Message from the Chair of GBRIA Tom Yura COO, Cornerstone Chemical Chair ,Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance, Inc. This year marks our 25th Annual Safety Excellence Awards. In 1996, a vision was set with the establishment of this awards program. GBRIA members and our partners in the industrial community banded together with a commitment to have a safer workplace. Through hard work and dedication, we have proven that that an injury free workplace is possible!

GBRIA is dedicated to adding value to our industrial community by focusing our efforts on safety performance and workforce development.

This work is performed by our various committees and are organized around 6 key tenets: 1)

Achieve an injury and incident free workplace,

2)

Ensure access to a competitive and skilled company and contractor workforce;

3)

Build support in the local community for retention and growth of our industries;

4)

Facilitate operational excellence through networking and exchanges;

5)

Maintain a vibrant, successful and involved membership, and

6)

Provide stewardship to budget and maintain the highest levels of financial integrity.

Our program today, is all about our first tenet- Achieve an Injury and Incident Free Workplace. The Safety Excellence Awards program supports our goal by recognizing the safety performance of our partners by conveying GBRIA’s strong support of contractor safety performance and acknowledge that our contractors are an important part of our own workforce. We want to make GBRIA member workplaces injury free, and

we are counting on YOU to help us achieve this.

Message from the Chair of GBRIA Continued There may be no other time in recent history where such an endeavor has been so challenging. As COVID-19 spread across the globe, our industry, being critical to the infrastructure of the country and our community, had no choice but to yet again, band together and find truly new and unique ways in accomplishing our goals. If nothing else, our response to the challenges presented by the pandemic have shown our resiliency, creativity, and passion for safety.

As we continue to move towards resuming life as we knew it before the pandemic, let us not forget how we solved these complex problems, how we came together – while having to be physically distanced, and

how we overcame to keep our industry, the heartbeat of Louisiana, moving and supplying the needs of Louisianans, Americans, and beyond.

Our events today are about opportunity and celebration; a chance to recognize those who went above and beyond in 2020 with friends and colleagues. As we celebrate our successes, I leave you with a challenge.

I ask each of you to rededicate yourself and your endeavors to providing workplaces that are the shining example to every industry; workplaces that lead the country and beyond in our commitment to keep our greatest assets, our employees, going home not just in the same way they showed up, but better, happier, and fulfilled.

I am very pleased to see every one of you here today, and I hope you share in my excitement over this celebration of safety achievement.

Message from GBRIA’s Associate Director Safety, Health, and Security Brandon Smith, CSP Associate Director Safety, Health, and Security Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance, Inc. In November of last year, I found myself transfixed to the television in a way I had not before. I was not watching the latest Netflix series or the news but found myself on the edge of my seat watching four NASA astronauts launch from the Kennedy Space Center using the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launching the Crew Dragon Spacecraft. I know I am not alone thinking 2020 was a heavy year.

Watching that launch, however, offered a glimmer of hope amid a constant rush of negative news. I am too young to have seen Apollo 11 and with so much time passed, too far removed to ever be truly moved by such a feat. This launch was an opportunity for new generations to see how far we can go when we strive to achieve audacious goals By now you are likely wondering what this has to do with our industry or this awards program. Aside from the aesthetics of space travel and the cosmos throughout this publication, I think a strong correlation exists between our industry and NASA’s work to put humans in space. Both efforts rely on engineers to design and test processes, products, and moving from theory to reality.

Both rely on highly skilled in the crafts, to bring these designs to life. Both rely on management to ensure efficient and effective work. Both rely on an intense respect for safety – knowing their work impacts not just themselves, but all who work in or live around their operations.

While many look out into the cosmos and see it as the next frontier, we need only to look into one of our facilities to get a glimpse of next generation technology and determination to change the world in new and exciting ways. This shines through in the deployment of drones to provide heightened security details, rovers dispatched into vessels for inspections rather than people, or slipping on a virtual reality headset to walk through 3D environment to plan for lock-out points along a set of piping. As our President & CEO, Connie Fabre, often says, this is not technology of tomorrow – it is technology of today.

While we can look back at 2020 and contemplate the year that could have been, it is crucial for us to recognize the ways we overcame challenges. My hope is we do not settle into the ways of how things were but embrace the change required of us. The manner of work may have changed, but not the need to move forward, to be creative, and never let up on our mission to multiply the millions of hours of safe work and when some system, process, or equipment deviates from that plan, we can rest safely in knowing that the same kind of resiliency that was required of us, is built into everything we do and allows us to fail safely. Our award nominees and members are on the cutting edge of technology and safety. I look forward to continuing to showcase these advancements in publications such as this, within the organization, and to the rest of the industrial world.

-Awards OverviewAs owners and operators of industrial facilities, the State issues our license to operate, while our right to operate is granted by the communities surrounding our facilities. The safety of those who work within our gates and those who live outside our gates are always on our minds. By safely operating our facilities we earn the trust of our neighbors, and a critical element to our facilities safety, is our partnership with our contractors. This was never more present than in 2020, when, working as essential employees, we were all tasked with producing the goods to help sustain everyday life – many of which helped fight COVID19, but also tasked with doing so in ways previously unimaginable.

Each year, our committee is impressed by the nomination submissions by our contractor partners. In many ways, the continuous improvement of safety programs in our industry have made the selection process evermore difficult – not a bad problem to have. Consider, for a moment, the multitude of contractors who work in GBRIA members facilities each year and every year, and yet only 42 are represented in this awards program today. So, to be nominated for a GBRIA Safety Excellence Award proves that your company is one of an elite group. The recognition you receive in our program and through this program highlights your company as one of the best-of-the-best.

Now, the Contractor Safety Excellence Awards are being presented to qualified recipients in the following categories: A.

Specialty Construction

General Maintenance & Construction

C.

Specialty Trades – Hard Crafts

D.

Specialty Trades – Soft Crafts

E.

Technical Support Contractors.

In each category, awards will be presented based on the company size according to the actual hours worked company wide. Nominees were grouped based on size and divided into three divisions per category. In some instances, the committee awarded ties for 1st place. In these instances, the committee did not choose a second-place award winner, but instead placed companies at third place, if appropriate.

In addition to our safety excellence awards, we will also award two companies who submitted detailed write-ups on their efforts to give back to the community and who have sought our new and innovative ways to keep workers safe.

-Awards OverviewThe main criteria used for the Safety Excellence Award evaluation includes: •

Nomination submission by a GBRIA member-site

• A written summary of the unique or special qualities of a contractor’s safety management system, •

A current GBRIA Contractor Safety and Health Systems audit,

•

A review of safety performance data, companywide.

• A comparison of the nominee’s Total Recordable Incident Rate against its industry average TRIR as calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The GBRIA Safety, Health and Security Committee reviewed and evaluated each company relative to the criteria and selected the winners based on a consensus decision. The contractors represented in tonight’s award program represent over 100,000 employees who logged more than 250 million hours worked in 2020. While the committee looked at much more than each companies Total Recordable Incident Rate, it is notable to mention that the cumulative TRIR for the nominated companies is a 0.21.

Community Service Award

Community Service Nominees Each year GBRIA’s Safety, Health, and Security Committee reviews and selects winners of the Community Service Awards. Year after year the committee is astonished at the good work being performed throughout the Greater Baton Rouge Region and beyond. The industrial community truly lives up to its name.

This award is about spreading good will throughout the area and creating lasting impact for our neighbors and future generations to come. The nominees for this year’s Community Service Award are…

Community Service Award Winner Brock employees found a way to assemble face masks alongside their thermal blanket production at our manufacturing facility in Sulphur, LA. Brock began making face masks at one of its thermal blanket manufacturing facilities to donate to those in need.

Medical facilities asked local communities to make protective gear for staff and patients due to the increased demand.

Brock employees found a way to assemble face masks alongside their thermal blanket production at the Sulphur, Louisiana, manufacturing facility.

“Ensuring those on the front lines of the pandemic remain healthy is essential to our ability to help flatten the curve,” said Lee Gros, President, US North, Brock Services. “We have a skilled group of fabricators who wanted to use their talents to help others and we are extremely proud of them and truly inspired by their actions.”

Once the supplies arrived, the masks were added into production and within a week, Brock had enough to donate to the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge. Brock has produced and donated hundreds of masks to local hospitals and medical facilities during the pandemic.

Each year GBRIA’s Safety, Health, and Security Committee reviews and selects winners of an award dedicated to new and exciting safety practices. Realizing that innovation isn’t often an overnight process, the committee rotates the focal point of the innovation award each year.

In both beta and field testing, it has provided substantial reduction to the heat index’s of up to a 40 degree drop in the heat index. By reducing the heat index, we can hopefully reduce the chances of our technicians having a heat emergency and provide them with a safer working environment.

2020 Hal G. Ginn Award

Hal G. Ginn Award Overview The Hal G. Ginn award is named after Col. Hal Gatewood Ginn. This year is especially poignant has Col. Ginn passed away last year on Veteran’s Day. Hal served on the GBRIA board for many years and was our Chair for 5 years. This safety awards program is the result of his vision, and it is

because of his foresight, leadership, and sincere dedication to safety that our most prestigious award is named after him.

In addition to his contributions in creating this awards program, he also directed the development of the first contractor employee safety training program and helped form the Association of Reciprocal Safety Councils or ARSC, to make contractor safety training along the Gulf Coast reciprocal between owners’ sites. Hal was also a leader in the development of our safety and health audit program, which today serves our members needs and others across the Gulf Coast in partnership with Houston Business Roundtable. We will continue to recognize his vision for years to come.

The Hal G. Ginn Award is awarded to the contractor who has demonstrated the highest overall safety performance in the last year. Nominees for this award are the winners of each category. The top overall performing

company was difficult to choose this year as every nominee is deserving, but there was one company whose performance, award write-up, and its contents, its company audit, and innovation and success in 2020 stood out among all the others and therefore they have been selected as our top achiever at this year’s event.
