Following GBRIA’s 2023 Safety Excellence Awards, our Safety, Health, and Security Committee decided to make significant changes to our awards program.
The aim of the change was to focus our attention less on lagging statistics and more on the execution of safety programs and initiatives. This review process included benchmarking other industry safety recognition programs, such as ABC’s Step Program, AFPM’s Safety Awards, and IBR’s Safety Excellence Awards Programs.
As a result, the committee created a new model that focuses on narrative responses to a series of questions, requiring supporting documentation for key questions along the way. To make our decision-making process more transparent, we listed our 0-4 grading scale on the application. Independent judging was also added to the application process to allow judges more time to evaluate the information they were presented. After thorough review, judges submitted their scores via an online platform, where the respective application scores were averaged among the three independent judges, and initial placements were made. As a committee, the act of consensus decision-making is of the utmost importance, and thus, judges convened to review placements, set minimum cut scores to receive an award, and agree on final award recipients, relying on the scoring process and judge feedback to make our final decisions.
The reconfiguration of the application process of the Safety Excellence program, will allow the program to grow from a quantitative to a more qualitative contractor assessment, to assure that each company is continually implementing and refining new safety procedures to further propel our industry forward.
The following dashboards represent the average judge scores for each question in the nominees’ application form.

0 Points: Program or practice does not meet minimum requirements, or no response is given.
1 Point: Program or practice only meets minimum requirements or not enough detail is provided.
2 Points: Program or practice is commonly or widely adopted for industry.
3 Points: Program or practice good to above average for industry.
4 Points: Program or practice is considered exemplary/far exceeds industry.
