeful news to those who have long lost that faith,” said Simone Ferriani, Professor at the University of Bologna.

For the study, researchers combined statistical analysis of eight years of decisionmaking data from the most prestigious Norwegian advertising industry competition with industry member interviews and sought to understand how relationships between jurors and entrants affect competition results.

Three relationship dynamics were used to understand how jurors’ decisions are influenced direct ties -- the extent to which jury members tend to favour candidates with whom they have worked in the past.

Reciprocity -- the extent to which jury members tend to favour candidates from whom they have themselves been favoured in the past.

Cliquishness -- the extent to which jury members tend to favour candidates who are part

of the same network clique as the jury members.

The researchers found that while all three dynamics can improve a candidate’s chance of receiving an honourable mention, only reciprocity boosts their chances of being the victor.

“Having a direct tie to, or being a part of the same clique as an award juror can help candidates be shortlisted or nominated but then actually prevent them winning,” he said.

“This, we believe, is because people in charge of granting prestigious honours may be driven by self-serving relational interests, as much as the genuine desire to signal their moral integrity and deflect potential inauthentic concerns away,” he added.

Other commonly cited reasons for decreased activity included a partner’s medical condition, a partner’s sexual dysfunction, the woman’s own physical health problems, and menopause-related symptoms.

Our Art Guru says, try and learn through your eyes and ears but practice with your mind and soul. So, in your next class, catch a breath and carefully watch, listen and learn.

You have probably heard the argument before that art and culture is important because it preserves our heritage, provides a medium for artistic expression, and so on.

From traditional song and dance to modern music and film, the art and culture of our many communities within India has been discovered, recorded, invented and re-invented in many ways. Regardless, in most cases we see our art and culture as a mirror to our history.

Nonetheless, art and culture also form our present identity.

Reinvention has in part involved mergence with other cultures and their artistic forms. Here in Australia, this has seen the dawn

of a unique Aussie – Indian Identity.

elbourne-based classical dancers Roshni Vellore and Uthra Ramachandran and their guru Dr Chandrabhanu OAM talk about Parampara: The Making of Dance, which bridges classical and newly developed contemporary works. The performance was recently held at the MTC and received much applause.

Chandrabhanu is no stranger to the classical dance scene in Melbourne.

His school Bharatalaya Academy on Richmond’s Swan Street was founded in 1973 and today continues to produce a new generation of dancers who have formed a new youth company the Jambudvipa.

Chandrabhanu has created over 40 full length works in the Bharatnatyam, Odissi and contemporary dance genres. His ability lies in very conscious awareness of the development of Bharatnatyam and Odissi within the Australian context, and also drawing from the traditions that were transplanted from India to Australia. Nowadays he spends more time choreographing and Parampara is one among the many that he is involved in.

With over 14 years’ experience in dancing, Roshni studied Bharatanatyam at the Chandrabhanu Bharatalaya Academy.

In 2007, she commenced Odissi training and performed her Manch Pravesh (a culminating event for students of Odissi dance) in 2012. She has performed in several productions over the years and has jointly received the Natya Kala Best Overall Performance award in 2015 with Uthra Ramachandran for Geeta Govinda Part 1 and received Odissi class awards in 2007 and 2018.

Uthra commenced training in the Vazhuvoor style of Bharathanatyam at the age of five in Botswana, Africa. She presented Arangetram, which is the debut performance for Bharatanatyam in 1998 before migrating to Australia with her family in 1999. In 2001 she joined the Chandrabhanu Bharatalaya Academy and continued training in Bharatanatyam. Since 2007 she has focused solely on Odissi and has had the opportunity to perform in several shows and productions. Their recent performance at the MTC also had Spanish Flamenco dancer Laura Uhe, herself an accomplished and experienced performer and teacher, where the audience were given a chance to see the merging of cultures in dance.

In conversation with Roshni, Uthra and Chandrabhanu.

What was the inspiration behind Parampara?

Uthra & Roshni: We wanted to raise money for JAIA (Jambudvipa Youth Association of Indian Arts). JAIA is the non-profit part of the school which stages professional level productions for senior dancers. It is our way to continue to connect and share with our heritage. Profits from Parampara will go to support future performances by dancers of the academy.

Since its founding under the guidance of Chandrabhanu, JAIA has staged a number of major productions in both styles of dance with professional-level dancers including “Mariamman” (2013), “Ras Leela” (2013), “Geeta Govinda Part 1” (2014), “Geeta Govinda Parts 2 and 3” (2017) and now “Parampara – The Making of Dance” (2019).

How does it bridge classical and newly developed contemporary works?

Chandrabhanu: I’ve wanted to do this program as an example of the fact that choreographers and people who actually make dance sometimes get overlooked, because people think it is “traditional” dance. That word “traditional” in India is a curse really because we say “by

tradition, this is the way we have to do it”. I am looking at the genius of people in the past who have been gurus and have choreographed. I am very lucky in the sense that I have had very good gurus who were encouraging me to choreograph work. And so throughout my whole time in Australia I’ve been observing the general dance community where there is always this emphasis on innovation, particularly in Western dance.

What about the Flamenco piece in Parampara, is that fusion?

Chandrabhanu: I wouldn’t still call the Flamenco piece fusion. Dance is dance. Too many people think if you do Bharatanatyam, you don’t do Odissi or Kathak. It’s all dance and just different ways of moving. The human body loves to move and express itself. I have been to Spain five years in a row, listened to a lot of Spanish music and watched a lot of Spanish dance. Like Indian dance, they have their own issues with different schools and regional differences. But they are still very proud of their lineage of teachers, their parampara. What I find about Flamenco is that it is very innovative. Each generation has its own way of expressing themselves through dance. Flamenco is said to have an Indian origin from gypsies who came from northern India to Spain. Also, when the Jews were expelled during the

Reconquista period, they came to India, and then they went back to Spain. So, there are already different cultural elements in Flamenco, and Indian dance is the same.

We can’t say that it’s been traditional for 2000 years, it has changed. For instance, the Tanjore quartet in classical terms were influenced by Dikshitar, who was very innovative. Dikshitar revolutionised Carnatic music by introducing the Melakarta raga system. Today, from an academic point of view, we think Dikshitar was a very contemporary composer. In the same sense, there is a kind of merging of cultures within Flamenco and I want to make that connection with Indian dance as well. With Odissi or Bharatnatyam, our rhythms are a little bit more complex than Flamenco, but there’s always the bravado, the quality of performance, showmanship and passion the dancers have.

Do you feel Indian classical dance has isolated itself from the wider cultural community?

Chandrabhanu: I’m very sceptical of what has happened to the arts generally in Australia. The last few governments have not encouraged the arts at all, so you will find that arts funding has gone down. You only find mainstream funding for the big companies. In terms of grassroots level, it is really low. We are now in a position where we are seen as “ethnic” dancers rather than being part of the cultural exploration of Australia. In the 90s, Bharatam Dance Company was a major company funded by the government, and we had our shows at the arts centre and people didn’t just think “it’s Indian dance”. We had an audience that kept coming for every season because in a way I educated them because of my ability to communicate what the dance is all about.

The dance culture of Australia is under threat because mainstream professional companies are getting all the grants, but the general dance culture - small ballet schools, Indian dance schools are not. It also worries me that there are no regulations for Indian dance. There are Indian dance schools everywhere now with no set curriculum and that is a concern.

My emphasis has always been on a professional standard from day one. We have to make sure people understand that this is theatre - a convention of theatre.

Have 60gm nuts daily to boost Testosterone replacement sexual desire, orgasm quality therapy ups stroke risk in men

ging men with low testosterone levels who take testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) are at a greater risk of experiencing an ischemic stroke or a cardiac arrest especially during the first two years of use, warn researchers.

Published in The American Journal of Medicine, the findings confirm concerns voiced by many health agencies about the potential risks associated with the treatment.

“Our findings show that the use of TRT was associated with an increased risk of stroke, transient ischemic attack or cardiac arrest during the first two years of use,” said Christel Renoux from the McGill University in Canada.

n a good news, researchers have found that consuming 60 grams of nuts daily improves sexual functions such as boosting desire and orgasm quality.

The findings, published in the journal Nutrients, show that adding walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds to an unhealthy western diet can improve sexual desire and orgasm quality.

For the study, researchers from RoviraiVirgili University and the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV) in Spain, conducted a nutritional intervention study with healthy participants of reproductive age in order to determine if regular consumption of nuts has any effect on sexual functions.

The researchers analysed 83 individuals for 14 weeks who were following a western diet which is poor in fruits and vegetables and rich

in animal fats.

In a previous study, the same research group described how certain nuts such as walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds improved sperm quality, although then they had not established positive effects of nuts on sexual function.

According to the researchers, the prevalence of erectile and sexual dysfunction affects two per cent of men under the age of 40 years, around 52 per cent of men aged 40 to 70 years and more than 85 per cent of men aged over 80.

According to researchers, there is limited evidence on the long-term clinical benefits of TRT to effectively treat the modestly declining levels of endogenous testosterone levels of aging but healthy men.

“We strongly recommend that clinicians proceed with caution when considering prescribing TRT and first discuss both the potential benefits and risks with patients,” Renoux said.

The risk factors associated with sexual and erectile dysfunction are smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, a lack of physical exercise, stress and an unhealthy diet .

Red wine can treat depression, anxiety

I

n a good news for wine lovers, researchers have found a compound present in red wine which can treat depression and anxiety.

The plant compound resveratrol displays antistress effects by blocking the expression of an enzyme which controls stress in the brain.

“Resveratrol may be an effective alternative to drugs for treating patients suffering from depression and anxiety disorders,” said Ying Xu, Associate Professor, University at Buffalo in the US. The findings, published in the journal Neuropharmacolog, shed light onto how neurological processes are impacted by resveratrol -- a compound having numerous health benefits and found in the skin and seeds of grapes and berries.

While research has identified resveratrol to have antidepressant effects, the compound’s relationship to phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), an enzyme influenced by the stress hormone corticosterone, was unknown.

Corticosterone regulates the body’s response to stress. Too much stress, however, can lead to excessive amounts of the hormone circulating in the brain and, ultimately, to depression or other mental disorders.

The research also reveals that PDE4, induced

by excessive amounts of corticosterone, causes depression- and anxiety-like behaviour.

The enzyme lowers cyclic adenosine monophosphate -- a messenger molecule that signals physiological changes such as cell division, change, migration and death -in the body, leading to physical alterations in the brain.

Resveratrol displayed neuroprotective effects against corticosterone by inhibiting the expression of PDE4. The research lays the groundwork for the use of the compound in novel antidepressants.

According to the researchers, although red wine contains resveratrol, consumption of alcohol has various health risks, including addiction.

The study analysed a large database of electronic medical records of patients enrolled in primary care practices in the UK and formed a cohort of 15,401 men, aged 45 years or older, with low testosterone levels (hypogonadism).

Users of TRT had a 21 per cent greater risk of cardiovascular events compared with nonusers, corresponding to an additional 128 events.

Too much coffee during pregnancy bad for baby’s liver

adies, limit your tea or coffee intake if you’re expecting, as researchers have found that excess caffeine intake during pregnancy may impair baby’s liver development and increase the risk of liver disease in adulthood.

In a study on rats, it was found that pregnant rats, which were given caffeine, had offspring with lower birth weight, altered growth and stress hormone levels and impaired liver development.

Published in the Journal of Endocrinology, the study indicates that consuming 2-3 cups of coffee a day may alter stress and growth hormone levels in a manner that can impair development of baby’s liver.

“Our results indicate that prenatal caffeine causes an excess of stress hormone activity in the mother, which inhibits IGF-1 activity for liver development before birth. However, compensatory mechanisms do occur after birth to accelerate growth and restore normal liver function as IGF-1 activity increases and stress hormone signalling decreases,” said study co-author Yinxian Wen from the Wuhan University in China.

Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a hormone that plays an important role in childhood growth. “The increased risk of fatty liver disease, caused by prenatal caffeine exposure, is most likely a consequence of this enhanced, compensatory postnatal IGF1 activity,” Wen said.

For the study, the researchers investigated the effects of low (equivalent to 2-3 cups of coffee) and high doses (equivalent to 6-9 cups of coffee) of caffeine given to pregnant rats, on liver function and hormone levels of their offspring.

“Our work suggests that prenatal caffeine is not good for babies and although these findings still need to be confirmed in people, I would recommend that women avoid caffeine during pregnancy,” Wen said.

According to the research involving 4,582 Chinese adults aged over 55, evidence of faster cognitive decline was found in those who consistently ate more than 50 grams of chili per day. Memory decline was even more significant if the chili lovers were slim.

Those who ate a lot of chili had a lower income and body mass index (BMI) and were more physically active compared to non-consumers.

The study, published in the journal Nutrients, showed that those who consumed in excess of 50 grams of chili a day had almost double the risk of memory decline and poor cognition.

“Chili consumption was found to be beneficial for body weight and blood pressure in our previous studies. However, in this study, we found adverse effects on cognition among older adults,” said the lead author of the study, Zumin Shi from Qatar University.

Chili intake included both fresh and dried chili peppers but not sweet capsicum or black pepper.

“And if we are not able to build it to an adequate level, then it increases the chances of obesity and related health risk factors. Phone is one of the ways of exhibiting that we are not doing enough physical activities in our life,” he added.

One-hour exercise with proper hydration may tackle low BP

S

uffering from low blood pressure? Do an hour or more of daily exercise and stay hydrated to improve the condition and control fainting or dizziness episodes, finds a NASA-funded study on astronauts.

The study is the first to examine the condition called “orthostatic intolerance” during daily activities when the astronauts returned home.

The researchers found that exercise regimens during space flight, followed by saline injections after landing, were sufficient to prevent the condition from occurring.

“Doing an hour or more of daily exercise was sufficient to prevent loss of heart muscle, and when it was combined with receiving hydration on their return, the condition was prevented entirely. We expected to see up to two-thirds of the space crew faint. Instead, no one fainted,” said cardiologist Dr Benjamin Levine from UT Southwestern Medical Center.

A similar condition is also diagnosed in patients as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which is predominantly found in women. The dizziness that it causes is life-changing and can be debilitating.

For the study, published in the journal Circulation, the researchers used a small blood pressure cuff on astronauts’ finger to measure blood pressure and every heartbeat.

These measurements were taken during multiple 24-hour periods before, during, and after six months of spaceflight. Twelve astronauts were involved -eight men and four women.

This treatment is just one of the ways medicine, heart research, and space travel have connected throughout Dr Levine’s work. The successful moon landing in 1969 was an early influence on his career.

The early interest led Dr Levine into space research within the field of cardiology, and he began working with the space shuttle programme in 1991.

“We put a catheter in an astronaut’s heart -- it was former UT Southwestern faculty member Dr Drew Gaffney -- and sent him into space. It was probably the most expensive right-heart catheterization ever,” Dr Levine reminisced.

“Much of our early research was devoted to understanding why astronauts faint when they return from space. Now, we can prevent it from happening”.

Take hot bath 90 minutes before bedtime for super sleep

omen, take note -- A treadmill exercise regime can reduce period pain and improve long-term quality of life, says a study.

According to the study published in the journal Contemporary Clinical Trials, the researchers conducted a trial over a sevenmonth period to see how treadmill exercise benefited women suffering from primary dysmenorrhea, commonly known as menstruation pain.

Biomedical engineers at University of TexasAustin reached this conclusion after analysing thousands of studies linking water-based passive body heating, or bathing and showering with warm/hot water, with improved sleep quality.

“The only way to make an accurate determination of whether sleep can, in fact, be improved was to combine all the past data and look at it through a new lens.”

In collaboration with the UT Health Science Center at Houston and the University of Southern California, the researchers reviewed 5,322 studies.

Meta-analytical tools were used to assess the consistency between relevant studies and showed that an optimum temperature of between 104 and 109 degrees Fahrenheit (40-42 degrees Celsius) improved overall sleep quality.

When scheduled one-two hours before bedtime, it can also hasten the speed of falling asleep by an average of 10 minutes.

“Women who have painful periods often take steps to actively avoid exercise -- after all when you are in pain it is often the last thing that you want to partake in,” said Leica Claydon-Mueller, Professor at Anglia Ruskin University.

The average person’s circadian cycle is characterized by a reduction in core body temperature of about 0.5 to 1 Fahrenheit around an hour before usual sleep time -dropping to its lowest level between the middle and later span of night-time sleep.

For the study, women aged between 18-43 were asked to take part in a supervised aerobic training regime three times a week for four weeks, beginning the day after the end of their menstrual period, followed by unsupervised home exercise for six months.

It then begins to rise, acting as a kind of a biological alarm clock wake-up signal.

Their results were compared with a control group, who carried out their usual regimes.

According to the researchers, the study examined the effect of treadmill exercise on measures such as pain intensity, sleep quality and overall quality of life.

The researchers found the optimal timing of bathing for cooling down of core body temperature in order to improve sleep quality is about 90 minutes before going to bed.

The study found that the women who took part in the supervised exercise reported 6 per cent less pain after four weeks and 22 per cent less pain while continuing the exercise for an additional six months.

This trial demonstrated that exercise significantly reduced pain for those people taking part in the programme and they also reported reduced pain levels after four and seven months.

Significant benefits of exercise were reported after the seven-month reporting period for other study measures, including a higher quality of life and improved daily functioning.

“The improvements in quality of life scores after seven months were noteworthy, although it was perhaps surprising that there was no significant difference in sleep quality to that of the control group,” said Indian origin researcher Priya Kannan from Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

“If baths are taken at the right biological time -- 1-2 hours before bedtime -- they will aid the natural circadian process and increase one’s chances of not only falling asleep quickly but also of experiencing better quality sleep,” showed the findings appeared in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews.

umours have been rife lately that Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor are planning to get married. Alia’s close family members have, however, clarified that the Bollywood couple is not getting hitched anytime soon.

The buzz started after some media portals floated unconfirmed reports that Alia has placed an order for a wedding lehenga with ace fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. This, because the “Raazi” star was spotted outside the designer’s store in Mumbai.

On Friday, Alia’s producer uncle Mukesh Bhatt squashed all such rumours.

Production of Netflix’s “Ghost Stories” will begin in August. The stories, directed by the filmmakers, will be thematically connected to each other and culminate in the end.

For Karan, directing a horror film is not only challenging, but also an exciting opportunity.

“I have always been mortified to watch the horror genre and have always stayed very far away from any ghost story! So,to direct one is not only hugely challenging but also exceptionally exciting,” Karan said.

“As a writer/director, I thrive on bending genres and inverting tropes and I am so looking forward to attempting that with a ghost story,” Zoya said.

Dibakar feels horror as a genre has incredible room to experiment and explore. “’Ghost Stories’ is my attempt to do that, and it’s great to have a partner in Netflix with whom I have the freedom to tell the story as envisioned. Ultimately we are entertainers, and there’s nothing like a spine-chilling story, scaring the devil out of us while we’re safely tucked in our sofa munching fries,” he added.

Kashyap, who has collaborated with Netflix on multiple occasions, said: “I am really looking forward to challenging myself to make something that I have never attempted before. Also I have never prepared so much for anything before.”

Srishti Behl Arya, Director International Originals at Netflix - India, feels there is an appetite for horror in India.

“We did ‘Lust Stories’, which did super well on the service...So, when these guys came to us and said what if we come up with another anthology and this time we tell scary stories’, we got very excited,” Arya said.

“It feels great. I am ready to take that plunge again and looking forward to being back on the big screen. It’s a refreshingly unique project and am looking forward to working with Sabbir. I loved my role, and it’s something I’ve never done before ... I can’t wait for my audiences to see me in a new avatar,” Shilpa said.

“Ghost Stories” is the third collaboration between Netflix and RSVP. Produced

“Nikamma” will also star Abhimanyu Dassani and social media star Shirley Setia.

he much-feted “Masaan” won Richa Chadha wide acclaim but the actress says she does not identify with her character in the film because she is essentially a rebel.

In Neeraj Ghaywan’s Masaan”, which completed four years of release, Richa plays Devi, who struggles to shake off the small town stigma towards pre-marital sex. Vicky Kaushal and Shweta Tripathi played the film’s other protagonists, Deepak and Shalu, who attempt to transcend the restrictions of their casteist society.

“I don’t identify with my character in ‘Masaan’ because I am somewhat a rebel. I have found my way. I have, despite all the challenges in life, fought and created a space for myself. In her own way Devi also fights, but I feel she stumbles a lot more than I ever would.

That is where she gets stuck in life,” Richa said.

The 32-year-old actress feels had the film released today, it would have received better distribution and promotional facilities.

“The true test of a film is when it becomes memorable. That’s why we like old songs. Sometimes you don’t get box-office recognition, but nobody was expecting (box-office success) for this film. For me, the best thing is that people continue to appreciate the film,” she added.

rom hosting a youth show on television to venturing into new business to mothering three children to working in Bollywood films, Sunny Leone has been super busy over the past seven months. Each of her projects and relationships is special, she says, and so, driven by passion, she is ready for all the sleepless nights.

In 2017, Sunny, along with husband Daniel Weber adopted a baby girl. They named her Nisha. She has started going to playschool now, and the couple has started a new branch of their playschool chain, D’ Art Fusion, in Juhu for their daughter and other kids.

Education, she reckons, is a different world - far removed from the business of entertainment.

“Education helps people know the basics of life, but I know a lot of people who don’t have a degree or never finished school and yet are very successful. I am one of them,” she said.

“I strove for what I wanted as a businessperson. I was passionate about the stuff I wanted to do, and I worked hard, and that’s why I am where I am right now,” added the ‘Baby Doll’ famed actress.

Sunny’s latest item dance is in the upcoming film “Arjun Patiala”.

She has also been co-hosting the show “MTV Splitsvilla” with Rannivijay Singh over the past five seasons.

“What I’ve noticed after hosting ‘Splitsvilla’ for so long is that most young people have the same concerns. Only the periphery changes -- like how we meet people, or how things are done now. Digital dating and dating apps, for instance, have changed how young people meet,” she said.

“The primary concerns, though, remain the same. It is always about falling in love or getting to know each other,” added Sunny.

It has been over seven years that Sunny, the Canadian-born Indian-American former adult movie star, arrived in India and made Mumbai her home. With several films, superhit dances, cosmetic and perfume brands, a skincare line, and a strong presence in the social media, Sunny has bolstered a huge following in India.

The actress said she has no plan to leave her newfound homeland, where she has not only received applause for her screen efforts, but has also seen growing business opportunities.

She is proud of her daughter. “My daughter goes to an amazing school that offers her so many different things, and I’m happy about that. I believe in every country there are different levels of education for children, and it depends on whether they are able to get it or not,” said the 38-year-old actress, who is also the mother of twin boys, Asher and Noah.

“I think India is one of the most fast-paced countries in the world right now when it comes to doing business. If you have a dream and you want to do something, then you can achieve it. I see myself as an example of that, as I have been able to achieve whatever I wanted to so far. I’d have sleepless nights doing so many things I’m passionate about, but I am happy with the way everything has shaped up for me in India,” she says.

hef Gary Mehigan may not be on the judge’s panel of the new season of “MasterChef Australia”, but he recalled his long association with the show as an experience that changed his life.

e’ve all been there... you’re out to eat and in need of a refill or the check and the wait staff is nowhere to be found.

Now, a recent study shows that adding a tabletop device can improve restaurant services and increase revenues.

The research reveals tabletop technology is likely to improve sales by 1 per cent per check and reduce meal duration by 10 per cent.

The combination of these two effects increase the sales per minute or sales productivity by 11 per cent.

The findings reveal that restaurants should introduce tabletop technology in a demonstrated way to improve service and satisfaction.

The data was collected from a restaurant chain here in the US that owns 66 establishments. It looked at transaction data from 2012 to 2014 or 2.6 million transactions.

Tabletop technology allows customers to view menu items, re-order beverages, pay for the meal, play games and browse news content. The technology is meant to assist waiters, not replace them.

“We estimate one per cent sales lift per check which translates into $2 million extra sales or $1 million profit per month in the short-run, and that’s a conservative estimate,” said Tom Fangyun Tan, Associate Professor at Southern Methodist University in the US.

“A good, attentive waiter already does what the tabletop device does...a less attentive or forgetful waiter does not, but relies more on the device, which makes up for the lacking ability resulting in faster service,” Tan said.

The data suggest that restaurants re-evaluate their operations to fully reap the benefits of tabletop technology.

‘infinity dining’ for Gold users

ome-grown restaurant search and delivery platform Zomato introduced the “Infinity Dining” plan for its “Gold” subscribers that allows them to have unlimited buffet at partner restaurants.

The plan has been introduced in partnership with 350 restaurants - with at least a 3.5 rating -- in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

While dining infinitely at bars, they get access to an open bar at a fixed price, Zomato said.

“Dining out constitutes about 70 per cent of a restaurant’s total business,” Gaurav Gupta, Chief Operating Officer & Co-founder, Zomato, said.

“While Zomato Gold continues to be instrumental in driving sales for restaurants and adding value to subscribers, we realise that the opportunities in this sphere are endless welcome, Infinity Dining. It is a global first, as India becomes the first country to offer such a choice, at scale,” Gupta added.

Zomato said its Gold subscription programme has grown almost 100 per cent in the past eight months and now has over 1.25 million subscribers across nine countries- India, UAE, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, Lebanon, Turkey, Philippines and Indonesia.

It marks his foray into the south eastern suburbs from the western suburbs which was his domain. “The idea behind this was simple,” he says in his unique modest style. “As our community is growing, we wanted to cater to areas where there is a thick populace of Indians. In fact, we were mulling on the idea for the past three-four years but for some reason we were not able to find the right spot. The moment I found one, I decided it was time to give Clayton a taste of Indian cuisines.”

For the western suburbs in Melbourne, Aangan has been a name to reckon with in Indian food. Aangan at Footscray was opened more than 15 years ago. Sumit, a chef with over 25 years in the hospitality industry, knew what to offer. But he was the reluctant celebrity chef who preferred to remain behind the scenes serving up delicious Indian food that was a hit not just among Indian patrons but among the general Australian public too.

Indian cuisine is no more Indian, it is adapting to other cultures from all over the world and it will definitely grow with time.” And it is this fusion that he is working on.

True to form, Sumit says his only fuel is passion for food and the energy he gets working in the kitchen. He has seen the rewards through the love and support of people and patrons over the years.

Sumit moves with restraint for what lies ahead. He wants to be stable and make sure his foundation is strong. He also does not want the “successful” tag because he believes success is an ongoing journey, not the destination. It is somewhat ironic that a man who shies away from being called successful has today emerged as an ambassador for Indian food given that Aangan is a name most people in Melbourne have heard of. Millets, the new Women bartenders: flavour among Indians The changing game and

One of the challenges of living abroad is keeping track of the trends back home. Of late, millets are gaining mileage among Indians and many families are moving from rice/wheat consumption to include millet-based dishes in their daily menu.

So why are people back home embracing the millet mantra?

Claiming back: Historically, the consumption of millets in the Indian subcontinent dates back to more than 4500 years ago and it is mentioned in some of the oldest Hindu texts. Even as early as fifty years back, millets were more popular than rice and wheat. While the Green Revolution helped India become self-sufficient in food production, the easy availability of wheat and rice unfortunately led to millets moving away from our dining tables and diet millets were looked down upon as coarse grains eaten in villages. They were swapped for refined diet of polished rice and wheat flour. But with awareness created by NGOs and agricultural institutions, many people are now rediscovering the benefits of these humble grains and reclaiming its lost glory.

The farmer-friendly grain: Millets like cereals (rice, wheat) belong to the grain family, but are small seeded. There are eight popular millets. Here is a list with Hindi/Tamil names which you can use as a ready reckoner. Sorghum (Jowar/Cholam), finger millet/Ragi (Madua/Kezhvaragu), Pearl millet (Bajra/ Cambu), Fox tail (Kangni/Thinai), Little millet (Kutki, Samai), Proso (Barri/ Pannivaragu), Barnyard (Jhangora/Kuthiravali) and Kodo (Kodra/Vargu) Wheat and rice need fertile soil and adequate rainfall, so in some sense are pampered crops, while millets can be grown in poor soil with very little rain.

Hence, they are a favoured crop in many parts of Asia and Africa. In fact, our country is the world’s largest producer of millets!

The Better Choice: Millets are gluten free, a blessing for people who have allergy to wheat gluten or have a sensitive digestive system. With many types of millets, products made with wheat can be easily replaced with them.

Whole millets are packed with more nutrients and fibre content compared to polished rice/refined flour, so definitely a healthier choice! Some millets are cooling and some warming -- so we can choose millets and the way they are prepared according to seasonal changes to help our body. Modern science is rediscovering the health promoting properties of millets in managing diabetes, reducing cholesterol levels and hence government institutes are taking active interest in promoting millet consumption.

Variety, the spice of life: Finally, millets can provide the much needed variety for your family as there are so many millets to choose from and you can use these versatile grains to make roti, rice, kichidi, pongal, idly, dosa, and even sweet dishes and drinks!

Food and Genes: Yes, when you live abroad you may have to choose some local foods, but do not let go of your traditional food habits. Gary Nabhan, a renowned ethnobotanist tells us that one man‘s diet can prove to be disastrous for another. He also mentions that the mismatch between diet and genes is leading to many serious health conditions, including a dramatic rise in auto immune and inflammatory diseases. Wherever one lives their genes won’t change, so it will be good to include what our ancestors ate, in our diets!

How can you get started?

You must be thinking shifting to millets is easier back home where it is readily available. But in this day and age, nothing is impossible. The world is like a global village and millets should definitely be available in your local Indian store. Millets are not difficult to cook at all, what is required though is a change in mind-set. It may seem daunting at first but once you start doing it you will realise it is not very different from cooking rice and can easily be adapted to make every day dishes. Most brands come with detailed cooking instructions/recipes and the net is abuzz with recipes which range for idly to muffins, thus satiating both savoury and sweet cravings!

It’s high time we bring these humble grains back into our households and to lead a healthier and better life!

rati Mestry, 29, was one proud woman competing against 19 men in the finals of a bartending championship -- an example of how women are slowly, but steadily making their way into the male-dominated space in India.

Mestry, who competed at the Ultimate Bartender Championship, says the industry has evolved over the years, opening the doors for women in the profession.

“My experience as a bartender has been very progressive. I love playing with cocktails and love to serve it in different ways to my guests. I never felt that this is the so called ‘men’s game’. I work at a place where I get equal opportunities as male bartenders,” Mestry said Skills help.

“I feel nobody can discriminate you if you have skills. In today’s time, skills matter the most. If you are good at your job, people will definitely appreciate you, irrespective of your gender,” said Mestry, who works at a bar in Bengaluru, and has been a part of the industry since the last six years.

Ami Behram Shroff and Shatbhi Basu are two names which come up almost every time women bartenders are spoken of in the industry in India.

Pankaj Balachandran, India Brand Ambassador for Monkey Shoulder, says there was a taboo that women can’t work in bars, but it has completely changed now.

“An increasing number of women are getting into the hospitality industry. There are bars which have really good ladies’ bartenders. Four years ago, women in the bartending profession were only a handful, but now the number has increased,” Balachandran said.

However, there are factors that hamper their visibility in the industry. Safety is one prime reason.

According to Arijit Bose, who has been in the food and beverage industry for more than 10 years, hiring a woman as a bartender involves a lot of responsibility, and due to lack of facilities, standalone bars

still resist working with females.

He recounted how the Jessica Lal murder case in 1999 in Delhi had sparked a debate regarding the safety of women bartenders in India.

“Safety matters a lot, especially for women. Bartending is a long hour shift job. It looks easy from the surface level, but there are a lot of complications.

“Employers hesitate to hire women because it becomes their duty to ensure proper safety for them. But no one can guarantee anyone’s safety, right? And one mistake can shut down your whole bar. So that’s why people still prefer to work with male bartenders.”

Alisha, a Mumbai-based bartender who also competed at the Ultimate Bartender Championship, but couldn’t make it to the top 20, said safety has never been a problem for her.

“I know there are places which do not hire women bartenders but people who do hire them, ensure proper safety. At my workplace, there is a separate locker and toilet facility for women. Proper cab facility is also provided to female employees.

Women’s safety is a top priority at my workplace,” she said.

Alisha said she was also lucky to get her family’s support in her decision of following her passion for bartending -- unlike most people whose parents consider the profession “non-serious”.

“There are many perceptions regarding our profession. People generally think we just know how to serve alcohol. But there is a lot more beyond it. From interacting with customers to maintaining proper cleanliness to making new types of drinks, a bartender has to do multiple tasks. It’s not easy to be a bartender. Our profession looks quite glamorous, but it is also a serious job.

“Things have changed, but there should be more changes. I hope in the coming years;I see more girls coming in.

Mast Mast Machi

Trevally cooked in a mild and flavoursome mustard sauce Ingredients:

Spice:

1 med size Trevally fish in cutlets

1 tbsp mustard seeds 3 tbsp oil or mustard oil 1 inch ginger chopped 5 cloves garlic chopped 2-3 green chillies chopped 2 tbsp vinegar 1 tbsp panch phoran (spice blend) 1 onion finely chopped 3/4 tsp turmeric

1 cup coconut milk Salt to taste

Marinate: 1/2 tsp red chilli powder 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1/2 tsp salt

Method: 1. Marinate the trevally cutlets with salt, red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Mix well and refrigerate until ready to use.

2. Heat 1 tbsp oil or mustard oil in a non stick pan.

3. Stir in the mustard seeds, when it crackles add the chopped ginger, garlic, green chillies and fry lightly.

4. Add vinegar and remove from the heat. Allow to cool a little.

Transfer this mixture into a mixer jar and grind to a fine paste.

5. Heat the remaining mustard oil in another non stick pan.

6. Add the panch phoran and chopped onions to the oil and fry until translucent.

7. Stir in the ground paste and mix. Pour in about ½ cup of water, salt and turmeric powder and mix well.

8. Pour in the coconut milk and stir well to mix. Bring to boil and allow to simmer for a few mins until gravy thickens slightly.

9. Meanwhile fry the travelly cutlets until golden in colour.

Drain on paper.

10. Serve on a platter along with the hot gravy and garnish with coriander.

Serves 2-4

Variation: In step 9 gently add the fish pieces and stir slowly to mix. Cover the pan and cook until the fish is tender.
