Regular features Hello My eldest son suggested a “back to school” cover for this month’s magazine. I needed his help to make a decision as I had been sat in front of my computer for nearly 14 hours on the day I went to print! I do not normally leave things to the last minute but like so many self-employed people I had dared to take a holiday in August which means that two weeks work on the mag had to be crammed into one!

MY

I should take a holiday more often as I have had a record number of enquiries ranging from advertisers, community articles and a couple of really good ideas from local readers. One suggestion has come in from Mr. Prosser who, following a conversation with a Caerphilly Police Constable, has been in touch and recommended that I list telephone numbers for public services that can be hard to obtain such as reporting noise pollution or fly tipping in the Borough. One of the aspects or running this magazine that I enjoy the most is the engagement with readers so if you have access to some handy (and not easy to find) public service numbers please let me know and I will get the ball rolling! We have been featuring ads for Bedwas Rocks festival recently and the organisers have told me that the event was a great success, with a positive turn-out from local View readers. They have asked me to pass on their thanks to all who supported them. It was a fund raiser in aid of Velindre Cancer Care so a great cause!

CAERPHILLY & DISTRICT FLORAL SOCIETY

It almost seems a pity to break into our warm summer weather to think about the autumn and how to occupy our time when the nights close in. However, it does us good to stretch ourselves and learn a new skill or even refresh an old one. There are many pastimes around - but have you thought about learning how to arrange flowers instead of just putting them in a vase? Anyone can learn - Mums, Dads, Grans, Teenagers etc. Caerphilly Floral Society runs 2 classes per month. One held on a Wednesday afternoon 2-4 pm and the other on a Tuesday evening 7-9 pm where members are taught to arrange flowers through hands - on experience, by our teacher Mrs Eileen Williams. Arrangements are modern as well as traditional and everyone is very friendly. Eight afternoon and eight evening classes are held during the year and enrolment fees are kept as low as possible. During the Flower Festival you may have seen the Club’s work on display in the Visitors Centre coffee shop where the theme ‘Children’s Stories’ wereportrayed by some of the members with Cinderella, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, ARE YOU WORRIED THAT YOUR CHILD IS FALLING BEHIND? WE HAVE QUALIFIED TUTORS, READY TO VISIT YOU AT HOME!

Full Marks Tuition is a tuition service based in Caerphilly, South Wales; with over 15 years experience. We provide private tuition in Caerphilly, Cardiff, Newport and other areas, to all ages, in a variety of subjects. Junior - Secondary G.C.S.E - AS/A2-Languages

We develop education in line with schools and colleges and give that extra boost that is sometimes needed.

Tales of Beatrice Potter and the Mad Hatter’s tea Party from Alice in Wonderland arrangements. I know the hard work was appreciated by all who saw them. This year, members went on trips to the Malvern Flower Show and to the Flower Festival at the Bishop’s Palace in Wells where everyone enjoyed themselves. We also had our Christmas meal in the Caerphilly Golf Club albeit delayed to February due to the atrocious winter weather. Have I convinced you to join us? Meetings will re-commence at the Twyn Community Centre in Caerphilly town on Tuesday 3rd September 7-9pm and Wednesday 4th September 2-4 pm 2013. Why not pop in? Everyone is most welcome. If you require further information not covered here, please contact our Chairlady, Angela on 02920 866018.

Twinning Visit a big success!

A party of 32 Caerphilly & Llanbradach residents have just returned from the biennial twinning visit to the twin towns of Lannion and Ploubezre in Brittany. Staying with local families the group, aged from teenagers to over ninety, enjoyed a packed four day programme of activities. This included visits to a local market, an organic farm and the picturesque chapel at Kerfons. There was also a day trip to the Breton capital of Rennes, with a guided tour of the city, followed by a visit to the old Breton Parliament, now imposing Appeal courts. As well as time spending time with their hosts, the group joined a traditional meal of ‘galettes’ ( pancakes) and local cider followed by Breton dancing, and a second social evening with a buffet and dancing to a live band.

Many of the group have been visiting Lannion and Ploubezre for a number of years and so have forged strong friendships with the Bretons, experiencing different cultures and backgrounds‘. Next year residents from Lannion and Ploubezre will once again be visiting Caerphilly and Llanbradach. If you’d like to know more about the Twinning Association and its activities visit: http:// caerphillytwinning.org.uk/

There was also the annual boules challenge - and this year, regrettably, the trophies for both the teenagers and the adults have had to stay in France! John Reardon, Chair of the Twinning Association said: ‘ Once again our hosts ensured that we had a varied programme of activities that suited all ages.

Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly

Public Service

I think many will agree with me that some of my colleagues in Parliament have forgotten what public service is all about. I consider it to be a huge honour to have been elected Member of Parliament for Caerphilly and then to have been re-elected on two occasions. I see being a Member of Parliament as a full-time job. I am proud to say that my attendance rate and voting record in the House of Commons is one of the best and I spend a great deal of time, when I am not in Westminster, doing constituency work trying to help local people and supporting various community events. I am pleased to do so. This is the job that I was elected to do. I make no complaints about the workload because nobody forced me to become a Member of Parliament. This however is not the view of some MPs. There are many who hold extremely lucrative second jobs and argue, at least in private, that they are entitled to a massive increase in their salary.

CB ELECTRICAL SERVICES CAERPHILLY

This is not my view. I would like to see all candidates for Parliament commit themselves to being full-time Parliamentarians, working 100% for their constituents and not filling their pockets from outside jobs. It is also wrong that an outside body has recommended a massive pay increase for MPs. Recently, there have been examples where MPs and Peers have been shown to be only too ready to charge huge fees for promoting lobbyists interests in Parliament. This is an absolute disgrace. I have never accepted a single penny from a lobbyist and nor would I. The vast majority of MPs share my view but it’s the greedy few who give us all a bad name. Public service is something which is seldom talked about these days. It ought to be. Being a public representative is a privilege and those who are elected should never forget this.

Jeff Cuthbert - AM for Caerphilly

The National Assembly for Wales is now in its summer recess, although AMs like myself continue to work from our constituency offices. Toward the end of the last Assembly term, of course, we saw the surprise resignation of my colleague Leighton Andrews, who was the Welsh Government’s Minister for Education and Skills. I know Leighton well and worked closely with him over the last two years in my former role as Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology. I was saddened to hear of his departure from Cabinet; Leighton is a tremendous political talent and I have little doubt that he will be back to serve in government at some point in the future. However, Leighton has decided to concentrate on his constituency work in the Rhondda and we must respect his decision in that regard. Naturally, Leighton’s departure has meant that a Cabinet reshuffle was made necessary. In that respect, I am delighted to have been appointed as Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty. Vaughan Gething, Labour AM for Cardiff South and Penarth, will be working with me as Deputy Minister for Tackling Poverty. I take over my new role from my colleague Huw Lewis, who moves to take over Leighton Andrews’ old brief at Education and Skills. Ken Skates, Labour AM for Clwyd South, takes over my old job and will work with Huw Lewis as his Deputy. We are all looking forward to familiarising ourselves with

our new briefs and working together to meet the significant challenges that lie ahead. My new Ministerial brief is a broad, wide-ranging, but nonetheless extremely important one. I will have responsibility for areas such as the Welsh Labour Government’s response to the Tory-led UK Government’s programme of welfare reforms; relations with the voluntary sector; the flagship Communities First programme; financial inclusion policy – which includes support for credit unions; policy on children, childcare and parenting programmes (including relations with the Children’s Commissioner for Wales); and our flagship Flying Start programme. I will also be working closely with Huw to ensure that poverty is not a barrier to educational attainment in Wales. Given the Tory-led UK Government’s austerity agenda, we face significant challenges ahead in tackling the scourge of child poverty. However, we will work hard and do everything within our power to make sure that we stand up for Wales and implement the Welsh Labour Programme for Government on which we were elected. I very much enjoyed my previous portfolio but am now looking forward to my new one and the new challenges that it brings.

Junior All-Girls section and Kristie and Megan in the All-Ladies section. Kristie and Megan have since gone on to become Welsh All-Ladies Latin Champions for 2013, probably making them the best All-Ladies couple of all time by winning the titles of all the major competitions they’ve entered at some point during their competitive dancing careers. In addition to these outstanding results Bethan James (11) and Anya Harvey (10) also reached the final of the Juvenile All-Girl category at the same event.

A

s a new term fast approaches, T’nT School of Dance have been reminiscing about the huge success the dance school has achieved over the past 8 months. The year began on a high when T’nT Latin Explosion a formation team consisting of 10 girls between the ages of 13-15 years successfully auditioned for Sky 1’s Got to Dance. They were the only Latin American Team to be rewarded with three gold stars from the judges Ashley Banjo, Kimberly Wyatt and Aston Merrygold. The girls had an absolutely fantastic time at the Got to Dance domes, they got to meet presenter Davina McCall and later on in the year Sky 1’s Got to Dance even came to Pentyrch to record footage of the girls in training. Meanwhile all six of the formation teams at T’nT School of Dance were working hard in preparation for the annual British Formation Championships held in Blackpool. The children at the school were rewarded for all their hard work when five of our six teams reached the British Formation Championships Grand Finals in April. Only our development team who were dancing at this prestigious event for the very first time did not make the final on this occasion. We are currently Silver medalists in the Junior 4 Couple Team category and Bronze medalists in the Juvenile 8 Couple Team Category. Just a few weeks after attending the British Championships it was time for the teams to compete again this time in the annual Formation Teachers Alliance Competition where both the Junior 4 Couple Latin Explosion and Juvenile 8 Couple Heroes and Villains Team beat off stiff competition to become Champions in their respective categories. At the same competition our juvenile 4 Couple Team narrowly missed out on first place and our Lion King Development team also came 2nd in the Rising Stars Competition thus making us one of the most successful schools at the event. June was another busy month for the school, when two couples Ashleigh Edwards (15) and partner Corinne Johnson (14) and Kristie Simmons (17) and Megan Wright (17, from Machen) travelled to Essex to defend their titles in the Stars of the Future Competition. Both partnerships danced amazingly and managed to defend their titles for the second year running. Ashleigh and Corinne in the

What’s Next? As a result of the success of T’nT Latin Explosion on Sky 1’s Got to Dance, becoming Gold FTA Medalists and Silver British Medalists the team have been asked to perform at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in November. An experience we are sure that will never be forgotten. In addition to this, trainers Tiffany Lee and Tamsen Morgan and their pupils are looking forward to the opening of their very own dance studio in Caerphilly later this term. Meanwhile please check out the information below for new and existing dance classes in your area. Trainers Tiffany and Tamsen would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all their pupils on their success and thank them and their parents for their continued commitment, hard work and dedication.

Little Red Riding Hood I help a few folks with their gardens – and I just love it when they get excited about their garden, after all, we all deserve a magic moment in our garden. One plant that will often precipitate some spring excitement is a tulip called ‘Red Riding Hood’ – she is beauty, and now is the time to buy and plant them. The great thing about ‘little miss riding hood’ is that long before the flowers burst open, you have the added benefit of attractive striped leaves which start to catch your eye in March, ahead of the flower buds which appear in April – one of the criticisms of flower bulbs in your gardens is that once they finish flowering you have little to look at – not so with Red Riding Hood. Another key benefit of these easy to grow bulbs is that the fact that the bright flowers are carried on short sturdy stems – which means that • They are less likely to be damaged by strong spring winds • They are perfect for tubs, hanging baskets and small gardens • The flowers contrast nicely with the attractive foliage – the leaves have a slightly silvery look to them, and with the dark stripe they contrast beautifully with the vivid red flowers carried just above the leaves.

Partly because they are so easy to grow, and partly because of their name ‘Red Riding Hood’ these Tulips are great for Kids to ‘have a grow at’ – all you need is a couple of cheap pots and some decent compost, and you might just inspire some of the Alan Titchmarshes of the future ...? The bulbs are really hardy – so can be left outside all through the winter, they will appear like clockwork next spring, giving you and / or your children a real sense of achievement .. go on give a grow! Ed’s music round-up!

This month’s focus is on a local band from Caerphilly “Among others” who are all under the age of 20 and doing pretty well for themselves on the local circuit. They mix their own stuff with a few covers thrown in, but have at least 20 original songs in the pipeline that they would like to record in the near future. You can see one of their YouTube video’s “There’s no hope”, the link is at the top of their Facebook page. They have performed at local venues and festivals such as “Bedwas Rocks” and “Mega Day”. The band members include Justin Crow (Guitar/Vocals), Atwood (Keyboards/ Vocals), Sam Wright (Lead vocals), Ross Knight (Guitar), Adam Knight (Bass), Stephen Symonds (Drums). Their musical influences are varied and include “Classic Rock” as well lots of newer bands such as “Pendulum and” “Steel Panther”.

I would also like to give a mention to another Workmen’s hall gig coming up on the 7th September for a “Black Sabbath” tribute band called “Snowblind” who play at the venue , with welsh support band “No Glory” in attendance. Tickets for both events are available from the shop, and I would like to ask local music lovers to come out and show their support for both events.

Their next Major appearance is at the “Teenage Kicks” rock night at Caerphilly Workmen’s hall on September the 6th, with tickets priced at a reasonable £3.00. The event is aimed at the under 20’s age group and they are hoping to attract a lot of support from the local young music enthusiasts.

Caerphilly Events Update

We eagerly anticipate another exciting month in September as we welcome back two high profile events to the County Borough, which will showcase Caerphilly to a national audience. Saturday 7th September will see the Worlds largest classical music festival come to a spectacular conclusion with celebrations spilling out from the Royal Albert Hall to BBC Proms in the Park events at the Owain Glyndwr Playing Fields Caerphilly, Belfast, Glasgow and London.

Classical music lovers and families keen to enjoy the Proms in the Park’s unique atmosphere will be captivated by the tantalising performances of an all-star cast for ‘A Night at the Musicals’. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales will be joined by a host of famous faces as presenters Connie Fisher and Tim Rhys-Evans lead us through the magical evening and introduce the musical interludes of Sophie Evans, John Owen Jones and the mesmerising talents of trumpet soloist Alison Balsom. Audiences will also be given the opportunity to singa-long to a variety of popular songs including ‘You’ll never walk alone’. Caerphilly will be showcasing its local talent on the community stage at the event from 6pm with Caerphilly Children’s Choir, Violinist James Jones and Aber Valley Male Voice Choir; all providing a warm welsh welcome to Proms goers in preparation for the main event, which starts at 7.45pm. Bringing the magical evening to a memorable close will be a spectacular fireworks display over Caerphilly Castle, the backdrop to this show-stopping event. More information on the event including a full repertoire of performers can be found on the website: caerphilly.gov.uk/proms or call 02920 880011. Advance tickets can be purchased up until 6pm on Friday 6th September; adults £10 and accompanying children under 12 free. Tickets can be purchased in person from the Visit Caerphilly Centre, through Blackwood Miners’ Institute Box Office on 01495 227206 & website www. blackwoodminersinstitute.co.uk (£1 booking fee) or alternatively by calling the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Audience Line on 03700 101051 (standard geographic charges apply from mobiles and landlines). Alternatively tickets can be purchased on the day from the Visit Caerphilly Centre and at the event site at £12 per adult, with accompanying children under 12 free. The excitement is building as we look forward to

welcoming back the Tour of Britain on Thursday 19th September for the final of Stage 5 of the race. Riders will be battling out through a gruelling 177 km course from Machnylleth to Caerphilly. Competitors will be descending through the County Borough at high speeds before embarking on two demanding ascents of Caerphilly Mountain, which will culminate in a final crusade to the finish line, located on Crescent Road. The buzz and excitement of last year’s event provided an electric atmosphere with residents, spectators and local school children alike lining the streets cheering on the riders with many a welsh flag in tow. We are hoping that this year will be just as thrilling, so come along and show your support for the riders, keep a look out on Caerphilly.gov.uk for information on times that riders are expected to pass through. Our What’s on Autumn/Winter guide is well under construction and is bursting with an array of events to fill your diaries including spectacular fireworks displays, spooky ghost tours, dazzling lantern parades and of course our festive Christmas markets where you can pick up that perfect gift and indulge in scrumptious produce and delicious smells. We’ll bring you more in the next issue of ‘My Local View’. Hope that you all have a good few weeks and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

Thought for the Month

Don’t worry about a thing! Although my name, Roger, apparently means Warrior I am a bit of a worrier. hearts, love is on the way!

ZAC ZAC

I am not sure why really; maybe I sometimes try and cram too much into my life and then end up worrying that I will let people down – this was certainly the case a couple of months ago where the late nights and early mornings were only just enabling me to get everything done.

I should have been excited and grateful that I had so many projects on the go – I am one lucky little chap – but the stress was taking the joy out of the jobs. Something needed to change. So, I prayed.

Wow! I thought, that sounds spot on …almost too good to be true.

A few days later I went up to Victory church in Cwmbran with some friends, and midway between two hymns the worship band suddenly started playing Bob Marley …”Don’t worry about a thing – ‘Cos every little things gonna be alright”...

Best GCSE results for 3rd year running

Cardinal Newman comprehensive school in Rhydyfelin (near Pontypridd) is proud to announce that its pupils have achieved the school’s best GCSE results for the third year running. “We’re immensely proud of these results,” states headteacher Justin O’Sullivan, “and it’s a testament to the dedication of our teaching staff that we’ve been able to maintain this upward trend in GCSE results in spite of a national downturn.” With 81% of pupils attaining at least five GCSEs graded A* to C, Cardinal Newman’s results are the best in the local authority - in keeping with their leading attendance rates which also set the school apart.

The school has a unique partnership with St David’s Catholic Sixth Form College and Coleg Morgannwg which act as its 6th form (utilising teachers from Cardinal Newman) ensuring full 11-18 consistency of education. For more information, call the school on 01443 494110, visit cardinalnewman.co.uk or come along to the October 9th Open Day!

And things are only getting better, as Justin describes: “this coming year will see the arrival of our new IT learning library where books sit alongside iPads, our special courses for able and talented pupils (including Latin and Ancient History) and a dedicated team working to further improve our already excellent literacy and numeracy rates.”

Literary Marmite?

Mention Stephen King and people either enthuse (usually about ‘The Stand’ or ‘It’ or one of his famous horrors) or shudder dramatically, ‘Oh no, I couldn’t read anything by him – they’re all too gory’. ‘Have you seen The Green Mile?’ I ask, ‘Oh yes’ they smile happily, ‘that’s lovely’. ‘He wrote that’. ‘Oh’. ‘Shawshank Redemption?’, ‘Yes?’, ‘He wrote that too’. ‘Oh’. Of course, horror is something he does fantastically well – his first novel was ‘Carrie’, its success allowing him to give up teaching. This was followed by ‘Salem’s Lot’, ‘The Shining’, ‘The Stand’ and ‘The Dead Zone’, so it is clear that horror is a strong influence. However, to pigeon hole him in this category is to deny stories such as ‘The Green Mile’ and ‘Shawshank’, and others such as ‘Dolores Claiborne’, ‘Hearts In Atlantis’ etc.. Also, a number of his books are more Sci-Fi or Paranormal – The ‘Tommy Knockers’,’ Insomnia’ etc.. and the ‘Dark Tower’ series has an unexpected Western influence. For those who long to write, King’s non-fiction book ‘On Writing’ is an excellent introduction to the craft: clear, practical, this is a very useful book for those writing in any genre. It also contains his memoirs which are fascinating and both funny and moving in turn. King has often worked in collaboration with others and co-wrote the musical ‘Ghost Brothers of Darkland County’ with rock musician John ‘Cougar’ Mellencamp. Indeed, King is a big lover of music, frequently quoting from songs in his stories. He plays guitar in band ‘Rock Bottom Remainders’, which includes Matt Groening, Mitch Alborn, Greg Iles and Ridley Pearson. He is a huge fan of AC/DC (who played the sound track for his film ‘Maximum Overdrive’) and ‘The Ramones’, who wrote the title song for ‘Pet Sematary’, and appeared in its music video. King is no stranger to the screen and has acted in a number of his productions, including ‘Thinner’, ‘The Stand’, ‘The Langoliers’ and ‘Kingdom Hospital’. Like many artists, King has had his share of troubles and had a severe drug and alcohol addiction for a number of years, claiming he was drunk while giving his own

mother’s Eulogy, and that he can barely remember writing ‘Cujo’. However, his friends and family staged an intervention shortly after the publication of that novel and he has been sober ever since. In 1999 he was hit by a truck whilst walking along the side of the road, and was severely injured. On his return from hospital he found his wife, Tabitha, had reorganized his books and belongings, prompting him to realise what it would be like if he had actually died, and inspiring the novel ‘Lisey’s story’. He then went on to write ‘Duma Key’, about an author who is recovering from a near fatal accident and struggling to get back into writing: whilst the paranormal aspects of this book are presumably fiction, one can’t help but suspect a great deal of personal experience went into shaping the book’s hero. King has a masterly turn of phrase so to whet the appetite of those who have yet to discover the great man’s work (check out the TV series ‘Under the Dome’), here are some of my favourite King quotes: On himself: ‘People think that I must be a very strange person. This is not correct. I have the heart of a small boy. It is in a glass jar on my desk.’ ‘I watched Titanic when I got back home from the hospital, and cried. I knew that my IQ had been damaged.’ It’s his birthday on September 21st so Happy Birthday Mr King, from all those who love your work and those who have yet to discover your weird and wonderful worlds. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Phil Powell feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Caerphilly & the surrounding area and Phil is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
