4 Dear Reader Last month, for a bit of fun, I launched a little competition based around finding 5 “Ollie the Owl” mascot figures dotted throughout the magazine. One of our younger reader, who unfortunately, didn’t win, took the time to write me a lovely letter confirming that she had enjoyed entering and that “it was nice to see things in the magazine for younger readers”.

MY

It was great to receive her note and has encouraged me to start looking at providing a page specifically aimed at younger readers. I am formulating some ideas of my own but I would like to gain some feedback about the sort of things that younger readers would enjoy seeing in the mag. It could be a review of cool places to go, a music column, club membership, pretty much anything really. So if you are lucky enough to be called a youngster, please email me with your ideas. It will be nice to expand the reading material in the magazine! On Facebook - I ran a competition in which I gave away 9 copies of a great childrens book called Danny down the Drainpipe, by local author Lynda Nash. There were lots of entries and I am planning on using Facebook for further competitions and encourage readers to offer feedback to help make this little publication stronger and more useful to the community. Yes, I know it could also encourage some heckling but hey, I can take it!

Top 7 things not to forget when camping

I can’t remember many family holidays where we didn’t camp. And all my favourite childhood memories revolve around camping too. It is a wonderful way to, inexpensively, get away from it all and be with family and friends. Whether you are ‘glamping’ or pitched up under nylon, there are few things children and adults enjoy more than a wide open field in which to scurry around and play. But you do need to be prepared with the essentials and my capacity for forgetting them is high, despite being a seasoned camper. Here are my top 7 things not to go camping without. 1. Mallet. That 4.99 pair of flip flops is not going to get those tent pegs into even the softest of ground. 2. Blankets. Have you got a little bit of space left in the foot well of your car? Then shove in an extra blanket. You can’t be too cosy and it’s always lovely to have lots to tuck on laps as you sit out admiring the stars.

pitch your tent. You don’t want to be cooking too. I favour a big bean chilli that can be rolled up in a wrap and munched without a plate, for a zero washing up bonus. 4. Washing up liquid. I always forget this one. And so does everyone else. 5. Pump for the air bed. Whether it is electric or foot, forget this at your peril! Sleeping on the hard ground does not make for a bright happy morning. 6. Sunscreen and wellies. In Britain you need to be prepared for all eventualities! Plus dewy morning trips to the loo are much more pleasant in your boots. 7. Torches. It may have been a balmy early evening as you strolled to the village pub but now it’s the inky black of the countryside and which one is your tent?!

Recipe

Sage and Pancetta Roast Chicken Serves 4

Ready in 2 hours 30 minutes Give classic roast chicken a tasty makeover with a handful of fresh sage and some delicious smoky flavoured Italian bacon called pancetta. Look out for thin rashers of pancetta in the deli section of your supermarket or buy freshly sliced from an Italian deli. Serve with roasted baby new potatoes and lightly steamed vegetables for a wonderful summer Sunday lunch.

Ingredients: • 1.3kg oven-ready chicken (preferably free range) • 55g butter, softened • Few fresh sage leaves • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 85g smoked pancetta slices • 115g fresh white breadcrumbs • 1 medium egg, beaten • Fresh sage leaves, to garnish

Tip: To make light gravy to serve with the roast chicken, drain off any excess fat from the roasting tin then heat the pan juices until sizzling. Add a splash of dry white wine or sherry then stir in a little plain flour and 1 tsp wholegrain mustard. Cook for 1 minute then gradually pour in 400ml hot chicken or vegetable stock and slowly bring to the boil, stirring all the time. Simmer for 3-4 minutes until just thickened. Season to taste with freshly ground black pepper.

Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, Gas Mark 5. Place the chicken in a foil-lined roasting tin. Smear half the softened butter over the chicken breast, legs and wings and scatter over the sage leaves. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover the chicken loosely with foil and roast in the preheated oven for 1 hour 10 minutes. Uncover and baste the chicken with any juices twice during cooking. Meanwhile, melt the rest of the butter in a frying pan, add the chopped onion and fry gently for 5 minutes. Chop half the pancetta and add to the pan, frying for a further 5 minutes until the onion is softened and golden. Remove from the heat. Finely chop the rest of the sage and add to the pan with the breadcrumbs and seasoning. Leave to cool then stir in the beaten egg. Press the stuffing mixture into a greased 18cm round shallow cake tin. Uncover the chicken and top with the rest of the pancetta slices. Return to the oven and roast, uncovered, for a further 25-35 minutes until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through – the juices should run clear with no sign of pinkness when the thickest part of the thigh is pierced. Cook the stuffing in the oven at the same time until set and pale golden. Remove the chicken from the oven, cover and leave to rest for 10-15 minutes. Cut the stuffing into wedges and serve on a platter with the roast chicken, garnished with the fresh sage leaves.

Health Feature

Feeling the itch By Julia Faulks With the British summer finally here it’s not just us embracing the warmer weather - as we peel our winter layers off and take our arms and legs out of hibernation, summer bugs will also make their untimely appearance. Over the past couple of years wet and warm summers have resulted in an explosion in mosquito and flea populations, which can only mean one thing – bites and more bites. You’d like to think you would take it as a compliment that insects think you’re tasty enough to feast on, but it’s not much fun when you’re left with burning, red, swollen and itchy marks - not to mention the pain from stinging nettles after balmy walks in the countryside and picnics in the park. On-the-spot treatments There are some simple ways you can help relieve any discomfort if you’ve been bitten or stung: wash the area with soap and water, use a cold compress or an ice pack (a bag of frozen peas will do the trick) and try not to scratch to prevent infection. You can also use a spray or cream that contains local anaesthetic, antihistamine or mild hydrocortisone to prevent itching and swelling,

or take an antihistamine tablet (check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or worried about drowsiness or allergies to medication). Alternative remedies • For stinging nettle rashes rub the affected area with dock leaves for some instant relief – they are normally found growing near nettles. • Homeopathy is often used to treat bites and stings. For example, Apis and Ledum can help reducing swelling and relieve aching pains. • Essential oils such as Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil (dabbed on neat) can be a useful addition to your first aid kit and provide on-the-spot relief as well as helping reduce the risk of infection. You can also add any of the following oils to a bite and sting lotion or cream: Burdock, Plaintain, Echinacea, Feverfew, Nettle, Yellow Doc and St John’s Wort. Some oils can be used as a preventative by putting them in a lotion or water spray and applying to the skin. For example, Lavender, Rosemary, Tea Tree or Citronella. Always seek medical advice if you have wheezing, difficulty breathing or swallowing,

excess swelling around the bite or sting, or flu-like symptoms that appear to become worse rather than better. If you’ve previously had a severe reaction you will normally be offered an adrenaline pen or be referred to an allergy clinic for further investigations. Preventing stings and bites How can you prevent yourself from being stung in the first place? 1. Use an insect repellent at times when you’re more likely to be stung and try and keep your skin covered. 2. Keep an eye on your drinks to make sure that wasps or bees haven’t sneaked inside for a cheeky sip– they particularly like sweet drinks. 3. Try not to panic when you see an insect that may sting – if you wave your arms around you are far more likely to be stung. Stand up slowly, walk away and it will usually buzz off. 4. Use mosquito nets if you’re camping outdoors or put thin netting or door beads over doors to prevent insects from coming inside.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Phil Powell feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Caerphilly & the surrounding area and Phil is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly

Senghenydd goes to Westminster On 10 June, I was delighted to welcome Ed Miliband to open the Senghenydd Disaster Exhibition in the House of Commons. Ed is a Doncaster MP and knows only too well the impact which coal mining can have on communities. At the opening he spoke about the heavy toll across Britain which the industry has taken over the years. Also speaking at the event were Jack Humphreys, Chair of the Aber Valley Heritage Group, and my colleague Jeff Cuthbert AM. Jack spoke eloquently about the excellent work which was being done to raise funds for the National Mining Memorial, which is to be opened in Senghenydd to mark the centenary of the 1913 Senghenydd explosion. Jeff Cuthbert rounded off the proceedings by referring to the time he himself worked for the National Coal Board. The event was of course cross-party and non-party. Among the dozens who attended were Lord Wigley, the former leader of Plaid Cymru, Stephen Crabb, the Wales Office Minister, Baroness Royall, Labour Leader in the House of Lords, and ex-miner Dennis Skinner MP, the one and only ‘Beast of Bolsover’. I have to say to get such a ‘varied’ group of politicians together was an achievement in itself! In my introduction to Ed Miliband I pointed out that 440 men and boys lost their lives in 1913 and that was preceded by an earlier explosion in 1901 when 81 lost their lives. It was important, I said, to remember these two tragedies, but also to realise that they need not have happened.

Both explosions probably could have been prevented if basic health and safety standards had been in force. There are clearly lessons to be learned today. During the course of the week of the exhibition many hundreds of visitors to the House of Commons saw the exhibition and everyone was impressed by it. The Aber Valley Heritage Group and the community of Senghenydd as a whole deserve our praise and full support in all their efforts to raise funds for an appropriate National Mining Memorial. Further information about the work of the Aber Valley Heritage Group can be found on their website http://your. caerphilly.gov.uk/abervalleyheritage/history-and-heritage/ aber-valley-heritage-group If people are able to support the National Mining Memorial then donations, large and small, can be sent to Jack Humphreys, Chair of the Aber Valley Heritage Group, The Community Centre, Gwern Avenue, Senghenydd, Caerphilly, CF83 4HA.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

Turning Japanese When I was about 10 years old, a series started n TV called simply - ‘King Fu’ It arrived about the same time as a little fella with a powerful kick called Bruce Lee arrived on the big screen with his series of Hollywood martial arts epics – and I was drawn into all the hype, as I gradually realised that I was indeed South London’s young answer to Mr Lee. Over the years an interest and appreciation of things oriental has remained with me, and this of course includes in the garden. So if ever I hear about a good Japanese garden – I try to call in when I am in the area.

corner, particularly if you have a shaded area somewhere in your garden. Japanese garden seem to work really well in a little shaded and secluded area, the plants (such as Japanese Azaleas and Japanese Maples) love a bit of shade, pots and ornaments often develop attractive layers of moss when they are in the shade which adds to their appeal. Have you noticed how these interior décor designers often develop rooms with themes; so that the various items, colours and textures in a room complement each other? You can do the same with your’garden rooms’ to create more impact, maybe Japanese theme could work in that shaded corner? Themes like a good idea to me!

A few years ago I was working in garden centres along the south coast and called into ‘Compton Acres’ garden not far from Bournemouth – Wow! I just timed it right for their Japanese gardens with Azaleas in full bloom. But the thing with Japanese gardens is that they are gorgeous at any time of the year, with the combination of gravels, rocks, ornaments, plants and water. Now you may not have the room for a full ‘Compton Acres’ style garden, but you may have room for a little Japanese

Autism Heroes Awards June 2013

Holly Salmon is 14 years old and has Autism. She has overcame her own personal struggles with the condition to help organise a glamorous awards ceremony designed to celebrate all that’s wonderful in the world of Autism. The Awards were amazingly well received by the public and she hopes they will become an annual event, creating even more awareness of the condition she suffers from. The Awards were launched at the National Assembly for Wales on 2nd April 2013 - World Autism Awareness Day, and were held on June 15th in Cardiff during the third annual Holly’s Ball charity event. The awards were presented by Betsan Powys, BBC Wales Political Editor. The Event organiser and founder of Holly’s Ball, Jo Salmon said “There are so many people in Wales that are going that extra mile to help children & young people with Autism. We thought that it would be nice to let people know about this good practice. We also feel that people with Autism achieve so much on a daily basis that maybe goes unnoticed” There were three awards categories in the 2013 Awards. Kerrie Pritchard from Ashgrove School, Penarth was winner of the The Extra Mile Award, an award for those working in Education with children on the Autistic Spectrum. Tim Clarke, a young man with Asperger’s Syndrome,

Caerphilly events update

By the time our article reaches you Blackwood Summer Festival, Caerphilly Flower Festival and our first ever Caerphilly 10k will all be a distant memory as we plough through to another busy month of events in July. The first of our July events kicks of with the Famous Forties Music in the Park, on Saturday 13th July in Tredegar Park, Risca. Come and join us for an afternoon in the park, with live music from the forties beating from the music stage with acts including the delightful Siren Sisters. Visitors can also enjoy traditional funfair rides, Street entertainers, craft workshops and stalls at the free event. Keep a look out for the music festival brochure, which our colleague Sarah has worked really hard on, showcasing a variety of events in the County Borough including Mega Day and Bedwas Rocks. Hot on the heels of the Risca event, is the Big Cheese ® Festival on the 26th – 28th July. The Owain Glyndwr Playing Fields will once again be brought to life with an extravaganza of entertainment on offer from living history encampments, fire eating, troubadours, street entertainers, traditional funfair, music & dance as well as a barrel of laughs on offer in the Comedy marquee. An aroma of delicious smells will entice you to browse the scrumptious food on offer with fresh cakes, patisseries, indulgent cheeses and rich liquors, just a tipple of what’s on offer in the food hall. Visitors will also have the opportunity to gaze around wonderful craft stalls, learn about the work of a number of charities and discover new things to do at the event, whilst being able to look around Britain’s second largest castle for FREE (Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th only). The Big Cheese ® is not to be missed and is a fantastic weekend for all the family, check out our website http://your.caerphilly.gov.uk/bigcheese for all the information on the 2013 event. After a short break from the busy events programme in August, we will be back with Bargoed Open Air Cinema and two very high profile events in September, where we look forward to welcoming back the prestigious BBC Proms in the Park and the Tour of Britain. On Friday 6th September, come and experience the Open Air Cinema. Bring the whole family along to the free event and snuggle up with a blanket. The film is soon to be confirmed so keep a look out in our next article for details.

September. Caerphilly will once again be part of the last night of the proms celebrations, where we join London’s Royal Albert Hall, Hyde Park, Northern Ireland and Glasgow for the spectacular culmination of the BBC Proms Season. Families and music lovers are invited to embrace this year’s theme of ‘Musicals’, so join in the revelry and bring along your picnics, deckchairs and flags to soak up the unique atmosphere of the wonderful music event. If you would like to receive information on the event including when tickets will be released please email events@caerphilly.gov.uk or call the Event Hotline on 02920 880011 and request to be added to the database. Speeding into mid September, we are then onto the Tour of Britain, which will see some of the World’s top cyclists descend on our town for the finishing part of stage 5 on Thursday 19th December. Riders will once again have to face the gruelling climb of Caerphilly Mountain twice. Don’t forget to pencil the event in your diaries and join us at the finishing line to once again wave a flag and cheer on the cyclists. Hope that you all have a fantastic month, we look forward to updating you with more exciting information on our events next month. Thought for the Month

‘ere Dad - I got it wrong again! I realise that I might be showing my age a little now – but do you remember ‘The Dick Emery Show’ on TV in the 1970’s?

ZAC ZAC

If you are prepared to quietly admit that you do remember it (just between us two, of course), you may well remember the regular appearance of two slightly scruffy characters – a father and his hapless son who had the knack of getting it wrong, every week.

but I have to tell you that in all honesty I am in no position to preach or teach .. but the way I see it, if we all waited until we were living perfect lives before we challenge and encourage each other … well there wouldn’t be much challenging or encouraging going on!

I can relate to that young chap – “I’ve got it wrong again Dad” is often a key part of my prayer life, as I share my thoughts with my heavenly Dad. The danger for anyone, like me, who gets to speak or write their thoughts in the public domain is that we can sound like we think we are right, that we have got life sussed, even that we are worth following … this is the dangerous ground on which politicians, are MOVING but has only pop stars and Popes We regularly walk – and !!! history shown us that they easily trip up this rocky path around theoncorner, our new of public life. premises are now at:-

Thankfully, we have a heavenly Father who is perfect, and is in the business of helping his kids learn from him – he is incredibly patient and forgiving, and he knows what life is like (he came and lived a very tough 33 years as one of us).

I have been really encouraged by all sorts of people who have told me that they enjoy reading my monthly ramblings here in Local UNIT View –33 thanks –

There is.

WELSH LAW FIRMS UNITE TO RAISE AWARENESS OF LEGAL AID CHANGES Over 30 independent South Wales law firms have joined together to raise awareness of the effects the Government’s proposed alterations to legal aid funding for criminal cases will have, if they go ahead.

Firms will be required to bid for criminal legal aid work and will only be awarded a contract if they charge the lowest possible price per case, which the collective believes may jeopardise the quality of legal advice received by defendants.

The collective of firms organised an awareness day on Friday 21st June to inform the public about the proposed changes, which will reduce the number of people who qualify for legal aid in this area of law and remove the right to representation by the solicitor of their choice.

The number of firms in each region will also be significantly reduced to just nine in south Wales and four in Gwent, and firms do not necessarily have to have an office in the region to be awarded the work.

On Friday 21st June, representatives from the law firms attended at Crown Courts and Magistrates Courts across south Wales handing out information and talking to people about the impact the changes will have for them. Under the proposals, legally aided criminal defendants will no longer be able to choose a lawyer who they know and trust but will simply be allocated someone at random.

This could mean defendants being represented by a lawyer who is based several hours away from them with no knowledge of the local community. Tony Williams, a partner at Merthyr Tydfil and Nelson-based law firm JNP Legal, said: “Public awareness of the impact these changes will have is very low and people seem to believe they will only apply to your stereotypical criminal, however this isn’t the case -anyone could find themselves the victim of false accusations and suddenly need legal support so these proposals are something we should all be fighting against.

Motoring Feature

Fixed Penalties What the changes mean for you.

Changes are being introduced to give the police powers to issue fixed penalty notices for careless driving from July 2013. Careless drivers who put other road users at risk face on-the-spot penalties under new measures announced by the Department for Transport.

Fixed Penalties.

The changes will give the police greater flexibility in dealing with less serious careless driving offences, such as tailgating or middle lane hogging, and free them from resourceintensive court processes. The fixed penalty will also enable the police to offer educational training as an alternative to endorsement. Drivers will still be able to appeal any decision in court. In addition, existing fixed penalty levels for most motoring offences - including using a mobile phone at the wheel and not wearing a seatbelt - will rise to £100 to bring them into line with the penalties for similar non-motoring fixed penalties. The fixed penalty for careless driving will be £100 with 3 points on the driver’s licence. The most serious examples will continue to go through court, where offenders may face higher penalties. There are no changes to penalty levels for parking offences. Fixed penalty levels for most of these motoring offences have not increased since 2000, and are now lower than other penalties of a similar severity. In addition, raising the penalty levels for these offences offers an additional incentive for drivers to take up remedial courses which address poor driving behaviour in the longer term. The changes - which the government aim to bring into force in July 2013 - are being introduced following extensive public consultation with road safety groups and police forces.

Fines.

Most motoring fixed penalty offences will rise under the changes: • a non-endorsable (where the driver does not receive points on their licence) £30 fixed penalty notice will rise to £50 • an endorsable (where points are given) £60 and non-endorsable fixed penalty notice will rise to £100 • an endorsable £120 fixed penalty notice will rise to £200 • the fixed penalty notice for driving with no insurance will rise from £200 to £300 Graduated fixed penalties (mainly for commercial goods and passenger carrying vehicles and including offences like drivers’ hours and overloading) and financial deposits (for drivers without a satisfactory UK address) will also increase: • a £30 non-endorsable fine will rise to £50 • a £60 endorsable and non-endorsable fine will rise to £100 • a £120 endorsable and non-endorsable fine will rise to £200 • a £200 endorsable and non-endorsable fine will rise to £300 As with other existing fixed penalty notice offences, such as speeding, police forces will also be able to offer careless drivers the option of remedial training. Though penalty levels will increase, penalty points will not change. Fixed penalty notices for parking, waiting and obstruction offences will also remain unchanged.
