Happy New Year! Well I for one am heading into 2013 with lots of positive thoughts about developing my business to make it more useful to the Community and the Businesses who by their very support help pay the bills at Local View Towers. I think it is time to shake off the negativity about the recession and just kind of go for it again ... as if the recession does not exist. In my case, I think positive thinking (and taking action) is the best way to create a culture that makes running a small business creative and fun and I am hoping that all small businesses locally will join me!

MY

Although, not scientifically put together, my review of 2012 is that most businesses large and small have taken a bit of a battering and it is largely down to them to respond and come up with creative ways of engaging their customers this year. I know I will be, so watch this space folks!

Expansion on the plate for Caerphilly Gym

A Caerphilly fitness and lifestyle company is expanding with the opening of a new studio, just meters from its current base, just two years after opening.

Each 20 minute session is led by a qualified instructor. Chrissie continued, “Power Plate training is becoming more and more popular, and it’s easy to see why. Juggling work, family and social life with trying to lose weight and get fit is becoming increasingly difficult.

Bucking the current economic trend, ActiveVibe Power Plate Studio in the Western Industrial Estate is creating a new fitness suite and diet and lifestyle centre to cope with increasing demand. The current five Power Plates will also increase to nine, meaning more people can get the benefit of the vibrating plates.

In just 20 minutes at ActiveVibe you can have a full body work out and still find time to cook dinner, see your friends or get to work on time.”

Owner Chrissie Rees said, “After an exciting first couple of years we are delighted to be expanding already. We’re increasing our offer to include diet and lifestyle advice, so we can offer a complete package for people interested in losing weight and staying fit and healthy.”

The new studio will open in January, with local celebrities taking part in various fitness challenges on the Power Plates to raise money for charity.

Recipe

Chocolate Pecan Pie Serves 8

Ready in 1½ hours plus chilling

If you have a bowlful of nuts left over from Christmas then why not make this classic American favourite with a British twist – simply replace half the pecan nuts with walnuts, hazelnuts and Brazil nuts. Serve with a dollop of thick Greek yoghurt or whipped cream.

For the pastry: • 225g plain flour • 100g butter, diced • 1 medium egg, beaten with 2 tbsp cold water

For the filling: • 100g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 50g butter, diced • 75g golden syrup • 4 tbsp maple syrup • 75g caster sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 175g pecan nuts (or a mixture of pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts and Brazil nuts)

To make the pastry, sift the flour into a bowl and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the egg and water and mix to a crumbly dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until smooth. Wrap and chill the pastry for 20 minutes. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 25cm round deep metal pie tin (or a loose-based fluted flan tin). Crimp the pastry edge with your fingers and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6 and place a baking sheet in the oven to heat. To make the filling, melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat and stir in the golden syrup, maple syrup and sugar then whisk in the beaten eggs. Chop half the nuts and stir into the mixture. Gently pour the mixture into the pastry case and sprinkle over the rest of the nuts (roughly chopping the hazelnuts and Brazil nuts, if using). Slide the pie tin onto the preheated baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/350F/ Gas 4 and bake for a further 25-30 minutes until the filling has set and the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold.

The Better Life Confessions of an Eco-Worrier

by Derek Thompson

As soon as we adopted our new way of life – in the countryside and living off the land – it became apparent that being ‘green’ came with the territory. We’re novices really though, but I think I’m doing my bit… In these times of global warming, arctic winters, unpredictable weather and failing crops, many people are asking: “What has the environment ever done for me?” Well, it’s put up with us human beings, for one thing. And it spends more time in the garden than I do. But I do worry that some of my efforts may backfire. The more I look into it, the less being green seems to be black and white. I think I have the basics covered. I recycle, I compost; I even Freegle and Freecycle. My paper, cardboard, tins and glass (but not the broken glass, apparently) can all be put out for local council collection. But they won’t take plastics. So, to make the journey economically viable, I drive everything over to my nearest recycling bank – in the outof-town supermarket car park. Which makes sense, when you think about it, as supermarkets have recycled many of our local shops. I also

take unwanted clothing there for the charity containers. Then I hide and watch other people filch the items out again, which I suppose is double recycling. I try to do my bit in other ways too. I use the most energy efficient light bulbs, although the only way I can afford to kit out the whole house, and have spares, is by using cheap UK internal flights rather than expensive trains. Okay, so I have to drive to the airport as well, but the café there sells organic coffee so I’m really supporting the planet in two ways at once. I opt for organic food wherever possible and I go for minimal packaging. Like the flatpacked mange-tout flown in from Kenya and the still-tobe-ripened apples from New Zealand. Of course, I’d eat more British organic apples if they grew when I actually wanted to eat them. So much for global warming extending our summers. I run a two-seater sports car, to discourage other people

from travelling by road – in my car. And I always put my foot down to minimise the time spent pumping out exhaust gases. Obviously, I’m tempted to put a wind turbine on my roof, but apparently it’s a 25-year payback and it earns me less putting electricity back into the national grid than I pay per unit to use it, which is a bit of a swizz. I’d buy an inverter to use my own electricity off the vine, but I’m not sure the throughput from the turbine could power my dishwasher and Jacuzzi. All in all though, I feel like I’m doing my bit. So, as I raise a glass of organic Australian Merlot, I feel confident that my lifestyle choices will inspire others. Oh yes, nearly forgot – I know the Scouts appreciate my stamp donations, saved from the hate mail that keeps coming my way. Derek Thompson is a writer and humorist based in the West Country. His writing blog can be found at www.alongthewritelines.blogspot. com and he is also a regular at www. strictlywriting.blogspot.com

Finance So again we find ourselves starting the New Year on the financial back foot, following overindulgence at Christmas. While this dilemma may seem inescapable, it is certainly not without remedy. Here’s how to begin your New Year with a proactive monetary success story rather than spending Q1 worried about cash flow. This is your five-step guide to recovering from a Christmas financial hangover. 1. Personal Preparation Start by deciding whether you’re going to use a paper notepad or software. Some people prefer pen and paper, but software for personal finance management or even just a spreadsheet will give you an efficient way to keep track of your funds using an intuitive interface. Next, you need to bolster your conviction to rectify the situation. If you’ve had good intentions in the past to tackle your finances but found yourself falling by the wayside, you’ll understand the importance of this step. A process touted by many worldrenowned business coaches is to take a notepad and create two columns. On one side, put the positive things which will come from organising your money, and on the other list the downsides of what will happen and how failure will feel. This process can transform your intentions from whimsical fancy into serious conviction. 2. Assessing Your Situation Before addressing the

problem at hand, you need to understand what the damage is. This means coming to terms with exactly how much you spent and involves delving into the nitty-gritty of your naughtiness, a psychologically repelling task that is tempting to avoid. If you haven’t had your credit card statement in yet, sit down with a notepad or a spreadsheet and tally up what you spent on Christmas presents. After this, do a rough calculation of what was spent on other factors such as food, drink and travel. You can always phone your card company and ask for the current balance if you’ve lost track. 3. Laying Down Your Targets Next, make a comprehensive list of every single essential outgoing for the month including an allowance for food. Once you know what this figure is, subtract it from your income and you will know exactly how much is left to divide between your card bill/ overdraft and other spending for the coming months. 4. Breaking Your Targets Down Breaking targets down into milestones is another strategy adopted by many renowned business coaches. Once you

have your monthly budget, you can then break down your weekly, or even daily spending allowance. If you stick to these targets, you cannot fail and by the end of your plan, you will inevitably be free from your Christmas financial woes. Be as detailed as possible in your planning, accounting for any and all expenditures. 5. Other Steps to Take It’s common when struggling to get on top of finances to avoid contacting organisations to whom money is owed, such as credit card or utility bill companies. Ironically, communication can gain a great deal of leeway here. If necessary, phone up and inform them you’re unable to pay the bill this month but you can pay extra at the end of February. Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

Get fit in your outdoor Gym! Some of my friends have spent a lot of money joining gyms over the last few years, in some kind of vain effort to get themselves looking as fit as me, I suspect. Now after the little ‘excesses’ of the festive season, I am all for some healthy exercise to get the heart beating and the fat melting, but why would you pay for to exercise? You probably have a fantastic open air gym just outside your back door – it is called your garden! You can breathe fresh air, stretch muscles you didn’t know you had, build up your heart rate AND achieve something! I love digging over our veg garden at this time of year – burying the remains of last years’ mistakes and failures under-ground as I turn the soil over, like a human plough.

R.M.H SERVICES T:02920 888 645 M:07971 287922

So, that basically is the plan when we winter dig- to turn the soil over, so the rubbish on the surface, ends up at the bottom of the hole where it will rot down and feed the soil. If you can organise your spadework into nice consistent rows, of equal sized ‘clodges’ of fresh soil, you can look back on your exercise with a real sense of satisfaction … maybe pride? With what you have achieved – and then go to enjoy your reward – and lovely hot bath. Now after your bath, another very important job for your garden in January is to give it a ‘really good looking at’ – this one of most favourite gardening jobs, to the untrained eye it could be seen as daydreaming (and what is wrong with daydreaming anyway?), but it is more than that it is about enjoying your little bit of green space, and planning what you could do out there this coming year … and that is where the fun really starts. Health Feature

Dealing With Stress Sometimes everyday life can just be a little bit too much. How can you best cope with stress? Stress is the term used to describe our physical, mental and emotional reactions to what is happening in our lives. It is a perfectly natural reaction and was a vital response for our forebearers when faced with a fight or flight situation.

Types of stress

Stress - when handled in the right way - can be good for us: it enables us to take on challenges, face fears and step outside our comfort zone. We also actively seek out that adrenaline rush when doing extreme sports, playing video games or watching horror movies. But too much stress on a daily basis may lead to you finding it hard to cope - like half a million people in the UK every year who report experiencing work-related stress. This is when stress becomes a part of your life and you find yourself having to deal with physical, mental or emotional pressures every day with no respite.

Signs of stress

When you are stressed your muscles contract and prepare for action. Your heart rate speeds up and your blood pressure rises. Your body will react in one or more different ways,

such as: breathlessness, feeling sick, headaches, constant tiredness, sweating, constipation or diarrhoea, muscle spasm, heartburn, lack of appetite and sexual difficulties. As a result, you may find it difficult to concentrate or to make decisions. You may start to avoid difficult situations or avoid talking to people about what’s going on and may find yourself crying frequently and feeling depressed. If not dealt with, stress can contribute to serious health problems such as ulcers, heart attacks and strokes.

Learning to relax

You may not always be able to remove the elements of your life which are causing you stress, but there are things you can do to help you deal with it. Giving yourself some quiet time to relax can really help. Use the time to read or listen to music or try a relaxation technique for 20 minutes: close your eyes, breathing slowly and deeply. Think about which muscles are tense and try to relax them, imagining the tension just easing away. Focus on each part of your body in turn, starting with your feet

and moving up through your body to the top of your head. You could also try a yoga or relaxation class to help relieve stress or go for regular walks at lunchtime.

Tackling stress

It may sound simple, but have you actually looked at exactly what is causing you stress and how you may be able to change the situation? If a person at work is causing you problems, can you discuss it with them or someone else? If you have too much work, can you find some help or ask a colleague to share the load? If you’ve said ‘yes’ to too many things, are there some you can say ‘no’ to? However much pressure you are under, try to take regular breaks to remove yourself from the cycle. Try to be wellorganised - many situations look better when you know exactly what it is you have to deal with, rather than worrying about it. Find as much help as you can - whether it’s in the home or at work, so that you are sharing the load - and talk to friends, family or colleagues so you don’t feel that you are coping alone.

World Champion students

‘Kip’ world champions! Kip McGrath Education Centre Caerphilly are delighted that some of our students are now world champions! Kip McGrath’s specialist tutoring software has become an ‘online’ presence. Kip McGrath Caerphilly was one of the first centres in the world to embrace the new ‘Insight ‘ programme. Amongst other improvements, this allows students to compare their scores to their own personal best, the best in the centre, the best in Wales, the UK, and the world. Emma Vaughan and Rebecca Roberts have proven to be worthy opponents against other pupils at centres all over the world by being ranked number one in ‘Kip’ educational games. Emma said: “In the game we have to do a series of times tables, up to times 12, in a certain amount of time. I find it a lot easier to learn my times tables this way and when you know your times tables, it makes working things out a lot easier.” Rebecca added: “It’s helped me a lot and has kept me a step ahead in what we’ve been doing in lessons.” Rebecca’s mother Sarah has also noticed the game’s impact on her daughter’s maths. She said: “Rebecca has come on in leaps and bounds since she started coming to Kip McGrath earlier this year. Her grades have improved but the one thing we’ve noticed is her confidence. “It’s a fun way of learning and they don’t realise they are learning.” Ages 6 to 18 Kip McGrath Caerphilly tutors children of all school ages. Specialist teachers from both primary and secondary sectors tutor students in English and Maths. To advertise contact Paul: E: paul@mylocalview.co.uk T: 029 2088 0378 M: 07737 610177

Caerphilly events update

Hello and Happy New Year! Welcome to the first events update of 2013! We are looking forward to another busy year of events and have already confirmed many events for the forthcoming year. Our events program will kick off with our St David’s Day celebrations in four town centres, namely, Caerphilly, Blackwood, Bargoed and Risca. We’ll feature more information in the next edition of My Local View.

Back once again this year is The Big Cheese, Bargoed Spring Fair, Blackwood Summer Festival and Caerphilly Flower Festival. As Caerphilly Food Festival was such a huge success in 2012 it will take place again this year with a new date of Saturday 4th May. Many food and drink stalls will line Cardiff Road along with food demonstrations throughout the weekend. Looking back on 2012 we had a very successful year of events. The weather has been surprisingly kind to us especially considering the amount of rain we had in 2012. We have been extremely lucky! The sun shone down on us for BBC Proms in Park in September providing the perfect setting for a truly magical night of entertainment. Along with the Tour of Britain cycle race, Caerphilly has been placed firmly on the map with a vast amount of TV and radio coverage.

Christmas 2012 saw us organise three Christmas Markets in Caerphilly, Blackwood and Bargoed. Caerphilly’s Medieval Christmas Market once again attracted thousands of visitors with many coach companies bringing in visitors overnight and for the day from various locations in England. The weather once again was perfect, cold and crisp and very Christmassy! The air was filled with the smell of mulled wine and the atmosphere was delightful. If your New Year’s resoluiton is to get fit then why not take part in the ‘Caerphilly Challenge Series 2013’. Two walks will take place on Saturay 11th May featuring self led 15 and 23 mile walks along ‘The Ridgeway’ around the Caerphilly Basin and across the Rhymney Valley. There will also be shorter led walks in Bedwas Riverside Park between 1 – 4.5 miles. For more information contact Brian Begg in Caerphilly CBC’s Countryside Department on 07788 547350. Don’t forget to keep a look out for forthcoming events on our website: www.caerphilly.gov.uk. That’s all for now, we’ll bring you more news in the next edition of My Local View! Staff in Caerphilly Crossways Tesco store have been doing their bit to help those in need this Christmas. December 1st and 2nd staff gave their time to man Foodbanks to collect food donations for disadvantaged people in the UK. The store collected donations worth £620, the equivalent of 1195 meals. Working with FareShare and Trussell Trust, Tesco not only promised to top up donations received by 30%, but to also provide funding to both. Staff also did their bit for charity by Cycling to Lapland Friday 7th to Sunday 9th to raise money for their Charity of the Year, Cancer Research UK. Cancer Research UK is Tesco’s charity of the year 2012, and thanks to the generosity of staff and customers, Caerphilly Crossways Tesco raised £705. Louise, 31 from Pontypridd was one of the staff members who took part in the cycling. She said “this is a fantastic opportunity for staff and customers to get involved, have fun and help support a great charity!” Staff at the store would like to thank everyone who donated to the Foodbank & Cycle to Lapland. The generosity shown was overwhelming and gives hope to families throughout the UK.

Thought for the Month

Flip it! If you are lucky enough to read both my gardening column and the ‘Thought for the month’ in this edition of local view you will notice that there is a similar theme - sorting out your rubbish and letting it work for you…!

Actually, they can be ‘flipped’ to make them work for good in our lives, just like those weeds in our gardens. Part of the process is recognising that we are not the only one with these challenges, and if we open up to a trusted friend (and God) about our struggle, we find that we can often offer help and comfort to someone else in their struggles.

Digging – that is the theme for the garden at the moment; and the idea of winter digging in your garden, is the same as ploughing a field – you aim to flip the top layer of soil over by 180 degrees. As you do this, you should find that any plant debris and weeds that were spoiling things at the surface, become buried and die at the bottom of the hole; and the great news is that once they have died, they compost down and produce nutrients to help nourish the plants that you put later in the spring and summer.

The starting point is being honest with ourselves, and about ourselves – I think when we pass that very human and slightly vulnerable point, we make ourselves approachable to folks around us – two of the most comforting words you can hear are “me too”, from someone who struggles with the same stuff as you.

Life can be like gardening sometimes …. We look at our life and see some rubbish and ‘weeds’; maybe they have been there a long time, we have accepted them as destined to always be there, always dragging us down a bit. If only they weren’t always here, that bad habit, the negative feeling, the way I react sometimes to that person! Whatever it is I guess we all have things in our lives that we seem powerless to get rid of..? and the more we look at them the larger and more powerful they seem to be …

Anyone who reads the New Testament will notice that it is full of stories of very fallible people who by the grace of GOD (which for me is when GOD does something with us, despite of us) achieved great things in their generation, but with very humble hearts. Now the only problem with writing this sort of stuff, is that I have to try and put it into action too … because actions ‘speak louder’ they say. So, there’s a new years resolution for me, to ‘flip it’ How about you? Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net

Technology

Beat The Bills How tech can reduce your energy usage After yet another winter of record-breaking energy prices it’s clear that the cost of lighting, heating and powering our homes isn’t going to drop any time soon - so it’s a smart idea to invest in energy saving technology to reduce the amount of energy we use. You’ve probably already double-glazed the windows, filled the cavity walls and insulated the roof, but there are still plenty of ways that technology can reduce your energy bills further. Some of the best ideas are the simplest ones, such as the Enviroplug (£9.99). As the name suggests it’s an environmentally friendly plug that’s been designed to switch off phone and gadget charges when the device is fully charged or no longer connected. Enviroplug reckons it can save you 13.14KWh of energy per year, equivalent to 76 hours of TV watching, per plug. Another simple idea is an automatic radiator bleeder (£13.99), an easy-to-fit device that ejects air from your radiators to keep them running at maximum efficiency. You can do the same job yourself with a £1 radiator key, of course, but air can easily build up without you noticing it.

Changing your light bulbs can reduce your bills too, even if you already use energy-saving CFL (Compact Fluorescent) bulbs. LED bulbs are improving in leaps and bounds, and a typical LED bulb will use half the energy of the equivalent CFL. To our eyes they’re better looking, too. Another good energy saver is the Standby Buster plug socket and its many imitators. It’s a remote control system that switches off devices completely instead of leaving them in standby mode. Expect to pay around £17.99 for three plug adapters or about £8 for a single plug socket. If you’re a tea or coffee drinker the Energy Savings Trust reckons you should change your kettle: its recommended product, the Wahl ECO Kettle, achieves energy savings of up to 60%. You fill it like a normal kettle but use the ECO control knob to tell the kettle how much water you need; it then only boils that amount. If you have computers at home, you may well be wasting energy there too: computers left running while you make a cup of tea or attend to a family crisis can consume surprisingly large amounts of energy: if you can see the screen saver, you’re paying for unnecessary

energy use. One of the most interesting solutions is the multi-award-winning Ecobutton Halo (£12.99), which plugs into a spare USB port and puts your PC into its lowest-energy standby mode with a single button press. It comes with software that tells you how much you’ve saved that week and since you installed the Ecobutton. Ecobutton reckons you can save around £50 per year with the device, although sadly it isn’t compatible with Apple machines. In addition to your computer, it’s worth looking at its accessories too: wireless mice and keyboards, games console controllers and other peripherals often use lots of batteries, and swapping Duracells for rechargeable ones can save you money as well as reduce your environmental impact. Even the biggest chargers are very cheap - Duracell’s CEF22UK is around £12, while the batteries themselves are relatively inexpensive too, with AAAs at around £6 for four and D-sized batteries weighing in at £3 apiece. You don’t need to recharge your batteries too many times before they start paying for themselves.

Miss Caerphilly 2013

“My name is Sarah-Jayne Evans and I am 20 years old and currently studying a Social Science degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University. I live in Caerphilly and have done all my life. I have a great interest in helping individuals and I enjoy giving rather than receiving. Roughly about two months ago I entered a Beauty Pageant called “Miss Caerphilly.” Having been shortlisted to come for an interview I then become one of the lucky girls to have been chosen to be in the Grand Final on November 23rd 2012. Being one of the grand finalists I had to raise charity money for the Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre, which supports children who suffer from Cerebral Palsy. This was an amazing opportunity for me to make a difference and to show how I can be a good role model for young women in Caerphilly. Preparing for the grand final I did numerous charity events with my mother who has supported me the whole way alongside with the rest of my family who were there on the evening to cheer me on. Having raised a fabulous amount for charity on the night I had the title of “Miss Charity 2013” out of all the girls I had raised the most for the charity.

That feeling was truly amazing and I am proud to say I will be visiting the children in the Therapy Centre later this week. Having won this amazing award I was also crowned “MISS CAERPHILLY 2013.” I was absolutely thrilled. I could not believe that I had won the big title. I am looking forward to my year now, with many different appearances and fundraising events, and looking forward to being an excellent role model for my town. Having won this regional title I now qualify to become a Miss Wales 2013 finalist. This final takes place in April 2013 and I aim to triple my charity from the Miss Caerphilly and really raise awareness for this amazing course. I am also looking for a sponsor, someone to sponsor me to do the Miss Wales 2013. This would be an excellent opportunity for a business to broaden their market, with me being the face of Caerphilly. If you would like to sponsor me please get in touch via email: sarahjayneevans1@gmail.com.
